Welcome to your November issue!

Aaaah, November! I just love November, don’t you? It’s cool and crisp, even in central Arizona.

It’s a time to pause and reflect on the year that has almost passed, just before the hustle and bustle of the holidays begins. It’s a time to thank our military veterans. It’s a time to be thankful… grateful…appreciative of all that we have.

could be your spouse or just a casual Facebook acquaintance, but you never know when a few words of acknowledgment could really mean a lot to someone.

While we are on the topic of gratitude, please know how much we, at The Front Porch magazine, truly appreciate the monthly contributions of you, the residents of Marley Park. This magazine would not be what it is… for neighbors, by neighbors…if it weren’t for the I’d like to invite you to pause for a moment this many, many residents who volunteer their time month and truly, genuinely, reflect on what you and talents to share stories, articles, poems, are grateful for you in your life. Maybe even grab art, interior design ideas, pets, photography, a pen and paper and jot a few things down. I and so much more with us every month. In this read somewhere recently that gratitude is like a age of social media, it can sometimes seem like superfood for our physical, emotional, and social negativity prevails…which is why publishing well-being. Soak it in…gobble it up! After you’ve an old-fashioned print magazine filled with done that, express it! Show it! Tell the people positive stories and articles about neighbors is in your life how much you appreciate them. It so rewarding. On Our Cover

Laura’s father was a United States Air Force pilot and her bother followed in his footsteps… so it only made sense that she married a USAF pilot who was the son of a USAF pilot. After all, military life is, well, a way of life! Laura met Tyler when she moved to Texas to be closer to her brother and sister-in-law. As newlyweds, they were stationed at Luke Air Force Base while Tyler trained to fly the F16. They only spent nine months here, but they fell in love with Arizona.

As with most military families, Laura and Tyler have moved a lot. The USAF took them to Italy for almost five years where their son, Callum, was born. While there, Tyler deployed to Afghanistan for eight months. From Italy, they were sent to South Korea for two years, where they had their daughter, Claire. Their next stop was Luke Air Force Base once again. Thrilled to be back in Arizona, the family settled in Rancho Gabriela, but just two years later, they were transferred to England. While they loved the three years they spent in the UK, they are thrilled to be back in the United States and ecstatic that they have made Marley Park their home.

After living so close to Marley Park the last time they were stationed at Luke, they knew that this time they wanted to truly be part of the neighborhood. They love Marley Park Elementary School, where both kids attend.

They love living on a cul-de-sac that’s walking distance from the school. They love their friendly Marley Park neighbors and the feeling that everyone here looks out for each other and their kids.

Tyler will be the Director of Operations of the F35 Training Squadron. They are on a three-year tour here but hope to stay in Arizona as long as the USAF will let them.

Because Veterans’ Day is in November, I wanted to feature a military family on this month’s cover. I invited Laura over, and we sat on the front porch while she described all the places they’ve been in the past 14 years. It really put into perspective how much military families truly sacrifice to serve our country. Thank You For Your Service “I was sitting at the shoreline of the Atlantic Ocean. I had never seen the ocean before. I watched as the waves ran out on the beach and I became very nervous, not knowing, having just turned 28 last week, what was to become of my life.

wounded. I had about 15 casualties. Enemy planes flew overhead. It was 3 days before I saw an American plane.

While back on board offshore, on the third day, my ship was torpedoed by an enemy submarine.

The fast sinking ship killed 100 and injured another 258. I managed to swim to safety, to a nearby US ship, through the thick, molasses like water, covered with the oil spilling over from the ship’s damaged hull.

I survived that battle, known as Operation Torch.

My first son was born the following January, 1943. We went on to have 10 children, 7 boys and 3 girls, 22 grandchildren and 2 greatgrandchildren, with, I’m sure, more to come.

Now, in just the second month of the new century, at age 85, I must say goodbye. Carry on.”

After enlisting in the Navy, and getting married earlier that year, I was now assigned to board this huge transport ship, serving as the ship’s medical doctor for over 80 officers and 1,074 young sailors. We were heading to a strange land, leaving behind my pregnant wife, in the unfamiliar town of Portsmouth, Virginia.

