Security 411
New Security Measures in Place at Newsome High SchoolAs a result of the tragic events earlier this year at Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland Florida several new security measures are in place at Newsome High School. Some of those changes are highlighted here. The most noticeable, there are no longer drop-offs to students through the Student Affairs Office. In the past, parents could drop-off money, clothes, athletic equipment, and books for their child. This is no longer permitted. In addition to security concerns there were countless disruptions to the classrooms as students were constantly being called out of the classrooms to retrieve items.A second security measure is the addition of new fencing and gates around the campus. All of the gates are kept closed during school hours. Students arriving late and leaving early must wait for an administrator to unlock the gate. This is

a slight inconvenience but necessary with such anopen campus as Newsome. Also, visitors are now buzzed into the Main Office and Guidance. This will also include Student Affairs once the necessary hardware is installed. There are other measures in place such as state mandated ‘Lock Down” drills during the year. The purpose of the drills is to ensure staff and students know what to do in the event of an Active Threat situation on campus and so far our Staff and students have performed amazingly during these drills.Due to recent tragic events changes on our school campus are necessary. It is the administrators desire, and mine to do all we can to provide a safe environment for your students during the school day. I know this is a great concern to all of our parents as well. Please be patient and understanding of these new changes. Deputy Mike AlonsoDeputy Sheriff, Hillsborough County Sheriff’s OfficeSchool Resource Deputy, Newsome High School

Hope - The Anchor For My Soul Seniors at East Bay High School donned taffeta dresses and tuxedoes. There were corsages, cummerbunds, and pictures taken by proud smiling parents. The date, May 3rd, 2008—prom night. The theme: “Red Carpet Romance.” They rode in limousines and borrowed cars to the decorations and loud music awaiting them at Raymond James Stadium. Queena was not there. Her ticket, No. 0068, went unused. She paid sixty dollars for it three weeks earlier. The chic lavender gown with crimson beading and silver embroidery she had bought stayed on its hanger, tucked safely away in her closet., along with the matching shoes and dainty white handbag—everything except her birthday pearls. Queena would never wear that dress to prom, she had been viciously attacked and left for dead and in Queena’s Journey we follow her story. Local resident and author, Vanna Nguyen is Queena’s mother, and in this book she weaves her personal story into the life of her daughter.
Estrella Publishing - Fish Hawk Living magazine
The beginning of the tale covers the attack and the anger that followed and Vanna’s eventual embrace of Christianity. The second half of the book tells of Queena’s progress since returning home in 2008. We learn of Vanna’s early years under a cruel regime in Saigon, her eventual harrowing escape in a small boat, and her courage in starting a new life here in America. Then there are her daughters. Anna and Queena. Vivacious and full of life, the future seemed bright until that tragic day when Vanna’s faith and love would be tested as she stayed at her daughter’s side, making unthinkable decisions day after day. In this book, Vanna reveals how she has clung to her faith allowing it to lift her during the darkest times and give her hope in her daughter’s recovery. The book, written mostly using an app on her iPhone, took more than three years to complete and Vanna is looking for a publisher to take this story and print it. She envisions it being printed in many languages so it can give hope to people all around the world.

The November 6 election is quickly approaching. On the ballot this year, our school district is facing one of the most important votes in decades with the Education Referendum.
Upgrade Classroom Network Infrastructure Years 6-10: Air Conditioning Replacement or Overhaul, Repave Athletic Tracks, Repave Parking Lots, Replace Intercom System
Right now, because of inadequate state funding, students in Hillsborough County Public Schools face a future in aging, crowded schools and our community faces a $2 billion challenge. The half-penny sales tax would invest approximately $131 million in our county’s students and schools each year for ten years—with a minimum of half a million dollars invested at every school. The funding would be spent on specific projects to improve our public schools. The list across our district includes building 4 new schools in growing areas to relieve overcrowding.

