the April 2014 Municipal Election ballot. Sixty percent of this new revenue is directed to street repairs and 12.5 percent is slated for trail expansion work.

We thank the voters for taking this need to heart and agreeing to tax yourselves and our guests to create a funding stream that is currently generating about $300,000 for trails expansion and $1.44 million each year for street repairs for the 10-year period that sunsets in 2024. The Town's street network is 59 miles long, and our goal is to bring the average street network PCI score back up to at least 70, with no street falling below 30. We hope to resurface an average of 6.6 miles of streets each year. The Town calls our spending plan for these funds the 2024 Street Improvement Program (STIP).

This year Public Works bid and awarded three street maintenance contracts. We are proud to report that we completed all the work on time and under budget. We spent $199,975 sealing cracks on about 39 miles of our net-

lanes where Dry Gulch Road intersects Red Tail Hawk Drive and U.S. 34. Dry Gulch Road is expected to be paved and open to the public before the Labor Day

weekend. The most exciting component of this project -- the trail extension under U.S. 34 connecting to the Lake Estes Trail -- is scheduled to be completed by the end of September. In total we are on track to spend $4.84 million for contracted street maintenance work on 7.5 miles of Town-owned streets in 2016.

Meanwhile, our Ballot Issue 1A sales tax-funded Spray Patcher continues to patrol the streets each week and preemptively repair small potholes before they grow into "wheel-eaters." Did you know you can track the daily progress of the Spray Patcher by clicking on our dynamic map at www.estes.org/potholepatching? So far, the Patcher has currently performed over 1,278 repairs in 2016.

Of course none of this work gets done by itself. The 2016 budget also includes $220,000 for personnel and equipment costs to continue operating the Spray Patcher and manage the various contracts to make up the annual Street Improvement Program. We thank our Public Works Streets Division and Engineering Division staff for their strong commitment to stewarding our sales tax dollars and managing all this work. Be sure to stop and talk to them personally when you see them working in your neighborhood.

The Public Works Department recognizes and appreciates the confidence extended to us to be good stewards of your tax dollars for street repairs. We're committed to protecting the sacred trust between our staff and our citizens.

Town Honors Volunteers With Musical Art Installation On Riverwalk

Dedication ceremony August 31 to honor 2015 volunteers The Town of Estes Park is honoring its dedicated volunteers, including the 450 individuals who served in 2015, with an ensemble of three interactive musical art installations along the Riverwalk.

The instruments were installed this summer and a dedication ceremony was held on Wednesday, Aug. 31 at 9 a.m. at the site of the installation. A plaque will be installed to honor the volunteers.

In 2015, 486 volunteer roles were filled by 453 volunteers, meaning 33 people volunteered for more than one position.

These volunteers contributed a total of 38,131 hours. According to federal government data, the value of a volunteer’s time is equivalent to $25.10 per hour in Colorado. Volunteers therefore gave time worth $957,091.61 to the community through the Town in 2015.

Previously the Town held an annual Volunteer Recognition Luncheon. Attendance for this event has been in decline, yet volunteer managers in various Town departments report their smaller, individual recognition events have almost perfect attendance. Moving forward, the Town will provide resources to continue promoting these individual, departmental events to recognize and thank its volunteers. The Town could not provide such a high level of service without the help of its volunteers.

Vehicle Break-Ins At RMNP

On Sunday, August 21, between 11 a.m. and 11:45 a.m. two vehicles were broken into at the east Alluvial Fan parking lot in Rocky Mountain National Park. Vehicle windows were broken and purses containing credit cards were stolen. Several of these credit cards were used in local area businesses immediately after the break in.

An image of a man purchasing a variety of camping equipment with these stolen credit cards was captured on video surveillance. Park rangers are working in conjunction with the Estes Park Police Department and Larimer County Sheriff ’s Office, since the fraud-

ulent credit card activity took place outside the park.

Park rangers are seeking assistance from the public in identifying this person of interest. If you have information concerning this incident or this person of interest, please call the following recorded tip line at Rocky Mountain National Park at (970) 586-1290. If you wish, you can remain anonymous. Or call your local law enforcement agency for assistance.

When parking at trailheads in Rocky Mountain National Park please be alert for any suspicious activity and do not leave valuables in vehicles.

The charge(s) are merely an accusation and the defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.

On August 21 at 7:46 p.m. police stopped a 44 year old male driver from Denver, CO who was called in on a REDDI report for weaving. Upon contacting the driver, the male was found to be driving with a BrAC of .054 and he was charged with DWAI and later released to a responsible person.

On August 23 at 11:30 p.m. police were called to the 1800 block of Fish Creek Road where they charged an 88 year old male with attempted first degree murder and domestic violence against an 86 year old female. The male was taken into custody and transported to Larimer County Detention Center.

On August 24 at 9:37 a.m. police received a report from a person at 1600 Manford Ave. of a theft at the school. Upon further investigation, a 14 year old female was charged with theft of less than $500 and she was referred to the Restorative Justice Program.

On August 25 at 7:33 a.m. police were called to the 400 block of S. St. Vrain Ave. on a report of unsecured trash. On scene a 41 year old male from Estes Park was cited with a wildlife protection ordinance violation.

On August 27 at 12:22 a.m. police were notified of unsecured trash in the 1300 block of Big Thompson Ave. and an 18 year old female was issued a citation for a violation against the wildlife protection ordinance.

Larimer County Extends Fire Restrictions On Open Fires & Fireworks To September 15, 2016 The Board of Larimer County Commissioners today extended restrictions currently in effect on open fires for the unincorporated portions of Larimer County. Also extended are restrictions on the use of fireworks, public firework displays and incendiary devices. The restrictions are in effect until September 15, 2016.

Due to hot, dry conditions, the danger of wildfire, forest and grass fires is very high in Larimer County. Today’s extension of restrictions are based on a recommendation from the Larimer County Sheriff ’s Office and were unanimously approved by the Board of County Commissioners.

