Street Closures In Effect For September 10th Longs Peak Scottish-Irish Festival Parade

The annual Longs Peak ScottishIrish Highland Festival Parade will travel through downtown Estes Park beginning at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, Sept.

10. On-street parking spaces on Elkhorn Avenue will be closed around midnight the night before the parade.

At 8:30 a.m., the Estes Park Police Department will close the parade route along Elkhorn Avenue from West Park Center west to U.S. 34/Wonderview Avenue. At 8:50 a.m. the remainder of Elkhorn Avenue will be closed east to the U.S. 36/U.S. 34 intersection. Portions of Elkhorn Avenue will reopen to vehicles after the parade passes and pedestrians are clear of the roadway.

The parade will continue east through the U.S. 36/U.S. 34 intersection, ending in the Estes Park Visitor Center north parking lot.

Side streets along the parade route remain open during the parade, but access to the parade route will be prohibited until the parade passes and pedestrians are clear of the roadway.

Motorists will not be able to leave parking lots along the parade route until the parade has passed. To avoid

the parade route and bypass the downtown area, motorists may use alternate routes including the Moccasin bypass, Graves Avenue, Community Drive, Manford Avenue, U.S. 36 to Mall Road, U.S. 34 and Wonderview Avenue.

Westbound traffic on U.S. 34 will be diverted onto Steamer Drive to Steamer Parkway and then onto Wonderview Avenue. All eastbound traffic on Wonderview Avenue will be diverted to Steamer Parkway, then to Steamer Drive and onto to U.S. 34.

The Estes Park Free Shuttles will experience some service delays due to the parade Sept. 10 beginning at 9 a.m. until the completion of the parade. The shuttles are expected to resume the normal schedule by noon. The following stops will be out of service during the parade: Brown Route #1 (Estes Park Visitor Center) and #19 - (Barlow Plaza) as well as all stops on the Gold Route. Light And Power To Continue Trenching Along Homer Rouse Trail To Replace Electric Line Estes Park Light and Power's trenching project along the Homer Rouse Trail is expected to resume the week of Sept. 12, 2016. This project is necessary to replace existing overhead electric lines with underground lines. The trenching project is expected to be complete within approximately six months. Planned work hours are 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, weather permitting. Work will begin at the first trail switchback. Access to the Homer Rouse Trail during working hours will be limited for safety purposes, with rolling closures near affected areas. Full closures will be enacted only on days when blasting is required for the project. Please watch for signage in the area and visitestes.org/electricprojects

for regular updates on this project and work location. Electricity will remain in service during construction.

These electric line replacements are required to increase electrical service reliability for customers along Highway 7 and in the Allenspark area. Placing the primary line underground will provide higher quality service and reduce future outages.

Sanitary Sewer Improvement Project Begins At Blue Spruce Drive In Fall River Estates Construction was scheduled to begin September 6, 2016 on sanitary sewer main improvements in the Blue Spruce Drive area of Fall River Estates. The project will replace over 450 feet of deteriorated clay pipe and is expected to conclude the first week of October 2016. During con-

struction the District expects no sewer service interruption and very minimal traffic impact.

Senior Citizens Center To Hold Fundraiser Breakfast On September 17 The community is invited to attend EPSCC, Inc.’s final fundraiser breakfast of the year on Saturday, September 17 at the Estes Park Senior Center, 220 Fourth Street. No reservations are needed; just drop in anytime between 7:00 and 10:30 a.m.

The cost for the all-you-can-eat buffet is $8 for adults and $4 for children ages 4-7; kids under 4 are free. Enjoy eggs, breakfast potatoes, pancakes, biscuits and gravy, sausage, bacon, fresh fruit, juice, and coffee. It’s a great deal for a great cause!

Public Input Requested On Alternatives For Management Of The Crater Trail In RMNP Rocky Mountain National Park (RMNP) is considering options for management of the Crater Trail, which originates near Milner Pass and extends to above tree line east of the Continental Divide. Park staff will be preparing an Environmental Assessment (EA) and invites public input in advance of preparation of the EA. The Crater Trail in its current configuration is resulting in harm to park resources and is not sustainable from a trail construction and maintenance perspective. The public scoping process has begun and comments are invited through October 3, 2016. The EA will analyze a range of alternatives to meet project objectives, evaluate issues and impacts on park resources and values, and identify mitigation measures to lessen the degree or extent of these impacts.

The Crater Trail is a one-mile-long trail on the east side of Specimen Mountain.

It differs from other trails in the park in that it is an informal route that was not designed and constructed, but developed over time. As a result, the trail is steep and severely eroded in sections, impacting the alpine tundra and cultural resources. The trail is in designated wilderness and is part of the Specimen Mountain Research Natural Area. The trail is typically closed annually from May to August 15 during the bighorn lambing season. For the past two years, the Crater Trail has been closed yearround pending the outcome of the EA process.

Preliminary options that have been identified for management of the trail and surrounding area include reconstructing the trail within the current alignment, rerouting the trail to a less steep gradient, or permanently closing the trail. Also under consideration is allowing continued use of the current trail and implementing minor improvements within the limits of the existing trail maintenance program (the no action alternative). If the trail or segments of the trail were abandoned due to reroutes or closure, abandoned trail segments would be restored to natural conditions through active replanting or natural revegetation.

The park is hosting a meeting about the proposed project on Tuesday, September 13, 2016, from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at the Grand Lake Fire Protection District Station located at 201 W. Portal Road in Grand Lake. This will be an opportunity to express ideas, concerns, and recommendations about alternative actions and have questions answered. There will be a short presentation at 6:15 p.m., and park staff will be available to answer questions until 7:30 p.m. The public is invited to visit at any point during the scheduled time to review materials and provide written comments.

Park staff encourage public participation throughout the planning process. There will be two opportunities to comment formally on the project – one starting now during initial project scoping and again following release of the EA. Comments received during the scoping period will be used to help define the issues and concerns to be addressed in the Environmental Assessment, while also assisting with analyzing the different alternatives.

Comments must be received in writing by close of business on October 3, 2016.

Junior Election The League of Women Voters of Estes Park will be hosting a Junior Election to give young Estes Valley residents an opportunity to voice their opinion about who should govern the USA. All students, grades 5-12, enrolled in the public school system will vote at school. Students kindergarten – 4th grade, young adults (out of high school but not yet 18), all home schooled youth, and those Estes Valley residents who attend school (K-12) outside the Estes Valley are eligible to vote at the Estes Valley Library.

ing networks. Please feel free to contact us to be sure that your organization is included.

Participants in this program will be encouraged to attend the LWV forums in September and October (at the Estes Park Town Hall) and to submit questions at these events. Watch this newspaper for dates and times.

Watch And Enjoy Elk Rut In Safety

The annual elk rut has begun and the bull elk are already busy bugling, gathering their harems of females and challenging one another for breeding rights.

The elk are amazing and wonderous animals that are fun to watch but remember, these are wild animals competing for dominance and the bulls are especially “pumped-up” at this time of year.

Avoid potential accident, injury or even death by always viewing from a safe distance. If an animal is carefully watching you and appears “jumpy,” you are way too close. Avoid eye contact and back away. Raise your arms to make yourself

look larger. For photographers, a good rule of thumb is “give them room, use your zoom.”

Keep you dog leashed and quiet. Do not allow them to bark, lunge at or chase wildlife. Elk view your dog as a predator.

Never block traffic.

“Elk jams” are a danger to everyone – blocking traffic on single lane roads creates all kinds of potentially dangerous situations.

Be sure to pull completely off the roadway, out of the way of through traffic.

Never, ever imitate an elk call or bugle during the rut. This can endanger you and the elk.

Please respect private property. Elk know no boundaries and are found all around town.

If they are in a private homeowners yard, please watch the

animals from a public area.

Never get between two bull elk or a bull and his cows. Situations can change very rapidly during the rut as the animals run, herd their harem or charge.

Don’t ignore the cows, they can still be dangerous, any time of year, not just during calving season.

Remember – elk are wild animals. Be aware and be respectful. View quietly from a safe distance. Never attempt to touch or feed wildlife, it’s dangerous and illegal.

Keep dogs leashed and quiet and when photographing, use your zoom, give them room. Enjoy the rut and stay safe!

