Public Service Recognition Week This week marks the Town’s annual celebration of Public Service Recognition Week (May 4 – 10). Public Service Recognition Week is a time set aside to honor the people who serve our nation as federal, state, county, local and tribal government employees. The goals of this program are to: Connect and educate citizens nationwide to the work of their government; Improve the perception and morale of public servants; and Help inspire a new generation of public servants.

I am grateful for the talented and committed individuals that have decided to enter public service and work for the Town government. Our employees are our single most important asset in providing high-quality service to all members of our community and achieving the objectives established by the Town Board. 2025 Parking Permits And Map Now available Parking permits for the 2025 summer season are now available for registration and/or purchase. The 2025 paid parking season is effective from Friday, May 23, through Sunday, Oct. 19. Parking permit options are below, and the complete listing of all 2025 permit offerings and registration information can be found at www.estes.org/parking.

Renewal of Local 120 Minutes Free: Current Local Permit holders (residents of the Estes Park R3 School District who registered in 2024 or before) were automatically renewed for 2025 and should receive a confirmation email from The Car Park in early May. This email contains instructions on how to manage your permit, vehicle, and contact details. Current Local Permit holders do not need to take action unless they have changed vehicles, would like to add a new vehicle to their account, or have a different license plate. Permits continue to be issued based on license plate numbers, so windshield stickers are no longer issued or needed.

Local 120 Minutes Free (New Registration): This free permit is available to anyone residing in the Estes Park R3 School District. Register by contacting The Car Park local team at epinfo@thecarpark.com or 970-591-2577. Online registration for this permit will be available on May 9.

Employee Convenience: Anyone who owns a business or property and/or works downtown is eligible to purchase this permit. Annual fee: $40 per permit Overnight Permit: Downtown Resident:

Available to those who live downtown and do not have access to private parking. Annual fee: $35 per permit Overnight Permit: Downtown Rental Unit/Commercial Lodging: Available to those who own, operate or manage a rental unit/hotel room/lodging property downtown and do not have access to private parking for their guests. Annual fee: $40 per permit Volunteer: This free permit is available to any business, organization or governmental entity that offers uncompensated employment or volunteer opportunities in the downtown core. Vehicles displaying a valid Americans with Disabilities Act, Purple Heart, or Disabled Veteran placard or license plate always park without a permit for free, in any available space.

Daily parking rates in the eight paid parking areas are $2 per hour, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Parking is always free in the Estes Park Visitor Center parking structure at 691 N. St. Vrain/US 36; in 11 parking areas located throughout the downtown core; and in all parking areas during the hours before 10 a.m. and after 5 p.m.

Unofficial Election Results For Park Hospital District Announced On Tuesday, May 6, voters were asked to elect two officers to the Board of Directors of the Park Hospital District, which operates Estes Park Health, for four-year terms.

Five self-nominated candidates were on the ballot: Max Salfinger, Thomas E. Leigh, Tim Cashman, Ralph Strickland and Janet E. Zeschin.

The unofficial results show Thomas E. Leigh and Janet E. Zeschin were elected to fill the two open positions, which are being vacated by David Batey, who is term limited, and Drew Webb, who has

decided not to run for re-election.

Leigh received 1,189 votes while Zeschin received 1,043 votes. The other results included 597 votes for Salfinger, 547 votes for Cashman and 142 votes for Strickland.

Election results will be certified by the Election Canvas Board on May 20, after the deadline for receipt of ballots from Uniformed and Overseas Citizens Absentee voting Act (UOCAVA) voters.

The newly elected Directors will be sworn in at the May 28 Park Hospital District Board Meeting.

The charge(s) are merely an accusation and the defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.

On April 28 at 12:32 p.m. police contacted a 31 year old female in the 100

block of E. Elkhorn Ave. who was wanted on two warrants for misdemeanor offenses. She was arrested and transported to the Larimer County Jail.

EVFPD firefighters generally respond to medical calls in their personal vehicles, allowing for a faster response. On other incidents, firefighters respond to a fire station to respond in department apparatus with specialized equipment.

During the week of April 27th, 2025, the Estes Valley Fire Protection District (EVFPD) responded to eight calls for service. This included:

Town Of Estes Park Offers Food Tax Refunds To Qualified Residents During May 2025 Each year, the Town of Estes Park offers refunds of sales tax paid on food items to qualified residents.

Applicants must have lived within the boundaries of the Estes Valley Recreation and Park District during the entire 12 months of 2024. Applicants should be resident families with dependent children under the age of 18 in 2024; residents who are disabled and received disability income in 2024; or, residents who were at least 65 years of age in 2024. Income qualifications and complete details will be available at www.estes.org/finance.

Food tax refund applications will be

available starting May 1, 2025, in the vestibule outside the Police Department entrance at Town Hall, 170 MacGregor Ave., from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday, and at www.estes.org/finance. Applications will be accepted through May 30, 2025. Along with the completed application, certain applicants must provide copies of proof of residency and income, and any other required documents. The requirements are explained in the application.

New Affordable Homes Coming To Estes Park: Habitat Breaks Ground On Raven Community

Annual Striping On Town Streets Begins May 19 From approximately May 19 through June 6, the Town of Estes Park and its contractor will be repainting curbs, crosswalks, thermoplastic symbols, and centerlines on Town-owned roadways.

Moving lane closures will be necessary during painting. Motorists are advised to drive with caution in the areas where crews are working. Signs will be posted to identify areas of wet paint.

The date range for this annual project may be revised due to weather conditions.

Crack Seal: Previously scheduled for July, crack sealing various Town streets will tentatively take place the week of May 12 and is expected to last 2-3 days.

These surface treatments will involve moving lane closures and are not expected to result in any full road closures.

Habitat for Humanity of the St. Vrain Valley has officially broken ground on our Raven Avenue neighborhood, a new build of five affordable homes on Raven Avenue in Estes Park.

Designed with sustainability and family needs in mind, the three- and four-bedroom homes will be sold to qualifying local families earning below 80% of the Area Median Income. Buyers contribute 250–500 hours of "sweat equity" as part of Habitat's unique partnership model.

"This build represents years of work to get to this point, as we have had this piece of land under contract since 2011.

Significant engineering and other work began in 2019, and we are so pleased to be able to invite volunteers to this build. said David Emerson, Executive Director of St. Vrain Habitat.

Construction is underway now, with the whole neighborhood expected to be

completed by 2028. Volunteer opportunities begin this summer, and the next round of homeowner applications will open later this year.

From Myth To Reality: Wolves In Modern Ecosystems Symposium Presented By The Estes Valley Watershed Coalition The Estes Valley Watershed Coalition invites the public to attend their annual symposium, From Myth to Reality: Wolves in Modern Ecosystems.

