From Me To You... Welcome to the June edition of Fish Hawk Living magazine!

As a child my parents were god-like to me. They knew everything. They could kiss away my injuries, drive me anywhere without getting lost and answer all my questions with sincerity and authority. Remember, this was before Google which makes that feat even more impressive. Then the teenage years arrived. I was full of angst and the belief that I absolutely, positively knew everything. By default this meant that my heretofore adored parents now knew nothing. Less than nothing, because they were embarrassing me with their lack of intelligence. I know, I am cringing too as I write this. I was horrible and my only saving grace is that I am not alone. Look in the mirror, you know you were a piece of work as a teenager too. Let us fast-forward to the time of my awakening, or as I like to call it parenting 101. I had these squealing, crying, frustrating balls of joy and I again knew nothing. The calls to my Mum became less self assured and more frantic. “Why is she still crying?” “What should I feed her?” “How do I stop them fighting?” “For the love of Mike, what is that smell?” “Will I ever sleep again?” and my personal favorite whispered one late night as I prepared for the birth of my second child, “Can I possibly have enough love left over for another child when this one has already filled my heart?” The answer, if you are curious, was that you don’t have to share the love, it doubles.

Now we are travelling along a road of companionship. Equals in our lack of real knowledge, swimming against the current together. There is a wall coming up that I know will be hard to climb, the time when I will be responsible for their well being. When I will have to provide the answers to questions I do not want to hear. The hard conversations about when to stop driving, where they want to live if their health declines, and end of life care including quality of life. I read a book recently that had an enlightening perspective on that. You should ask your parents what quality of life means to them. Is it the ability to finish a crossword or just to enjoy the taste of chocolate ice-cream? Is their life not worth holding on to if they can’t communicate with their family or when self mobility is lost? Everyone has a different response and not one is wrong. Once you have the answers to those questions, the book comforts, the other decisions have less weight. Whenever that time comes I will face it head on, even though as life comes full circle, I am again the one who knows nothing.

Pull It Together! TIPS ON HOW TO LOOK GREAT AND PUT TOGETHER WHEN YOU ARE SHORT ON TIME

Who struggles with having enough time especially in the morning to get dressed and look put together? Do you tend to run late because you can’t figure out what to wear? Do you arrive at your destination feeling stressed because you don’t think you look put together? The. struggle. is. real! Here are some tips on how you can look great and put together when you are crunched for time to get ready. 1. Pick out your outfit the night before. Yes, it’s the obvious choice. But really, this is the easiest and surest way that you can cut down on your time while getting ready in the morning. You already know what you’re going to wear so it will just be a matter of putting it on. 2. Keep it simple. Go for a classic look like slacks/pants and a button up or structured shirt with a blazer or cardigan and flats. Accessorize but don’t over do it. Keep your accessories simple with stud earrings, a simple necklace and a watch. Also, pearls are always a great choice. If for some reason you somehow think you may be over dressed or accessorized, remember this tip from legendary style maven Coco Chanel, “Before you leave the house, look in the mirror and take one thing off.” You can’t go wrong from such sage advice.

4. Wear a dress, romper or jumpsuit. Choose something that is one piece. Saaaaaay what? A romper or jumpsuit?!? We know, they are such a pain to wear especially when you have been drinking coffee or water all day and you just need to go to the bathroom many times. Yeah you sit in the stall peeking through that crack to see if people can see you in your undergarments as you do your business. Reality is, one-piece outfits are easy for getting ready and that’s what we are focusing on. You put on one thing and voila! you are good to go. There’s no guessing on what top or bottom to wear with it. It’s a one shot deal. Very important though, make sure they fit you well. And don’t forget to accessorize! So there you have it. Some simple tips on looking great and put together when you are short on time. Submitted by Rowena Sjovall, FishHawk Ranch resident

3. Wear something mono-chromatic. By keeping your whole outfit in the same color but different hues, there is no guessing on what coordinates with what color. And of course you can throw in a splash of color or pattern to add some pizzazz to your mono-chromatic outfit. Still, keeping the colors nice and even is not only easy to put together but also very sophisticated and chic. Estrella Publishing - Fish Hawk Living magazine

On Our Cover Family…Education…a Lifetime of Memories Welcome aboard Buddy Cruise.

