Welcome!

to your April edition.

The first quarter of 2017 has come and gone! One of my favorite things about living in Arizona is how we seamlessly transition from fall to spring while completely skipping over winter. After sixteen years here, I still don’t miss the frigid Michigan winters of my childhood. This time of year, as the weather warms up and the trees turn green with fresh, new leaves, I have a little extra spring in my step on my daily walks with the kids to and from school.

A few weeks ago, on one of those walks, my sixyear-old son exclaimed excitedly, “Mommy, come here! I want to show you something really pretty!”

It was a small patch of dandelions in the middle of the expansive grass of Heritage Park. Some were still bright yellow flowers, but many had “gone to seed,” a phrase we often hear used with a negative connotation. My son, however, thought the fluffy seeds of the dandelions were just amazing, and he immediately started blowing them off their stems and making wishes. Who doesn’t have childhood memories of dandelion seeds flying through the air with secret wishes attached?

As adults, these memories are often tucked away in the recesses of our minds, crowded down by the stress and busy-ness of work, home, and financial responsibilities. This month, I encourage you to set aside your stress and thoughts of grown-up obligations. Take a walk through one

of our beautiful parks and stop to notice the new leaves sprouting from the trees, the blooming of the beautiful desert flowers and, yes, the fluffy dandelions that are the perfect opportunity for you to pause and make a wish.

This time of year is also perfect for reflecting on our plans and goals for the months ahead. Although the first three months of 2017 have flown by, we still have three-quarters of the year left to shape into whatever we want it to be! Like the dandelion seeds being blown from their stems, let go of any negative thoughts or regrets that might be weighing you down and focus on the new opportunities that lie ahead. When you think something has “gone to seed,” it may just take a change in perspective to realize that each seed is a new opportunity to plant something positive in your life. In the words of Michael Altshuler, “The bad news is time flies. The good news is you’re the pilot.”

On Our Cover Marley Park Elementary School’s Boys’ Basketball Team won the district championship on Wednesday, March 8th!

importance of one over the other. Dominating possession of the ball, and making great passes is what gave us an edge in our games.

It was truly an amazing game to watch, with an impressive season as well. Finishing undefeated under the direction of Coach Michael Spanos, the boys triumphantly cheered as they were presented the district trophy. As the assistant coach, it was great to watch the team bond together to form a family.

I am so proud to work with such talented and amazing students, and truly proud of their hard work and dedication to the game. At the start of the season, Coach Spanos and I knew there was something magical about our team. Knowing it was Principal Dana Kaye’s last year at Marley, we really wanted to make sure we left behind a legacy toremember, and we believe that the boys’ basketball team at Marley Park succeeded in doing just that.

Our boys had great offense and defense, which really is key to our success. We tried to create a balance for both, not expressing the

Final 4 Events Arizona has quite the resume when it comes to hosting big time sporting events. Arizona has hosted three Super Bowls, many college football championships, professional all-star games, an NBA Finals and a World Series. The only glaring omission from Arizona’s sports resume is the NCAA Final Four. However, come April, Arizona will once again be the focus of the sports world, and you can join in on the fun.

On April 1st and 3rd, The NCAA basketball tournament will culminate at the University Of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale. This is the tournament that makes everyone a college basketball fan for a month by filling out a bracket at work and often leaves you wondering where the heck Duquesne University, or Hampton University are located (go ahead step away and Google those colleges and learn something new today). The same tournament that Peggy from accounting wins by picking teams based on the cutest colors or fiercest mascots. Yes, that tournament is coming here.

Bowl. Interactive experiences, games, clinics, and autograph signings make up the event. Admission for the event is $8 for adults, and free for children under 12.

These are just a few of the many events that will be held during the Final Four. There is something for everyone in the family. Going to one of these events will help you enjoy the NCAA College Basketball Tournament. However, I don’t know if it will take away the sting and embarrassment of losing to Peggy in accounting.

Even if you are not planning on attending the games, there are still many events that you can enjoy during the Final Four. This Final Four will be the first Final Four hosted west of Texas since 1995, when it was in Seattle, so there will be many festivities for visitors to enjoy. If you are more into music than basketball, the March Madness Music Festival will be the event for you. The festival runs from March 31-April 2 in Downtown Phoenix.

