Highway 7 Water Utility Project Begins October 2 The Town of Estes Park Water Division will begin installing a water main crossing Highway 7 near Pawnee Lane on Oct. 2. The work is expected to be complete within one week, weather permitting. The project is being completed in anticipation of the work being done by CDOT for the highway improvement project beginning in 2018.

During the work, traffic control will be in place on Highway 7, diverting traffic into the turning lane to maintain traffic in both directions. Drivers are advised to reduce speed and use caution through the work zone.

The Importance Of Policy Governance Anyone who has been following the news here in Estes Park is aware of some high-profile difficulties some of our community governing boards have been going through. Whether you look at the recent mass resignation and replacement of the Hospital Board, the current turmoil with the Visit Estes Park Board, or other local boards, they all point out that the role of governance is not easy and is littered with pitfalls.

When I was in grad school working on my master’s in business, I had numerous classes on the importance of leadership and management. There have been umpteen articles and scholarly papers written on the difference between management and leadership. Is being a good manager the same as being a good leader? Can you be a good manager without being a strong leader? What is the interaction between leadership and management? It wasn’t long after I entered this profession of public management and working with elected officials that it was very clear to me there is a third critical area that is often overlooked and we are rarely trained in.

Governance is a skill and function to itself. It has elements of management and of leadership, but it is a unique and often misunderstood animal. There are literally thousands of training opportunities and books on management and on leadership, but very little opportunity to learn the nuances and skills needed to govern.

In the early 90s I had the opportunity to attend several days of intensive training with Dr. John Carver. Dr. Carver has made his career studying the operations of governing boards and their effectiveness. His work applies to non-profit, elected and corporate boards equally.

He quickly found that many boards, made up of intelligent and very competent individuals were ineffective in their role governing an organization. After observing many governing boards, he and his wife Miriam, developed the concept of “Policy Governance� in his seminal book “Boards that Make a Difference.� Since the introduction of the theories of Policy Governance, thousands of governing boards across the country have adopted the model, in some form, to improve their effective-

ness, increase efficiency, and provide more accountability to their stakeholders.

As County Manager for Larimer County, I worked with the County Commissioners over twenty years ago to institute Policy Governance as the standard for operations at the County.

I’ve also had the opportunity to help several non-profits with their governance issues, as well as having worked with other local governments who have adopted some or all of the principles of Policy Governance. Within my first year here in Estes Park, the town board expressed interest in the Policy Governance model and after several months of work, the Board of Trustees adopted their own set of Policy Governance principles, customized to our local needs. Over the years, the Board has made changes and improvements in their policies, but the fundamental core principles guiding how the Board governs has remained steady.

Now, thanks to the Estes Park NonProfit Resource Center, and the sponsorship of a number of local entities, there will be a community-wide, fullday training on Policy Governance for government, quasi-government, and nonprofit boards. The training will be taught by Bill Charney, widely recognized as one of North America’s foremost authorities on board leadership and Policy Governance.

I would strongly encourage anyone who is on a governing board, is thinking about volunteering for a governing board, or considering running for one of the local elected boards, including the Town Board, to take advantage of this opportunity to learn more about how to be an effective board member and how a governing board can lead, direct and inspire their organization.

The training will be October 22 at the YMCA and thanks to the sponsorship of Town of Estes Park, Estes Park Economic Development Corporation, Estes Valley Partners for Commerce, The Estes Park Trail Gazette, Estes Valley Library, Visit Estes Park, Estes Park Medical Center, Estes Area Lodging Association, and Larimer County, the cost is a nominal $50.

Moraine Avenue Bridge Construction To Begin October 2 Pending CDOT permit approval, construction on the Moraine Avenue Bridge Replacement is anticipated to begin on Monday, Oct. 2, 2017.

Moraine Avenue northbound between Rockwell Street and Elkhorn Avenue will be closed beginning Oct. 2, 2017, with southbound lanes to remain open until Oct. 10.

After Oct. 10, traffic control will be adjusted to one way southbound via Rockwell Street (reversing travel direction of Rockwell Street) for necessary utility work. During construction of the bridge replacement, the portion of Moraine Avenue from Elkhorn to Rockwell Street will be closed. Construction will continue through spring of 2018 with a completion date of mid-May 2018, weather permitting.

On Sept. 12, 2017, the Town Board approved the construction contract to Structures, Inc. allowing the Moraine Avenue Bridge Replacement project to commence, providing for flood mitigation and downtown resilience. This project is funded through a $2 million Community Development Block Grant for Disaster Recovery from the Col-

orado Department of Local Affairs through the Colorado Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Management.

Approval by the Town Board also provides for a temporary pedestrian bridge to be constructed, allowing access to downtown businesses via this corridor.

The sidewalk located on the west side of Moraine Avenue between Elkhorn Avenue and Rockwell Street will not be closed before the temporary pedestrian bridge has been installed over Fall River.

Additional wayfinding signage will be made available to provide other viable pedestrian routes.

During the project, the contractor, subcontractors and suppliers have been directed to park their vehicles in the preapproved locations including the area within the temporary construction fence and in the Davis Hill public parking lot at 238 Moraine Avenue rather than on public streets, other public parking lots, private business parking lots, and/or in front of businesses.

Estes Park Police Department Seeks Volunteer Auxiliary Members The Estes Park Police Department is seeking volunteers for its Police Auxiliary Unit. Auxiliary members perform uniformed, unarmed patrols and assist with special events and other activities ranging from fingerprinting and vacation checks to providing specialized assistance with investigations. Interested individuals should complete a Town of Estes Park employment application, available at www.estes.org/jobs or at the Police Department window at Town Hall, 170 MacGregor Avenue. Applications should be turned in by 5 p.m. Oct. 13, 2017. The selected candidates will be required to attend a training class Nov. 10-11, 2017.

