Welcome to your March edition of The Front Porch magazine! With St. Patrick’s Day coming up this month, I’m reminded of my favorite quote about luck. “I’m a great believer in luck. I find the harder I work, the more I have of it.” Although often incorrectly attributed to Thomas Jefferson, this quote was first published in 1922 by Coleman Cox. I think the sentiment can be applied to most things in life…and that includes Marley Park! This community is not amazing because we are all just lucky…it’s the hard work and effort of the residents who MAKE it amazing. From the simple act of picking up a piece of trash in the park to investing the time and effort it takes to establish a group or club, our neighborhood is a fantastic place to live because the people make it so. Speaking of clubs and groups, be sure to check out the “Clubs and Groups” page in this month’s issue for some great opportunities to meet neighbors. There are so many great resident-led activities going on in our neighborhood, there really is something for everyone! Since our community is
so attractive to people looking for a place to call home, it is growing and changing at an incredibly fast pace. If you haven’t ventured across Bullard lately, check it out when you get a chance. The new area of Marley Park is really starting to look like a neighborhood as more and more homes are completed, landscaping is filled in, and residents are out-and-about enjoying our beautiful parks. Of course, our amazing Arizona spring weather lends itself to getting outside, which makes for great opportunities to get to know some of our newer neighbors! We’ve also expanded our regular events page in this issue and, if you’re looking for even more things to do in and around the community, be sure to check the “events” tab in The Front Porch group on Facebook at TheFrontPorchGroup.com. There are events planned for the coming weeks all the way through December that you won’t want to miss! If you don’t see anything that interests you, but have an idea for an event, club, group, or even an article for this magazine, contact me and I’d love to help you make it happen! When we all work together to make Marley Park amazing, we will find ourselves feeling lucky to live here! Wishing you and yours a wonderful spring season! See you on The Front Porch!

On Our Cover Heather and Staci have lived in Marley Park since 2015. Having both grown up only children in closeknit communities, they were drawn to the strong family-oriented culture of the neighborhood. With five boys of their own, it seemed the right setting to raise a cohesive family unit. For Heather, she knew her life would be fulfilled whether or not she had kids, but for Staci not having kids was a deal breaker. With the help of friends who had gone through the process of fostering and adopting, they were able to take the first steps to growing a family of their own.
Staci and Heather urge those who are looking into adoption to do their homework. There are a number of agencies out there so it is crucial to find one that works best for you. They also stress how important it is to prepare interview questions to find out information that is most important for you, such as whether therapy would be a good option for the child. With five boys, some would wonder how they manage as working parents. Heather works with an anti-money laundering consultancy and Staci is an inmate classification specialist. They say their parents help a lot by getting the kids ready for school and watching them during the day. Their practice of always having dinner at the kitchen table allows for quality family time every night, while Saturdays are set aside as family days. Heather emphasizes the importance of having “routines and schedules so they know what to expect, especially
for the older foster kids”. Staci says that when the goings get rough, she reminds herself that it is important to know it won’t last forever. “As much as they are at each other’s throats,” Heather says “they are very caring towards one another”. Anthony, age 4, gives out “Anthony kisses” to his brothers every night. His older brother Isaac, age 5, is the performer of the family and has a sensitive side. Damion, 11 years old, plays the role of big brother. With the rest of his sibling being half his age, Heather describes him as helpful and kindhearted. His kindness is clear by the way he fetches toys to appease his younger brother’s fits. His love of basketball is also very apparent as he shows off his moves on the backyard patio. Staci says it’s fun to watch their personalities grow, especially the two “littles”, Aaden age 3 and Asher age 2. Aaden, the more docile of the two, sits closely between Heather and Staci while Asher, described as the smiley goofball, wanders around the room. The family has recently added another addition to the family, Marley the dog, or as the boys call him: Mar-mar. There are approximately 20,000 youths in the foster system currently. Unfortunately, homes are filled up so much so that kids are having to sleep in the agencies’ offices. Staci’s hope with sharing her story is for others to “realize adopting from a foster system is not a bad thing”. Despite their unique situation, Staci says that it “feels like how it’s supposed to be”. Through the challenges and struggles, their family values are, without a doubt, going to raise these boys to be wonderful young men with strong relationships with each other. That is what family is all about. Submitted by Olivia Quinata, Age 16 | Marley Park Resident

Home Sweet Home Having been a licensed REALTOR® for almost twelve years now, as well as an Accredited Staging Professional, the one question I’ve been asked most often throughout my career is “which home improvements add the most value to a home?”
If you ask most real estate or home improvement specialists this question, they’ll say “kitchens and bathrooms.” Well, this is true, but kitchen and bathroom improvements are also the most expensive. While they’ll certainly add value, you won’t always see an increase in actual PROFIT when it comes time to sell. It’s also easy to over-improve in these areas, which happens when the cost of the improvements is more than the increase in equity after completion. So, what CAN you do to increase the value of your home that will result in an actual return on investment? The answer, from my experience, is simple: install a tile backsplash in your kitchen. I have been in literally thousands of homes during my years as a real estate agent and I can tell you, without a doubt, that a tile kitchen backsplash will make even the drabbest kitchen look and feel like a high-end gourmet kitchen with an average investment of around $1,000.* Time after time, I’ve walked into a home with a client and found a basic kitchen with dated appliances, laminate counter tops, and low-end cabinets…but if there’s a tile backsplash, I usually hear comments like “Oh, I like the backsplash!” or even just “I love the kitchen!” Add a tile backsplash to an already
10 The Front Porch
beautiful kitchen, and you’ve gone from “nicely upgraded” to “AMAZING” in the span of 20-30 square feet. If a tile backsplash is something you’re considering because selling your home is the goal, you’ll definitely want to get some advice from someone who is “in the trenches” daily and can share what today’s buyers are looking for in homes. Look for a real estate professional who is also an Accredited Staging Professional and who will provide a free Staging Consultation with his/her services. Even if your goal is simply to improve and love your space more, my advice is to go for it! If you’re struggling with design decisions, I’d be happy to pop over and share my opinion. I can also recommend installers and sources for materials. Just reach out via email, Facebook, or an oldfashioned phone call and I’ll be happy to help! What can you do if you don’t have a budget of $1,000 to install a backspash? Well then, clean! Nothing…I mean NOTHING sells a home better than cleanliness, and all it will cost you is a little elbow grease! *https://www.homeadvisor.com/cost/kitchens/tilebacksplash-install/ Submitted by Christie Giannetto | REALTOR® | Arizona Lifestyle Team | HomeSmart

