From Me To You... I have found that as we get older it is hard to lose weight and sadly even easier to gain it. We also tend to gain it in more unhealthy areas - did you know that if you hold onto weight in their stomach you are more likely to have heart problems, diabetes and cancer?

So my husband and I decided that we were going to head this situation off at the pass, so to speak. We bought the shakes and used the step trackers but the weight was not really shifting. There was a funny quote on the internet that sums up my problem. It goes something like this: “Diet: Breakfast - 2 egg whites, Lunch - Caesar Salad, dressing on the side, Snack - cheese crisps, Dinner - large pizza, family size bag of Dorritos, gallon of vanilla Ice cream.” That was becoming more and more like my daily routine. I was chock full of good intentions until I sat down at night to watch tv and boom, I ate everything I could grab. Realizing that we needed help we brought in a professional who would keep us accountable. Not only does he train us twice a week, he also helps with food choices and motivation. I am not

a happy exerciser. I don’t like to sweat, or even move too much to be honest, and Ben is great at making it ... fun? Yes I can admit that exercise can be fun. We play games and laugh and sweat. A lot. Now on to the most annoying part of this experience. We do the same exercises, eat healthy food and limit our calories. My husband has lost over 10 pounds in three or so weeks and I can see he is becoming more healthy. Me? I have gained weight. I know that muscle weighs more than fat and I think I am losing inches but it is quite demoralizing to see the fat melt off someone else and not experience that myself. We had all our measurements taken before we started this and I am holding on to the idea of seeing those numbers go down when we get measured again in a few weeks. I do feel stronger and that was one of my goals so I guess I am getting something out of this. I just have to stay away from the pint of vanilla ice cream stashed under the broccoli in the freezer.

Culture Club October pops with The Florida Orchestra

One of the perks to having the largest professional orchestra in the state based right here in Tampa Bay is the wide variety of high caliber concerts – from Bach to Queen to Disney. October also brings free music under the stars with Pops in the Park concerts in St. Petersburg and Tampa. Bernstein’s Broadway (Oct. 5-6, with Saturday matinee): Celebrate a century of an American original, Leonard Bernstein, with selections from West Side Story, Candide, On the Town and more. Michael Francis conducts, as part of the Raymond James Pops series. Plus, it’s TFO’s first-ever Pride Weekend, with local groups who support the LGBTQ community in the lobby. The Music of Queen (Oct. 19 at Mahaffey in St. Pete) From Bohemian Rhapsody to Another One Bites the Dust, epic riffs blend with soaring strings -- exactly how Queen’s greatest hits should be performed. Brent Havens conducts the orchestra and a full rock band, with fan favorite Brody Dolyniuk on vocals. Free Pops in the Park (Oct. 20-21) The orchestra’s most popular event draws nearly 20,000 to Vinoy Park on St. Petersburg’s waterfront every year, with a spectacular fireworks finale (Oct. 20). An encore performance is Oct. 21 at River Tower Park in Tampa (no fireworks). Whether you come with a date or the whole family, the music is just right. Features film scores, Broadway hits and symphonic favorites. Bring a blanket or chairs to sit on, and plenty of canned goods for Tampa Bay Harvest. Evening at Bach’s Coffeehouse (Oct. 2628): Go Baroque in an intimate evening with TFO’s strings, led by renowned conductor and harpsichord soloist Jeannette Sorrell. Featuring Bach’s Brandenburg Concerto No. 3, plus works by Telemann and Vivaldi. Free tickets for kids

and teens in advance in the Tampa Bay Times Masterworks series. Disney in Concert: Tale as Old as Time (Nov. 2-4 with Saturday matinee): Be TFO’s guest for a magical journey into Disney, with music from Frozen, Beauty and the Beast, Cinderella, The Little Mermaid, Tangled, The Lion King and many more. Enhanced with high-resolution film sequences. Stuart Malina conducts. Come dressed as your favorite Disney character. The Florida Orchestra: Performs regularly at the Straz Center in Tampa, Mahaffey in St. Petersburg and Ruth Eckerd Hall in Clearwater. The orchestra offers affordably priced tickets to a variety of concerts, though prices vary depending on demand. floridaorchestra.org or 727.892.3337 and 1.800.662.7286.

Furry Friends As you’re filling the candy buckets and assembling the perfect costumes, be sure to heed these tips from the experts at PetSmart for a Halloween filled with pet-friendly fun: Out and about Make sure pets have proper identification by microchipping and registering your pet’s microchip, and keeping identification and registration tags on their collars. This is especially important around Halloween, when open doors offer more opportunity for escape. If your pet will be joining the family while trick-or-treating, be sure they are visible to motorists by using a reflective collar, harness or leash. Costume concerns Just like with children, there are safety issues to consider when costuming your pets. Not all dogs like wearing clothes and some may become stressed or agitated while wearing a costume. However, many dogs just need a little coaxing and positive reinforcement. * Start with a simple accessory, like a bandana, working your way up to a costume. * Make sure costumes include eye and ear holes, and if they don’t, consider removing whole portions of the costume to ensure your pet’s ability to see, hear and breathe. Make sure there isn’t anything that could be a tripping hazard. Also, be sure to check the costume for little parts within biting or chewing distance. * Dogs can overheat easily, so ensure your dog’s clothing is not too bulky or heavy if the weather is warm. * In the end, the top priority should be your pet’s comfort level. “It’s fun to include our pets in our Estrella Publishing - Fish Hawk Living magazine