The event will be held at Margaret T. Hance Park, located just north of Phoenix Convention Center and will feature music and food with free admission. The lineup for the concert has not been announced yet, but in the past performers have included Fergie, Bruce Springsteen, and Rihanna.

The Final Four Fan Fest will be taking place in the Phoenix Convention Center March 31st –April 3. The fan fest is a family oriented event that is similar to the NFL Experience that was here during the Super

Use Your Voice While enjoying a Sunday afternoon with family in late February, I couldn’t help but notice three messages that came in like rapid-fire less than ten minutes apart. “Have you heard about the rental properties coming to Marley Park?!?”

News had just gotten out about a meeting scheduled for the following evening by the developer of the proposed rental complex. Despite such short notice, a strong social media and email campaign to spread the word about the meeting resulted in some estimated 200-plus residents showing up to voice their opposition to the project.

Since then, I have been contacted nearly every day by residents concerned about the impact the development will have on our community and their home values. As a Marley Park resident, I share those concerns.

We’ve all driven past Parcel 10 (13 acres off Old Oak Lane adjacent to the elementary school). The looming commercial real estate signs have faded over the years and the overgrown weeds have become a comfortable home for our urban wildlife.

In 2006 DMB Associates, Inc., the developer of Marley Park, sold Parcel 10 to Frank Residential with a plan to build 157 owner-occupied attached homes featuring direct access garages, walkways connecting neighborhoods, and a streetscape that complemented the surrounding community. Then came the economic downturn and construction never started.

Parcel 10 was sold in 2013 to the Winifred L.

Stevens Foundation with plans to build a Montessori school, but not long after the initial plans were submitted, Rev. Stevens passed away. The family foundation that inherited the property put it up for sale. Nearly four years later, Parcel 10 is now in escrow. A developer is planning to build 174 singlestory rental units surrounded by a wall. There will be parking lots and a swimming pool, and one tiny green space. Inside the wall, maintenance standards would be left to the sole discretion of the property management company. There would be one gated entrance off Old Oak Lane and one emergency access on the same street.

In my opinion, the proposed project is not compatible with the Marley Park community and the vision upon which it was built. However, because the property is currently zoned for multi-family residential, it won’t be easy to stop. Nevertheless, a committee of concerned residents has been formed to coordinate an effort to oppose it. Marley Park Yard Sales South Sudan into Uganda every day. We have so much to be grateful for.

At every sale I chatted and learned new things about my neighbors. Some conversations moved me to tears, and others left me wondering and yearning for more knowledge. Did you know that many of our youth are involved in the city of Surprise basketball programs? You can thin Nutella with warm milk? Onesies and disposable diapers were not the norm 50 years ago? Thin mints are the bestselling Girl Scout cookie?

While yard sales are a great way to purge our homes of unwanted items and find new treasures at a great price, the Marley Park yard sale day was about so much more. I was out and about early and decided to get some exercise in, as well as shopping. I met the friendliest people on our streets, got to pet some amazing fur babies, and was issued more well wishes than I received all week. This of course made my heart happy, my face smile, and I am certain my endorphins rise…you know those feel-great hormones!

My first purchase was homemade crepes made right in front of me with organic eggs and fresh fruit.

Coffee and conversation were included at no extra charge. My purchases that morning were diverse and included baby clothes, cookies, antiques, and candles. I supported a foster mom, a church youth group, girl scouts, and, most interestingly, a goat farm in Uganda. Did you know one of our neighbors funds a school in Uganda and is happy to accept our donations to share with the children there? I learned that on average, about 2,500 refugees — mostly women and children — are crossing from

After just two short hours I returned home feeling energized and completely in love with my neighbors and community. It is good to converse.

Conversation builds community; it leads to our health, happiness and longevity. It gives stories and value to those we live beside. This morning it reminded me to be grateful, humble, and kind.

I know conversation is not easy or natural for everyone. I found a few guidelines that might be helpful; ask questions, allow for equal participation in the chat, don’t complain too much, and be an easy laugher. The goal of conversation is to connect. It is an easy way to let our neighbors know we care for them, respect them, and support them.

Connection builds community. And remember, the more you practice, the easier it gets!

