From Me To You... With the rise in services like Netflix and Hulu, it is easier to catch your favorite show and watch at your leisure than ever before. This has also led to the phenomenon of binge watching - sitting through a season or series at a time. In reality I have been doing my own form of binge watching for years, turning on House Hunters or Friends every night. There are advantages to screening shows this way. You can fully immerse yourself in the story and follow complicated plot lines more easily. If you are watching a show you have seen before then multitasking comes into play. For example as I write this I am streaming The Big Bang Theory in the background. Bazinga! Something that occurred to me is that the way shows are written will have to evolve as we turn more to binge watching. I was watching Grey’s Anatomy and when I saw it originally the plot lines made sense. However, once I started watching one episode after another, the stories seemed to speed up. Relationships blossomed, evolved and ended in a matter of hours, not

weeks as I remembered it. The sheer number of disasters also became somewhat comical when viewed that way. I mean, how many horrible things happened to that cast and the poor patients they treated? Subway pole pinning two strangers together, a man attacked by his girlfriend’s lion, near drownings, plane crashes, car crashes, it makes you think twice about visiting Seattle. Shows like Grace & Frankie and Santa Clarita Diet are released all at once. You can see the whole thing as quickly or slowly as you want. It makes the gaps between seasons harder to wait for but I guess you can’t have everything. I have also come to realise that the significance of the show you pick has increased in importance. If you dip in and out of a show once a week for half an hour or an hour it is not too much of an investment of your time. Now with binge watching, there better be something that makes one series worth the days or weeks you will be spending together. Something light and silly or a drama that pulls you in perhaps. Maybe a historical romance, you know so you can learn something while you fritter away all those hours. I was planning on starting Game of Thrones next week but with all the backlash over the last couple of episodes I am rethinking that choice. Which shows do you love to watch? Email me with your favorite shows that you think are worth binge watching. I look forward to your recommendations!

Bison Golf

Tips for playing Golf at a higher Elevation Golfing in higher elevations can be a challenge or an advantage depending on the players shot patterns. The general rule of thumb has been that the ball travels 5% farther at 3,000 feet and another 5% at around the 7,000 ft level. Your natural judgment instincts kick-in fairly quickly after hitting a few balls on the range. It’s not the same for all golfers; however, low ball strikers experience less ball-flight difference than a higher ball striker. Don’t wear yourself out, remember, the thin air is also going to take a toll on your body. There are no swing changes that need to be made but take your time on the range to dial in on the yardages for each club. Playing well at altitude requires you to commit to a mindset and trust that the

ball contact will be solid and produce the shot required at the moment. Enjoy the extra distance and don’t forget to boast about your 300 yard drives! Lloyd Harvey, PGA

BBTG

As the weather changes, we at BBTG also look to enhance our menu seasonally. We add, we subtract, but we also highlight whats been there all along. Take for instance one of our best sellers, the Blackened chicken strawberry salad. A mixed greens combo of kale, spinach, red leaf lettuce, iceberg lettuce, red cabbage & shredded carrots, all tossed in our strawberry balsamic dressing & spread over a chilled platter. The garnishings include fresh sliced strawberries, candied walnuts, blue cheese crumbles & of course a blackened grilled chicken breast. This dish is a constant

mouth as well as eye appetizing choice. It will momentarily shift your attention away from the dining room atmosphere until you take your first taste of this pleaser at which time your focus will be fixed on calming your taste buds. Keep an eye out on our website for other seasonal specials that pop up at least two to three times a week. Any of our dishes go over double fold if eaten on the outdoor patio overlooking the pines, especially any of the appetizers to precurse lunch or dinner. Breakfast was also launched a few weeks back and things are going well. There is no good way to describe it but to say, “come try it & judge for yourself”. Here’s to making the White Mountains a stronger culinary collective. Barclay Thompson, Executive Chef, BBTG

