From Me To You... Welcome to 2024! We made it once more around the sun on our journey through time - a rollercoaster ride that we’re all strapped into, and Father Time is the mischievous carnival barker, egging us on with his relentless ticking. He’s the ultimate stand-up comedian, dropping punchlines in the form of birthdays, deadlines, and unexpected plot twists. The New Year, with its glittering ball drop and champagne toasts, is just Time’s way of saying, “Hey, buckle up for another lap around the sun!”
Now, let’s talk resolutions. The New Year’s resolutions are the punchlines we come up with to counter Time’s relentless jesting. We promise ourselves to hit the gym, eat more greens, and finally learn that elusive salsa dance. But let’s be honest, Father Time is sitting in the audience, snickering at our well-intentioned attempts to outwit him. “Oh, you think a gym membership is going to stop me?” he chuckles, adjusting his scythe. As the clock strikes midnight, it’s as if the universe is delivering its own punchline—
“Surprise! You made it to the next level!” We cheer, we hug, and we sing “Auld Lang Syne” with gusto, as if by sheer celebration, we can slow down Time’s relentless march. In this grand comedy of existence, the New Year is our chance to join the laughter, to embrace the absurdity of resolutions, and to revel in the unpredictable hilarity that time throws our way. It’s a reminder that we have the power to find joy in the journey, to laugh at life’s quirks, and to share a good-natured guffaw with the ultimate timekeeper himself. So, here’s to another year in the cosmic comedy club! May your New Year be filled with laughter, resilience in the face of cosmic jokes, and the wisdom to appreciate the punchlines that make this wild ride worthwhile. Cheers to Time’s standup act, and may we all be VIPs in this celestial comedy club of existence!

Texas is one of the oldest wine growing states in the union, with vines planted by Spanish missionaries over 100 years before California or Virginia. Today Texas is a noteworthy player in the American wine scene, ranking 4th in wine production behind California, Washington, and Oregon. Resolutions
The tradition of making New Year resolutions has a long and diverse history, rooted in various cultural and religious practices that span centuries. The concept of setting goals for selfimprovement and reflecting on personal growth as the year comes to a close is a common thread that weaves through different societies and time periods. One of the earliest recorded instances of New Year resolutions can be traced back to ancient Babylon, around 4,000 years ago. The Babylonians celebrated the New Year with an 11-day festival called Akitu, during which they made promises to the gods to repay debts and return borrowed objects. These promises were considered a way of starting the year with a clean slate and ensuring the favor of the gods. In ancient Rome, citizens would make promises to the god Janus, the deity of beginnings and transitions, at the start of the year. These resolutions were seen as a way to seek Janus’s blessings for the year ahead and to foster personal and moral development.
secular goals rather than strictly religious ones. In the modern era, the tradition of making New Year resolutions has become a global phenomenon, with people from various cultures participating in the practice. While the resolutions themselves may vary, common themes include health and fitness, financial stability, personal relationships, and career advancement. The tradition has also been influenced by the rise of self-help literature and the wellness movement, which promote the idea of continuous self-improvement. Despite its long and varied history, the concept of New Year resolutions remains a powerful and enduring tradition. It reflects a universal human desire for growth, improvement, and the opportunity for a fresh start as a new year begins. Whether rooted in ancient religious practices or modern secular ideals, the tradition of making resolutions continues to be a meaningful and culturally rich way for individuals to set intentions and strive for a better future.
During medieval Christianity, the practice of making resolutions became intertwined with the concept of repentance. As the Feast of the Circumcision, a Christian holy day, fell on January 1st, believers would reflect on their sins and resolve to lead a more virtuous life in the coming year. This religious association with New Year resolutions persisted through the centuries. The tradition evolved further during the 17th and 18th centuries in Europe. Early Puritans in America embraced the idea of self-examination and resolution-setting, emphasizing the importance of self-discipline and improvement. The secularization of New Year resolutions gained momentum in the 19th century, as people began to focus on personal development and 8

