Welcome to your June edition of The Front Porch magazine! June and July are the most popular months for weddings in the Midwest, where I grew up. I don’t think the same holds true for Arizona since it’s so darn hot here in the summer months. With so many Midwestern transplants, however, it’s a popular time for anniversaries! I just love this month’s cover story about a true and lasting love that started with humble beginnings in a Midwestern church basement. Our neighbors, LeRoy and Sheryl Messenger, have clearly made their marriage more important than their wedding, and they are celebrating 50 years together this month! If you see them holding hands and strolling in our beautiful parks, be sure to tell them congratulations! The summer months tend to be a bit slow for events and activities around here, and many people plan trips to cooler climates. Whether you’re heading to Northern Arizona for a weekend or hopping continents in search of heat-relief, we’d love to hear about it! Submit your 350-400 word article to me at Christie@AZLifestyleTeam.com and share your adventures with the community!

If you are staying in town, there are a few indoor options and a dive-in movie event planned this month so be sure to check out the events page, as well as the Marley Park clubs and groups page. Community events are also regularly added to The Front Porch group on Facebook (TheFrontPorchGroup.com); click on the “events” tab. Lastly, don’t forget to wish your father and all the wonderful father-figures in your life a Happy Fathers’ Day on the 17th! As always, I leave you with one of my favorite quotes… “Coming together is a beginning; keeping together is progress; working together is success.” ~Henry Ford See you on The Front Porch!

On Our Cover
On June 9th, LeRoy and I will celebrate 50 years of marriage. We met in high school in a rural Iowa community and became friends when we played together in band. After attending the local community college, we decided to get married. Our wedding was nothing like weddings today. We were married on a Sunday afternoon and had a reception that consisted of cake, punch, and mints in the church basement. There were formal invitations, but anyone in town who knew us felt comfortable to attend, because our church pastors issued an open invitation to the congregations.
LeRoy continued his studies at the University of Iowa and our first son was born in Iowa City. We moved to the Chicago area following LeRoy’s graduation in 1971 and had two more sons. We retired to Marley Park in September 2017; LeRoy as the CEO of a non-profit and a long career in accounting and finance; and I as the Human Resources Director at a large senior living community. Throughout our marriage, Friday night has been date night. We’ve missed a few, but not many.
6 Estrella Publishing - The Front Porch magazine
Amid our sons’ school and sporting events, we always felt it was important to have some time just for us. Often those date nights were a rented movie and popcorn in the family room after the kids were asleep. As the boys entered their teen years, we often embarrassed them by holding hands in public… something we still do. We now have three wonderful daughters-inlaw and nine grandchildren. We do many things together, but we each have our own interests. LeRoy enjoys photography and I am an avid quilter. We’ve faced many ups and downs, always knowing that together we would be ok. We are looking forward to celebrating later this year on an Alaskan cruise with friends. Submitted by Sheryl Messenger | Marley Park Resident

Home Sweet Home You’ve heard the old saying “you can’t compare apples and oranges.” Well, when it comes to real estate in Marley Park, we have apples, oranges, and bananas. The three distinct types of homes in our neighborhood are single family homes on full size lots, single family “courtyard” homes on small lots, and attached homes, often referred to as “duplexes” with no private yard space.
Generally, a full-size lot is one that is 5,500 square feet or larger. Occasionally a lot size between 5,000-5,500 square feet is also considered full size, when the footprint of the home is small enough to leave a larger back yard space. When a home’s lot size is under 5,000 square feet, it is considered a “courtyard home,” as these homes typically have a small private back or side yard. Attached homes in Marley Park come in pairs and are commonly referred to as “duplexes” or sometimes “townhomes.” Technically, a townhome is a two story attached home and typically connected in rows of three or more, so the use of the term townhome or townhouse in Marley Park is a bit of a misnomer. Some of the attached homes in Marley Park are single story
10 Estrella Publishing - The Front Porch magazine
as well, which would make them more accurately “patio homes.” The big advantage of the attached homes in Marley Park is that they usually border expansive common area green spaces and/or parks. The bottom line is Marley Park is not your typical neighborhood, so the homes here are not your typical homes! There truly is something for everyone in Marley Park, and whether you are looking for the back yard of your dreams or a low-maintenance lock-and-leave lifestyle, Marley Park has it! Because of our many unique housing options, it’s important to consult a real estate agent who understands the diverse nature of the neighborhood when determining the current market value of your home. Comparing “apples to apples” is imperative and only homes that are the same type and style should be considered. Your neighborhood real estate specialist will always be happy to send you a list of comparable homes, as well as keep you updated on new listings and sales through email alerts. Your home may be your biggest investment; you should know what it’s worth, even if you’re not planning to sell! Submitted by Christie Giannetto | REALTOR® | Arizona Lifestyle Team | HomeSmart

