New trash regulations for residents and businesses within Estes Park town limits go into effect April 1, part of the Wildlife Protection Ordinance adopted in September after a lengthy public process.

Police patrol and Auxiliary officers will actively enforce the ordinance beginning April 1. The ordinance includes specific requirements for refuse located outside an enclosed structure (such as a residential or commercial building, shed or garage). The ordinance defines refuse as any waste that could reasonably attract wildlife including, but not limited to, kitchen organic waste, food, food packaging, toothpaste, deodorant, cosmetics, spices, seasonings, oil and grease. Requirements for refuse containment do not apply to glass, paper, cardboard, metal, plastic, aluminum, textiles, electronics, non-edible yard maintenance waste, construction materials and household items when not commingled with food waste attractants.

COLUMNIST March 11 - That sounds like a rather innocuous date. No battles of Bunker Hill (1775) or Antietam (1862) or bombings of Pearl Harbor (1941), no presidential assassinations, not yet the vernal equinox — good word for a school spelling bee, just another day in the usual 365 day year — though this year we have 366 of them. Just an ordinary day that's with us for 24 hours, and then passes into the past. But has March 11 always been just another day — unless, of course, it's someone's birthday or anniversary? NOPE!!!

If you lived in eastern Sicily, an island off the southern tip of Italy, on this date back in 1669, you'd have something to remember, IF you survived. The volcano Mount Etna erupted, and over fifteen thousand people perished. On the brighter side, in 1702 there appeared the first English language newspaper, the Daily Courant. And thinking of the English, just six years later on this date Queen Anne vetoed a military bill relating to a Scottish militia. That was the LAST time a British monarch ever vetoed parliamentary legislation.

Coming closer to home, on this date in 1779 the U.S. army corps of engineers was established. Come to think of it, looking at its history, the corps had to be established more than once. (But that's not the subject of this column!) Ten years later Benjamin Banneker and Pierre Charles L'Enfant began the layout of what would become Washington, D.C. And still staying in the eighteenth century, in 1791 in Philadelphia Samuel Mulliken received the very first U.S. patent.

On this date in 1823 the first normal school in the United States opened its doors. "Normal" schools would be established for ONE specific purpose — to prepare teachers. The very first was Concord Academy, located in Concord, Vermont.

Looking abroad, and moving up a few years, in Venice, Italy, Giuseppe Verdi's opera Rigoletto had its first performance in 1851. On the same date fifteen years later his opera Don Carlos had its premier in Paris.

March 11 was a very prominent date in the 1860s. In Montgomery, Alabama in '61 the states of the Confederacy produced their first constitution. Lacking success on the battlefield President Abraham Lincoln in 1862, replaced General George McClellan with Henry Halleck. At the same time southern general Stonewall Jackson withdrew his Army of the Potomac from Winchester, Virginia. Across the Atlantic in Great Britain in 1864 the Great Sheffield Flood killed over 250 people in what is referred to as the largest man-made disaster in British history. In Nebraska history, if we can advance a couple of decades, on this date there was the great blizzard of 1885.

Still March 11: In 1901 baseball immortal John McGraw signed a Cherokee Indian Tokohoma to a contract. To this day some sports historians contend that Tokohoma was really black, and thus the first of his race to get a baseball contract. Turning to a different sport we find in professional hockey the beginnings of the Stanley Cup playoffs.

Naturally they started in Canada. In '04 and '05 the Ottawa Silver won what we now recognize as the Stanley Cup. In 1912 on this date the playing time in a hockey game was changed from two halves to three twenty minute periods. Still that today!

On this date in 1917 took place the first National Hockey League championship game. It was won by Toronto 7-3 over Montreal. At the same time the British were taking over Baghdad by driving out the Turks.

And on this date in the following year Moscow became the capital of revolutionary Russia. As for the USA, in 1927 occurred the first recorded commercial car hold up. The place -Pittsburgh.

On this date in 1930 William H. Taft, who had been President and also Chief Justice of the Supreme Court was buried in Arlington Cemetery. By way of contrast, five years later Hermann Goering created the German Air Force Luftwaffe. And further contrast? In 1941 Bronko Nagurski, by defeating Ray Steele, became world wrestling champ! On the same date President Franklin Roosevelt signed the Lend Lease Bill providing funds to Great Britain then at war with Nazi Germany. In 1942 General MacArthur left Corregidor (Bataan) for Australia. Three years later - same date - one thousand Allied planes dropped 4,662 tons of bombs on Essen, Germany.

More on this date! In 1953 Frances Adams became the first woman doctor commissioned in the U.S. army. On the same day a U.S. B-17 war plane accidentally dropped a nuclear bomb from 15,000 feet onto Mars Bluff, South Carolina. The bomb made a crater 75 feet across. Fortunately a safety catch kept the bomb from detonating.

Strictly for contrast: 1954 - the U.S. Army charged Senator Joseph McCarthy with undue pressure tactics; 1955-American League baseball players were required to wear batting helmets; 1958 - Charles Van Doren finally lost on the TV game show "21"; 1974 Mount Etna in Sicily had another monstrous eruption; 1985 -the British pound note ceased to be legal tender, becoming instead just a one pound note. And ending the century, 1997 Beatle Paul McCartney was knighted Sir Paul by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. So much for March eleven ... up to this century!

Town To Pursue Grant To Fund Free Shuttle Service Year-Round Community survey underway through April 3 The Town of Estes Park and its Shuttle Committee are preparing a shuttle service grant application to submit to the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT). CDOT will allocate Federal Transportation Administration (FTA) funds to rural communities for expenses related to offering community transit services throughout the year. The Town currently offers free shuttle service from June through October, and the grant would allow the Town to operate on a limited basis throughout the year.

To assist with compiling the grant application, the Town requests community members complete a brief survey by April 3 at www.estes.org/transitproposal. A printed version of the survey is available at the Estes Park Visitor Center, 500 Big Thompson Ave. The survey will help identify the parameters of the proposed service including days and hours of service, desired destinations, and other pertinent information.

At a recent Town Board study session, Town staff and the Shuttle Committee recommended the expansion of the Town’s free shuttle service to include year-round service on fixed routes with ADA accessibility in the Estes Valley. It was proposed that service could cover an additional 40 weeks of the year.

Staff ’s initial draft proposal is also available at www.estes.org/transitproposal. To pursue this option, the Town will apply for the FTA grant and others that become available.

Grant funding could reimburse the Town approximately 50 to 80 percent of expenses. Typically operational costs may be grant-funded at 50 percent, to include items such as printing, contracted services, signage, administrative personnel and preventative fleet maintenance.

Grants may also fund capital costs at 80 percent, including vehicle purchases and bus shelters.

The Shuttle Committee, comprised of Town of Estes Park employees, citizens, and local business representatives, reviews all Town shuttle activities and plans. The Town’s shuttle

program was initiated after the Town commissioned a comprehensive parking study in 2005, which recommended a shuttle system to assist with consistently high seasonal traffic and limited land mass for expanding parking areas. Twelve-weeks of daily service is scheduled for June 25 through September 11 of 2016. The Elkhorn Express free trolley continues to serve special events in the spring and fall of 2016. LETTER TO THE EDITOR

Thank You To All Who Helped At Structure Fire To The Editor: Early last Friday morning the Fire District’s firefighters were called to a fully involved multi-family structure fire. While enroute, we were told by the police officers on scene that there were two adults and two children unaccounted for. When I arrived on scene, approximately 75% of the front side of the building was fully involved in fire. I was then notified by the Estes Park Police officers who were on scene that all of the occupants had been evacuated and accounted for and all were uninjured and safe. The quick actions taken by the first arriving police officers in evacuating the residents certainly contributed to everyone getting out safely. This was a challenging fire for all involved, not the least of whom are the residents

who lost their homes, possessions and vehicles.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who provided assistance.

First of all, many thanks to the police officers, dispatchers, volunteer firefighters, Fire District staff, and the medical center’s ambulance crew who provided the first response to this incident. I would also like to thank the Estes Park Light and Power and Water DeEPNEWS partment employees who provided support to our operation. Fires of this size require assistance from other agencies to safely and effectively fight the fire. We would not have been able to control this fire without the help from our neighboring agencies including the Glen Haven

Area Volunteer Fire Department, Allenspark Fire Protection District, Pinewood Springs Fire Protection District, Big Thompson Canyon Volunteer Fire Department, and the Loveland Fire and Rescue Authority. I would also like to send our gratitude to the Poudre Fire Authority and the ATF for sending fire investigators to assist us in the fire investigation.