It was Sunday, October 25th. The ship left our port, heading to an enemy occupied area 3,800 miles away. We joined a convoy of 350 warships and 500 transport ships, all heading east, really a sight. Two weeks later, we were anchored 6 miles offshore near Morocco, Northwest Africa. Our Allied invasion began, using landing boats, and 19,000 men hit the beach at Fedala. When I hit the beach, I realized I was more scared than I thought, shells screaming around and seeing guys fall. But then I got mad, not feeling anything, except that I had a job to do. Kindness Matters “Throughout the course of American history, courageous men and women have taken up arms to secure, defend, and maintain these core principles upon which our Nation’s freedoms depend.” ~George Bush I was recently required to write an essay on the true meaning of freedom. This made me realize how lucky we are to be living in this country. Other people, other human beings are locked up, caged in warstricken countries. They are oppressed and unable to escape. Through researching this and learning about it all, I learned that in America we are truly free. I also thought about how we can be truly free. It is through the hard work of our military that we can enjoy life without having to worry if we are safe, or if we will be stripped of our freedoms. Our military protects us from the dangers of not having freedom.

Last month we focused on doing one small act of kindness a day. I really noticed a difference when I kept up on that. I found I had more patience and started to look forward to bringing a smile to someone’s day. I believe that this would be a great lead into this month’s challenge.

This month, I want us to give our thanks and gratitude to some of the most hard-working people in our country, in the world perhaps, soldiers and members of the military. They go through so much in order to keep us safe. They put us and our country before anything else. As someone once said, “It is the soldier, not the reporter, who gives us the freedom of the press. It is the soldier, not the poet, who has given us freedom of speech. It is the soldier, not the campus organizer, who has given us the freedom to demonstrate.” ~Unknown.

I want us all to write a letter of gratitude, even just a note, to someone who is currently serving, or who has served our magnificent country and done a great deed to give us peace of mind.

Giving thanks to those who help us makes more people want to be good.

Veterans’ Plaza In January 2015, after I returned from my final deployment after 21 years of service, my then fiancé and I decided to buy a home together.

After months of looking at homes, we fell in love with Marley Park and decided to build a home here. Since we were both close to retirement eligible status, we felt comfortable settling down without fearing of any unpredicted moves from the military, but, because I was still technically single, just a month after signing the contract for our home, I received orders to Montana.

As it turned out, I was in the process of undergoing tests for some medical issues and, much to our surprise, I found out I was 13 weeks pregnant. Luckily, my orders were cancelled due to the progression of my pregnancy. Suddenly, we were planning a wedding, the birth of our first born, and moving into our new home all at

once. In February of 2016, just days before our baby girl was welcomed into the world, we signed our closing documents and made our home here in Marley Park official.

Just as we were settling into our new home and into life as parents, the Air Force sent orders to PCS (permanent change of station) again; this time to Oklahoma. So, upon approaching 22 years of service to the USAF, I applied for retirement, and I retired in November of 2016.

My husband followed in January of 2017. On Father’s Day in 2017, I purchased 2 pavers in our Veterans’ Commemorative Plaza as a token to my husband that we have paved our next adventure through this community by building our family and our home. We are so happy we made the choice together for our future as a family.

Spiritual Thoughts A smile slowly climbed my face as I was going through old pictures on my computer. Each picture brought back a full glass of good memories to go with it. I eventually arrived at a picture of a group of nursing student friends.

We were all grinning radiantly at the camera with our arms around each other. My eyes were drawn to Maddie, one of my favorite buddies in my class. She had a dazzling smile that claimed the spotlight in the photo. I gazed at her and wondered what was so captivating about her.

Maddie was in her 40s when the picture was taken. None of her physical features demanded attention. Her hair was slightly shorter than shoulder length and the color and style were simple. She did not wear make up or dress in stylish clothing. Maddie was a jeans and t-shirt sort of gal. Her body shape was not like Jessica

Rabbit but slightly plump like any ordinary woman you see on the street in America. Despite her everydayness, she seemed to catch your attention immediately.

The thing I remember best about Maddie was she had the best hugs in the entire world. Her chest was quite large and she would wrap you into her squishy, soft grasp and you felt happy instantly. She always smelled good, like a warm home with fresh baked cookies in it. Maddie was genuinely kind and had a loving smile for everybody. She had no drama with anyone. Her laugh was contagious! You could tell when she started laughing that it came from deep down in her soul. She was always thoughtful and a great listener. You just wanted to be around her all the time because if you were in her presence you knew you were safe. No judgment, no disapproval. You could be your full self with her.