Big Lake

The great state of Arizona; where you can drive a short few hours from the heat of the city to the cool mountains of northeastern Arizona. Here you will find mountains that boast of ponderosa pine trees, creeks, rivers, and stunning mountain lakes. One of the Forests that make up part of the state is the Apache-Sitgreaves National Forests. This forest covers over two million acres of beautiful mountain country in east-central Arizona. The Apache National Forest ranges in elevation from 3,500 feet to nearly 11,500 feet and is named for the tribes that settled in this area. The area from Mount Baldy east to Escudilla Mountain is often referred to as the White Mountains of Arizona. From the edge of the Mogollon Rim south of Hannagan Meadow, the land drops precipitously into the high desert around Clifton. On the Sitgreaves, the major attractions for visitors from all over the world is the Mogollon Rim, which have some of the most amazing views of the state, to the many lakes and recreation campgrounds located near Woods Canyon Lake, to Show Low, all the way up to the amazing Big Lake located on the Springerville Ranger District. Big Lake is considered one of the White Mountains’ best fishing lakes in Northern Arizona. Sitting at 9,000 feet in elevation and spans over 500 acres with an average depth of 16 feet, it is the perfect habitat for Rainbow, Brook and Cutthroat trout. Because this lake sits so high in elevation, it does freeze and road access is restricted due to heavy snow. However, there are many winter activities such as snowmobiling, snow shoeing and skiing at the nearby Sunrise Ski resort.

and being outdoors in the cool mountain air. Campers have a choice between 5 different campgrounds located near Big Lake itself. These campgrounds are; Rainbow Campground, Grayling Campground, Cutthroat Campground, Brookchar Campground, and Apache Trout Campground. This recreation area is the main base to set out to explore other lakes in the area as well as the Black River located on the East and West Fork. With temperatures averaging 75 degrees, Big Lake is a much sought out relief from the triple digits of the Arizona deserts. With such cool temperatures, hiking or biking the many trails in the area is a pleasant and peaceful experience. Wildlife frequents the area from many types of birds, squirrels, deer, elk, and yes the occasional black bear. In the fall, you can sit in your campsite and listen to the elk bugles. Big Lake is truly an amazing place to take your family, to get away from the heat, and just to experience nature and the outdoors in the most magnificent backdrop Mother Nature has to offer. Campgrounds are managed by Recreation Resource Management of America, Inc., a private concessionaire for the United States Forest Service. For more information about the campgrounds located at Big Lake, you can call 928-537-8888 or visit their website at www.rrmofa.com . This company cannot take reservations, for reservations you can visit www. recreation.gov to make those reservations.

Protect Your Nest Home is supposed to be a safe space, so it can be scary to think about things like fires. Seven people die each day due to home fires, so it’s important to be ready. Every home needs working smoke alarms and an escape plan for exiting the house. These are essential first steps, but there is an additional tool that dramatically reduces the spread of home fires, and the risk of dying from one: installing home fire sprinklers. These systems are an effective method for controlling fires quickly. They’re less common in homes, but they work there just as well. The risk of dying in a home fire decreases by about 85 percent if sprinklers are present. That means the sprinkler activates and puts out the fire before it has a chance to spread to other places in the home. The National Fire Protection Association and the Home Fire Sprinkler Coalition want you to know these facts: Have you been thinking of updating your Roof to a Metal Roof? Well we are here for all your needs. We also do Soffit & Fascia.

Only one sprinkler activates: If a fire starts, the closest sprinkler will activate, spraying water to control the flames, heat and deadly smoke. That fast control gives you time to escape to safety. In most cases, just one sprinkler is needed. Fire sprinklers use less water than fire hoses: When a sprinkler activates, it flows at a rate of Because of the sprinkler’s fast action and less water flow, the property loss in a sprinklered home fire is far less than in an unsprinklered home fire. Home fires are deadly in 2 minutes or less: It takes 9-12 minutes or more for a fire department to get notification, respond and begin suppression. A sprinkler controls the fire before it can spread, protecting residents and the responding firefighters. Take action now: Test your smoke alarms and practice your escape plan with your family. If you are thinking of building or buying a home, ask for fire sprinklers. They provide peace of mind, protecting you and your family should you ever face the threat of a home fire. Walking Down Ranch We are a unique community that offers Veterans and their families an array of services including transitional housing, food, clothes, utilities, medical transportation, and holiday boxes. Since being recognized as a 501 (c) (3) in 2013, we have assisted more than 800 Veterans and their family members in the Arizona White Mountains. There are 18 cabins in the serene tall pines of Lakeside on 3.66 acres located between highway 260 and Billy Creek, with convenient shopping, hospital, and job opportunities available to assist our Veterans. Veterans Thrift Store We opened the store last February of 2018. The store provides an ongoing retail experience for our Veterans and also provides funding for the revitalization and maintenance of the cabins, while supporting our community. The residents of Walking Down Ranch, Veterans Village, Lakeside, have an opportunity to learn valuable vocational skills: skills that can lead to meaningful employment. The majority of the Veterans residing in Veterans Village, do take an active role in the upkeep and maintenance of their cabin as well as their community. Landscaping, repair, retail management, and the culinary arts are just a few of the skills at which Veterans can choose to become proficient while residing at the Veterans Village. ‘’ We Believe that every Veteran deserves a safe place to sleep, a clean bed, a full stomach, and a hand up......not a handout “

