Welcome to your July edition!

Can you believe that summer in Arizona is already half over? The kids will be starting school again in just four short weeks! Be sure to make the most of what’s left of summer…check out our cover story for the details on 4th of July events in Marley Park and the City of Surprise!

If you’re lucky enough to be travelling to cooler weather this month, enjoy it! We are going to my home state of Michigan to visit family. As much as I love Arizona, I’m looking forward to getting out of the heat for a few days this month!

On a more serious note, be sure to read the update about the Christopher Todd Properties apartment complex proposed for the vacant land behind Marley Park Elementary School. The Committee to Protect the Marley Park Vison has been working hard to get the developer and the City of Surprise to comply with the original Planned Area Development design.

They have made a lot of progress, but need your support now, more than ever!

On Our Cover The 4th of July is a day to commemorate the birth of American independence and everything red, white and blue. Come celebrate with your neighbors in Marley Park!

The festivities kick off on Sunday, July 2 from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Heritage Pool House with the “Decorate Your Wheels� event! Get ready for the Patriotic Parade on the 4th by decorating your bike, scooter, stroller, wagon, or golf cart for only $5 per set of wheels (which covers not only decorating materials but light refreshments, too) and visiting with friends and neighbors.

On July 4th Boy Scout Troop 194 will be hosting a Pancake Breakfast from 7:30 to 10:30 a.m. at the Heritage Club. A minimum $5 donation is suggested and all money raised will go to support our local Boy Scouts.

Registration for the Patriotic Parade starts at 8 a.m. at Marley Park (at 153rd Ave. & Valentine St - just follow the patriotic music!) with participants lining up at 8:30 a.m. and the parade commencing at 9 a.m. Bring your bike, scooter, stroller, wagon or golf cart (or just march!) and come participate or just come watch along the parade route as local families, Boy Scout and Girl Scout troops, and the Surprise Police and Fire Departments demonstrate their patriotic spirit!

Bring your blanket and lawn chair and laze around or take a dip in our community pools. The cost is $9 per person (children 2 and younger are free) and advance registration is required.

If you have any energy left after celebrating here in Marley Park, the city of Surprise will also be celebrating with a free (with a food donation) rookie league baseball game at the Surprise Stadium (doors open at 4:30 p.m.) followed by a fireworks show after the game (around 8:30 p.m.). Too hot to go to a game? The Surprise Aquatic Center (which is across from the stadium so it offers a great view of the fireworks show) is having a 4th of July Pool Party from 6 to 8:30 p.m. (Tickets are $6 each for Surprise residents. Community News The city of Surprise has submitted their response regarding the recently submitted plans for the apartment home complex they propose to build behind Marley Park Elementary to Christopher Todd Properties. Some design modifications we felt were key to complying with the Marley Park PAD design requirements and guidelines were not included but many were addressed. It is now time to seek legal advice regarding how we should engage the city next regarding their inadequate response to the developer’s plan.

Therefore, The Committee to Protect Marley Vision is now Protect Marley Vision, Inc. (thanks to Jim Santmyer, CPA, who graciously donated his time and expertise). This means Protect Marley Vision, Inc. can now accept donations to help defray the cost of operations (website hosting, presentation materials, etc.) and legal advice. Donations are not tax deductible and a financial statement showing donations and operating expenses will be posted monthly on our website. We also intend to remain active until all development has been completed in Marley Park to ensure the PAD remains the standard for all future development in our community.

POOL SAFETY The weather is heating up, which means it’s POOL TIME! Here is a quick list of things to remember while you are enjoying the beautiful Marley Park pools this summer: Pools are for the use of MPCA members and their guests only (up to four guests are allowed per household, including children).

In addition to your key fob, be sure to bring identification with you when enjoying the pool. This year, in response to increased amenity use and resident concerns, additional MPCA ambassadors have been hired to help monitor the amenities; they may ask residents for identification (per the MPCA Resident Agreement).

The MPCA ambassadors will also be enforcing the pool rules. Since Maricopa county conducts surprise audits (and can fine the MPCA or even shut down the pools if they find rule violations), it is important that residents follow the following rules: • No glass or ceramic items are allowed anywhere within the pool complex. (Broken glass can pose a serious safety hazard, and its presence anywhere near the pool requires the pool to be shut down, drained, vacuumed thoroughly and refilled, a time consuming and expensive process.)