Restricted Today: · No open fires, including camp or cooking fires · Smoking in the open is not allowed, including trails, parks and open spaces · No fireworks or firework displays · No incendiary devices, including sky lanterns, exploding ammunition, exploding targets, and tracer ammunition · No welding Not Restricted: · Contained open fires in permanently constructed stationary masonry or metal fireplaces specifically designed for the purpose of combustion · The use of internal or external combustion engine with a spark arresting device properly installed, maintained and in effective working order and

meeting published standards · Fireplaces or wood stoves located inside permanent structures · Fires in commercially operated wood and/or charcoal fired grills designed for cooking · Charcoal fired grills when used at a private residence and location on a non-combustible surface of at lease ten feet in diameter · Fires such as those in camp stoves and grills using gas or pressurized liquid · Welding and other torch work within an enclosed building · Outdoor welding and other torch work provided that: - The area where the welding or other torch work is to be performed is free of vegetation for at least thirty feet in all directions -Wind speed is less than 10 mph -There is sufficient amount of fire suppressant immediately available to suppress any fire that may be started · Fires in air curtain burners The Sheriff may give limited exemptions from these restrictions based on his pre-approval and inspection.

Estes Park Museum Closed For Labor Day; Hydroplant Closes For The Season

The Estes Park Museum will be closed on Monday, September 5, 2016 in recognition of Labor Day. It will reopen on Tuesday, September 6. The Museum will observe summer hours through the month of October, open Monday through Saturday, 10:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m., and Sunday, 1:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m. From November through April, the Museum will be on winter hours, open Friday and Saturday, 10:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m., and Sunday, 1:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m. Visit the Museum’s permanent exhibit Tracks in Time to learn about Estes Park’s history from the Ice Age to today. There are several updates to the exhibit including High Country Hazards and Tragedies in Time that chronicle the natural disasters that have occurred in Estes Park. Hands-on activities throughout the gallery engage visitors of all ages.

Historic Fall River Hydroplant Closes for the Season on September 4 The Historic Fall River Hydroplant, listed on the National Register, was built

by F. O. Stanley to provide electric power to the Stanley Hotel when it opened in 1909 and was the exclusive source of electricity for the Town of Estes Park until the 1940s. Visit the Hydroplant to learn the details of its fascinating story including artifacts that belonged to Mr. Stanley. Hours are 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. daily except Mondays. Located at 1754 Fish Hatchery Road, the Hydroplant’s last day to be open for the public in 2016 will be Sunday, September 4. Admission is free.

Labor Day Holiday Closure Larimer County Offices, Courts, and Landfill will all be closed on Monday, Sept. 5, 2016 for the Labor Day Holiday.

Critical services at Larimer County are not interrupted by closures.

ARD Meeting September 9 At the September 9th meeting of the Association of Responsible Development, Col. Robert “Terry” Gilbert, AICP, Director of Community Development for Larimer County, will discuss the results of the Short-term Rental Commission's (Task Force) agreed upon points and recommendations. Col. Gilbert will summarize the Task Force results at the meeting from 10-11:30 a.m., which is open to the public. Members may attend and participate in the 8:30 a.m. business meeting, where future topics will be reviewed. Doug, a dentist who lives in Alaska, is currently on a 15 month National Park Service Centennial road trip/speaking series. He was a seasonal park ranger in Grand Teton National Park for seven years in the 1970s where he rescued an old poster bound for the park dump. Intrigued by the unique style and beauty of the Works Project Administration (WPA) art, he embarked on a twenty year search, discovering the remnants of this unique poster art in Harpers Ferry, West Virginia. He was only able to find black and white negatives of poor quality. The posters were long gone.

With the onset of World War II, poster production stopped with only 14 park designs completed and after the war they disappeared into history. Heartfelt Thank You From The Wedan Family

To The Editor: August 31st marked the anniversary of the tragic accident that claimed the lives of my three grandsons, Mason, Austin and Hunter and my beautiful daughter-in-law Tori.

On behalf of my family, especially Bjorn Wedan, I would like to express my gratitude to the community of Estes Park for their love, support and understanding during these past two years. Although our family is scarred for life, I would not have been able to be here today without all of you helping

me through the most difficult time of my life. A special thank you to Father McCready, all my dear friends, past students and my family.

The community of Estes Park has recently withstood many adversities. Floods, fire, and unexpected passing of friends and loved ones. However, we are truly Mountain Strong and I am so proud and grateful to be part of this community.

In the past when someone would ask me what my favorite season was, I would always say summer. It was a default and a no-brainer. Easy question and easy answer! Now, though, I have a harder time picking a favorite.

I do love summer. I love bare feet, watermelon, windows open, suntanned shoulders. I appreciate early sunrises and late sunsets, ice cream cones while walking along Elkhorn amongst other families, appointments at the Mutt Hutt so Harley can be shaved and therefore, much cooler. We spend time at BBQs, on earliest morning hikes, out on patios drinking cold beers. Summer brings busy schedules and lots of energy and squeezing as much fun into every day.

I do love fall. I love chilly mornings, snuggly sweaters, golden aspens, the release of my favorite fall beer (Pumpkick).

I appreciate weekend festivals, elk bugles, Halloween celebrations in the middle of the street. We spend time leaf peeping on “one last trip” up Trail Ridge Road, costume-making with materials spread across our kitchen counter and table, recipe-Pinning for cold weather comfort food. Fall brings cool downs and relaxation and a sigh of relief that we made it, again.

I do love winter. I love the quiet that comes with a new snowfall, the cheerfulness of twinkly lights lining our downtown, the ability to go to Safeway at any time of day. I appreciate crockpot soups,

football games (and snacks!), holiday music on my stereo and in all the stores. We spend time breaking trail with our snowshoes, searching relentlessly for the perfect Christmas tree, daydreaming about calm days and no wind. Winter brings time with family and cozy nights at home and community, back together again.

I do love spring. I love the slow lengthening of days, the surprise of weather warm enough for shorts and Chacos, the river rushing with snow melt . I appreciate muddy trails, guests returning, even post-holing in the high country. We spend time walking around the lake with a wide berth for mama elk, stuffing away our winter coats only to pull them back out for yet another snowstorm, cleaning the house with windows open and cold, fresh air filling the rooms. Spring brings revival and new life and “here we go again!”