Nominate A Deserving Youth Today For Outstanding Philanthropy Do you know an outstanding youth that “gives back” to our community? How about a youth group that made a difference? We need your help in recognizing these outstanding individuals or groups.

A big part of the evening is to recognize those community members who have made an impact during the past year through. An individual’s expression of philanthropy can come in many forms - volunteering time, sharing talents, or making a financial contribution. Last year’s award recipients were an inspiration to us all. We are so very lucky to be in a community where there is such amazing engagement, at all levels. 2015 was the first year that young people in our community were recognized for giving back in extraordinary ways. This week we will highlight the 2015 nominees and recipient of the Youth Philanthropist of the Year Award.

Eagle Rock students were nominated for providing immense support to a variety of Land Trust and community projects, particularly critical in the flood re-

covery process. These students worked hard, often in terrible weather, to bring wildlife habitat back, stabilize riverbanks, plant trees, re-seed native grasses and wildflowers, and ‘regreen’ our open spaces.

The BIONIC team (Believe It or Not I Care) at Estes Park Middle school were nominated for their work reaching out to those in the community who needed help by planning events in and outside of school. The BIONIC team sent letters and gifts to students who were sick, delivered blankets to adults and youth who needed comfort, and hosted concessions at the middle school to raise money for a project to improve the school grounds.

They created an anti-bullying program, built a ‘serenity space’ for quiet reflection, and planned motivational events for their fellow students.

The recipient of the Youth Philanthropist of the Year was Will Thomas. Will serves on the steering committee for the Estes Arts District and gives voice to young musicians in Estes Park. He lends great energy to the arts movement and represents the needs and desires of young artists. He is an inclusive leader, bringing other young musicians into his performances to give them exposure and experience. He sets an example for his peers by interacting with the adult community, by including others, and usually by being the youngest person in the room.

Museum Event Offers Ideas For Upcoming Table Setting Competition

At last Friday’s special event hosted by the Estes Park Museum Friends & Foundation, Elaine Downing posed next to her table setting showcasing Stangl Pottery. The Stangl brand became highly popular during the 20th century, known for its innovative artware, featuring bright and colorful bird figurines and hand-painted dinnerware in floral and fruit patterns. Elaine’s collection was used by her family for all occasions for many years.

The recent event was held to offer design ideas—and to showcase the fun and creativity that can be had— as the Museum Friends prepare to host the firstever Creative Colorado Table Settings competition this October 21-23. This competition will be a special fundraiser for the Museum Friends, taking place at the YMCA of the Rockies’ Willome Building. The public will also be invited that weekend to tour the settings and enjoy a showcase of both vintage and modern designs.

Among the prizes, the grand-prize winner will receive a personal meal for two prepared and served by the Lodge at the Stanley Hotel.

A panel of local judges will review all the entries on Friday evening, October 23, and prizes will be awarded to winners in each category (adult or child; formal or informal; individual or commercial) and for Best in Show. In addition, a special prize will be given for the best historical menu and table setting that relates specifically to Estes Park. Complete di-

rections and guidelines for the event, as well as entry forms, are available at the Estes Park Museum.

The competition is open to individuals, families, social groups and commercial enterprises (shops, hotels, inns or restaurants) seeking to showcase their expertise in creating unique and beautiful table settings. While designing a menu that is both thematic and appropriate to the occasion are important aspects of the contest, no cooking is required and no actual food is to be prepared.

This event marks the first such competition in Estes Park, inspired by similar table-setting competitions that have proven popular around the country. So dust off great-grandmother Sophie’s wedding china, or your mother’s fiesta ware, and use it in designing your own celebratory table.

Daily Lunch Specials In October 2008, upon the death of Bob Forrister, I wrote a column about Bob and his lovely wife Rose. Today we reprint the column in memory of Rose Forrister who passed gracefully into spirit on September 1.

May her eternal Colorado Trail be lined with her favorite garden flowers.

My friend Rose is a strong, independent, wise woman who has the gift of growing an Eden out of the cold, hard, rocky ground we have around here. Under Rose’s tender care, a plethora of colors, textures and scents sprout from the earth each summer, to become an enviable garden a little on the wild side (as in natural), like Rose, herself.

For the past few years I have managed to find some time to work with Rose in her garden each summer, and have learned many practices from her no-nonsense approach to growing things. She doesn’t use chemicals nor does she amend her soil, and she doesn’t poison the critters that dig their way under her unruly fence. Rose just works very, very hard, from sun up to sun down, day after day, to bring forth the best this tough, crusty earth has to offer. Not groomed nor manicured but healthy and pure, Rose’s garden is a spiritual place.

With the steady help of her husband, Bob, the gardener Rose grows blooms from her soul.

Aside from getting to take home a lot of hand-me-down plants, the reward for working side by side with Rose and Bob in Rose’s garden has been to step out of the hot sun into their simple cabin and join Bob for a round of songs at the piano.

Just as Rose elicits an intoxicating garden out of unforgiving, lifeless soil, so Bob tickled the air around us with colorful tunes when his fingers touched the keys of a piano. As soon as I named a song (such as Danny Boy, Bicycle Built for Two and Home on the Range), Bob would start to play, without music and without looking at the keyboard. He would look at me with a twinkling smile as I sang. If the key wasn’t suitable for my limited voice range, he would simply lift his hands and shift them over a few keys and begin again, without missing a beat, or a note. It didn’t matter if I needed the song in the key of C (no sharps or flats) or the key of B (with five sharps), Bob could transpose it and play from memory without once flubbing up.

Bob delighted in playing his piano and anyone within earshot found great pleasure in hearing him play.

Sometimes while Bob played, I watched his eyes look beyond me, beyond Rose’s garden outside the window, beyond Longs

Village Thrift Shop Closed This Saturday For Scottish Fest

The Village Thrift Shop will be closed this Saturday, September 10th due to the traffic congestion and parking limitations in the neighborhood that day. We hope everyone has a great time at the Scottish Festival!

Peak in the distance, to an ethereal place of sheer joy—his personal garden of music deep within his soul.

When the song ended his dreamy eyes would return to the room, his hands would rest on the keys, and Bob would compliment me on my singing. (He was certainly a gentleman because my singing is hardly worthy of compliment.)

Even as Bob became weaker from his Alzheimer’s, his hands puffy, his breathing labored, he could still pull from his memory all the songs I could sing. When he got too tired to play, he rested his hands on his legs, his eyes drifted to that garden of music deep within his soul, and he would recite lyrics—poetry, really—while their melodies played in his mind. He may not have remembered my name, but he could recall the old songs; they were a part of him.

Last week the keys to the Forrester piano fell silent for the last time, as the gentleman musician with a twinkle in his eye left this place to go to his eternal garden of music.

I will miss Bob and his music, his gentle wit and caring disposition. I will miss Rose, who is the strong, independent, wise woman I hope to be someday. And I will miss Rose’s garden, which, without her tender care, may soon become an overgrown patch of weeds when she leaves here to join family in Casper Mountain. “I’m a Wyoming girl at heart,” she told me in her soft-spoken voice. Rose is the type who blooms where she is planted (and planting), so I know she will be okay as she begins her life, and hopefully another garden, anew, with the memory of Bob’s music keeping her company.

The last lyrics I heard Bob recite to the music playing in his mind are the words to a hauntingly beautiful song called “Colorado Trail.” The second verse makes me think of Rose, about whom Bob told me this, “It is easy to be a gentleman with a good woman like Rose.”

Weep, all ye little rains; wail winds wail All along, along, along the Colorado Trail.”

Internationale Aviation Club Meeting To Feature Graham Nelson’s Trip To Oshkosh Air Venture The next meeting of the Estes Park Internationale Aviation Club will be on Tuesday, September 13, 2016, at 6:30 pm, in the Hondius Room, of the Estes Valley Library. This meeting is free, open to the public, and everyone is welcome.

Come visit with aviation enthusiasts and listen to our speaker, Graham Nelson, give a very interesting and informative presentation on the recent Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA) Air Venture Air show, in Oshkosh, Wisconsin. Graham's presentation will be filled with pictures and videos from this year's events, so don't miss this chance to

be updated on some of the latest from the largest airshow in the country.

