Fire fighters generally respond to medical calls in their personal vehicles; as this allows for faster response by officers and medical personnel to assess the emergency and provide medical care.

Temporary Closures To Protect Nesting Raptors In RMNP Each year to protect raptor nesting sites, Rocky Mountain National Park officials initiate temporary closures in the Lumpy Ridge and Sheep Mountain areas of the park. To ensure that these birds of prey can nest undisturbed, specific areas within the park are closed temporarily to public use during nesting season and monitored by wildlife managers. All closures began on March 1 and will continue through July 31, if appropriate. These closures may be extended longer or rescinded at an earlier date depending on nesting activity.

Closures include Checkerboard Rock, Lightning Rock, Batman Rock, Batman Pinnacle, Sundance, Thunder Buttress, The Parish, Alligator Rock, Sheep Mountain, and Twin Owls, Rock One. These closures include the named formations. Closures include all climbing routes, outcroppings, cliffs, faces, ascent and descent routes and climber access trails to the named rock formations. Check the park’s website at

The National Park Service is committed to preserving birds of prey. The same cliffs that are critical for raptors also appeal to climbers. The cooperation of climbing organizations and individuals continues to be essential to the successful nesting of raptors in the park.

Change Your Clocks And Change Your Batteries Daylight-saving time starts Sunday, March 12. The Estes Valley Fire Protection District reminds you to change the batteries in your smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors twice a year when it’s time to change the clocks. This simple act can be lifesaving.

Approximately two-thirds of home fire deaths occur in homes without working smoke alarms. Since most fatal fires occur at night, it’s essential that every home has working smoke alarms to provide an early warning. Working smoke alarms increase the chance of surviving a home fire by 50 percent. For additional protection, automatic fire sprinklers can be installed. They reduce the risk of fire deaths by more than 80 percent.

In addition to changing your smoke alarm and carbon monoxide detector batteries this weekend, the Fire District recommends these additional steps to protect your life, your loved ones, and your home: Know the difference between a battery/maintenance chirp and alarm.

Dust or vacuum smoke alarms when you change the batteries.

Replace smoke alarms every 8-10 years (if the unit is yellowed or doesn’t have a date stamp within the last 8-10 years, it needs to be replaced.)

Install smoke alarms on every level of your home, including the basement, and both inside and outside of sleeping areas.

Install carbon monoxide detectors within 15 feet of all sleeping areas.

For the best protection, equip your home with a combination of ionization and photoelectric smoke alarms or dual sensor alarms.

Interconnect all smoke alarms throughout your home so that when one sounds, they all sound.

Make sure everyone in your home understands the warning of the smoke alarm and knows how to respond.

Review your home escape plan and location of your family’s meeting spot.

Firewood Collection Permits Available For 2017 Season By Lottery From Rocky Mountain National Park Permits are available by lottery to collect previously cut wood generated from hazard tree removals and wildland fuels reduction within Rocky Mountain National Park. Permits are limited to one cord on one day by a scheduled appointment. Over 100 permits are anticipated to be issued on the east side of the park throughout the 2017 season. A $20 nonrefundable administrative fee will be charged for the permit. One day passage beyond the entrance stations is included in the permit fee for firewood gathering purposes only. Appointments for gathering will be scheduled throughout the year (no more than two weeks in advance) at times when roads, weather, park personnel and other park activities are available/favorable for gathering. Permit holders have no guarantee to the type, quality, or size of the wood.

The initial firewood collection site is near Moraine Park (four wheel drive not required). Most of the wood has not been cut into manageable lengths and will require a chainsaw. Trailers and vehicles with more than two axles will not be permitted.

Winners will be contacted by park staff to set up an appointment to obtain the required permit, receive a vehicle and gear inspection, get an orientation to the wood gathering area, and gather the wood. Winners who do not respond within 14 days of being contacted by the park will be removed from consideration.

Town Presents Monthly Economic Dashboard The monthly Economic Dashboard is prepared by the Town of Estes Park as a snapshot of key indicators of the overall health and vibrancy of the economy of the Estes Valley. The report includes the Town's own data as well as data from other agencies to assist local businesses and other entities with their business and strategic planning. Director Hudson commented, "The January 2017 Economic Dashboard has been released and posted at www.estes.org/dashboard With only one month of information for 2017, any trend analysis and projections are subject to significant fluctuation and should be

viewed in that light. As more information becomes available in the next few months, confidence in the trend information will become stronger.

"With that in mind, the January trend data reflect a decrease in visitation to the area. Much of this can be attributed to the January snow storms, but part of this change is also attributable to the closure of U.S. 34. It will be interesting to see the visitation numbers for February, when U.S. 34 was closed for the entire month.

It should also be noted that during January, numerous building permits were issued to individuals and businesses, an increase from 22 in January of 2016 to 74 in January of 2017. This increase did not include any major construction permits, just numerous smaller projects."

Town Seeks Members For Family Advisory Board The Town of Estes Park is looking for 10-15 members to serve on a new voluntary advisory board. The Family Advisory Board advises the Town Board and Town staff on issues of importance to working families in the Estes Valley.

Qualifications for the Family Advisory Board: Members shall reside within the Estes Park School District R-3 for at least one (1) year, have experience with issues facing working families in the Estes Valley, and have adequate time to devote to the Family Advisory Board (at least six (6) hours per month). Members shall continue to be residents of the Estes Park School District R-3 during their term.

Board appointments are for a term of three years; however, the initial appointments will be staggered so that the terms of an equal number of the members ex-

pire each year. Members will be required to attend one meeting per month at a tobe-determined date.

Tiny Home Open House This Saturday At Lumberyard

Bob and John Taylor of Taylor Built Homes are excited to host an open house this Saturday to show off their brand new tiny home they have for sale.

The tiny house concept is sweeping the nation and many people are choosing to downsize the space they live in. The typical American home measures around 2,600 square feet whereas the typical tiny house is between 200 and 400 square feet. Tiny houses come in all shapes, sizes, and forms, and they enable simpler living in a smaller, more efficient space.

People are joining this movement for many reasons, but the most popular reasons include environmental concerns, fi-

nancial concerns, and to live a bigger life, instead of having a bigger house.

Bob and John have been busy constructing this amazing 24 foot long, 230 square foot home which they call, Base Camp 1. Base Camp 1 is a beautiful, custom made tiny home with off the grid capabilities and completely self-sustainable or, you can plug it in for tiny home living at its best.