I do love summer. And fall. And winter.

And spring. I love the change. Each brings the promise of new opportunity and excitement, each gives me yet another reason to love life in Estes Park.

We’re in my favorite season now.

Daily Lunch Specials The hikes we take in RMNP are rich with wilderness entertainment: wildlife appearances on a stage of stone with a wildflower and pine tree backdrop and waterfalls for sound effects.

No matter how stunning the scenery is, however, on very long hikes or very hard hikes, your focus eventually turns from the beauty around you to the physical challenge before you. As you push onward and upward, your breathing becomes steady and you establish a beat to your step. A rhythm gets into your head, conversation ceases and you are left to your… …earworm.

It burrows deep into your brain and will not leave. It plays over and over, keeping time with your breathing and your step.

The words may fade in and out but the tune still broadcasts in your brain-radio again and again.

Why Are There So Many Songs About Rainbows?

Wake Up, Little Susie Jack the Knife (Oh the shark bite, blah, blah, teeth white) There’s neither rhyme nor reason why a particular song shows up in your head. It could be a word you read or heard recently, a music line nested inside another song, or it could be triggered when you felt an emotion associated with a certain song. I must admit that the number of songs written about rainbows has never really provoked a strong gut reaction, but the Kermit the Frog song once held a hike hostage and didn’t let go until I could ask my mom to recite the alphabet backwards for me. That knocked Kermie right off his little green butt and out of my head.

It’s bad when a musical doodle is wiggling its way deeper into your prefrontal cortex but some of the words are missing. Over and over the song plays but certain lyrics have gone AWOL. Try as you might, you can’t get them back into formation. I could pull my hair out sometimes, trying to locate an out-to-lunch bunch of words. (I was going to say “pull my ear hair out…” but decided against it. Women don’t have ear hair. That’s a guy thing. Women have earworms, which is a whole different ball of (ear) wax.)

What’s worse is when you have to listen to someone else’s earworm. You can be perfectly absorbed on a flat section of trail,

thinking about whether you should have played the king of hearts or the ten of spades last night when from behind, your hiking partner starts singing, “I believe I can fly. I believe I can touch the sky.” After about seven times of that, you stop short and turn around.

“Keep your earworm to yourself!” you scold, and she looks at you like you just yanked on her ear lobe. She was oblivious to her earworminess.

Studies show this “stuck song syndrome” happens to women and men equally but the repetitive songs last longer for women and in turn, drive women crazy more than men. (Men drive women plenty crazy, just not quite as much as an earworm does.)

The British Journal of Psychology reported that studies concluded that an earworm usually lasts 15 to 30 seconds. But I can tell you that if you’re hiking, they last for h-ou-r-s.

I have a theory that we are each born with an earworm buried deep within our cranium and it surfaces from time to time, usually when you don’t want it to. Mine is an unidentifiable, floating tune played slow and heavy on an organ. Fortunately, the only time I hear it is when I am under the influence of nitrous oxide in the dentist’s chair.

So what to do? When an earworm starts doing the reel (to reel) in my head, I strike up a conversation with a fellow hiker. That works until we sink back into solitude and the tune starts up again. Unbelievable! I try introducing another song into my temporal lobe—even asking my hiking companions to sing along. Happy Birthday never gets stuck so that’s a good one to use as an eviction notice. But nobody wants to sing Happy Birthday if there’s no birthday to celebrate. (It’s repetitive enough that it should be an earworm. Why isn’t it, yet I Feel Pretty from West Side Story is?)

Finally I have to revert to the worst of the worst. I sing It’s A Small World After All at the top of my lungs. I figure if I have to have an annoying song looping in my brain, everybody else within ear(worm)shot should have to suffer too.

Special Evening Programs For The Labor Day Weekend Highlight Longs Friday, September 2: Longs Peak: Experience the Keyhole Route Do you aspire to reach the summit of Longs Peak? Are you inspired by the lofty rock faces and pinnacles of Rocky Mountain National Park’s highest mountain? Join climbing rangers Everett Phillips and Mitch Musci, on a photographic journey to the top, and back down safely. This free program will be held Friday, September 2, at 7:30 p.m. at the Beaver Meadows Visitor Center.

Mitch and Everett will present aspiring mountaineers with a realistic picture of the challenges encountered on Longs’ most popular adventure; the Keyhole Route. Topics covered will include a detailed description of the route, an understanding of proper preparation, and strategies for a safe ascent.

Everett Phillips has been involved in mountain rescue work for over a decade.

As a ranger on Longs Peak his interest in rescue has expanded to include risk management and accident prevention.

He is inspired by the challenge of maintaining his sense of adventure while also becoming more responsible in his mountain excursions.

Mitch Musci grew up in Austin, Texas, and quickly gained an appreciation for the mountains through his family’s annual summer trips to the San Juan Mountains of Colorado. His many years of experience climbing mountains

helped steer Mitch into his current position as a Longs Peak Climbing Ranger.

Saturday, September 3: Perspectives of Longs Peak Longs Peak, the tallest of the mountains in Rocky Mountain National Park at 14,259 feet, has beckoned visitors for many decades. To climb it has been the goal of many. The magnificent view from the summit offers a unique perspective on preserving our wilderness here at Rocky Mountain National Park.

When it was first seen from a distance

by Stephen Long, it was thought to be so difficult to climb that no one would achieve it. It was truly the wilderness then as it continues to be today.

In this program given by Paige Lambert, explore how this most iconic peak in Rocky has inspired wilderness preservation for over 100 years. Hear the history of some of the first ascents of Longs Peak and what is being done to make sure the experience is preserved for generations to come. This program will be given at Beaver Meadows Visitor Center on Saturday, September 3 at 7:30 p.m.

Paige is a ranger who has previously worked in the Environmental Education branch of Interpretation. She has guided young visitors to understand and appreciate the importance of preserving the wilderness in Rocky Mountain National Park.

