Welcome to your October edition of The Front Porch magazine! Aaaaaah, October! Cool water from the faucet, cool mornings in the park, cool kids planning their Halloween costumes. October is the month when biking with the kids to school in the morning becomes more enjoyable and, instead of racing home to the air conditioning, I find myself sipping a hot coffee (instead of iced), lingering to chat with other parents, and stopping to enjoy the beauty of our parks along the way. The parks look so pretty this time of year that I often feel compelled to take photos and post them in The Front Porch group on Facebook in hopes of inspiring others to get outside and experience our gorgeous Arizona fall for themselves.

all, in the words of Henry David Thoreau, “I believe that there is a subtle magnetism in Nature, which, if we unconsciously yield to it, will direct us aright.” See you on The Front Porch…or maybe at the park!

Christie Giannetto | Assistant Editor | The Front Porch Magazine

For many of us, the trees, parks, and green spaces in Marley Park are what drew us to the neighborhood in the first place. Sometimes life gets so busy and crammed with activities, however, that we don’t make the time to enjoy our outdoor spaces. I encourage you this month to make getting outside a priority. If you use an electronic calendar or paper planner, schedule it! Enjoy some alone time or grab your spouse, kids, or a neighbor…either way, I think you’ll find that carving out a few minutes for a walk in the park, a game of catch with a child, or some quiet time on a park bench will do wonders for your mental and emotional health. After all, couldn’t everyone use a boost in that area? If you’re a Facebook user, snap a photo of your outdoor excursions and share with us in The Front Porch group (TheFrontPorchGroup.com). Maybe you’ll inspire someone else to get outside and appreciate our beautiful desert fall weather… or even improve their own mental health. After 4 Estrella Publishing - The Front Porch magazine

On Our Cover

The Bergevin family, first place winners of the 2017 Halloween Costume Contest, love the many ways that Marley Park celebrates the holidays and work to create a sense of community in the neighborhood. Andrew and Kelly attended the 2017 Halloween party as hot dog vendors, and dressed three of their four children up as hot dogs, participating in the Halloween festivities for their third year. Having moved to Arizona from Colorado, Kelly said one of the things they loved about Marley Park when they were looking for a home here, was that, funny enough, it didn’t look like the desert. It was the trees and all the little parks and greenery that felt familiar and lovely to them. But after living here for five years now, it’s so much deeper than that to them as parents “It’s the emphasis on the holidays and all the activities that go on here in the neighborhood that we celebrate and appreciate, as well as the clubs and the sense of community we have in Marley Park,” said Kelly. “I’ve never lived somewhere that I felt so close to and involved with my neighbors.”

6 Estrella Publishing - The Front Porch magazine

Because they moved from a place with four seasons and there are no seasons here except hot and warm, Kelly said, “It’s just great that this neighborhood makes each season come alive with the festivities that we’ve experienced here.” She’s referring to the Halloween house decorating contest and the Halloween festivities, the Christmas dinner and the Christmas lights decorating contest, as well as the annual Santa visit, the Easter Egg hunt in the spring, the 4th of July parade (even in the heat, she notes), the Thanksgiving pot-luck dinner, and the annual end-of-school-year pool party. “It’s just a wonderful place to raise our family,” they say, as parents. They have four children; Brooke, who just started her senior year at Valley Vista High School, seven-year-old Stella, and four-year-old twins, Lucy and Jack. The youngest three attend Marley Park Elementary School. It may be the trees and the green parks that draw people here like an oasis in the middle of the desert, but as the Bergevins have learned, just get involved and you’ll find that not only is there a lot to do every season of the year, but great neighbors who will keep you here - happy you decided to call Marley Park home. Positive Thinking If there’s one constant in life – it’s changes.

Maybe you’ve recently moved here. Maybe you’re considering a move. Maybe you’ve just retired. It might be that your first child is starting school, or their senior year of high school. Maybe you’ve decided to go back to school yourself. Maybe you’re lonely and wanting to make new friends. It could be you’re newly divorced or widowed. Maybe you’re starting a new job. But no matter what changes you’re facing, there is always only one thing that determines what your future will be. That one thing is you. You and your thoughts. And really, isn’t this good news? How about when faced with changes, you remind yourself: I know how to love. I know how to work. I know how to learn new things. I know how to care for myself and I know how to make my life great with my thinking no matter what’s out there. You have control over all of it and it’s okay that you’re uncomfortable. It’s even okay if you’re terrified. You’ll get past that.

