Welcome to your October issue!
It’s here! Fall is officially here! Although we aren’t quite experiencing “fall” weather yet, fall is definitely in the air in Marley Park! Neighbors have started fall decorating and front porches throughout the neighborhood are being adorned with pumpkins, fall wreathes, and autumn décor. The mornings are a little cooler and I’m finding myself lingering a little longer on the front porch with my coffee after the kids head off to school. If this is your first fall in Marley Park, you’re going to love it! No one decorates their homes for Halloween quite like Marley Park residents! The neighborhood events are a blast, and Halloween night is an incredible scene of kids and families getting out and about in their costumes to enjoy
the festivities, and of course, collect treats from neighbors. Halloween truly embodies the spirit of “The Front Porch” in so many ways. If you’re planning to pass out treats this year, please consider adding a teal pumpkin to your front porch to indicate that you have non-food and allergy-friendly treats available. This simple act promotes inclusion for trick-or-treaters with food allergies or other conditions. You can visit FoodAllergy.org to add your address to the Teal Pumpkin Project Map! May you and yours enjoy everything Marley Park has to offer this fall season and remember..

On Our Cover
Halloween is one of the best times of the year in Marley Park for us humans. But what about for our pets? It can be anxiety inducing for them. Most pets are happiest when confined indoors on this busy night. Even well socialized dogs can find the hustle and bustle of little people dressed in costumes unsettling. To avoid any unexpected or aggressive reactions or attempts to escape, consider confining your pet to a secure room or crate. Do not leave dogs out in your yard. Even dogs that are not known to be reactive may act out of character. Keep all candy out of reach for those counter surfers. All forms of chocolate, but especially baking or dark chocolate, can be deadly to cats and dogs. Symptoms of chocolate poisoning may include vomiting, diarrhea, rapid breathing, increased heart rate, and seizures. Call a vet immediately if your pet gets into the stash of chocolate. Many types of candy, and especially gum, also contain xylitol, which can be deadly to dogs if ingested. Even small amounts of xylitol can cause a sudden drop in blood sugar, loss of
coordination, and seizures. If your dog ingests xylitol, seek veterinary care immediately this is an emergency! Make sure your pets are wearing some form of identification. So if they escape, they can make their way back home quickly and avoid the pound. Now is a good time to consider having your pet micro chipped if they havent been already. If you decide that your dog is up for joining the kids for some trick or treating, be sure to follow the leash laws and use a 6-foot (or shorter) leash. Putting on a reflective harness or collar can help with visibility and, of course, be a courteous neighbor and pick up all dog waste. Be sure that the collar or harness is sized properly so they can’t wiggle out of it and get loose. Wishing you and your furry family members a fun, safe, and happy Halloween! Kindness Matters
Last month we looked at doing one small act of kindness a day. I found many people fulfilling this challenge. I also noticed that people had more patience and more love towards each other. I really, truly believe that focusing on someone else and choosing kindness changes lives. I couldn’t count how many people I saw who had a smile on their face because of a small act of kindness someone else showed them. It is amazing to see the effects of these challenges in action. I believe that as we, as a community, continue these challenges, we will be able to see how much life has improved. Along with these acts of kindness, a lot of a positive outlook on life is your perspective. When you are looking for someone to be kind to, something to do for them, you see how much you have and notice people being kind to you.
I know that in my family we have a challenge where we try to find something every day that we saw someone else do for us: mom took me to practice, my sister helped me with homework, I read to my brother, someone let me go first in line for lunch, etc. Kindness changes so much for the better. In many neighborhoods in Surprise, people decorate rocks and hide them in parks and around schools and public buildings, for people to find. It has turned into a thing where people share a post of their rock, and a comment about what someone did for them, and what they did to someone else. I thought this was a great idea and I would love it if we could emulate that. I want us to all decorate a rock(s) and put it somewhere for people to find. If you find a rock that is not yours, post a picture and share a kindness experience. This could be phenomenal! Remember, “Probably the biggest insight... is that happiness is not just a place, but also a process…. Happiness is an ongoing process of fresh challenges, and… it takes the right attitudes and activities to continue to be happy.” - Ed Diener Remember to share your experiences in The Front Porch group on Facebook with #KindnessMatters. Have Some Humor Our internet went down on the 13th of September.
My journal entry from the day follows: We survived Friday the13th and a simultaneous full moon and are still getting by on our weak Verizon signal in the neighborhood. I'm not sure how long we can last before it starts to affect the mental health of the troops. The kids are staying occupied by reading oldfashioned books. I'm so glad I taught them this skill when they were younger. I had no idea how imperative it would be to survival now. However, without Alexa there is no music. I'm afraid the lack of music will start to get to them soon.
Even the dogs have become conditioned to the quiet buzz of the app when a human steps onto our front porch. I'm not sure how they'll adapt to relying solely on their canine senses to alert us of intruders. If another twenty-four hours passes with no improvement, we will likely have to relocate to the East Valley. I'm told circumstances are better there. They have options other than Cox, and the internet never goes down. I understand there are no coyotes roaming the streets or riff raff breaking into vehicles in the East Valley either. It sounds like a magical place. The journey to the East Valley will be long and difficult, but it may be our only option for longterm survival. If you are reading this journal entry, please pray for us. Update: It turned out to be a faulty $5.00 network cable. All is right in the world again. Submitted by Christie Giannetto | Marley Park Resident
We have plenty of provisions to get through the next few days, but if the cellular signal doesn't hold strong enough to put in an Instacart order, things could be looking bleak by Monday. I am unable to control our thermostat using the Nest app. Every time I try the "OFFLINE" setting a notification reminds me that the high is 104° today. Without the thermostat control we are left to rely on the previously learned behavior of the Nest devices. All our security cameras are down, including our doorbell, leaving us frightfully vulnerable to an attack.

