Welcome to your November edition of The Front Porch magazine!
Thanksgiving this year, may it be filled with love, laughs, and plenty of good food.
My husband and I moved to Marley Park during the summer of 2013. The home we purchased had been a HUD foreclosure…so it was a mess. By Thanksgiving, we were still working on getting our home into what most would consider “livable” condition. Our kids were 1- and 3-years-old at the time. The idea of cooking a Thanksgiving meal for our family was a little daunting!
As Veterans Day is this month as well, please take a moment to reflect on all you are thankful for, including our nation’s veterans for their duty, honor, and sacrifice for the freedoms we enjoy every day. In the words of Dan Lipinski, “On this Veterans Day, let us remember the service of our veterans, and let us renew our national promise to fulfill our sacred obligations to our veterans and their families who have sacrificed so much so that we can live free.”
Thankfully (pun intended), we were invited to the annual Marley Park Community Thanksgiving pot luck, where we enjoyed a traditional Thanksgiving meal while getting to know some of our wonderful new neighbors. The Community Thanksgiving pot luck tradition was started by a former Marley Park resident. This will be our family’s fifth year attending and my fourth year organizing the event. My husband and I have lived in Arizona for 22 and 18 years, respectively, but the holidays are always a reminder that we aren’t natives and have no family in the area (except for my parents who are seasonal residents in the winter). I have truly enjoyed planning the Community Thanksgiving pot luck and providing a warm and welcoming place for other Marley Park residents who have no family nearby.
See you on The Front Porch!

On Our Cover
This month’s cover features Marley Park resident and United States Air Force SSgt Shannin Bredell with her son Jaylyn, age 10.
Shannin was 26 when she joined the Air Force. She says she is glad she left the small town where she was raised. “I always felt out of place growing up there. I knew there was more out there for me and had I not left when I did, I would have married the boy down the street, had three kids, and always felt that lull in my life like this is not what it’s supposed to be”.
Her career in the Air Force is demanding and doesn’t allow her to be home with Jaylyn as much as she’d like. Despite the challenges of being a working single mother however, anyone who meets Jaylyn walks away in awe of how well-mannered and respectful he is. He is also an honor roll student at Marley Park Elementary School. Shannon’s service to our country has spanned fifteen years now. With a background in aircraft mechanics, she currently works in personnel and administration and will soon be receiving her degree in emergency management and homeland security. Shannin moved to Marley Park in 2016, renting a home for a year, and then putting down roots and becoming a homeowner a year later. Shannin felt that Marley Park would be an ideal place to raise Jaylyn. In honor of Veterans Day this month, if you see Shannin out and about with Jaylyn at one of our beautiful parks, be sure to thank her for her service to our country! Submitted by Olivia Quinata| Age 17 | Marley Park Resident
Shannin had been serving in the United States Air Force for several years when she met and eventually married her son Jaylyn’s father while stationed in Japan. They divorced when Jaylyn was a year old. “I never thought I would get a divorce, and I especially never thought would be raising Jaylyn alone.” Being a single parent household has not been without difficulties for Jaylyn and Shannin. Having been raised by a single mother herself, Shannin says she “definitely fees the pressure to play the role of both parents.” Estrella Publishing - The Front Porch magazine

Connections
During the holidays, friends and families gather to celebrate and spend time together. This is a wonderful opportunity to create meaningful connections between people of different ages. However, it’s not uncommon to struggle with how exactly to do this when those of different generations, political and cultural beliefs, and religious backgrounds often seem worlds apart. If you’re looking for thoughtful ways to connect all generations of your family, from the youngest to the oldest, and bypass divisive topics these smart ideas will inspire. Passing down trades and traditions Older generations have wisdom, experience and many traditions to share with those willing to learn. Talk with loved ones about their favorite traditions and then ask which they could teach to family. You might be surprised what older generations cherish as traditions. For example, consider organizing a time for everyone to bake a time-honored recipe together. Perhaps it’s learning a holiday tradition that provides a cultural experience that younger generations have never done. It also could even be teaching a classic skill such as wood¬≠working, knitting or calligraphy. Keeping an open mind and trying something new together is guaranteed to be a bonding experience.
Storytelling and archiving One of the most meaningful ways people of different generations can connect is through sharing stories. Sometimes you just need a little help getting the conversation started. That’s why Atria Senior Living, inspired by its residents, created Atria StoryWise, a curated collection of cards featuring thoughtfully selected topics and cues designed to spark memories and fuel conversation. You can spur conversation with loved ones in a similar manner with the Atria StoryWise companion app, available free to everyone. Instantly access intriguing topics to encourage meaningful conversation, plus the app allows you to record, share and keep the stories - and voices - of family and friends forever. A few conversation starter examples from the app: * What you wanted to be when you were little. * The secret to a long life. * Your idea of a perfect day. * A value you’d like to pass on to future generations. Plan a game or movie night Games and movies are timeless activities that appeal as much to Grandma as they do to your 5-year-old. By planning a game or movie night, you’ll bring everyone together for a good time. Consider finding a board game or movie that was popular when you or your parents were kids so everyone enjoys their time together. To make the day even more special, shop for oldfashioned candy and snacks that spark nostalgia. You may have to order some items online, but it’s worth the effort because everyone will think it’s fun to sample the treats that were popular during different decades. Use these ideas to transform your next holiday into one filled with memories. You’ll inspire new connections between family members as you laugh, love and live life to the fullest.