If I had one wish in this world, it is that people like Maddie would be the standard of beauty, not what we see in popular culture. Maddie’s inside self was so gorgeous that it radiated to her outside self. Take away that inner shine, Maddie would be described as plain and ordinary. Yet, with her inner sparkle shinning for all to see, the only word I could use to describe my friend at that moment is‌beautiful.

Giving Back

There’s something about giving back to the community that just makes you feel so good inside. That feeling is even better when shared with friends. Since 2013, Marley Park neighbors have been getting together a few times per year to volunteer at Valley View Community Food Bank. The work ranges from bagging pasta, to sorting canned and boxed food, to stocking refrigerators and freezers with fresh food donations. There is always something to do for, even the youngest helpers!

We go, we work, we chat, and sometimes we even sing a few songs together! Our groups usually number between fifteen and twenty people, including children of all ages. Our youngest helper has been a one-year-old just learning to walk! Of course, the young-at-heart are welcome and encouraged to attend as well.

With diverse groups of children, teenagers, and adults pitching in, we make short order of very tall boxes of donations!

Fall Recipe Mom’s Pumpkin Cookie Recipe 2 lbs canned pumpkin 3 tsp nutmeg 1 c butter 3 tsp baking soda 1 tsp salt 2 tsp pumpkin pie spice 3 c sugar 4 c flour 1 c chocolate chips (or raisins) 1 c nuts (optional) Mix all ingredients in a large bowl. Drop by spoonfuls onto greased cookie sheet. Bake at 375 for 15 minutes.

Decorator’s Corner

Fall Into the Season

I’ve always been enamored with historic European decor, particularly the Gothic Revival and English Cottage styles. Our living room is an eclectic blend of these styles, incorporating masculine leathers and woods, feminine florals, and 1700’s Spode accents. A classic tufted leather Chesterfield sofa and Swedish Wingback chair crafted out of rich mahogany and Bordeaux leather command the space.

The look is softened with a Dogwood Lace tablecloth and window valances adorned with charming blue silk bows.

All furniture was purchased from various online retailers except for the credenza under the window which can be found locally at American

Furniture Wearhouse. The faux floral was purchased as individual sprigs at Michael’s and I made the arrangements, which star cotton stems and plum roses.

To celebrate the Autumnal season, we’ve added a Spode pumpkin, pumpkin accent pillow, and a blue pumpkin throw, all from Kohl’s.

Thanksgiving Thanksgiving will soon be upon us! The Giannetto family will start the day around 6:00 a.m. by getting started on three fried turkeys... two for the neighborhood potluck and one for “leftovers” for us. I’ll be putting together my famous scalloped corn, kale salad (don’t knock it until you try it...people rave about it every year!), and a batch of homemade whipped cream, of course! Tablecloths, napkins, napkin rings, a dozen centerpieces, flowers, flatware, serving spoons, paper plates, butter, salt and pepper, drinks, cups, an ice bucket, stacks of to-go boxes, and a bunch of toys and games for the kids will be loaded into David’s truck.

The Marley Park Thanksgiving potluck has become our annual tradition. I miss going home to Michigan for Thanksgiving, but after six years of sharing Thanksgiving with neighbors, many of them have become like family. Our kids have a blast running around the Heritage Club lawn with the other kids after dinner...and after the frenzy of planning and organizing everything

(and a few grown-up drinks), I usually find myself happily chatting with neighbors and not really wanting the day to end. It will, of course...and everyone will pitch in to clean up the clubhouse.

Aside from 216 pieces of flatware, there will be no mounds of dishes to do or huge messes to clean up when I get home. I’ll wash the tablecloths and napkins, fold them neatly, and store them away for next year. We are lucky to live in a neighborhood where traditions like this enrich our lives and the lives of our children.

Pet of the Month Our November pet-of-the-month is a sweet chocolate lab names Grace, rescued from Florida

by Marley Park residents, Dustin and Lauren Graham. Grace’s original family purchased her from a breeder, but lost interest after the first year. The Grahams fell in love with her pictures, flew to Florida, and drove her home. They feel they lucked out because they still got a puppy but got to skip the first year of potty training and chewing everything in sight.

Thankfully for both Grace and the Grahams, she has been a wonderful addition to the family!