Applicants must be at least 21 years of age, friendly and outgoing, and must enjoy working with people. Applicants should also be able to stand or walk for up to four hours, consent to a criminal and driving background check, have no

felony convictions, no more than two moving traffic violations within the past 12 months, and no warrants or misdemeanor convictions in the last five years.

A successful interview with the Police Department will also be required. Auxiliary members come from many diverse backgrounds and life experiences; police or military training is not required.

The Auxiliary Unit, formed in 2001, is a 20-member volunteer team whose purpose is to enhance the individual and collective safety of the community by assisting the Estes Park Police Department. A few of the special projects carried out by the Auxiliary team are the Citizen's Police Academy and the Blue Santa program. Members are required to donate a minimum of 96 hours per year and attend a variety of trainings.

Estes Park Medical Center Board Of Directors Election November 7, 2017 Please Vote for an Effective Team To The Editor: A strong, collaborative, effective Board of Directors is essential to having a vibrant, sustainable Estes Park Medical Center.

Since our appointments four months ago, I have had the privilege of serving on the Interim Estes Park Medical Center (EPMC) Board of Directors with Bob Dickeson, Monty Miller, Diane Muno and Bill Pinkham. From our first meeting, we have worked together effectively to protect and strengthen the financial vitality, excellent service quality, and reputation of the Estes Park Medical Center so that it will make a positive difference in the health and wellbeing of our community and others it serves, now and into the future.

Among other accomplishments, we have forged an effective working relationship with EPMC leadership and staff and established Board transparency procedures so our community has access to our meetings, materials, and emails. We have evaluated the performance of EPMC’s new CEO, Dr. Larry Leaming, and found it to be outstanding through the first six months of 2017. We are working with EPMC leadership to develop a strategic plan for the medical center that will enable us to focus EPMC

resources on services valued by our community and to further strengthen EPMC’s financial performance and service quality excellence.

With the exception of Bob Dickeson, four of us are running for the Estes Park Medical Center Board of Directors in the mail ballot election that ends on November 7, 2017.

I am writing to request your vote for our team so we can continue our efforts to provide strategic guidance for EPMC. Candidate Sandy Begley has prior distinguished service on the EPMC Board, and would be an excellent addition to our team.

Learn How To “Master The Board Game” Registration Open for Community Wide Policy Governance Training The Estes Park Nonprofit Resource Center, is pleased to present this exciting fullday, comprehensive training – Mastering the Board Game - designed for nonprofit leaders, staff, board, and community members being held at the YMCA of the Rockies on Monday, October 23, 2017 from 8:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. This incredible program will benefit those currently serving on government, taxing district, and nonprofit boards, and can provide insights to community members who are interested in serving on these boards or who would like to know more about how policy governance works.

Jerry Schrag has been a resident of Estes Park, a staff member at Upper Thompson Sanitation District, and part of the local music scene for decades.

Earlier this summer, when Jerry was struck with unexpected medical bills beyond his insurance coverage, local musicians decided to hold a fundraiser to help pay those bills. The band Tahosa is leading this event, and they are joined by the bands Night Owl and Midnight Trampoline for an eight hour (2 p.m. – 10 p.m.) celebration of fall, of life, and of Jerry Schrag. Today we hear from him about both of these things: Soon after retiring I enrolled for several classes in bird identification and drawing at the local botanical garden. The instructors stressed the importance of close observation of physical features, behavior and the natural habitat to associate a bird's features with its natural environment. Simply working on the development of these observation skills has had countless rewards in discovering the beauty, grace, and limitless variety of our feathered friends.

Birds come in multiple shapes and sizes, from the smallest Bee Hummingbird from Cuba that is unsurprisingly about the size of a bee to the nine foot tall Ostrich from Africa. They range from guillemots that can dive hundreds of feet into the ocean for fish to swifts that can live their lives off insects without ever leaving the air, to Rippon's Griffon Vulture who have been observed at 37,000 feet.

However, you do not need to travel to exotic places to find beautiful birds. Using the ebird.org website about 200 species were sited in Larimer County in the first two weeks of September. With or without feeders in your backyard, in your local town park, or in Rocky Mountain National Park, while you are hiking the trails you will most likely hear, and with a little more patience likely see, a Mountain Chickadee, a Three-toed Woodpecker, a Pygmy Nuthatch or some other avian.

Searching for birds has given my travels more fulfillment. It has almost become the primary reason to select one place over another. The joy of sighting an unknown bird for the first time is a great personal discovery. Sometimes pursuit of birds can lead to closer encounters than one might have anticipated. I have been dive-bombed by Gulls on a New Zealand beach, honored by genuflecting Bluebirds in North Carolina and carefully approached by Puffins on Staffa Island, Scotland.

Birds are free spirits that are very alert to their environment and respond quickly to sites and sounds. They are relentless and impulsive, shifting their head from side to side or up and down, bobbing their tail, scratching the ground, hopping, flitting from branch to branch, chirping, singing.

Birds are tuned to their ecosystem with coloration and behavior. They can select habitats in which their coloration provides camouflage and their behavior promotes

their survival as well as the survival of other species.

Birds keep living systems in balance.

They pollinate plants, disperse seeds, scavenge carcasses and recycle nutrients back into the earth. These are instinctive, natural behaviors that weave birds into the web of life. They create no waste nor do they significantly diminish the habitats of other species. On average birds are about one fiftieth the size of humans but there are about 50 times as many birds as humans on earth. So birds and humans roughly exhale about the same amount of carbon dioxide but unfortunately humans do not stop there.