Positive Thinking My Grandfather served in WWII as a waist gunner on a B-17, called The Hard Seventeen. He and his crew survived a crash landing in Grimbergen Belgium while on a mission to bomb a railroad in Euskirchen, Germany on January 15, 1945. They were struck by flack, a bullet from a special gun that shoots into the sky, which damaged The Hard Seventeen’s engines and knocked one off completely. By the time the third engine failed, they began losing altitude and the pilot narrowly missed two homes trying to safely land his crew in the newly liberated town of Grimbergen. My Grandfater told us of his crash landing throughout my childhood. The little boy in this photo, my nephew Xander, was also told this story throughout his childhood. He would sit at his Great Grandpa’s feet and ask him to tell him about when his plane crashed. Xander was Grandpa’s biggest fan. It only seemed fitting to have him receive his Great Grandfather’s flag. Submitted by Hannah Willet | Marley Park Resident

Home Sweet Home The Veterans Benefits Administration, a subdivision of The US Department of Veterans Affairs, is responsible for the Home Loan Guarantee known as the VA Loan program. The VA Loan program was established through the GI Bill of Rights, also known as the Servicemen’s Readjustment Act, which was signed into law by President Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1944. It provides military veterans with a federally guaranteed home loan with no down payment and has made the dream of home ownership a reality for millions of veterans and their families. No other program in history has contributed more to the wellbeing of veterans or to the growth of our nation’s economy than the GI Bill.
To be eligible for a VA loan, a veteran must have served on active duty and have a discharge other than dishonorable after a minimum of 90 days of service during wartime or a minimum of 181 continuous days during peacetime. If the veteran enlisted and began service after September 7th, 1980 or was an officer and began service after October 16th, 1981, there is a two-year requirement. For members of the National Guard and reservists, there is a six-year requirement, and there are specific rules concerning the eligibility of surviving spouses.
25 percent of a home loan, which means that the lender is protected against loss if the borrower fails to repay the loan. The guaranty replaces the protection the lender normally receives by requiring a down payment. Currently, the VA loan guaranty maximum is $113,275, which means the maximum loan amount is $453,100. This allows veterans to obtain favorable financing terms without the need for a down payment. Typically, the purchase price, verified by appraisal, plus the funding fee may be borrowed. Simply being a veteran doesn’t automatically make a homebuyer eligible for a VA loan. To be eligible, a borrower must meet the service requirements as well as credit requirements and debt-to-income ratio requirements of the lender. VA loans have many advantages and there are currently more than 25 million veterans and service personnel eligible for VA financing. To determine if you’re eligible for a VA loan, contact your local real estate specialist for a referral to an experienced VA lender. Duty | Honor | Sacrifice At the 11th hour of the 11th day in the 11th month of 1918 the First World War came to an end when an Armistice with Germany went into effect. From that day forward until 1954, the United States of America recognized November 11th as Armistice Day. In 1954, the holiday’s name was officially changed to Veterans Day. Veterans Day is set aside to recognize all men and women who proudly served or continue to serve in the Armed Forces of the United States of America. This Veterans Day let us remember the late John Amenson. John, his lovely wife Susan, and daughter Kellie moved to Marley Park nine years ago. John’s story of duty, honor and sacrifice began in 1968, when our country was bitterly divided over the defense of South Vietnam from the “iron fist” of communism.
herbicide and defoliant, widely used by the U.S. Military in Vietnam during Operation Ranch Hand from 1961 to 1971. Agent Orange has since proved to be the causative agent of several diseases and has shortened the lives of many of those exposed. John Amenson was one of those victims. John not only came home to a nation who did not honor their veterans who served during the Vietnam War, but also suffered the ills of Agent Orange exposure. John lost his courageous battle with kidney failure caused by exposure to Agent Orange in July of this year. Today, let us honor John and his family in our thoughts and prayers. Let us remember that the war is not over when the veteran comes home or leaves the service as many forever carry the silent scars of their service and sacrifice. Submitted By Marley Park Resident J.J. Marak, U.S. Army Special Forces (Retired), with information provided by Susan Amenson, Marley Park Resident
John Amenson enlisted in the United States Army and volunteered for duty in Vietnam. Service to his country was not new to John Amenson, for some 25-years earlier, John’s father before him served overseas in the European Theater of Operations during World War II. The elder Amenson’s aircraft was shot down over enemy territory and he was captured and held POW by Germany for eighteen months. When John’s twelve-month tour came to an end, he voluntarily extended his tour. While in Vietnam, John was exposed not only to the deadly fire of the enemy, but to the silent weapons of the U.S. Military - Agent Orange, an 12 Estrella Publishing - The Front Porch magazine