Backyard Gardening Humankind has an innate desire to harvest crops produced through their own efforts. Aquaponics has given us a way to meet those desires without dedicating our lives to a plot of land.
An aquaponics system in your backyard can provide enough vegetation to feed a single person for a year and should also have a substantial fish harvest. Being an elevated garden, the amount of pest exposure is reduced and bending over is no longer necessary. Using a grow media eliminates the need for imported soil as well as any weeding that
12 Estrella Publishing - The Front Porch magazine
would normally take place.
Aquaponics is a combination of aquaculture and hydroponics. The two systems are married in a way that samples the positive aspects of both systems while eliminating the negative side of gardening. An aquaculture system would require the removal of nutrient rich water, and a hydroponics system would need expensive nutrients. When the two are combined the nutrients are produced by fish waste and the water is cleansed by plants and grow media. A pump draws water from a tank that holds fish and disperses it into a grow bed that harbors the plants. As the grow bed is flooded, the plants remove the nutrients from the water before it’s drained back into the tank. Using a bell siphon that consists of an outer pipe with notches in the bottom to allow water to enter and an inner pipe with notches in the top to allow water to flow over the pipe, a siphon is created then broken in a cyclical manner. These systems can be fashioned out of anything that will hold water and are completely scalable. Towers can be purchased to provide high yield with a minimal footprint or a system like mine that takes up about fifteen square feet. There is no better way to control how your produce is processed, and your neighbors will appreciate your efforts as well. Submitted by Robert Cruthis | Marley Park Resident

Celebrating Differences I grew up with children who had disabilities as well as children with mental illnesses. I’ve been around it my whole life, but there is always so much more to learn. Every person is so different. When I was in elementary school in the Chandler Unified School District during the 1990’s, there was only one school in the district that had a special education program. I went to one school; my sisters went on a different school bus to a different school that was much further away. We were kept separate. Most people didn’t seem to know how to handle someone with special needs. During my elementary school days, I found myself in quite a few fist fights trying to protect my sisters from the insults of other children. Throughout the 1990’s major strides were made in legislation in the United States to better accommodate and further assimilate those with special needs into the population. The American public began changing. I watched it change over the span of my childhood. In 2001, during my second semester of freshman year, I was attending a high school called Hamilton High in Chandler. Changes were already taking place, my sisters and I not only attended the same school, we had the same lunch hour. Things were changing. They were eating lunch with everyone else without
any issues, just as I always felt they should be. One day during lunch there was a karaoke contest on the stage and different students were getting up and singing. A couple students from my sisters’ special education class decided to get on stage and sing a song. The crowd of teenagers eating their lunches went silent and everyone watched as these students sang and danced on stage. My heart sank, as I remembered much of the teasing that I had gotten into fights about before. I felt my chest tighten as I awaited the reaction of the crowd. I just knew everyone would act like jerks. I resented them all already. The song finished. For a split second there was silence. Then, from a table in the front a teenage boy from the football team stood up and started clapping. Seconds later the rest of the team was standing and clapping. Then the entire room was in loud applause. I was shocked. So much more has improved since I was in high school. Legislation, integration, assimilation and most importantly the American attitude. I am thankful for the efforts of everyone throughout the 1990’s to now. I am grateful for that teenage boy on the football team. I don’t know who he was or what he even looked like, but I will always remember that moment. Submitted by Hannah Willett | Marley Park Resident

David Cardosi Marley Park resident, David Rene Cardosi, 59 years of age, passed away on March 29, 2018 peacefully in his sleep from heart complications. He was born on May 3, 1958 to Rene Cardosi and Marie DeCarlo in Jersey City, New Jersey.
David was intellectually brilliant. He had an unforgettable laugh, wicked sense of humor, and a charming smile. His wife, Tannia, used to call him the mayor of Surprise because everywhere they went, people knew him. He was kind, selfless, and loving. His family loved his hugs, which remain one of a kind. He lived his life to the fullest with Tannia and their three children Eric, Veronica and Liliana. For those of you who didn’t know him intimately, he was a martial arts, weight lifting, gun shooting, and anti-aging supplement enthusiast. During his free time, he would hike, nap, and read medical books and journals to continually help others. He taught his children the meaning of hope through his daily example as a father and especially during his last 3 years of work with The EuroMed Foundation where he spent his days as a medical

practitioner helping those battling cancer using holistic methods. David’s medical career began with a full scholarship to the UT Southwestern in Dallas, TX, where he studied medicine. He practiced Emergency Medicine in a Trauma 2 hospital for 13 years which is where he met Tannia. Additionally, he practiced four years of urgent care and three years of oncology. When David began working at EuroMed he told his Tannia, “I’ve finally found my purpose as a healer”. David is survived by his wife, Tannia Cardosi, his daughters; Veronica and Liliana, his son; Eric, and his sister; Christine Tritt. Legal Advice HEALTH CARE POWERS OF ATTORNEY
The medical healthcare power of attorney identifies an agent, such as a trusted family member or friend, who can give consent to medical treatment if you cannot. If insurance requires transfer to a skilled nursing facility before going home from the hospital, your agent can arrange that for you.
If a person does not have these healthcare powers of attorney, the court must give authority to act. An attorney is needed for the patient and a different attorney for the petitioner. After a court investigation, a hearing is held in open court— in about 45 days after a petition is filed. Time, money and privacy is saved by appointing an agent through healthcare powers of attorney. Sharon Ravenscroft, Esq., The Cavanagh Law Firm, PA, Sun City and Phoenix offices, (623) 815-7451 or Sravenscroft@CavanaghLaw. com. Different from other states, the Arizona allows you to authorize your health care agent to follow your instructions for burial or cremation. Otherwise, when there is no surviving spouse, all of the children or other family members may have to be consulted. Another difference from other states is the mental healthcare power of attorney which helps avoid costly court intervention when there is mental illness, brain injury, dementia or Alzheimer’s.
