Welcome to your May edition of The Front Porch magazine!

I know I say this almost every month, but May is one of my favorite months! This will be my eighteenth summer in Arizona and although the coming heat garners dread from most people, the rising temps are still something I look forward to after growing up in the frigid winters and unreliable summers of Michigan. Last summer we bought a huge “Rubber Dockie” floating raft to take to Lake Pleasant and had a blast grilling burgers and cooling off in the water while the kids explored the shoreline. (I won’t go so far as to call it a “beach”!) We’ll be going once a month again, beginning this month through August or September, so if you’re looking for a different way to cool off, let me know…we’d love to have you join us!

Speaking of grilling burgers, be sure to check out the article in this issue written by Marley Park resident, 13-year-old Emily Poling.

Emily has a very mature perspective on the meaning of Memorial Day for her age; it’s not just about grilling out and enjoying the weather.

Joseph Marak, showcases one of our country’s many military heroes, a man with strong ties to Arizona. Mr. Marak shared with me that he believes the last paragraph of the article sums up the sacrifice made by our servicemen, both past and present, who have given their lives for our country and way of life. I agree.

If you want to stay closer to home, take a stroll over to the Veterans’ Commemorative Plaza of the West Valley, located right here In Marley Park at the corner of N Founders Park Blvd and W Pershing St. You’ll find a five-sided pedestal representing each of the five branches of our armed services, surrounded by bricks commemorating the service of our military personnel, including some who gave the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom.

Our May cover photo of 1st Lt. Homer C. “Joe” Biggs, Jr. U.S. Army Special Forces (Retired), was taken in 1942 in Glendale, AZ at what was then “Thunderbird Field,” a WWII Primary Flying School. Today the site is better known as the ASU School of Global Management.

There are still remnants of the old flying school to include a recently remodeled WW II Airfield tower and barracks that are now dorms along with one hangar. Joe also attended his Aviation Cadet Indoctrination at Williams Army Airfield in Chandler, AZ, which later became Williams AFB and is now an airpark/commercial site for the City of Chandler.

On Our Cover 1st Lt. Homer C. “Joe” Biggs, Jr. U.S. Army Special Forces (Retired)

To relate the story of this courageous young man we must turn back the pages of time to the early 1930s to Grand Junction’s Lincoln Park gridiron where the new kid in town rapidly gained acceptance and respect amongst his fellow athletes. Joe was a standout guard on the Grand Junction Tiger varsity football squad. In 1933, the Tigers won the Western Slope Championship.

In 1934, Joe packed his bags and moved to Colorado Springs where he again donned a Tiger uniform---this time playing for the Colorado College Bengals under the tutelage of Alabama’s legendary first All-American, Coach Bully Van de Graaff. Joe captained the Bengals and garnered Rocky Mountain All-Conference honors.

The winds of war blew hard across America and following the December 7th Japanese surprise attack on Pearl Harbor that began with the utterance of Tora, Tora, Tora, translated Tiger, Tiger, Tiger, Joe Biggs was Army Air Corps bound. He received his silver aviator’s wings on August 27, 1942.

In February 1943, Joe arrived in England and was assigned to the 91st Bombardment Group, nicknamed “The Ragged Irregulars.”

On a May 13, 1943 mission, the “Abbeville Kids” wheeled their yellow-nosed FW-190s into Joe’s B-17 Flying Fortress as they flew in the infamous “Purple Heart Corner.” The Homer Biggs Crew went down killing Joe and five of his crewmembers.

A person dies only when their memory is forgotten. Joe’s life began April 15, 1917 in the small town of Ignacio, Colorado and abruptly ended May 13, 1943 in a small field in northern France. The dates are not important, they merely reflect a mark in time on a calendar, but what is really of value is what is represented in the dash between these dates.

In his dash of 26 years, Homer C. “Joe” Biggs, Jr. left a mark on this earth that shall long be remembered. He selflessly gave to all who knew him the pride of accomplishment through his intestinal fortitude and unwavering character as he lived his life with the “Tenacity of a Tiger.”

Memorial Day Memorial Day: Beyond the Celebrations

Every year, millions of Americans from across the United States gather with friends and family to barbecue and trade stories late into the night. But few really know the meaning behind the holiday known as Memorial Day. Many recognize the importance of Veterans Day, which is celebrated in Mid-November, but not all see past the sales and parties of the three-day weekend occurring on the last Monday of May. Though many consider Memorial Day and Veterans Day to be the same thing, they are different, and that’s what makes remembering Memorial Day so important. Veterans Day is a way to honor all military men and women, past and present, but Memorial Day focuses more on those individuals who gave the ultimate sacrifice for their country; their life.

It began in the years following the Civil War, when it became tradition to go to the graves of the fallen soldiers on the 30th of May. Friends, family, and neighbors would honor those lost in the war. The tradition carried on for a century,

and it wasn’t until the 1970s that Memorial Day became an official federal holiday and the date was moved to the last Monday in May. Cities all around the country celebrate this momentous holiday with parades every year, often incorporating military personnel into the production.

Memorial Day is too often dismissed as a meaningless holiday that simply gives Americans young and old a day off from school and work, but the date is about more than just gathering with friends and neighbors around a grill to welcome the summer months. It is a tribute to the brave men and women who embodied the best of America by serving until the very end.

