to your September edition!

Well, we’ve had a month to get back into the swing of the school year! Growing up in the Midwest, school always started after Labor Day for us as kids, and even after 16 years in the Valley, it’s always a bit of a shock when the first day of school rolls around during the first week of August! I’m guessing I’m not alone when I say it takes me about a month to get adjusted…but here we are in September already and the consistent rhythm of the school year has finally started to become normal again.

I’ve noticed that Arizona residents seem to embrace autumn a little earlier and with a little more passion than people from the Midwest. It’s almost as though we are willing cooler weather to come with our corn husk wreaths and centerpieces of dried leaves, even though the leaves on the trees outside are still green…or maybe just a little yellow from the heat. By contrast, my Midwest friends and relatives are trying to hold on to the last shreds of summer as long as possible, despite the crispness in the air.

On Our Cover My name is Brenda Lopez and the photo on the cover is of my perfect, beautiful little boy, Ethan.

Yes, my son is perfect; not perfectly behaved, just perfectly created. To be honest, I did not always feel this way. At the age of 32 and in my 20th week of gestation, I received news that marked the beginning of a life-changing journey. I was informed that my blood analysis came back positive for Down Syndrome. Within seconds I had transitioned through the gamut of negative emotions. At first, I was shocked, then scared, then devastated. I began to ask myself “How are we going to live a normal life? Can I be a good mother to a child with special needs?”

On the 35th week of my pregnancy, I was rushed to the hospital for an emergency C-section. When I saw Ethan’s face for the first time I knew I loved him. I loved his smile, his perfect almond shaped eyes, and the cutest button nose you

will ever see. He took my breath away. Although, the negative emotions still lingered, with the support of organizations like Sharing Down Syndrome Arizona, and Down Syndrome Network of Arizona, I found hope for the future.

Ethan is now 7 years old.

Although he is doing great, he continues to have challenges.

One thing I’ve learned is that there’s only one Ethan. Just like no two “typical” kids are alike, there are no two children with Down Syndrome that are alike.

Autism. The autism diagnosis has helped us understand why Ethan struggles with a sensory disorder, aggressive behavior, feeding challenges, and sensitivity to large crowds.

What stands out more than the challenges though, is the joy that Ethan has brought to our lives.

He has taught us to celebrate even the smallest victories and to capture key life lessons such as never take anything for granted, patience, generosity, true love, and how to always look at the glass half full.

One of Ethan’s challenges, like many with Down Syndrome, is low muscle tone, which makes it more difficult to roll over, crawl, walk, jump, eat, talk, and even have bowel movements. Starting young with therapies helps develop and strengthen muscle tone so these milestones can be achieved.

I love my son and I’m truly grateful for this journey. So, if you happen to see my beautiful son at Marley Park Elementary or a local park, please feel free to say hi to him. He loves high fives or knuckles!

Another challenge for my son is a new diagnosis that we just received last October. Eight to nine percent of children with Down Syndrome also have

HOME SWEET HOME Given that we live in the land of 300 days of sunshine a year, it’s no wonder that more and more homeowners are turning to solar (or as it’s officially called, a photovoltaic power system) to generate electricity and avoid ever increasing utility costs.

But what, if anything, will that (average) $15,000 investment in solar add to the value of your home?

The answer to that depends on whether the solar system is owned outright or leased.

Studies show that an average sized solar array that is a few years old and is owned by a home seller will add approximately $6,000 to $10,000 in value to a home. In my experience, owned solar also helps homes sell faster!

Homes with leased solar systems don’t fare so well. Appraisers don’t consider leased solar panels when calculating the value of a home. Because the system is not part of the collateral for the mortgage, lenders do not consider it an asset. Some studies have even shown that homes with solar leased panels

can detract 3 to 8 percent from the value of a home in the Phoenix metro area.

That said, my team and I have collectively sold more than a dozen homes with owned and leased solar. As a listing agent, I’ve only run into a problem selling a home with leased solar once…and even that home did eventually sell! The most important considerations when leasing solar are the terms of the lease. Leases with increasing payments over time are particularly problematic when it comes time to sell the home and transfer that lease to a potential buyer, so look for a company with consistent lease payments throughout the life of the lease.

