May is one of my favorite months! It’s a happy month! The trees and flowers are blooming!

Summer is coming! It’s pool weather! The first week of May is Teacher Appreciation Week, so be sure to recognize the amazing teachers in your life and the lives of your children this week, and check out the article about the impact of teachers in the pages that follow. May also bring us Mother’s Day, a day to celebrate our mothers and our motherhood, whether it be biological, legally adopted, or just those all-important mother-figures in our lives that serve to keep us grounded and make us whole. We’ve included an article about the history of Mother’s Day, as well, written by another one of our volunteer contributors.

On a more somber note, May is also the month we celebrate Memorial Day. Often confused with Veterans Day, Memorial Day is a day to remember those who have died in battle or from wounds sustained in battle. While Veterans Day does honor veterans who have died, it is largely intended to thank living veterans for their service. Memorial Day, on the other hand, is intended to remember and pay tribute to those who have paid the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom. For many, Memorial Day is a day off work and school; a three-day weekend that kicks of summer, often with outdoor fun and BBQs. Be sure to take a few moments this year to remember the reason we have the freedom to celebrate.

If you’re looking for something meaningful to do this Memorial Day, consider travelling to downtown Phoenix for the Pioneers’ Cemetery Association 34th annual Memorial Day observance from 1012pm at the Pioneer and Military Memorial Park (1317 W Jefferson St). Representatives from historic organizations will be speaking, and several reenactment groups will be present. This is a great opportunity to show our children what Memorial Day is all about… and you can still be home in time to throw some dogs on the grill and enjoy the afternoon at the pool!

If you’re not up for the drive to Phoenix, you can stop by Marley Park’s very own Veterans Commemorative Plaza, located right in front of the Heritage Pool House. Many of our neighbors and community members have purchased engraved pavers for the VCP to honor veterans, both living and dead. If you have a paver there, take a moment to visit and reflect on your way to the pool. If not, consider purchasing one as a legacy for your family in honor of a specific person or in appreciation of all our American veterans. In the words of Joseph Campbell, “A hero is someone who has given his or her life to something bigger than oneself.”

Boy Scout Troop 862 Flag Fundraiser I am sure you have all seen the flags proudly displayed along many streets in Marley Park during Memorial Day and the 4th of July. What many of you may not realize is that this is a program that the Boy Scouts provide for our residents. It also serves as a fundraiser that allows the young men aged 16-18 to experience a high adventure trip each summer, and the ability to purchase equipment for their campouts throughout the year.

In Marley Park that honor belongs to Troop 862. For $40 per year the troop will place the PVC pipe in your desired location on your property and raise and lower the flag for you. The flags are posted in the buried PVC pipe, (which gets capped off unless a flag is inserted) at sunrise on each holiday and lowered at sunset.

The scouts deliver the flags six times a year, on Martin Luther King Day, Memorial Day, Labor Day, Presidents Day, 4th of July and Veterans Day and store them for you during the rest of the year.

The America I Believe In America is a country where the power is given to the people. This country, where dreams that are sky high can become real within what seems like a moment. Our country, where opportunities can happen anywhere. In America, we have the freedom to choose. Choices are given to us and we can follow the path we feel is important. The America I believe in is the one where every person has equal chances to overcome the obstacles and where each one of our futures is important.

We can build a better life for ourselves”. Everyone, everywhere faces challenges, but in America, the people have the chance to overcome the obstacles and make a greater life.

In our country, each and every person’s future is important, from the smallest child to the eldest man, every life matters. America is a country to be proud of. Book Review Book Review- In The Time of the Butterflies by Julia Alvarez Overflowing with passion and verve, ‘In the Time of the Butterflies’ by Julia Alvarez is a stunning tribute to the power of bravery.

The story is set in the Dominican Republic during Rafael Trujillo’s tyrannical regime, and documents the lives of the four young Mirabal sisters, from their political triumphs to their emotional downfalls to their eventual haunting deaths. The historical accuracy of the novel adds a layer of depth, prompting research of the story after the novel has been completed. Readers will find themselves wrapped up in the struggles of the heroines as the story unfolds, providing consuming content until the very end.