The inside of the home is all wood with lots of integrated storage. The kitchen features lovely granite countertops, a stainless steel farm sink, three burner stove, an oven and gorgeous hickory cabinets. The home has all LED lighting and a catalytic heater which is very energy efficient. This tiny home has a 50 gallon freshwater tank and a 40 gallon grey water tank.

Base Camp 1 was framed using structural materials, it is maintenance free with a metal roof, metal siding, Anderson windows and is very efficient and solar capable. It was built on a trailer specially engineered for tiny houses, with brakes.

The home has spray foam insulation which makes it very comfortable and quiet inside. It was built to withstand the elements.

New Executive Director For Rocky Mountain Performing Arts Center Following a nationwide search, Estes Performance, Inc., (EPIC) has hired Al Milano as the executive director and director of development for the Rocky Mountain Performing Arts Center. Milano, whose entire professional career has focused on leading arts organizations and running successful capital campaigns, assumed his new responsibilities in Estes Park at the end of January.

“We’re thrilled to add Al to our team,” said Stan Black, EPIC’s board president.

“He has a track record of raising more than $1.7 billion dollars and has been responsible for building five performing arts centers, from the first dollar up.

And besides being a ‘fundraiser’s fundraiser,’ he understands every aspect of running a dynamic and financially sound theater organization.”

Milano most recently served as executive vice president of the AT&T Performing Arts Center in Dallas, TX. He said he was attracted to the Rocky Mountain Performing Arts Center project for both personal and professional reasons.

“This project has so much going for it,” Milano said. “Everything from supporting revenue from the adjacent commercial property to the prime downtown location. But what was really enticing was the opportunity to be involved at an early stage, long before the doors open. It’s important to understand what this center needs to be for the community, and ensure this vision is carried through in everything from the building design to the programming.”

Milano said in addition to the professional challenge, he was drawn to Estes Park because of the beautiful setting and

to be close to family members who live nearby.

The new executive director’s first order of business is to listen and learn.

“I’ve had very interesting conversations with leaders in the arts community. I’ve heard about unique challenges putting on shows in a resort community, especially the critical shortage of rehearsal space.”

Milano said in the coming weeks, he will seek out many more opportunities to speak with business and community leaders, performing artists, and arts lovers.

Stan Black commended the community’s support for the project momentum and achieving the milestone of engaging a world-class arts center leader.

“Many people have dreamed this dream with us, and donated to earlier theater projects,” Black said. “The FOSH funds that were released to us last spring, along with revenue from leasing the future building location to The Barrel, have provided the seed money for the major capital campaign that is soon to come.”

The Rocky Mountain Performing Arts Center will be a state-of-the-art theater and concert hall that will serve as a home for Estes Park’s diverse performing artists as well as other artists and acts from Colorado and throughout the United States.

Construction is expected to begin sometime next year.

In addition to offering exciting entertainment, “the Rocky” is expected to be the largest single economic development project in Estes Park in more than 25 years, creating jobs, generating new sales tax revenues, revitalizing downtown, and increasing business for neighboring commercial properties.

Repertoire Theatre Company Cancels “Relationships” The Estes Park Repertoire Theatre Company sadly announces the cancellation of their next production, “Relationships.”

They are sorry that they had to cancel this Reader’s Theatre play scheduled for production on March 31, April 1, April 2, April 7, April 8, and April 9.

several weeks they have been invaded by all sorts of “bugs” disrupting their rehearsals, etc. Hence the cancellation.

During my tender, younger years, the only way I knew to keep law and order under our roof was to be a tattletale. When there was roughhousing in the living room, which there often was, my angst drove me to stand at my mother’s knee and report, “Ned and Pat are fighting.” I wanted in the worst way for her to stop them, to make right out of wrong, to restore a semblance of calm among all of us who shared a single bathroom.

“Are they drawing blood?” she would ask, barely taking her eyes from the cookie dough blending in the mixer. No. No blood in sight. So she sent me back to the battlefield to deal with my anxiety, which only increased it, or she gave me a beater to lick, which had the opposite affect.

How could she be so unperturbed? Of course, as a fledgling I didn’t understand that allowing children to work out their differences—be it ripping limbs from bodies in a tussle or bartering one-for-three pieces of candy from our Halloween haul— is an important component of skill development. When a parent steps in, young ones are denied the opportunity to figure out on their own how to negotiate, stand up for themselves, pick their battles, win some, lose some, forgive and forget, turn the other cheek (and learn to know a cliché when they hear one).

Sometimes a parent does need to intercede, however.

Everybody’s favorite 95-year-old, Bob Brunson, provided today’s Thunkers, which illustrate ways a mother arbitrates from time to time. Bob didn’t write them, but that doesn’t mean his mother didn’t say some of these universal remarks: •My mother taught me religion. “You better pray that will come out of the carpet.”

•My mother taught me more logic. “If you fall out of that swing and break your neck, you’re not going to Billy’s birthday party.”

•My mother taught me about the science of osmosis. “Shut your mouth and eat your supper.”

Are the arts and sports imperative or simply pleasant diversions? What should a high school graduate know and be able to do?

First, early childhood education research affirms babies need two things: lots of crawling space and plenty of things to discover. Don’t these also help adolescents and adults become autodidacts? If so, what implications are there for our public schools? Second, schools need individuals who can teach their own capacity to learn through what Paulo Freire called “problem-posing education.” How do we find, train and retain such choreographers of learning?

Third, although English is the language of the marketplace, multilingual citizens offer more depth and resonance to the larger community.

What implications does this have for schools? Finally, the poet Gary Snyder once asserted that “all true paths lead through mountains.” Estes Thrives advances an inclusive path for our town, one on which all of us can walk toward a promising future. Please come to the high school on May 11, to help deepen the discussion.

EPNRC “Estes Give Back” Program Spotlights Poppy’s & Mama Rose’s

It’s no secret that Estes Park is all about giving. In the words of Rob Pieper, “Estes Park is a three-legged stool: business, nonprofits, and community.” And no one knows or does philanthropy better than Rob and Julie Pieper, owners of Poppy’s and Mama Rose’s restaurants.

As founding participants of the Estes Park Nonprofit Resource Center’s “Estes Give Back” program, the Piepers understand the value of contributing to their community, and advocate strongly for the Estes Give Back community partnership.

EPNRC started the program as a way for businesses to show their reinvestment in the community in a more efficient and effective way. Estes Give Back business partners pledge to give 1% of sales to Estes Valley nonprofits through donations of cash, in-kind services/merchandise, and/or employee volunteer time. In return, EPNRC provides program discounts, recognition and tools to help businesses better track gifts and to direct their giving to the causes closest to the business owner’s heart and business mission. Business partner dues support Give Back program administration, as well as EPNRC resources, educational programs, and networking opportunities that enable Estes Valley nonprofits to achieve their goals.