celebrations, but it’s also important to be aware of the dangers associated with Halloween to ensure their safety,” said Jennifer Freeman, DVM, PetSmart’s resident veterinarian and pet care expert. Keep the Halloween fun going by establishing some rules for your family and any guests joining the festivities: * Xylitol a sugar substitute found in candy, gum, mints and baked goods can be extremely dangerous to pets, even in small amounts. Just 1/8 teaspoon can cause dangerously low blood sugar in dogs and 1/2 teaspoon can cause liver damage. If xylitol is consumed by your pet, take him or her to a veterinarian immediately. * Natural stimulants in chocolate can cause a range of symptoms like vomiting, diarrhea and abnormal heart rhythm. * Raisins may cause a toxic reaction in dogs from vomiting to kidney failure. * Cellophane, plastic and paper from candy wrappers and lollipop sticks can cause gastrointestinal upset. * As an alternative to sharing dangerous snacks, stock up on some seasonal dog-friendly treats and set out a pet-specific bowl. Find more tips and tricks for keeping your pets safe this Halloween at PetSmart.com.

School Zone

I would like to take this opportunity to thank the parents, faculty and staff for their overwhelming support of Newsome’s new safety procedures and policies. I know when implementing new procedures and policies it takes time for them to become a habit. Everyone has shown great flexibility during this time. It has also been a time for our students to be a little more responsible and patient.

By implementing a few changes in our procedures we are able to keep students in class and focused on what’s most important: academics. The number of students leaving campus without permission has greatly decreased. We also have our Criminal Justice instructor and students patrolling our campus. The extra eyes have helped in enforcing our campus rules and procedures, and deter students from making poor choices. I also want to thank our PTSA and the Coalition for School Safety for their pro-active stance and support in keeping Newsome safe. In closing I appreciate the positive comments from students on the safety measures we have implemented, as well as the positive comments from our faculty in regards to fewer classroom interruptions and being able to stay focused on academics. With each and every one of us doing our part, we will continue to have a safe campus and successful students. In the Land of the Wolves,, Carla Bruning, Principal, Newsome High School

FabYOUlous & BeYOUtiful is a local community group started by online women’s boutique owner and Starling resident, Rowena Sjovall. Spending a lot of time listening to women share their desire to look their best, these sessions became a sharing and exploration of their hesitation to change and doing something for themselves, preventing them from looking and feeling their best. In response to these eye-opening sessions, she saw a need for women, not only to help put outfits together but also getting a group of women who like to empower and celebrate other women by helping and encouraging each other. Since her first offering of her FREE informational talk on Dressing For Your Body Shape, this simple offering has morphed into other inspirational and easy how to events, delivered by women for women who may be struggling in various areas of their everyday life or just need the comradery of other like-minded women. Sometimes they just need ME time.

Home Sweet Home

5. Get out the garden shears Every bush outside of your windows should be below the window line, usually 2-3 feet in height, to maximize your visibility from the inside of your house to the outside, so that means you must trim your bushes. You can get garden shears at your local hardware store for $15.

Did you know that many police departments have a community affairs officer whose primary goal is to build a strong working relationship with the community? That means you have access to a trained safety expert who wants to give you ideas to keep your home and neighborhood safe. Read on for eight simple home security hacks from a recent home safety evaluation conducted by a police officer. 1. Change the locks When was the last time you changed the locks? How many previous owners have there been and how many keys have been given out to neighbors, friends, family or delivery people? You never know who has a second copy, and for less than $100 at Home Depot, you can change your locks immediately.

6. Bake some cookies One of the best ways to stay safe is to work together as a neighborhood. We all need to keep an eye on each other and what better way to start that relationship than with a plate of cookies? 7. Protect your neighborhood There are many measures you can take to improve your community safety, with varying levels of affordability. Outdoor security cameras can reduce crime and prevent would-be criminals from entering the neighborhood. 8. Ask for a security survey Officers will walk around your house, inside and out, to assess its safety and could reveal some surprising tips. They want to help, and they are motivated to solve and prevent crime. For more information on keeping your home and neighborhood secure, as well as a free cost estimate for outdoor security cameras, visit www. flocksafety.com/securityhacks.

2. Replace outdoor lightbulbs If you don’t have outdoor flood lights, get them. If you have them, make sure the bulbs are in working order. 3. Place an alarm sign in your yard Many would-be thieves won’t approach a house if they think it has an alarm. You can get an alarm sign online. 4. Buy an indoor camera Cameras can capture a suspect in the act and let homeowners check the footage from anywhere. Estrella Publishing - Fish Hawk Living magazine