Wine Pairings Have you ever looked at a wine list and wished it actually told you what the wine tastes like? Have you ever wanted wine connoisseurs to stop swirling and sniffing, and just take a big sip? Well, you’re not alone and Dan Dunn is on a mission in the name of all things craft to take the stuffiness out of wine, make it more approachable, and let people know it’s not about the glass you drink it out of, it’s what’s in it that matters. Better yet, buck tradition, ditch the fancy stemmed glass and grab a rocks glass. “Bourbon barrel-aged wines are trending right now, and they are a great gateway for guys who typically drink craft beer and bourbon,” says Dunn. Forget everything you’ve heard about pairing wines with Brie and apples, he says. In the man’s own words, here are Dunn’s pairings.
aged in charred bourbon barrels for 6 months, delivering a finish as smoky as it is smooth. 4. With lamb No matter how it’s cooked - grilled, braised or roasted - that rich, savory meat demands robust red wine at its side, like a nice zinfandel, with its larger-than-life berry fruit character. The bottom line is, if you enjoy the wine then drink up!
1. With a big, juicy burger Think of a great hamburger as you would a classic artist such as Paul Simon. Both are something special on their own, but when paired with the right partner - be it a robust cabernet sauvignon or a spindly, curly-haired tenor from Queens - well, that’s when the real magic happens. Alas, Simon and Garfunkel called it quits a long time ago, but I’m happy to report that cab and burgers are still making beautiful music together. 2. With pork The pig is indeed, as Homer Simpson once put it, “a wonderful, magical animal.” You should know going in, though, that pairing with pig is a delicate dance. For smoky roasted pork, you can go with a little richer, heavier red - say, cabernet sauvignon - but try the same thing with a honey or maple-glazed ham and you’ve got a mouthful of clash. For sweeter preparations, think midbodied reds like a bourbon barrel-aged red blend, Estrella Publishing - Fish Hawk Living magazine

Take Care of You Our second child was born with HLHS (hypoplastic left heart syndrome) in September of 2013. Two days after his birth he required an open-heart surgery and stayed inpatient at Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital (JHACH) in St. Petersburg for 6 weeks. While there, we sought assistance from Ronald McDonald House (RMHC) to be close to him in the hospital. We (my wife or myself, and sometimes our daughter too) stayed in the West house for the duration of his stay in the hospital. In March of the following year, he required another open-heart surgery and stayed inpatient at JHACH again for three weeks. During this stay, we were blessed again to be able to utilize RMHC and stayed at the St. Petersburg Central House. During our stays at both houses we were given so much needed support from not only the staff but also other families also staying in the house. It was important comfort to us and to our peers to be surrounded by other families in similar circumstances, knowing what each other were going through and connecting in various ways to be there for each other. It is an important coping mechanism to be able to talk to others about your ordeals, and not have to worry so much about daily household needs, in order to be completely vested in what your child needs from you during a time like that. All the volunteers were gracious, kind, and compassionate- also providing meals at times when you would forget the need to eat or at the end of an exhausting day, your needs were always met!
12 Estrella Publishing - Fish Hawk Living magazine
In May of 2017, our son required another open-heart surgery, this time at St. Joseph’s Children’s Hospital in Tampa. We weren’t sure if the Tampa Ronald McDonald House would be adequate for this journey, but we chose to sign up at the house for this hospital stay. It ended up being a bigger blessing than what we anticipated as his stay inpatient was longer and more difficult than expected. We were in the hospital and residents of RMHC Tampa for 32 days this time. During our stays at all of the Ronald McDonald Houses in Tampa Bay, we learned just how important these are to our community, and even more, how important this is to the people that they serve. During some of the most trying times in anyone’s life; not having to worry about where to stay close to your child in the hospital, when and what to eat, how you’ll be able to keep clean clothes, who you’ll be able to talk to about what you’re going through and if they’ll understand, are all vital things that aren’t provided by the hospital, but so graciously by RMHC. Since day one at each of the houses, we’ve had a wonderfully positive experience and we will always be grateful for everything we were provided and learned from RMHC. We hope to inspire others in our community to continue lifting up and supporting this wonderful charity and helping it grow. We know that RMHC needs help to continue impacting families like ours, and help spreading the word of how it provides so much in difficult times in a family’s life, just when they need it most.