The wolf is native to Colorado but was eradicated from the state by the mid1940s. In December 2023, Colorado Parks and Wildlife released 10 wolves from Oregon in both Grand and Summit Counties An additional 15 wolves from Canada were reintroduced in January 2025 in Eagle and Pitkin Counties.

Since the wolf reintroduction to Colorado, there has been considerable interest as well as numerous questions and concerns.

The From Myth to Reality: Wolves in Modern Ecosystem symposium will be comprised of industry leading experts, including: • Dr. Doug Smith, Retired Biologist, Yellowstone National Park • Dr. Joanna Lambert, CU Boulder • Dr. Stewart Breck, USDA and National Wildlife Research Center • William Deacy, PhD, Rocky Mountain National Park • Eric Odell, Colorado Parks and Wildlife • Ryan Sedgeley, Endangered Species Coalition

The panelists will discuss the wolf reintroduction efforts and other relevant information in detail. In addition, there will be a Question and Answer session where audience questions and concerns will be answered and addressed.

This event will take place on Saturday, May 10 from 1:00-5:00 p.m. at the Estes Valley Community Center Lower Level at 600 Community Drive in Estes Park, Colorado.

What Is The Quota Loan Closet Estes Park Quota, as a service to our community, opened the Medical Equipment Loan Closet in 1952 with a walker, a cane and a wheelchair and the volunteers worked out of a member’s home.

That first year the Loan Closet served 27 people. The Loan Closet now has over 624 pieces of medical equipment valued at almost $100,000.00, available for loan to all of Estes Valley and our visitors.

Since the 1980s, the Quota Loan Closet has been housed on Estes Park Health property. Staffing for Loan Closet is done totally through the volunteer ef-

forts of 14 Quota members who are available to check out or accept returns of equipment seven days a week.

In 2023, 258 individuals checked out 475 pieces of equipment. Quota is a non-profit organization so the service is free with a refundable deposit and/or donation. The funds donated support the repairs and replacement of our equipment. epnews.com My morning ritual starts with a beeline to the kitchen where my coffeemaker awaits. I prep her the night before with water and freshly ground beans so in the morning all I have to do is hit the “on” switch. While I wait for her to wake up and greet the day I put away the dishes left drying on the rack after last night’s dinner and listen to the trickle of water drip into the pot. Then I hear a couple of sputters and a hiss and I know the job is done. Within mere minutes the nectar of the gods is brewed to my exact liking. I pour a cup, take a sip— oh, that first exhilarating, sweet/bitter sip—and the day begins.

My Braun coffeemaker is close to 30 years old and is as basic as a coffeemaker can get. It has an on/off switch. Period. No nonsense. Inexpensive. Fast. The old gal and I have been friends for decades. She understands how I like my coffee and I know how she brews. I admit unabashedly that I love her. Well, I loved her—past tense.

Two weeks ago, something about my coffee companion sounded off. I can’t say exactly what was wrong, but after spending nearly every morning for 30 years together, I could tell my old friend wasn’t herself. I looked to see if the coffee was flowing into the pot and just about the time I realized it wasn’t, there was a flash and a poof from under the machine, and then she gave up the ghost. Just like that.

What a way to go! (I hope I am so lucky.) I drank the last cup she made for me, salted with my tears.

My affiliate Joe and I left the next day for a week-long trip so I didn’t miss my dear coffeemaker but now we’re back and I’ve been hand-pouring hot water through my camp filter for my morning joe. It’s not ideal, especially when it comes time for the second cup. Instead of runneth over the filter becomes cloggethed up.

The coffeemaker replacement challenge has begun.

What I really want is a 10-cup coffeemaker just like the one I had.

Sadly, she is irreplaceable.

Coffee makers just ain’t what they used to be. I have searched for a basic

machine with nothing but an on/off switch.

But there’s a catch: I am a bargain shopper and I won’t pay a premium for a bare-bones coffeemaker.

Plus, I want one that uses the cone filters, which makes a darker, richer, more intense cup of coffee compared to the basket filters. Ok, I admit, I’m “selective,” which makes this challenge a tad more—challenging.

I’ve been to thrift shops, but somebody else’s coffeemaker simply can’t be cleaned up enough to be appealing to a buyer with discretion. Big box stores offer a wide variety of machines which feature built-in grinders, thermal carafes, settings for temperature and adjustable brew strength, digital clocks with the option for 12-hr or 24-hr display, programmable brew time, the pause-and-pour feature, the ability to carry on complete conversations with Alexa, voice-to-brew controls, built-in WiFi, and SmartHQ which allows users to connect, control, and manage their coffee-making from anywhere.

But I don’t want any of that. I just want a cup of coffee.

I broke down and turned to online shopping as a last resort. But whenever I shop online, which isn’t often, I muff my search by looking at one-star reviews. Every single item for sale online gets some bad ratings. Naturally, I need to see what they say. When I read them, I am convinced the product I’m looking at is the cheapest piece of junk ever made. Ergo, I don’t buy much online. Besides, with the plethora of options available on the web, I get overwhelmed and cannot narrow my choice down to only one. The entire online shopping experience wears me out. That’s when I really need a jolt of java.

I have confidence I’ll find what I’m looking for. It will just take time and patience. Meanwhile, my morning routine will involve hand-pouring hot water through my camp filter, one cup at a time. No on/off switch necessary.

Scholarships, Shredding, Recycling: How Are They Related?

Education is one of the six pillars of Rotary, and we take it very seriously.

At this time of year, the Rotary Club of Estes Park Scholarship Committee is working diligently to select candidates for our 2025 scholarships. We are reading student applications, interviewing applicants, evaluating who will receive our scholarships, and determining what funding is available.

Last year, thanks to careful investing, vigorous fundraising, and hardworking volunteers, we gave $55,500 to help our local students further their dreams and aspirations by going to college or attending trade school.

How does this relate to shredding?

The Shredathon, which Rotary sponsors with the League of Women Voters recycling committee, is one of our top fundraisers supporting the scholarship fund. Rotarians provide the shred truck, volunteer to move shredding materials from your car to the truck, and help direct traffic.

For this effort, we charge half the price of commercial shredders ($15 for a 30-pound box versus $1/pound), and all of this money goes into our scholarship program. All shredding occurs on-site for additional security for your private documents, and all material is recycled. We consider this a win-win project!

Aviation Club To Hear From Local Computer Flight Simulation Guru The Estes Park Aviation Club meeting this month will take place on Wednesday, May 14, at the newly renovated American Legion. We will meet informally at 5:30 p.m. for optional food and drink from the Duncan's Diner expanded menu, a great time to socialize and swap flying stories.

The meeting and program will begin at 6:30 p.m.

Our presentation will be about Computer Flight Simulation. Our speaker is Mike Davis, a local resident and new member of our organization, who is a selfdescribed "Computer Flight Simulator fanatic since the mid-1970s." Although not a licensed pilot, Mike regularly "flies" his computer all over the country, and even the world. He has some 90 different types of aircraft loaded into his system and can

"fly" trips in many varied conditions, or even in real time weather scenarios.