There are always others who provide support and assistance who are not on the front lines, but whose support is greatly appreciated. These include McDonalds, Kind Coffee, Starbucks, Safeway, and Mr. Steve Thoms. Thank you all for your help and support during this tragic event.

The charge(s) are merely an accusation and the defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.

On March 5 at 10:22 p.m. police stopped the driver of a vehicle in the 2000 block of Big Thompson Ave. for speeding. Upon further investigation, the 37 year old female driver from Warshaw, MO was found to be driving under the influence of alcohol with a BrAC of .148. The driver was charged with DUI, DUI per se and speeding and later released to a responsible person.

How Can I Help The Families Who Lost Their Homes In Last Week’s Fire?

About 4:30 a.m. Friday morning, March 4, a fire destroyed an apartment complex on Chapin Lane in Estes Park.

Thanks to the generosity of many caring people in the Estes Valley community, along with the hard work of Crossroads Ministry Case Manager Eva Bañuelos, all four families displaced by the fire were successfully relocated Monday afternoon to interim housing through the end of April.

Immediate needs – clothing, personal toiletry items, and transportation, have been taken care of for the time being. Until the families find permanent housing after their leases expire at the end of April, it is not possible to determine what their needs for furniture and other household items will be. Crossroads Ministry will accept whatever in-kind donations we are able to manage before that time; however, the best way to help at this time is through cash donations, so that all the needs that arise in the next few weeks can be met as effectively and efficiently as possible.

Accordingly, Crossroads Ministry is administering a fund to continue meeting

the needs of these 20 persons in the weeks ahead. Please designate gifts for “Chapin Lane Fire.”

Kudos to the Estes Park Extension of the Salvation Army for being first responders in this time of crisis for our neighbors, and for arranging lodging through the weekend at the Rodeway Inn. By midmorning on Friday, Crossroads Ministry moved forward with case management responsibilities and led the effort to secure longer-term transitional lodging and other essential needs.

Special thanks to Erica with Estes Valley Crisis Advocates (formerly Estes Valley Victim Advocates) for helping to secure clothing Friday morning, to the Community Thrift Store for donating additional items, and to the American Red Cross for providing additional early assistance. The Quota Club, and many other neighborhood organizations and caring persons, have stepped up and provided help or indicated that they stand ready to offer additional assistance as needed.

1. What makes Estes Park the best mountain town vacation destination?

I was immediately drawn to Estes Park because of the combination of glorious scenery, proximity to Rocky Mountain National Park, incredible wildlife and outstandingly clean en-

vironment. Since coming here, I add to the attraction of Estes Park the amazingly friendly people, the services provided to the residents and the ease of access to and from the airport, Denver attractions, and the rest of Northern Colorado.

2. What do you envision for the longterm future of Estes Park?

I see Estes Park as a year-round destination/escape for the dramatically increased population of the Front Range.

With the advent of accessible, dependable broadband internet service, I see many more young, geographically independent businesses choosing to relocate their presence to a safe, clean, picturesque base of operations. Wellness activities and wellness oriented businesses will thrive.

3. What unique abilities and/or skills will you bring to the Town Board?

I have significant experience in both the

area non-profit arena and in 8 years of service as a Town Trustee and 2 years on the EPMC Board. I fully understand the function and operations of the Town government.

4. When there is a great divide of opinion on an issue, how would you bring both sides together?

I have experience as a trained facilitator.

I have said that my style of management is cooperative collaboration, bringing in all sides before a solution is found, eliminating, to the extent possible, the “us vs. them” that we see on contentious issues.

It is not always possible to totally get agreement, but your chances are greater when all sides work towards a solution rather than having a solution forced upon them.

5. What economic concerns should we focus on immediately?

We continue to see a significant turnover in businesses every year. While some of this is natural, some could be reduced by educating business owners both before

they purchase a store, and aer when they are trying to find a way to succeed. I believe that the Town, the Partners for Commerce, and the EDC all have roles to play in keeping more of our businesses sound and successful.

6. How can living in Estes Park be more desirable and affordable for young families?

“Increased access to affordable housing” is the top three answers to this. rough partnerships with employers, the county, the housing authority, builders and others, we simply MUST find a way to increase affordable housing availability. Additionally, the increased access to winter recreational opportunities is mandatory for our families with children. When the new Recreation Center comes online in late 2017, there will be a significantly better availability of year-round activities.

Healthy debate on all the issues that we face is an important and necessary part of the democratic process. Our goal should be a result that demonstrates balance. e Town Board needs to listen intently and consider all sides before making up their collective mind. As elected officials, we need to remember that we occupy our seats on the board to represent the people that elected us.

5. What economic concerns should we

focus on immediately? e Town of Estes Park can start by getting its own financial house in order. We need to balance the 2016 General Fund Budget and return the General Fund Reserves to a safer and more secure level. e next issue that needs to be addressed is the Town’s deferred maintenance of utilities, streets, buildings, storm-water drainage and sidewalks.

6. How can living in Estes Park be more desirable and affordable for young families?

1. What makes Estes Park the best mountain town vacation destination? e answer to this question is obviously subjective, but for me it is the natural beauty and the people. However, we cannot rest on this alone.

We must develop new products along with rejuvenate what we offer now so we can continue to attract people to our mountain village, whether as a guest or as a permanent resident.

2. What do you envision for the longterm future of Estes Park?

My vision for Estes Park’s future long term is a place where all that work here can live here, all that reside here can feel at piece here, and all that visit here come back. is vision sounds wonderful, how we achieve this is going to take difficult conversations, complex strategies, and compromise across the board.

3. What unique abilities and/or skills will you bring to the Town Board?

What I believe are the skills I can bring to the Town Board, as a Trustee is tenacity, pluralism, critical thinking, and knowledge.

Tenacity allows me to continue to pursue an idea or a solution to a problem when there may be resistance along the way. Pluralism allows me to except others opinions and ideas in order to find the best solution. Critical thinking allows me to think outside the box and get creative when searching for solutions.

Knowledge, which I gained through my attendance and participation at a variety of community meeting over a decade al-

What I prefer to do when there are diverse opinions on an issue is look for any common ground as small or as simple as it may be. If you can start any discussion on what you agree on, in my experience you find that you agree on more then you disagree on. I will continue to engage my fellow citizens, I will use the skills I have listed in question three, and I will follow an ethical transparent processes along the way.

5. What economic concerns should we focus on immediately? e economic concerns that I believe the Town Board should focus on as well as other organizations and the community at large are attainable housing, a sustain-

able economy, and flood plain mitigation in our downtown corridor. If we cannot house our workforce we cannot have a vibrant community or a vibrant economy. If we do not find balance in our seasonal visitation we will continue to stress or natural surroundings along with our infrastructure to a point where guest will not want to return and we will not want to reside here.

6. How can living in Estes Park be more desirable and affordable for young families?

In order to make Estes Park a more desirable and affordable place for young families to live we must look to the expansion of our economy and to our codes. Expanding our economy to more year round than seasonal will allow employers to retain more full time people and pay better wages.

Taking a hard look at our codes where they apply to density, height and type of units are important steps in making Estes Park a place for all to live and play.

Compromise is the only solution to opinions that differ greatly. In order to achieve compromise, I would seek areas of common ground. Once that is established, then discussion can take place to give and take on the controversial details of the issue. is sounds easier than it is, but levelheaded folks will prevail.

5. What economic concerns should we focus on immediately?

Four years ago I ran on economic development issues. Since then I helped create the Estes Park Economic Development Corporation. ey have successful brought to light the economic concerns we face and have had for many years. In my opinion, we need to continue to increase our economy to yearround with work force housing being a close second. If we don’t have yearround employment for people they can’t afford to live here.

6. How can living in Estes Park be more desirable and affordable for young families?

We need to incentivize developers to build more affordable housing that is within the 30% of the household’s gross income. e approval of the Estes Valley Community Center will be an attraction for families and assist in some limited child care. We must continually support and strive to maintain the quality of our schools. A year-round economy will provide the jobs for families to be able to live here.

1. What makes Estes Park the best mountain town vacation destination?

I think John Muir said it best, "ousands of tired, nerve-shaken, overcivilized people are beginning to find out that going to the mountains is going home; that wilderness is a necessity; and that mountain parks and reservations are… fountains of life."

Our visitors hear the call of the wild and Estes Park is more than willing to accommodate. First time visitors may come for the National Park but they oen return for the Town.