Boyz In The Hood: Elk Behavior During The Rut, Or Mating Season

By: Chris Daubin During the rut or mating season (September and October in Estes Park), bull elk have only two things on their minds.

One is reproduction, or mating with cow elk, the other is fighting to keep their harem of cows from rivals. These bulls are literally looking for trouble.

During mating season, bull elk have huge amounts of testosterone flowing through their blood and will attack anything they perceive as a rival. This could be an elk, a motor vehicle or a human. A herd bull (a dominant bull with a harem of cows), is the baddest thing around, and doesn’t mind proving it. These herd bulls will often lose 20 percent of their body weight during the rut.

A bull without a harem of cows is usually not in a social mood and is looking to vent his frustrations on anything handy.

Think of these bulls without harems (aka satellite bulls) as high school boys that just got kicked out of the dance, and aren’t happy about it. They hang around the outside of the dominant bull’s harem, looking for a chance to steal a cow.

The elk on the YMCA campus, in Rocky Mountain National Park, and all of the Estes Valley are accustomed to humans,

and aren’t afraid of them, as elk in other places of the country are. Most visitors to the Estes Park area don’t live around wild animals, and don’t have a working knowledge about their habits.

These elk will allow humans to get way too close before reacting to the intrusion

on their “space.” This creates a potentially dangerous situation, and a human invading an elk’s space can be seriously injured. They are wild animals that tolerate humans, to a point. Elk often won’t give you a clue that something is about to happen, they will just show you. If they charge and catch you, it will hurt.

At the very least: 1. Give these elk plenty of room, at least 15 yards or meters.

2. If a bull is posing and eyeballing you, you better back off.

3. Don’t get in between a bull and cows, between bulls, or in the middle of any elk herd.

4. Don’t surround any wild animal; leave them an obvious escape route.

Next Estes Park Archives Program The final proofs are back for the first booklet in the Sanborn series, which will be available for sale by early October 2016.

"Basic Sanborn" is the title of the 112page introduction to identifying and collecting 20th century black and white photo-postcards produced by Denver's Sanborn Souvenir Company beginning in the 1920s.

Although some of the Sanborn postcards are quite rare, this volume will deal with the "common" postcards, those that proved popular with tourists and over their lifetimes were printed in numbers greater than 1000, according to records kept by the curio distributor, which is still in existence.

"There are at least 18 different series of Sanborn photo-postcards for Colorado and Wyoming, but most of the examples in this booklet will come from northern Colorado, because they prove to be representative of the basic types and subtypes of the more than 15,000 views out there," said John Meissner, who has spent the past five years researching and assembling sets of Sanborn postcards.

"As well, these series from northern Colorado, including the G-series from Grand Lake, J-series from northeastern Colorado, N-series from Front Range towns, and R-series from the Estes Park and Rocky Mountain National Park area, happen to be the ones where the most complete production numbers and sets of negatives were maintained through the years."

Meissner fully recognizes the potential distress caused by putting actual "mintage figures" out there for the first time. "I think this volume will be taken as 'bad news' by most postcard collectors and dealers, because real numbers will be presented on how many of a particular postcard is potentially still around, based on how many were ini-

tially made, which will tend to adjust values downward," Meissner said. "I'm pretty unsympathetic to this complaint, because the various factors used to determine what a vintage postcard is worth, in particular presumed rarity, should be based on reality rather than bluffing or guesswork. Besides, the 'better news' will come in subsequent booklets, where the truly rare and 'ultra-rare' Sanborn postcards will be revealed, most of which are likely currently undervalued."

Meissner will share some of the highlights from this ongoing work at a breakfast program in the back room of Molly B's on 200 Moraine Avenue next Tuesday, September 6, at 9:00 a.m. The program and coffee is free, and all are welcome to attend.

On Thursday, September 8 the attendees will tour to Estes Park, home of the notorious Stanley Hotel. Tour members will be treated to a ghost tour of the hotel, and a historic trolley tour of the town and part of the Rocky Mountain National Park. Tours will be finished off with an elegant buffet lunch in the Stanley's vintage Music Room.

As part of the Estes Park outing, the Lincoln Club will display their cars along with vehicles from the Estes Park Car Club on the south lawn, just off the frontage road in front of the Stanley Hotel. The public is invited to view these impressive, timeless vehicles from 11:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on tour day, Thursday, September 8. There is no charge for admission to the show.

The Western Region Meet will be held at the Westin Hotel in Westminster, Colorado. This location affords the Western Meet plenty of room for meetings and a large parking lot for a car show, to be held on Saturday, September 10. Plenty of gorgeous Lincolns, as well as other cars, representing various years will be displayed from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

There is no admission fee and the public is encouraged to visit and admire examples of the by-gone era of automobiles.

Participants Will Learn How Proper Diet Can Help Them Prevent and Survive Cancer The Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine (PCRM), a national nonprofit organization that promotes preventive medicine, particularly good nutrition, and supports higher standards in research, is offering a cooking course designed to help local residents prevent and survive cancer through proper diet and nutrition.

“The single easiest and best thing most of us can do to prevent cancer or its recurrence is to eat right,” says Susan Levin, M.S., R.D., the director of nutrition education for PCRM. “Approximately a third of all cancer deaths in this country are due to poor diet.”

The Rx for better health? It’s a low-fat vegetarian diet. Load up on fruits, vegetables, and whole grains, Levin says; they’re naturally low in fat, chock-full of fiber, and filled with cancer-fighting antioxidants and phytochemicals. Cut down on fatty foods and added fats and oils, particularly saturated fats, which have been linked to an increased risk of breast, colon, and prostate cancer. Likewise, look for healthy substitutes for dairy products such as milk, cheese, and yogurt, which have been implicated in

the occurrence of breast and colorectal cancers.

The challenge, Levin acknowledges, is not only to teach people which foods are good for them, but also to show them how to make the foods taste good. Each class centers on important cancernutrition topics as local cooking instructor Chazz Glaze guides students through the preparation of tasty and easy-to-prepare recipes.