Minerva Mirabal, the most daring and resolute of the sisters, throws herself into the revolutionary wave immediately. The other girls join the movement gradually, as they each witness lifechanging events. Together, their fortitude and resolve form a seemingly insurmountable force, inspiring readers to stand up to the ordinary injustices all around them.

Alvarez writes exquisitely, using descriptive language to place the reader into the horrifying world of the dictatorship: “As the road darkened, the beams of our headlights filled with hundreds of blinded moths. Where they hit the windshield, they left blurry marks, until it seemed like I was looking at the world through a curtain of tears.”

Images of moths and butterflies are utilized throughout the novel to symbolize the different types of people in the revolution. The Mirabal sisters are portrayed as elegant butterflies, gracefully escaping the confines of their figurative cocoons. The men in the story, however, can be compared to moths: feeble and fragile and not at all ready to stand up to the evils in the world. In this way, women take the lead in the novel. They kindly forgive those who are too scared to join the movement, yet forge the way for the courageous ones who do.

Alvarez ultimately weaves the perfect tale: one of determination and sacrifice, with undertones of familial love and the power of femininity.

This story is sure to satisfy anyone with a hunger for inspiration and beautiful, raw revolution.

An Apple A Day May is Teacher Appreciation Month I can remember all the teachers in my life that have made a difference, going back to Kindergarten!

I still remember her… Lidia, my Kindergarten teacher. She was a short lady, with black hair, dark eyes, a strong personality, and an infinite love for teaching. She was my very first school experience and I believe she played a pivotal part in how much I have loved learning ever since.

Marta, Xiomara, Mirta and Virginia are some of the teachers that followed. All with a particular style of teaching but the same love to pass on their knowledge to younger generations.

Today, I am a Mother. My boys attend Marley Park Elementary School and I feel so blessed for their teacher, Ms. Megan Jones. She reminds me of all those excellent teachers I had while growing up. If you did not appreciate your teachers in your school years, once you become a parent, you understand their importance even more.

You see, a teacher can have a profound effect on one’s life. They not only teach math, language, science, art, social studies, and many other subjects; they also teach children to love learning.

They teach discipline and social skills. They teach team play and cooperation. They teach organization. They teach fun and singing and laughter. A teacher can be a child’s parent away from home. Some children spend more time at school than they do in their own home.

Teachers can teach you to love others, to show concern, to respect each other. Great teachers are a blessing in a child’s life. After all, “It takes a big heart, to help shape little minds.”

<3 Mom Happy Mother’s Day The earliest history of Mother’s day goes back to the ancient Greeks where they dedicated a spring festival to maternal goddesses. The ancient Romans had a similar festival. In early Christian religion, the 4th Sunday of Lent was set aside to honor Mary the mother of Jesus. In England, the holiday was extended to honor all mothers. This was called Mothering Sunday. This custom died out almost completely by the 19th century, however it was revived after WWII. Julia Ward Howe. most famous for writing the Battle Hymn of the Republic, is credited for first introducing the idea of Mother’s Day in the US in 1872. Howe envisioned the day as a day of peace, an antiwar movement, and an opportunity to honor and support women who lost loved ones in the Civil War. He dedicated the celebration with a focus on ending war and organized festivities in Boston for years. Mother’s Day became a national holiday in the early 1900s, when Ana Jarvis continued the work started by Howe. She was inspired by her own mother who had worked alongside Howe. Ana passed out carnations in her church and organized supporters to lobby for the official declaration of a Mother’s Day holiday. The white carnation was

the favorite flower of Anna Jarvis mother and was the official flower of Mother’s Day. May 9, 1914 President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed the second Sunday in May as Mother’s Day, “as a public expression of love and reverence for the mothers of our country.”

