From Me To You... I am no longer allowed to throw balls in the house. Apparently my family is tired of dodging random missiles, picking up broken items and occasionally getting winged themselves. In fact as soon as I reach for a dog toy people duck for cover. I find it a little insulting to be honest. My aim is not that bad, most of the damage is caused by rebounds and people walking into the line of fire. That is the line I am going with anyway.
It is amazing how many things I aim for in life and get a near miss, but it is not about the ones you miss. As I try to instill in my children, you learn more from failing than success. Sure success is more fun, but failing builds resilience, tenacity and drive. Learning that lesson young is preferable as it can be a hard lesson to learn as an adult. One of our children is good at math. I mean he just gets it. When I hear a problem that starts with “A train leaves the station at 10am...” my head starts to throb and the world fades to black.
He always knows the answer, always did. Then he went to high school and hit a wall. He stopped loving math and took a couple of years to come back to it. But he did, and pretty spectacularly at that, completing his college math before even starting his finance degree. He fell, figured out that if you fail at something you learn, pick yourself up and do it differently next time - and he learned it when he was young. That is a skill which makes him able to roll with the punches in his adult life. Many people never learn that lesson, repeating their mistakes over and over again. “The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results.” ~ Albert Einstein We see it all the time, in parenting, business, even politics, (don’t worry I am not going there...) and it rarely pays off for anyone. We all see the pizza joint that goes out of business only to be replaced by yet another pizza joint. There has to be a reason it is not successful in that location! As for my pitching skills, I am not giving up just yet. Practice makes perfect is another phrase I am hanging on to - perhaps I should just take it outside for a while.

Bison Golf
How Light or Tight should I hold the Golf Club? The proper Grip has long held the title for the most important part of striking consistent golf shots. Not only is a sound grip necessary but the amount of grip pressure applied to the Club is equally essential.
Whether or not you have a loose or tight grip on the Club, the critical aspect of grip pressure is maintaining the same amount of pressure throughout your swing. Players tend to grip the club too tight yes, but the changes in pressure is where many find the most difficulty.
When preparing for a shot over a hazard or into a heavy wind, the grip gets tighter and tighter with the player naturally responding to the idea of creating more swing speed. The tighter the pressure in your hands, the more the club head and swing will tend slow down; the exact opposite result of the intended result. So let’s try this: when practicing (then take it to the course), consciously maintain the same amount of grip pressure at impact as that of at address. There are other points during the swing where the pressure may change especially at the top of the backswing. The moment when the club changes direction from Backswing to Downswing (The Transition), many apply the “death grip” at that point in their swing. Make an attempt to have the same grip pressure throughout the entire swing. It sounds much easier than it actually is, but give it a shot and you’ll feel a more free and relaxed swing. Play well & enjoy your Round ~ Lloyd Harvey, PGA

hope is to bring quality with affordable designs to those in our community while bringing smiles.
A new Coffee House and Flower Shop is coming to town, owned and run by our very own Robert Kastelic, his wife, and their friends Danny & Lynn Lewis. I had the opportunity to ask them about their business so you could get to know them a little better. Tell us about yourselves: Robert: I am an Entrepreneur, Veteran, Small Business Consultant, Publisher of the Coffee News, Sales Partner at Bison Living & Torreon Living my wife Rebecca is a Personal trainer, nutritional advocate and life coach. Danny is a Veteran & Building inspector for Navajo County. Lynn, you may know as she is the Director of The Love Kitchen (Soup Kitchen for the White Mountains) and a Master Florist.
Why did you decide to open a coffee/flower shop? Rob- I want to create a peaceful place for folks to gather. Veterans, first responders, teachers, realtors and community church groups...come one, come all! I also wanted to have a space for tourists to relax and I’ll offer advice of what to do & where to go. Finally, I love to visit, to talk, to learn & to fellowship! Lynn- It has been a dream of mine for 30 years to have a flower shop and service the communities and keep in contact with those in it. Helping others celebrate milestones in their lives is as important to me as it is to them. Flowers has always been a passion as well as a hobby. My 10 Estrella Publishing - Bison Living Magazine
What makes your establishment different from others? First and foremost, we’ve been so blessed, and God will be present in our business... “As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord,” Joshua 24:15. We are fortunate to have large square footage with ample space to just kick back, relax and fellowship, including awesome patio space with a tranquil waterfall and ample parking. We built two conference rooms to accommodate realtors, escrow agents, men’s clubs, women’s clubs, or anyone else looking for meeting space. Then we have even more gathering space with room to play games or enjoy movie night. And...wait for it...we have a full service flower shop as well! And last but not least; we have a large coffee bistro area with that quintessential cabin feel. We bring all the senses together of taste, touch, smell, sight & sound. We are about peace & relaxation! What is your goal with this establishment? Our vision is based on one word- GATHER. We want to bring our community together & fellowship in a warm and inviting atmosphere. Enjoy a coffee, conversation & take home a bouquet of flowers to your loved ones. What food/entertainment will you offer? Events are a big thing in our community and will also be a focus at our shop. For example; Taco Tuesday, Ice Cream Socials, Family Movie Night, Game Night, Classic Car Night and much more. A portion of the food proceeds will benefit the Love Kitchen. We will have continual discounts for our veterans & first responders and will offer FREE coffee to every police officer in uniform every single day! Opening date: Early September Location: 2911B West White Mountain Blvd (Next to Annie’s Bistro and across the street from Timber Mesa Fire; look for the blue roof) Good luck to you all, I can’t wait to come in and relax with a coffee and a good book! I prefer not to be graded in cooking.
Artistic endeavors should be examined and contemplated by the individual who is indulging and then their perspective is primarily theirs. Everyone will not like everything. We have been blessed with the ability of distinction and personal taste. I also don’t like to give recipes in the form of directions. I’m more of a “here’s your foundation, take it to what you want”. Some of us do need step by step instructions and that’s ok. Then there are those of us who can take the ball and run with it. I love to run with it. You need to try this game I play. Go to the refrigerator and close your eyes. Pick out five items from different shelves. Place them on your kitchen counter and tell yourself that you have to make a palatable meal with these items or else. (make up a punishment). Let your creative juices
flow (pardon the pun) and see what you come up with. If the first five items don’t work for you, try five others but have fun with it. You may surprise yourself. I get a self gratification unlike any other when I do this, even at work in the restaurant. Maybe you can just find what’s fun for you and add food to it. Life here is not infinite, so you should try to enjoy as much as you can. I enjoy cooking and anything that has to do with it. I don’t have secret recipes. They are open for all to enjoy, because you should, and I owe it to myself to share my joy. Feel free to reciprocate. Barclay Thompson, Executive Chef, BBTG