What helps tremendously is not creating a picture of how you think it’s “supposed” to be. You’ll save so much suffering if you stop trying to second guess it all. Uncertainty really is okay.

How about seeing so much joy and love ahead of you? Like my little granddaughter, who attends Marley Park Elementary. On her very first day of summer break this year, she said to me, “I can’t wait for 2nd grade!” She didn’t know who her teacher would be. She didn’t know what friends would or wouldn’t be in her classroom. She wasn’t aware of what she’d be learning in 2nd grade. But none of that concerned her. She simply couldn’t wait for what was ahead. She looked forward to it with joy and oodles of confidence. What if you approached change like that? No matter what, you have complete control over your attitude and your level of enthusiasm. Love the adventure that life can be. Love the questions. Like my little granddaughter who has now started 2nd grade with her back-pack in tow, pack up love in your “backpack” and bring it along with you. Move toward new circumstances with enthusiasm. Know that no matter what’s out there – you’re in control. Take a deep breath, relax your shoulders, smile and take the next step forward. New things… aren’t they great? You and your thinking make them so. Submitted by Barbara Albright | Marley Park Resident

Acts of Kindness “No act of kindness, no matter how small, is ever wasted.” These are the wise words of Aesop. Aesop lived more than 2000 years ago, but his words are still meaningful and consequential today. This just goes to show how important kindness is in the world. In our community alone, we have many wonderful and caring people that go unnoticed. I believe that the world sometimes focuses too much on the negative stuff going on around us. I would like to focus more on the abundance of positive things. Someone once told me, “A negative mind will never give you a positive life.” That is true, and if we want to be truly happy, we have to see the positive in our surroundings. I believe if we spotlight the good people are doing in our community, it will create a friendlier living environment. The happiness that kindness brings is immeasurable. Just the other day, my sister was the subject of someone paying kindness forward. It was something small, someone paid for her drink at a restaurant, but it made her day. I think that that kind of behavior deserves to be

Estrella Publishing - The Front Porch magazine

recognized. It makes people want to be the reason that someone smiles.

On the flip side, being kind to someone fills you with a sense of exhilaration. To see the smiles that you bring to someone makes all the difference in the world. For just a brief amount of time, you are on top of the world. Your small act of kindness often has a chain reaction. Like Rachel Scott said, “I have this theory that if one person can go out of their way to show compassion, then it will start a chain reaction of the same.” If I can spotlight someone’s act of kindness, I believe it will have a grand effect. I think that there will be a tremendous increase in kindness around our city. However, I cannot do this alone. This is a huge undertaking and it won’t be easy to get the word out. I would like to enlist your help to find people who have been a ray of sunshine around our community. Let me know whose kindness has gone unnoticed to everyone but you for far too long. Remember, anyone can find the dirt in someone, be the person who finds the gold. If you see an act of kindness take place in our community, please share it with me at liv9633@ gmail.com. Home Sweet Home Having been a full time REALTOR® since 2006, I know the annual ebbs and flows of the real estate market well. People often think our market is slow in the summer because no one wants to look at houses in triple-digit heat. It’s the school calendar, however, that determines the annual patterns in market activity. Buyers with school-age children get serious about house-shopping in the spring with the goal of finding a home, closing, and getting settled before school starts in August. As a seasoned agent, I can feel the market start to slow every year when the kiddos go back to school and as the holidays approach. This happens as families make travel plans, anticipate entertaining guests, and start to focus on decorating their homes and enjoying the festivities. Generally, people who don’t HAVE to move during the holidays, don’t. Not to worry though, the new year is right around the corner and buyers who were “holding off until after the holidays” are ready to get out and start shopping again! With spring imminent, families with school age children start thinking again about finding a home, closing, and getting settled before school starts in August.