Walking Down Ranch, Inc, entered into an agreement to purchase the Veterans Village property from the East Mesa Fire Fighters Charities in the amount of $575,000 by year end of 2021, securing a transitional housing facility for our White Mountain Veterans! If you would like to be a member of the 575 Club, please make a tax-deductible donation to the 575 accounts with Edward Jones. If 575 people donate $1000.00, we will be able to offer a permanent transitional housing facility.

Volunteerism at Veteran’s Village ‘V’ stands for victory Not everyone can wear their commitment to volunteering on their sleeves, but a few good people here in the White Mountains know what that is all about. Those people are the special men and women who give of their time to the Walking Down Ranch, Veterans Village in Lakeside. However, the need for lending a helping hand is great and by volunteering your

time, whether you are a seasonal resident or full time, you will be stretching the positive outcomes a long way. The Veterans Village offers services to veterans with needs such as transitional housing, food, clothing, utilities, medical transportation, phones, medication and holiday boxes. The 501(c)(3) charitable organization has assisted more than 850 veterans in Arizona’s the White Mountains since 2014. The money to renovate and maintain the cabins and provide for the veterans on an ongoing basis comes from the Veterans Village Thrift Store. The store is always in need of donations as well as wonderful volunteers who can clean, sort, price, and keep the store full of donated items that are then purchased by the public. In case you think that only community volunteers do the heavy lifting, the majority of the veterans who reside in the village cabins also take an active role in the upkeep and maintenance of the facilities while they reside at the village. The Love Kitchen The Love Kitchen first opened its doors in 1986 and has been serving 10’s of thousands of those in need every year since. We have a firm belief that anyone can walk through our doors and break bread at our tables. So many show up for a nutritious meal that will see them through each day. There is a goal to make them feel at home while at the Love Kitchen because some do not have one. Amongst those are our local veterans, homeless, single parents, senior citizens, children and families that are going through hard times. Many of our clients are homeless veterans and the time that they spend here gives them a respite from life on the street, a place to relax, where they feel safe and comfortable and a part of a community. Others are in a transitional situation and spend time with our volunteers and engage in sharing their story. Some have recently lost a loved one and may just need that companionship of others to keep them from feeling alone. ALL are welcome here. There is one thing that each of our guests have in common with one another. They come through our doors hungry and thankful for the meals we provide. Many are surprised by the cross section of people they see coming for a meal. Women, men, children, all ages and ethnicities. Hunger does not discriminate and sadly, coping with hunger every day is a reality for many. The Love Kitchen is the only soup kitchen in the White Mountain area at this time and serving a

large part of both Apache and Navajo counties. 1 in 4 children goes home to no food for them to eat. Summer months come and our kitchen serves a huge purpose in making sure they have one nutritious meal each day while also supplementing with food boxes. 1 in 5 adults deal with the same fate and it is estimated that many of those are veterans. Senior Citizen numbers are rising with having less then needed food in their home to sustain a healthy life. 1 out of 7 are falling into this category. Many are also struggling with homelessness. Ten percent of those are veterans. Our Ministry relies on financial donations from the community and our annual fundraisers. At this time we receive no government grants. Being creative with our fundraisers is the key to helping raise the money to help through the harder times. Summer months seem to be the hardest as we see a big decline in monial donations. Unfortunately, hunger has no month or holiday. It just always exists. You don’t have to be homeless to be hungry. For many low income families, difficult choices have to be made: the choice to buy food or pay rent, to buy food or by a winter coat for a child. For many soup kitchen guests, being able to come here for a meal allows them and their families to remain in their homes. A choice none of us wants to make. Our hope is to be a beacon of light in what may be a very dim one for some. We happily accept food (perishable & non perishable) , cash/check, gift cards, household items, cleaning supplies, etc. at 1715 S. Penrod, Pinetop, AZ. Our weekly hours are: Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, & Friday a hot meal and food distributed from 11:30am-1pm. Thursdays are open as food is available. If you would like to send in a donation, our mailing address is PO Box 1373, Pinetop, AZ 85935. We hope to end hunger one day so that no one has to go to bed wondering when their next meal is coming. Until then we have an open door policy and welcome anyone. Lynn Lewis, Love Kitchen Director June 2019