Originally, celebrations were observed mostly by churches but, the concept quickly spread. There is controversy about the over-commercialized version of Mother’s Day as that was not the intent of the original founders. In fact, Jarvis spent his every penny fighting against what Mother’s Day had become. A 1944 Newsweek article reported she had as many as 33 simultaneously pending Mother’s Day lawsuits. By the way did you know Ana Jarvis never had any children of her own?

Today Mother’s Day is celebrated in almost every country and is hugely popular. Most countries celebrate in similar ways including gifts, family time, and fun activities. In the US alone Mother’s Day spending will top well over 20 billion dollars.

The national restaurant Association reports it as the most popular holiday of the entire year to dine out.

There are a million ways to celebrate mom…. all just as unique as each mom. At the end of the day, what matters most is our time together and the love we share! Wishing each of you an incredibly special and blessed day.

Use Your Voice Marley Park was created over a decade ago with the intent to recreate what has been lost in modern America: small town life. The vision was for Marley Park to be a strong, active, caring community of neighbors who come together to share their time and talents to create traditions, foster community pride, and insure that the core values of the community (such as connection, safety, and respect) are upheld. This vision (along with some very specific design requirements intended to promote that vision on an aesthetic and functional level) were laid out in the Marley Park Planned Area Development (PAD) documents which were later approved by the city of Surprise.

At a meeting last February 27th Christopher Todd Properties presented residents with the plan for the “Cottages at Marley Park,” a rental complex consisting of 174 single-story units enclosed behind a 6-foot high wall with gated access.

We need residents to become actively involved in the effort to protect the vision and future of Marley Park NOW! Formal plans were submitted to the city of Surprise for approval by Christopher Todd Properties on April 1st.

It was clear that the unique Marley Park vision, or the Marley Park PAD that ensures that vision on a design level, were not considered in the design.

In the last few months the Committee has talked to city planners, consulted with land use attorneys, examined the Marley Park PAD in detail (all 411 pages) and noted areas where the proposed complex does not adhere to the design requirements. We have held community meetings to keep residents informed, and met with city leaders to express resident concerns (and provided contact info and sample letters to help residents do so as well).

Tech Tips Backing Up Photos We all know we should backup our important files, especially photos, but often do not have time to do it. Some people store photos on their phone, computer hard drive, cloud storage or an external hard drive. What should you back up and how often? That all depends on what you are willing to lose. How badly can you do without photos of your kids, parents, weddings, birthdays and other important life events? When helping people, photos is usually the first concern since once they are lost there is usually no way to replace them.

One simple way to backup photos is to use an external hard drive or a USB drive. They are inexpensive, very portable, and take up very little room. Many of these hard drives come with backup software that you can set up to periodically run fullor partial-backups as well as just manually back up. If you have a lot of photos you may want to consider a 2 TB drive.

Another great option is saving your photos to the cloud. There are many options to choose from, including Carbonite, Dropbox, Google Drive and OneDrive. Photos can be saved directly from your phone using iCloud (Apple only), Google or Amazon.

Google photos is great and easy to use. It allows you to save unlimited photos (up to 16MP) and videos (up to 1080p). You can edit photos, create collages, and share to Facebook. If you already use Gmail then this may be the right choice for you since the size reduction looks almost as good as the

original. Amazon Prime photos also has unlimited photo storage (5GB for videos) but you must be a Prime member ($99/yr which also gets you 2-day shipping, Amazon Video and Amazon Music). Some good features include grouping by people, family vault (keeping all family photos together and sharing with 5 people), the ability to order prints, and easy search. iCloud works great with Apple devices but limits you to 5 GB unless you are willing to pay for extra storage. If you use Apple products such as Mac, iPhone, iPad, Apple TV, they all work seamlessly together. In the end, there are many ways to back up your photos. I recommend using more than one way to backup photos so you know you will always have them. Donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t wait until it is too late to do this! It is time well spent to hold onto a lifetime of memories.

HOME SWEET HOME What Is Your Home Worth?