Many of us are familiar with some of the ways the Piepers give back to Estes Park, like the Partners Mentoring Youth Red Envelope and Restorative Justice dinners. Rob shared their thinking behind these types of events, that these dinners are an opportunity for these nonprofits to reap a high rate of return that wouldn’t otherwise be available through traditional investing opportunities. A new monthly addition, started this winter, is the Giving Back Thursday program. On the first Thursday of each month, Poppy’s and Mama Rose’s donate

The Estes Park Museum is in need of a new Collections and Research Facility (also known as Phase I of the Estes Park Museum Master Plan). Elizabeth Fogarty, President & CEO of Visit Estes Park presented to a room of nearly 100 Estes Area Lodging Association (EALA) Members on a snowy night, on Feb. 22, at Marys Lake Lodge. Fogarty enthusiastically shared an engaging and informative presentation to a receptive audience. Topics discussed were the seasonal growth throughout last year, new winter marketing campaign programs, Hwy. 34 update, and where VEP is headed in partnership with the community.

The summer season was also discussed, clarifying that Visit Estes Park is now utilizing analytics and data to attract guests who average a longer length of stay, thereby reducing traffic and impact to the community and RMNP, in conjunction with attracting guests with a higher household income, resulting in increasing their economic footprint during their visit to the area.

When Estes Park photographer Fred Payne Clatworthy traveled to the South Pacific islands in 1928, he stretched the truth at both ends.

Upon his arrival in Wellington, New Zealand, he told local reporters he was there on behalf of the National Geographic Society, in pursuit of photographs of dying races, like the Maori.

While his photographs had appeared in the National Geographic magazine, and he had informed the society in advance of this trip, they were certainly not funding it, nor directing it in any way. Fred was more likely using this "calling card" to open doors at the New Zealand government tourist agency, and was probably able to wrangle free transportation and local guides for all the scenic spots he visited on the North Island and South Island because of it.

Upon his return to Estes Park, for some reason he told the local newspaper, or they misunderstood, that he had just returned from the South Sea Islands, New Zealand, and Australia. Ever since then, his photographs of the Pacific that are difficult to identify are labeled as "New Zealand or Australia," when there is absolutely no evidence Fred ever got to

Australia, on this trip or any other. And all of his South Sea island stops were for at most one day each, when the cruise ships he traveled on stopped to take on passengers and mail.

Regardless, he did take along 300 autochrome plates, the balky natural color glass plates he had finally mastered after a decade of experimentation. And he absolutely did send back 50 of these developed plates to the "New Zealand government" upon his return to Estes Park, which have since been destroyed or misplaced.

The Estes Park Archives is holding a bon voyage party this Saturday, March 11 at Molly B's Restaurant on 212 Moraine Avenue for two of its members, who are headed to New Zealand in an attempt to locate the 50 missing autochromes. A Sneak Peek At This Year’s Taste Of Estes Quota Club of Estes Park’s 33rd Annual Taste of Estes will be held on Thursday, April 20 at a brand new location, the YMCA of the Rockies.

From now until the event, the EP News will be featuring participating restaurants that will be at the Taste, just so you can get a sneak peek of what’s in store this year. Check out these fine restaurants/establishments and discover a little bit more about each one.

Rock Cut Brewery What is it that people love about your brewery? We have loved becoming a community gathering spot for Estes Park.

Whether you're a young family with kids, a retired couple, a group of skiers or rock climbers, or anything in between, our taproom is a place to relax and enjoy a freshly-crafted pint of beer. We think that inclusiveness is a really positive quality of the Rock Cut experience.

What are your two most popular items on your menu? Our Interference IPA is by far the most popular beer. Second up is the Enos Pils (Czech Pilsner).

We also find that our special release brews, especially the barrel-aged beers, don't last long in the taproom.

How long has your brewery been in business? Since August 29, 2015 -- so just over 18 months!

Why do you like participating in the Taste of Estes? It's a great opportunity to celebrate all of the Estes Park establishments, and see many of our favorite community members! Quota Club does some incredible work for Estes Park so it's an honor to be part of their event.

What might you serve at this year’s Taste? We'll most likely bring the Enos Pils along with a seasonal beer (TBD).

The Dunraven Inn What is it that people love about your restaurant? We feel that people love the environment at The Dunraven Inn because they know exactly what they will receive when they visit us! Consistency!!

What are your two most popular items on your menu? Our most popular items hands down are the house-made Lasagna and the Halibut.

How long has your restaurant been in business? The Dunraven Inn was originally opened in 1970. We are the forth owners of this wonderful establishment and took over ownership in 2011.

Why do you like participating in the Taste of Estes? The Taste of Estes is another great way to be involved and help support our community. It is also a perfect way to showcase The Dunraven Inn and other restaurants around the area.

What have you served in the past and

what might you serve at this year’s Taste? In the past times at the Taste we have served various items. Our most popular is the Shrimp Scampi, and Panna Cotta dessert, which we will be serving again this year. Last year we also served Grande Mushroom Tortellini.

Hunter’s Chop House What is it that people love about your restaurant? We have a variety of meats, wild game and great whiskey bar in authentic mountain rustic interior, very reasonably priced and always have winter specials for locals; away from downtown crowds, next to the lake Estes and have plenty of free parking for guests What are your two most popular items on your menu? Wild Game Sampler and the Black Angus Ribeye.

How long has your restaurant been in business? The restaurant was originally open in 2002, we are the third generation of owner - took over January 15th 2015.

Why do you like participating in the Taste of Estes? We would like to show the changes and new things that our restaurant is going through, show what we have and specialize in.

What have you served in the past and what might you serve at this year’s Taste? Under new ownership, we haven't participated in Taste. This year we are thinking of bringing some game or meat as this is our main specialty!

Snowy Peaks Winery What is it that people love about your winery? We have a comfortable atmosphere for relaxing with friends and family and It’s a low-key environment for learning more about wine.

What are your two most popular items on your menu? Each person has unique preferences when it comes to wine. We offer a broad selection to satisfy many different palates, so we don’t notice any major trends in favorite wines.

How long has your winery been in business? Almost twelve years Why do you like participating in the Taste of Estes? This will be our first year.

We are very excited to be able to support such a great cause and to be included among the many great restaurants Estes has to offer.