If you’re considering solar, but don’t have the cash to buy the system outright, I recommend looking into financing. When you finance a system, you still own

it and it will still be considered an asset to an appraiser when it comes time to sell or re-finance.

In fact, depending on the equity in your home, you may be able to refinance after the solar is installed and use the equity to pay off all or some of the solar financing. Keep in mind that if you still owe on the solar financing when it’s time to sell, you will most likely have to pay it off at closing along with your mortgage balance, if any.

Bug Guy

If you live in Phoenix, Arizona, especially in the outer cities like Surprise, you have probably seen a scorpion or two, or even three.

Although these creepy crawlers are visually frightening, their armorlike bodies and Edward Scissor Hand pinchers, (only a small part of their naturally intriguing existence), make them one of the coolest looking creatures on earth.

Scorpions glow under UV light, which makes scorpion hunting an actual thing. Because these creatures are nocturnal, you can usually find them hiding in the cracks and crevices of walls, underneath rocks, and under the bark of trees during the day.

Scorpions tend to live in areas with temperatures ranging from 68 to 99 degrees but they can handle much more extreme temperatures.

Researchers have even frozen scorpions overnight, only to put them in the sun the next day and watch them thaw out and walk away. Tough little guys to say the least!

Scorpions are also excellent parents. They allow their babies to ride on their backs for protection. Although it is very rare to find a large group of scorpions hanging around, they do enjoy the company of others and sometimes spend the winter months with masses of their own.

There are approximately 2,000 species of scorpions. All scorpions are technically considered poisonous; but fewer than 25 species can actually kill humans.

I think we can all agree that is a relief. However, it’s always a good idea to be aware of your surroundings.

Aggravating this creature can result in a

very painful sting. Small children and elderly people are more susceptible to allergic reactions from scorpion stings. So be very careful if you happen to spot one in your home.

Scorpions have an evolutionary history that dates back to 430 million years! Yes, you read that correctly. They have been around forever and have earned some major respect. These interesting creatures not only look cool but they are tough as well. That said, you would not want to live with them.

Keeping your home free of other bugs which attract scorpions will prevent invasion. If you already have a scorpion problem, make sure the pest control company you contact, uses a high-quality solution with residual effects.

This November, Surprise residents have an opportunity to vote in a Special Election. Voters will be asked three General Obligation Bond questions requesting funding for 10 projects in the areas of public safety, traffic congestion mitigation, and pavement preservation.

Your vote is your voice… so register to vote! Because this is a Special Election in an odd numbered year, it is Ballot by Mail; that means all registered voters in Surprise will automatically receive a 2017 election ballot in the mail.

Get registered to vote by the October 10th deadline at http:// maricopa.vote or visit the Surprise City Clerk’s Office Monday through Friday between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Ballots will be mailed on October 11th. Inperson replacement ballot voting and ballot drop-off begins Wednesday, October 11th as well.

The Surprise City Hall City Clerk’s Office is located at 16000 N Civic Center Plaza and is open Monday through Friday between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. with extended hours from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Election Day, November 7th.

Positive Parenting When you think of your school’s PTA, you may think we are nothing more than a bunch of stuck up moms, bake sales and social clichés. Thanks to Hollywood, we can’t seem to break that stigma. PTA is so much more than bake sales and a popularity contest amongst moms. Believe it or not, our whole goal is to focus on the betterment of our community and our children’s school. Sure, we fundraise. But did you know our funds go right back into the school? Take Marley Park PTA. Last year we raised enough funds to purchase $10,000 in chrome books for the school. We donated $8,000 which was used to fund field trips for each grade level.

We gave back over $4,000 to our teachers to purchase supplies for their classrooms. We funded 3 family fun nights which are completely FREE for our families.

We raised $6,400 in scholastic funds, which we used to purchase Scholastic readers for each grade level to use as part of their classroom curriculum. And that is just the tip of the iceberg.

The upcoming school year we are focusing on Literacy. We will be raising funds and requesting grants from local sources to help grow our library in hopes to entice more young readers with newer titles and restore the love for books.

