From Me To You...

Are you a puzzler? I have recently transformed into a committed (easy) crossword fanatic. It all started with my mother who could beat you in scrabble with words that you could not fathom as being real, and yet, every time, we would discover that they were. She passed along her love of words to me and apart from an occasional game of Banangrams and our daily Wordle with the kids that was it as far as family puzzles go.

On a recent trip to visit my stepmother, things ramped up in a surprising way. My adult daughters came along and we found ourselves bonding over the morning quick crossword. (In a real paper that my Dad bought every morning!)

I have always thought of crosswords as a solitary experience but they are so much more fun when you involve the whole room. Conversations are begun, discussions of the merits of one word

over another ensue, and the camaraderie that grows as we groan over a choice of solution is lovely.

I thought that once the visit was over, so would the heady days of family puzzle time, but I woke up a few mornings ago to a text from one of the kids. She had discovered the mini puzzle app from the NY Times and included were Wordle and Mini crosswords. These things are perfect for the micro attention span of today’s Millennials (and let’s face it, most adults). A crossword that takes less than 10 minutes and, the key for our engagement, a timer. You can share not only the win but the time it takes you to get there.

Now my mornings begin with a cup of coffee and the mini crossword, followed by Wordle and then I wait to see who posts the fastest time. The beauty of this is not only connection with my busy-with-their-own-lives kids, but I am exercising my brain at the same time. I know it is a muscle that needs to stretch as much as the rest of me and I am aware of ‘the use it or lose it’ future ahead of all of us. I highly recommend trying it for yourself and let’s be honest, if I can retain brain cells along with family bonding time, who’s to complain?

Corte Bella Vets Remember the Heroes and Victims of 9-11 On the somber morning of September 11th , 2023, Corte Bella residents came together to pay tribute to the heroes and victims of the tragic events that unfolded on that fateful day in 2001.

The local Fire Department 103 conducted their Bell Ceremony which has become a symbol of remembrance, resilience, and unity within the community.

September Harvest On-line Auction was an overwhelming success! We raised $3,000 which will result in area veterans being helped to keep utilities on, avoid eviction, and help with other needs.

Support Provided Since organizing in April 2014, the Corte Bella Vets have raised and donated over $500,000 in cash or gifts to needy Arizona Veterans and Veteran Families.

Wine Tasting Group Northwest Italy’s Piedmont Region

The Piedmont region is in northwest Italy.

Piedmont wine growing is influenced by two quite contrasting climates – the Alps to the north, and the Mediterranean to the south. It is precisely this contrast that gives us a broad range of wine styles and varietals. The Piedmont region produces more DOCG (Denominazione di Origine Controllata e Garantita) wines, the top rating in Italy, than any other region. Let’s take a trip to Piedmont, or Piemonte, as the Italians call it, and uncover some of their gems.

To break the Piedmont area down, let’s start with the varietals. Piedmont is dominated by two black grapes – Barbera and Nebbiolo. Barbera is the highest production wine in Piedmont and is what the locals will be drinking. The Barbera wines offer aromas of raspberries and blackberries, smoky with a spicy finish. Nebbiolo makes the magnificent rich and smoky Barolo and the elegant Barbaresco. We can describe the aromas from the Nebbiolo as floral cherry and

The famous Barolo wines, made from 100% Nebbiolo, are collected around the world. The rich tannins make it optimal for collectors. As the Barolo ages, if stored properly, will develop into a soft and delicate wine. The Piedmont sub-regions of Langhe and Alba also produce Nebbiolo that are softer in tannins and can be compared to Pinot Noir.

The remaining red varietals include Dolcetto, a low acid and fruit forward wine; Malvasia, an off-dry or sweet style wine; Grignolino, a lightbodied wine with strawberry or cherry notes; and Freisa, a light wine, with notes of wild berries, sage, or green olives.

Piedmont also produces some exceptional white wines. We begin with the Moscato Bianco, a wine with sweet notes of honeydew melon and ripe pear. Moscato Bianco can be made in a variety of styles with varying degrees of sweetness. Cortese is a white varietal delivering crisp dry aromas of lemon, apple, and melon.

We complete our tour of Piedmont with a white varietal I discovered called Arneis. This wonderful wine has juicy flavors of peach and lemon yet lingers with a spicy flavorful finish. If visiting the Piedmont region in the summer, this will be a great trade-off from the usual Nebbiolo or Barbera wines.