JUST

LISTED! by Christie Giannetto

The result is that the best time of year to sell a home is typically the first half of the year. That six-month span of time is also the worst time to buy, however. So, if you’re planning to upsize, downsize, or otherwise buy another home…it’s a wash. Timing the market only works if you’re selling OR buying, not both. Sometimes circumstances make waiting until the first half of the year impractical. If that’s the case, don’t fret. Selling a home in the fall is not impossible. It may take slightly longer, and you may have to be more negotiable on price, but the potential difference in profit is something you’ll have weigh against the expenses of waiting – the cost of mortgage payments, HOA fees, insurance, and utilities could negate any additional potential profit. If you’re considering selling, your local real estate specialist can help you determine the best time to do so. If waiting until January seems the best choice, a good agent can use her marketing resources to start pre-marketing the property and be ready to list it on the regular market right after the first of the year. After all, January is always a great time to sell! Teal Pumpkin Project

Last year, the Louisville, KY Zoo even ran an allergy night with nonfood treats available. Caden loved being able to explore his bucket of new things and we loved not worrying that he would grab something that doesn’t belong in his mouth and land us in the ER. We found that when offered, more than half of the kids chose a toy over a treat. It’s a great way to lessen the sugary overload Halloween can bring. If you would like to go one step further, https:// www.foodallergy.org/education-awareness/tealpumpkin-project/map allows parents of kids with allergies to find the houses that will have safe treats for them.

Our son Caden is two-and-a-half years old and allergic to over 40 foods that can cause anaphylaxis. He also has a condition called Eosinophilic Esophagitis (EoE) that further limits his diet. This makes some of the things we look forward to as a family a little different than the norm. While the depth of Caden’s allergy problems is rare, 1 in 13 children in the U.S. have food allergies.

Knowing not all families participate, we also found a fun book and new tradition of the “Switch Witch” that will take all of his Candy Halloween night and bring back a toy. With all of these funfilled options for our family, Halloween isn’t quite as scary anymore. Submitted by Casey Ricketts | Marley Park Resident

Last year we discovered the Teal Pumpkin Project, designed to make Halloween an inclusive holiday for all children. Children with allergies, food intolerance, EoE, Celiac disease, FPIES, feeding tubes, diabetes, and other special diets all benefit from this initiative. It’s easy to participate. Just place a teal pumpkin or sign (you can find printables online) outside your home. Teal is the color of food allergy awareness and lets others know you have safe treats. Then provide a separate bowl offering non-food treats such as stickers, bubbles, bracelets, glow sticks, balls, pencils, erasers or other fun toys! Estrella Publishing - The Front Porch magazine

Local History Do the names Jimmy Stewart or Hoagy Carmichael ring a bell? How about actors Henry Fonda, Cary Grant or actress Margaret Sullivan? What do these Hollywood stars of yesterday along with renowned contractor Del Webb have in common? The answer is Thunderbird Field, the “country club” of World War II Army airfields.

Thunderbird Field, just a few miles northwest of Phoenix in Glendale, is one of the Army Air Corps most famous airfields of World War II. Built in 1939, Thunderbird Field was a collaborative effort between Hollywood agent and producer Leland Hayward, former Air Service pilot John H. “Jack” Connelly and Life magazine photographer John Swope, all founders of Southwest Airways. The group received staunch financial backing from Hollywood actors Jimmy Stewart who later became an Air Corps pilot himself, singer-actor Hoagy Carmichael, and actors Cary Grant, Henry Fonda, Robert Taylor, and actress Margaret Sullivan. Famed artist, Millard Sheets laid out the facility to resemble, from the air, an etching of the mythical Anasazi Thunderbird. Construction of the pilot training center at Thunderbird began January 2, 1941 and was completed in a record