Lunchbox Ideas
Packing a healthy lunch is on of the easiest ways parents can support their child’s education during the day while they can’t be there. Healthy foods keep distracting hunger pangs at bay while providing important nutrients to support focus and learning. Many traditional healthy foods aren’t necessarily kid-friendly, which leaves moms and dads wondering how to pack a wholesome lunch that will actually get eaten. Fortunately, a little creative thinking and a few simple lunchbox tricks can help you create tasty meals that will fuel your kids throughout the school day. Consider these ideas and be inspired to create your own kidapproved combinations. Think outside the loaf: Sandwiches are a lunchbox staple, but that doesn’t mean you’re limited to two pieces of bread. To add variety and boost nutrient intake, incorporate fun variations. For example, use whole-grain tortillas to create wraps, or, go one step further and cut up the rolls for bite-size “sushi” that makes it fun for lunching. Another idea: use whole-wheat waffles as the sandwich ends and fill with peanut butter and banana or cream cheese and apples.
Colorful creations: Ever notice how everything associated with kids has tons of color? Children are attracted to vivid hues and you can use this to your advantage when you pack lunches. Put a rainbow in every lunch by packing colorful produce such as green cucumber, cherry tomatoes, purple plums, orange carrots and yellow peppers. You’ll keep things visually stimulating and the various colors of fresh foods mean they are getting a variety of vitamins and minerals. Slurp up soup: Cold lunch doesn’t necessarily need to be cold. Get a reusable insulated container and get ready to delight those kid’s taste buds with vitamin-rich soup. Whether you choose a hearty alphabet soup bought from the store or decide to make a batch at home, look for options packed with different vegetables and limited salt. Simply heat up in the morning and it will be ready and waiting come lunch time. Protein pick-me-up: Protein helps kids feel fuller for longer, getting them through those lengthy school days. It’s important to pack a protein source in lunch, but meats aren’t your only option. Eggs are high in protein, so try hard-boiled or scrambled and pack in an insulated container. Other kid-friendly foods high in protein include cottage cheese, Greek yogurt, beans and many nuts or nut butters. You are what you eat, so it’s important to choose your children’s foods wisely.

Connections
During the holidays, friends and families gather to celebrate and spend time together. This is a wonderful opportunity to create meaningful connections between people of different ages. However, it’s not uncommon to struggle with how exactly to do this when those of different generations, political and cultural beliefs, and religious backgrounds often seem worlds apart. If you’re looking for thoughtful ways to connect all generations of your family, from the youngest to the oldest, and bypass divisive topics these smart ideas will inspire.
connect is through sharing stories. Sometimes you just need a little help getting the conversation started. That’s why Atria Senior Living, inspired by its residents, created Atria StoryWise, a curated collection of cards featuring thoughtfully selected topics and cues designed to spark memories and fuel conversation. You can
Passing down trades and traditions Older generations have wisdom, experience and many traditions to share with those willing to learn. Talk with loved ones about their favorite traditions and then ask which they could teach to family. You might be surprised what older generations cherish as traditions. For example, consider organizing a time for everyone to bake a time-honored recipe together. Perhaps it’s learning a holiday tradition that provides a cultural experience that younger generations have never done. Keeping an open mind and trying something new together is guaranteed to be a bonding experience.
spur conversation with loved ones in a similar manner with the Atria StoryWise companion app, available free to everyone. Instantly access intriguing topics to encourage meaningful conversation, plus the app allows you to record, share and keep the stories - and voices - of family and friends forever. Storytelling and archiving
Games and movies are timeless activities that appeal as much to Grandma as they do to your 5-year-old. By planning a game or movie night, you’ll bring everyone together for a good time. Consider finding a board game or movie that was popular when you or your parents were kids so everyone enjoys their time together. To make the day even more special, shop for old-fashioned candy and snacks that spark nostalgia. You may have to order some items online, but it’s worth the effort because everyone will think it’s fun to sample the treats that were popular during different decades.
One of the most meaningful ways people of different generations can