Like the Italians, choose any one of these fantastic wines with your meal, and you won’t be disappointed. In addition to the great wines of the Piedmont region, they are also known for truffle. It is the combination of a good wine and a truffle laced meal that stand out in the Piedmont region of Italy!

Christmas Spirit The San Ramon Stringers invite you and your guests to join us in the 15th annual WALKABOUT-NIGHT. Over the past years, this event has become a loved tradition at Corte Bella.

Residents and their guests have come to look forward to the event as the beginning of the Christmas season.

Walk-About-Night began in 2009. The Salvation Army Red Kettle was added two years later. That year we raised $1,500. The following year, it doubled! This continued through last year which totaled over $25,000! In total, the Salvation Army Red Kettles have been filled with $136,000 in donations.

What started with just a few

strings of lights on a few houses has expanded to nearly 50 houses on surrounding streets including thousands of strings of lights and animated decorations.

Many hours of effort, a lot of expense and tons of laughter and fun have made this activity a “one-ofa-kind” event. The contribution of time and effort by residents is rewarded by the generous donation in the Red Kettles. This event is a major contribution to the efforts of the local Salvation Army chapter. Corte Bella residents have made it known that we are a caring community who are willing to help others and spread the true meaning of Christmas.

Please come by Friday, December 1st and see this amazing display of seasonal decorations.

Notice the colorful arch at the entrance, the Nativity scene, the Red Kettle, the colorful mailboxes and the red rope lights outlining the street. Santa and his Elf helper usually make an appearance in their special sleigh.

Legal Advice MAKE A WILL NOT A MISTAKE

While there are many forms of estate planning documents available on line, there are just as many ways to make mistakes that could cause problems for you and your loved ones.

• Original documents are important. Financial institutions want to see original powers of attorney and Wills. When there is only a copy of the Will, the court process to probate can be double the time and cost of probating an original.

• Legal terms have specific meaning. If the term “heir” is used, when meaning “descendants,” unintended rights could be given to a spouse or sibling.

• Powers of attorney should not be contingent on you being incapacitated. Once you are found

incapacitated, you lose your legal rights to handle financial decisions. You should not have to lose your rights, when you just need help on the phone or going to the bank.

• Health care powers of attorney should cover mental health and medical health care. Avoid court intervention by having a complete health care power of attorney.

• With a trust, probate can only be avoided if assets are titled to the trust or made payable to a trust. Without a trust, probate can be avoided by utilizing beneficiary designations on accounts and a Beneficiary Deed for real estate.

Furry Friends ​ awtoberfest!! Was held Saturday, Sep 7th and P a good time was had by all. Corte Bella Canine club members enjoyed an authentic Oktoberfest beer toast served by the council member beer girls (Cheryl Adams, President Chris Hanson with Elsa, Kathrene Peters and Lynne McCray)!.

Members made donations to a local pet shelter.

The Bug Guy Ah, November in the Phoenix Valley, where the temperature finally dips below scorching and the desert breeze starts to sing sweet tunes. But as we swap our tank tops for cozy sweaters, the bugs of the valley have a different plan – infiltrate our homes and parties like uninvited guests. Fear not, brave residents, for I bring you a humorous guide to battling bugs and dodging scorpions during this wild November ride.

Back Pain

Not only is it painful, but studies show that back pain can limit your activities and impact your ability to work. In fact, the Health Policy Institute found it to be a leading cause of work-loss days, with 83 million days of work lost per year.

the table, your knees are bent at 90º and your feet are flat on the floor.

2. Set yourself up for success Your work environment can have a big impact on your comfort and musculoskeletal health. Instead of forcing your body to fit your workspace, set up your workspace to fit your body. Make sure your working surface is at the proper height, and your computer screen is at eye level, so you don’t have to lean forward. You can also consider using a Swiss ball (or exercise ball) as your desk chair to work your core and protect your back.

3. Take a break If you’ve ever been to a baseball game, you know how nice standing up for the seventhinning stretch feels. Even though it’s a sedentary activity, sitting puts a strain on your back. Once an hour, if possible, take a few minutes and give your back a break by standing up and slowly stretching. A break not only protects your back but can also refresh your mind so you can return to your work with sharp focus.