2. What do you envision for the long-term future of Estes Park?

Depending on our ability to provide affordable workforce housing options I see two very realistic outcomes. Either we come up with affordable options for workers to allow families, our school system, and our community to thrive or housing prices continue to grow at unattainable rates further widening the gap between property values and what our industries are capable of providing their employees. If the latter happens, only the independently wealthy will be able to live in Estes Park and our community will greatly suffer.

3. What unique abilities and/or skills will you bring to the Town Board?

I'm very good at looking at objective information from both sides of an argument to make decisions that are in the best interest of the community. I have the ability to remove personal bias and am willing to vote for the overall good of the community, even when it can negatively impact myself.

4. When there is a great divide of opinion on an issue, how would you bring both sides together?

Communication is key to finding a compromise when one is available.

Being able to decipher objective concerns from subjective complaints is important when attempting to mediate

arguments and make decisions in the best interest of the community.

5. What economic concerns should we focus on immediately?

Estes Park is currently in a “housing whirlpool” that continues to force families to leave. Property values continue to go up, but our industries unfortunately aren’t able to provide the income needed to meet rising mortgage payments or rental fees. If workforce housing isn’t offered, families will continue to be forced to leave, our school enrollment will continue to decrease, and our school system will significantly downsize or potentially close. Prospective families won’t see a reason to move to Estes Park if the Town has a failing school system and housing is beyond their reach. Likewise, retirees will also not be as inclined to move to the Estes area if the services rise and fall with the seasonal tourist industry. Residents may not notice now but they will when there’s no one to check them out at the grocery store (already a problem), when first responders are late to a 911 call (several police officers live in the Front Range), or when their favorite restaurant can’t open its doors be-

Rental fees from future residents will eventually offset initial building costs and provide the Town with additional revenue streams, which could decrease the tax burden on the residents.

Rocky Mountain National Park is the single biggest reason that our town is a premier vacation destination. We have businesses in town that provide the services that those folks get to enjoy while visiting our biggest resource RMNP. Unlike many destinations, the residents of this town are very patient and welcoming to these visitors. Between the park, great merchants and friendly smiles this is the best mountain vacation you can hope to get.

2. What do you envision for the longterm future of Estes Park?

I envision an Estes Park that is in-

vested in quality of life. e smiling faces that provide our services, teach our youth and work for our town government are also our neighbors and can afford to live here. I see a Town Government not telling people to seek our leaders to get their input but elected officials that seek out the will of the people. Long term, Estes Park should be the best mountain town at providing services to our visitors that are here to visit Rocky Mountain National Park, while it provides some balance in protecting the quality of life for those of us that live here.

3. What unique abilities and/or skills will you bring to the Town Board?

I have spent the majority of my life here, and I know where we have been and it will make it much clearer where we are going. I didn't move here to retire, I live here to thrive. e biggest thing I can bring to this Town Board is character, as a life time Eagle Scout I live by the code of "doing my Duty to God and my Country."

I bring the ability to "take back" our Town decision making process to the people. As president of the local school board, I understand the issues of budget, and I understand what government can and can't do, also what it should and shouldn't do.

When there is a great divide of opinion on an issue, how would you bring both sides together? e greater the divide, usually the bigger the impact on lives. e loop is a great example of a divide, I would insist that issues like this be taken to the voters so that we are doing what the people want done, not what government feels is "best for us." I am personally against the loop, but I have spent my life helping Estes be the kind of place where visitors and residents can experience the same thrill I get living here, and it breaks my heart to see the town in protest over the loop. e eminent domain process from our government alone makes me question why we wouldn't take a vote and let the people decide.

5. What economic concerns should we focus on immediately?

We no longer have a work force housing problem, we have a crisis. e concern isn't affordable housing, it isn't low income housing we need work force housing. I have been here for 3 floods and it just doesn't make good sense to have our first responders, our medical staff, our teachers, and our service providers not be part of our community by living here.

We have to start asking, about every decision: how does this effect work force housing? We have to approach this with

great care and balance to protect quality of life but in the long run there is no way we can sustain the great quality of life we enjoy without addressing this problem. I also want to live in a community where my services are provided by my neighbors not someone that drives up from the valley and doesn't share the same value I put on living in Estes Park.

6. How can living in Estes Park be more desirable and affordable for young families?

Young families need a place they can afford to live. We have taken great strides in this community to provide a school system that is desirable for young families, despite the fact that few teachers are able to afford to live here. e business community is generating jobs, even though their middle managers are stuck sleeping on couches or driving up every day, and our lo non-profits are some of the strongest in any community: despite the fact their long term goals of serving people are challenged by changing faces every year. We have everything a young family wants, a great school, with committed educators, a town full of helpful community oriented citizens, a recreation center going in, and a giant playground called Rocky Mountain National Park, now we just have to find a way let them live here.

I am a firm believer in asking lots of questions, talking through issues, and making reasonable choices aer gathering all the information. Aer years of studying communication and philosophy, as well as years and years of customer service in Estes and other places, I excel in conflict management and diplomacy. Although you can’t make everyone happy all of the time, it is possible for all people to at least feel respected and heard by giving them time, the benefit of the doubt in their arguments, and the opportunity to fully express their ideas and convictions.

5. What economic concerns should we focus on immediately?

I love the work that has been done in recent years to give Estes a more year-

round economy. I think that continued, responsible growth is important and can be done in ways that are respectful of wildlife and outdoor spaces.

I think there are a number of hotels and buildings that are bordering between rusting and run-down, and I would like to see owners given opportunities to make necessary changes, especially in view of how the flood plain changes. It’s also crucial for the economy for us to get more young families back up here to strengthen the economy.

6. How can living in Estes Park be more desirable and affordable for young families?

I have to admit that as a teenager growing up here in the mid-90s, I didn’t appreciate living here at all. I thought it was so “boring” (Sigh. Are teenagers happy anywhere?). I couldn’t wait to get out of this valley. Aer spending a decade living in Fort Collins, Denver, Vail, however, I realized what I had lost by leaving Estes. I am very fortunate that I was able to come home again. And I know many of my former classmates who wish they were able to come back, but the housing and job situations don’t allow for it.

Stability in a year-round economy with great job opportunities and affordable housing will go a long way to bring back some of our missing young families.

ESTES PARK NEWS

Lately, several people have heard me describe my outlook and lifestyle as those of a “quintessential millennial.” I’ve said it in an almost self-deprecating manner – that my recent restructure of priorities probably seems childlike and from a fantasyland – but in fact, I’m proud of this new attitude I’ve adopted.

When I was growing up, I spent a lot of time thinking about school and work and my future career, dreaming about a life in the “business world,” climbing the corporate ladder and achieving what I then perceived to be boatloads of success. I wanted a high-powered, fastpaced position with a large company.

Even though my career path shifted a bit when I moved to Estes Park, I have consistently been committed to my work, making it the priority of my time and energy. The thought of achieving big milestones in a career has always been exciting to me.

Recently my focus has shifted away from that all-there-is-is-work mentality, and toward a more philosophical, whatis-life-really-about frame of mind. You can see the evidence of that shift in this column: I’ve been writing a lot about the choices and sacrifices we have all made to live in Estes Park. Each week I’ve found myself questioning over and over again why I go to such lengths to be here if I didn’t set myself up to actually enjoy everything about it. Why would I want

to work all of the time and not be able to do the things that make me the happiest, the things that are the very reasons why I live here?

Isn’t the point to get out and enjoy our beautiful surroundings? To truly live in the purest sense of the word? Yes, work is a necessity and I am lucky enough to really enjoy the work that I do, but perhaps a reality check was in order for me.

When it is my time to go, will I be taking my work (and the resulting accomplishments, financial and otherwise) with me? Of course, the answer is no.

When I work on branding projects, I always talk about how the most important goal is to create experiences. People are not interested in the business of transactions – we want experiences. We want to feel like we’re uniquely part of something, like we’re involved and engaged. Like we’re living! So when the opportunity presented itself to take a trip to New Zealand in April, I drank a beer, closed my eyes, and clicked ‘Purchase Tickets.’ I’m ready to focus on experiences, on enjoyment, on adventures, on life.

COLUMNIST Sunday nights won’t be the same now that my second family won’t be dropping by. For the past six years they’ve taken time after dinner to bring me up to date on what’s happening in their lives, always ending the visit with several of their stories unfinished so we’d have guaranteed drama next week. I’m really going to miss them.

