Buffalo Bill Here at Buffalo Bills Tavern and grill you will move backward in time to the exciting days of the wild wild west. During buffalo bills lifetime, he was a wagon master, stage coach driver, pony express rider, cavalry scout, Indian fighter, buffalo hunter and finally show man supreme. For almost 50 years he was the genuine hero of every American, friend of presidents, kings and statesmen. We tried to re-capture for you some of the feeling of his era. It is a privilege for us to represent such a great visionary as W.F. “Buffalo Bill Cody who made indelible imprint on American culture. He was the right man at the right place, at the right time and set the mold for modern American celebrity. Smart, ambitious and creative, he showed what it took to become larger than life. We sincerely hope you enjoy buffalo bills and come back often. Gary Martinson, Owner of Buffalo Bills Tavern & Grill

BBTG

9 months ago I made a permanent move to the White Mountains. I was directed to look at restaurants in Lakeside & Pinetop to find more upscale places to work. After exhausting the prospects in that area, I came across Buffalo Bill’s Tavern & Grill. Work started for me at the end of July then I took over as Executive Chef in October. This venue had all the right things. A great owner in Gary Martinson & an excellent general manager in Deb Fink. BBTG possessed all the components that make for a

successful food venture, atmosphere, décor & the makings of a great menu, one that I felt I could absorb & refine. BBTG has a menu variety not seen in the White Mountains. It boasts décor & atmosphere that is singularly unique, including a collection of western memorabilia rarely seen & available for the public to experience. In my three plus decades of being in this industry, I have never been part of a team that I enjoy working with or respect as much as I do in my present position. BBTG is on a path to host the most comfortable & enjoyable eating & drinking experience in the White Mountains. As Executive Chef it is my job to flex my culinary muscle, not competitively but in an artistic display as to make sure that all of our guests are fully satisfied when partaking in our dining & drinking event. We are on our way. Stay tuned. Barclay Thompson, Executive Chef, BBTG

Golf Tips It’s spring in the White Mountains and that means the golf courses are open and the wind is going to blow. Here are a few tips to help you play in the wind. When it’s Breezy Swing Easy When the wind picks up you want to choose a club that is more than what you would normally choose. Go through your normal pre-shot routine and then swing easy. The windier it gets the easier you should swing. You should find that your golf ball has more of a boring flight through the wind and not ballooning up. Extra spin is generated when the player excellerates to quickly through the impact zone & spin is your enemy while playing in gusty conditions. Take Full Advantage of Swinging Down Wind You want to take every advantage of down wind conditions. Here are the keys: 1. Tee the ball about a inch higher. 2. Move the ball 1 inch up in your stance. 3. Swing easy and be patient.

but when done right, you will hit it longer than ever, and say this a bit more often “You’re away.” The most important part of the game is putting. Here are the Tools for Better Putting. A carpenter’s chalk-line and a CD disc are great putting aids to have in your golf bag. The chalkline is useful to help you with your alignment and stroke. Find a straight six to ten foot putt on a practice green. Snap a chalk-line from the hole back to the desired distance. Put a ball on line and make sure your putter and body are lined up properly. Try to roll the putt right up the chalk-line. Use the CD as a mirror. Lay the disc on the green and place a ball in the hole. Take your stance until your eyes are either directly over the or just inside. I hope these tips will help you be a better golfer. Come up this summer and enjoy the weather. With all the wet weather this winter the lakes are full and the golf courses are going to be in the best shape that they have ever been. Thanks, Ron Fett Head Golf Professional Silver Creek Golf Club (928)5372744

Moving the ball up means that it will take a longer period of time to get to the ball. Again be Patient!! What you will find is that you are hitting up more on the ball thus launching it higher with less spin. Tee it high, Hit it Long! Do you have one of the new large headed drivers? So you can launch it nice and high, tee the ball higher and further forward in your stance. This will allow you to catch the ball on the up swing and launch the ball. This is very important now because the new balls do not spin as much, 10 Estrella Publishing - Bison Living Magazine

Fool Hollow Lake is the hidden jewel of the White Mountains. This Arizona State operated recreation area sits at 6300 feet elevation and boasts peaceful sunrises, bustling activities during the day, and a spectacular show of colors reflecting off the water during the evening sunsets. Protect Your Nest A Vacant Home is a Vulnerable Home

If you own a home, you know that there are periods of time when your home will be unoccupied, typically when you leave for a family vacation. However, if you have a second home, that property may be unoccupied for much longer periods of time, maybe as much as a several months. Simply locking the door and relying on a busy neighbor to check on your home from time to time is not the best way protect your investment. Quite frankly, it could lead to serious damage to or loss of your home as a result of storms, fire, theft or pests. Before leaving your property vacant, there are a number of precautions you can take to protect your home. One of the easiest solutions is to hire a professional home watch service. There are a number of scenarios that can lead to property damage. Below are the three most common issues.

working during your time away and you come back to a rancid smelling, damaged home. Faulty or old wiring can lead to fires. Power surges can cause appliances to fail resulting in problems ranging from flooding to home security systems going down. 3. Pest Intrusion and Infestation Pest intrusions are a common problem. Being close to nature can have many advantages, but pests are definitely one of its major challenges. If your home is not properly secured when unattended, these animals can find their way into your home and take up residence. If they start breeding, their populations will grow and the problem can become quite costly to contain. Having a home watch professional on duty can mean the difference between detecting a problem early and avoiding damage entirely, or taking the risk of leaving your home unprotected.