Clay Allison Clay Allison was a hard-drinking, prankster of the type who becomes a legend in his own time. During his lifetime, Allison only killed four people. But the stories about him that didn’t involve killing are as entertaining as those that did. There’s the story of Clay Allison looking up gunman Mace Bowman with the object of killing him. But, Bowman was a congenial person, and the two men ended up getting drunk together. Still curious about who was the fastest, they decided to test each other’s speed with some fast draws. Allison found Bowman was faster than he was. So, Allison suggested they strip to underwear, and shoot at each other’s bare feet to see who could move faster. They were either poor shots or fleet of feet, because a short time later the two men, out of breath, bellied up to the bar for another drink. Then, there was the time on August 15, 1874, when Allison arrived in Cheyenne, Wyoming. He had a raging toothache. Now, Cheyenne had two dentists. So, Allison chose the closest one and climbed in his chair. The dentist drilled away at the tooth, only to discover he was drilling the wrong one. When the dentist announced his mistake, Allison angrily jumped out of the chair, and went over to the other dentist’s office. The other dentist took care of the problem.
With his pain gone, Allison returned to the first dentist, and pinned the dentist in his chair. Grabbing the dentist’s forceps, Clay Allison proceeded to pull, according to different stories, one, three or all of the dentist’s teeth. I can assure you that dentist never drilled on the wrong tooth again. Submitted by Dakota Livesay

Sipe White Mountain Elk Workshop The Arizona Game and Fish Department is again partnering with the Arizona Elk Society White Mountain Chapter (AES) to offer an elk natural history and viewing workshop on Saturday, Oct. 5, 2019 at Sipe White Mountain Wildlife Area near Eagar. Workshop presentations will begin at 11 a.m. After the presentations, an early dinner will be served by the AES. Maps will be provided to nearby areas with likely elk viewing opportunities. Sipe Wildlife Area has several hiking trails where you might see elk or other wildlife. Late September to early October is the best time of year to view elk because it is breeding season. The bulls will bugle as they battle to gather cow elk into harems and it is truly an awesome time of year to experience this unique wildlife event. The workshop will be limited to 150 participants. A $20/person dinner ticket is required for each reservation. The dinner is a fundraiser for the AES, whose mission is to enhance the quality of wildlife habitat as well as teaching our next generation the importance of being responsible stewards of our national heritage our great outdoors. Dinner will include a hamburger, side and dessert. Water and refreshments will also be provided. Children must be 12 years old to participate.
Directions to Sipe: Take Highway 191 south to Eagar towards Alpine; you’ll see the turnoff signs just two miles outside of Eagar. Follow the graded dirt road, suitable for passenger cars, about five miles to the property. If you plan on looking for elk after the workshop, please wear long pants and hiking/comfortable shoes. Participants might be walking distances of a Ÿ mile or more in low light conditions. Be prepared for a cool night and possible rain; layering would be best. Also, try to wear dark or camo clothing. White or bright clothes will alert wildlife when we are near. You will also want to bring a headlamp or flashlight, binoculars or spotting scope if you have one, a camera and water. For more information contact Diane Tilton at the Arizona Game and Fish Pinetop Office at (928) 532-3691 or email dtilton@azgfd.gov. To register for the event, visit https://shopaes.org/product/ aes-azgfd-elk-workshop-at-sipe-white-mountainwildlife-area/
Workshop topics will include: Elk natural history Elk management in Arizona History of Sipe White Mountain Wildlife Area How to choose the best optics for wildlife viewing or hunting Elk calling Wildlife Photography by AZGFD photographer George Andrejko OR How to get started hunting by AES 16 Estrella Publishing - Bison Living Magazine

Show Low History In the early 1900’s Show Low was a very different place. The survey shown here paints a vivid picture of the town as it was then. “A Community Survey” by Thomas Riley Greer Dated February 12, 1913. There are 39 houses in Show Low. There are 28 barns. There are 235 people, there are 66 children, there are 95 grown people (presumably the other inhabitants of Show Low were infants “74”). There is 1 crippled person in town. The Post Office is in about the center of town. The school is on a hill. Its length is 75 feet, its width is 35 feet, its height is 35 feet. 4 families get water from wells, all the rest get water from the creek. 11 families have comfortable homes, the house
of 9 families need repair, and 18 families need better homes. 1 house was built this year; 3 barns went up in the last twelve months. I know of 15 buggies. There is 1 sawmill, there are 2 stores, and there is no bank…. It is about 2 ½ miles from one end of town to the other. There are 2 orchards in town. 5 families own a flock of sheep. 21 men spend most of their time with cattle. 3 teachers were hired by the people… Hay is the principle crop, 1100 acres are under cultivation. Land now costs about $100 for an acre. Indians live here. History Notes From The Show Low Historical Society Museum