Graham is originally from St. Charles, Illinois, and has resided in Estes Park since 2010. He works at our local Safeway store, so there is a good chance you have seen him hard at work there. His love of aviation started in childhood as the family lived near Chicago O'Hare International Airport, and his fascination with aircraft has continued to this day.

Graham is an avid selftaught enthusiast, and each year he enjoys attending the EAA airshow to stay up to date on the latest in aircraft development and technology. The presentation will be loaded with pictures and some videos of the display and show aircraft, so come see the details so you too can stay up to date!

Mark your calendars! On Friday, September 23rd members of the Colorado Avian Research and Rehabilitation Institute, or CARRI will be having our first annual Fall Celebration at the Hangar restaurant. The Hangar restaurant is in the club house of the Estes Park 18 Hole Golf Course located just off Hwy. 7 south of Estes Park.

Members of CARRI have been involved in a variety of research projects since its inception. Some species that we have been working with include; the Northern Pygmy-Owl, Northern Saw-whet Owl, Long-eared Owl, American Kestrel, Barn Owl, Rosy Finches, and corvids including Common Ravens, American Crows and Black-billed Magpies.

The above list is just a sample of the species that we work with, through both research and rehabilitation.

Members of CARRI will be presenting their findings from the various research projects they have been working on in 2016 and before.

In 2016, several injured birds have been brought to our facility. As always; most injuries are human caused.

This year we had two American Crows brought to us. One fell from its nest and the other was found on the ground upside down. The latter ended up having West Nile Virus.

Both birds were released as the first one grew up to be a wonderful adult and the

second healed from the virus. That was a long ordeal for that bird.

We also had several hummingbirds brought to us, and a few that had to be retrieved from homes and businesses.

Hummingbirds are one of the more difficult species to rehabilitate, but we do our best.

At the celebration, Cowboy Brad Fitch will entertain us with his music during the silent auction and the hors d'oeuvres.

The silent auction will have art; handmade items will include glass vases and a crocheted blanket.

Art has been provided by a number of local artists and photographers. There will be both printed art and original watercolor paintings available for bidding.

Local brewery, the Lumpy Ridge Brewing Company in Estes Park has generously donated a keg or two of beer (depending on how thirsty you all are) for your enjoyment. All of the proceeds from the sale of the beer go directly to CARRI. If you’re in or around Estes Park on September 23rd this year, buy your tickets for our celebration as seating is limited.

Bright Christmas Extends Thanks To The Editor: On behalf of the Bright Christmas Board (a 501 c-3 organization), and the families we serve, I want to thank the community for the ongoing, generous support of the work our organization has done in the Estes Valley for 32 years. As you may not know, Bright Christmas helps families in need in our community, throughout the year, not only at Christmas.

Bright Christmas, in partnership with Crossroads Ministry, was able to provide new school supplies for close to 90 children as they started the school year. Did you know that the average cost for school supplies for an elementary student can be upwards of $60-70? Because of funds given by you and your donations of new school supplies we are able to help these kids and then donate the surplus supplies to the Estes Park schools.

We also would like to thank the folks at Master Graphics and MedX for having supported this effort by being collection points for the new supplies. Thanks to the volunteers and staff at Crossroads who separate the supplies, prepare the bags for the kids and distribute them to clients and non-clients alike.

We will soon be getting ready to begin our 32nd year of Christmas support for families in need. What an amazing partnership with the community that we are privileged to continue. Thank you for your trust and continued support on behalf of the families of Estes Park.

The hard work demanded of us in periods of grief and loss is often accompanied by feelings of isolation, confusion and loneliness. As one wise gentleman put it after the death of his spouse of 65 years, “I am in a strange and unfamiliar land and have never experienced anything like this.â€?

This year, Hospice of the Estes Valley has begun to offer a new approach to

“Walking with Grief.� Catherine Cornell, one of an amazing group of hospice volunteers is hosting a monthly series of hikes for those who are dealing with grief and loss. On the 2nd Wednesday of each month from April – October folks from the community are invited to walk together and share stories of loved ones and life as it continues to shift in the wake of their death. One participant commented afterward, “The walk was uplifting and worthwhile. It did my heart good.�

The gift of walking alongside friends, family and others in similar situations while enjoying the extraordinary beauty in our local landscapes offers a time to wonder together and gather strength for the road ahead. When asked, another participant remarked, “I was not quite sure what I was doing. I enjoyed the walk and being with everybody on the

hike, recalling in quiet the last time I had been around the lake with my wife. I feel very peaceful up there.

The next hikes are scheduled Wednesdays, September 14th and October 12th 9:00-11:00 a.m. at Lily Lake. We will meet in the Lily Lake parking lot to begin promptly at 9 a.m. The hike opens with a short thoughtful reading, brief introductions of those participating followed by a manageable ½ mile walk together around the lake. If you or someone you know has experienced a significant loss and struggles to find support, please join us to share stories, tears, laughter and inspiration.

Estes Park Archives Program Wednesday, October 5 through Wednesday, October 12 is the next scheduled trip of Estes Park residents from Denver to Limerick, Ireland, to visit Lady Dunraven at her estate, and there are still four open spots remaining. The itinerary includes a Saturday morning stop at Killruddery in Bray to say hello to Lord and Lady Meath, direct descendants of the Fourth Earl of Dunraven, who acquired 6000 acres of land in Estes Park in the 1870s, as well as side trips to Cork, Kerry, and Belfast in Northern Ireland.

As with last year's visit, Aer Lingus and the ITAA are kicking in $500 per couple

to defray travel expenses. Total out-ofpocket costs, including round-trip coach airfare, depends on class of hotel selected, but can range from as little as $700 per person. An informational meeting will be held on Tuesday, September 13 at 9:00 a.m. in the back room of Molly B's restaurant at 200 Moraine Avenue, with coffee provided. Estes Valley Crisis Advocates Seeks Two Board Members

Are you looking to contribute to your community? Consider joining the board of the Estes Valley Crisis Advocates! The board of the Crisis Advocates guides the policy governing the organization, actively leads the annual fundraiser, and oversees and supports the executive director. The five member board is looking to fill two current vacancies. The positions are two year terms with the option to serve three consecutive terms for a total of six years.

The positions will begin on October 19.

The mission of the Estes Valley Crisis Advocates is to provide advocacy, prevention, community education, free individual counseling and support groups to

survivors of crime (domestic violence, sexual assault, stalking, burglary, etc.) and trauma (accidents, suicide survivors, unattended deaths).

GIMP is a free app that allows you to rotate, crop, adjust colors, re-size and touch-up your photos. This class is for participants with intermediate tech skills. Community Benefit For Will Erickson

The community of Allenspark has planned a potluck to benefit Will Erickson this Sunday, September 11th from 2 to 5 p.m. at the Wild Basin Lodge.

Friends of Will would like to raise funds to help him with continuing medical expenses and other needs related to a debilitating illness that has kept him from working and no diagnosis at this point.

Many know him from his childhood years growing up in Allenspark, attending school in Estes Park, or from The Fawn Brook Inn where he has worked for several years as chef.

The Wild Basin Lodge is located at 1130 County Road 84 W north of Allenspark.

EPNEWS.COM Wonder of wonders, my dog Sunshine is quietly laying on the daybed on a comforter not chewing but sleeping as I write this article. My little mini dachshund used to lay there as I wrote my column. I have such sweet memories of that dear little dog. Fritzie has been gone to doggie heaven a year now and strangely enough, Sunshine was born almost exactly the day that Fritzie died. That is the only thing they have in common! But Sunshine has stolen my heart even when she is up to mischief. Oops, I forgot, they both also like (liked) raw carrots.

I was peeling some carrots the other day for some Morning Glory Muffins and there sat Sunshine looking like a well behaved one year old puppy! I decided to offer her some of the carrot I was preparing. Boy, did she chow down on that. It was all I could do to finish the carrots without her standing up at the counter to get some more. She has that bad habit as you know from my former tales of her escapades.

The muffins turned out to be really good. I froze some for my friends who are here from New Orleans for the Scottish Festival. After making them I found another recipe that called for crushed pineapple. I think that pineapple would really add to the muffins so the following recipe is a little different from the original that I made.

Morning Glory Muffins Makes 12.

Pre-heat oven to 350 degrees- place in bottom third of oven 2 cups all purpose flour ½ cup each of granulated sugar and packed brown sugar.