1. Storm Damage Storms can produce heavy rain and strong winds that can damage your home. Strong winds can result in flying objects and downed tree branches damaging windows and roofs. Flooding can result in serious property damage and loss of precious belongings. Often, as a result of storms, small problems turn into catastrophic disasters. For example, a small roof leak can become a major source of damage in a short period of time. While not all storm damage can be avoided, there are many steps that can be taken to prevent or minimize damage. 2. Faulty Electrical Systems and Failed Appliances Imagine leaving your home for a few weeks in the summer. You lock up and are on your merry way, but unknown to you, the air conditioner stops 12 Estrella Publishing - Bison Living Magazine

Local Attractions Welcome to the Show Low Historical Society Museum, a community oriented museum.

The museum is comprised of two buildings. The west wing was originally a sporting goods store built in early 1960’s, and in use until the City of Show Low purchased the building in the early 1970’s for their police department and city hall. In 1994 the Show Low Historical Society acquired the building for use as a museum, with a labor of love attitude, the rooms were created, and the museum opened in 1995. The east wing was Navajo County Justice Court and Planning & Zoning department. In 2007 the museum acquired the east wing. With this expansion the museum now consists of 17 different themed rooms totaling over 6,000 square feet of display area for exhibits.

Silver Creek Railroaders Club and the museum have a gentlemen’s partnership with the creation of “The Last Train to Maverick” railroad exhibit on a HO scale. This exhibit began in 2008 and is housed in the old court room of the museum. The exhibit continues to grow with each new season to the delight of thousands of visitors throughout the year. All of our individual rooms have their own unique story to tell. To name a few: pioneer families, Black Smith Shop, Artifact Gallery, Post Office, Military Memorial, Show Low’s early businesses, Ranchers Hall of Fame, and the jail. We left the police department holding jail cell as it was when the police department relocated in 1994. Our visitors are fascinated by the contents of this exhibit, and just maybe you will feel our resident ghost as he observes from the other side. The Show Low Museum is host to community clubs, Creative Crafters on Wednesday mornings, and the Regal Wood Carvers on Thursday morning. These groups are open to the public at no charge. We offer guided tours to large groups with an advanced notice. The Show Low Museum is a fun, fascinating educational experience. We enjoy sharing our history with you; our mission is to make your visit a memorable one. Our hours of operation are: Wednesday through Saturday 10 to 3. Phone 928-532-7115. www.showlowmuseum.com We look forward to seeing you soon.

Be Bear Aware Being outdoors means being with wildlife. Many people never encounter a bear. But if you do, here’s some simple advice:

DO NOT RUN. Remain calm. Group together and pick up small children. Continue to face the bear and back away slowly, talking calmly to identify yourself as a human. If the bear continues to approach, try to scare it away by making yourself as large and imposing as possible by stretching your arms overhead and making loud noises. Carry and know how to use bear spray, which is available at many outdoor retailers and can be used to deter a charging bear. Food Storage Bears are always searching for food. Bears are curious, intelligent animals that have great memories. Their eyesight is similar to humans and their sense of smell is seven times more powerful than a blood hound’s, enabling them to smell food from miles away.

sources like favorite berry patches, decaying logs swarming with delectable insects, and streams and rivers teeming with fish that provide much needed fat and protein.

But bears also remember human packs, campsites, and dwellings offer tempting options. While bears are attracted to any edible food, they also might try to feast on items we might not consider edible: toothpaste shampoo lotion soap cooking utensils empty cans wrappers coolers pet food bird seed garbage petroleum products (including fuel)

Food storage lockers are provided at many campsites and should be used at all times to store attractants. Those are the very traits that can sometimes get them – and us – into trouble. Most bears are wary of humans and try to avoid them. However, bears can learn to associate people with food and be tenacious in their pursuit of something to eat. Even if humans are around. Everyone in bear country must do our part to store food and other attractants in bear-resistant containers at all times, and dispose of trash in bear-resistant dumpsters. Bears remember and recognize familiar food 18 Estrella Publishing - Bison Living Magazine

If you see a bear, maintain a safe distance and alter your route to avoid the bear. Never block a bear’s travel route. If you see a cub alone, don’t approach. Momma bear could be nearby. Camping in Bear Country

Hiking in Bear Country Do not feed bears or other wildlife. Visit or call the local Forest Service office to learn about special requirements or guidelines for the area. Let someone know where you are going and when you plan to return. Read all signs at trailheads. Stay alert, do not wear headphones and cautiously approach any blind corners in the trail. Carry bear spray such that it is easily accessible. Know how to use it. Hike as a group, keep children with you and dogs leashed. Make plenty of noise. For extended trips, keep food and other attractants in personal use size bear resistant containers.

Do not feed bears or other wildlife. Visit or call the local Forest Service office to learn about special requirements or guidelines for properly storing food while camping in the area. Keep a clean camp site. Do not store food or any scented items in a tent, including clothing with food residues. Do not leave food unattended at a campsite or in your vehicle. Use bear-resistant food lockers and dumpsters where provided or bring your own. Clean utensils and food prep area thoroughly after cooking. Do not store garbage at camp site. Use a designated dumpster. At an undeveloped camping location, cook and store food away from sleeping area. Remember: You are responsible for your own safety and for the safety of those around you.