Mike Davis is a forensic chemist by trade, a CSI before the TV series, who retired from the Missouri State Highway Patrol Crime Lab, Carthage, Missouri in 2010. He also served as a deputy sheriff on weekends for 20 years with the Newton County Sheriff 's Department. Mike volunteers several times a week in the RMNP, and he and his wife have lived full time here in Estes Park for five years.

The public is invited as usual to join us for a fascinating exploration of the world of flight simulation. The American Legion is at 850 N. St. Vrain Ave. The meeting and program begin at 6:30 after an hour of social time, food, and drink.

22nd Annual Nan Ryan Invitational Golf Tournament

Now is the time to sign up for the 22nd annual Nan Ryan Invitational golf tournament, Saturday, July 26, 2025, at the 9-hole Lake Estes course.

Tee off between 7:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. Entry fee of $30 for passholders and $45 for non-passholders includes 9-hole greens fees, tournament fee, a $20 Gift Certificate from Hunter’s Chophouse, fruit and snacks, prizes for winning teams in all divisions and for special events, and a gift for each player.

All proceeds from the tournament benefit the Estes Park Junior Golf Program. Last year the tournament raised a record $11,000, bringing the total raised by the tournament through the years to $75,455!

Turkeys - A Beautiful Bird

By: Brad Manard My wife, Carolyn, loves images of moose and elk, big, dynamic ungulates.

When I began doing more bird photography, she asked, “Why?” As the images I captured improved in detail, she began to appreciate eagles, osprey, and redtailed hawks. She liked the predator birds. But when I began capturing shot after shot of turkeys, she drew the line.

Carolyn asked me, “Have you looked at their heads, those ugly lumps and bumps of red and blue? They’re like a bruised gravel pit with eyes.” Laughing, I countered with, “A beautiful blend of deep red and aqua blue. Plus, look at the details of their feathers and the way when the sun hits them, they glow like a prism of colors.” She responded with, “Prism of

colors with an ugly head.”

Still, I think turkeys are such a unique and beautiful bird. In the spring, when the tom’s fluff up, they show a fascinating strut as if a bold ball of intricately detailed feathers. “What female would not be attracted?” I asked my wife. Carolyn clearly stated, “This female.”

I was watching several Merriam’s turkeys, five toms and even more hens near a parking area in RMNP. As the females moved in a general direction pecking slight grains of food from the ground, the toms weaved, running like Pac-Man never knowing exactly which direction to go.

Lost in their own testosterone, they would fluff up becoming round and twice their size, their chests showing a

bold tuft of feathers known as their beard. Standing on the edge of a parking lot, I squatted, setting my camera at the turkey’s eye level, pressing the shutter, the sun reflecting that debatable prism in their feathers.

It happened like it sometimes does with nature photography. Not such an issue with turkey’s, but I was focusing with my vision on the two turkeys through the viewfinder, and lost track of my surroundings. When I lowered my camera, I realized I had become a curiosity to the other toms.

In front of me, now about six feet away were the males I’d been photographing. Beside and behind me, within four feet were the other three toms. I was surrounded by gobblers. I thought this might be the beginning of a Thanksgiving revenge massacre. Which one would get my leg?

But their aggressiveness stopped there. They gobbled a bit as if to warn me to stay put, so I squatted, turning my camera on their “ugly” heads. From there, I took several close-ups for Carolyn to admire. The toms kept fluffing and dancing, and I kept shooting and capturing the details of their bumpy red and blue caruncles, the snood over their beaks, and the wattle hanging from their chins.

As they moved up into the grass following the hens, I walked around to the far side positioning myself fifty feet in front of them. The hens moved steadily in the same direction while the toms continued their losing Pac-Man imitation. Sometimes they moved in pairs, sometimes offering an outstretched neck or a flapping of their wings.

I loved the way they entertained, their

bold strut and goofy wandering. The lumpy red and aqua heads moved in jerky motions and the sun reflected the prism of blues, reds, and greens of their puffed up black chests. The brown tail feathers were to be admired with their cream color tips highlighting the full fan of their plumage.

I was excited that I had captured so many wonderful turkey images. They had posed and played, danced and strutted for the camera, and I was grateful. With that enthusiasm, when I arrived home, I announced, “Carolyn, look at these amazing images I captured.” When I showed her a close-up of a dynamic male turkey in his full red and blue caruncles, snood, and wattle, she turned away bluntly saying, “Oh my God. They’re ugly turkeys.”

But I think they are beautiful.

1839 Awards Honors Deena Sveinsson In Its 2025 Color Photography Contest

Local conservation and wildlife photographer Deena Sveinsson has been recognized for her photograph, “The Fast and the Furriest,” in the 1839 Awards Color Photography Contest.

The winners were selected by an esteemed panel of industry Judges from the Whitney Museum of American Art, Vanity Fair, Dwell, Artsy, the University of Zurich, and other notable organizations.

The photograph received a Silver Medal in the Animals Category. In addition, she received an Honorable Mention in the Nature Category.

Deena’s photograph shows the playful nature of moose. Often considered to be dangerous and aggressive animals, Deena’s unique photograph shows that moose are gentle giants with playful spirits and individual personalities.

Deena Sveinsson has lived in Estes Park for over 20 years. An airline pilot turned award winning photographer, Deena can be seen almost daily trying to find unique ways of photographing the wildlife in Rocky Mountain National Park and in the many mountainous areas of Colorado.

Employee Spotlight: Patricia Gautier Owen – Estes Valley Community Center

After retiring to Estes Park in 2017, Patricia Gautier Owen embraced her lifelong passion for fitness, health, and dance by joining the Estes Valley Community Center as a Zumba™ instructor

when the facility first opened. Her role has allowed her to build meaningful connections with participants, tailor classes to individual needs, and help everyone feel welcome and supported.

Since then, Patricia has expanded her teaching repertoire to include a variety of classes such as SilverSneakers™, Pilates, and Strength Training. Reflecting on her work, she shared, “I believe our biggest challenge is attracting more members so we can showcase the health benefits our classes offer at the Rec!” Patricia feels honored to be part of the dedicated team of instructors at the Community Center. “My job at the Community Center has transformed my retirement life beyond all expectations—this is an amazing experience!” she said.

DAR Donates Books To EPES Library th

July 2026 the US will mark the 250 anniversary of our nation. The Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) has already started celebrating by donating books on the American Revolution to the Estes Park Elementary School Library. These books will help the students and faculty prepare for our 250th anniversary next July.

Two book bags were donated by the Longs Peak Chapter of DAR. Leslie Brinkley Retent, our State Regent, created this project and it was part of a national grant, Celebrate America 250.

Estes Park Health And UCHealth Partnership Moving Forward

The Park Hospital District (PHD) Board of Directors has scheduled two special board meetings to provide residents of the Estes Valley with updates on the partnership EPH is pursuing with UCHealth.