setting three months by Del Webb Construction Company. Southwest Airways flight instructors provided the training through an Army contract secured in 1941. The training program was rigorous to say the least, consisting of ground schooling in navigation, weather, and experience flying the Stearman PT-17. The Stearman, a fabric covered biplane, was a simple and reliable aircraft. Of course, the cadets were not exempt from their daily military training to condition their bodies and minds for the challenges that lie ahead. Life as a cadet also included the occasional blunder which was quickly remedied by the cadre who sent the student for a “walk or two around the field” with their seat chute and harness riding up their thighs with each step. Students had plenty of motivation to shape up. Speaking of shaping up, the attrition rate was high, and failure often found aviation cadet’s flight plan reoriented to bombardier or navigator schools or even back to the regular Army as a private. Step into the past and visit the former site of Thunderbird Field, only a few miles from Surprise on the grounds of the Thunderbird School of Global Management that was founded on April 8, 1946. Today, remnants of the airfield can be viewed on the school’s small campus that include cadet barracks that serve as student housing, an airplane hangar, and perhaps the highlight of one’s visit is to see the restored control tower that serves as the student lounge. Backyard Dreaming

As the sun slowly rises over the mountain range, members of the Marley Park Hiking Club begin their day by stepping into the desert. The cool morning air slowly starts to warm as the sky lightens and nature comes to life. Arizona is known to have some of the most beautiful sunrises and sunsets of all the fifty states and oftentimes, those of us with busy lifestyles miss those brief moments of beauty. In fact, Arizona is also known for its gorgeous landscapes and large variety of hiking trails.

There are many options for hiking venues. Nearly in our back yard, White Tank Regional Park is a short drive down Olive and the entrance fee is just $6, or $80 for an annual park pass that gains you entry into all the Maricopa County parks. Lake Pleasant is also an easy 40-minute drive and has beautiful views of the lake and desert. Occasionally, you may come across a herd of wild burros. Some other great hiking trails can be found at Skyline Regional Park in Buckeye, South Mountain, and the Lost Dutchman State Park, just to name a few.

The Hiking Club started with a group of neighbors who wanted to enjoy more of those sunrises and mountain ranges, but who struggle to find others to hike with. As the club grows, they expect the needs of the members will grow as well. Most places offer trails that are suitable for all levels. Meaning, if there is a variety in the skill level of the members, they can separate into groups and hike different trails at the same location. One of the best things about this group is that it’s very informal. Trail ideas and suggestions are welcome and encouraged. The current hikes are scheduled on Saturdays, but that doesn’t mean a member can’t create a Facebook post for a hike they’d like to take on a different day and ask if anyone would like to join them. Sometimes those last-minute hikes can be the best kind of adventure. As the weather in the valley warms up, the members plan to take some trips to Northern Arizona to enjoy the views of Sedona or Flagstaff and take advantage of the cooler air. They currently have hikes planned at Piestewa Peak on Saturday, March 10th and Cave Creek Regional Park on Saturday, March 24th. There will be an informal meeting in March to determine the location of future excursions. Join the Marley Park Hikers Facebook group for information on future hikes and remember as the quote goes, “It’s not about the destination it’s about the journey.” Submitted by Shannon Messer | Marley Park Resident October 2018

Legal Advice

5 REASONS TO HAVE A TRUST

A Revocable Living Trust creates the legal framework for your assets to be handled if you become sick or incapacitated or upon your death. Here are 5 of the top reasons to have a trust:

4. A trust can include incentives for children or grandchildren to go to college, stay away from drugs and become gainfully employed. 5. When you have multiple beneficiaries, including charities, there is centralized management of assets by the Successor Trustee of your choice. Sharon Ravenscroft, Esq., The Cavanagh Law Firm, PA, Sun City and Phoenix offices, (623) 815-7451 or Sravenscroft@CavanaghLaw. com. Sharon’s practice focuses on Wills, trusts, domestic partnership agreements and premarital agreements, probate and trust administration. For more information www.sharonravenscroft.com. Submitted by Sharon Ravenscroft, Esq.

1. Your assets can be distributed without giving information to all heirs. Probates require notice to all heirs—including omitted children or siblings. 2. Assets located in multiple states can be managed without court involvement in any state. 3. A trust allows controlled distribution to minor children or grandchildren. Without a trust, a court conservatorship will be required for distributions to minor which have a value over $10,000. Conservatorships involve annual expenses for court approved accountings, use of the funds is limited and all funds are dispersed at 18.