What might you serve at this year’s Taste? We will bring three white wines and three reds, but the exact varieties will be a surprise.

Peppers What is it that people love about your restaurant?

What we hear quite often is our customers love how fresh our food is and how they can pick what they want on

their meal. We prepare all our meats and salsas/sauces here using fresh and healthy ingredients.

What are your two most popular items on you menu? I would have to say burritos and fish tacos. It varies some weeks.

Beef enchiladas are also very popular.

How long has your restaurant been in business? We are having our 5th Anniversary this April. So five years, Yay! Why do you like participating in the Taste of Estes? This will be our 5th year at the Taste of Estes! We feel its great exposure for our restaurant. People that have never been to Peppers can get an idea of what we have to offer and how good our food is. It's also a great opportunity for Peppers to give back to the community through the Quota Club.

What have you served in the past and what might you serve at this year's Taste? I think the first year we just did chips and our fresh salsas. Other years we have served mini Burritos, Buffalo Nachos and our awesome Green Chili, both Pork and Vegetarian. I think this year we will do a Taco Bar with mini tacos.

Cinnamon’s What is it that people love about your bakery? People love the home-made fresh out of the oven variety of cinnamon rolls!

What are your two most popular items on your menu? Classic Cinnamon Rolls and Pecan Sticky Buns.

How long has your bakery been in business? May, 2016.

Why are you excited to participate in the Taste of Estes? This is a new experi-

ence for me - looking forward to introducing my product to my community.

What might you serve at this year’s Taste? We will be serving a variety of cinnamon rolls and cinnamon roll bread pudding!

Kind Coffee What is it that people love about your restaurant? The great coffee and community space.

What are your two most popular items on your menu? Centennial latte (made with cubans style espresso shots- cinnamon and sugar and the raw) and Vegetarian Breakfast Burrito.

How long has your restaurant been in business? Since 1998 as the Estes Park Coffee Company and since 2004 as Kind Coffee.

Why do you like participating in the Taste of Estes? Great community supporting event through Quota Club and an opportunity to showcase ourselves to folks who may have never been to Kind Coffee.

What have you served in the past and what might you serve at this year’s Taste? Drip coffee. This year we are presenting our 100 Year Roast, in celebration of Estes Park’s Centennial.

STRENGTHEN YOUR ‘COUPLE-POWER’ Many years ago my wife and I went on a ‘Marriage Encounter Weekend’. This was an organized retreat for married couples who wanted to strengthen their relationship… their ‘Couple Power’. The weekend was not designed to ‘save marriages’, but to make ‘good marriages better’. The schedule involved several husband-wife speakers who told us how to improve our communication and other relationship skills. We spent time alone writing letters to each other about things that couples needed to talk about to make their marriages better.

Following the letter-writing, we would give each other time to read what we had written and then we would ‘dialogue’, explaining and clarifying what we had written in the letters to each other. We were truly blessed by that sharing experience.

The following week we received a marriage encounter newsletter, entitled simply: ‘Couple-Power’. In it was a description of what often occurs in marriages where people become careless in their interactions with each other. Perhaps, as you read it, you will recognize some similarities to relationships that people you know have. It is entitled:

THE WALL “Their wedding picture mocked them from the table, these two whose minds no longer touched each other. They lived with such a heavy barricade between them that neither battering rams of words, nor artilleries of touch could break it down.

Somewhere, between the oldest child’s first tooth and the youngest daughter’s graduation, they lost each other. Throughout the years, each slowly unraveled the tangled ball of string called ‘self’, and, as they tugged at stubborn knots each hid his searching from the other. Sometimes she cried at night and begged the whispering darkness to tell her who she was. He lay beside her, snoring like a hibernating bear, unaware of her winter. Once, when they had made love, he wanted to tell her how afraid he was of dying, but, fearful to show his naked soul, he spoke instead of her beauty.

She took a course in modern art, trying to find herself in colors splashed upon a canvas, and complained to other women about men who were insensitive. He climbed into a tomb called farm records and the computer and wrapped his mind in a shroud of paper figures. Slowly, the wall between them rose, cemented by the mortar of indifference. One day, reaching out to touch each other, they found a barrier they could not penetrate, and recoiling from the coldness of the stone, each retreated from the stranger on the other side. For, when love dies, it is not in a moment of angry battle, nor when fiery bodies lose their heat. It lies panting, exhausted, expiring at the bottom of a wall it could not scale.”

This is a good reminder of how relationships deteriorate when we take them for granted. This is certainly evident in some marriages where people are ‘married singles’, but it is also true in relationships with our children and other family members. Whenever we fail to take time for and make efforts to strengthen relationships, they will become weaker. So let’s think of all those ‘special people’ in our lives and draw closer to them.

Tibetan Singing Bowls For Healing Offered Monthly At Senior Center

Local Tibetan Reiki Master and Bowl Healer Jeff Grissom will continue to offer free Tibetan Singing Bowl Healing Sessions on the third Friday of each month at the Senior Center. The next session will be Friday, March 17 at 1:00 p.m.

Jeff Grissom operates a private healing practice in Estes Park using the ancient techniques of Tibetan Bowl Healing and Reiki. The Fine Arts Guild of the Rockies musical production of The Secret Garden is almost audience-ready. Talented local director Chris Wood called for auditions in early January and the cast has been rehearsing ever since.

The Secret Garden--written by Marsha Norman and composer Lucy Simon and based on the novel by Frances Hodgson Burnett--will be performed March 17, 18, 19, 24 and 25 at Hempel Auditorium on the YMCA of the Rockies campus.

The story is about ten year old Mary Lennox who has lost both her parents to cholera. She is sent to live with her widowed uncle in his secluded mansion in the British countryside. There, Mary finds other dispirited souls: her uncle who has lost his wife and her uncle's son Colin who is crippled, not only physically but emotionally as he bears the guilt of his mother's death. Mary through determination, love, and a secret garden leads the way to great healing.

The cast has enjoyed the hard work needed to create a quality musical production. What they find rewarding and/or surprising in the process says volumes about the quality of the play and music as well as the expertise of director Chris Wood, set designer Greig Steiner, stage managers Kathy Littlejohn and Loanne Forschmiedt, and light/sound technician Kent Smith.

Haley Bart one of the two young actors who plays Mary Lennox feels the most rewarding "part of working on The Se-

cret Garden is getting to work with the director, Chris. It's fun to hear what he envisions for the play and then we all work together to make it happen. It's so much fun to see how every actor interprets their character and brings them to life."