During the first meeting, scheduled for Thursday, May 8, 2025 at 5:30 p.m. at the Estes Park Town Hall, the PHD Board of Directors will introduce a resolution to approve the agreements that will allow EPH to join UCHealth. During this meeting, directors will share

• Contracts for EPH physicians and advanced practice providers will transition to UCHealth, allowing providers to continue seeing patients in the valley.

• At the PHD board’s request, the name of the hospital will transition to UCHealth Estes Valley Medical Center to reflect the care provided for the entire valley.

Chorale Sings “Love Notes” Part 2

Please don’t miss “Love Notes,” the Estes Park Chorale’s spring concert, at 2 p.m. Saturday, May 10. The Presbyterian Community Church of the Rockies is the venue for this happy, peaceful and uplifting collection of vocal music numbers, inspired by Greek definitions of love. In this uncertain time in history, love is truly the emotion that binds us together in unity.

Tickets are $10.00 and are available from any chorus member, the Macdonald Book Shop or at the door. The Chorale is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization, and donations are always welcome to support our musical efforts every year.

Denise Stookesberry is the artistic director completing her ninth year with the Chorale. She brings vast enthusiasm and commitment to inspire a growing membership of over 50 men and women in song.

Michelle Gergen-Wisner as our accompanist is absolutely necessary to our success. She keeps us together, in tune, in time and helps bring success to rehearsals and, of course, in the performance of the concert itself. Hours of her own practice time is evident in her expertise and devotion to excellence.

Let’s be sure to recognize Steve Tice, as our narrator. His script will introduce the various numbers and provide special perspective to the divergent types of love in the world.

The second half of the concert begins with “Fly Away Home,” with words and music by Pinkzebra. No, nobody knows who Pinkzebra is, but he is a prolific producer and composer of a vast array of upbeat and uplifting different vocal and orchestral songs. In the “Storge” or family type of love, “Fly Away Home” explores the world and life experiences, while staying connected with others where you came from. Peace comes from knowing you can always return to home and family.

Another number showing the love of family and home is “Dance For Love,” which inseparably merges the poetry of William Straub’s 1865 Civil War poem with the transparent color palette of the music of Z. Randall Stroope. A soldier who survived the ravages of war, is eagerly turning homeward, dancing his way to beauty and laughter, anticipating a joyful reunion with his beloved Sarah.

Three country music singers, Natalie Hemby, Lori McKenna and Brandi Carlile got together to bring us a contemporary, off-beat and syncopated piece, “Crowded Table.” A special treat is a violin accompaniment by Elizabeth Lanning. Agape is the Greek love style, philosophically illustrating the selfless love that a person feels for strangers and humanity as a whole. “I want a house with a crowded table,” with “a place by the fire for everyone.” “The door is always open, your picture’s on my wall.” There’s a plea here to “take on the world while we’re young and able.” Right?

The Simpatica Ensemble, composed of Miranda Dillard, Anna Weddle, Denise Stookesberry, SteveTice and Nelson Burke, brings the folk song with the universal love theme, “Will the Circle Be Unbroken” to our audience.

Your toes will be tapping and you’ll want to clap and sway along with the singers.

Let’s bring some more universal love in the Agape style with a very recent composition, “All together We Are Love,” words and music by Katerina Gimon. Few of us have ever heard, let alone sung, Aleatoric music, wherein the element of composition is left to chance by the performer. “I am a dreamer, I am a song,” brings random thoughts floating around, sounding like many people talking at the same time. While it’s difficult, unnatural and nearly impossible to perform, let’s see how well we do, OK? Simple, yet profound, and pointedly to today’s world, with Jeff Lindberg as the soloist, “I Choose Love,” should always bring to the forefront of our thoughts that love is necessary when pain, war and a world falling down seem to overwhelm us. Agape, or unconditional universal love, is felt by any person willing to do anything for another. Let’s always “climb to holy ground.”

The concert concludes with a compelling and inspirational arrangement by Mac Huff of “Stand Up,” words and music by Joshuah Campbell and Cynthia Echeumuno-Erivo. From the musical “Harriet,” based on the story of Harriet Tubman, this is a revival of a gospel song and we are delighted to spotlight the clear sparkling tones of Patricia Arias as the soloist. She urgently encourages all of us to “take my people with me to a brand new home.”

Peak To Peak Concert Series Presents Rocky Recorders: Crusades To Contemporary

Journey with our local recorder consort Rocky Recorders as they explore music selections spanning 1000 years!

The versatile recorder instruments will be joined by piano, harpsichord, hammer dulcimer, voice and percussion in a Peak to Peak concert Crusades to Contemporary on Saturday, May 31st.

The concert will be held at 2:00 p.m. at the Shepherd of the Mountains Lutheran Church, 2000 Ptarmigan Trail in Estes Park. A reception will follow the concert to meet the musicians. The Peak to Peak concert series is sponsored by the Oratorio Society of Estes Park.

The performance is free, although donations are gratefully accepted.

The concert will begin with two Crusades-related pieces: Nomen a Solemnibus and Bele Yzabeaus. Nomen a Solemnibus is a song celebrating the liberation of Jerusalem in 1099 in the first Crusade for Christian pilgrims.

Bele Yzabeaus in a French Chanson that over multiple verses describes a young couple, fair Isabel and Gerard, separated when Isabel’s parents married her to a noble. The young man Gerard decides to seek his fortune by joining the Crusades.

Steve Pearson will sing two John Dowland pieces, “Now, O Now, I Must Part” and “His Golden Locks.” John Dowland (1563-1626) was an English Renaissance composer, lutenist and singer.

George Philipp Telemann (16811767) and was a German Baroque composer and multi-instrumentalist.

He is one of the most prolific composers in history and considered by his contemporaries to be one of the leading German composers of the time,

comparing favorably to Johann Sebastian (J. S.) Bach. The consort will perform two Cantatas, “Also Hat Gott die Welt Geliebt” and “Jauchzet ihr Himmel” and two Fantasias, “Fantasia III” and “Fantasia IV.” John Wolf will perform two Preludes and Fugues from J.S. Bach’s Well-Tempered Clavier, Book 1 on piano. The first piece is in B-flat minor and the second is in A-flat major.

The concert will conclude with two contemporary favorites. “A Taste of Honey” is a pop standard written in 1960 by Bobby Scott and Ric Marlow for a Broadway play of the same name.

The original song and a later recording

by Herb Alpert in 1965 earned the song four Grammy awards. “Ashokan Farewell” was composed by the American folk musician Jay Ungar in 1982. For many years it served as the goodnight or farewell waltz at the annual Ashokan Fiddle and Dance Camps run by Ungar and his wife Molly Mason. The tune was used as the title theme of the 1990s PBS documentary series, The Civil War. Concert performers are: Kristi Fjare (recorders), Steve Pearson (recorders, voice), Mark Richardson (recorders), Judy Vasel (hammer dulcimer, percussion), and John Wolf (recorders, harpsichord, piano). The consort performs on sopranino, soprano, alto, tenor and bass recorders. Rocky Recorders and earlier recorder consorts with some of the current members have been playing in Estes Park for over 20 years.

