Welcome to your October edition!

Things are starting to look preeeeeeety spoooooky around the neighborhood! Halloween in Marley Park is one of my favorite things about living here! We love driving through to check out the elaborate decorations.

If you’re decorating your house for Halloween this year, send me a photo at Christie@ AZLifestyleTeam.com. I may submit it for next year’s October issue cover photo!

In the 17 years I’ve lived in Arizona, I can’t remember a Halloween that didn’t have perfect trick-or-treating weather.

This is in stark contrast to the Halloweens of my childhood in Michigan, where we often had to wear rain gear over our costumes…or worse, snow suits!

I grew up in a rural area, so trick-or-treating meant getting in the car and driving several miles between houses. It wasn’t very efficient. Not so, in Marley Park! I absolutely love Halloween here, where kids bounce up and down the streets from one

house to the next, filling their bags and buckets with ease. Our kids usually tucker out before we even cover a fraction of the neighborhood! (If you’re new to Marley Park this year, be sure to set aside the equivalent of an extra mortgage payment to cover the amount of candy you’ll need.

Many homes give out over 500 pieces!)

Halloween always feels a little safer in Marley Park, as lots of adults are out and about watching over the kids, even the ones who don’t belong to them. Lots of adults go all-out with costume creativity too…sometimes whole families dress up in themes!

A great Halloween – the kind childhood memories are made of – isn’t really about the costumes or the candy (despite what our kids think). A great Halloween is a community celebration of traditions and rituals that connects neighbors and friends.

this year, I’ll leave you with some words of wisdom from one of my favorite holiday movies, It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown (1966): “There are three things I have learned never to discuss with people: religion, politics, and the Great Pumpkin.” ~Linus van Pelt “A person should always choose a costume which is in direct contrast to her own personality.” ~Lucy van Pelt Follow that advice and you’re sure to have a fabulous and spooktacular Halloween! On Our Cover While I was growing up, my parents took in foster children with cognitive disabilities.

Rosie moved in when I was 18 months old and she was three years old. Lui moved in when I was three and she was four. We were raised as sisters and I had always planned for them to live with me when my parents retired.

A few years ago, my husband and I considered having me give up my job as a dental hygienist so I could care for my sisters, but doing so would have put a financial strain on our family.

One day, a woman I was treating told me about a program she attended called One Step Beyond.

My mother, my sisters, and I set up an appointment to tour the facility.

This may seem odd to people who haven’t been involved with the disabled, but the first thing I noticed was that there wasn’t a foul odor lingering in the air.

As we walked through the facility, I was amazed by the

cleanliness, the cheery art work, the motivational quotes, and photos of the members covering the walls. We toured the culinary program where they train members to cook with the goal of independent employment in the future, and learned about classes offered such as team building, budgeting, computer skills, dance, art, karaoke, and band.

We discovered that members had the opportunity to participate in job training, volunteer opportunities, community outings, and social activities.

The City of Surprise Senior Center, and in the Culinary Department within One Step Beyond. Lui continues in Vocational Rehab striving for the skills that she needs to begin a Group Support Employment position as well.

My mother and I were in awe. My sisters were excited. It seemed too good to be true, but it has turned out to be even better than what we had hoped.

The program has allowed my husband and me to securely care for my sisters while continuing our own careers, and allowing my parents, who had been caring for them for over 30 years, to finally fully retire.

My sisters moved in with me the summer of 2016, and the benefits for them and my family have been amazing. Both of my sisters have lost weight and improved their health.

My husband and I decided to make Marley Park our permanent residence primarily because of the resources, influence and independence that One Step Beyond has brought to our little family.

We are so grateful to the Surprise Community and One Step Beyond for the opportunities the program has provided for our amazing sisters and our family.

HOME SWEET HOME Should you rent or buy a home?

The answer to that question is one of the biggest financial decisions that many adults will make. There are some important things to consider when deciding whether buying or renting a home is best for your financial situation.