Due to modern technology breathing is not the only activity that birds and people share. GoPro or similar cameras have been strapped to the backs of eagles and other birds so that we can share a bird's eye view.

One of my favorites is a five-minute video clip on the back of an eagle that has flown from the highest building in Dubai (https://www.youtube.com/watch? v=um8M9azpmb4). High-tech cameras have also captured slow-motion bird-flight and other behaviors. Another favorite is a slow motion barn owl attack (https://www.youtube.com/watch? v=FkP4Ro2gRl8).

Beyond the wonder and joy that birds have brought to man, their greatest contribution to mankind was serving as a model that revolutionized human transportation.

Man might never have learned to fly if he had not witnessed the ability of birds to fly or carefully studied the attributes of birdflight. Otto Lilienthal, a 19th century German engineer, spent 20 years examining and experimenting with bird-flight to develop sufficient understanding to successfully build and fly gliders. For close observation he chose to study sea gulls at the seashore. From his seminal work, Bird Flight as the Basis for Aviation, Otto wrote, “We are therefore able to clearly distinguish every movement of their wings, and knowing the peculiar properties of air pressure in connection with birds' wings, we may gradually solve some of the problems connected with their beautiful method of flight.” This work was the foundation and inspiration for the Wright brothers and other pioneering aviators.

Estes Valley Recreation And Park District Board Approves Pricing For Estes Valley Community Center Estes Valley Recreation and Park District (EVRPD), provider of numerous recreational and community activities in Estes Valley, announces the approval of membership and entrance fees for the new Estes Valley Community Center (EVCC). Memberships will go on sale starting December 1, 2017.

A fee structure that reflects the goals of serving all members of and visitors to the Estes Valley community was approved by the EVRPD Board of Directors in August. Since then, the EVRPD staff has been working on establishing a modern, customer-focused point-of-sale system to accept memberships, which they anticipate being in place by late November.

“Many of the customer-service processes throughout our district are handled by each individual business and the use of separate software systems,” said Tom Carosello, Executive Director of EVRPD. “Opening the community center will be the first step in bringing our entire district into one system to serve our community more efficiently and cost effectively.”

The Estes Valley Community Center, which has a tentative February 2018 opening date, will have daily rates, 20visit punch cards and annual memberships. Youth rates and senior (55 years and older) rates are discounted, and family memberships include two adults plus all dependent children under 19 years old living in the household. A monthly auto-pay option is also available, which allows the annual pass rate but requires a one-year commitment.

“We worked hard to develop a fair and competitive fee structure for our future members and guests,” said Teresa Jackson, Manager of Community Center Operations. “It is yet another milestone in the process of opening a one-stop recreation facility in Estes Park.”

The Estes Valley Community Center will be a state-of-the-art recreation facility offering an indoor walking/running track, weight room with free weights and selectorized machines, cardio equipment and group fitness room. There will also be a multicourt gymnasium, multipur-

pose room with attached commercial kitchen, classroom, party room, game room, lap pool (six lanes and 25 yards in length), a leisure pool with waterslide, a

lazy river with interactive play features, and drop-in childcare while using the facility.

Entrance fees and memberships will

provide access to all facility amenities.

Without a membership, users can access senior services programs, the upper and lower lobbies, the indoor walking/running track and indoor playground.

The Estes Park Bobcats picked up their first football win 42-18 over the Front Range Christian Falcons in front of a packed stadium September 22.

The game was almost even until the

Bobcats (#33) scored with 12 seconds left in the first half to go up 14-6. The Falcons fumbled and Estes Park recovered with two seconds left. Instead of taking a knee, the Bobcats threw a 30-yard pass to go into the locker room with a 22-6 lead.

The teams traded TDs in the third period before the Bobcats put the game away with two more scores in the final period.

Estes Park put the final touch on the Homecoming win when they recovered a Falcon fumble with 23 seconds left on the clock.

Get Rooted In The Outdoors Volunteer Day This Saturday Visit Estes Park in partnership with REI and Oboz Footwear Get Rooted in the Outdoors will take place this Saturday, September 30. Visit Estes Park, REI and Oboz Footwear have partnered for a day of giving back to Colorado’s favorite playground, Estes Park. Join in the fun as a team of volunteers get together for a day of tree planting and trail maintenance.

Tree planting will occur at Cherokee Draw on Lake Estes and trail maintenance will take place on the Stanley Park bike trail. All volunteers will meet at 380 Community Dr, the parking lot near Stanley Park Ball Field.

Fundraising For Darrel Guadarrama Nears $25,000 The latest effort to raise funds to support the family of Darrel Guadarrama Rojas generated another $3,338. Darrel and his mother, Minerva, were both in attendance at the fundraising dinner held on their family’s behalf on Friday, September 15th at the Estes Park Middle School cafeteria. Darrel is recovering well from his recent kidney and liver transplant and Minerva shared her gratitude to all of those who have supported her family.

The delightful evening was also a celebration of Mexican Independence Day and included delicious food that was donated by El Mex Kal and Chelitos restaurants in Estes Park, lovingly homemade tamales from Elena Martinez and Lulu Jimenez, and drinks from McDonalds.

Disc jockey, Ubaldo Evires, created a wonderfully festive atmosphere with his great Mexican music. Yadira Portillo and her dancers captivated everyone with their colorful dresses and traditional Mexican dancing. A marvelous time was had by all. A special thanks goes out to the Estes Park Middle School and Janet Bielmaier, middle school principal, for donating use of their building for the event.