They have performed in Peak to Peak concerts, local events such as the Queen’s Ball in 2023, and in school music demonstrations.

Estes Park Jazz Big Band And Village Band To Perform First Summer Concert The Estes Park Jazz Big Band and Village Band will perform the first concert of their summer season in a combined concert on Mother’s Day, Sunday, May 11. The free concert will begin at 3:00 p.m. in the Estes Park High School Theater.

The Jazz Big Band has been performing for the Estes Park community and its visitors for 33 years while the Village Band has been performing for 43 years.

Chuck Varilek will lead the Jazz Big Band. Conducting duties for the Village Band will be shared

by Melinda Workman and Varilek.

The Jazz Big Band will kick off the concert with a mix of different styles, including Herbie Hancock’s “Cantaloupe Island” and Neal Hefti’s “Li’l Darlin.’ ” Jan McCown will also be a featured vocalist on Cole Porter’s “I’ve Got You Under My Skin.”

After a short intermission to reset the stage, the Village Band will begin their portion of the concert with Varilek on the podium, beginning with music from the film, “Silverado.” Scott Anderson will be featured as vocal soloist on “Nessun Dorma” by Puccini.

Workman will take over the conducting duties on J. S. Bach’s “Prelude And Fugue in F Minor.” Highlights from

“Wicked” will feature several wellknown songs from the musical and the movie.

Varilek will then lead the band on a tribute to Carl Stalling, the composer behind many of the Bugs Bunny cartoons. The tribute,

by Randall Standridge, is titled “Animation: Wabbit!” and evokes the memory of many Bugs Bunny cartoon themes. The Village Band will finish the concert with the John Philip Sousa composition, “Imperial Edward March.”

The Estes Park Jazz Big Band and Estes Park Village Band are community bands made up of adult and high school musicians from the Estes Park area as well as from surrounding communities. New members are always welcome to perform with the band. Rehearsals are on Tuesday evenings in the Estes Park High School bandroom.

The Village Band and Jazz Big Band now have a website (www.estesparkvillageband.com) which contains our summer calendar as well as photos from past performances. The bands are also a 501c3 tax exempt organization.

Add Vibrancy To Your World With This Year’s “Colorful” Summer Reading Program

If you’re like us here at the Estes Valley Library, one of our New Year’s resolutions is to read more, and as we approach the halfway mark of 2025, we’re recommitting to this enjoyable (and beneficial) goal. It’s the perfect time, too, since our annual Summer Reading Program is right around the corner!

Community members of all ages are invited to join the Summer Reading Program, which will begin Thursday, May 22 and continue through the end of July. During those weeks, track your reading online to win prizes for reaching various milestones. Rewards are available for adults, teens, kids, toddlers, and babies.

This year’s theme is “Color Our World.” Embark on a journey of creativity, celebrating the myriad of ways in which art and reading enrich our lives. HONOR TO WHOM HONOR IS DUE…OUR MOTHERS ‘M’ is for the million things she gave me ---is for the mercy she possesses; ‘O’ means that she’s growing old---means that I owe her all I am; ‘T’ is for tears she shed to save me---is for tender, sweet caresses; ‘H’ is for her heart of purest gold---is for her hands that made a home; ‘E’ Is for her eyes with love light shining---everything she’s done for me; ‘R’ means right, and right she’ll always be---means real and regular you see.

Put them all together, they spell ‘Mother’ a word that means the world to me.”

I was about ten years old when Eddie Arnold first sang his tribute to his mother.

About every year since I’ve listened to or sang that tribute to the woman whose picture graces the wall above my desk. Unlike some less fortunate, I can say ‘Amen’ to each of the verses in Eddie’s song. Many years later, I, and my three sisters, sat in a balcony over the entrance of a small mortuary chapel in Livingston, Montana singing songs of joy and heaven as mourners filled the pews for her memorial service. The minister’s first words were: “After hearing these songs, I’m changing what I’ve prepared. No sadness, only joy and heavenly anticipation for our beloved Thelma.” Solomon said, of such women: “Her children arise up and call her blessed, her husband also, and he praises her.” (Prov. 31:28) Before that memorial service for your beloved mother ‘Mothers’ Day’ is a good time to ‘praise her’.

From the heartwarming embrace of a mother’s hug to the gentle guidance of her wisdom, there’s truly no one like the ‘moms’ in our lives. They are the unsung heroes of our lives. Being a mother is a busy, sometime chaotic, and occasionally thankless job, yet they tackle it with the utmost love and grace. As we approach Mother’s Day 2025, it’s time to reflect on their impact on our lives and give them the recognition they deserve.

Mother’s Day is the universal (over one hundred countries) celebration marked by the expression of love, gratitude, and admiration for the women who sacrificed so much to bring us into the world…and raise us. George Washington summed up the contribution of his mother to his life in these words: “My mother was the most beautiful woman I ever saw. All I am I owe to my mother. I attribute my success in life to the moral, intellectual, and physical education I received from her.” William Ross Wallace sums up the impact of mothers on the world in these words: “The hand that rocks the cradle, is the hand that rules the world.” Truly, she steers the course of children’s hearts in their search of values and beliefs.

She is the strength her children turn to, the love they count on, and the inspiration they look to. We’ve seen an athlete celebrate his scoring play by turning to the stands and saying: ‘Hi, Mom’! Why ‘Mom’? We know why! It is estimated that American ‘Moms’ are impacting the lives of 73.1 million children under the age of 18 every year. In the Bible young Timothy’s life was shaped by: “the sincere faith which first lived in his grandmother Lois, and his mother Eunice, and now lives in him also.” (II Tim. 1:5) While celebrations vary from country to country, the sentiment remains the same - to recognize the selfless dedication and unwavering support of mothers everywhere. And that sentiment is expressed in an estimated $31 billion spent on Mother’s Day this year, in cards, flowers, and restaurant visits….it’s the busiest restaurant day of the year. As a result, it’s the third most expensive holiday of the year: after Christmas and the Fourth of July.

Men on Fire Sets Captives Free!

In February, four members of Park Fellowship Church joined with Global Outreach Foundation to minister in Pakistan. While there, they distributed food, shared the Gospel of Jesus Christ, and set four Pakistani families free from the horrible reality of indentured servitude.

Indentured servitude, or debt slavery, is a common system of debt repayment in Pakistan. Those without access to traditional bank financing have no choice but to borrow money from brick factory owners and move their families into brickyard servitude. Christians, already disadvantaged by economic and educational persecutions from Pakistan’s Islamic majority, make up a large population within the brick factories.