2 tsp. each of cinnamon and baking soda 1 tsp. salt 2 cups shredded carrots

1 sweet apple, shredded, like Granny Smith ¾ cup sweetened coconut ½ cup golden raisins 1 small can of crushed pineapple with juice. ½ cup toasted pecans or walnuts.

3 eggs ¾ cup vegetable oil 2 tsp. vanilla Line muffins tins with liners or use silicone muffins cups. (I do that.) Whisk dry ingredients together then stir in carrots, apple, coconut, raisins, nuts and pineapple. Stir eggs, oil and vanilla and then add to carrot mix. Stir only until moistened.

Scoop into prepare muffin tins until full as they will not rise very much. Bake about 30 minutes, rotating pans about half way through, until toothpick comes out clean. Allow to cool 10 minutes before removing from tins or silicone cups.

These freeze beautifully. Although a sweet treat, these muffins are also a healthy after school snack for the kids or grownups.

I hope y’all are enjoying all the festivities of the Scottish Festival. My friends from New Orleans and I are right in the middle of them so having these muffins to grab for a quick snack has proven a godsend.

Note: I got such a nice review about my shrimp and grits: “Esther, I made your shrimp and grits recipe tonight, and oh my, what a great tasting dish. Bob loved it and says thank you! I will make that again. Judy” I think I will make them for my visitors.

Coming from my hometown, they will appreciate shrimp and grits. I hope some of y’all tried them!

An Act Of Love At United Methodist Church

The United Methodist Church of Estes Park will present the award-winning documentary "An Act of Love" on Wednesday, September 14th at 7 p.m. at the church, 1509 Fish Hatchery Road.

This recent gripping documentary has been selected and shown by many prestigious independent film festivals around the country, including the Sedona, Florida, Denver, St. Louis, and Newport Beach Film Festivals.

From the San Francisco Chronicle: “Emotionally powerful and ultimately uplifting, this film follows the travails of Pennsylvania minister Frank Schaefer, who gets into trouble with the United Methodist Church when he officiates the

wedding of his gay son. Director Scott Sheppard presents a lovely portrait of a family and sensitively explores the concerns of a mainstream church struggling to deal with cultural shifts. It’s compelling from beginning to end."

The producers of the film commented, “Conversation about LGBTQ rights within religious communities has often caused pain and division. With this film we hope to bring all sides together to see the human side of this debate though the stories of those who have had to deal with the real consequences of their community's stance on this issue.”

THOSE ‘CLOUDS’…OVER ESTES PARK? I was sitting in my usual ‘office’ place…at McDonalds, of course, where the staff are kind enough to let me study and interact with special people as the opportunity arises. (Stop by anytime, let’s visit). However, as I glanced out the window that day recently, I noticed a young lady get out of an out-of-state car and perch herself on the curb by the car that brought her. Suddenly there was a huge plume of smoke rising above her head…then another and another and …as quickly as she could puff on her cannabis device. After puffing feverishly for about five minutes, she put her device away and walked toward the door of her car. I held my breath for a moment, then breathed a sigh of relief as she got into the back seat and an older person got behind the wheel.

But my relief was short-lived because as that car left the parking lot, a car with Colorado plates pulled in and a family got out and came in for a meal. Soon they exited McD’s and headed for their car. However, before they got in, the older woman ‘lit up’ her device and preceded, for about five minutes, to send clouds of marijuana smoke into our beautiful Estes Park sky. Like the other user she relished each deep ‘drag’, letting it have its full effect, before sending the smoke skyward. Then another and another, almost feverishly during all that time, one deep puff after another. She finally put out the fire in her device and…you guessed it…got into the driver’s seat. As she pulled out I thought, “What should I do? Alert the police that we had a ‘possibly’ chemically impaired driver heading out on the road, possibly down the canyon, endangering lives of others?” If I saw someone drinking a six-pack of an alcohol beverage and then sliding under the wheel, I would have done that. Should I deal differently with this now chemically-affected person? I didn’t make the phone call. All I did was thank God that I was not driving up the canyon when someone under the influence of this mind-altering drug was herding her car toward me. So I just offered a silent prayer for every driver…including this one…that there would be no tragic incident. I would imagine that you would have shared many of my same thoughts had you witnessed these two incidents…in a one-hour period.

I suspect that some of you shared my thoughts when I read, shortly after I had witnessed these two users, that it had been proposed that perhaps our town could benefit financially from opening a marijuana dispensary here. It bothers me already that just down the mountain we have such businesses and they cater to people who visit our area from other places, not primarily for the ‘Rocky Mountain High’ that we experience due to our scenery and people and animals, but mainly to take advantage of the other ‘high’ that our State has made available.

We all know that there are some for whom ‘medical marijuana’ is the only means to alleviate their physical pain. However, my concern is about those desirous of getting their hands on ‘recreational marijuana’ for the express purpose of ‘altering’ minds, and emotions. I’d hate to see them flocking to Estes Park because we ‘feed’ that desire.

So, even as many have openly shared feelings about ‘the Loop’, let’s share our feelings with our leaders about those who might come here to ‘get looped’. Let’s keep the clouds above Estes Park the beautiful God-given ones that we enjoy so much.

Gentle Yoga For Vitality And Mobility

New six-week series offered at the Estes Park Senior Center The Town of Estes Park’s Senior Services Division is offering a new six-week yoga series at the Estes Park Senior Center, 220 Fourth Street. Classes will be held on Fridays, October 7 through November 11, from 9:00 to 10:00 a.m. The cost for the six-week series is $35 for EPSCC, Inc. members or $49 for nonmembers. To register, stop by the Senior Center with cash or check by Friday, September 30. Class size is limited to 12 participants.

The six-week series will be taught by certified instructor Aimee Parnell, who completed her intensive yoga teacher training at the Shoshoni Ashram in Nederland, Colorado. Aimee’s classes will focus on slow, relaxing sequences that soothe muscles and joints, along

with calming meditations that inspire positivity. Yoga props--including bolsters, blocks, and straps--will be provided for use during class to ensure proper alignment and help deepen stretches.

Yoga offers many benefits including increased muscle tone, flexibility, balance, and strength, as well as improved mental focus. Yoga has also been shown to reduce stress and tension, and improve breathing, posture, and circulation.

Estes Park Chorale To Begin RehearsalsSeeking New Singers

New Chorale Director Denise Stookesberry The Estes Park Chorale, a mixed men’s and women’s singing group, has been in existence for over 40 years. This year begins another new era, with the recruitment of Denise Stookesberry as the new director. Rehearsals for the fall season begin on Wednesday, September 14 at 7:30 p.m. at the Community Church of the Rockies.

The Chorale is open to all singers without audition, but this year of particular need is for baritones and basses to supplement the men’s sections. High school students are also encouraged to join this group, giving them an opportunity for expanded experience in the vocal music realm. (This looks really good on your resume!)

gun in the early 1970s under the iconic direction of our founding director, Josephine (“Jo”) Waddell.

A couple of real old-timers have been with the group almost from the beginning.

Denise has been an active singer, choral director, and voice teacher for over 35 years. She holds music performance degrees from St. Louis University (BM) and Washington University (MM), where she also served on faculty as a voice instructor. Her vocal students have sung professionally in Broadway touring companies, community theaters and with professional, church and community choruses.

Denise has been a solo performer with the Estes Park Oratorio Society, Peak to Peak Concert Series, Allenspark Performing Arts, Pensacola Opera, Ohio Light Opera, Union Avenue Opera, the MUNY Opera, and Opera Theater of St. Louis. She was a long-time section leader and alto soloist with the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra and Chorus and has performed in and directed many musical theater productions.

As a choral conductor, her choirs were selected to perform at Carnegie Hall and toured in Europe. Denise is currently the Choral Director at Estes Park United Methodist Church and maintains a private voice studio in Estes and she is the Musical Director for the upcoming Fine Arts Guild production of Damn Yankees.

EVENTS IN ESTES PARK

First Look Trailer Of New Ghost Town Documentary At Historic Park Theatre On Saturday, September 24 at 7 p.m., the Estes Park Film Festival will present the firstlook teaser trailer for the upcoming film “Ghosts of the West: Stampede on the Bonanza Trail” along with the original Best Documentary Awardwinning feature “Ghosts of the West: The End of the Bonanza Trail.” Shot on location in the ghost towns and mining camps of the Old West, the special event benefits restoration work on the 103 year-old Historic Park Theatre that will host the event.