When I first learned of this family but before I met them, I thought they were from Downtown. When others talked about them (oh, the dresses! The hats! The table settings and teas and that dumpy little shack they lived in!) I thought my friends were mistaken when they spoke of Downton. I quickly discovered it was I who was wrong. I had a lot to learn.

Much history was covered in the six years of Sunday nights I spent with the Crawley family from Grantham. I learned about aristocracy, heirs, heiresses and presumptive heirs. I discovered what a dowager is (a widow with a title or property derived from her late husband.

Dowager Violet Crawley was a woman who could sling an insult with more grace than she offered a compliment), and I learned what a marquess is (a British nobleman ranking above an earl and below a duke. Edith’s husband Bertie was a marquess). I observed the details of wardrobes and hairstyles through several bygone eras, sported by those who spared no expense. I gained knowledge of military officers, battles, and diseases, and witnessed crime, murder, love, death, heartache and redemption.

I can’t say I liked everyone at Downton Abbey—not even all of the main characters.

Although the last episode wrapped up with “…and they all lived happily ever after,” I wasn’t completely satisfied.

• I wanted to see the blackmailing, busybody Denker, the Dowager Countess’s lady maid, get her just due. With Lady Violet as sharp as Daisy’s kitchen knife, it was uncharacteristic of her to allow Denker to get away with any shenanigans. The Dowager should have sacked Denker like the rotten potatoes she was.

• Thomas Barrow was despicable through most of the series. He was an evil conniver who lied, stole and accused Bates of being the thief, pretended to be a war hero, schemed to make his coworkers look bad, manipulated others, tattled, backstabbed—and to top it off, he smoked like a chimney. Yet in the end he became soft-hearted and was welcomed back into the Crawley fold to become the head butler, even after bloodying up a bathroom via an attempt at suicide. A week later you wouldn’t have known anything drastic had happened. I didn’t like being manipulated by the

scriptwriter (Julian Fellowes) to like or dislike Thomas at his whim. Barrow deserved to be the only one who didn’t end up with someone to love at the end of the series.

• Spiteful Lady Mary showed a hint of newly kindled kindness in the end, but she was so cold and downright mean to her sister Edith throughout, it seemed a bit unlikely that she would turn over a new leaf in the last ten minutes of a six-year run. Edith deserved the happiness she finally achieved, but it shouldn’t have been due to Mary’s meddling.

• How was it that Carson felt nothing but fatherly adoration for the malevolent Mary?

• Tim Drewe and his wife kindly took in Edith’s illegitimate daughter, Marigold, and cared for her while Edith pretended not to be her mother. Understandably, Mrs. Drewe became fond of the little girl. When Edith decided she couldn’t bear to be apart from her daughter, Marigold was moved to the big house as a “ward.” Poor Mrs. Drewe was devastated, and at one point, secretly took the child home from a fair to hold her in her lap and rock her once again. Edith felt threatened by the affections of Mrs. Drewe toward her daughter, so the Drewes were kicked off the tenant farm. It was an unfortunate situation for all involved. The Drewes were helping Edith keep her illegitimate child a secret and were rearing her in a loving home, only to be booted out by a jealous Edith. I didn’t like the way this storyline was resolved.

• Did anyone else struggle with trust issues with Mr. Bates? I wanted to like the guy because I loved sweet Anna, his precious wife, but I never quite got beyond the shroud of mystery surrounding his past. Bates just carried too many secrets for me to trust him.

• I liked Tom Branson a lot—and Sybil too.

But it was not believable that Sybil would marry the family chauffeur. It is even less likely that after Sybil died, the family would eventually have Tom run the estate alongside Lady Mary. From what little I know, it just didn’t work like that with lords and ladies and their servants.

There were many doors left open a crack at Downton Abbey, thank goodness—babies to be born, romances to blossom, car factories to be built, children to grow up. It won’t be long before we’ll have the movie to look forward to.

Meantime, what are we to do with our empty Sunday nights, without the Crawley coming to call?

Uncle John's Random Musings from the Campaign Trail We've got to find a way to unobtrusively harness the wasted energy of gale force winds blowing through town every winter - Can anyone say “pinwheel farms”?

The assured unbiased nature of various media outlets' endorsements would be more believable if everybody didn't already know their picks months in advance.

My first day in power, I would find some way to stop that weird space music that cycles endlessly on local TV channel 12. I swear that devil noise sends birds into windows.

The fuzzy “hopes and dreams” questions posed at various forums serve more as litmus tests for candidates' imaginations and extemporaneous speaking skills, rather than as gauges of what they can actually deliver.

Are they all that useful?

Fair enough, but why do folks feel compelled to give bland answers to uninspired questions? Case in point: If you were elected, John, how would you restore the town's general fund to health? Answer: By not accepting a salary. Boom. Just saved everyone $20,000 right there.

When I started this campaign three long weeks ago, people said a “let the public speak” write-in campaign didn't stand a chance. So why at last check were there already 200 names on the voter wall, pledging support? The other candidates will make great trustees, sure, but if you want a say on the Loop and a hard worker besides, currently I don't see much other choice.

Stop by campaign headquarters at 840 Moraine anytime and share your thoughts. I'm quite aware I'm all ears.

Hunter Education Class

An internet based Hunter Education Class will be taught by Rick Spowart, Colorado Parks & Wildlife District Wildlife Manager of Estes Park at on March 19th & 20th. In class, students will cover the material needed to pass the class from one of three internet courses which cost $13 to $25 followed by at least four hours classroom work, a final test, and shooting. The classroom work will be held at the Dannels Fire Station training room at 901 N. St. Vrain Ave. on March 19th starting at 9 a.m. The final test and shooting will be on the 20th at the Fire Station and Estes Park Gun Club indoor range. There will be a nominal fee to use the range.

Estes Park is a Statutory Rule town. Is this best for us? Come to learn more at this monthly League program on Wednesday, March 16, at 10:00 a.m. in the Hondius Room at the Estes Valley Library. The speaker will be Rachel Allen, Staff Attorney of the Colorado Municipal League. She will present an overview of Home Rule, including general arguments both for and against it.

Currently, there are 100 home rule cities or towns in Colorado out of 127 municipalities. We are offering this presentation as a follow-up to the 2015 LWV-EP study on Voting Rights within the Estes Valley.

The Colorado Municipal League is a nonprofit, nonpartisan organization that has served Colorado's cities and towns since 1921.

The meeting will start promptly at 10:00 a.m. this month. As always, members of the League and the general public, including men, are welcome at League meetings. Refreshments will be served.

Patrick Martchink Running For Town Trustee Why am I doing this?

Many have asked me why I’m running for town board trustee, and I’ve struggled to come up with one specific answer. Initially, I’d say very frankly that the current Board doesn’t accurately represent the total populous of the Town.

There are working families here, and as a working husband and father, I believe I will be able to bring a new perspective to the Board and offer a voice for families throughout the Estes Valley. As I thought about it more, I noticed that so few are willing to set aside personal bias and accept what is right for the future of the community simply because it is not in their personal best interest.

I believe it is vital for any potential trustee or mayoral candidate to be capable of removing their personal interests to make the very difficult decisions needed to promote a healthy future for the Town. Not being willing to listen to objective arguments from both applicants and their oppositions does no one good, and I believe doing so is a disservice to everyone affected in the Estes Valley. First and foremost, trustees need to vote for what is in the best interest of

Estes Park, not for what is in the best interests of a particular neighborhood, a specific business, or themselves. The future decisions the Board will make won’t be easy, but I feel up to the task so that my family has a town it can continue to be proud of.

Lastly, and possibly most importantly, even if I’m not elected, I hope to inspire other young adults to make the sacrifice and get involved in local government. As more and more families are forced to leave, the time is now to take it upon ourselves to ensure Estes Park continues to thrive for many generations to come.

Help Shape The Future Of Downtown Estes Park Town seeks input at downtown coffee talks and online survey What is your vision for Downtown in 2025? The Town of Estes Park invites all business owners, property owners and residents to join a conversation about the future vision of Downtown Estes Park.

Over the next ten months business owners, property owners and residents will examine key issues in the downtown area such as economic competitiveness, flood mitigation and stormwater management, environmental resiliency, commercial mix, housing options, redevelopment and building height, transit and shuttles, congestion, parking, pedestrian and bicycle connections, public amenities, infrastructure needs and zoning regulations. The Downtown Plan will address these and many other issues by forming a comprehensive vision for the commercial core of Estes Park, developed by the community as a whole, for downtown development over the next ten years.