Read our Virtual E-Edition at www.epnews.com Last Saturday I was determined to go on a road trip to see the aspens. Marie and Lexi were willing and ready to go with me in spite of the ugly day. We started out around 1:30 with just a slight drizzle which would progress to a flat out downpour. Even with the inclement weather the aspens shone in all their glory. If you get any opportunity, please take a ride up Highway 7 on to Nederland and beyond.

It is really worth the trip. We saw gold ones, orange ones and still some green ones, all along the road.

We also had a serendipitous journey right out of Rollins Pass. Marie shouted, “Quick, take that dirt road.” As I took the turn I noted that the road lead to the Montfort Tunnel which a sign boldly read, “Closed.” I am glad that this did not deter us. We drove to the very end finding as stated, the tunnel was closed. But the beauty and scenes along the path were so beautiful and rustic, just what we picture our open spaces of America are, or should be. We laughed when Marie spotted a moose only to realize it was a cow. They thought me daffy when I claimed I saw a bear cub, but it was just a black dog. And the aspens were all aglow, poking their lovely colors out amongst the evergreens.

Even fun trips cannot go on forever and hunger pains were rolling around in our stomachs. We stopped in Nederland at the Pioneer Restaurant for our meal and then back to Estes Park. The cold and wet of the day did not dampen our spirits or journey. The weather did get me to thinking that soup days are just around the corner. And now as I write this col-

Weed Drop Off Success!

The final 2017 Monitored Weed Dropoff was held September 23. Over 180 folks attended, 131 vehicles, and 530 large yard/paper bags of weeds were collected. Thanks for pulling your weeds and being good stewards of your property! Each car was given a paper bag for future weed collection and a weed booklet if requested. Thanks to all who made this event a success – Estes Land Stewardship Association volunteers, Town of Estes Park, Larimer County, Colorado Department of Agriculture, Estes Valley Land Trust, Ace Hardware, EP News, and individual ELSA donors. To better insure the continuation of these events, we strongly advise citizens to only deposit bagged weeds during the day and hours of Monitored Weed Drop-offs. Illegal dumping of materials at this monitored site during other times will have adverse effects on the continuation of this event.

Chicken Corn Soup 6 cups water 1 pound chicken breast or mixed with thighs. ½ cup chopped onions ½ cup chopped celery ½ cup diced carrots 2 chicken bouillon cubes 1 can cream style corn 1 cup uncooked egg noodles 1 pat of butter 3 Tbs. butter ¼ cup flour ½-1 cup milk 1/2 tsp. salt or more to taste Dash black pepper In large pot, combine water, chicken, vegetables and bouillon. Slowly bring to boil. Simmer uncovered 30 minutes, skimming off any foam that may arise. It is done when chicken is tender and vegetables are cooked. While this is cooking, make cream sauce with the butter, flour and milk.

Add noodles, pat of butter and corn to chicken and cook about 20 minutes until noodle are tender. Slowly add the cream sauce and season to taste with the salt and pepper.

monthly special events. This September the Club has organized a “Tailgate the Elk Rut.” Members will meet near the RMNP and carpool to a scouted viewing location of an elk herd. Acting Workshop The Estes Park Repertoire Theatre Company announces the second in a series of theatre workshops. The “Acting” workshop consists of two-hour sessions once each week on October 2, 9, 16, 23, 30 and November 6 from 7:00-9:00 p.m.

“Acting” will be held at the American Legion Post 119, 850 N. St. Vrain Ave. The $30 per person cost includes all six Monday evening sessions along with all workshop materials and is payable either in advance or at the door. No prior theatre experience is necessary and the workshop is suitable for ages 18 through adult.

While it is desirable to attend all six sessions of the workshop, persons are welcome to attend any of the sessions even if unable to attend all.

Additional workshops will follow to include “Stagecraft” (Spring of 2018) and

“Theatre 101” (Fall of 2018).

Since earning his Theatre Arts degree at Missouri State University, course instructor Jeff Miller has taught classes in Acting, Oral Interpretation, Theatre History and Stage Management and has assumed roles in numerous live performing arts productions as well as readers theatre, broadcast and film. A resident of Estes Park with his wife Pati, Jeff is a member of the Estes Park Repertoire Theatre Company board of directors.

The Estes Valley is fortunate to have a wide variety of arts and entertainment events and the “Acting” workshop offers an excellent way for interested persons to participate in, or simply better appreciate local theatre and related opportunities. Great Pets Need New Forever Homes

Vida is 11 months old. She is energetic and would make a great hiking or running partner. Vida can settle very nicely and does great with children and other dogs. She is a happy, friendly girl that needs some manner work but she is smart and eager to learn. She is house trained and wants to meet everyone.

Kemah is three years old, she waited in Texas for a forever home for a long time and joined us here in Estes Park. She is deaf but she is hardly different than other dogs. She would do best with a dog buddy as she loves to play with other dogs and communication with a deaf dog is a bit easier when they follow along with a hearing dog. Kemah is not a high energy dog but does enjoy an active home without small children. She could be a great running partner or enjoy a yard to play in just as well. She is a little shy at first but will be an incredibly lovable friend.

Let The Wild Rumpus Begin! At EVICS Gala Estes Valley Investment in Childhood Success will kick off its 11th Anniversary year with a formal gala on November 3, 2017 at the 800 Moraine Event Center at Trout Haven Lodge. The evening’s theme is inspired by our wild children engaged in Estes Park’s natural environmentWhere the Wild Things Are. The annual art gala is the largest fundraiser for the local non-profit that makes a huge impact in the community.

