Welcome to your January edition! And welcome to 2019! We want to make this the best year yet for The Front Porch magazine and that means we need YOUR help! Our goal has always been for The Front Porch to be FOR neighbors and BY neighbors. If you have an original recipe, a fun photo of your pet, original artwork, a fine art photography piece, or a photo showcasing your interior (or exterior) design talents, please submit it to me at Christie@AZLifestyleTeam.com and it may be printed in a future issue! This year we would also like to highlight and acknowledge major milestones and achievements of our neighbors. If you’re celebrating a milestone anniversary this year or if you or a family member has earned an award, a degree, or accomplished something great at school or work, get in touch and let’s share it with the world…or at least with Marley Park! Additional submissions

for community events, club/group meetings, and new baby announcements are welcome as well. We are also accepting article submissions on a variety of topics so please reach out if you have something to contribute. Writers can be any age, including kids…check out this month’s article about the 2019 #KindnessMatters movement by 14-year-old Marley Park resident, Olivia Black. Olivia will be assigning us a kindness task every month this year so please consider participating and doing your small part to make our big world better. (See The Front Porch Group on Facebook at TheFrontPorchGroup.com for more information.) It has been a pleasure to bring you The Front Porch Magazine every month for over two years now. I hope you have enjoyed receiving it as much as we have enjoyed bringing it to you. Of course, the magazine wouldn’t be possible without the contributions of neighbors as well as our business advertisers. If you need something for your home or business this year, please look to the Business Directory in the back of the magazine first. By supporting our advertisers, we can keep The Front Porch magazine coming to your mailbox for free every month for many years to come. As you develop your resolutions for the new year, consider putting kindness at the top of the list. After all, in the words of Harold Kushner, “When you are kind to others, it not only changes you, it changes the world.” See you on The Front Porch!

On Our Cover

Whenever I add a neighbor to The Front Porch group on Facebook, I also send them a Facebook friend request. Not everyone accepts as, understandably, some don’t accept friend requests from people they haven’t yet met in person. Most people do accept though…and those online connections have led to countless real-life, in-person connections over the years. For that, I am eternally grateful.

One of those connections came about recently from a coffee date with my back-yard, kitty-corner neighbor. Although the corner of her backyard literally touches the corner of mine, I hadn’t yet had the opportunity to meet Chioma Arinze in person. We had been Facebook friends for some time though, and I was intrigued by her frequent posts of herself with friends and relatives wearing what seemed to me the most beautiful, exotic, and unique dresses I had ever seen. Curious, I reached out to Chioma and invited her to meet me for coffee. From our conversation, which lasted almost two hours, I learned that Chioma and her husband,

Maxwell, are both originally from Nigeria, although they met in the U.S. Chioma immigrated here when she was just 21 years old, the only one of her seven siblings to leave Nigeria. She met her husband through a friend of her brother’s who was also living in the US and they married just six months later. They have two children and will be celebrating their 23rd anniversary this year! Chioma is a nurse and Maxwell is an airline pilot. Maxwell’s job takes him back to Nigeria regularly where he often purchases the beautiful dresses that caught my eye in Chioma’s Facebook posts. Chioma shared with me that the dresses are custom made by a tailor there and that she designs many of them herself. They often include headwear which is traditionally worn to church and for special occasions by people in the Nigerian culture. This month’s cover photo was taken by Carson Cavaletto, Marley Park resident and volunteer photographer for The Front Porch Magazine. It features Chioma wearing a traditional Nigerian dress and headwear, just before heading to a friend’s wedding. (Isn’t she gorgeous?!?) Chioma and Maxwell chose to raise their family in Marley Park because it reminds them of North Carolina, where they were living when they first met. They are both naturalized American citizens and are proud to call Marley Park their home. Submitted by Christie Giannetto | Marley Park Resident

Kindness Matters Kindness is like snow; it beautifies everything it covers. Even though we don’t see very much snow here in the heart of Arizona, we can still see the beauty that kindness has shown our neighborhood. I have heard of all kinds of amazing deeds that people are doing, without being asked, just out of the goodness of their hearts.