Benjamin F. Edwards who performs as Dichon and has assisted Greig Steiner on set building states, "I think the most exciting thing about working on The Secret Garden for me has been seeing the cast really come into their own and bring the characters to life. I have also enjoyed working with Greig on the set construction. I've learned a lot from him and I have really got a behind-the-scenes look at his artistic process. I'm truly grateful to have this opportunity to work with all of these fine people."

Christi Florence, who plays Rose Lennox, adds "The stage set design is beautiful with a variety of colors and creative lighting. This along with the custom made furniture and expertly chosen costumes set the mood and atmosphere for a truly moving performance by all cast members."

For some actors, The Secret Garden story itself has inspired them. Michelle Taylor who plays Martha, explains "I've been most surprised and pleased by the unexpected depth of The Secret Garden's truly moving story. The music is simply beautiful as well."

Several actors have found their characters compelling. Nancy Bell who plays Lily felt that the most rewarding part of

a very deep character with many levels of personality and emotions.

Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s really fun to discover out to play those different emotions."

Mary Hunter who portrays Mrs. Medlock finds her character challenging for other reasons. "I love being part of seeing everyone find their character and being part of making it all come together...even if my character is not very nice. I am part of the whole picture and proud to play my role to the fullest to make this production the best performance ever. Personally, it has helped me grow as a person and actor...and how to be a part of reaching out to a cast who are amazing and could easily make me an outcast. Pun intended!"

Other actors have found their return to the stage most rewarding. Bert Bergland explains, "For me, the most incredible experience is the joy and stress of returning to the stage after 29 years, and doing so in such a challenging production. Learning lines at my age is far more taxing than when I was in my 30's, and the English language spoken in British accent and vernacular is noticeably more difficult to learn as the English seem to have a difficult time speaking proper Western Kansas English! Is it any wonder we left to colonize America?"

Hannah Heckerson, Estes Park High School Counselor, who plays Alice also appreciates returning to the stage: "Being in The Secret Garden has been extremely rewarding because it is the first show I have been in since beginning my collegiate journey." I am "starting to pursue my passion for singing and theatre again after six years." It "is only fitting with this show as [The Secret Garden] was my first professional show when I was 10 years old. Things have come full circle and I feel truly in the right place and on the right path."

And some actors enjoy the broader experience of performance art.

Rachel Ryan writes, "It's been absolutely amazing to see how much work goes into a single production. It goes beyond the hours put in for rehearsals; the design and building of the set, the "behind the scenes" maneuvering of the technical side/the orchestra. The dedication of the director and cast all need to come together just right to make it all work.

It's been incredible to see how hard everyone works, but especially in these last few weeks! The Secret Garden is a spectacular musical and I

couldn't be more proud of this cast!"

And Bill McNamara, who plays Major Shelley, sums up his experience, "The enthusiasm and cooperation of all the cast is a joy to behold."

Performances are March 17, 18, 19, 24 and 25 at Hempel Auditorium on the YMCA of the Rockies campus. Friday and Saturday performances are at 7:30 p.m. and the Sunday matinee is at 2 p.m. Tickets are $12 for adults, $10 for seniors and $8 for youth 18 and under.

Barkley is a very healthy 8-9 year old spaniel mix, he is good with people, other dogs and loves cuddling with everyone! He is a nice, small dog who only weighs 19 lbs. Barkley is not recommended for a home with kids under 10.

Sophia is an eight year old long hair calico. She is looking for a nice older person or couple to adopt her. She is beautiful but a bit shy and should go to a home without children.

Carl has had a rough life and is need of a new, loving, forever home. Carl is two years old, neutered and fully clawed. He came to the Animal Hospital of the Rockies from Greeley after being found on the streets with a can on his head. The can damaged his left eye and his injured eye had to be removed. He is a very sweet cat and a vet tech at AHR has been fostering him for the past few months. Carl needs someone that is loving and understanding. He is friendly and playful and

especially loves to play with his mousie toys.

Calling All Book Clubs: It’s Nomination Time We often think of reading as a solitary experience, and that peace and quietude of self can be joyous. But at its finest, reading is also a prelude to savoring its next joy: discussing and sharing a book with others.

The National Endowment for the Arts states, “Studies show that reading for pleasure reduces stress, heightens empathy, improves students' test scores, slows the onset of dementia, and makes us more active and aware citizens. Book clubs and community reading programs extend these benefits by creating opportunities to explore together the issues that are relevant to our lives.

Locally, participating in a book club is an ideal way to combine the joy of reading with community conversations. Next week, the Library asks our local book clubs to help us with one of this year’s most engaging tasks: nominating the 2017 One Book One Valley finalists—to seek that special book which our entire village will be invited to read this fall.

If you’re a book club participant, make sure you and/or someone from your club joins us this Thursday, March 16 at 7 p.m. for the Estes Valley Library’s Book Club Social. We’ll introduce you to other reading enthusiasts, chat about favorite new titles and well-loved classics, while enjoying some light refreshments.

And, most importantly, we’ll invite each club to nominate their recommendation of a book to be among the titles in the running for the next One Book One Valley. Then, this spring, we’ll encourage

School activities Carlie loves are soccer and cross country and being a member of National Honor Society and Key Club. She was the Captain of the cross country team in 2016, and Captain of the soccer team in 2015 and 2016 and Secretary of the Key Club.

Outside of school she enjoys skiing, running, reading and babysitting her niece.

After high school Carlie will be attending Colorado State University where she will major in Chemical and Biological Engineering.

From its beginning in 2011, One Book One Valley was modeled after successful all-community reading programs around the country. At its heart, the concept is rooted in the larger aspiration of positive civic engagement—the idea that we as a community are better and stronger when we participate in conversations and share ideas, explore differing opinions, listen respectfully, and join in healthy dialogue.

We took a one-year hiatus from the program during our Library Centennial year, hosting instead a multitude of smaller book and author events throughout 2016. This fall will welcome a return to the popular “One Book” format, featuring a month of programs, discussions, and thematic special events.

As someone told us recently, “One Book One Valley is great because it allows everyone to feel a part of a much bigger happening, even if you can only make it to just one program during the season.”

We need our local book clubs to help.

Book club readers have some of the keenest insights into titles that will make for a great season of discussion. We encourage you to bring your best ideas and recommendations to the Library this Thursday. We’ll supply the refreshments, introduce you to new friends, and facilitate an evening to celebrate our most enthusiastic book lovers.

Come and help us set the stage for an exciting vote this spring, and a great One Book One Valley Season this fall.