Estes Park’s Center Stage School of Dance and Gymnastics has started registration for the fall session of children, teen and adult classes. The Fall Session I will run for eight weeks, starting on Monday, September 12th and running through November 5th. Center Stage offers weekly classes to children starting at age one, all the way up through adult classes. This year we are offering multiple classes in Hip-Hop, jazz, tap, lyrical, Irish Dance, classical and contemporary ballet, pointe and pre-pointe, acrobatics/tumbling, gymnastics, and Mommy & Me classes. We are also continuing with a new season of Competitive Dance Teams where children ages nine through 18 have the opportunity to compete at regional competitions throughout the state of Colorado. THAT PESKY LIGHT On January 1, 2007 an Adams Airlines Boeing 737 took off from Java with 102 persons on board. During their short flight the plane disappeared from radar. A few days later parts of the jetliner were discovered in the sea, including the voice recorder. As investigators studied the cabin crew members’ voices they learned that a red light began flashing on the dash. The crew directed all their attention to it and, in the words of the investigators: “They simply forgot to fly the airplane!” All 102 aboard died.

Jesus saw religious leaders doing the same in religious practices and attitudes. He said: “You focus on tithing mint, anise, and cumin…the ‘red lights’…and have forgotten weightier matters of the Law: justice, mercy, and faithfulness…’flying the airplane’.” He solemnly implied that all who follow their practices will ‘go down’.

As I read again of that tragic incident ten years ago, it dawned on me how often that happens in other situations as well. For example: in the counseling world, that I know well, we are often approached by a person who shares a ‘problem’, only to find that it wasn’t the ‘real’ problem at all, it was simply the ‘presenting problem’…the ‘red light’…that often draws us away from the ‘real problem’…that threatens to ‘crash the plane’. For example: in marital and family situations where a family member drinks heavily, the ‘problem’ that is often presented is ‘We don’t communicate’ or ‘We have financial problems’ or ??? while the alcohol use is the major culprit and must be addressed and improved or it will keep other problems in the family from being resolved.

We often observe a tendency in families to do something that we noted in the airline incident. How often we have witnessed, sadly, fathers or mothers who constantly focus on the ‘red lights’ in their children’s lives, instead of focusing on how the ‘plane is flying’. A little boy went to register for school and, when asked his name, he said, innocently, ‘Johnny Don’t’. His parents, sadly, tended to be ‘red light’ focused parents. Child experts tell us that every child needs at least eight positives for every one negative they hear from their parents to grow and develop self-esteem, so essential to becoming a successful and productive adult.

The same thing is true in our relationships with our spouses. How often partners focus in on the ‘red lights’ in their husband’s or wife’s behavior. Words like: ‘Thank you!” “You’re fantastic!” “What a great meal!” “I love you!” “Thanks for working so hard for us!” etc. are all too seldom heard. I remember hearing a story of a man whose wife was very depressed. They went to a counselor’s office where, very quickly, the counselor sensed what the problem was. He said, “Here’s what your wife needs more of!” He took the woman in his arms and drew her to him. Her husband immediately noticed how pleased his wife became. He said, “Well, that’s great! I’ll bring her in here every day next week, except Wednesday, that’s my day for golf.” That ‘plane’ is likely going down.

Please take time to determine what receives the majority of your focus with your spouse, children and other relationships: the ‘pesky red lights’ or, the big picture, ‘flying the plane’. Unless you do, your relationships may become ‘dead in the water’. (Bob)

If you’ve driven Highway 7 in the past several months, you may have noticed a green and white sign that’s gone up on the building just north of Cables Pub & Grill.

The Vegetable Peddler, a hydroponic produce center, started setting up shop in

EPNEWS.COM romaine, poc choi (a cousin of bok choy), and more was under a sunny-like, cheerful light. One plot holds 2,760 plants and the other, 2,520. Large fans were blowing in each room in order to circulate CO2, and the temperature was both comfortably warm and cool. I joked that we’d be coming by in the dark days of winter, just to get a happy, summery feeling.

When Spencer took me up close and personal with the plants, he showed how the roots are not “planted” in any soil, but instead just resting in a constant stream of mineral water. I commented that his water bill must be huge. “Actually,” he said, “we only use 25 gallons per day.” That’s for the entire operation! The water is circulated through a double-barrel filtration and can be recycled as it runs through the growing plots. The real utility bill is their electric, but we talked about the possibility of solar panels once the business gets going. Spencer also showed me the flats where microgreens are grown, explaining that they’re made of a sawdust that’s compostable. Restaurants take the entire flat when they’re picking up their orders, and when they’re done, the flats are returned and Spencer drives them to a commercial compost center in Boulder. From one detail to the next, I was amazed at how self-contained, organized, and clean the

entire system (really, the whole building) is.

Another interesting component to hydroponic growing is its appeal to those who seek out organic produce. Because hydroponic systems don’t incorporate soil, produce that comes from hydroponic growing is the cleanest and most nutrient-laden product you can access.

Soil is where sicknesses and bacteria can grow and enter a plant, so by removing the soil, there’s no opportunity for the produce to be “dirtied” or infected. Of course, hydroponic growing must be managed very closely (you control the temperature, mineral level in the water, and so on) but the end product is cleaner and much better than traditional organic growing. And, because the Vegetable Peddler does not process before selling, the chance of bacteria in any of their produce is slim-to-none.

Then came the fun part in our tour: tasting! I tried toscano strap kale, lollo Antonet lettuce, red oak salanova, the aforementioned poc choi, red veined sorrel microgreens, spicy mix microgreens, daikon radish, and more. My one takeaway? I was astonished at how flavorful everything was. The flavors were unbelievable! Diane said that when they take certain crops home for their meals,

they sometimes don’t need salad dressing or additional spices because of how much comes right from their vegetables. The spicy microgreens had me day-dreaming about a fajita salad or a big filet or even just some scrambled eggs – their natural “heat” would add so much to any meal.