Most days we make up excuses, as humans do, to not go out of our way to make someone’s day, or we say that we are not old enough or young enough to this act of kindness or that one. This is not true. Every single person can be involved in this kindness revolution. We’re officially starting a Marley Park Kindness Movement. The people surrounding us are awesome people and I want to see what happens when we get them together to do a kindness project each month. This way, we can get everyone of all ages involved in the movement to make our tiny part of the world better. Starting in January, there will be a kindness activity for everyone to complete throughout the

month. You could do this task just once, every week, or even every day. If all the people in our neighborhood got together and did this activity just once, the effects could be monumental. Think of how many people we could help or how many lives we could change! If we all participate, the change will be easy. This month I want to challenge each of you to hide a happy or encouraging note for someone to find. You could hide it for your mom, your neighbor, your teacher, someone you met in the grocery store, anyone. I also ask that as you do this, share your photos of you participating in this challenge in The Front Porch Facebook group (TheFrontPorchGroup. com) with the hashtag #KindnessMatters. One of the goals of this project is to flood everyone’s feed with people who are doing good deeds for our community. We will also share some stories and photos in The Front Porch magazine every month. If you have ideas or suggestions about what you’d like to do as a challenge let me know! Remember to throw kindness around like confetti…or snow! Submitted by Olivia Black | Age 14 | Marley Park Resident

Give Back - Valley View Food Bank There’s something about giving back to the community that just makes you feel so good inside. That feeling is even better when shared with friends and neighbors. Since 2013, Marley Park neighbors have been getting together a few times per year to volunteer at Valley View Community Food Bank. On the day before Thanksgiving in November, a group of us bagged over 300 lbs of carrots, potatoes, and onions and sorted hundreds of plastic bags to be used for food distribution.

There is always something to do at the food bank, even for the youngest helpers! We go, we work, we chat, and we get to know each other while simultaneously giving back to our larger local community!

Our groups usually number between ten and fifteen people, including children of all ages. Our youngest helper in November was a two-yearold and he was working hard! Of course, the young-at-heart are welcome and encouraged to attend as well. With diverse groups of children, teenagers, and adults pitching in, we make short order of very tall boxes of donations! If your family would like to join us at our next community service event, please check The Front Porch group on Facebook for details (www. TheFrontPorchGroup.com) or email Christie@ AZLifestyleTeam.com. Our next group event is scheduled for May and there is always room for another set of helping hands! Home Sweet Home When it comes to selling a home, there are more options available than ever before. Deciding which option is best can be challenging, but an experienced REALTOR® can help.

For some, listing with a licensed REALTOR® is the best option. With this route, your agent will provide advice for staging and preparing the home for sale, hire a professional photographer, and market the home online to potential buyers both within the local community and worldwide. The agent will offer a cooperative commission split to other agents representing potential buyers. Your home will be available for showings and will typically take anywhere from a few days to several weeks to receive an offer. If the purchaser is financing, there will be an appraisal and the underwriting process will typically take 4-6 weeks. This is a great option for those with homes that are “show-ready,” those who have no specific time frame in which they need to sell, and those who are not simultaneously purchasing another home. For others, the option of selling to a cash buyer may be the best course of action. Cash buyers will typically make an offer sight-unseen,

10 Estrella Publishing - The Front Porch magazine

eliminating the need for cleaning, decluttering, and staging. They can close in as little as 14 days or extend close of escrow longer than a typical buyer and can change the closing date as needed. Cash buyers will often charge “service fees” to offset their carrying costs, however, these fees are often comparable to the total commission paid in a traditional sale. If you need help determining which route is best for the sale of your home, contact an experience REALTOR® and request a free, no-obligation consultation. An experienced agent will guide you on how to make sure you’re receiving the BEST possible cash offer for your home (hint: filling out a form online usually isn’t it) and provide a comparative market analysis so you can determine if cash offers are fair market value. If you decide to accept a cash offer, you can choose to go it alone or have an agent represent your best interest at a commission rate that is typically far less than that of a traditional sale. Whatever your unique goals and needs, you owe it to yourself to thoroughly explore all options. An experienced REALTOR® can help you do that. And The Winner Is...