• Bikes, scooters, skateboards, etc. are not allowed in the pool area (so they must remain in the breezeway).

Remember, too, that the Marley Park pools do not have lifeguards; MPCA ambassadors are there only to monitor access and to make sure people observe the rules. Please be sure to watch your children carefully!

• No inflatable armband “floaties” (since these can slip off. Swimsuits with the built-in floatation device are okay, though!).

• Swim diapers must be worn by all children who are not toilet trained. (Regular diapers are not allowed in the pool.)

• No diving, flipping, or running along the pool deck.

• Children under the age of 14 must be in the presence of a parent/guardian (over age 18).

One question I get asked on a regular basis is, “how’s the market”? The answer usually depends on whether you’re a buyer or a seller! If it’s a sellers’ market and you’re a seller, it’s great! But if you’re a buyer in a sellers’ market, the market may not be ideal for you. Conversely, if you’re a buyer in a buyers’ market, that means lots of inventory and high negotiating power! However, if you’re a seller in a buyers’ market, you’re competing with lots of other homes on the market and it can be tougher and take longer to sell. This may sound confusing, but it’s as simple as the laws of supply and demand.

and the number of home buyers and sellers has equalized. A balanced real estate market will have 5 to 7 months of inventory available. (Months of inventory is calculated by dividing the number of current listings in the Multiple Listing Service (MLS) by the average number of sales per month during the prior 12 months.) The result is the number of months it would take to sell all properties currently for sale at the average monthly sales pace.

If the “months of inventory” number is below 5 it is a sellers’ market and you will see prices increase sharply and it will be more difficult (and expensive) for buyers to find homes. If the “months of inventory” exceeds 7 months it is a buyers’ market and home prices will decline and sellers will have to work harder and be more patient to sell their home.

In a balanced market, like the one we are currently experiencing, home sales prices are close to active listing prices and properly priced homes are usually sold within 30 to 45 days.

A Tale of Two Seas How would you describe a healthy relationship?

Like most of us, we desire to be in a relationship that is joyful and fulfilling, and free of drama and arguments. Recently on a trip to Israel, I was reminded how The Sea of Galilee and The Dead Sea can represent insight into understanding how to have a healthy relationship.

The Sea of Galilee is a fresh water sea providing drinking water throughout the region, as well as a popular area for recreation and tourism. The Dead Sea, just 88 miles south, produces exactly what the name suggests…death. It contains a significant concentration of sodium chloride, with saline levels surpassing that of ocean water, making the lake unhabitable for life to exist within the sea (however you can float like a boat which is pretty cool J).

So why and how do these two seas provide a picture of a healthy relationship? The answer can be found in the river they share - The Jordan River.

In Hebrew, “jor” means “spreading” and “dan” means “judge” or “judgment”. Thus, the Jordan River equals the spreading of judgment. The very river that provides resources to these two bodies of water also teaches us that what we do with those resources provides a judgment.

The resource in a relationship is love. Love has been said to be patient and kind, bearing, believing, and hoping all things towards someone; in fact, love never fails. On the flip side, someone who is selfish, boastful, arrogant or rude does not embody

love. Jesus, who lived in Israel said it this way, “There is no greater display of love than to lay one’s life down for someone else” (John 15:13). Love becomes a picture of an enduring sacrifice giving of oneself to someone else. It’s one thing to receive something in a relationship, but it’s quite another to give one’s self in love without expectation.

What makes this region of Israel so beautiful is that the Sea of Galilee not only receives water from the Jordan River, but it provides and supplies its life-giving resource of water to all the downstream communities. The Dead Sea, however, only receives and never dispenses its life giving resource, becoming a self-seeking cesspool of minerals withholding the very resources that can give life to a community in need.

What type of sea do you want to be? Today, choose to be a resource of love in your relationships with your spouse, children, friends, neighbors, classmates, family, and others, because you deserve the best relationship imaginable.

Bullard Avenue What happened to Bullard Avenue?

Did you see the recent accident involving 10 golf carts on Bullard? Did you see the burned rubber marks on Bullard from the recent street car races?

Have you seen the destroyed crossing sign at Sweetwater & Bullard? Did you know Bullard has 7,000 vehicles and 700 pedestrians each day? This and many other stories encompass much of what I hear from residents about Bullard in Surprise, Arizona. Like it or not...fact or fiction, Bullard Avenue generates a varied emotional response from most residents.