How long do you plan to stay?

How long you plan to stay in the home has a huge impact on whether it makes more sense to buy or rent. Buying and selling a home involves many different costs and if you plan to sell in two years or less, the value of your house most likely will not appreciate enough to offset these fees.

Look at the long-term costs of renting and buying.

Last year, Surprise saw the biggest increase in average rent of any city in the Phoenix metro area, with an increase of 12.6% which means renters looking for a new home or renewing an existing lease will see significant

increases in their rental costs.

Surging population and a strong market means rents are projected to keep increasing over the next few years.

Buying a home means budgeting for much more than just a mortgage payment, however.

When comparing the cost of renting vs. buying it’s important to make sure the projected cost of buying a home includes the cost of property taxes, insurance, and regular maintenance. (Most experts recommend budgeting about 1% of the value of a home a year for maintenance costs.)

The tax implications can vary.

Many home buyers assume that the costs of home ownership will be offset by the tax savings generated by the mortgage interest deduction. Taxpayers must itemize their deductions to utilize the mortgage interest deduction, but with the median home price in Surprise around $225,000 and mortgage interest rates below 5%, the interest deduction may be less than the

$12,600 standard deduction for married couples filing jointly.

That means you might not be able to utilize the mortgage deduction unless all your itemized deductions (such as property taxes, state income or sales tax, charitable contributions, etc.) exceed the standard deduction for your situation.

Be sure to consider the nonmonetary benefits.

Rent vs. buy is a financial decision, but some of the benefits go beyond the financial, such as having a backyard or being in a better school district if you have children, or living closer to work to eliminate a longer commute.

There is also the satisfaction and sense of accomplishment that being a homeowner brings. Be sure to factor in quality of life in the rent vs. buy decision, too.

THE BUG GUY Termites Have you ever noticed a tubelike, concoction made from mud around the structure of your home?

Did you ever consider this to be from a pest that was responsible for over $1 billion worth of property damage per year?

Termites are by far, the most expensive pest to ignore!

There are over 2,700 species of termites and categorized by three groups, Dampwood, Drywood and Subterranean Termites.

Although Subterranean Termites are the most common in Arizona they are often overlooked and sometimes mistaken for flying ants. A subterranean colony consists of many different termites that have specific jobs just like an ant colony. Swarmers, which look like flying ants, are the ones most often seen by homeowners and are the first indication of their presence.

A Subterranean Termite infestation starts when warm, moist temperatures trigger an established colony to send out a swarm of winged termites.

This makes Monsoon season the perfect environment for these wood-hungry creatures.

Subterranean termites build nests underground and travel through mud tunnels the size of pencils, creating a path to their food source. Mud tunnels are essential for survival and act as protection because unlike swarmers, worker termites are soft bodied insects so moisture is critical for their survival.

If mud tunnels are visible on the walls or foundation of your home, it is very likely that you are experiencing a subterranean termite infestation. The best course of action is to have a licensed professional inspect your home to determine the degree or level of infestation.

Positive Parenting Three of the neighborhood kids who organized the Hurricane Harvey Benefit Lemonade Stand on September 2nd : Emerson Kruithof | Kinlee Jablonowski | RJ Arroyo If you happened to be driving by the intersection of Dahlia Drive and Founders Way on Saturday, September 2nd, you may have caught a glimpse a lemonade stand organized by a few neighborhood children to help raise money for Hurricane Harvey relief. You may have even participated! The children, ranging in ages from 4 to 9, came up with the idea themselves, and did all the leg work to prepare the stand. A few of the kids baked cupcakes, while others handled the responsibility of making the homemade lemonade. In addition to making the treats and beverages, each child made a sign advertising the fundraiser and held it up excitedly as the cars went by. The newest resident on the street, age 9, was so excited when he saw the effort at hand, he jumped right in, holding a sign and drawing in customers.

treats, the children asked for donations in hopes of raising as much money as possible.