Each year Dysart School District holds the annual District Spelling Bee. The winner of the district bee will go on to represent the Dysart School District in the regional bee. The winner of the regional bee will represent the state of Arizona in the national bee. And the winner of that bee will be crowned the National Spelling Bee Champion. One student from each of the nineteen elementary schools in Dysart will attend the district bee on January 9, 2019.

Congratulations to both Calvin and Charly on their fantastic achievements in this year’s spelling bee! Submitted by Marilee Timbrooks | Marley Park Resident

Marley Park Elementary School held its annual school spelling bee on November 14, 2018. Each homeroom class in grades 5-8 held individual spelling bees to determine which student would represent their class. The winner and first runner up will represent Marley Park at the district level spelling bee. Marley is proud to have first place winner, Calvin Timbrooks, a Marley Park resident, represent them in the district bee. Charlotte (Charly) Daly, another Marley Park resident, took second place and will represent Marley Park Elementary as an alternate if the first-place winner is unable to attend. Calvin Timbrooks is a sixth-grade student at Marley Park Elementary. He took second place in last year’s school bee and set a personal goal to take first place in the 2018 spelling bee. Calvin is thrilled to be representing Marley Park and has set a new goal to be the district champion.

thankful for that. We will forever remember how they were there for us.

On September 22nd, 2018, our lives changed forever. Our daughter, Everlee, who was so very special to us, died while waiting for a liver transplant. When she was nearly 4 months old, she was diagnosed with Biliary Atresia. We were told that she wouldn’t make it to her first birthday without a liver transplant. Throughout her short life, we fought as best as we could to get her to survive for the transplant. We were in and out of the hospital non-stop and spent many days and nights holding her, loving her, and taking in every moment. In the end, though, her little body couldn’t handle the many complications that came with the disease and the treatments. We had to say our goodbyes. We had to hold her and kiss her for the last time. We had to leave the hospital without our baby in our arms. Neighbors and friends were incredibly supportive during this difficult time. So many took the time to sit with us or her, talk with us, and were very understanding to our situation. We will always be

One of the hardest things to come to terms with was the fact that we were not able to donate Everlee’s organs. Sadly, the toxins and fluid in her body destroyed her organs and they were unable to be used. In other countries, organ donation is an “opt out” choice, meaning the government assumes that everyone is an organ donor unless specified otherwise. In America, it is the opposite. The only way a person becomes an organ donor is if they sign up for it or if the family agrees to it. I urge you to please become an organ donor. I plead that you talk with your family about your wishes and discuss their wishes as well. Death is inevitable but living on through organ donation can change a lot of lives. Please go to www. organdonor.gov to register to be an organ donor. Our baby may not be able to live, but we’re hoping that she will live on in all of us, including you. We’re hoping that people become educated through her story and help save others’ lives. Submitted by Meagan Cosper | Marley Park Resident

Let Grow

A little over a decade ago, a journalist in New York City allowed her nine-year-old son to ride the subway alone and wrote a column about it. She quickly found herself labeled the “worst mom in America” by major media outlets NBC, Fox News, and NPR. The experience inspired Lenore Skenazy to start her blog “Free Ranch Kids,” write a book by the same name, and establish the “Let Grow Foundation,” which aims to counter the culture of overprotection and future-proof our kids. I came across Lenore’s story on Facebook a few years ago and, while my own kids were just toddlers at the time, I started keeping the “Let Grow” philosophies in mind. As they’ve gotten older and started school, we’ve set a goal for them to do one new thing every week that they’ve never done independently before. The kids absolutely LOVE it, and my husband and I have both been amazed at what they have been able to accomplish. When I was a child growing up in rural northern Michigan, I was allowed to roam the neighborhood unsupervised for hours at a time,

often wandering miles from home without an adult. My parents had a huge, old cast iron bell mounted on our back deck. Our area was so rural that there were no street lights, so we came home when we heard that bell ring…and it could be heard for miles. As I grew older, my bike became my “wheels” long before I was old enough to drive. I would bike “downtown” to the center of my small hometown as young as age