Combine that taste with the knowledge that I was eating the freshest and cleanest produce possible, chock full of the most nutrients possible? I am sold.

Toward the end of our tour, we visited the “experimental growing” area. Spencer was working on an entire tomato section (cherry, blush, indigo cherry drops, purple bumblebee), bell peppers (did you know some varieties change from green to red as they mature?), wild blackberries, black raspberries, black gooseberries, zucchini, pickling cucumbers, giant cayenne and Serrano peppers, Fresno red peppers, lemon balm, and more. This was truly a learning area, where Spencer and Elizabeth could see what grows well in this climate, how long certain vegetables take (FYI, the leafy green cycles take around 4-6 weeks, meaning they can turn crops quickly), how much room and light and water certain plants need, and so on. It was exciting to see what could be available to our Estes Park dining community. Can you imagine fresh blackberries in the dead of winter? We’re already excited about lettuce and greens… The possibilities could be endless.

So now, the question is where you can enjoy the “fruits” of this labor! The Veg-

etable Peddler currently supplies produce to Ed’s Cantina, The Rock Inn, Egg & I, and Eagle Rock. They also provided a crop to the Stanley Hotel last week. If you’d like to try the Vegetable Peddler’s produce, be sure to visit these restaurants and ask about their Estes Park local greens – or, ask another restaurant you frequent if they’ll be adding Vegetable Peddler produce soon. As a community that’s engrained in wellness, having nutrient-rich, clean produce with which to fill our bodies is a gift.

Table Setting Inspirations Today At The Estes Park Museum

Within every tableware piece that has been shared or handed down through the family, there is a story. Celebrating those stories, as well the creative ways to display these items—whether vintage or modern—is the inspiration behind a special event happening today at the Estes Park Museum.

The Estes Park Museum Friends & Foundation is hosting Table Settings 101 on Friday, September 2 at 2:00 pm. This special one-hour program, which is free and open to the public, will feature a variety of displays of creative table settings, with ideas on how best to utilize and arrange the tableware that many of us

save for special occasions.

Table Settings 101 is a prelude event to the first-ever Colorado TableSettings competition, scheduled for October 2123 at the YMCA of the Rockies. That weekend, participants will be provided space to arrange their own unique table settings around the theme, “High Country Celebrations—Past and Present.” The public is invited to attend as spectators.

Those planning to participate as table setters are asked to register their entry form by October 1.

This week’s informal Table Settings 101 event at the Museum will offer anyone considering an entry their opportunity to

gain a sense of the style and set-up that might lead to a winning arrangement. Snacks and refreshments will be served, and Museum Friends board members will discuss the specific details of the competition and the registration process. Individuals, families, groups, businesses, and children alike are all invited to consider entering, and the event will feature winning categories for all these levels of entry.

This October’s Creative Colorado Table Settings event is a fundraiser for the Estes Park Museum Friends & Foundation, which provides vital support for the Museum.

Paradise on the River RV & Cabin Rentals received the Estes Park in Bloom steering committee’s “Business Bright Spot” award Aug. 29. The committee presented owners Robin and Diana Eldridge, and Kathy Rogers, who is in charge of the grounds and floral displays, with a traveling sign to be displayed at the property, a window cling and a framed certificate of recognition. The designation of a “Business Bright Spot” signifies a business that places emphasis on beautifully maintained landscapes, floral displays and a tidy store front. Recycling Update By: Judi Smith

The Estes Valley is experiencing some changes to the common place handling of recyclables, both reusable and “trash.”

So this becomes a good time to ask for your help. We are looking for all the ways that people here recycle, so that we can share this information with others. If, when I say “or” you do both, tell us that.

The more the merrier. So, please send me an email and tell me if you recycle and how you recycle. RRRcyc2se@gmail.com For example, for everyday, run of the mill, recycling of “trash.” Do you have easily accessible containers throughout your home? Do you contract for curbside service? Do you take your recyclables to the Estes Park Transfer Station? Or do you prefer to recycle in the valley – and, if so, where?

Do you go to the trouble to keep your

cardboard and glass separate? Do you take your “hard to recycle materials” (such as plastics that are not shaped like jars, bottles, or tubs) down to CHaRM? Do you make regular use of the Planet Partners, and, if so, which ones? This includes all individual locations who accept such items as (but not limited to) plastic bags, old dilapidated blankets, expended CFL light bulbs, shipping supplies, empty printer cartridges, etcetera and so forth.

If there are some that we do not know about – please tell us. But, also tell us whom you use that we have already discovered.

Public Input Requested On Alternatives For Management Of The Crater Trail In RMNP Rocky Mountain National Park (RMNP) is considering options for management of the Crater Trail, which originates near Milner Pass and extends to above tree line east of the Continental Divide. Park staff will be preparing an Environmental Assessment (EA) and invites public input in advance of preparation of the EA. The Crater Trail in its current configuration is resulting in harm to park resources and is not sustainable from a trail construction and maintenance perspective. The public scoping process has begun and comments are invited through October 3, 2016. The EA will analyze a range of alternatives to meet project objectives, evaluate issues and impacts on park resources and values, and identify mitigation measures to lessen the degree or extent of these impacts.

The Crater Trail is a one-mile-long trail on the east side of Specimen Mountain. It differs from other trails in the park in that it is an informal route that was not designed and constructed, but developed over time. As a result, the trail is steep and severely eroded in sections, impacting the alpine tundra and cultural resources. The trail is in designated wilderness and is part of the Specimen Mountain Research Natural Area. The trail is typically closed annually from May to August 15 during the bighorn lambing season. For the past two years, the Crater Trail has been closed yearround pending the outcome of the EA process.

Preliminary options that have been identified for management of the trail and surrounding area include reconstructing the trail within the current alignment, rerouting the trail to a less steep gradient, or permanently closing the trail. Also under consideration is allowing continued use of the current trail and implementing minor improvements within the limits of the existing trail maintenance program (the no action alternative). If the trail or segments of the trail were abandoned due to reroutes or closure, abandoned trail segments would be restored to natural conditions through active replanting or natural revegetation.