After about a two-hour effort, the children had raised almost $300!!  Their sense of excitement and pride was palpable and the lesson they learned was priceless. In an age where empathy and compassion seem to be diminishing, these young children saw people in the middle of a crisis and decided they wanted to do what they could to help. Watching these children brave the heat to raise the money was admirable in and of itself, however, the community’s response to the children also deserves praise. People were stopping in droves, donating $20 at a time, and each offering a thank you and congratulations to the children for their kind actions.

This recognition brought a huge smile to the children’s faces and their sense of pride grew every time. One couple dumped out the entire contents of a piggy bank which ended up totaling over $60!

The overall effort of these children and the community was astounding and helps to drive home the feeling that we live in a wonderful neighborhood where we not only care and look after each other, but can rally to help others in need across the country. The money was donated directly to the Houston Food Bank and Houston SPCA. Thank you to everyone who helped in this effort. Keep up the good work Marley Park!

Decide Surprise | Cast your ballot by Nov 7th!

All registered voters will receive a ballot in the mail after October 11th for the November 7th Special Election. Three General Obligation Bond questions are on the ballot requesting funding for 10 capital improvement projects in the areas of public safety, traffic congestion mitigation and pavement preservation. Vote/ drop-off ballots at City Hall, 16000 N Civic Center Plaza, between October 28th and November 7th, Monday through Sunday from 8am to 5pm with extended hours on Election Day hours from 6am to 7pm.

Question 1 - Public Safety ($34 Million) Public Safety Evidence and Readiness Center: Larger police property/evidence facility and a police/fire equipment storage site to meet current emergency response needs at 134th/ Foxfire drives.

Police Training Facility: Repurpose existing property/ evidence facility into training facility on Litchfield Rd, north of Bell. Defensive tactics rooms, training simulation areas, classrooms, admin space.

Land for Future Fire Station, Police Substation & Park: Acquire 16 acres for future shared Police Substation/Fire Station and local park in SW Surprise.

Permanent Fire Station 304: Replace temporary station with permanent District Fire Station, 163rd Ave south of Happy Valley Rd, to meet needs for growing area.

New Fire Station 308: Station at Litchfield/Cactus roads would lessen need for out-of-area emergency response. Includes space for ambulance and

Tina Giannakopulos is a Marley Park resident along with her husband. They recently downsized when their boys moved out on their own. Tina is a self-taught artist with a passion for animals of all varieties. She is a retired special education instructor. Since living in Surprise, she enjoys taking her dogs for walks around the community and taking pictures when the weather is nice.

Art & Culture The City of Surprise is committed to growing a vibrant arts and cultural scene. The growing art scene and available cultural events in Surprise play an important role in making Surprise a unique and fascinating place to live. It seems to be a littleknown fact that the city of Surprise has an Arts and Cultural Advisory Commission.

The Commission is comprised of seven members appointed by the Surprise City Council.

The purpose of the Arts and Cultural Advisory Commission is to encourage cultural growth in the city and to ensure that art, culture, and entertainment are central elements of the quality of life for city residents. To this end, the commission encourages the development of cultural opportunities and resources, as well as the creative, social, and community benefits they provide.

The Arts and Cultural Advisory Commission members make recommendations to the city council regarding art projects, budgets, and schedules. The commission also recommends to council the selection and commissioning of artists with respect to design, execution, and placement of works of art for which appropriations have been made. The Commission focuses on six key areas: partnerships, events & activities, outreach & advocacy, education, funding mechanisms, and evaluation.

Be sure to check out this month’s events calendar on page 4 for some art and culture events to enjoy this month. The Poetry Slam features open mic night for poetry, free verse, and storytelling and all are welcome to participate as performers and/or listeners. The Art In Technology event will provide an interactive experience for all ages on how technology is redefining the arts. Both events are free and open to the public.