In recent conversations with clients, I’ve been asked several times about the statistic of price per square foot. While it can be useful when considering the many other important factors that play into a home’s value, homeowners are all too often tempted to use this number to over-simplify the value of their home.

Homes sold in Marley Park between 1/1/17 and 4/14/17, averaged $122 per square foot, yet the overall numbers ranged from $89 on the low end to $156 on the high end…a huge spread! You can see from this broad range that figuring out the value of your home in the current market is not as simple as just multiplying the average by the square footage of your property. In fact, when making the mistake of using price per square foot to determine value, most people don’t use the average…often, they use a number on the higher end. After all, why not be optimistic?

I’m all for optimism and looking for the positive in life, but when it comes to figuring out the value of a home in today’s fast-changing real estate market, the “real” in real estate needs to be taken seriously!

Some of the most important factors to consider when determining the current value of a property include location, lot size, landscaping, age of the home, quality of finishes and upgrades, condition of the home, number of garage stalls, single- or two-

story, and outdoor features such as pool, fire pit or outdoor kitchen. Size is also a consideration, and it’s important to note that the larger the home, the lower the price per square foot will be.

So then, you might be asking, why is price per square foot even calculated? Well, the statistic is most useful in tracking trends in a particular area and in determining broad value comparisons between different neighborhoods. For example, the current average price per square foot in Marley Park is $122, but the average for Marley Park in 2013 was just $90. The 35% increase over the past three years is a clear indication of strong market appreciation! Additionally, the current average for Surprise Farms, for example, is $107 per square foot, demonstrating that values in Marley Park are 14% higher in comparison.

Ultimately, the best way to get an accurate idea of a home’s worth is to have a real estate agent do a Comparative Market Analysis (CMA). In a CMA the value of a home is determined by looking only at recently sold homes of similar style, type, size, finishes, lot size, and location. Flush Wisely

Ever wondered what kinds of products get flushed down the toilet? From kitchen sinks and bathroom toilets, pipes can get clogged with items that are not dissolvable in water. This clog can be costly if it occurs between the sewer line under your home to the city sewer line in the street. Remember to flush only the 3 P’s: Paper (toilet paper, that is), Pee and Poop.

Sewage is used water and waste discharged by a community’s residents and businesses. It is collected from the drains of sinks, showers, toilets, and laundry facilities and flows into sewer lines or collection systems. From there, sewage is then transported to a treatment facility, also known as a water reclamation facility. Reclamation means to return something to its former, better state.

Consumers buy “flushable wipes” because they are convenient, but give little thought to how they should be disposed of. Products are packaged with the words “bio-degradable,” but, unlike toilet paper or tissue which is readily dispersible and dissolves quickly into the waste stream, most of these items do not readily “disperse” upon flushing and actually remain in a solid state traveling through the sewer system.

Some of the challenges our local wastewater employees encounter are out of control problems with debris like hair and flushable wipes, condoms and tampons. Additionally, fats, oil, and grease are often the reason these clogs occur in the sewer pipes and pump stations. These blockages cause an increase in operations and maintenance costs for all customers. This can also cause sewer backups or overflows.

Untangling sewer pumps, mixers, and valves from the tightly wound-up mess of wipes and rags is a dirty and dangerous task.

Our Operations and Maintenance staff are entering dangerous confined spaces and tearing apart pumps to remove balls of hair, wipes, and rags that contain disease and hazards such as hypodermic The Front Porch

needles. Please do not flush: Baby Wipes and Diapers Facial Tissues Cotton Swabs and Dental Floss Food Wrappers Syringes Cleaning Sponges and Disposable Toilet Brushes Cat Litter or Aquarium Gravel Feminine Hygiene Products or Contraceptives Fats, Oil, and Grease from Cooking Any items that do not dissolve after 60 minutes in a bowl of water should not be flushed down a toilet or disposed of at a sink. Throw these types of items into a trash container to keep the lines flowing and the pipes clear. Remember, no matter what the product package says, only three things are truly flushable: human waste, toilet paper and water.