National Sibling Day April 10th is National Sibling Day. The holiday was originally conceived by Claudia Evart to honor the memory of her brother and sister, both of whom died at early ages. It is not a recognized holiday but her organization is working to change that.

Of course, honoring our siblings should not be a “one day during the year” thing. We should show them love every day. So why are siblings so important? I have an older brother. He is 14 years older than me so, in our case, there is an entire generation between us. Nevertheless, we have always been incredibly close and he is without a doubt, one of the people in my life I love the most.

Although I feel so blessed to have my big brother, I think I really understand the power of a sibling now that I am a Parent. Aidan and Dylan arrived in my life 4 years ago, one whole minute apart from each other. They are my greatest blessing, but I am also convinced that they are each other’s greatest blessing. I can only imagine what it’s like to literally become a person with your sibling right next to you… sharing that tight space in a mother’s somb. As babies, my boys were independent from each other. It is now that they are older that I get to experience every day, their amazing connection.

It must be so wonderful to be born with your best friend. I truly believe, although they are individuals, they are two parts of a whole.

So again, why are siblings important?

I love this quote I found which pretty much sums it up: “From the time they are born, our brothers and sisters are our collaborators and co-conspirators, our role models and cautionary tales. They are our scolds, protectors, goads, tormentors, playmates, counselors, sources of envy, objects of pride. They teach us how to resolve conflicts and how not to; how to conduct friendships and when to walk away from them. Sisters teach brothers about the mysteries of girls; brothers teach sisters about the puzzle of boys. Our spouses arrive comparatively late in our lives; our parents eventually leave us.

In conclusion, the importance of siblings in our lives as adults, and our children’s lives once we become parents, is truly immeasurable. Let’s love them, let’s honor them, and let’s let them know how much they signify in our lives… not only during this month of April, but every single day. Cheers to Siblings!!!

Pardon Our Dust Play One of the features that attracts people to the Marley Park community is the unique park system that is spread throughout our community. These parks are not only aesthetically pleasing, but they also encourage our children to get outside and play, explore, and meet new friends. They are also an essential gathering place for neighbors to get together and meet for play dates, coffee, or just friendly conversation.

Portico Park is the newest addition to the Marley Park network of parks and is now open in the new Ashton Woods development! This park is one of several to be unveiled in the new community and it does not disappoint.

The park is located on the corner of Charter Oak and 144th Dr. It can be quickly accessed from Cactus at 145th Dr, just across from the Copper Canyon Ranch entrance gates. There are several features that make it a one of a kind place to visit.

One of the first things you’ll notice when arriving at the park is the large grassy area that is perfect for playing frisbee, doing cartwheels or practicing sports such as baseball, football, or soccer. At the front of the park you will find a modern-style playground area that is toddler sized and includes a small tunnel, a bridge, and a pint-sized slide, just to name a few things. If your children aren’t quite that small then they might enjoy playing a game of ping pong instead at the custom concrete ping pong table that features the Marley Park logo on the one

of a kind iron table net. Spread around the park you can find a few things for the adults to enjoy such as a wood burning fire pit with a generous seating area, a built-in bar complete with charcoal grill, and an isolated picnic table for those who prefer a more relaxing park experience.

If you haven’t ventured over to the newer part of Marley Park, then now might be a good time. Head on over and see what you might be missing; there are several families that are eager to meet you and find out why you call Marley Park home.

HOME SWEET HOME

Buying a home is the single largest purchase most people will ever make, so it makes sense for homeowners to keep an eye on the local real estate market and the current value of their home.

Determining the value of your home isn’t as easy as just looking at sale prices of other homes in your neighborhood. Of course, comparable homes should contain similar finishes and upgrades, but there are other factors as well. Here are a few things a real estate agent will take into consideration when evaluating your home’s worth:

• The type of home – is it a single-family home with a full backyard or a courtyard home, townhouse, or low maintenance home on a small lot with a smaller side yard or courtyard? Pricing will be different for a single-family home than for a small lot home with minimal or no backyard, so you must be sure to compare apples to apples.

• Location, location, location. Does the home have a desirable location (backing to or looking out on a park, close to schools or amenities, etc.) or are there negative factors (like proximity to a busy street or parking lot) that would adversely affect value?