In 2007, when siblings, Teresa and Jorge Arnoldson, grew weary of attending Down syndrome walks and conferences with their parents to support their younger brother, Joseph with Down syndrome, they approached their parents with a unique idea – to sail away from it all. Literally.

immediately knew their children were on to something. “It’s so hard for special needs families to find vacations that can accommodate the interest and needs of all family members. This just seemed like a great opportunity” said Pamela An amazing idea was born, and Buddy Cruise was launched. Buddy Cruise is a 501(c)3 charity based near Tampa, FL, providing educational opportunities, awareness, and advocacy for individuals with special needs and their families. “Buddy” their mascot can be found throughout the year at conferences, events and even schools across the country. They also have provided resources and materials to local schools. However, the main program of Buddy Cruise is an annual conference at sea, which draws special needs families from around the world. There is something for all ages and abilities. In 2017, which marked the 10-year anniversary sailing of Buddy Cruise, the organization reached a record level of cruisers – 477. “We just keep growing, and a good portion of our cruisers come back every year – even during tough economic times,” said Jorge Arnoldson. Frequent and new cruisers who attend Buddy Cruise view it as a life-changing experience, where they and their special needs children and adults can participate in workshops, events, dances, and custom excursions.

The pair imagined having a cruise, which would combine their family’s passion for ships with their need to create awareness, gather information, and connect with other families. Their parents, Jorge and Pamela Arnoldson 6 Estrella Publishing - Fish Hawk Living magazine

In addition to bringing special needs families together, Buddy Cruise shines a light on disability awareness. One of the main events of the conference is an awareness walk, where Buddy Cruisers walk around the track on the ship and hand out t-shirts to recruit other passengers to walk along with them. Not only do other passengers join in…but many crew members as well. What’s most remarkable to the entire Arnoldson family is the connections that are formed on the voyage. Buddy Cruisers around the country come together throughout the year to reunite and help others. June 2018

“A few years ago, a Buddy Cruise mother from Ohio had to take her daughter to Massachusetts for brain surgery. Another cruise family from Mass, who barely knew them, came to the hospital to support her so she didn’t have to wait alone. That’s the kind of compassion and support we see in our Buddy family,” said Pamela. “It takes a cohesive team to coordinate everything that Buddy accomplishes throughout the year” stated Troy McClain, Buddy Cruise director, entrepreneur and former Trump Apprentice. “Rick, a pilot for United, Melissa, a special education advocate, Pamela, Jorge and I are spread out across the country, with the help of our Ambassadors we are able to inspire and serve families everywhere!” This level of kindness and connection coupled with the amazing experiences of cruising – the dining, seascapes, and exciting destinations have made young Teresa and Jorge Arnoldson’s vision an opportunity of a lifetime for special needs families. Don’t miss the boat!

Gone Fishing When you were a kid and needed to learn something new, you went to Dad, right? He’s the one who taught you how to ride a bike and drive a car. He’s also the one who taught you how to bait your hook for the first time.

You’ve never forgotten these skills and now is a great time to say thank you to the man who helped you learn and grow by taking him out for a day of fishing. You might even teach him a thing or two. Whether it’s for Father’s Day or his birthday, this is a great time of year to surprise him with can’tmiss gifts he’ll enjoy while sharing his favorite pastime with you. So don’t delay. The weather’s great and the boat is ready. Make the most of it with this list of tips guaranteed to show Dad a fishing trip he won’t forget. * Surprise him with the perfect invitation. If your dad can’t say no to helping with a project, surprising him with a fishing trip will be easy. Ask for his help on something you can’t do yourself. You can even poke at him about how hard the project will be, just don’t go too far or he won’t show up. And then, when he arrives, show him the car packed and ready to hit his favorite honey hole. He’ll be so happy he may just forgive you for the trick.

