From Me To You... I’m back to baby proofing. At the grand old age of almost 50 my life has taken a U-turn and I am trying to stay ahead of any crazy thoughts that pop into the head of my 5 month old puppy. Chew this! Pee here! What is that and how does it taste? Can I fit in this space? Why is everyone yelling at me?

So far we have removed all carpeting from the ground floor, boxed in all the outlets (not because he chews the wires but because when he runs past them he barrels into the plugs, bending the prongs that go into the walls), provided every chew toy known to man in an attempt to distract him from the table or chairs. Thrown away all the disembowelled and eviscerated toys we find every morning, and resorted to containing him in a play pen most of the time. That play pen has been the best thing we have bought in years. I had no idea of my anxiety level until he was safely contained and it dropped. Finally I didn’t have to worry about stepping in pee or something worse! Then there were the stomach issues. He is a lab

and wants to eat all the time. All. The. Time. Even when he has finished his food he looks at me like I am starving him. Consequently I was overfeeding him. He didn’t get overweight or sick it just went right through him. Not knowing the cause of his stomach issues I took him to the vet, had samples tested for parasites and bacteria. Put him on antibiotics. Changed his food. Changed his food again. Fed him a bland diet of rice and eggs. Changed his food again. Then it finally occurred to me that I should just give him less. Surprise! It worked. He still finishes his food in less time than it takes me to put the scoop away and looks at me like I am the worst mother in the world, but 4 children in I can withstand that. In order to slow him down I bought him a puzzle toy to put the food in. They come in stages, the first one involves putting the food under pegs which he has to lift out to get to the food. Took him 10 minutes the first time then 20 seconds the next. Stage 2 involves hidden compartments and spinning covers. More entertaining for us but considerably louder as he scrabbles at the plastic to get to the food. That one he has down to less than a minute. I am now looking at one that is basically a very deep shag rug where you push the food into it and he has to forage to find it. Could be interesting. Could be destroyed in a couple of days too. As I watch him solve these puzzles and meet all these challenges I wonder, what am I training him for? In the attempt to slow him down physically I am speeding him up mentally. That is the next stage I have to look forward to, finding him gainful employment so he can use his powers for good instead of evil. Wish me luck!

Let’s take a New Mental Approach to Our Next Golf Round

scorecard.

We hit a few practice balls, say hello to the other players in our group and off we go to the 1st tee to begin the round. Next time, attempt to challenge your mind to enjoy all the other aspects of golf; aside from what is written on the

We have a plethora of things to appreciate on the course: The scenery, camaraderie, sounds and smells, not being at work, & nice weather etc... Take a few moments to be thankful for all the positives that surround you as you play on this special day.

A question to ask yourself is: Would I make a more relaxed and free swing if I were on the beach and simply attempting to hit the ball anywhere into the Ocean? Or how would my swing react when trying to hit a tiny target with Hazards tightly lining both sides of the fairway? Most players respond “The Beach” So; try not to focus on the result but rather on the creative execution of the Golf Shot. Think more like an artist and less like a mathematician. My bet is that in a Golf Match, Picasso beats Einstein. The scorecard is just a way of recording what happened after the round & not the process of enjoying the game. ~ Lloyd Harvey, PGA

Now let’s look at this next shot and contemplate the interesting options available to us in order to make a great play. We can hit it low or high, soft or hard, or even make it curve from left to right or right to left. Each shot needs your creativity to be a part of the result – good or bad. I look back and find it interesting how I was intrigued by different cuisines. My first job as a young teen in the early 70s was at a local meat market & deli in Brooklyn NY. One day I was discarding the ends of salami, pepperoni & cheeses that I could no longer cut on the slicer when the matriarch of the business, who was an old world Italian transplanted to Brooklyn, shouted “no, no ,no”. She asked if I ever heard of antipasto. I replied that I had not so she sat me down in the back of the market, which was her personal kitchen and explained. With a delicate tone she showed me how you saved the ends of meats & cheeses that you cut & when you got enough of them, then you cut them up, add olives, olive oil, peppers & spices and voila! An appetizing dish.