Town staff and representatives from consulting firm Logan Simpson are hosting downtown coffee talks where com-

munity members may stop by for a hot, locally-made beverage and discuss their visions for downtown. To celebrate the National Park Service Centennial, Rocky Mountain National Park will be offering a series of truly unique Saturday evening programs held at 7 p.m. at the Beaver Meadows Visitor Center.

On Saturday, March 12, the ranger-led program will focus on how science informs park management at Rocky Mountain National Park. A short presentation will be followed by the opportunity for participants to share their own views and take part in a facilitated discussion aimed to explore and share thoughts on the role of science in our national parks. Town of Estes Park Old Ranger Road Designated As Snow Route; Vehicles Must Be Moved For Plows The Town of Estes Park will designate Old Ranger Road as a snow route beginning Monday, March 14. The Public Works Department will install snow route signs, at which time on-street parking will be prohibited during snowstorms when plows must remove snow. Vehicles parked on narrow residential streets like Old Ranger Road create obstacles for plows and may prevent emergency vehicles from reaching residents during a crisis. When plows begin clearing snow, vehicles parked along designated snow routes may be towed at the owner’s expense. Other posted snow routes include Aspen Avenue, Birch Avenue, Columbine Avenue, Driftwood Avenue, Elm Avenue, Fir Avenue and Crabapple Lane.

Residents and business owners have additional responsibilities during snowy and icy conditions: • Pows must push snow to the roadway edge which may cause a ridge of snow to be deposited at private driveways or on sidewalks. The Town understands this can be frustrating, and appreciates customers’ patience. The Town’s snow removal team cannot remain productive when stopping to clear

EP Central Helps Crossroads With Housing For Fire Victims Within moments of hearing about the apartment fire on Friday, March 4 in Estes Park, on social media outlets, Judy Domina, a homeowner who has several homes listed with Estes Park Central Vacation Rentals was contacting the company’s main office to ask how she could help. Judy, along with other homeowners, and Rainer Schelp, President of Estes Park Central, were on the phone with Crossroads Ministry of Estes Park assessing what the families would need in the way of housing.

The Salvation Army put the families in hotels over the weekend while Estes Park Central personnel readied homes for the families to move into on Monday, March 7.

Judy and two other owners, whose properties are managed by Estes Park Central, offered four houses to the four families in need. These homeowners took their homes off the vacation market and made them available for the families until they find more appropriate housing in Estes Park.

On Monday, March 7, Eva Bañuelos, Case Manager for Crossroads and Melissa Addison, Reservationist for Estes Park Central, took each family to their new home.

“It was quite an emotional experience for me,” said Melissa, “not only seeing the families look of relief on having a home to live in but to see members of the community, Crossroads and Estes Park Central all come together to make it happen.”

• Property owners are responsible for clearing sidewalks in front of their homes and businesses by noon on snowy days. By law, snow removed from any sidewalk or driveway may not be deposited into the roadway. Doing so can create dangerous conditions for drivers and negates the clearing work done by our plow drivers.

• Keep in mind that snowplows are less maneuverable than other vehicles, and visibility is often limited for the plow driver. Motorists are reminded to be alert and give the plows plenty of room to maneuver and safely apply the salt/sand to our streets.

• Drive safely and use vehicle headlights during winter weather conditions.

Parkinson’s Support Group Meeting

The next meeting of the Parkinson’s Disease Support Group will be held Tuesday, March 15. (Monthly meetings are always held on the third Tuesday of the month).

Guest speaker for the meeting will be Dr. Christian Hageseth and his program will be, “Can we consciously use our mind to change our bodies?”

Dr. Christian Hageseth is a retired psychiatrist and has had Parkinson’s Disease for five years. What makes him unusual is that he still does not take any medication to treat his PD. He has relied on vigorous physical exercise (meaning you work out to the point of sweating). He practices yoga and Pilates, power walks regularly, and does strength training at a health club.

But looking back to the first days of his illness, he consciously developed a mindset that refused to see him as a victim or locking in some sort of mortal combat with an enemy that always wins. Lately he has focused more on what his mind is capable of doing to modify his PD.

Thirty-five years ago he took training that involved using visualization in an effort to treat or control cancer. He found that after the initial hype was gone, visualization did not make any measureable difference. Lately he has devoted himself to a rigorous of mindfulness meditation.

This has caused him to re-visit the subject of how to use the mind to influence that body and possibly alter the course of illness.

His presentation will include many anecdotes for his thirty-five years as a practicing physician as well as stories from his own life. He will also share information on how participants may undertake their own mindfulness meditation.

The meeting time is from 2-3:30 p.m. in the George Hix Room at the entrance of the US Bank Building.

All affected by this progressive neurological disease and their family/friends are welcome to attend to bring their own experiences, strength and hope and come together for the good of the group.

EPMC Program: Wellness Initiatives Mark Gregson, Frank Dumont, and Wayne Park to present free program The Town of Estes Park’s Senior Services Division and the Estes Park Medical Center (EPMC) are collaborating to offer a free program on Wednesday, March 23 at 1:00 p.m. at the Estes Park Senior Center, 220 Fourth Street. The program will be presented by Mark Gregson, EPMC Interim Chief Executive Officer; Frank Dumont, MD, Estes Park Medical Group Internal Medicine Physician; and Wayne Park, EPMC Foundation Board Member, Vice President, and Chairperson.

The speakers will discuss the three initiatives that encompass the EPMC wellness program: employee wellness, community wellness, and the wellness center. Mark Gregson will explain what EPMC is doing for employee wellness, including the State of Slim classes, Wellness Assessments, resources, lectures, and activities geared toward health and wellness. Dr. Dumont will give an overview of the community initiatives, including their collaborative work with Estes Park School District’s exercise lab and the tracking of student health data. Wayne Park will provide a summary of EPMC Foundation’s work in fundraising for the wellness center. Following the lecture, there will be ample time for questions and answers.

ARE WE BECOMING A ‘BULLY’ SOCIETY? Have you ever been bullied? Probably all of us have. I can remember like it was yesterday that day in eighth grade in a small city in Montana when it was my turn. The boy’s name was Eldon and his house was a block from ours. One day after school I was with several of my buddies passing his house on Tenth Street when he decided that I ‘needed a lesson’. He had been badmouthing one of the boys I was with and I must have reacted in a way he didn’t like. He was much bigger than I so the outcome was never in doubt. He ‘beat the tar’ out of me, broke my glasses, having a good time in the process. To make matters worse his father came out of the house and rooted him on. I hate to be reminded of that day.

I’m not a political writer, but I feel very much today like I did that day years ago. I watch and hear political candidates ‘bully’ other candidates…belittling them, calling them names…denouncing foreign dignitaries, our nation’s heroes, and other nations’ leaders, with the belief that it shows them to be the ‘better person’. What bothers me more is how many people ‘jump on the band wagon’ to, as it were, ‘egg him on’ to continue to abuse people verbally and psychologically. It troubles me that it seems to be validating a trend in our nation…a trend to ‘bully’ others. We have domestic violence…spousal ‘bullying’. We have child abuse…child ‘bullying’, often resulting in injury and even death of young children. We witness it occurring all too often in our schools…resulting in the deaths, by suicide and homicide, of students who are ‘bullied’.

Recently, here in our state there was a ‘shootout’ between the police and a man they were trying to arrest who was dangerously ‘bullying’ others. Fortunately, no one was hurt. He was arrested and sentenced to a lengthy prison term. The school resource officer in that area’s schools, who teaches elementary students about dangers they will face, including bullying, was called to speak to this man’s young son, who had started bullying fellow students. He called the young boy aside and told him that if he kept up doing what he was doing, he would eventually find himself where his father currently ‘resided’. The boy tearfully accepted the reprimand and began to show a different spirit. But why would we expect him to act differently than one who was to be his ‘role model’?

It’s true with us as well, isn’t it? If the people whom we are supposed to look up to…our parents, our politicians, the one we are choosing to be our nation’s leader…are ‘bullies’, showing disregard for anyone who opposes or criticizes them or is different from them, what kind of model is that setting for the young people who grow up in our nation’s homes? I’ve talked recently about the great Boy Scout / Girl Scout programs in our community and their pledges to be respectful, kind, truthful and showing consideration of others. How can we expect them to follow that path if we are, endorse and/or ‘cheer on’ people who lack these qualities. Recently, Kevin Spacey, an actor who recently portrayed the President in a movie, was asked what he thought of such behavior by a candidate. He said, “We’ve seen it before. The candidate’s name was George Wallace.” We don’t want a repeat of the hateful spirit of his campaign in our day.