Community Thrift Shop Now Open Seven Days A Week The spring season has brought with it a few exciting changes for Estes Park Community Thrift Shop. First, we are proud to announce we are now open seven days a week. After collecting feedback from customers, EPCT decided to open on Sundays beginning in February. Our volunteers have helped facilitate this change greatly. For example, our President, Dan Norton, works all seven days per week with no form of compensation! We have also introduced new daily sales, allowing customers to take advantage of a different sale each day of the week for six days per week! Sales are displayed on the home page of our website, epthrift.com.

Last, by increasing our number of operating hours, EPCT has developed an in-

creased need for volunteers. Thus, we have introduced new volunteer incentives. Each day you volunteer with us (for any number of hours), you will receive one free bag filled with the merchandise of your choice, and can fill additional bags of merchandise for $2.50 per bag.

Volunteers also receive a first look at items before they go out on shelves and 50% off all items in the store. More changes are planned for 2017 and 2018, along with approximately 20 more benefit sales scheduled this year in support of other local non-profits. The book of life is different for each of us, and helping people craft their wishes for the final chapter is a rewarding volunteer opportunity. Estes Park has taken on Advance Care Planning as a free, community wide initiative to help residents over the age of 18 complete their advance directives (documents for medical treatment) - and volunteers are needed to make this a success! Training is provided and support is ongoing for all volunteers.

The 6th annual Estes Park Job & Volunteer Fair will be held on Wednesday, March 22, 2017 from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Estes Park Event Center.

Dozens of paid as well as volunteer opportunities will be available at the event.

Loving Spirit Workshop Presented At Eisenhower Medical Center In CA Members of the Estes-based non-profit, Loving Spirit, have just returned from a highly successful outreach trip to Rancho Mirage and Palm Springs, California.

Working in collaboration with the Eisenhower Medical Center’s Wellness Institute, they conducted a two-day grief and loss workshop for residents of southern California, as well as a speaking engagement at the Desert Aids Project, and private briefings for donors Dayle E. Spencer, President of the of Loving Spirit speaks at the events.

Chair of the Board of Loving Spirit, said “I am so proud of our team who worked hard to deliver an outstanding workshop that was completely free for all the participants. Former Estes Park resident, and Loving Spirit Board member, Carolyn Cody, was instrumental in making these events happen in the Coachella Valley region of California. We are deeply grateful to Cody and to all the donors who supported these initiatives.”

Loving Spirit is a 501(c) 3 that was established in Estes Park in 2015. It is dedicated to transforming the journey of loss by changing the way we think about, prepare for and respond to grief and loss issues.

One participant who attended the workshop described it as follows: “The

workshop helped me in many ways: it dramatically helped me delineate my “real” loss; it put my loss in perspective (what exactly is it that I lost, and what do I still have); it helped me understand my current emotions and where those emotions place me on the spectrum of unconscious to conscious behavior; it gave me tools to elevate myself from grief and anger to conscious acceptance, and beyond to joy; and Rosemary Sloan, Chair of most imthe Board of Loving Spirit portantly, speaking at the workshop it awakheld in Rancho Mirage, Caliened in fornia. me a spirit that had been buried under the debris of apathy, grief, fear, anger, and pride. Additionally, Dayle E. Spencer, author of Loving Spirit, and Loving Allie, led the workshop.

Architect Returns To School He Helped Design Architect Jeff Winston of MIG is returning to Eagle Rock School & Professional Development Center to co-instruct an architecture class to Eagle Rock students. Winston was part of the original team of architects who designed Eagle Rock in the early 90s.

Duck Race Prize Forms Mailed The hunt is on for prizes for this year’s Estes Park Duck Race. Letters have been mailed to hundreds of Estes Valley merchants asking for donations of prizes for the 29th annual Estes Park Duck Race to be held Saturday, May 6th.

Last year merchants donated hundreds of prizes to the duck race. “We simply could not put on the duck race each year without the wonderful support of our business community,” said Big Duck Gregg Jurgens. “Each year we ask them to step up to the plate and every year we are amazed at their generosity.

To donate prizes this year, merchants are being asked to complete the Prize Donation Form they receive in the mail and return it as soon as possible to Duck Central at P.O. Box 1226, Estes Park, CO 80517.

Donors have a great incentive to get those Prize Donation Forms returned early. Beginning with the April 7 issue, the Estes Park News has donated a full page dedicated to the duck race. This page will appear in five issues ending on

May 5 and will feature prize donor names. When and how often a donor’s name is published depends on when the donor’s Prize Donation Form is received at Duck Central. For a donor’s name to appear in all six issues, Duck Central must receive the form by March 30.

Our business people know that one good way to generate foot traffic to their business is by being a participant in the largest general charitable fundraising event in the Estes Valley – one that benefits community and charity organizations. Gift certificates drive people to our stores and that benefits the local economy.

Organizations aim for 7,000 adoptions Representatives of the charities have collected their adoption forms, posters are going up, and buttons are appearing everywhere, so it’s time to sell, sell, sell.

The 2017 Estes Park Rotary Duck Race sales campaign has officially begun.

The 29th Annual Estes Park Rotary Duck Race on Saturday, May 6 will include music, family activities, food, a 5K and fun run, and the all-important drop of thousands of yellow plastic ducks that race down the Fall River.

The process is simple: adopt a duck online for $21 at epduckrace.org or https://www.facebook.com/EPDuckRace or for $20 from a representative of any of the 68 charities and groups that are asking for support. Charities will receive $19 of every adoption form they sell in the largest fundraiser in the Estes Valley.

“We had a great turnout at Distribution Night, and our charities have launched sales for the 2017 Estes Park Rotary Duck Race,” Gregg ‘Big Duck’ Jurgens said. “It’s always a great event because the energy of the organizations propels our ducks to the finish line.”

As part of the March 2 kick-off for charities, Mayor Todd Jirsa bought the first adoption form of the 2017 race. Within minutes, online sales launched.

Beneficiaries may turn in batches of sold adoption forms and cash on Thursdays, March 30, April 6, April 13, April 20 and April 27 between noon and 5 p.m.

Introduction To Centering Prayer Workshop

On Saturday, March 11, 2017, St. Bartholomew’s Center for Spirituality will offer an Introduction to Centering Prayer Workshop. St. Bartholomew’s Episcopal Church is located at 880 MacGregor Avenue, Estes Park, Colorado.