EVICS is a 501c3 that provides several services to the Estes Valley including childcare and preschool scholarships, Parents as Teachers programs, professional development and licensing assistance for early childhood professionals, and community for young families. Pro-

ceeds will go to fund these programs and others throughout the year. EVICS Playgroups Are Back

Estes Valley Investment in Childhood Success is happy to announce that our weekly playgroups will begin again starting in October! Our playgroups are designed for families with children ages 0-5 and will run every Wednesday (October Through April) from 10-11 a.m. at Mt. View Bible Fellowship Church. Playgroups are a wonderful way for families to build relationships with other families and an opportunity for children to gain critical social skills. Each week a

different theme will be chosen by our Parent Educators, where staff will be on hand to facilitate the activity and act as a parent resource-celebrating parenting successes and offering support during challenges. The schedule for the upcoming months is: October 4th, 11th, 18th, 25th, November st 1 , 8th, 15th, 29th (no playgroup Nov 22nd), Dec 6th, 13th, and 20th (no playgroup Dec 27th). ON RESPONDING TO ‘SECOND CHANCES’ Last week Californians were shaken by a cryptic message that interrupted their television programs stating that Saturday would usher in the end of the world with very violent times.

Well, obviously, the world didn’t end. But the ‘violent times’? Who knows with current global political fears? However, let’s hope it caused people to consider what they would have faced, should that ‘end-times’ forecast been fulfilled. Will it have any long term impact on their lives or choices they make? Because it someday will happen.

This caused me to wonder about how we personally respond when faced with fear producing situations, only to realize that we have received a reprieve. I would think that it should cause us to re-think some things and, when appropriate, make some changes.

It happened at a youth camp I was directing in California many years ago. On the final day of camp we wrestled with thwarting some less-than-Christian activities planned for late that night by some older campers. However, no worries! Our evening guest speaker shared a moving lesson on ‘What if Jesus had come yesterday?’ He noted that all God’s predicted environmental ‘signs’: earthquakes, floods; along with man-made traumas: wars and rumors of wars, and such, had already occurred. This meant that Jesus could come at any time‌but He hadn’t. As a result, all of us, young and old, had been given a little more time. How were we, young and old, going to live in view of that? Some deep ‘soul-searching’ went on that night, with many of the young people making a re-commitment of their lives to God and His ways. No shenanigans that night! The entire camp slept like babies. I’ve always wished that all of us, again young and old, would live each day as if ‘Christ could come at any time.’ Because He could! He will!

There are other ways that we can get our ‘second chances’, aren’t there? I met a man recently who said that he had ‘died twice’ on the operating table and was still here. I wanted to ask him how he has responded to two such ‘close calls’. Had he made any changes, having received two ‘second chances’? I couldn’t help thinking of a man named Hezekiah who was told: ‘set your house in order for you must die and not live.’ He prayed fervently that God would spare his life. God heard his prayer and gave him a ‘second chance’, an additional fifteen years. How did he respond to his ‘second chance’? His remaining life was an embarrassment to God, ultimately jeopardizing all God’s people.

Many have had diseases that could have ended their lives. Many of you have had the ‘big C’ scare that I did. The very word, ‘Cancer’, causes us to ‘expect the worst’. Sometimes we are blessed to find treatment that puts it in remission or eradicates it altogether. I hope that we consider this to be God’s ‘second chance’ and, besides doing soul searching of what we would be facing eternally had the cure not been successful, making positive changes because we have been blessed with another chance.

And what about that car accident? The same thing is true when we’ve had ‘close calls’ that could easily have ended our lives‌but didn’t, giving us a ‘second chance’. Do we make some new resolves and some changes in behavior that make God happy that He gave us that ‘second chance’? In Genesis we’re told that ‘God was sorry that He had made man’. I suspect He was sorry He had given Hezekiah his ‘second chance’.

Let’s make sure that no such thing ever happens after our ‘second chances’. Bob

Senior Center To Offer Tai Chi For Arthritis And Fall Prevention

The Town of Estes Park’s Senior Services Division is pleased to offer another Tai Chi for Arthritis class series at the Estes Park Senior Center, 220 Fourth Street. Classes will be held on Fridays, October 27 through December 8, from 9:00 to 10:00 a.m. The cost for the sixweek series is $39 for members of Estes Park Senior Citizens Center, Inc. or $53 for non-members. This evidence-based class, designed by Dr. Paul Lam and recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, focuses on relieving the symptoms of arthritis. Proven to reduce pain, Tai Chi is a safe exercise and an internal art which stresses the integration and balance of mind and body. This class is easy,

enjoyable, and ideal for beginners with or without arthritis. Participants will learn slow, smooth, continuous movements that strengthen internal muscles and loosen joints and ligaments while calming the mind. Practicing a mind-body exercise like Tai Chi builds confidence, thus reducing the fear of falling which ultimately results in less falls.

Classes will be taught by Mike Curtiss, a licensed physical therapist with over 30 years of experience in his profession. He has been a practitioner of the Wu style of Tai Chi for over 20 years and received his training from Shihan Eric Adams of Estes Park. Additionally, he completed instructor training in “Tai Chi for Arthritis� and “Tai Chi for Balance to Reduce the Risk of Falls� through the Arthritis Foundation of Australia under Dr. Paul Lam. A fundraising banquet held Friday, August 25, to help Estes Valley Meals on Wheels acquire equipment for safe food preparation and storage, was a noteworthy success, with more than $11,000 raised. Nearly 40 guests enjoyed an elegant five-course meal prepared and served by Chef Max Humbrecht of Morrison Community Living, at Good Samaritan Society – Estes Park Village. “The amount of enthusiasm generated from the community is apparent from the fact that $6,400 was received from ticket sales while gross proceeds totaled $12,400,� said Rev. Dr. Tim McLemore, Executive Director of Crossroads Ministry of Estes Park. “The equipment that will be purchased with the help of these funds will enable Estes Valley Meals on Wheels get off to a strong start when Crossroads begins coordinating the pro-

gram starting January 2018.�

The event’s success was due in large measure to low expenses made possible by the generosity of a number of sponsors, including Snowy PeaksWinery, Estes Park Medical Center, OtterCares Foundation, Enchanted Florist, Estes Park News and Estes Park Trail-Gazette.