Superline. A go-to fishing line for the world’s best anglers, this braided line has the strength and durability to ward against line breaks and will ensure Dad’s next big catch makes it all the way to the boat. And at the end of this line you can tie on the dynamic Rapala Ripstop. An innovative new lure, the bait features a unique hard-plasticboot tail that creates a hard-rolling, slashing action to mimic live-minnow movement, perfect for drawing plenty of attention. Then after a morning of catching fish on the water, hand Dad the Rapala Lithium Ion Cordless Fillet to make quick work of even the most intimidating filleting chore. Its lithium-ion battery provides continuous, full-power operation for 80 minutes, and will have the two of you enjoying a delicious shore lunch in no time. * Cap the day off right. When the sun starts to set and the day of fishing is finally done, cap the day off with a drink at his favorite spot or sit around the fire telling stories. Just don’t be surprised if the size of Dad’s catch has grown considerably by then - it is a fish story after all. * Sit back and enjoy the ride. All of your planning has come to make this day as special for you as it is for your father, so don’t miss a moment of it. Put the phone away and unplug while engaging in conversation. You may just learn a thing or two about your dad that you never knew before and the memories you’ll get from your trip together will last a lifetime.

* Plan to the last detail. On a good fishing trip, the drive is half the fun, so don’t race through it. Take Dad to his favorite restaurant for breakfast, play his favorite tunes in the car and have a steaming cup of his favorite coffee waiting for him when you hit the open road. * Surprise him with the right gear. Help dear old Dad up his angling acumen by giving a few thoughtful gifts throughout the day. Start the surprise by setting up his favorite rod and reel, before picking him up, with Sufix 832 Advanced Estrella Publishing - Fish Hawk Living magazine

Home Sweet Home Think of all the items you replace regularly - your cellphone, lightbulbs and even your toothbrush. But when was the last time you replaced your smoke alarm batteries, or even the alarms themselves? It’s easy to overlook, but the time to think about fire safety is now - before an emergency strikes. Many assume that because they have smoke alarms in their homes, they’re protected in the event of a fire. In reality, smoke alarms need to be installed, maintained and tested regularly to ensure they’re working properly. While smoke alarm lifespan and sensing technology have improved in recent years, the fact remains that all smoke alarms - even hardwired and sealed battery models - expire after 10 years. “According to the National Fire Protection Association, three out of five home fire deaths occur in homes without smoke alarms or from missing or dead batteries,” said Tarsila Wey, director of marketing for First Alert. “Just like other household duties, it’s important to make sure alarm maintenance and replacement and escape planning and practice become a regular, ongoing part of your family’s routine.” First Alert offers the following advice to ensure your family is best protected from fire. Count the alarms - In most cases, one alarm isn’t enough. In fact, the U.S. Fire Administration, recommends smoke alarms 12 Estrella Publishing - Fish Hawk Living magazine

be installed inside every bedroom, outside each sleeping area and on every level of the home, including the basement, as well as one carbon monoxide alarm on each level and in each sleeping area. Install them properly - Does your alarm ever sound when cooking? Chances are, you’ve installed the alarm too close to your appliances. Smoke alarms should generally be installed at least 10 feet from a cooking appliance to minimize false alarms. It’s also recommended to install smoke alarms high on walls or ceilings. Remember, smoke rises, so high placement provides a direct path for detection. Lastly, don’t install smoke alarms near windows, doors or ducts, where drafts might interfere with their operation. Get complete coverage - In general, there are two types of fires - quick flaming and smoldering. Today’s smoke alarms are effective at detecting both but use unique technologies that make them better suited for particular locations within the home. Install and maintain - Having smoke alarms is only one part of the story. In order to function properly, all alarms must be regularly inspected and maintained. Make sure to test the alarm, by simply holding down the test button, at least once a month. Also, when testing, it’s important to clean the alarm to remove any dust or debris. Check or replace the battery when you change the time on your clocks each spring and fall. Plan your escape - Maintaining alarms is essential to every household, but what about your escape route? To develop an effective plan, walk through your home and inspect all possible exits and escape routes. Identify two ways out of each room, including windows and doors. Practice your home fire escape plan at least twice a year and make sure to plan a meeting spot. For more fire safety tips, visit www.firstalert.com. June 2018