May God help our nation’s spirit to be more ‘Boy Scout’ than ‘Bully’. Bob

“Legendary Locals (Part III Of V): Lennie Bemis, Harriet Burgess & Estes Park History” If one wanted to know about local Estes Park history, it was best to check with Harriet Burgess.

Harriet met her husband Bill Burgess in 1949 and was bookkeeper at the Old Plantation Restaurant on Elkhorn Avenue.

She immersed herself in local history, becoming the MacGregor Ranch volunteer coordinator for two decades. Burgess also wrote “Then the Women Took Over: The 100 Year History of the Woman’s Club.”

Lennie Bemiss and Harriet Burgess are just two of the 126 profiles in Steve Mitchell’s upcoming book. The remaining Legendary Locals Harriet Burgess (left) and Lee Nagl (right) working together for programs will take place at 2:00 p.m. on the March of Dimes.

On Friday, March 18 at 2:00 p.m., Steve Mitchell will present for the third time in a series of programs through May called "Legendary Locals of Estes Park." His book of the same title, scheduled to be published in April, explores the history of the unique individuals and groups, both past and present, that made a memorable impact on Estes Park. All of the Legendary Locals programs in the series are free and no reservations are required to attend.

In 1972, Lennie Bemiss walked into the Estes Park Library and asked director Ruth Deffenbaugh, “Do you need any volunteers?” From that day forward, Lennie and Ruth developed one of the finest small town libraries in the state.

They attended Colorado Library Association workshops to learn what “the big kids did.” One of their success stories was developing the extensive Colorado Collection, which was uncatalogued and hidden on two tiny shelves.

Mitchell has lived and worked in Estes Park for 36 years. His upcoming book features nearly 160 photographs, many rarely-seen, from archives and personal collections.

Fernando Garcia 11th Grade Fernando has earned a Varsity letter all four years for soccer and he is proud to say he maintains a 3.5 GPA. Three years have gone by since I ceased writing my Estes Park News column called "Thinking Out Loud." What a ball I had writing it, and it developed quite a few fans. Of course, there were some who didn't go for my thoughts, but that is OK. I wrote every week for over a year and a half, and editor Kris Hazelton only challenged one article I wrote about capital punishment.

In Colorado, the only good tomato is a homegrown one. Colorado State University Extension master gardener, Deb Courtner, will discuss how to cultivate tomatoes, carrots, lettuce and other fresh produce in containers. The program will

New Fire Alarm System Installation At The Library Beginning Tuesday, March 15, contractors will begin the installation of a new fire detection/alarm system at the Estes Valley Library. This will bring the library up to current fire code stands, thus enhancing the safety of the facility for our library patrons.

The project could last more than a week and while the library is remaining open during the installation process, parts of the facility will be cordoned off for public safety purposes. Every effort will be made by library staff to ensure minimal impact to our patrons.

The Estes Park Nonprofit Resource Center will host a free workshop, “Introduction to Finding Funders: a facilitated webinar” for nonprofit organizations on Tuesday, March 22 from 10 – 11:30 a.m. in the Computer Classroom at the Estes Valley Library.

This session provides an in-depth introduction to one of the key online tools for finding funders, Foundation Directory Online Professional. Learn how to create customized searches to develop lists of prospective foundation and corporate donors that will match your nonprofit organization's funding needs.

With Foundation Directory Online you can search for foundations that support programs and organizations like yours, fund in your geographic area, and many other criteria.

Girl Scout Cookie Sale Ends March 14th The Girl Scouts in Estes Park have been all over town for the past couple of weeks, and we hear that the sale of cookies is going quite well. Girls are making plans for upcoming celebrations, trips and events to be paid for with their individual and troop cookie profits.

If you need more cookies, but haven’t yet connected with girls, or if you’ve already eaten up your first supply, and need more (we hope!), please call our Service Unit Cookie Chair, Breeyan Edwards at 970-646-6555.

Between now and March 14th, when the 2016 cookie sale ends, there are quite a few scheduled times where booth sales will be conducted at the Estes Park Safeway Store.

Brownies, Juniors and Cadette Girl Scouts, with their adult partners, will be there quite a few evenings starting at about 4 p.m., and next weekend, March 11, 12 & 13, almost all day every day. So, you see, you have many opportunities to stock up your shelves, pantries and freezers for the coming year. Cookies really do keep well, but they are also good to give away as gifts, to take to club meetings, church socials,

family get-togethers, parties or just to enjoy all by yourself!

Girl Scouts will also take donations for “Home Town Heroes” programs, when the cash will be used to purchase boxes of cookies which the girls will donate to worthy causes, including Crossroads, the Fire Department, the Pet Association and others.

Estes Smoke Alarm Challenge Our thoughts are with the families who lost their homes and property due to last week’s fire. We should use this unfortunate incident as a reminder that up-todate and working smoke alarms help ensure the safety of family, friends and guests. Please make sure your home, rental property and/or hotel has smoke alarms appropriately installed.

Important points about smoke alarms: -Install smoke alarms in every bedroom, outside each sleeping area and on

every level of your home.

-For the best protection, interconnect all smoke alarms so when one sounds they all sound.

-Replace the batteries in your smoke alarms twice a year (when you change your clocks, change your batteries.)

-Replace all smoke alarms in your home every 8-10 years (if the unit is yellowed or doesn’t have a date stamp within the last 8-10 years, it needs to be replaced.)

The Estes Valley Fire Protection District has issued a challenge to the community to ensure every home and rental unit has up-to-date and working smoke alarms.

After checking your own, help spread the word using social media. Take a photo while testing or replacing a smoke alarm, post it with the hashtag #estessmokealarmchallenge and challenge five of your friends to do the same. Together we can make the Estes Valley safer for everyone!

An Evening With Western Art This Friday, March 11 “An Evening with Western Art” will be presented at the Estes Park Museum from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. this Friday, March 11th. The program will engage participants with the subject matter, media, styles and techniques used by artists who portray the spirit of the American West. Light refreshments will be served. Seating is limited to the first 60 guests.

The leadership of the Estes Park Western Heritage Foundation, Inc., and the Estes Park Museum Friends & Foundation, Inc., have joined together to present this exciting evening as a pre-event for the Windows to the West Art Show and Sale.

The Museum’s director, Derek Fortini, and art educator Peter Gaustad will facilitate participant discussion to promote better understanding and appreciation of American Western art.

Local collectors Dr. Bert Cushing and Dr. Bob and Linda Moak will provide several pieces from their private collections for the program. Fine examples of oil, watercolor, graphite, and pastel art and bronze sculpture have been selected. The Museum also will display pieces from its collection of local artwork by outstanding artists from the pioneer period of Estes Park.

“An Evening with Western Art” will be informative and entertaining, whether you are new to Western art or a seasoned collector. Please come – the evening will be enriched by your questions and the experiences you share.

Third Annual Whiskey Warm Up This Saturday Estes Park Celebrates Winter and Whiskey during Third Annual Whiskey Warm Up Weekend With 16 craft distillers offering tastes of their spirits from booths set up throughout George Hix Riverside Plaza, Estes Park’s 3rd Annual Whiskey Warm Up promises to be a true celebration of the tradition of warming up from the inside out.

The festival from 1 to 4 p.m. on March 12 will showcase bourbon, gin, rye, whiskey, rum and vodka produced in distilleries from near the western Colorado border to one from just down the block.

Among those who will be participating are distilleries from Denver, Colorado Springs, Parker, Fort Collins, Lyons, Buena Vista, Greeley, Breckenridge, Golden and Palisade. The distilleries’ products are as varied as their hometowns. One producer uses an old moonshine recipe, another has mastered a blend of corn, malted rye and barley mash, and still another mills the grains used before cooking them to a complex sour mash and completing the distilling process.

Local Physician Groups Working Together To Improve Community Health Estes Park’s three physician groups have partnered to address our community’s top health concerns. Estes Park Medical Group, Timberline Medical Clinic and Salud Family Health Center formed the Rural Estes Alliance for Community Health (REACH) to strengthen our rural healthcare system, provide and support community-wide health-improvement initiatives, and help shape our community’s social and physical environments to promote good health for all.