Additional generous donations were made by Good Samaritan Society Estes Park Village and Morrison Community Living.

Total cost for the needed equipment will be between $15,600 and $26,600, depending on the quality of equipment that can be purchased. Grant applications to help with further funding are pending, and additional donations are welcomed.

The elk are amazing and wonderous animals that are fun to watch but remember, these are wild animals competing for dominance and the bulls are especially "pumped-up" at this time of year.

By: Kris Hazelton, Estes Park News Samson was Estes Park's most famous elk. He was a magnificent bull weighing 1,000 pounds with a beautiful rack of antlers, designated as 7 by 9 points. The term 7 by 9 means that Samson's antlers bore seven points on one side and nine on the other, an exceptional trophy sized rack to be sure.

Locals spoke fondly of Samson, telling how this grand bull elk was so very trusting of people. He had earned a special affection by many due to his great size and unique character. He was considered by many to be the village mascot.

Samson was a frequent visitor to the YMCA of the Rockies and had no fear of humans.

Tragically, on November 11, 1995, Samson was killed by a poacher named Randal Francis, a then 35 year old Lakewood, Colorado man looking for a trophy elk. He killed Samson with a single arrow from a crossbow fired near a cabin at the entrance to the YMCA of the Rockies.

The killing of Samson was a senseless, tragic act. Samson felt 100% safe on the grounds of the YMCA, that was a large part of the tragedy. It was a criminal offense that had absolutely nothing to do with hunting. Francis was charged with "willful destruction of wildlife" and sentenced in Larimer County District Court.

Randal Francis pleaded guilty to the charges and the sentencing was set for September 25, 1996. The punishment Francis received was 90 continuous days in county jail with no work leave allowed, a $6,000 fine, he also had to pay approximately $2,300 in court costs and he received six years probation. The senseless killing of Samson captured the attention of people nationwide. According to Colorado Parks and Wildlife investigators, "The sentencing of Francis definitely sent a clear message to poachers." Two years later, in honor of Samson, Estes Park unveiled a larger-than life bronze sculpture of the majestic elk on September 17, 1997. The beautiful statue now stands at the intersection of

Since Samson's poaching incident, there has been a greater awareness of illegal hunting nationwide. Francis' blatant act of poaching gained nationwide media attention and sparked public outcry to have our court systems take wildlife crimes more seriously. There has even been a "Samson's Law" instated which was approved on April 22, 1998. The law deals with an increase in the penalties for poaching big game animals. Although Samsons life was cut short by a poacher, his legacy lives on in Estes Park. The trophy portion of Samson, his head and antlers, was given to the YMCA as a memorial to the famed elk and it is on display at the center and each year here at Elk Fest.

Visit Comfortable Spaces: 2018 Meeting Room Reservations Beginning Wednesday, November 1, the Library will begin accepting requests for the use of its public meeting rooms for the 2018 calendar. Requests for 2018 use may be made online or by visiting the Library. Requests are taken on a firstcome first-serve basis, and all requests should be considered pending until confirmed by Library staff.

Library meeting rooms are designed and intended to support Library programs and services. As an expression of its mission, the Library also makes these meeting rooms available to members of the community for the presentation and exchange of information and opinions of all kinds. When not in use for Library meetings or events, the spaces may be requested for use by community groups at no charge.

Library Second Floor Closing Oct. 15 for Renovations The Library is set to begin a renovation of its second floor, based upon several years of studying community needs and feedback. When finished, the second level will include additional small study rooms, a quiet reading area with a fireplace, and a creative maker room. Growing Your Own Garlic By: Joan Sapp

I am working in a garden and wafting through the air is the smell of spaghetti sauce-good spaghetti sauce. Or it might only be garlic and onion in olive oil, the base for so many delicious dishes.

Gardeners can grow their own garlic and now is a good time to plant, so the bulbs can set roots and get established before the winter gets really cold.

Start, as one must for most plants, by building the soil. Dig in lots of compost or wellrotted manure and a fertilizer that is high in phosphorus and potassium rather than nitrogen, the first number in the sequence on the bag. Let this sit through the first frost while you research the type you want to plant. You can choose from two general types of garlic: hardneck and softneck. The "neck" in the names refers to the stalk that grows up-

chopped leaves or alfalfa hay 4-6 inches thick as mulch. A floating row cover or raised layer of six mil plastic increases the temperature around the bulbs all winter.

Green shoots pushing out of the mulch signal spring. The bulbs may not have grown much, yet are ready to take off with the lengthening daylight. Give the growing shoots even moisture, about 1 inch of water each week.

Somewhere around mid-July the stalk will start yellowing at the base. This is an approximate indicator of harvest time and a sign to withhold water. Over watering can result in compromised keeping qualities. Carefully dig a garlic bulb to see if you can feel the bumps of the cloves through the skins. Intact skins are important if you will store your garlic.

When the cloves are good size dig them out. Leave stalks and roots on as the bulbs dry for a couple of weeks in a well-

Genealogical Society Meeting October 12 The Estes Park Genealogical Society will meet on Thursday, October 12 at 4:00 p.m. in the Hondius Room of the Estes Valley Library. Genealogical lecturer, author and publisher Dina Carson will present “Gorgeous Graveside Photography: 50 Things I Learned While Photographing 50,000 Tombstones and Grave Markers.”