The workshop, facilitated by Cynthia Johnson and Steve Romano, will begin at 9:00 a.m. and end at 1:00 p.m. Hot and cold drinks and brunch foods will be provided. The Workshop will introduce the basics of Centering Prayer, also called the Prayer of Silence, an ancient discipline of meditation from a Christian perspective. During the prayer, you practice letting go of your habitual, racing thoughts and open your mind, heart and being to God, who is beyond thoughts and words. For the twenty minutes of Centering Prayer, you embody the scripture from Psalm 46:10, “Be still and know that I am God.”

You might ask, “Why would I want to spend most of a precious Saturday sitting in a church learning how to be in silence, essentially doing nothing? Isn’t it somewhat un-American not to be thinking continually and not be productive every minute of the day?” This Centering Prayer or the Prayer of Silence is very counter-cultural. I read an article once suggesting you could, while stopped on the road for a traffic jam or road construction, use those five or ten minutes to clean out your car’s glove compartment.

I wanted to shout out loud to the article, “Give me a break! Can’t I just sit for a few minutes, doing nothing?” It does seem strange to us, especially at first, to sit quietly for twenty minutes at a time, gently letting go of thoughts that come into our heads, over and over again.

When the twenty minutes are over, you don’t feel like you have accomplished anything, because you haven’t. The only thing you actually do is, “Show up for the date,” as Fr. Thomas Keating says. It sounds simple, this quieting the mind thing, but it’s not easy to do at all. That’s why there are Introduction to Centering

Combined EPHS And Village Band Concert

Following the example of the adult and high-school student jazz bands that combined forces for a concert on Wednesday last week, the EPHS Concert Band and the Village Band will be presenting a combined concert on Wednesday night this week. This free concert will be given on March 15, at 7:00 p.m., also at the EPHS auditorium. Each band will play a few favorite selections separately before they ultimately combine forces. The band leaders have employed some of the adult musicians’ exceptionally versatile skills to fill out the needed instrumentation for this concert. Now they are ready and eager to invite the public to come and enjoy an evening of exciting music.

For the EPHS Band’s opening number, Sheridan Monroe, Estes Park Schools Director of Bands, has chosen Encanto by Robert W. Smith. Once these fine young musicians have “enchanted” their fans, they will entice them into exploring The Cave of Fear by Michael Markowski. This composer took his theme from Joseph Campbell’s quote, ”The cave you fear to enter holds the treasure you seek. ” In addition to employing other non-traditional approaches to percussion instruments, the percussionist have found a way to represent the lion’s roar in this cave. By contrast, in Swearingen’s The Last Rose of Summer, senior trumpet soloist Luke Soguero, will charm and soothe all remaining fears. Then, demonstrating the influence these two bands have on each other, the students will conclude with Claude Smith’s powerful arrangement of God or our Fathers, the same arrangement that the Village Band played at its Christmas concert. The high-school students’ performance will highlight Arden Thompson, flute soloist, Kathryn Carnell, piccolo soloist, and both the high and low brass sections.

In memory of a former member of the low brass section in the Village Band, Loren Johnson will open its portion of the concert with the march from the movie classic, “The Great Escape.” Too bad Paul Saunders, the tuba player who left money to buy this carefree little march, cannot still be here to play and enjoy it. Then the emotional excitement resumes with Danse Bacchanale, from Camille Saint Saens’ opera, Samson and Delilah. Beginning with a fast, rhythmic, staccato phrase played quietly by the flutes, this orgiastic bacchanale builds to an overwhelming climax involving all

The Rite of Installation of Reverend Jonathan Glenn Schultz was celebrated at Mount Calvary Lutheran Church, Estes Park, Colorado on Sunday, February 12, 2017.

Attending the service were his wife Amy, their children (Joshua, Isaac, Samuel and Rachel), his parents Glenn and Connie Schultz, Amy’s parents Glenn and Vicky Van Velson, Amy’s aunt and uncle, along with the members of Mount Calvary and many other guests and visitors.

Involved in the service were thirteen pastors including Rocky Mountain District President Allen Anderson (Officiant), Reverend Mark Nierman (Liturgist Circuit Visitor), Reverend Bob Paulson (Lector – vacancy pastor Mount Calvary, Estes Park), Pastors Keith Besel (Mount Calvary, Fort Morgan), Timothy Storck (Trinity, Fort Morgan), Glen Schlecht (Immanuel, Loveland), Glenn Schultz (Jonathan’s father, Rapid City, SD), Henry Rische (retired – Mount Calvary, Estes Park), Clare Skov (Woodland Park), Brandon Ross (Faith, Johnstown), David Magruder (Peace with Christ, Fort Collins), Al Schroeder (Immanuel, Loveland) and Daniel Praeuner (Zion, Pine

A celebration dinner followed the service with time for meeting Pastor Schultz, Amy, Joshua, Isaac, Samuel, Rachel and their families. It was a great time for fellowship with all the pastors, members, and visitors.

Pastor Jonathan Schultz was born in McCook, NE and earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Concordia University in Seward, NE where he also met his wife Amy. The two were married on July 23, 2005 in North Platte, NE. Jonathan attended Concordia Seminary in St. Louis, MO, completed his vicarage in 2007 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Baton Rouge, LA. In 2008, Jonathan graduated from Concordia Seminary and was placed in his first Call to the dual parish of Our Savior Lutheran Church in Vernal, UT and Trinity Lutheran Church in Rangely, CO. Pastor Schultz has served as Rocky Mountain LWML District Counselor and as the Circuit Visitor for the Western Circuit.

The Holy Spirit leads us and we rejoice in our Lord Jesus Christ.

Thoughts Regarding Proposition 106 To The Editor: I have just sent the following letter to the Board of Directors of the Estes Park Medical Center: I am very happy to read that the Park Hospital Board of Directors is considering changing their decision to opt out of the Proposition 106 provisions. I myself worked hard [in very small ways] to help pass that proposition. I love our Hospital; my late husband and I have benefitted a number of times from the excellent facilities and the excellent staff there, and if any situation prevented me from dying comfortably at home, I would feel privileged to be in the Hospital, assured of

minimal suffering. If I were by that time a resident of Prospect Park, of course I would feel even more strongly that way.

As a Christian I certainly believe that in the end all is in God's hands, but I also know that the Lord has given us freedom of choice and does not require us to use the ultimate machines of modern medicine to prolong our suffering unnecessarily. I do hope you will vote to end EPMC's opt-out. (And my household and close relatives all know and approve of my feelings in this matter).