With location photography on the new film wrapping just days before the show, the Saturday event will be the first and only exhibition of the teaser trailer nationwide this year. Now more than fourteen years in the making, the ghost town documentary project has been enormously popular with audiences ever since the original film’s test screenings in 2012. Box office lines and capacity crowds, including sold-out events, have been common sights throughout its theatrical road show. Motion picture and television executives, academics, and film critics honored it with a Best Documentary Award in 2013. At a benefit screening in September 2014, the film gave the Park its first sold-out show

since 2007s “The Bourne Ultimatum.”

On-screen expert Ron Ruhoff explains the subject’s wide appeal at the start of the film: “Just the thought of visiting an old town with those falsefronted buildings and their open doors and windows...

There's something magical about it – about the Old West...”

Audiences have resoundingly agreed, rating the film a 4.5 on a scale of 1 to 5 with supporting written comments: “This is something that begs to be viewed more than once;” “The score is magnificent;” “Outstanding research and script;” “Loved the cinematography;” “The film touched my heart;” “Haunting.”

The filmmakers will answer questions about the entire project after the program. While the director is also expected to introduce the 2 p.m. matinee on Thursday, September 22, only the Saturday evening event will include the teaser trailer for “Stampede.” General admission tickets ($9 adult, $7.50 senior) can be can be purchased in advance at historicparktheatre.com or at the theatre box office during normal operating hours.

Topher Kittilson is originally from Rochester, Minnesota. He has lived in Longmont, Colorado for the last 15 years. He recently graduated from the University of Denver with a degree in History focusing on 1870s Colorado.

Longs Peak Scottish-Irish Highland Festival Cele More than 80,000 people are expected to attend this year's 40th annual Longs Peak Scottish-Irish Highland Festival, taking place Thursday, September 8th through Sunday, September 11th in Estes Park, the Celtic capital of North America.

The festival began 40 years ago as a gathering of four families for a picnic in the park. Today, the Festival has become an institution in Colorado, drawing huge crowds for a four-day festival featuring Jousting competitions, Highland games, musical acts, dance performances, dog show contests and Scottish and Irish food, drink and crafts. Unique to the festival is North America's largest Celtic parade attracting 40,000 spectators.

"As the founder of this event, it's been an honor to be a part of its growth and success over the last 40 years," said Dr. James Durward, festival founder. "I'd like to thank the

dedicated team of volunteer and staff as well as the Estes Park community that pulls together each year to make the festival bigger and better. Before the festival, Estes Park essentially shut down for business the day after Labor Day weekend. Now, every September the festival brings more than 80,000 people into Estes Park. I look forward to seeing what the next 40 years bring."

The festival kicks off Thursday night at 7:30 p.m. with Tattoo Estes - a one-of-akind parade ground concert that features military and pipe bands. The inspiring music and pageantry of this year's program celebrates our heritage, history and patriotism.

Those seeking a true glimpse into Celtic culture can top it all off by sampling traditional food and drink as well as browsing the wares of more than 100 importers and crafters of Celtic goods. Visitors can also check out their own families' genealogy by visiting the more than 70 Scottish family clan and society booths.

Salud Family Health Centers World Suicide Prevention Day - September 10 The World Health Organization estimates that over 800,000 people die from suicide every year. Suicide is the second leading cause of death among people aged 15-29. While suicide is a serious public health concern, it can be prevented with timely and often low cost interventions.

Fostering connections with those who have lost a loved one to suicide or have been suicidal themselves is crucial to furthering suicide prevention efforts.

Open communication is vital to combat suicide. People who are trained to communicate effectively with those who might be vulnerable to suicide is an important part of the prevention strategy.

All the connection and communication in the world will have no effect without the final ingredient - care. We need to make sure that our communities care enough to be able to identify and support those who may be at heightened risk. Anglo friends in Estes Park—if you experienced any difficulty reading that opening paragraph you will understand the need for the English Conversation Café (ECC), sponsored by the Estes Valley Library. The words might have been written in Chinese, Thai, Polish, Nepalese, Bengali or Russian because the Café is for any who seek to improve conversational skills: summer workers from other countries, recently arrived immigrants, even long-term residents. Happily, the Café is a community effort, with welcome assistance from the Town of Estes Park Shuttle and the Community Church of the Rockies.

The Silver Route shuttle departs from the Estes Park Visitor Center at 6:30 p.m. a Wednesday night, stopping at the Medical Center (two kids get on), Rocky Mountain Park Inn (a woman with groceries exits), and the Event Center (noone gets off or on). It crosses Lake Estes

causeway, turns up Fish Creek to Solitude Cabins (again, no-one on or off), and then stop 5½, our destination, the Community Church of the Rockies, where ECC volunteer Paul Everitt and I step down after thanking driver Fred, who had put Paul in contact with Shuttle Coordinator Brian Wells. Brian authorized stop 5½ because he understands transportation issues facing summer workers and recent immigrants. Shuttle service ends this Sunday, and the Café will move to the library in January, yet heartfelt thanks go to the town and the Community Church of the Rockies for supporting the English Conversation Café.

Patricia is a regular at ECC. She studied computer engineering and completed university in Mexico City. Now she works as a cook at Taco Bell, and has been in Estes Park for eight months. Patricia is on leave from her job with a computer company in Mexico, and proficiency in English will help her advance economically. She has relatives in Estes Park and will return to Mexico in 2017, much more fluent in English. She says, “I like to talk with others, and I want to get better speaking English.”

Irma and Jimena are working on pronouncing “Tuesday” and “Thursday” when I arrive. Both perform housekeeping in local hotels, and need relevant vocabulary for their jobs: bed, bedroom, blanket, rug, lamp, chair, floor, telephone,

They pick up pictures when instructed and place them on other pictures: “Get a pillow and put it on the bed.” “Get a rug and put it on the floor.” “Get a chair and put it on the floor.” “Get the dresser and put it on the floor.” “Get a mirror and put it on the dresser.” Both women have put in a full work day, but are eager and quick to improve their English. Jimena wants “to improve myself because in the USA we need English.” “I need English for work,” says Irma. Their friends Lupe and Esther, who also have housekeeping jobs in town, smile broadly and respond enthusiastically when asked what they like best about the class: “The teacher!”

Isabel arrives with her daughter and has a slightly different need: “I try to speak, but I don’t speak well. It is difficult for me to express myself. I have two daughters who need my help in school, and with English I will be able to help them more in school.” She works one-on-one with an ECC volunteer.

Leonor Kennell is the English Language Learner (ELL) Outreach Coordinator at the Estes Valley Library. Raised in the Bronx, she is of Cuban and Puerto Rican heritage. Earlier this year Leonor and her colleagues acted in awareness that English conversation is a critical need for non-native speakers. They started the ECC in June, and have attracted muy simpatico volunteers like Dave Thomas, Sunniva Russell, Nancy Fuller and Paul Everitt. More English-language conversation volunteers are needed, and because the Café is conducted in English one

need not speak other languages to be of use. “The ELL population in the Estes Valley is multicultural, not just Latino,” says Leonor. “The Café is not just for Spanish speakers; our vehicle is English.”

The English Conversation Café, where neighbors help neighbors, delivers compelling evidence that we live in a caring and responsive community. Years ago I saw this slogan on the side of a concrete truck on a New Jersey highway: “Find a need and fill it.” As they build friendships and help individuals gain English proficiency, Leonor and her colleagues are filling a clear need from which the Estes Valley benefits immeasurably. The Stitchin’ Den will host a quilter’s trunk show September 23-25, to celebrate the shop’s first anniversary. The trunk show will feature the unique designs and fabrics of Frond Design Studio, a small Midwest fabric design studio that focuses on local artist. The designs are as varied at the artists who create them—geometric shapes, nature inspired, intertwining quilt meanderings, and urban and modern collections. They are all hand generated; so, the painting and transferring process usually takes six to nine months. Once the designs are transferred to small batches of fabric, they make their way to small businesses like The Stitchin’ Den. The shop will offer yardage, precuts, and quilt kits during the trunk show.