Home Sweet Home When it comes to selling a home, there are more options available than ever before. For some, listing with a licensed REALTOR® is the best option. With this route, your agent will provide advice for staging and preparing the home for sale, hire a professional photographer and videographer, and market the home online. The agent will offer a cooperative commission split to other agents representing potential buyers.
Your home will be available for showings and will typically take anywhere from a few days to several weeks to receive an offer. If the purchaser is financing, there will be an appraisal and the loan underwriting process will typically take 4-6 weeks. This is a great option for those with homes that are “show-ready,” those who have no specific time frame in which they need to sell, and those who are not simultaneously purchasing another home. For others, the option of selling to a cash buyer may be the best course of action. Cash buyers will typically make an offer sight-unseen, eliminating the need for cleaning, de-cluttering,
Estrella Publishing - The Front Porch magazine
and staging. They can close in as little as 14 days or, if needed, extend close of escrow longer than a typical buyer. Cash buyers will often charge “service fees” to offset their carrying costs, however, these fees are often comparable to the total commission paid in a traditional sale. If you need help determining which route is best for the sale of your home, contact an experience REALTOR® and request a free, no-obligation consultation. An experienced agent will guide you on how to make sure you’re receiving the BEST possible cash offer for your home and provide a comparative market analysis so you can determine if cash offers are fair market value. Look for an agent who works with cash buyers so that if you do decide to accept a cash offer, your agent can represent you at no cost by collecting a referral fee from the buyer. You’ll have the best of both worlds by paying zero commission and still having an agent on your side representing only your best interests throughout the transaction. Spiritual Thoughts
“Mommy, hold my hand.” pleaded my anxious two year old, Amya.
We were playing family hide and seek. The lights were turned off and each child had a flashlight to add an element of fun and suspense to the game. Everyone was giggling as they searched and were spooked by the hiding family member. Only Amya was timid and anxious about the game. She refused to leave the designated “home base” unless either my husband or I held her hand. “It’s okay, Amya! Let’s go find Daddy!” I said with a tone of mischief and excitement. As I held her hand, her fear left her. She eagerly searched behind couches, in closets, and under beds for her dad.
The suspense of the game had not gone away, but now she concentrated on the excitement and humor as opposed to the unknown and the startling. There are many situations in life that can produce fear and trembling in us, and for good reason. A career change in which success is not promised brings distress. A diagnosis of a serious illness without a guarantee of recovery produces terror. Facing overwhelming debt with the uncertainty of your finances causes alarm. A struggling marriage that brings fear of the future for you and your family creates apprehension. These situations can either keep us paralyzed in life or we can have faith and continue to play the game. God fully wants you to continue to live life and live it with Him! When He is holding your hand, there is no reason to be afraid! Submitted by Josie Flancbaum | Marley Park Resident
I contemplated how interesting it was that a fear that paralyzed her earlier was completely abated by the reassuring presence of her mom and dad.

Investing In The Future “Upon the subject of education, not presuming to dictate any plan or system respecting it, I can only say that I view it as the most important subject which we as a people can be engaged in.” ~Abraham Lincoln
Education is vital to the well-being of individuals and the civic health of a community. While there are many paths to education, including public education through the local school district, charter, private or homeschool, investing in the education of our children pays far greater dividends than can be measured. Schools play a key role in the foundation of our community and help attract jobs and economic opportunities. As a parent of four wonderful children, I place a high priority on their education and am thankful for others who have invested in them from teachers and principals to the cafeteria workers and volunteers in the parentteacher association.

One local organization that invests in educating students is the Dysart Education Foundation (DEF). DEF is a non-profit organization with volunteers including active and retired Dysart Unified School District employees, community leaders and parents. A Haunting Tale Spirits roam from home to home while witches brew, selecting a few, to concoct a stew. Evening falls and the sounds of the night ignite dread and fright in the hearts of the children who roam the streets searching for sweets… If they succeed in collecting the sugary wares they’ll return to their homes, slide into their beds, with smiles on their faces, unaware of the ghosts who roam spreading their dread through the dark corners and spaces of their rooms and then the naughty ones will become the ingredients for the witches’ brew, a stew of disobedience. The sweet sugary state will wear off quite late and the children will find themselves screaming far into the evening while parents run to their sides, attempt to comfort and guide them to believe that their fears are unfounded and what appears to be grounded in reality is really just a fallacy… but when the children are tucked in again, and the lights turned off once more, the spirits and witches and ghosts will continue their dreadful deeds of yore… Submitted by Christie Giannetto with help from Cole (9) and Grace (7) Giannetto | Marley Park Residents | Photo by Carson Cavaletto | Marley Park Resident

Decorator’s Corner A common complaint about homes in Arizona is the lack of a door between the master bedroom and bathroom suite. An easy solution is a sliding door. Marley Park resident, TJ Heagy , recently built his own sliding door for his master bedroom/ bathroom doorway. In true Marley Park fashion, a neighbor reached out and asked for help building one for her home. TJ stepped up to help and his work is pictured here. TJ says “I’m by no means a contractor but I think it looks pretty good. I kind of just do this stuff in my free time but if anyone is interested in a door, I can either help build it, build it, or just walk you through how to do it yourself.” TJ is a member of The Front Porch group for Marley Park residents on Facebook (TheFrontPorchGroup.com) and can be reached via Facebook messenger. The artist, Marley Park resident Jeralyn Aston, specializes in painting pet portraits but is occasionally inspired to paint the truck and Scenes of the Sonoran Desert. The truck has been a part of Jeralyn’s family twice; it was sold, greatly missed, and purchased a second time.