A Celebration Of Life It is with tremendous sadness that we announce that our beloved Kenny Be-Bop has transitioned on in his sleep. Kenny was born with a rare genetic disorder that ultimately was the cause of his homegoing. Although distraught, we’re relieved that his final days were full of joy and his passing was peaceful and painless while surrounded by family.
The genetic disorder, Hunter Syndrome, is described as missing or malfunctioning enzymes that cause a buildup of specific complex molecules in harmful amounts in all major organs and joints. Doctors informed us that Kenny’s severe case would likely not allow him to live beyond the age of seven. However, we rested in knowing that God is the ultimate judge and that His timing would dictate all. Born in February 2003, we spent Kenny’s entire life advocating and investing in his health, wellness, and happiness. Despite his limitations, Kenny had so much life inside of him. He was famously known for his immense energy, his strength, and his beaming, infectious smile.
Although he would often bulldoze anything in his path, it was a fact that his love and light undoubtedly touched anyone who met him. Blessed with rhythm, Kenny could often be found dancing to the beat of his own drum; he did whatever he wanted, and we wouldn’t have had it any other way. In 2011, Kenny’s condition took a downturn. Since then, many of Kenny’s nurses became like family while supporting us through their care of Kenny. We centered our life around Kenny and created a routine that allowed us to function in oneness until his last breath on September 20th, 2018. We love Kenny and will hold him dearly in our memory and hearts for eternity. We find joy in laughing at some of his most endearing memories and fellowshipping with others who loved him. Our family’s goal is to memorialize Kenny’s life, while advocating, supporting, and serving other families who care for their beloved children in their home just like we did for our dear Kenny. For more information, please follow “Kenny’s Fountain” on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. Submitted by Keysha Allen | Marley Park Resident and Kenny’s Mom

Giving Back
Living in idyllic Marley Park oftentimes makes it far too easy to forget the hardships happening not only directly outside our community, but even more so, in and around our country. As parents, it is part of our responsibility to raise our children to not only help those we love when hard times befall them, but also extend a hand, when we are capable, to our fellow humans even if they are complete strangers. Calling upon their fundraising experience from past hurricane relief efforts, the children of Dahlia Drive came together and raised money via a lemonade stand with all proceeds going to Hurricane Florence relief. With homemade signs, this group of energetic and dedicated children excitedly waved down all passing vehicles and offered them a glass of fresh lemonade complimented with their choice of a home baked good. If the stopped patron did not have an appetite, the sale was not lost, as a few of the children also made homemade lemon- scented slime.
Tyler Arnaiz
At the end of their two-hour drive, with red faces and empty lemonade pitchers, the children had successfully raised $406!! Like the proceeds raised from their first lemonade stand for Hurricane Harvey relief last fall, the earnings were split evenly between the Humane Society, The GlobalGiving Team, and Donors Choose. org. Witnessing firsthand the passion of these children coupled with the outpouring of support from the community members helps to truly drive home the belief that Marley Park is one of the best neighborhoods to not only be a child, but to raise one. Thank you, Marley Park, for supporting these children, and congratulations to the kids of Dahlia for once again thinking outside the constraints of your neighborhood and helping complete strangers in their time of crisis. Decorators Corner Growing up in the midwest, I have always been a fan of Fall. The color change is breathtaking every year. When I moved to AZ, I brought the Fall with me! The best part is that this decor can go up October 1st and stay put through Thanksgiving! Just pour your warm cider or pumpkin spice coffee, listen to the kids finally playing in the cooler temps, and rock tour troubles away.
Scarecrow, faux pumpkins, flowers, and hay were purchased at Michael’s. Miscellaneous decorative items are from dollar store and Walmart. Door wreath, welcome sign, and address numbers are DIY projects. Submitted by Holly Tenore | Marley Park Resident