Long before Findagrave or Billiongraves, while searching the Internet for information on her own family history, Dina Carson stumbled across a website dedicated to preserving the information on gravestones and helping genealogical researchers locate the burial places of their ancestors. Out of curiosity, she searched the database for Boulder, Colorado and discovered that no one had volunteered to photograph these historic cemeteries. Since then, she has photographed more than 100 early cemeteries across Colorado (and a few elsewhere), taking more than 100,000 photographs in the process. She’ll give you her insights and tips for taking good

photographs in the cemetery Dina Carson has been involved in genealogy for more than two decades, and is currently the coordinator of the Boulder Pioneers Project, a comprehensive look at the original source documents for Boulder County during the Territorial period (1859-1876). She owns Iron Gate Publishing, and is the author of 10 new books about publishing and genealogy.

Dina brings her experience with all phases of book publishing to help firsttime self-publishers create quality family or local histories that are both believable and achievable. She will be teaching a week-long class, Writing and Publishing Family Histories in the Digital Age at the Salt Lake Institute of Genealogy in January 2018 based upon her book series.

The Society meets the second Thursday of every month from January through November in the library, offering a wide variety of programs and workshops.

Anyone interested in genealogy and family history research is welcome to attend the meetings.

Softnecks stalks are actually made up of leaves rather than a central stalk. The leaves remain soft and flexible at maturity. Hardneck types are generally hardier and better for cool weather growing.

Spanish Rojo has a much favored, true garlic flavor but being a hardneck does not keep as long as the softeneck type.

Once you’ve made your choice, slightly compact the soil so the bulb has good support. Gently break a garlic bulb into individual cloves taking care not to damage the clove. Tuck the clove into the soil-wide or root end down--and the tip just under the soil surface. Place them 3-6 inches apart in rows about 1 foot away from each other. Water well. Top with

ventilated, shaded area.

Use a similar method to grow other members of the allium family-onions and shallots- just start in early spring rather than fall. Try intermediate or day neutral onions, or bandit leeks. And don’t forget food for the soul, with flowering alliums. Do plant these in fall. Alliums tolerate drought, have no serious diseases or insect pests, and you won't ever have to worry about rodents or deer, since they seem to have no appreciation for the taste of onions — ornamental or otherwise.

During their time in Estes, the Swanks founded the G.W. Swank Photographic Emporium, Photo Hut, Penelope's World Famous Burgers & Fries, and Rocky Mountain Laser Masters. Gerry was on the board of EPURA for 17 years, and served as its president. Becky was active with the Antiquarians and various quilting groups. They were members of the United Methodist Church of Estes Park.

In 2012, the Swanks retired to Tucson, Arizona.

A popular center for the community and the arts in Allenspark may have to close its doors if it can’t raise funds before December 1. The center raised funds for renovations, which were completed in July of 2015. However, because of escalated construction costs and additional requirements by Boulder County, it currently has a $650,000 construction loan, in addition to its mortgage and operating costs. “The debt is simply crippling for a community of this size, ” said The Old Gallery Board President Dave Pinkow.

To that end, two long-time Meeker Park residents have established a $350,000 matching donation, designed to retire the construction loan. A fundraising campaign is underway to raise $350,000 before December 1.

"The Old Gallery's matching grant campaign is very exciting for us as it offers an opportunity to pay off completely our construction loan to Mile High Community Loan Fund," said Dave Pinkow, chair of the board of directors.

About $130,000 has been raised to date and $220,000 needs to be raised by December. If the matching grant is not met, pledges will be returned.

The Old Gallery serves as an art gallery for 16 local artists and hosts a wide variety of events and community services, including a twice-monthly food bank, Community Closet, health and wellness seminars, yoga and tai chi classes, discussion groups and a book club. It also hosts monthly soup nights, potlucks, square

dances and musical performances.

On Thursday, September 28, The Old Gallery is hosting a potluck with music by regional artist Rebecca Folsom, with $15 admission. On Saturday, September 30 at 5 p.m., the famed Takacs Quartet will be performing. Admission is $35 and tickets are available at brownpapertickets.com and The Old Gallery. On Saturday, October 14, Songwriters in the Round takes place, with four touring singer/songwriters sharing their music and the stories behind them. Admission is free, and donations benefit the artists.

In addition, The Old Gallery is a popular stop for area visitors requesting directions, information, restrooms, WiFi and Verizon phone service. Estes Park Girl Scout Troop 455 Earns Bronze Award Through Helping Animals Girl Scout troop 70455 has spent this year working on their Bronze Award.

The Bronze Award Project is a team effort by a Girl Scout troop undertaken to benefit the local community and is the highest award a junior Girl Scout can earn. These girls from Estes Park worked to develop their idea, research, fundraise, and implement the project.

The troop hopes to make a difference by helping dogs and cats that are looking for forever homes. Troop 70455 worked to make adoption bags for dogs and cats that are up for adoption through the Estes Park Pet Association. The bags in-

clude toys that the girls made and received from donations, homemade treats, and other essential pet supplies. The girls also made the bags out of tshirts purchased from Elizabeth Guild. Adoption bags will be provided with each dog or cat adoption.

The Girl Scouts were proud to be able to donate over 50 bags to the Pet Lodge at the Animal Medical Center and the Animal Hospital of the Rockies for the adoption of Dogs and Cats through the Pet Association of Estes Park. The troop

Shirley M. Wooden Shirley M. Wooden, 77, of Loveland, Colorado entered Heavens gates on September 19, 2017, with her family and friends by her side.

Shirley was born on October 15, 1939 in Longmont, Colorado. She had a wonderful childhood growing up in Allenspark, Colorado with her three sisters and a brother.