The three clinics pooled their patient diagnosis data, which revealed three predominant health concerns in our community: issues related to being overweight or obese, hypertension (high blood pressure) and hyperlipidemia (high cholesterol). This baseline data drove the decision to initially focus the alliance’s efforts on weight management. Hypertension and hyperlipidemia are often a result of being overweight so focusing on that issue should also show results in the other two. REACH set a goal for the majority of Estes Valley residents to have a body mass index within the healthy range of 18.5 to 24.9 (body mass index, or BMI, is a measure of weight compared to height.) Currently, 45% of the clinics’ combined patient populations fall within that range and it is anticipated to take at least two years for that to reach 50%.

“We know that with the right tools, individuals can be extremely successful at making lasting behavior changes to lose weight and improve their health,” said Dr. Frank D. Dumont, internal medicine physician at Estes Park Medical Group.

“With our three clinics working together we will be able to equip more people with proven tools that will help them achieve and maintain a healthy weight.”

Providing mutually reinforcing educational programs for community members is one method that REACH is employing to achieve the group’s goal.

Physicians and other care providers from the partner organizations are presenting community classes and programs on different topics that relate to weight management and health. Estes Park Medical Center is now holding their third session of CU’s STATE of SLIM classes for weight management and regularly holds wellness programs at the Estes Park Senior Center. Timberline provides chronic disease self-management classes using a program from Stanford University. Salud recently finished a series of Food for Life nutrition and cooking classes focused on the health and wellness benefits of a diet rich in vegetables, fruits, grains, and legumes. In April, all three clinics are participating in a community reads series being offered at the Estes Valley Library with physicians discussing books on exercise and diet.

“Diet plays such an important role in

health and there is a lot of misinformation out there,” said Dr. John Stanton, family medicine physician at Salud Family Health Center. “It is important for us to provide valid information and guidance so individuals can focus on sustainable, healthy choices rather than fad diets.”

REACH is also partnering with Rocky Mountain National Park and the Estes Valley Recreation and Park District on initiatives that will affect our community’s health in the long-term by encouraging active outdoor pursuits. Within the next several months, physicians in all three clinics will begin prescribing hikes and walks in the National Park and our valley’s open spaces. REACH representa-

tives have also provided support and input on local trail extensions to make our village more pedestrian and cyclist friendly as well as connecting it to trails in RMNP. “The easier we make it for people to safely get around on foot and by bike, the more you will see individuals incorporating those activities into their daily life,” said Dr. Paul W. Fonken, family medicine physician and medical director of Timberline Medical. “And all of those added increments of exercise provide a physical, mental and emotional benefit.”

REACH is one of 24 community-based alliances in Colorado that are effectively collaborating to make positive changes in the health and well-being of residents.

As part of the Colorado Network of Health Alliances, a statewide learning network convened by the Colorado Coalition for the Medically Underserved, REACH is at the forefront of a statewide movement to drive improvements in access and delivery of care, and overall population health. Chase Stanley is a two year old yellow lab mix who is a neutered male about 40 lbs. He is housetrained and friendly and great on a leash.

Both dogs are very nice, friendly with people and other dogs and do great together, although they are available to adopt separately. Sarge and Stanley were recovered from a high kill shelter in southern Colorado. The kitties came from a hoarding situation and all pets need and deserve forever, loving homes.

By Chapin Lane Fire In the aftermath of the devastating fire on March 4, a "phoenix" of wonderfully helpful ideas is rising from the ashes.

Community resource groups, local churches, school leadership groups such as BIONIC Team and Dare to Care clubs along with the Salvation Army, Red Cross and Crossroads ministries are collaborating to help the families recover from their devastating losses.

1. Priority #1: We need to secure permanent housing effective 5-1/16 for four families; anyone with leads for families can contact Jose_Almeida@psdr3.k12.co.us ** Eva at Crossroads reports: families have the necessities covered and temporary housing secured until April 30, 2016.

2. Crossroads targeted collection: need TP, paper towels, toiletry items and spaghetti sauce, people can drop these items off at any school or at Crossroads on Dry Gulch Road.

Boy Scout Food Drive This Saturday To Benefit Crossroads Ministry This Saturday, March 12 (9 a.m. until 5 p.m.) Estes Park Boy Scout Units will conduct a “Scouting for Food” collection at the Estes Park Safeway to help benefit the Crossroads Ministry Food Bank in Estes Park.

Easter will be soon here (March 27) and Dr. Tim McLemore, Crossroads Ministry’s Executive Director is anxious to restock Crossroad’s shelves to prepare for its annual Easter distribution. Estes has many seasonal workers, and by this time late in winter, Crossroads has distributed much of its food.

He is a devoted parent of a high school athlete, but that’s not why he’s been there for more than two decades. He’s there to ensure the well-being of his community’s student - athletes.

As a certified family nurse practitioner, Weibel cares for about 1,600 patients at UCHealth’s Timberline Medical in Estes Park. That’s his full-time job, but as a former high school coach, he has a passion for helping youth.

“I want these students to excel and be healthy,” he said.

aid in his education, resulting in his B.M.Ed. degree from Vandercook College of Music in Chicago. When he and his wife, the music teacher at Eagle Rock School, moved to Estes Park, Juan became involved in several projects here, including coaching the high-school percussionists.

Nobody wanted him to leave long enough to complete his community service in Ecuador, so the Ecuadorian officials allowed him to fulfill those 300 hours here.

After researching hand-written pieces of Ecuadorian music that have never been published, he was able to convert three of them by means of Sibelius software into printed notation and split out the score and individual parts for each member of the EPHS and Village Concert Bands.

The third Ecuadorian piece that Juan has transcribed is Dolencias, which means ailments or griefs. It was originally a duet in the form of an Albazo, to be performed at dawn before a celebration, written by Ben-

itez-Valencia. Once again this piece has an unusual rhythm for North Americans, with a three-against-two feel.

The combined bands will play both Dolencias and a beautifully melodic suite by Malcolm Arnold, well-known British composer, entitled Prelude, Siciliano, and Rondo. The band members have found the Siciliano running through their minds all week, not just during rehearsals, so those who attend should come prepared to be haunted by that lovely melody as well as several others, in additions to the Ecuadorian rhythms from both concert bands long after they leave.

The performance of this cosmopolitan bouquet of melodies and rhythms is a gift from both the EPHS High-school Band and the Village Band, offered free of charge at the EPHS auditorium on Wednesday, March 16 at 7:00 p.m. The public is warmly invited to enjoy it with them.

Woman’s Club Extends Thanks For Successful Bingo Night To The Editor: Kudos and thanks to all who donated, helped and/or participated in our wonderful, successful Estes Park Woman’s Club fundraising bingo night at the American Legion Hall on March 4th. Our members and guests came out in droves to enjoy a fun night of food, a silent auction, raffle and bingo. For those who were not there, you missed a great time of comradery and an opportunity to serve our community with funds raised by the Estes Park Woman’s Club. Hope you have an opportunity to join in the next time.

Dear Community Supporters, This week I was visiting Estes Park, and I decided to use my Duck Race 2015 certificate to have a light lunch at The Wheel Bar before heading back to Denver. I was a bit disappointed that the Wheel does not serve lunch, and I did not want to use my certificate on drinks before driving, so I turned to leave. The bartender followed me and asked for the certificate (which I was just going to throw away), and handed me $20 in cash. "Have lunch some-

Religion & Philosophy Group Meeting March 16 On Wednesday, March 16, 2016 at 9:30 a.m. in the Senior Center of Estes Park, the Religion and Philosophy Group will sponsor a discussion of the book Wrestling With Jesus. The author, D.K. Maylor will lead the discussion with those who have read the book.

Wrestling With Jesus is D. K. Maylor’s fictional interview with Jesus. But although the book is technically fiction, the content of the book is not. And although Maylor’s interlocutor is Jesus, it is an unfamiliar Jesus as he is based on Maylor’s refiguring of Jesus, supportable by academically verifiable sources (Biblical Scholarship) and his own analyses and reflections on the Old and New Testaments.

Maylor and Jesus spend an entire day by a river in the woods discussing, in a most hilarious fashion, everything from the manner in which the message of Jesus has been understood (erroneously) and preached to the manipulation of Jewish scriptures by Christians to suit their own evangelical purposes. Fundamental to Maylor’s refigured (faithfully reconstructed and rendered) Jesus is the meaning of “spiritual enlightenment” and “the kingdom of God is within you” as understood by Jesus.

DK Maylor is a native of south Texas but has been a Colorado resident for the past five years. He majored in Journalism at Texas State University and is a former small business owner. Raised early

30 years in the Christian church, he once considered entering seminary but later decided against it. Those who read his book will come to understand why. Maylor is still very much on the spiritual path but no longer a man who reads the Bible literally.