Home Sweet Home Last month, one of the big online real estate companies announced they are getting into the business of buying homes. Like other “quick sale” investment companies, they will offer below market prices in exchange for the convenience of selling fast without the need for staging, prepping for photos, etc. In the past year, I’ve had several clients who have found these conveniences worth sacrificing maximum profits. In fact, I’ve represented sellers numerous times where the “buyer” has been an investment companies. So far, it has worked out well for all involved.

You may have heard “horror stories” about the exorbitant fees charged or the unreasonable repairs requested, but that’s not always the case.

Often, the fees are close to what you would be paying in agent commissions plus buyer concessions anyway, and repairs are part of a traditional sale as well.

The good news is, you sell your home to an investor and STILL have your own agent representation. An experienced agent will go over ALL your options with you and help you determine the advantages and disadvantages of selling the traditional way vs. directly to an

investor who will flip the property for a profit.

Like anything else in life, there are pros and cons for each option. If you’re considering selling to an investor, be sure to contact a knowledgeable local real estate agent FIRST. You’ll want to get a value analysis of your home BEFORE requesting an offer from an investment company, so you can be aware of how much profit you might be sacrificing. Also, like anything else in life, everything is negotiable! Although the lists of repairs sent by investors can be daunting, a good agent can help you determine which ones you can do yourself, which ones you can have done by a tradesperson at a lower cost, and which ones should be declined.

It’s important to realize that you won’t net less profit by having your own agent. Most of the investors factor in a 6% commission PLUS their holding costs and you could easily end up paying more in fees and repair costs without an agent to help you negotiate. Look for an agent with experience working with investors and contact him/her FIRST so you can educate yourself before making a decision.

Mindfulness

It’s estimated that 48% of the time, we’re not present. We’re thinking about the past, we’re wondering about the future, we’re planning our day, our shopping list, our chores, we’re preoccupied with something else rather than being “in the moment.” We don’t really listen to our kids, our friends, our spouses, because our minds are somewhere else. We walk outside and don’t feel the breeze, or appreciate the blue sky above us, the trees around us, or see the moonlight at night.

How about you? When you let your mind go where does it go? Have you ever taken the time to consider this? Most of us have a default way of thinking that we’re not even aware of. In fact, several research studies have shown that up to 98% of the thoughts we think today are the same we were thinking yesterday and will be the same tomorrow. It’s no wonder that the thoughts running through our heads can give us a sense of being trapped in our mind, and all the while we’re missing the moment unfolding within and around us.

Wouldn’t you like to be able to supervise your thoughts rather than being led around by them?

Wouldn’t you like to really show up for the people in your life and the moments in your days? Here’s a simple but profound exercise you can try every day to do just that. To change your thought patterns, you must start with an awareness of them.

Start by being aware that the thoughts you think are not who you are. They’re just thoughts.

Thoughts your brain has learned to repeat. Which ones don’t serve you? Which ones make you feel bad about yourself or others? Which ones dwell in the past, or worry needlessly about the future?

Which ones are stressful, anxious, or angry?

Picture this time as cleaning out the cupboards, emptying them so you can look at everything before you decide what to put back in. You’re lifting the rugs and looking underneath.

And next, you can decide what you’d rather be thinking. Mindfully and deliberately choose positive thoughts, helpful thoughts, creative thoughts, loving, compassionate thoughts; thoughts that motivate and serve you.

It really IS your choice. Every day - it’s your choice to consider your thoughts and to supervise them wisely - repeatedly - until the ones you want are automatic and bring you peace and strength.

Giving Back

Attending a Feed My Staring Children food packing event has been on my family’s bucket list for years. However, unlike the events that I’ve been organizing at Valley View Community Food Bank since 2013, volunteers must be five years old to participate, so it wasn’t something we could do until our youngest turned five last September.

Shortly after her 5th birthday, I went to the FMSC website with plans to sign up for a packing event, but found that they fill up quickly and there is always a waiting list! The next available event was months away so, ever the planner, I decided to register for the April event at Summit Community Church (also Verrado High School) in Buckeye.

Since volunteering is always more fun with neighbors and friends, I snagged 40 spots for the April date and turned to The Front Porch Facebook group, our kids’ Navigators Club Chapter 182, and the Marley Park Community Cares Club for people to fill the spots.

Marley Park residents never disappoint when it comes to helping out the community, whether it

be Marley Park neighbors, residents of Surprise, or the global community of fellow humans. The latter is the beneficiary of FMSC, a Christian nonprofit organization that coordinates the packaging and distribution of food to people in developing nations. The organization relies on volunteers to assist in packing “manna packs” which are complete meals of rice, soy protein, vegetables, vitamins, and minerals.

And so, nearly 40 of us (a few had to cancel last minute) came, sang, and packed for two hours straight, completing eleven boxes of 36 manna packs which will feed 2,376 meals to the hungry. Our group was a mix of children, teens, and adults, but we all worked together beautifully and made quick work of filling and sealing the bags and packing them into boxes for their long journeys overseas. We really did sing, as there was loud, lively music playing the whole time, which tends to make time fly!

Volunteering and giving back to the community is an important value that my husband and I try to instill in our children. I’m grateful to live in a community that supports this effort in a way that is rewarding and fun. We are looking forward to participating at the FMSC event at Summit Community Church annually and would love to have you join us. The benefits of a qualified retirement plan can be distributed through a revocable Trust, over time, as long as certain precautions are taken.