The park is hosting a meeting about the

proposed project on Tuesday, September 13, 2016, from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at the Grand Lake Fire Protection District Station located at 201 W. Portal Road in Grand Lake. This will be an opportunity to express ideas, concerns, and recommendations about alternative actions and have questions answered. There will be a short presentation at 6:15 p.m., and park staff will be available to answer questions until 7:30 p.m. The public is invited to visit at any point during the scheduled time to review materials and provide written comments.

Park staff encourage public participation throughout the planning process.

There will be two opportunities to comment formally on the project – one starting now during initial project scoping and again following release of the EA. Comments received during the scoping period will be used to help define the issues and concerns to be addressed in the Environmental Assessment, while also assisting with analyzing the different alternatives.

Comments must be received in writing by close of business on October 3, 2016.

Do you use recyclables to create household solutions? Do you save items like oatmeal boxes or cardboard cores for future unidentified use? If you have an overabundance of something – let us know. We may be able to find a user. If you have a use for something, tell us.

Maybe someone has too much. (I, personally, need six Smead boxes that hold 50 folders when new. Anyone?)

Richard J. Ackerman Jr. To Present Free Poetry Reading At Senior Center

Local resident Richard J. Ackerman Jr. will read poetry from his newly published book, A HundredYear Wind: Reflective Poems, at the Estes Park Senior Center on Tuesday, September 13 at 1:00 p.m.

Ackerman is a retired orthodontist who grew up in the Midwest during WWII

and the Korean Conflict.

He received his dental education at U.M.K.C. and Harvard University School of Dental Medicine. He was a U.S. Air Force dental officer during the Vietnam War and for more than forty years was a dental educator and clinician in Georgia, Missouri, and Kansas. He began his first book, A Hundred-Year Wind: Reflective Poems, three years ago. According to Dr. Ackerman, “These poems about social, spiritual, political, and economic turmoil serve as reminders of the strength of those who came before us and of the resilience in all of us.”

Extra meals will be delivered to Meals on Wheels customers during regular route deliveries on Friday, September 2.

Examples of interest groups are dining groups, wine and cheese gatherings, games like poker and bunco, discussion group and travel club. Newcomers also sponsor several special events throughout the year.

Members are welcome to sign up at this meeting for any activity that interests them.

Newcomers meetings are held the third Thursday of each month, September through May (except December).

Luncheons or dinners provide opportunities to hear from community members and the opportunity to experience different restaurants in the Estes Valley and for the restaurants to showcase their offerings at a reasonable price. The reservation price may vary each month.

The Estes Park Newcomers Club, founded in 1965, is a social, non-profit and non-discriminatory organization. It was founded to help adult residents of the Estes Park area learn about the community while developing new friendships. Scholarship Fund The Allenspark Area Club Pancake Breakfast is a tradition in the Estes Park Area. The club is one of the oldest civic organizations in the area and the pancake breakfast has become an enjoyable and inexpensive outing for the entire family.

The breakfast is all you can eat pancakes, eggs, sausage and beverage and the cost is only $7.00 for Adults and $4.00 for children under 12. All proceeds go to the Area Clubâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s scholarship fund and the scholarships are available to all students that reside in this general area for colleges, universities and trade schools. Students in Estes Park, Allenspark and Lyons have won these scholarships in the past.

The event is open to the public and will be held at the Peaceful Valley Resort, which is located at mile marker 50 on Colorado Highway 72. Look To Your Library: The Teen Zone Is Here And Going Strong!

This summer, the library’s Teen Zone fully embraced Summer Reading with this year’s theme – Get in the Game: Read! Teens of the Estes Valley took the reading challenges to new heights as they ascended high above the library at Open Air Adventure Park’s high ropes course! They explored new genres and then left their books on the shore to strike a pose on a stand-up paddleboard at the Lake Estes Marina. Teens continued with new pursuits with Fly Fishing 101, hosted by Estes Park Mountain Shop. Every participant caught a fish!

Throughout the summer of fun programming and reading, connections and friendships were made. Parents tagged along during the summer teen adventures, which created a wonderful opportunity to share ideas and thoughts on teen services. Feedback received from teens and their parents helped to shape and guide the upcoming offerings at the Teen Zone.

As school starts and summer winds down, don’t expect teens to be standing still. Along with returning to school, they can also return to the Teen Zone for exciting fall and winter programs. New this fall, we will be introducing Club 678, designed specifically for kids in 6th, 7th, and 8th grades. These after-school programs will offer projects, challenges, and learning. Subjects will cover art, engineering, math, science, book clubs, and pay-it-forward projects.

Also this fall, teens and adults have the opportunity to read Duplicity, written by

American Library Association-recommended teen author N.K. Traver. On September 2, there will be a Book Talk and Tech program to share opinions and thoughts on it. A week later, come to the library to meet N.K. Traver when she visits the library on Saturday, September 10. Duplicity is a cyber thriller that has a technology component appealing to both teen and adult readers.

Teens love to express their creativity.

Look to the library and throughout the Estes Valley this fall for teens howling under the full moon each month as we take to the streets for Full Moon Mayhem. September’s event will be a street piano concert in a yet-to-be-divulged location. under the Harvest Moon. Teens can also get creative this fall by participating in the Avant Garbage Fashion show and studio. Working in teams, they will design and create one-of-a-kind fashions using upcycled thrift shop finds. They will also have the opportunity to add some technology to complete their creations.

The library’s Teen Zone is here to create opportunities for teens to share what they think and put their enthusiasm to good use. Youth in Action is a program that will give teens the chance to share fresh perspectives as advisors to nonprofit boards and the opportunity to develop their own philanthropy projects.

The library is excited to offer programs that will inspire your teen to read and engage. It’s a safe space to explore ideas, excite the imagination with creative opportunities, and learn more about themselves, the community, and the world.

Estes Valley Library’s Fall Hours Begin Tuesday, September 6 The Estes Valley Library will be closed all day on Monday, September 5 for the Labor Day Holiday. Beginning Tuesday, September 6, the Library will open at 10:00 a.m. Monday through Saturday.