Required to meet outlandish quotas of handmade bricks, most never see their debt paid and freedom realized. It’s common for generations to carry the burden of the initial debt. Children and grandchildren remain enslaved without opportunities for education. The cycle of poverty and enslavement continues with freedom becoming increasing impossible.

Some of the missionary team members were part of the Men on Fire brotherhood. They shared their experiences with MOF which meets Saturday’s, 8:00 a.m. at the American Legion. Almost 50 men were in attendance. So moved by the stories, Men on Fire committed to raise $3,500 for securing freedom of a Pakistani

Christian family from indentured servitude.

On April 15, 2025, a family of five was joyously set free! Funds raised by Men on Fire paid off the family’s remaining debt, purchased a rickshaw to begin a new business, and secured a rental home for two years to help the family transition from bondage to freedom.

Describing the family’s relief, Pastor Numan of Light in the Dark Ministries (Pakistan) said, “When the family realized they were free to leave, they were so overwhelmed with joy they kept hugging me and saying ‘thank you’ for over an hour!”

Shannon Coenen, President and Co-Founder of Global Outreach Foundation (GOF) helped facilitate the release with Pastor Numan.

Coenen says, “We all have opportunity to impact lives in a positive way.

Men on Fire, working with GOF, is a perfect example of what can happen when compassionate hearts and the will to act combine. The lives of this Pakistani family will be forever changed due to Men on Fire putting their faith into action!”

The good news of this family’s freedom arrived just as Christians were preparing to celebrate the resurrection of Jesus Christ on Easter Sunday. Luke 4:18 says, “The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me, because He has anointed Me to preach the Gospel to the poor; He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed.”

Social Security COLA Can Sweeten Your Finances If you’re receiving Social Security benefits, you will see some bigger checks in 2025. How can you best take advantage of this increase?

First, here’s some background: Each year, the Social Security Administration adjusts payments based on the rate of inflation. In 2025, this cost-of-living adjustment, or COLA, will be 2.5%.

While this figure is lower than the 3.2% bump for 2024, and significantly lower than the 8.7% increase in 2023, when inflation was much higher, it’s still close to the 20-year average of 2.6%.

The actual dollar amount increase you’ll see will depend, of course, on the size of your regular Social Security payments. In any case, though, you may find that the bigger checks can help you in these areas: • Withdrawals from investment portfolio — Once you retire, you’ll likely have to start tapping into your traditional IRA, 401(k) and other investment accounts. Naturally, your goal is to avoid taking out so much in your early retirement years that you risk running low on money later. A higher Social Security payment may allow you to keep withdrawing the same amount, or possibly even lower your taxable withdrawals. This is especially important when the inevitable market downturns occur — as much as possible, you’ll want to avoid withdrawing money, which essentially means selling taxable investments, when the market is down.

• Cash reserves — It’s generally a good idea for retirees to keep up to 12 months’ worth of portfolio withdrawals in cash, so the money is readily available when you need it, along with another three to six months of spending kept in an emergency fund. Having these reserves available can help you avoid dipping into your long-term tax-

able investments to pay for short-term needs, such as a major car repair or a needed home improvement.

• Debt reduction — If the higher Social Security payments allow you to improve your cash flow, you might be able to pay down some debts, especially those that carry a high interest rate. And lowering your debts, just like building your cash reserves, can help protect you from increasing your withdrawals from your retirement accounts.

In addition to implementing the new COLA, the Social Security Administration is also raising the earnings limit for those reaching their full retirement age, which, for most people, will be between 66 and 67. If you are under your full retirement age for all of 2025, Social Security will deduct $1 in benefits for every $2 you earn above the new limit of $23,400, up from $22,320 in 2024. If you reach your full retirement age in 2025, Social Security will deduct $1 in benefits for every $3 you earn above $62,160, up from $59,520 in 2024.

Starting with the month you reach your full retirement age, you can earn as much as you want without having your benefits reduced. At that point, Social Security will also recalculate your benefit amounts to give you credit for the months you received reduced benefits due to your excess earnings.

And here’s one final COLA-related change: For 2025, the Social Security tax limit will rise to $176,100, up from $168,600 in 2024.

It’s not all that often when a source of your guaranteed income goes up. So, start thinking now about how you can use these COLA changes to improve your financial situation in 2025.

Choices We Have To Make I can hardly believe I retired from Estes Valley Crisis Advocates nine years ago. I’ve done this and that: married a wonderful man, volunteered at Cliffhanger Used Books and the Village Thrift Store, traveled to Ecuador and the Galápagos, driven cross-country to pick up a small trailer in New York and then camped back, officiated my only destination wedding for an adorable couple in South Carolina, contracted COVID once, survived wildfire evacuations twice, started teaching SoulCollage® workshops, visited my son in Toronto several times, and said a sad goodbye to my mom and two mothers-in-law who both had Alzheimer’s. It’s been a wonderful adventure, but something was missing.

Initially, I couldn’t put my finger on it, but then I realized it was community service. So, when asked if I would be interested in facilitating a support group in town, I jumped in with both feet.

Still, my work with Crisis Advocates and Hospice has taught me how to support people in their times of need. We meet on the 2nd and 4th Tuesdays for one and a half hours. confidential, and while it is often tough to discuss the challenges and sadness of Dementia, there is also time to laugh and share the good and sometimes silly moments.

I’ve also started working on another, much more time-consuming project than the support group. Along with a few folks from Estes Park, I’m helping to create a day center for adults with dementia. This center will provide participants with social interaction, music, snacks, quiet time, and fun. Participants can attend for half a day or a full day. It will be safe and secure, allowing caregivers to leave their loved ones knowing they will have plenty of social interaction and enjoyment in a secure environment. Caregivers can use this respite time to run errands, shop, or read a good book. We call it the Estes Dementia Day Center (EDDC) and aim to complete our work by January 2026. We will definitely need that much time, as there is so much to accomplish. My roles include speaking to groups, writing stories and articles, working on the website, collaborating with volunteers, and being part of the team hiring the Executive Director.

Naturally, I anticipate getting involved in many other tasks down the line.

I felt satisfied with my support group and wasn’t thinking about doing anything else when, after a Tuesday group meeting in October, one of the members (I’ll call him Pete) asked if I would consider helping with a new

project he was planning. At that point, the planning was mostly in his head. I said no. I told him that I had worked in a challenging field for the last 17 years, understood how difficult it was to start new non-profits (I ran a capital campaign to purchase a building, which became our safehouse), and was tired, which was entirely true. He accepted my response but asked me twice more over the next few weeks. I declined again. “Even if it is very important?” he asked me. He was a charmer and persistent, and yes, before I knew it, I was working on the project. Even after saying a few more “no’s,” I also agreed to be the first Board President when we opened.

You might be asking yourself, why?