Several years later in the early 80s, I was on a road trip to visit some friends in Baton Rouge LA. We stopped to eat at a local eatery, which was more like someone’s house. There was one item on the menu. Gumbo. I was not very familiar with the local cuisine or customs and my hesitation was evident to the proprietor. She asked about my hesitation and sumized that I was a city brat who didn’t know much about anything outside of our city lives. But she seemed to take some pity on me and sat and explained that in years gone by, folks in these parts had to improvise when it came to eating & feeding families. This was not just a reference to the odd wild game of the area. You had six meals for dinner a week. There were leftovers. Many people did not have electricity or refrigeration so leftovers were kept in a cabinet called a larder. On the final day of the week, all the leftovers in the larder were placed in a pot & mixed into a sort of stew, hence all the different items in gumbo. Even with this explanation, I was still hesitant to try the dish. Both these events stayed with me & I think about how these two different cultures were so similar and how their food theories play a part in my cuisine construction today. I love to look in the refrigerator and scan the shelves to come up with a dish just off the top of my head, and when I do, I get this self gratification like you won’t believe. In days long ago they had to do this. We take it for granted. I like to play with it . Funny how things work. Barclay Thompson, Executive Chef, BBTG

Heber-Overgaard The Heber-Overgaard Community is located just two and a half hours from the Phoenix area in the cool Ponderosa Pines of the Mogollon Rim/White Mountains and is completely surrounded by the Apache-Sitgreaves National Forest. We are home to spectacular Hiking, Fishing, Hunting, ATV Trails, and an Abundant Wildlife. Mix in outstanding dining and shopping, RV communities and cabin rentals, with all the amenities of home the Heber-Overgaard Community is a great place to visit, shop, dine, play or even call home.

Each year the Heber-Overgaard Chamber of Commerce sponsors four events. The first and largest is our annual 4th of July Festival which includes live music, beer garden, arts & craft vendors, good food and fun for all. Next we have our Annual Octoberfest, held at the end of September (while the weather is still nice) and much like the 4th of July will include live music, food, arts & crafts and a beer garden. The last two events are FREE for all of our community, they include Truck or Treat and Winterfest. Each of these events are held at the Tall Timbers Park just off of Hwy 260 in Overgaard. The Chamber of Commerce is able to host these events by generous donations from our residents and business and would not be possible without their support.

The Overgaard Fitness Trails are generally located behind the Black Mesa R.D. Office as well as one trail where the entry is directly behind the Tall Timbers Park. Other trail heads on this map can be found along Forest Service Road #50 and each of these trail will provide an interesting overview of our forest and the effects of the Rodeo-Chediski Fire of 2002. The US Forest Service has also put together the “Black Canyon…Journey through Time Tour”. This self-guided route located on Forest Service Road #86, will take you through beautiful Black Canyon with stops at several historic and prehistoric sites. Not far from this route is Black Canyon Lake were you can enjoy the day fishing or hiking in around the lake. Whether it’s the Overgaard Fitness Trail, Black Canyon Lake, or other trails located near or around Heber-Overgaard each one will include activities that can include hiking, biking or equestrian routes.

Many of our other community groups also sponsor fun events throughout the year, and can be found on our website at www. heberovergaard.org Located at the Chamber of Commerce and the Black Mesa Ranger District are several maps that show trails found in and around the Heber-Overgaard community. Mountain Lions While human encounters are rare in Arizona, mountain lions are large predators that can seriously injure or kill humans. Conflicts can occur when a mountain lion becomes too accustomed to the presence of people, often near where we live or recreate, and begins preying on livestock or other domestic animals. Urban sprawl results in shrinking mountain lion habitat and increases the number of conflicts between humans and mountain lions. The Arizona Game and Fish Department is committed to helping people learn how to behave responsibly and live safely in mountain lion habitat. However, animals that pose a threat to public safety – as determined by a strict protocol developed with extensive public input – must be lethally removed. Because mountain lions are very territorial, relocating problem animals to a new area often results in their injury or death. More importantly, relocating a problem wild animal puts other visitors or residents in the new area at risk.