12 with no pager, phone, or wireless watch for my parents to track me or contact me with. I believe that these experiences shaped me into the strong, independent person that I am today. If you were born before 1990, I would venture to believe that you had similar experiences as a child. Recently I converted what started as a toddler play group on Facebook into “LetGrow | Surprise,” with the goal of bringing the philosophies of the Let Grow Foundation to our local community. The idea is to have a place where parents with similar philosophies can share ideas and experiences that are relevant to our neighborhood and community. If you’re interested in learning more and/or participating, please join the group at Facebook.com/groups/ LetGrowSurprise. Submitted by Christie Giannetto | Marley Park Resident

Marez Family Christopher and I are college sweethearts who met in college in 2010. We instantly hit it off, and I was so drawn to his big personality and witty charm. We were able to push and support each other through the challenges of being student athletes and away from home. He left in August for 15 weeks of Army basic training in Missouri where he has been training as a combat engineer. Not having Christopher around was difficult as our children are too young to fully grasp the concept of why daddy wasn’t coming home from work every night. While Christopher was away, I wore many hats as I created a routine for the three of us that revolves around doing the daily tasks that Christopher and I would typically split between us. We are lucky to have family, friends, and a community that so openly rallied around us while he is gone, and we are thrilled to have Daddy home for the holidays. I couldn’t be prouder of my husband; proud of him for serving his country, for wanting to push himself, and for the example he is setting for our children.

Congratulations to the Regnier girls of Marley Park! Addyson, age 10, was cast as the lead role of Clara in The 39th Annual Jataba Dance Troupe’s Production of The Nutcracker Ballet which took place on December 22nd, 2018. Her sister, Brooklyn, age 9, had a dual role of a cousin and a mouse, and baby sister, Caydence, age 4, was a baby angel in the production. The girls’ beauty, grace, and strength on stage is stunning and a joy for all to watch.

In addition to having a vigorous dance and rehearsal schedule of over 20 hours/ week, both Addyson and Brooklynn are on the Principal’s Pride List at Legacy Traditional

School. Addyson also held a food drive for the Spisak Service Society to benefit Valley View Community Food Bank in November through her dance studio, Spisak Dance Academy and Brooklynn is running a water bottle recycling campaign. Both Addyson and Brooklynn have shown impressive balance in their lives with school and all their activities. We are beyond proud of them for the dedication and accomplishments.

Religious Matters

I’m beginning to believe that calling time spent with God “quiet time” is a misnomer. Life is rarely quiet at our house, and I often find myself frustrated when “quiet time” is really a cacophony of interruptions from my three sweet kiddos. As a mom, it can also be discouraging to hear people say that you need to rise hours before dawn to spend time alone in the Word. I feel terrible if I can’t drag myself out of bed, certain God is displeased because I chose sleep. Grace goes out the window, and I’m mired in guilt. There is another way. It involves more interruptions, but these tips have helped me reframe my expectations and embrace freedom from “mom guilt” when spending time with God. Instead of secluding ourselves, we can let our kids see us battling to be in the Word. Our children learn not only what we teach them, but also what we model for them. We will be interrupted sometimes but pausing to refill a juice cup is worth it for our kids to see us spending time with Jesus. We often fall into two extremes when we read

Estrella Publishing - The Front Porch magazine

Scripture. The one extreme is that we go deep.

This is wonderful, but most young moms can’t sit down and spend hours every day reading and praying. When we fail to keep it up, we often fall to the other extreme, devotional reading. We read a quick verse and a few paragraphs from a well-meaning author. While this is far more manageable and certainly encouraging, we miss context when we read this way; and we can become dependent on summaries of the Word of God. The happy medium may seem simplistic. We need to read the bible and read often! The time will come when we can go deeper, and when that happens we will have a foundation of familiarity with the text because we’ve been reading regularly. Start out time with God with prayer. It’s the Lord who uses the Bible to change us. We need to start off our time with God by asking Him to help us see what He wants us to see in His Word. We need His help to push through interruptions and grow. He meets us in the quiet and in the chaos. This year, invite Him to speak louder than all of it.