Living With Faith The American author and psychotherapist, Virginia Satir, in one of her writings wrote that we need 4 hugs a day for survival. We need 8 hugs a day for maintenance. We need 12 hugs a day for growth. Hugging is of course, one way to show our affection for one another. I also read somewhere that hugging is healthy. It helps the body’s immune system, it keeps you healthier, it cures depression, it reduces stress, it induces sleep, it is invigorating, it is rejuvenating, it has no unpleasant side effects - hugging is nothing less than a miracle drug. When we greet someone we know or have not seen for a while we immediately reach out to hug. When we take leave, we turn and hug before we get on our way. Hugging is a personal and impersonal way to extend ourselves. It is not as intimate as kissing, but it delivers a clear message of fondness. And even when we participate in a funeral or some such disaster in our lives we immediately begin or end with a hug. In fact, the essay I read went even further in suggesting that the special place in societies

need for connection contains no sweeteners, no pesticides, no preservatives, no artificial ingredients and is 100 percent wholesome. It continues by reminding us that hugging is practically perfect. No movable parts, no batteries to wear out, no periodic check-ups, low energy consumption, and fully returnable. What a way to say “I love you” without words. It is just a simple gesture, a reaching out to touch someone. Perhaps a little tenderness will help us understand that there is a time for everything – a time to live as well as a time to move on, a time to heal after a time for illness has passed, a time to reach out to not only touch someone, but to reach in and touch ourselves. That is why we are here. That is why we come back week after week to our Church or Synagogue – to touch God and in turn realize that we must be thankful for every moment, for every person we come in contact with and for every episode in the many chapters left in our lives. Try it sometimes – just hug and be hugged. It is not too late. It is never too late. Submitted by Rabbi Irwin Wiener, D.D. National Chaplain, Jewish War Veterans, USA

Furry Friends Tips to keep your pet healthy in the heat

Dr. Jeff Werber, Emmy award-winning celebrity veterinarian, has a few tips and tricks on how to keep your pet happy and healthy in the heat. Before you start your jogging treks, hiking excursions or bicycle touring with your furry partner by your side, it’s important to understand these summer safety measures to keep your pet happy and safe. The best approach to get your pet ready for more activities outside is a gradual introduction into exercise. A game of fetch is a perfect way to get your pet up and moving. The Chuckit! Launcher and Locator Sound Ball provides an easy way for your pet to increase their stamina, with the added entertainment of retrieving a ball that emits an audible pulse sound every few seconds to help pet parents and dogs locate the ball in any terrain after launch. It’s also critical to choose the best time of day to exercise - and noon is not it. The best time to enjoy your pet’s company is early in the morning or early in the evening. Keep in mind that in the evening after the sun is down, the pavement can still be pretty warm, as it retains heat for quite a while. Where possible, try to exercise on a grassy or dirt surface to avoid burning or irritating their paws. What we love so much about our dogs is how loyal they are and how much they want to please us. This can be a problem when it comes to potential overexertion, as they will keep going just to be with us, even though they may be overheating. Moreover, many dogs and cats can overheat from lying around the house or backyard as well. When leaving pets outside, make sure that shade and fresh water are always available. For longer excursions, or for hotter 14 Estrella Publishing - Fish Hawk Living magazine

climates, wet a bandana and place it in the freezer the night before so it will remain nice and cool a little longer. Also, make regular stops in a shady area to allow both of you to catch your breath. Indoor dogs and cats also need to escape from the heat. Make sure the house isn’t kept too warm. Keep at least one room cooler by leaving the shades or drapes closed. Enough has been written about pets and parked cars, so I’m sure you are all aware of that potential deadly hazard. Don’t do it, not even in the shade or “only for a few minutes.” Enough said. You and your pet are finally enjoying the great outdoors, and the fun activities with Fido are endless. Our pet nation has a huge population, and it’s important to be a good citizen. Remember to respect other pets’ “space” and boundaries, and don’t assume every dog is dying to play with yours. Wherever you and your pet decide to roam, be mindful of the local leash laws. You don’t want to turn a fun outing into an emergency room visit for you or anyone else. If you’re heading off to a park or hiking area, make sure you have everything you need for your trek. Travel treats and water bottles are always a good idea to keep with you, to make sure you and your pet are well fueled and hydrated. Regardless of whether you choose to run, romp, hike or trek, spring and summer are great times of year to bond with your pets. I encourage all of you to get outdoors, enjoy the warmth and sunshine, and to include your four-legged kids in your activities. Just remember to play it smart and keep them safe.