• Room size and layout. If two homes have the same square footage, a four-bedroom home with tiny, bedrooms isn’t automatically worth more than a three bedroom home with spacious rooms. Room size matters! In terms of layout, open concept homes better meet the needs of today’s more

casual style of living (and make a home seem larger). As more people move to working from home, home offices also add value.

• Age and condition. New construction homes command a premium, price wise (as much as 20% over a similar existing home in many areas), so new build homes won’t be factored in when determining the value of an existing home.

Condition is a key factor, too. A well-maintained home that requires no work at all is worth more than one with even minor issues.

• A pool. In general, a pool will add $10,00014,000 in value to a home in our area, depending on the size and type - but only if it’s well placed and in excellent condition. A pool that is in poor shape and needs repair can detract from the value of your home!

If you’d like to know what your home might be worth in the current market, even if you’re not planning to sell soon, contact a trusted real estate agent with local knowledge and expertise. A good agent will be happy to provide the info with the goal of earning your business long-term.

Last Minute Bunny Ears!

CRAFT CORNER

We all have that moment when we are looking for a way that our children can dress along with a holiday, which sometimes means coming up with something at the very last minute!

These bunny ears are fun and easy to make with items that you probably have laying around the house. After making these ears, the kiddos were jumping all over and pretending to be bunnies, they had so much fun hopping around.

To make these ears you will need colorful construction paper, two popsicle sticks per set of ears and any pieces that you may want to use to decorate. We used colorful pompoms and foamy sticker cut outs. If you do not have anything available, it’s also fun to use crayons and have the kiddos draw fun shapes of their own.

First, you fold the piece of construction paper and draw the outline of just one long bunny ear making sure there is some space at the bottom, with the folded piece meant to be the center of the band that will circle the child’s head.

You then cut the shape out, making sure that the center part remains intact. When you unfold the paper, you will see that you now have two ears and enough bottom space to decorate.

Use the remaining pieces to add length to both sides, enough to fit around the child’s head. Use

the other left over pieces to apply the center color piece of the ear.

We placed some popsicle sticks behind the ears to make sure they did not flop around. We had letter foam stickers, so each child was able to personalize their ears with their names.

The best part of making these ears is that anything goes, so have fun and watch your children go from holiday crafting to play acting for a long while.

Thoughts of God

Peace On Earth

The next time you go to the beach, perhaps this summer, take some time to imagine just how much God thinks about you. Look at the sand around you. Over 3000 years ago, King David, son of Jesse from the tribe of Judah, sat down and tried to describe how much God thinks about us. I can picture him now walking along the shore of the Mediterranean Sea, meditating on the Lord and penning these words found in Psalm 139:17-18a, “How precious are your thoughts about me, O’ God. They are innumerable. If I were to count them, they would outnumber the grains of sand!”

INNUMERABLE! Imagine God’s thoughts about you are more than the grains of sand. Let’s try to understand what David believed about God. Imagine going to the local home improvement store and purchasing a bag of sand. Start counting every single grain. Most likely you will give up within 10 minutes. I know, because I tried! It’s hard to count because the grains of sand are so small, some microscopically as small as .004 mm. Yet, no matter how small they may be, David understood the magnitude of God’s love towards him.

Back at the store, looking at all the sandbags, we can’t forget about all the other bags at other store.

Every store in Surprise, Maricopa County, Arizona, and throughout the country has sand! Bags and bags of sand! They are endless, just like God’s thoughts towards us.

Let’s not forget the playgrounds across the country, the deserts throughout the world, the sand up and down the Atlantic Coast, Pacific Coast, and along every island and coastline in the world. God’s thoughts about you are more than every single grain of sand. Amazing! But wait, there’s still more, the sand under the depths of the seas, they’re innumerable; God’s thoughts towards you and me are beyond comprehension.

David described even further writing in Psalm 139:18b, “Even when I wake up in the morning, you are still with me!” I keep thinking of the Sandman, for when I wake the goo or “sand” that is in my eye, could this be a reminder of God’s love towards me every morning? I’m not sure, but one thing I know God thinks an awful lot about us.

When someone thinks about you like that, there must be a great love for you.