St. Patrick’s Day My Irish roots can be traced coming to American shores in the early 1800’s, when a fair haired opportunistic lad in his 20’s (my great-great-great grandfather McEnnis) ventured here from Wexford, Ireland. I can claim that some of what makes me who I am likely came from my Irish roots; undertones of red in my hair, my unwavering Catholic faith, the fact that in my pantry may hide a stash of Irish Tea, and perhaps a bottle of Whiskey. From traditional to fun folklore, here are some ways my family takes note of the occasion. It is said to wear green, and you won’t get pinched. As for my family, I make certain no one leaves the house without wearing at least a touch of the color on St. Patrick’s Day. The tradition of pinching people who don’t wear green on St. Patrick’s Day is supposed to be a reminder that, at any time, a leprechaun could appear and wreak havoc on you! If you smell a stench of boiled cabbage coming from our Marley Park home, yes, we are likely cooking corned beef and cabbage stew! Potatoes, vegetable broth, corned beef and cabbage is all you need in your Crock Pot for this classic IrishAmerican meal. It is a tasty meal to feed the masses (or just my family of 4), and something I remember from my childhood. My kids like it too, minus the ‘stinky cabbage’.
12 The Front Porch
One day you might hear an Irish jig playing from our front porch --as one of my young daughters has just taken up learning the fiddle (violin). Who knows if ‘Irish fiddling’ will be in her future repertoire, taking after her professional Irish fiddler Aunt. Until then, we will listen to Irish music on our home entertainment system, or venture to our local favorite Irish pub (The Irish Wolfhound) to catch a local band playing covers of The Pogues, The Dubliners, Cranberries or U2. One of my favorite Irish blessings is one I would truly hope for all my neighbors and friends; ‘May your troubles be less and your blessings be more, and nothing but happiness come through your door’. Traditional Irish blessings are about welcoming, warmth and turning a negative situation into a positive one. In past occasions, for pure fun, I have added green food coloring into the kids dinner milk, so we can all raise a green colored beverage, share our blessings and give a verbal toast of ‘cheers’ or ‘slainte’ (Gaelic translation: ‘to your health’). So, Irish or not, I certainly hope you celebrate -Slainte and Happy St. Patrick’s Day! Submitted by Ingrid Melle | Marley Park Resident

Neighborhood Watch
Lead by Marley Park resident Sherrill Eads, the newly rejuvenated neighborhood watch group held its first neighborhood watch community meeting on February 1st at the heritage club. Speaker Chris Tovar, community relations officer with the surprise police department, provided important information on the current state of crime and law enforcement in surprise, crime prevention tips and the importance of neighborhood watch in keeping a community safe.
According to Officer Tovar the biggest danger to a community’s safety isn’t gangs, thieves, drug dealers, etc. But apathy! Criminals don’t want to be seen or heard; if they know we are watching out for each other, they will go elsewhere. Therefore, the cornerstone of neighborhood watch is awareness. Residents should strive to be aware of what is “normal” for their neighborhood: who their neighbors are, where they live, what vehicles they drive and what their normal routines are. Once you are aware of what is normal for your neighborhood, take the time to really look whenever you are out and about and to always be aware of your surroundings. We are lucky since Marley Park was designed for neighbor interaction with front porches and parks everywhere! That design makes it easier to be aware of the behavior and activities of non-residents when they are in your neighborhood. Listen to your instincts and don’t be afraid to report suspicious vehicles or
The Front Porch
individuals to the surprise PD non-emergency number (at 623/222-4000).
Reporting suspicious individuals or vehicles to the PD makes it possible for the surprise PD to observe trends and brief officers/assign patrols as needed. When making your report, please provide as much detail as possible. (consider writing down the details of what you have observed while you are observing or right after while it is fresh in your mind before you call.) Details to include: For an event include what happened, when it happened, where it happened (take note of the nearest cross street, home address or landmark), if weapons are involved, possible injuries, involved parties and why you think it was suspicious. For vehicles include color and license plate (state and number) and, if possible, year, make and model, body type, details (bumper stickers, damage, etc), and direction of travel. For individuals try to note the color of eyes, skin, and/or hair) as well as age, gender, ethnicity, body type, attire, looks (length of hair, tattoos, glasses, facial hair, etc.). For more information on the neighborhood watch for Marley Park program or to join the mailing list send an email (including the name of your neighborhood park) to mpneighbrsblockwatch@ gmail.com.