Being a volunteer can be a very exhausting job. PTA members spend countless hours planning, brainstorming, budgeting and coordinating events which equates to hours away from our families. The reward is completely worth, it in my opinion. This year alone we raised over $121,000 to support our awesome school.

With the help of our parents, volunteers and

PTA members, we are the highest grossing PTA in the district. This is what it means to be a member of the PTA. So, the next time you see a PTA board member and they ask you if you would like to become a part of something amazing, please consider joining us and making a difference. We promise you we will not make you eat a live chicken!

PTA is for everybody. Moms, dads, grandparents, teachers, local business owners, neighbors, or anyone in the community!

PTA’s mission is to make every child’s potential a reality by engaging and empowering families and communities to advocate for ALL children. You do not join the PTA to be famous or achieve some level of popularity.

You don’t join to sell brownies.

The number one reason to join PTA is to benefit your child and your local community.

Protect Your Teeth While Playing Sports As a dental professional, I encourage all of my patients, friends, and family to wear mouthguards while playing any contact sport. Many contact sports require you to wear one. Even if it is not required, I strongly encourage my patients who participate in sports such as football, basketball, soccer, lacrosse, hockey and martial arts to protect their teeth and face with a custom mouthguard.

Custom mouthguards are an integral piece of sports equipment that can improve performance while preventing dentofacial injuries. Some of the popular, non-custom mouthguards that are available on the market can be distracting to players because of their poor fit. An ill-fitting mouthguard is not only uncomfortable, but also less effective at protecting against impact, injury and damage.

athletes. You can speak with them and you can breath easily while wearing them.

Even if you’re someone who doesn’t usually bother with a mouthguard, you’ll want to reconsider if you are wearing braces. Even a minor hit to the mouth can cause a lot of pain! Because your teeth are moving, you may think that a custom made mouthguard won’t fit very long. This is far from the truth! Custom mouthguards can be designed to work with your braces. They also protect your lips and the soft tissue of your mouth from cuts and damage while you’re playing sports.

Another important thing for athletes to consider is protecting their teeth from cavities caused by sugary sports drinks. If you’re

sipping Gatorade, Powerade or other sports drinks with a high sugar content throughout practice and games, you need to stop! The best, and healthiest, option for hydrating during sports activities is water. If you have an occasional sports drink, rinse your mouth with water after you finish drinking it.

Storm Safety

The monsoons have arrived – and this year they are stronger than ever! It is important to take basic safety precautions so be sure to: 1. Stay aware of the weather in your area.

2. Never drive through flooded roadways! Driving too fast through standing water can cause a car to hydroplane. During heavy rains, the best defense is to pull off the road (with lights off) and wait out heavy rains. Be especially cautious at night, as flood dangers are much more

difficult to see in the dark.

If your vehicle is caught in rising water, leave it immediately and seek higher ground; as little as ten inches of water can float average sized vehicles.

3. “When thunder roars, go indoors!” There is no place outside that is safe from a lightning strike. Once you are inside, don’t unplug or touch wiring during a thunder storm. Stop using corded phones and playing video games connected to a TV. Plumbing can

conduct lightning, as well, so put off using showers, sinks, etc. until after the storm has passed.

4. Bring animals inside before a storm starts.

Thunder and lightning are very scary for pets and they are likely to panic or even run away to try and escape the storm.

Mind Body Balance

Have you heard? Marley Park now has a Yoga Club! Jon and Chris Cavaletto, Marley Park residents and Certified Yoga Instructors, are founders of the club. The first event was held last month and attendance was fantastic!

Yoga is an ancient practice that encompasses many different elements beyond the poses you may be familiar with. Most yoga practices also focus on your breath, mindset, and overall well-being. That makes yoga a practice that can truly benefit anybody — no matter how old you are, what shape you’re in, or what physical challenges you have.

Yoga, the union of mind and body, is considered one of many types of complementary and integrative health approaches.

Yoga brings together physical and mental disciplines that may help you achieve peacefulness of body and mind. This can help you relax and manage stress and anxiety.

Yoga has many styles, forms, and intensities. Outside the structure of a yoga class, a yoga way of life incorporates a healthy lifestyle of clean eating, kindness, selfless giving/volunteering, and integrity.