The Stitchin’ Den has more than 5,000 square feet of retail space and an extensive selection of yarn, roving, needlepoint, cross stitch, needle supplies and now quilting fabric and supplies. “Quilters often walked into The Stitchin’ Den looking for quilting fabrics and supplies, so I knew that there was an opportunity to offer more to our customers,” said Susan Mock, owner of The Stitchin’ Den. “Our goal is to offer fabric that reflects the unique character and beauty of our

community.” Fabric lines include Cyndi Hershey’s Woodland Spirit, Our National Parks designed by Paula Stoddard, and James Meyer’s Nature’s Glory.

One of the most requested items this summer, has been The Stitchin’ Den unique design for the national Row by Row event. During the summer month, quilt shops across the United States are invited to create a design that reflects the personality of the shop or region and offer it to quilters who drop into the shop.

The Stitchin’ Den design, created by its resident quilter Pati Miller, included a cabin, lake, snow-capped mountains, elk and bear. “Quilters are looking for fabrics that have a mountain feel,” said Pati.

“Now, their interests are turning to flannels and holiday fabrics and we have them. We just created kits for holiday pillow, mug rugs, table runners, and bed pillows.”

New and traditional lines arrive weekly and include design by Moda and Kim Diehl. Beginning and experienced quilters will appreciate the selection of fabric on the bolt, precut designs and fat quarters that are available. Make sure to drop in during the trunk show to see the Frond Design Studio quilt.

Chorus and orchestra rehearsals begin this month for the December 2nd and 3rd Winter Concert by the Oratorio Society of Estes Park.

If you enjoy singing choral masterworks, you can join the Oratorio chorus, which rehearses Sunday afternoons from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. beginning Sept.

18th at Shepherd of the Mountains Lutheran Church, 2000 Ptarmigan Trail.

Orchestra rehearsals begin Sept. 19th and are on Monday evenings at 7:00 p.m. at the Presbyterian Community Church of the Rockies, 1700 Brodie Ave. The orchestra needs additional musicians on strings, oboe, and bassoon. The Winter Concert will include Ravel’s Mother Goose Suite with dancers from Estes Park’s Ballet Renaissance.

Estes Valley Quilt Guild Meeting September 14 The Estes Valley Quilt Guild meets the second Wednesday of each month. Janna was a middle school Home Economics teacher for many years and has loved all forms of needlework through the decades, but when she started quilting, she never looked back.

She loves to do both piecework and applique and specializes in mixing unrelated techniques to achieve new designs.

Janna has written five books and is the President of Courtship Quilts Publishing.

She also co-designs rulers with her husband, Paul for Bloc Loc Rulers. Paul is the inventor of Bloc Loc Rulers and is President of the company.

Local Volunteers About To Leave For Mission Trip To Africa Project will provide life-saving fresh water for 350,000+ people The Marion Medical Mission is pleased to announce Jim & Carol Nussbaumer of Estes Park will spend four to five weeks this fall partnering with African communities to provide fresh water sources to more than 2,500 villages in remote areas of Malawi, Zambia & Tanzania. Jim will be participating in his 18th mission trip with Marion Medical Mission. Carol will be on her 12th mission trip with Marion Medical Mission. 40 US volunteers, along with Marion Medical Mission founders Tom & Jocelyn Logan, will work in remote villages to help provide sustainable, life-saving fresh-water wells to areas who previously had none. Jim will be helping with the training and support of the vol-

unteers as well as with the locals actually manufacturing the shallow well pumps.

Carol will be working with two schools for the Hard of Hearing where she has worked for many years. “We are both excited to be going back to Malawi where we can see the immediate results of the work being done,” said Jim. “It is always gratifying to see how much difference one well for $400 can make in the lives of so many people, especially the children.”

Carol says “I have the joy of seeing my 200 deaf ‘grandchildren’ and doing speech therapy and classroom work with them. Malawi has very few teachers and even fewer trained to work with special needs students so I also provide afterschool tutorial sessions for the teachers.

Exhibition At The Art Center To Feature Fort Collins Artist Bonnie Bowne The Art Center of Estes Park is pleased to announce Bonnie Bowne as the featured artist for its upcoming exhibition “Shades of Gray, Splashes of Color” September 16-October 23. The artists reception is Friday, September 16, 5-7:00 p.m.

Born in Ames, Iowa, Bonnie Bowne’s passionate love of nature began the minute she set foot into the Great Plains of the American West. A wide-eyed child of nature, Bowne developed an eye for the striking beauty of the West, and she spent copious amounts of time drawing, coloring and finally painting. Bonnie said, “Providing art materials was a form of self-preservation for my folks. They felt it was better to provide supplies, than having me decide I didn’t like the color of our brown brick fireplace and try to add a little color to it.”

Her parents supported her hobby of art. Her father was a bit of a renaissance man himself, being a gifted potter and wood sculptor. He was also an anatomy professor, and taught his young daugh-

ter how to draw humans and animals, in part, using dissections in his anatomy lab. “I’m sure there are not many kids that spent time observing actual dissections to discover what gives the outer body form. I’m sure my friends thought I was completely weird.” Her parents were also pragmatists and told her art as a hobby was nice, but a woman needed a real career so she could always support herself and remain independent.

She went to Colorado State University and enrolled in Pre-Med. She knew immediately that medicine wasn’t in her future so she took an array of eclectic classes ending up with minors in Art History, Anthropology, Biology and History, with her BS in Finance and Accounting, soon to be followed by a MS in Financial Planning. “Those were such tough years, I wanted to create, but decided if I couldn’t be a painter, I could, at least, be a collector of other people’s paintings.”

Despite working 50-60 hours a week in accounting, she subscribed to all the art magazines, went to all the museums and art openings for other artists, collecting pieces from many fine artists. “I remember seeing an exhibit around 1999 where Lanford Monroe was the featured artist in Jackson Hole. Her paintings literally brought me to tears and nearly every single painting had already sold. How could anyone capture the light with such a clumsy man-made media such as oil paint? And yet she had, and she had done it masterfully.”

Then September 11, 2001, the World Trade Centers collapsed. “I was on my way to work, and as trite as it may sound,

I suddenly realized life was short and anything can happen, at any time. I went up to Rocky Mountain National Park for a little reflection and finally understood that I wanted to paint. The next week I hauled out all my art supplies and decided, even if I was never in a gallery, or if nobody ever saw them but me, I could paint, and I would paint.”

Does she consider all those years a waste? “Not at all! While I might not have been painting, I spent a lot of my free time, and all my vacations, studying and exploring nature. Armed with my

cameras, I spent my time trying to capture the light that nature provides. The work I did behind the lens has helped me immeasurably with my painting. I never ceased to be amazed by what nature shows us, and that continues to be my inspiration for both my paintings and my photography.”

Bowne knew she didn’t want to go back to college to study painting, so at the beginning she bought books and videos to teach herself the basics. Several years passed and she finally felt confident enough to start taking classes and workshops. She studied with Jim Wilcox, Jeanne MacKenzie, Dan Young and Dave Santillanes, and did the mentorship pro-

fully, the emotions I feel about the scene, continue to the person who views and connects to one of my paintings. I want people to feel the love and joy I find in nature. I want to evoke an emotional response from the viewer creating a connection with that viewer. One of my current goals is to use my paintings, to save, in some small way, our open spaces and our wildlife.” Bowne’s hero, from this aspect, is Clyde Aspevig. “Aspevig has used his paintings to masterfully showcase the open spaces we have left, and he has also purchased land and put it into a conservation trust to preserve it from development for generations to come. With our current environmental challenges, isn’t it marvelous to use art to save the last undeveloped lands in our country, to create areas where wildlife can exist, where the landscape remains virtually untouched from development?” The passion to preserve our wildlife and the pristine landscapes of the West prompts her to just keep painting and documenting all those things.

Bowne maintains her studio in Fort Collins, Colorado. “I went to Colorado State University and I just never saw a reason to leave Fort Collins.” She is an associate member of Women Artists of the West, Oil Painters of America (OPA), Outdoor Painter’s Society, and Plein Air Artist of Colorado. She has received numerous awards, and is represented by The Art Center of Estes Park and Mountain Living Studios in Manitou Springs.