In the summer of 2015, with a variety of circumstances surrounding a new school opening and concerns about Bullard Avenue, the Public Works Department determined the 4-lane road needed to be decreased to 2 lanes, road classification changed from an “arterial” to a “collector” road which included reduced lane speed from 45 to 35 mph and the addition of bike lanes and golf cart lanes.

According to City Manager Bob Wingenroth, Bullard Avenue was changed “to reduce the speed of vehicles and to improve safety.”

One morning, the residents arose to a new 2-lane Bullard Avenue with a bike and golf cart lane and speed reduced to 35 mph, and a community-wide outrage ensued. After hundreds of concerned citizens contacted the City of Surprise, the Bullard Avenue Task Force was compiled to listen to and

address community concerns. Task force member John Norton states “the city put no effort in respecting the citizens. The main premise given for the lane changes was safety, however they could provide absolutely nothing to back up the claims that children would be killed without the changes.”

Others felt the road modifications would be safer for children travelling to and from school.

The 2035 General Plan for the City includes an alternative mode of transportation (such as golf carts) for neighborhood connectivity, making the road safer and slowing down traffic, as well as bike lanes to enhance overcrowded sidewalks and increase family bike riding in our city.

“The Road Diet was intended to calm traffic, changing Bullard from an arterial to a collector road by reducing the speed to 35 mph, while decreasing the reckless driving and volume of vehicles traveling on Bullard Avenue,” says Public Works Director, Mike Gent.

Additional changes will be coming to Bullard Avenue in the future, but the 35 mph speed limit and buffered bike lanes will remain. New permanent street lights are also coming to the intersections of Bullard/Acoma and Bullard/Sweetwater.

FOAM ROLLER The Foam Roller is the round tubular shaped cylinder that you see in most gyms now.

This is not to be confused with the pool noodle that is thinner and not as dense. You may see people rolling around on the floor gritting their teeth or laying on it relaxing and stretching.

Originally the roller was used in physical therapy. The roller is used for SelfMyofascial Release (SMR) which is a form of soft tissue therapy intended for pain relief and increasing range of motion.

Now that you know what it is, why should you be doing self-myofascial release? SMR is used to release restriction in the fascia which is the connective tissue that surrounds the muscles but also runs throughout the body. It helps prevent injury and improve flexibility. Not only has the roller found its way from therapy clinics, to professional sports teams, fitness centers, and gyms, it is now in many types of classes including yoga and Pilates.

When using the foam roller, start with a large muscle area like the glutes. Sit straight legged on the floor with the roller behind you. Place one hand on each end of the roller. Use your legs and arms to lift and prop yourself onto the roller in a seated position. Shift to the right glute and lean back using the right fingers on the floor for balance. Use the legs to slowly move the glute muscle over the roller.

Move from the top of the glute to the area close to where the leg and glute meet. You are creating a rolling pin affect covering a 6-10-inch area.

If you feel like you hit knots those are the areas that need to be rolled. This could cause some slight discomfort. The more you roll the less it will hurt.

Then move to the other glute muscle area on the left and repeat about 5-10 times. When an area is complete take time to stretch, then move the muscles to increase range of motion and release more tension.

Another main area that is recommended to roll is the front of the thighs (quadriceps). Start on hands and knees. Place the roller close to the knees and

Yum Yum! Icebox Cookie Hack: Less time, less money and more yumm!

Who doesn’t love homemade cookies and what kid doesn’t love coming home to a fresh baked batch after a long day? (Ok, kids of all ages.) Well, for those of us with a shortage of time to whip up a homemade batch of cookie dough any time we want to bring out a straight-from-the-oven treat for family or neighbors, here’s an ice box cookie hack just for you.

What you’ll need to have on hand: Wax paper

Gallon size zipper freezer bag Box of Great Value (Walmart) sugar, chocolate chip, or peanut butter cookie mix (approx $2.50/box yielding 6 dozen cookies) Simply follow box instructions (or get creative adding extra vanilla, mix-ins, or butter substitutes), scoop half of the prepared cookie

dough on top a piece of wax paper and form into log roll. Place cookie dough rolls in freezer bag.

Then voilà!!! Next time you want to serve up fresh out of the oven cookies, slice up a few from the cookie roll and bake them at 350 for 8 min or so (depending on thickness of slice).

I love being able to plate up just a few per person for movie night or during a weeknight with no hassle, and I always get the same response... yumm, these are good!