The Bug Guy As the new year rolls in, residents of the West Valley can look forward to a fresh start—and this includes taking proactive steps to keep their home free from pests. January brings mild weather and a sense of renewal, making it the perfect time to tackle pest control with an uplifting mindset. With the cooler temperatures, many pests might seek warmth and shelter indoors, making it essential to create a protective barrier around your home. By implementing simple measures, residents can enjoy a pest free living space throughout the year. One of the key aspects of pest control is preventive maintenance. This can involve sealing cracks and crevices in and around the home, repairing screens on windows and doors, and keeping the living spaces clean and clutter-free. By staying proactive, residents can limit the opportunities for pests to invade their homes and disrupt their peace of mind. Additionally, being mindful of environmental factors is important in pest control. In January, we experience a relatively dry climate, which can affect pest behavior. By understanding the local ecosystem, residents can better anticipate and address potential pest issues. Embracing eco-friendly pest control methods not only helps in preserving the natural balance but also contributes to the overall well-being of the community. Moreover, January provides an opportunity for a mindset shift toward proactive and sustainable pest control. Rather than reacting to pest problems as they arise, residents can adopt a proactive approach by scheduling regular pest inspections and maintenance. This forward-thinking attitude not only prevents potential infestations but also promotes a sense Estrella Publishing - CB Living magazine
of empowerment and control over the living environment. Furthermore, staying informed about pest control best practices and advancements is uplifting in itself. Taking the time to learn about new methods, products, and technologies can empower residents to make informed decisions and stay ahead of potential pest threats. This knowledge empowers individuals to be proactive and resilient in the face of pest challenges. Ultimately, the start of the year in the West Valley provides an opportunity for residents to embrace a positive and proactive approach to pest control. By fostering staying informed, and taking eco-friendly measures, residents can create a cleaner, more harmonious living environment. With the right mindset and actions, the West Valley can remain a welcoming and pest-free oasis for all who call it home. Submitted by Larry Cash, of Estrella Mountain Pest Control

Money Matters
Saving money for retirement is a critical financial goal that requires careful planning and discipline. Here are some key strategies to help you effectively save for retirement: • Start Early: The sooner you begin, the more time your investments have to grow. Even small amounts saved consistently over time can accumulate into a significant retirement fund. • Set Clear Goals: Determine how much money you’ll need for a comfortable retirement. Having a clear target will guide your savings strategy. • Create a Budget: Track your income and expenses to identify areas where you can cut costs. Allocate a portion of your income specifically for retirement savings. Creating and sticking to a budget ensures that you prioritize saving for the future. • Take Advantage of Employer-Sponsored Plans: If your employer offers a retirement savings plan, such as a 401(k). These plans often include employer contributions and provide tax advantages that can boost your savings. •Maximize Contributions: Contribute as much as you can to retirement accounts.
14
Estrella Publishing - CB Living magazine
• Diversify Investments: Spread your investments across different asset classes, such as stocks, bonds, and real estate, to reduce the impact of poor performance in any one area. • Take Advantage of Catch-Up Contributions: If you’re age 50 or older, you may be eligible for catch-up contributions to retirement accounts, allowing you to contribute additional funds beyond the regular limits. • Regularly Review and Adjust: Periodically review your retirement plan and adjust your contributions and investment strategy as needed. • Emergency Fund: Maintain an emergency fund to cover unexpected expenses, so you’re not forced to dip into your retirement savings during unforeseen financial challenges. • Seek Professional Advice: Consider consulting with a financial advisor to ensure your retirement plan aligns with your goals and risk tolerance. Professional advice can help optimize your strategy and address any unique aspects of your financial situation. Remember, saving for retirement is a longterm commitment. Consistency, discipline, and informed decision-making are key to building a solid financial foundation for your retirement years.

Adopt/Shop? The decision to welcome a new pet into your life is a significant one, and the choice between adopting from a shelter and buying from a breeder comes with its own set of merits. Understanding the strengths of each option can help potential pet parents make an informed decision based on their preferences, values, and lifestyle. Adopting a pet from a shelter is a compassionate choice that can bring immeasurable joy to both the adopter and the adopted. By choosing adoption, individuals not only give a loving home to a deserving pet but also contribute to the broader effort to address the issue of pet overpopulation and reduce the number of animals in shelters. On the other hand, purchasing a pet from a breeder can appeal to those seeking specific traits, appearances, or lineage. This option may be suitable for individuals who require predictability in terms of size, temperament, and potential health issues associated with specific breeds. Financial considerations also play a role in the decision-making process. Adoption fees from shelters are typically more affordable and often include vaccinations, spaying or neutering, and other essential veterinary care. Conversely, buying a pet from a breeder can be more expensive, considering the initial purchase cost and potential additional expenses related to veterinary care and other necessities. The choice between pet adoption and buying from a breeder is a personal one - both options offer the opportunity to provide a loving home for a pet, and each comes with its own set of merits. By carefully weighing the factors that matter most to them, potential pet parents can make a choice that aligns with their values and ensures a fulfilling and harmonious companionship.