An Incredible Journey To Remember At Bible Study Classes By: Doug Fox

It must have been a glorious and stunning scene – the waters of the Red Sea split in two and thousands of people walking on the dry sea bed from Egypt into freedom and eventually to a place Moses called the Promised Land. It’s the kind of stuff you’d find in an epic Hollywood production. In fact, Ben Hur fills that bill.

“From the Red Sea to the Jordan River” is this year’s study of the books of Exodus, Leviticus, and Numbers by Community Bible Study in Estes Park beginning Sept. 12 and 13.

There are two CBS classes in Estes Park. The Evening Class is coed and meets every Monday night from 5:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. beginning Sept. 12 at Our Lady of the Mountains Catholic Church, 920 Big Thompson Ave. (US 34). Hearty snacks are available for those who come straight from work. The Day Class is for women only and meets every Tuesday from 9:15 a.m. to 11:15 a.m. at Mountain View Bible Fellowship on Highway 7 at Peak View Dr. It begins Sept. 13th and also has a class for children.

Some people balk at the idea of studying the Old Testament rather than exploring the life of Jesus Christ in the New Testament. “It helps me to remember that the scriptures Jesus had when He lived with us were these very words of what we call the Old Testament,” said Robbi Telfer, Teaching Director of the Evening Class. “These are the Hebrew Scriptures, the only scripture Jesus, the disciples, Paul – all those dear New Testament folk – the “Old” Testament was the only scripture they knew and studied. And Jesus Himself said the scriptures spoke of Him (John 5.39) and explained how they were about Him (Luke 24.27). It makes sense to me to study what Jesus studied, so I can see what Jesus saw and understand better what following Him means for my life.”

Telfer says attending bible study is like breathing and eating. You can’t live without either one. The body needs spiritual food as well as edible food. Telfer puts it this way: “The way I see it, no matter how busy we are, we will take time to eat. We’ll take time to breathe! You do what you have to do to stay alive. What we don’t seem to understand is, it’s just as important to us spiritually to feed on God’s word, to breathe in what God has breathed out (see 2 Tim 3.16).”

Day Class Teaching Director Katie Soliday says this year’s study has definite application to our lives today. “’The Journey from the Red Sea to the Jordan River’ shows us an all-powerful God rescuing His people from an evil dictator. What a hero! Then it goes on to show us how to be grateful and live in the freedom He gives.”

Those who fled Pharaoh by following Moses across the divided Red Sea had trouble remembering God’s instructions on how to live their lives. In the same way, all of us fall short of the mark even today. God’s enduring love gives us hope for all our tomorrows.

The CBS registration fee is $35 for the entire year. Study guides are given to each person. Scholarships are available.

EVRPD Fall Sports And Events Little Kickers (3 & 4 Year Olds) Little Kickers is a soccer developmental program for 3 & 4 year olds. 100% parent/guardian participation is required. It is Saturday mornings only, for five weeks from 9/17/16-10/15/16. It is from 9-9:45 a.m. at Stanley Park. *The cost is $25/InDistrict and $30/Out-of-District. Early registration was until 9/6/16. From 9/7/16 – 9/12/16 there is a $10 late fee.

The mandatory parent meeting for new parents has been cancelled and all pertinent information will be emailed to each family. Each player receives a free jersey.

Youth Volleyball Leagues (4th-6th grade co-rec) This year’s volleyball program will be a combination of an instructional program, in which all the players learn and *practice together (depending on registration numbers), and will be divided into individual teams for game days and each team will have their own team jersey for the season. We welcome back Coach Katie Plassmeyer who will be coaching the whole program. She will train all the participants on practice days and coach different teams on game days, along with assistant coaches. Early registration dates: Monday, September 19 through Monday, October 17, 2016.

Program dates: November 2 through December 14. Practices will be Mondays and games will be on Wednesdays only. *Exception: the first three sessions will be practices, which are Wednesday, November 2, Wednesday, November 9, and Monday, November 14. NFL Punt, Pass & Kick Skills Challenge And Hot Dogs!

Join us for the annual NFL Punt, Pass, Kick competition and stay for free hot dogs/chips/drink! This football competition is a state-wide event held by different towns across the state of Colorado. It is a free event in which kids compete in punting, passing, and kicking. There are separate boys and girls divisions in each age group. The local first place winners of each division advance to a sectionals competition to compete against other local winners from the state. The top four first-place scorers in each division from the pool of sectionals advance to the Team Championships at an NFL stadium. Local competitors receive a participation award and the top 3 receive a ribbon. Date: Sunday, September 25, 2016. Western Slope Historians Book Signing September 16 At Macdonald Book Shop Two Western Slope historians with ties to Grand Lake and Rocky Mountain National Park will appear together for a book signing from 2 to 4 p.m. Friday, Sept. 16 at Macdonald Book Shop, 152 E. Elkhorn Ave. in Estes Park. Authors Avis Gray and Suzanne Silverthorn will be available to visit with patrons about the early days of tourism in Grand Lake and Rocky Mountain National Park with an introduction to their books, “Images of America Grand Lake” and “Around Rocky Mountain National Park.”

Both books are published by Arcadia and use dozens of historic photographs and century-old postcards to tell the story of the people, the early hotels, ranches, trails, lakes, passes and other settings that have shaped the history of Rocky Mountain National Park and its Western Gateway community.

Gray is a longtime resident of Grand Lake and owns the only bookstore in Grand County, specializing in Colorado history. Silverthorn has summered in Rocky Mountain National Park since the 1960s and currently serves as the communications director for the town of Vail, Colo. Each book retails for $21.99.

A portion of the proceeds from Silverthorn’s book are being donated to the Estes Park Museum Friends & Foundation and the historical societies across the Continental Divide in Grand County.

Dispose Your Oil And Stain Soaked Rags Properly As we finish our summer projects, keep in mind safety. Remember that oil and stain soaked rags not properly disposed can be a safety hazard. Bunching or piling oil soaked rags will create heat and could result in a fire. Keep your home and your neighbors safe by following some simple and effective measures.

Start with understanding how and why this happens and finish with practicing home safety and informing others.

Oils do not dry like other solvents through an evaporation process; rather oils and stains dry through the process of oxidation – which fuels fire. If the heat has no way to escape, the temperature will raise to a level high enough to ignite the oil and rags, and anything else in contact with the rags. A fire can spread quickly to other combustibles.

Too often people place soaked rags on newspapers. Linseed seems to be most common type of oil resulting in combus-

tion.

Among the recommendations is to dry rags by spreading out in a single layer outside (stake down so the rags do not blow away). Once completely dry (or cured), gather up and dispose the rags normally. It is recommended that you learn from your local waste management service on how best to dispose of dried rags. Oils and stains may vary and completely drying rags will vary depending on humidity, temperature and the oil on the rags.

You can also use a metal can with tight fitting lid to contain these rags. Place rags in the container, fill it with water, seal it and do no open. Find out from your local waste management service how to dispose of the container.

Whether you are working on a deck or furniture, be certain you can enjoy these for a long time by keeping your home safe. Do the right thing and dispose of oily rags safely.

Around Rocky Mountain National Park by Suzanne Silverthorn A collection of historic postcards spanning more than 100 years, this 128page book showcases the early hotels, ranches and other settings that have shaped the park’s history for more than a century.

More than 200 postcards are used to tell the story of the progression of tourism, including the significance of rail travel, the development of connecting roadways and

lodges, and the ingenuity of the men and women that built them. A long-time summer resident of Grand Lake, Silverthorn has accumulated a large collection of historic postcards which are included in the book. Contributions from other area collectors are also represented as well as images loaned by the Fort Collins Local History Archives, Grand Lake Area Historical Society and Grand County Historical Association. The book showcases the work of regional photographers familiar to postcard collectors.

These include W.T. Parke, F.P. Clatworthy, Harold Sanborn, Luke Hoffman, Carl Hildredth and regional publishers H.H. Tammen Company and Out West Photo Shop. There are scenes of sightseers using early travel routes through the Big Thompson Canyon and Saint Vrain Canyon, plus images of open-air touring buses maneuvering hairpin turns and snow drifts on the narrow Fall River Road, and later Trail Ridge Road.