Why would I, deeply immersed in the pleasures of retirement, sign up for something so significant and overwhelming? Here’s my answer: Because it is important. There is no place in our community where individuals with Dementia can go. Caregivers are exhausted from caring for their loved ones 24/7. Since home care is no longer available through Estes Health, private pay for help is the only alternative, which can be very expensive. Many people at this stage of their lives have very little extra in their budgets. There is a wonderful program called SocialMemory Cafe, which occurs monthly at St. Bartholomew's. As wonderful as it is, caregivers are required to attend with their loved ones, so even though it is a lot of fun with games, music, and snacks, caregivers still get no break.

Colorado has other day programs for adults with dementia, but the closest

one for us is in Fort Collins. That can be a difficult drive, especially in winter, which is hardly a relaxing day for the caregiver.

Dementia is not a specific disease; rather, it is a descriptive term for a collection of symptoms arising from several disorders that affect the brain.

Alzheimer's is the most common form of dementia, leading to problems with memory, thinking, and behavior. For the first time this year, over seven million Americans are living with Alzheimer's. While we don’t know exactly how many people in Estes Park have dementia, the demographics of our population suggest it represents a higher percentage than in communities throughout the valley. It’s a good bet that if you don’t have someone in your family with dementia now, you know someone in your circle of friends and neighbors who does.

I still want to relax in my hammock this summer, reading from the pile of books that are waiting patiently for me.

And, I will do some of that. Meanwhile, there’s still plenty of work to do to make Estes Dementia Day Center a reality, so I keep repeating Pete's words: “It is very important, Mary.”

Estes Valley Chamber Singers Celebrate Randell Thompson

On May 20, at 2:00 p.m. the Estes Valley Chamber Singers will be giving their spring concert at the Presbyterian Community Church of the Rockies.

The Singers will be celebrating the 126th anniversary the of Randell Thompson’s birth on the first half of the concert. Thompson (1899-1985) was the leading American composer of choral music in the first part of the 20th century. Known for his Neoclassical style, his music featured simple melodies with strong focus on the text.

The best known of his twenty-four choral works-and most performed-are “Alleluia,” “The Last Words of David,” and “Frostiana;” a set of seven country songs on poems by Robert Frost. The Singers will be performing six of the seven numbers from this work in addition to the “Alleluia” and “The Last Words of David.”

The second part of the concert will feature a wide range of choral pieces beginning with Frank Ticheli’s “Earth

Song.” This song takes us from neoclassical to modern style and although one would think the two cannot go together, interestingly enough the leap is quite successful for it too makes use of a simple, yet beautiful melody supported by exquisite harmonies. “Come to Me” featuring Scott Anderson, tenor soloist, by Dan Forrest is a deeply moving piece and a favorite of the singers.

From there the group reprises two pieces from their performance at the Black History Concert; “Steal Away,” and “We Shall Walk Through the Valley of Peace.” The concert ends with the rousing Shaker song, “Followers of the Lamb.”

This is a concert you won’t want to miss, so mark your calendars now.

That’s Sunday, May 20th at 2:00 p.m. in the sanctuary of the Presbyterian Community Church of the Rockies; 1700 Brodie Avenue. Admission is free but donations are greatly appreciated to defray the cost of music. See you there!

Mental Health Awareness Month Sheds Light On Challenges Faced By Millions Of Americans From children to seniors, all facets of our community face a variety of mental health challenges: anxiety about school – for parents and children; depression; grief after the loss of a loved one; or post-traumatic stress disorder following a life-altering event are just a few of the scenarios that can cause lifealtering mental health concerns.

In data compiled by the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), depression and substance abuse – two of the most common mental health conditions – are estimated to make up 16% of mental health illnesses in adults.

To address these challenges, NAMI designated May as Mental Health Awareness Month to encourage people to take action, raise a voice and help change the conversation around mental health.

And speaking up is an important part of getting help, because you are not alone.

According to NAMI, one in five U.S. adults experience mental illness and one in 20 U.S. adults experience a serious mental health condition. In Estes Park, that would equate to approximately 1,013 people 18 or older who experience some form of mental illness.

For children, NAMI estimates that 17% of youth ages 6 to 17 experience

some form of mental health disorder.

For Estes Park children, that means as many as 100 children feel some form of mental health stressors.

During the course of May, Estes Park Health will provide ideas, suggestions and tips for how you can seek help, find ways to reduce stress and how to identify the warning signs of mental illness.

Since 1949, Mental Health Awareness Month has been a driving force in addressing the challenges faced by millions of Americans living with mental health conditions, including trauma, anxiety and stress.

Estes Park Health Honors Nurses During National Nurses Week About 80 nurses work at Estes Park Health, filling roles in every department from the surgical suite and emergency department to the medical/surgical unit and urgent care.

Nurses serve at the core of the work at the hospital and see patients at every stage of the care continuum. These men and women work in a variety of positions, including certified nursing assistant, license practical nurse, registered nurse and nurse practitioner, each with their own level of education and experience for the level of care they provide.

Some nurses are generalists, but many specialize in specific areas of care, such as surgery, oncology, pediatrics, public health or emergency.

This week – from May 6 to 12 – Estes Park Health recognizes all levels of nursing care within our facilities as we celebrate this historic event.

“Estes Park Health couldn’t operate without the dedicated nursing staff,” said Pat Samples, Chief Nursing Officer for EPH. “They work tirelessly night and day to make sure patients are comfortable while providing quality care to manage physical needs, prevent illness and treat health conditions.”

In 1953, the first effort to establish a

Nurse’s Day took place when Dorothy Sutherland, an employee at the U.S. Department of Health, Education and Welfare, proposed a Nurse’s Day to President Eisenhower, but the proclamation never came to fruition.

The following year, a National Nurse Week was observed to mark the 100th anniversary of Florence Nightingale’s mission to fight for nursing and medical care reforms for British soldiers during the Crimean War. Attempts were made for the next two decades to establish a National Nurse’s Day; none ever passed through the U.S. legislation.

Then, in 1974, the International Council of Nurses declared May 12 as International Nurses Day, a date selected because it was Nightingale’s birthday. President Richard Nixon also proclaimed a National Nurse Week that year.

Individual organizations and states continued to promote their own recognition of nurses, including the American Nurses Association (ANA), which declared May 6 as National Nurses Day. In 1990, the ANA extended the celebration to a week between May 6 and May 12. The week became official in

Visit The May 2025 Safety Fair For Family Fun And Education Kids and adults are invited to the annual Estes Park Public Safety Fair on Saturday, May 10, sponsored by the Estes Park Police Department. This fun, family event takes place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Estes Park Event Center Complex located at 1125 Rooftop Way. Estes Park Police Officers will be serving free hamburgers, hot dogs, snacks, and beverages, donated by local businesses, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. for all attendees.