Shirley married the love of her life, Wayne Wooden on May 29, 1967. They soon moved to the Y.M.C.A. in Estes Park, where they spent 30 wonderful years raising seven children until they retired and moved to Loveland in 1997.

Shirley was a remarkable women and an amazing Mother, Grandma and friend. She was a beautiful person who

was all heart, she was always giving and taking care of others. She loved spending time with her family and enjoyed going out to eat, garage-sales and shopping, she was always looking for the next great pair of shoes or purse.

She will be dearly missed and forever in our hearts.

Shirley is proceeded in death by her husband Wayne Wooden. She is survived by her seven children; 13 grand children; 13 great grand children and one great-great grand child.

Memorial services will be held on Saturday, September 30, 2017 at 10:00 a.m. at the Y.M.C.A of the Rockies, Hyde Chapel. Officiated by Reverend Adam Johnson.

Dan Brown Estes Park resident and businessman, Dan Brown died at home Sunday morning, September 24, 2017. He was 65 years old.

Daniel Earl Brown was born October 11, 1951 in Bad Axe, MI. His parents are Calvin and Violet (McIntosh) Brown. Dan graduated from Bad Axe High School and received his Bachelor’s Degree in Political Science and General Studies from the University of Michigan.

On May 7, 1977, he married Nancy Griffin in Estes Park, CO. Dan moved to Estes Park in 1973, where he was selfemployed for 32 years at Dan Brown Construction and Giant Track Real Estate Company. He enjoyed volunteering his time and was involved as a parentvolunteer for the Estes Park Ski Team, and was a board member of the Estes Valley Contractors Association and the Estes Park Board of Realtors. In his spare time, he enjoyed skiing, golfing, playing the guitar, traveling and learning. He was also a long-time volunteer at the Longs Peak Scottish Irish Highland Festival.

Dan is survived by his wife Nancy of Estes Park, a son Joe Brown of Denver, CO, daughter Emily Lizotte, her husband Quinn, and granddaughter Julia Lizotte of Flagstaff, AZ, as well as his parents of Bad Axe, MI and 10 brothers and sisters:

Mark Otis Selby Mark Otis Selby passed away at home on Monday, September 18, 2017 after a long battle with cancer.

The Nashvillebased recording artist, songwriter, session guitar player and producer released albums on Vanguard & ZYX Records and his songs have been recorded by a wide array of artists.

With Kenny Wayne Shepherd, his cowrites include “Deja Voodoo,” “Slow Ride,” “Last Goodbye,” and “Blue on Black,” which was #1 for 17 weeks and Billboard’s Mainstream Rock Song of the Year. He wrote the Dixie Chicks’ first Number One and Grammy award winning single “There’s Your Trouble” as well as having songs recorded by many other artists including Wynonna, Little Big Town, Trisha Yearwood, Johnny Reid, Jo Dee Messina, Lee Roy Parnell, Keb’ Mo’ & Rick Brantley.

Born and raised in Oklahoma, Selby spent his youth harvesting wheat and playing in bands throughout the Great Plains. He attended Fort Hays University in Hays, Kansas where he earned a bachelor’s degree in music. Selby was inducted into the Kansas Music Hall of Fame in 2016.

An avid hiker and outdoor enthusiast, Mark also resided in Estes Park, Colorado, with his best friend Tia. They married on top of Mount Chiquita in

the Rocky Mountain National Park on July 4, 2001.

MOS (as he was affectionally known by those closest to him) was nothing if not a metaphysical seeker, thick book reader and deep thought thinker, with a wicked sense of humor and a vast knowledge of dang near everything: particularly that of music, history and the blasted human condition. He stayed steadfast and true and razor sharp to his heroic end.

Mark Otis Selby is survived by his other half and songwriting partner, Tia Sillers.

He is also survived by his entire immediate and sprawling Selby family and an equally vast cadre of friends he loved like brothers and sisters.

Wayne Hoelscher Estes Park resident, Wayne Hoelscher died at the Estes Park Medical Center on Thursday, September 21, 2017. He was 93 years old. Charles Wayne Hoelscher was born March 1, 1924 on a farm near Brooklyn, IL. His parents were Roy and Lora (Manlove) Hoelscher. Wayne grew up on his grandparent’s adjoining farm after his grandfather suffered a stroke. He attended school in Brooklyn through the 11th grade and since 12th grade was not offered, he graduated from high school in Augusta, IL. After graduation, he enlisted in the Army Air Corps in 1942 at the age of 18, attended Flight Radio School and was stationed at New Castle, DE. During his three years, he assisted in delivering fighter bombers to troops around the world, and made 72 flights across the Atlantic Ocean. Wayne married Edna Downs on November 28, 1945 at New Castle Army Air Base in Delaware. After being discharged, the couple lived near Brooklyn, working in a garage owned by his brother and him. In 1949, he went to Western Illinois University in Macomb, received his bachelor’s degree, then on to The University of Illinois in Urbana and received an M.S. in

Agronomy. Wayne’s career started as a sales representative and continued as farm advisor and in 1988 he retired from the University of Illinois College of Agriculture Cooperative Extension Service. Wayne and Edna enjoyed retirement volunteering as campground hosts and traveling in their motor home. Edna died October 27, 1992. On January 4, 1995, Wayne married Joan Buckwalter Miller in Green Valley, AZ. In 2006, the couple moved to Good Samaritan Village in Estes Park. There, they were members of the United Methodist Church. Joan died May 28, 2013. Wayne is survived by his son Chris and his wife Debra and their daughter Jessica of Bloomington, IL and daughter Jean Seymour and her husband Pat and their son Dirk of Couer d’Alene, ID. A memorial service was held Tuesday September 26, 2017 at the United Methodist Church.