WHAT SHOULD I DO IF I SEE A MOUNTAIN LION? • Do not approach a mountain lion. Most wild animals will try to avoid a human confrontation. Give them a way to safely escape. • Do not run from a mountain lion. Running may stimulate a mountain lion’s instinct to chase.

16 Estrella Publishing - Bison Living Magazine

Stand and face the animal. Make eye contact. • Protect small children so they won’t panic and run. • Stay calm and speak loudly and firmly. • Appear larger: raise your arms. Open your jacket if you are wearing one. Throw stones, branches, or whatever you can reach without crouching or turning your back. Wave your arms slowly. The idea is to convince the mountain lion that you may be a danger to it. • Slowly back away from the area. • Fight back if attacked: many potential victims have fought back successfully with rocks, sticks, caps, jackets, garden tools and their bare hands. Since a mountain lion usually tries to bite the head or neck, try to remain standing and face the animal.

TIPS FOR LIVING IN MOUNTAIN LION COUNTRY • Hike or walk in groups. • Make noise when you’re outside. • Closely supervise children in mountain lion habitat. Watch children when they play outside in areas where mountain lions could live and between dusk and dawn when mountain lions primarily hunt. Talk with children about mountain lions and what to do if they encounter one. • Keep pets indoors, on a leash or in a secure enclosure. Roaming pets can be easy prey for mountain lions and other predators. Do not feed pets outside; the food can attract javelina and other mountain lion prey. • Don’t feed wildlife! By feeding deer, javelina or other wildlife in your yard, you may inadvertently attract the larger predators that prey on these animals. • Trim landscaping around your home, especially near children’s play areas. Remove dense and low-lying vegetation that provide hiding places for predators. • Install outdoor lighting. Keep the house perimeter, doorways and walkways well lit at night.

August 2019

REPORT MOUNTAIN LION SIGHTINGS To report a mountain lion sighting or encounter, please call the nearest Arizona Game and Fish Department regional office during weekday business hours. During non-business hours, call the Arizona Game and Fish Department radio dispatcher at (623) 236-7201. In the event of an attack, dial 911. WHAT ABOUT RABIES? Mountain lions can be infected with the rabies virus. However, the occurrence in this species is extremely low. DID YOU KNOW? • A mountain lion can consume an entire deer in two nights. • Although the chance of encountering a mountain lion is small, it is possible, especially if you are out between dusk and dawn. • In an unhurried walk, lions usually place the hind paw in the imprint made by the front paw.

• A mountain lion can jump 20 feet vertically and 40 feet horizontally in a single leap. • Mountain lion tracks have four toes with three distinct lobes at the base of the pad, resulting in distinctive M-shaped prints. Claw marks are usually not visible.

Farmers’ Market & Art Walk The Show Low Main Street Farmer’s Market & Art Walk celebrates a milestone in 2019 when it opens for its 10th season. The biggest and best farmers’ market in the Arizona White Mountains opens Saturday, May 25 and is open every Saturday thereafter from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. through September 28. You’ll find the Market inside Festival Marketplace (where the card player statue is) and along Cooley Street between 9th & 11th Streets in Downtown Show Low. The market started out small with about 10 vendors when it opened in 2010 and has continually grown ever since. The Market currently has over 75 vendors and features a wide variety of products including fresh produce, homemade and baked goods, handcrafted items and specialty products from all over the four corners region. The intent of the Market is to promote and cultivate small local businesses while simultaneously attracting people to the downtown area and thereby enhancing its vibrancy. Likewise, the Market generates revenue for Show Low Main Street that helps support its mission to “be active

in revitalization activities that encourage investment, strengthen the business community, preserve the historic features and improve the overall appearance of Downtown Show Low.” Although the market is full with seasonal vendors, spaces often become available on a week-by-week basis. Interested vendors are invited to register for those spaces at www. showlowmainstreet.org/farmers-market-andart-walk-registration.