The contributions of transportation pioneers F.O. Stanley and Roe Emery are included as well as a history of the Moffat Road, the rail line built by David Moffat of the Denver Northwestern and Pacific Railroad that was used by travelers headed to Grand Lake. The book also includes postcard images of early sightseeing activities, including a strenuous hike to the summit of Longs Peak.

Symbiosis: a biological interaction in which two species depend on each other mutually for survival.

There are many cases of symbiosis in Rocky Mountain National Park. Lichens are formed by the symbiotic relationship between algae and fungus. Legumes depend on soil bacteria to fix nitrogen into the soil. The list goes on and on. Out of all of these examples, it shouldn’t shock us that a bird and a tree have a mutualistic relationship. The seeds of the Limber Pine are dispersed by the Clark’s Nutcracker. The grey bird’s long beak is perfectly designed to break into the pinecone’s protected exterior and extract the seeds. The nutcrackers will carry the seeds up to 30 km, burying caches that will provide winter and spring food or will germinate to grow new saplings.

Other tips for the kitchen. On gas appliances, including, but not limited to stoves, the pilot light should burn blue. If it is yellow the burner is most likely clogged. Always fill the dishwasher before running.

A small load uses the same energy and water as a large load. Keep the gaskets on your refrigerator and freezer doors clean, cold air escapes through tiny gaps. Toaster ovens use less energy than an oven and produce less external heat. But microwaves use even less, 1/3 to 1/2 of what a full size oven requires. Recommendations I have found; set refrigerator temperature at 38 to 42 degrees; freezer at 0 to 5 degrees. Ten degrees additional drop in temperature will increase energy use as much as 25% for no increased value.

Our refrigerator recently quit working.

We paid for a service visit to be told that the filter was clogged with dust. Worse than that-we had waited too long and stressed the system too much. The final result was a new refrigerator. But the good news is refrigerators have changed a lot in the last 20 years. The new one uses less energy to maintain the food better and longer. By the way, if you are wondering how well those old appliances are keeping up, energy-wise, check-out an energy meter from the Estes Valley Library.

many backpacking adventures on the Appalachian Trail. Paul continued to hike the AT after ending his Troop 99 service, adding a new segment every year or two, eventually hiking over half of the 2000-mile trail.

After 50 years in Nashville, due to declining health Paul and Mary Ann moved here to Estes Park in 2010, to be close to their daughter. They lived at the Good Samaritan Village, enjoying the weather, elk herds, outdoors music by the Village Band and Cowboy Brad, and walks at Lake Estes. Always dedicated to church and with Paul a devoted member of the choir, in Estes that meant Shepherd of the Mountains Lutheran Church next door to Good Sam. They loved to walk there. When Paul was about 85 years old, Mary Ann reported, “We drove to church this week. I felt guilty about it, but it was 17 degrees below zero.”

Paul had MS, causing dementia, and probably a slow pancreatic cancer. As his health faltered further, in 2015 he and Mary Ann moved to Sunrise Living in Boulder, and then this past April back to Nashville to be near their son David.

Paul’s memorial service was held on August 26 at Vine Street Christian Church in Nashville, where he and Mary Ann had been members for many years. All of us who have built things, hiked, sung, or tumbled in the surf with Paul will never be the same without him, but we are what we are today because we were all here together.

This is a bend in the trail, but not the end. Award ceremonies in Troop 99 for many years ended with the benediction “May the Great Scoutmaster of all good scouts be with us till we meet again!”

Margaret Carbaugh June 24, 1934 – August 30, 2016 Margaret Lou Carbaugh, 82, passed away August 30, 2016 at the Medical Center of the Rockies in Loveland.

She was born June 24, 1934 in Goodland, Kansas to Donald and Ruth (Nelson) Kinney.

She grew up in Greeley, CO. On November 24, 1954 in Greeley she married Lon Allen Carbaugh. They traveled to multiple states as Lonnie served in the Army. After 49 years of marriage, she lost her husband on March 25, 2004.

Peggy was a homemaker for a number of years enjoying raising her four children. She returned to the work force in 1974. She worked for the St. Vrain Valley School district in Longmont until her retirement in 1998. After retirement she and Lonnie built their dream log home on family property in Estes Park.

Peggy was a member of Gamma Phi Beta sorority, P.E.O. Chapter AV Estes Park, Central Presbyterian Church in Longmont and the Presbyterian Community Church in Estes Park.

She was preceded in death by her parents and husband Lon. Peggy is survived by children Kent (Tari) Carbaugh of Bartlesville, OK; Kevin (Sharon) Carbaugh of Greeley, CO; Karey Carbaugh of Longmont, CO and Kristin (Glenn) McWilliams of Littleton, CO; seven grandchildren Heidi (Josh) Lanning, Kyle (Miranda) Carbaugh, Rusty Carbaugh, Loni Carbaugh, Cameron McWilliams, Connor McWilliams and Caitlin McWilliams; two great grandchildren Dakota Lanning and Samantha Lanning; siblings Marian (John) Stencel and Bill (Joan) Kinney; numerous nieces, nephews, friends and her faithful companion Romeo.

Memorial services were held on Saturday September 3, 2016 at Central Presbyterian Church. Cremation entrusted to Ahlberg Funeral Chapel and Crematory. Memorial contributions may be made to P.E.O. Paul M. Johnson Paul Mooring Johnson of Nashville, Tennessee died at Alive Hospice Residence in Nashville on August 19, 2016.

Paul was born on January 13, 1928, in Charlottesville, Virginia, son of Angie and Elsom Johnson.

He has now gone to join them and his sister Irma Sheahan. He is survived by his brother, Elsom Johnson Jr, and sister, Crystal Coleman. Paul is also survived by his beloved wife Mary Ann McCasland Johnson; on August 27 they would have been married for 64 years. Their children are Colleen Johnson Minard of Estes Park; David (Monica) Johnson of Kingston Springs, Tennessee; and Paul (Beth) Johnson Jr. of Canandaigua, New York. Grandchildren are Zachary Minard of Estes Park and now Denver, Beverly Minard of Estes Park and now Lincoln City, Oregon; Carina, Anna, Miquel, Lydia (Andy), and Will.

Great-grandsons are Lincoln, Lewis, and Lemuel.

Growing up in Charlottesville, Paul was proud of his paper route and large Victory Garden. He served in the US Army as a heavy equipment operator, helping with the clean-up efforts in Innsbruck, Austria at the close of World War II. Returning to Charlottesville, he received his degree in architecture from the University of Virginia. More importantly, it was at UVA he met Mary Ann. They were married in 1952.

In 1960, the family of five moved to Nashville, where Paul joined the Baptist Sunday School Board as the supervisor of the church architecture department. Later, as a self-employed architect, he continued to specialize in churches, also designing residences and other projects throughout the region. For 18 years Paul was the Scoutmaster of Troop 99 in Nashville, positively impacting his sons and hundreds of other boys. The troop went on a campout every month, a week at scout camp each summer, and

William (Bill) Culpepper William Warren (Bill) Culpepper, age 92, eight months and 18 days was born December 11, 1923 and died Monday, August 29, 2016 at his residence in Texas.

Bill was born on December 11, 1923 in , Louisiana to Wiley Henry and Edna Bares. The family later moved to Beaumont, Texas.

He proudly served our country in the United States Army as a weather observer near the Alaskan border. Upon returning home from the Army he graduated from University of Texas with a degree in Business. He joined his father at Feed Company as General Manager and eventually became owner. Bill married Mary Helen Sanders on June 18, 1950. They lived in Beaumont for many years raising their family. In 1991 they bought a home in Estes Park, Colorado where they had vacationed often. Bill and Helen loved living in Estes Park. He enjoyed playing tour guide to the many friends and family who visited them.

Bill’s hobbies included working with his hands and through the years he built furniture, added onto houses, built garages, decks, patios and a gazebo. He was always ready to lend a hand to his children and friends when needed. He loved working jigsaw puzzles and watching the stock market.

He is survived by his wife Helen, son: Barry and his wife Trisha and son David, daughter: Barbara Tapscott and daughter Donna Patton and husband John. He is also survived by his grandchildren: Jason and his wife Libby and son Jack, Travis and his wife Jamie and daughter Sophie, Danny, Brian, Kevin, Michael, Bradley Patton and Bill’s beloved “little doggie.”