More than 20 regional public safety agencies will converge on Estes Park for the Safety Fair, bringing equipment and apparatus ranging from SWAT vehicles to medical evacuation helicopters, to dive rescue apparatus and more. Agency representatives will be on hand for demonstrations and to answer any questions attendees may have. Other local agencies currently signed up to participate include the Estes Valley Fire Protection

District, Colorado Parks and Wildlife, Rocky Mountain National Park, the Larimer County Sheriff ’s Office, and many more.

Local businesses have generously donated door prizes, including movie tickets and bowling games. Families can enter to win free giveaways from the Estes Park Police Department. Children can register to win one of multiple bikes to be given away at 1 p.m. There will be

bounce houses and a bike course for kids to play on.

Venture Into The Outdoors For Improved Mental Health “The mountains are calling and I must go,” said naturalist and conservationist John Muir in an 1873 letter to his sister.

Even before numerous studies concluded that time in nature reduces stress and relieves anxiety, Muir recognized the powerful impact time in the outdoors had on a person’s soul.

As Estes Park Health continues to recognize Mental Health Awareness Month, the outdoors can play an important part in how one can overcome daily stress or even more impactful mental health conditions.

No matter how time in the outdoors may be referred – forest bathing, ecotherapy, mindfulness in nature, green time, taking a “nature pill” or a wilder-

ness cure – studies have shown that time spent in nature has a positive impact on mental health. Fresh air, a walk in the woods, sitting by a stream or taking a longer hike can help a person manage stress, improve mood, get focused and increase cognitive function.

A 2019 study published in Frontiers in Psychology demonstrated that spending just 20 minutes in nature helped lower stress hormone levels. The results also concluded that the greatest reduction in cortisol levels, the stress hormone studied, happened after 20 to 30 minutes in nature.

In a place like Estes Park, where the sun shines about 278 days a year, spending 20 minutes outdoors can be as simple as walking around your neighborhood. Elk roam the streets,

deer feed in the grassy areas and birds abound throughout the summer, and just about every area of town has stunning views of mountains and ridges.

A longer walk along a path like the Lake Estes Trail or the Fish Creek Trail in town, where a portion of the trail can be easily accomplished without completing the full loop, provides an excellent option for a walk at lunch to break up a day at work.

To start the day off right, venture into Rocky Mountain National Park before work or first thing in the morning. The temperatures are cooler and the crowds don’t build until a little later in the morning, providing a quiet, peaceful experience along some of the 350 miles of trails. Start exploring about 20-30 minutes before sunrise and the morning light might reveal a stunning scene of color bathed across the mountains that can help set a positive tone for the day.

Although carving out time to venture outdoors any time of day has positive benefits on mental health, mornings can be particularly beneficial by boosting energy throughout the day, can improve mental clarity and helps to start the day with a positive outlook. Checking off the physical activity goal for the day also gives a sense of accomplishment right out of the gate.

As mental health affects one person, it also can have an impact beyond the individual, including families, communities and coworkers. The same impact happens to those around you when positive changes happen, like improving mood, anxiety levels, focus and cognitive function.

Estes Park Health will continue to explore the topic of mental health throughout May, providing background information about the impacts of mental health and helpful tips to reduce stress and anxiety.

Estes Park Rotary Club Establishes $25,000 Matching Grant For Upcoming Memory Care Facility The Rotary Club of Estes Park will match all donations up to $25,000 to benefit the Estes Dementia Day Center initiative. Rotarians and the public are encouraged to use this grant to double their donation amount.

The Estes Dementia Day Center is expected to open in early 2026. Its mission is to provide a safe, stimulating experience for those suffering from early to mid-stage dementia, while also allowing respite for caregivers.

This initiative hopes to raise $500,000 prior to opening, in order to ensure the sustainability of the center. Donations are tax-deductible.

Biking Trail Ridge Road And Old Fall River Road Typically Trail Ridge Road opens to vehicles around Memorial Day, and Old Fall River Road opens to vehicles around the beginning of July, dependent on snowpack. So this weekend, I wanted to see and places to visit. One of the places was Muir Woods which is filled with beautiful redwoods. As we entered the national park, I noticed a description on a plaque that described how the cluster of trees that surrounded us were formed. The clusters are called Family Circles because they are all related. Their roots are intertwined, and they exist to support one another. While standing among these giants I had a few ideas that I wanted to share when I got back, so here are a few of them. As you may already know the majestic trees found in the redwood forests of California have been on the earth for over 100 million years.

I’ve read that at one point in time the giant redwoods could be found almost everywhere in the world, but they are now found primarily in a narrow strip of land near the California coast. The statistics describing the redwood tree are truly mind boggling. For instance, these giants can live for upwards of 2,000 years. They can weigh up to 500 tons. They may grow to a height of over 350 feet and be over 25 feet in diameter. With the size and weight of these trees it would stand to reason that the root system would go deep into the earth, providing the support it would need to weather high winds, lightning storms, and earthquakes, but actually the roots aren’t very deep at all. In fact, they are only about 6-12 feet deep. The roots of each tree will spread out laterally and interlock with the root systems of surrounding trees which gives them the strength they need to stay upright over millennia.

And, in addition to the joint strength of their roots these trees also release upwards of 500 gallons of water into the air each day to help create a moist fog that provides the other trees and plants in the forest the water they need

this applying to us in our community.

The redwoods are a prime example of effective teamwork. In order to survive, withstanding adversities and inevitable hardships, all the redwoods must work together. By sharing their main resource (water) with the other trees and plants in the forest, they are truly making an investment in the team, and through their teamwork, these trees have results that reach the heavens. In the same way, I believe the results we are experiencing through the ministry of Crossroads is reaching the heavens and making an eternal difference in the lives of our neighbors in need. We have a strong root system embedded in our community where we find neighbor supporting neighbor with resources to make sure they don’t fall during the storms of life or grow weary when the weight of circumstances press down on them. Families of neighbors who have been planted in our community are fortunate to be surrounded by a caring, compassionate forest of love. Let’s continue to cultivate the Estes Valley with a love for neighbor that binds us together and ensures no one ever finds themselves in a struggle alone. We really do need each other!

Growing up I needed my Dad whenever I was short on cash, and on more than one occasion, he would remind me that “Money doesn’t grow on trees!” I have discovered this to be true, but if you do come across a tree with money on it, I’d like to come see it.

Crutches4Africa.org Sunrise Rotary and Noon Rotary have been collaborating on a project titled Crutches4Africa. It is a 501(c)(3) organization and is the international project of Mountain Foothills Rotary Club in District 5450. David Talbot is a Rotarian and a polio survivor. He and his wife Candice, founded this organization after witnessing people in Africa struggling to move due to the effects of polio. Crutches4Africa is now a worldwide organization and every person participating in it is a volunteer. No one is paid. They do this out of the goodness of their heart to provide mobility devices to people stricken with polio. They are living Rotary’s motto: Service Above Self.