The core components of yoga and most general yoga classes are: 1. Asanas (yoga poses also known as postures) -

Poses range from lying on the floor while completely relaxed to difficult postures that may have you stretching your physical limits.

Treasure Hunt

Paint a rock --- place it in a public space ---make somebody’s day!

Did you know about the growing trend that involves hiding and finding painted rocks. It is a recent social media phenomenon, and now there is a local Surprise Facebook page that is attributed to the trend; ‘Surprise AZ Rocks’, which is administered by Marley Park resident, Keli Lara.

Here’s how it works for Surprise AZ Rocks - and generally for the other groups on social media as well:

1.

Get a rock and decorate it with permanent paint or marker, such as a Sharpie.

2.

Include the message, such as “Keep or hide, you decide! #SurpriseAZRocks” on the bottom.

3.

Hide it in a public space.

4.

Share a picture and a clue where it is on the @Surprise AZ Rocks Facebook page.

5.

Make the day of somebody who finds it as they walk through a park or other public space.

If you happen to find a rock as you’re walking through a local park or public space, share a picture of the rock and where you found it on

the Surprise AZ Rocks Facebook page.

There are a couple of rules to follow. The rocks should only be hidden on public property. The rocks shouldn’t be decorated with stickers, glitter or other items that could fall off and cause litter or endanger wildlife. Also, the rock art should remain friendly and family oriented. Some of the rocks are painted by professional local artists, many are painted by youth, and, regardless of what they look like, they are all a gem to find. Most are created with love, and have made many smiles!

As a mom of two who likes to keep her daughters busy with projects, I’ve found this activity to be especially fun, as it engages the community! Happy rock hunting!

Money Matters Here are a few tips to make your online transactions safer: 1.

Meet in a public place with high visibility.

Busy grocery store parking lots are a good option.

Local buy/sell/trade groups have been popping up on Facebook over the past few years. In many areas, these groups have surpassed websites like Craig’s List and apps such as Offer Up for online sales to the local community.

Many people find themselves meeting with a stranger to complete a deal that they brokered online. It’s a good idea to take safety into consideration when conducting transactions through on-line connections.

2. When possible, take a friend or family member with you so you are not alone. If you are unable to take a companion, be sure to notify someone of your destination and expected return time.

3. Meet during daylight hours, as streets and public places are busier during the day. Refrain

from meeting at night and especially dark places.

4. Be aware of scams!

5. Always check the items you are buying and be sure they meet your expectations before paying the seller.

6. Avoid last minute location changes. This can sometimes be a red flag.

Always go with your gut!

If something doesn’t feel right, let it go. It’s not worth the risk.

7. Deal with cash. Paying by check or credit/debit card can increase the risk of identity theft.

Buying and selling is a great way to make a little extra cash or get a great deal on something, but safety should be your first priority. Be smart and follow these simple safety rules!

Peace On Earth Live Today

“Forget the former things; do not dwell on the past. See, I am doing a new thing!”

(Isaiah 43:18-19a) We have a creative God who is always ready with something new. This scripture passage is a prophecy about the coming of Jesus. However, it is also applicable to our willingness to embrace the new thing God is doing in our lives when things fail to remain constant. Stuff happens and our loving God guides us into the new.

Just when we believe we’ll remain in our current position until retirement, the job is relocated or eliminated. Just when we think we’ve purchased our final home, we must move. When we think we’re set financially, the market changes. When we find the new club or activity, the facilitator moves.

Life is about moving into ‘new normals’. Little stays constant and we resist every change. If we

aren’t careful, we begin to live in the past – longing for ‘the way things were.’

next corner, more spontaneous, because we discover we can embrace and thrive with change.

However, if I had remained a teacher, I would have missed the joy of pastoring a church!

This is true if we don’t get stuck in the past.

If my children had remained little, I would not have the joy of grandchildren. If my daughter had not moved to Alaska, I would not have the excuse to take vacations there.

If I had remained in Flagstaff, it’s true I wouldn’t have to live in the heat of Phoenix, but I also would not have made all the great new friends to add to the friends I still have in Flagstaff. If my first perfect dog had lived forever, I would not have enjoyed three remarkable dogs since.