Those of us convening the Religion and Philosophy Group consider one of our objectives as recovering and reminding ourselves of what is of timeless relevance in the great cultural and spiritual traditions (humanistic and religious). Sometimes this requires serious “reading and digging” into the written sources which have come to be misinterpreted and misrepresented over time—a form of literary archaeology. Wrestling With Jesus, we believe, represents that kind of effort motivated by a deep personal search.

George Guthrie, one of the founders of this group and a practitioner himself of such efforts, called it a remarkable book and was most impressed with it. Those who have not read the book are invited to listen to the discussion.

The Religion and Philosophy Group meets on the third Wednesday of every month usually in the Senior Center. The name notwithstanding, the group has hosted and continues to welcome competent presentations on all kinds of contemporary, historical, and perennial issues. Presentations are free and open to people of all ages, persuasions, and eccentricities.

Margery Giguere Born January 25, 1928 and raised in St Paul, MN, the daughter of English and Irish parents, Margery attended St Luke’s parish school; St Joseph’s Academy High School; University of Minnesota and Avila College in Kansas City, Mo. Margery met R. James Giguere while attending University of Minnesota and they were married at St Luke’s Parish Church in 1948.

Upon his graduation from University of Minnesota in 1950, Margery and her family relocated to Muscatine, IA, then St Joseph, MO, Kansas City, MO, Marion, IN and finally, on retirement, to Estes Park, CO. Margery began her work career by rising five children, Beth, Bob, Paul, Mary and Ann. When Ann entered school, Margery volunteered in the parish school assisting in the classroom. She then pursued training in Montessori Education that resulted in her appointment to the Montessori Pre-school program at Kansas City’s Jewish Community Center. Later, Margery joined Family Features Editorial Syndicate as a sales person creating food feature articles for newspapers and magazines.

In addition to work, Margery was an active advocate for disadvantaged and voiceless children, the elderly and troubled youth. As an example, she served as a Court Appointed Child Advocate in several states charged with speaking up for children who are in the court system without the benefit of a parent or other advocate focused solely on the child’s needs.

Margery has always been active in her parish church, especially with Christian Family Movement and other programs focused on strengthening families and helping families parent troubled children. Her passion was always to see

Ray Novy Estes Park resident Ray Novy died peacefully at the Estes Park Medical Center Tuesday evening March 8, 2016 of O.A. (“old age” as his father would always say). He was 91 years old. Raymond Frank Novy was born April 14, 1924 in Berwyn, IL. His parents were Albert and Helen (Liska) Novy. Ray graduated from the Illinois Institute of Technology in Chicago with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Mechanical Engineering. On June 27, 1953 he married Joan Heymann in Chicago, and shortly thereafter, brought into the world 2 daughters: Susan in 1955 and Sandra in 1958. Ray worked as an engineer for the Punch-Lok Company for 27 years, designing the patented hose-clamp for attaching train cars together; and Dreis and Krump Company, both in Illinois.

When they moved to Denver, he designed the machining for making clamps for attaching street lights to the street light poles for the Band It Company . After retiring, Ray and Joan moved to Estes Park, CO where he was a member of Mountain View Bible Fellowship. He started playing the

Margery has impacted thousands of lives, first, by her living example and then by sharing the wisdom that was her core faith in God and a true passion to see others achieve their goals and dreams. She was a living testimony of someone who truly understood that faith is the first step toward success.

Margery is proceeded in death by her parents, Trew Frank Poole and Lucile Egan Poole; her brother Francis Egan Pool and his wife Joan McDonald Poole and her son Robert (Bob) James Giguere, Jr (Rosie Giguere). She leaves behind her husband of 67 years, R. James Giguere, children Elizabeth Giguere (Rusty Luthe), Paul Giguere (Betsy Giguere), Mary Giguere (David Newton) and Ann Giguere (David Goodman); nine grandchildren, Nicole Renee Giguere, Nicholas Giguere, Daniel Giguere (Taylor Giguere), Christopher Giguere (Bree Giguere), Timothy Giguere, Patrick Giguere (Kelly Giguere), Alex Newton (Allison Newton), Jesse Newton and Max Hall; five great grandchildren, Anthony Giguere, Regan Giguere, Tristan Giguere, Finley Giguere and Lincoln Giguere.

A mass of The Christian Burial celebrated Margery’s life on Wednesday March 9, 2016 at Our Lady of The Mountains Church in Estes Park. Visitation took place prior to the Mass at Allnutt Funeral Chapel 1302 Graves Ave. followed by A Rosary recitation.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of The Estes valley in care of Allnutt.

Priscilla Jane Clark Rose Priscilla Jane Clark Rose, 77, of Lakewood, CO, passed peacefully into eternal rest on February 28, 2016, at Cambridge Care Center after courageously facing years of physical challenge, ultimately succumbing to pneumonia. In her lifetime, Rose shared her gifts of hospitality, thoughtfulness, encouragement and gregariousness with all.

Rose was born on June 16, 1938, in Wellington, KS, to the late Elizabeth and William Clark, spending her treasured early years in Shreveport, LA, before moving to Denver, CO, with her family. She was a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority while at Colorado State University in Ft. Collins, CO, and in 1960 married the late James Rose in Denver. In 1985, she switched her roles of homemaker and volunteer to that of retail sales associate for Printemps, Foley's and Macy's.

A turning point in Rose’s life was surviving bacterial meningitis in 1999 and bravely facing the deafening effect of the illness. Equipped with cochlear implants to aid hearing, she moved to Estes Park, CO, in 2002, to be near her sister where she was also a devoted member of the Shepherd of the Mountains Lutheran Church and a member

of PEO. Rose continued to work in retail sales until she retired, then moving to assisted living in Lakewood, CO, to be near her son in 2009.

A beloved sister, mother and "Nanna," Rose is survived by sister Patty (Wes) Hawkins of Estes Park, CO; children Jim (Jean) Rose of Littleton, CO, Anne (Jon) Finstuen of Houston, TX, and Bill (Patty) Rose of Carlsbad, CA; and grandchildren Kyle Rose, Ava Finstuen, Ella Finstuen, Jake Rose, Abby Rose and Josh Rose.

Through her life, Rose loved family gatherings, preparing feasts, sewing and knitting, playing tennis and the piano, and most passionately cheering on the Broncos! She is lovingly remembered for her engaging smile and infectious laughter.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Monday, April 4, 10:30 a.m., at St. Francis Cabrini Catholic Church in Littleton, CO. Interment will be at 2:00 p.m. at Mount Olivet Cemetery in Wheatridge, CO. Richard “Dick” Boynton bassoon at the age of 14, played in many bands and orchestras continuing throughout retirement and clear up to his 91st birthday, which happened to fall on a Village Band rehearsal, where everyone sang and played “Happy Birthday” to him. In Estes Park, he was a member of the Amadeus Trio, the Estes Park Oratorio Orchestra, the Woodland Trio and Quartet, the Village Band and the Denver Concert Band.

Estes Park resident Richard “Dick” Boynton passed away on March 3, 2016, at the age of 87.

Dick was born on January 28, 1929, in Foleyet, Ontario, Canada, to Cecil and Catherine Boynton. He graduated from Parkdale Collegiate Institute in Toronto, Ontario. He worked in life insurance administration in Canada and the United States for 43 years and was actively involved in many nonprofit organizations including Crossroads in Estes Park.

Dick was an active member of Our Lady of the Mountains Catholic Church, member of the Knights of Columbus, member of Sumtimers and Summer Residence Association of Estes Park.

Dick was an amazing son, husband, father, brother, grandfather, uncle, and friend to many. He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers.

He is survived by his wife of 56 years,

Patricia Boynton, of Estes Park, Colorado; his brother Bill Boynton, of Indian Land, South Carolina; and h! is six children, Paul (Barb) of Excelsior, MN; Thomas of Indianapolis, IN; Susan (Nancy) of Morrison, CO; Kelly (Paul) of Lino Lakes, MN; Robert (Susan) of Carmel, IN; Christine (Will) of Highlands Ranch, CO, and nine grandchildren.

Dick was an avid golfer and member of the Estes Park Golf Course Men’s Club. He was also an avid game and card player as well as a lifetime fan of Notre Dame football and Chicago Cubs baseball.

A memorial mass was held on Tuesday, March 8, 2016, at 10:00 a.m. at Our Lady of the Mountains Catholic Church in Estes Park. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made in Dick’s name to Our Lady of the Mountains Catholic Church or Crossroads of Estes Park.