Friday and Saturday: 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Honoring 100 Years Of The National Park Service-Textile Style Traveling Quilt Exhibit to Visit Rocky Mountain National Park Rocky Mountain National Park will be displaying 13 art quilts, created to celebrate the centennial of the National Park Service, during September, 2016 at the Fall River Visitor Center. The exhibition will open September 6 and the quilts will remain on exhibition through Sunday, September 25. The quilts were created

by Fiber Works, a group of textile artists from the Lincoln-Omaha, Nebraska area.

The artists were inspired by their favorite national park site. The quilts are on a year-long tour of the 13 chosen parks.

From Rocky Mountain the quilts will travel to Shenandoah National Park in Virginia.

“The National Park system is a gift to all Americans. For one hundred years places of historical significance, structures of great merit and many of the natural wonders of our country have been preserved and protected. The National Park system is a symbol of what it means to be an American. We each felt moved by our chosen park or monument to de-

sign a piece of fiber art to represent it.

We hope others will enjoy viewing the pieces we have created from our hearts” stated Cynthia Levis of Fiber Works.

Parks on the tour include, in order of exhibition, Homestead National Monument of America in Nebraska, Joshua Tree National Park in California, Saguaro National Park in Arizona, Hawaii Volcanoes National Park in Hawaii, Statue of Liberty National Monument in New York, Wolf Trap National Park for the Performing Arts in Virginia, Wind Cave National Park in South Dakota, Mount Rushmore National Memorial in South Dakota, Glacier National Park in Montana, Rocky Mountain National Park in Colorado, Shenandoah National Park in Virginia, Everglades National Park in Florida, and Jefferson National Expansion Memorial in Missouri. To The Editor: On August 25 Healing Waters had an Open House to celebrate eight great years and to welcome in a new phase of operation with a new Executive Director. As the new Executive Director I want to thank some very special people that made the evening a great success.

First I want to say thank you to Poppy’s Restaurant. Rob was extremely generous in supplying a delicious spread of food that added to a festive vibe and good eating. Also, a thank you goes out to our great staff Deb Blackman, Carolyn Managler, and Roger Truesdale (also a Board Director). The Board of Directors did an amazing job of supporting and helping with the evening. So, thank you Chris

An Open Thank You To Sunrise Rotary Club Dear Sunrise Rotary members, Thank you for the opportunity to attend the Young RYLA leadership camp. I learned so much about how to be a true leader. The many teamwork activities we did taught me how to work with a team, from blindfolded piers, to building shelters out of newspaper, we worked well together. All of our mindful minutes taught me how to be more mindful. And all of our guest speakers taught me many different lessons, especially Charlene Moser.

This experience has made me more mindful and it has taught me to think about what I'm doing. To take deep breaths when I get too high on my emotional elevator, and to have gratitude towards others. Another thing I have learned to use is my wizard and lizard brain. You want to use your wizard brain to think things through and to be mindful. And you want to use your lizard brain for quick and fast reactions, for example, the fight or flight response.

A guest speaker named Charlene Moser gave us a speech about a friend she once had named Lynda. Lynda was no ordinary high schooler. She had a disease that most kids her age don't have. Her lungs

were failing and her heart had grown too big. She survived two transplants and still was determined to help other people. She would pay for people's food at a fast food restaurant, or leave a heads up penny behind to give others good luck. Lynda was an inspiration.

Thank you Sunrise Rotary for inspiring me to make a difference. I hope to change the world; one small act of kindness can cause a ripple effect. After this experience I have learned that being a true leader doesn't always have to be a huge gesture. Some leadership rolls don't involve being loud, sometimes you just have to observe your surroundings and fix problems quietly.

To end, thank you so much for this experience and a life changing lesson. I have been thinking about how much this experience has changed me and made me a better person. And I have decided to start making a difference in my community. I want to volunteer at the food drive, animal shelter, clean up around town, and more. Thank you Sunrise Rotary, for everything!

More Than $12K In Prizes Awarded To Artists At Plein Air Rockies Event More than 200 people attended the opening of Plein Air Rockies 2016 Saturday to celebrate the culmination of up to two weeks of furious work by artists from all over the country. The day started with the Quick Draw & Auction, held at George Hix Riverside Plaza. At the Quick Draw, artists had 90 minutes to complete a scene located in the immediate vicinity, including fly-fisherman James Finnegan who acted as a model by fishing near the confluence of the Big Thompson and Fall Rivers. Then, the works were auctioned to the public on site. Included auction were wines created specifically for the Plein Air Rockies event by Snowy Peaks Winery over the past four years. Later Saturday evening, an exhibition of up to three of the best pieces from each artist opened and more than $12,000 in cash and prizes were awarded to the competitors.

Plein Air Rockies, sponsored annually by the Cultural Arts Council of Estes Park, asks artists to complete work en plein air - or in the "open air" - in the Northern Rocky Mountains. Anywhere in Rocky Mountain National Park, Estes Park, or 50 miles from the center of Estes Park (in the mountainous regions) was fair game. Some came for a week, others just a few days - but most used the entire two-week period to create beautiful works of art in a variety of media; oil, watercolor, and pastel paintings are showcased in the exhibition.

Sacran also took top honors at the exhibition with his piece, "Morning Magic" which won Best of Show and People's Choice. First place honors went to Hughes for his painting, "Old Pine," which also won Artists' Choice. Lon Brauer of Granite City, IL, created "House on the Rock," which took second place and the Allen Award. Kathleen Hudson of Lexington, KY, won third place with her piece "Bright Morning, Timberline Falls" (sold). Olena Babak of Hartland, ME, won the Charles Partridge Adams award - that piece which best reflects Rocky Mountain National Park with Estes Park artist Larry DeGraff created the miniature, "Enjoying Retirement" (sold) to win first place in that category. Judges were the accomplished artists Lani Vlaanderen of Drake (Quick Draw), Carol Jenkins of Ward, and Dave Santillanes of Fort Collins.