Healing Waters Foundation Extend Thanks To Anne Slack The Healing Waters Foundation announces the resignation of Anne Slack as the President of the Board of Directors.

Anne Slack, founder and Executive Director for many years, has decided to turn the pool over to a new Board and Executive Director. In May of 2016, Anne assigned the role of Executive Director to Ms. Sorensen, but remained the President of the Board of Directors. She has taken the board through a transition, and is now stepping aside to give more of her time to her successful physical therapy business, Mountaintop Physical Therapy.

Healing Waters Aquatic Center has been Ms Slacks’s heartfelt project to bring a unique option of exercise and rehabilitation to the Estes Park community. This vision of a warm water pool for Estes Park was born after Anne experienced the progress made while treating Dr. Follender who suffered a traumatic brain injury. The pool was built in memory of him and his journey. Ms. Slack had traveled to Utah with Dr. Follender for treatment in a warm water pool. After seeing what this therapy had to offer, she decided it was needed for her practice and the community of Estes Park. Ms. Slack and Mrs. Nancy Follendar began the groundwork of setting up a nonprofit foundation in 2003 in order to build a state-of-the-art pool. The Healing Waters Aquatic Center opened in 2008 and is available to the public for exercise as well as physical therapy.

Warm water therapy/exercise has become very popular with senior citizens, as well as elite and amateur athletes. The viscosity (resistance) of the water, and the warmer temperature of the water, offers gentle, yet powerful movement, not achievable on land. The underwater treadmill is a unique feature because it offers exercise options for everyone. Under water cameras allow the user to monitor form and treat brain injury from trauma or stroke. The swim jets provide

the opportunity to swim continuously, increase the resistance when walking or running on the treadmill, or they can be used as massage jets. The pool offers privacy and because of the hydraulic chair lift and stairs with railings, it is accessible to everyone.

It is with deep appreciation that we thank Anne Slack and her husband, Gordon, for countless hours of dedication to the success of Healing Waters Pool. The pool's continued success is due to the wonderful support of a dynamic Board of Directors, staff and volunteers that create a warm, friendly environment, and amazing donors. Healing Waters Aquatic Center is an extremely effective place to prepare for, or recover from surgery, rehabilitate after an injury, lose weight, and gain strength for many of our Estes Valley community members. We have seen many clients and patients come from the Front Range as well. Our community has a unique opportunity for increased wellness because of the hard work done by all involved with Healing Waters.

We, also wish to welcome our new President of the Board of Directors, David Caldera. Richard Simpson Richard Dean Simpson was born on January 27, 1935 in Portis, Kansas to John Franklin and Eleanor Isabell (Neeper) Simpson. He passed away on March 6, 2017 in Laramie, Wyoming.

He grew up on a farm near Portis during the Dust Bowl Era where his favorite pastimes were riding his bike as well as playing with his faithful dog, Brownie. Richard’s parents taught him to be industrious and resourceful; qualities that served him well throughout his life.

Richard was a member of the Methodist church from when he was seven days old and had the certificate to prove it. He attended Twelve Mile School, Barefoot Nation School and Portis High School. He earned an elementary teacher certificate at Fort Hays Kansas State College and taught elementary school in Downs, Kansas for a year before finishing his Bachelor of Arts degree in English at Hays. While at Hays, Richard met Eleanor (Burg) Lawton at a Methodist student activity and they dated for three months before marrying on May 29, 1957, in the Methodist Church. In one day, Richard received his Bachelor degree, got married, and adopted Eleanor’s daughter, Lorraine. In 1963, he completed a Master of Arts degree from Colorado State College. Richard and Eleanor raised their family in Wamego, Kansas for a number of years, where he was an award-winning art teacher at Wamego High School until his retirement. He taught his students about life as well as art, telling them that obstacles are sim-

ply opportunities to learn something. He taught for 41 years and 31 of those years at Wamego. He started the art program for Wamego School in 1965.

Richard had a love of music and he played the piano and organ.

He is preceded in death by his parents, grandparents, halfbrother, Elmo Allredge, daughter-in-law, Sherri Simpson, grandson, Caleb Robinson, and great-grandson, Jackson Forsythe.

Richard is survived by his wife, Eleanor of the home; his daughter, Lorraine Van Zee and husband, Calvin of Laramie, WY. Daughter, Teri Robinson and husband, James of Coffeyville, Kansas; his son, Gery Simpson of Laramie, WY; his six grandchildren, Abby Howe and husband Brian, Sara Forsythe and husband, Joshua, Renee Tahja and husband Lee, Luke Robinson and wife, Christine, Benjamin Robinson, and Lucinda Van Zee; and four great-grandsons, Tayte and Levi Tahja, Eli Forsythe, and Rayland Callahan.

Mr. Lias brings a fresh perspective on nature and national parks by thinking about the kinds of questions few visitors would entertain. What happens when the wildness of trail, river, and mountain intrude on the velvet seats and hushed silences of the concert hall? What does a sunrise sound like? How can violins express the movement of Caribou?

This engaging multimedia presentation will explore the many ways that adventure, scenery, fear, history, wildlife and geology can be translated into music. You will hear audio and video excerpts from many pieces both by Lias and others, and you will learn how the worlds of Steinway and Gore-Tex go together like fine coffee and a mountain sunrise.

Mr. Lias of Nacogdoches, Texas, is passionate about national parks. He has served as Composer-in-Residence for Rocky Mountain, Glacier Bay, Denali, Glacier, and Gates of the Arctic National Parks. His compositions have been performed in such far-flung places as Australia, Taiwan, Russia, Venezuela, Alaska, Texas and Colorado, and at Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall. As a teacher, Dr. Lias strives to lead his composition students to genuine and artistic musical expression, while incorporating a strong emphasis on contemporary media and cross-disciplinary collaboration. His students have scored films, been commissioned, and published, and are the recipients of regional and national awards.

John Wisneski Dec. 24, 1988-March 1, 2017 At 4:29 p.m. on Wednesday March 1, 2017, John Joseph Wisneski breathed his last breath on this earth. He now rests in heaven with the Lord.

John was born on Christmas Eve to Mike and Linda Wisneski. John was the second born son and contrary to his older brother Dylan, John liked to sleep. As John grew he looked up to his older brother and loved playing with him. Soon John became a big brother, too, when Kimberly was born and later again when Frank was born.

John would soothe Kimberly by putting his finger in her mouth to suck on and pat her little head. He was entranced with her. He loved Frank and became a great buddy to him. Oh the adventures those two had! Whatever Dylan did John wanted to do as well. When Dylan began riding a dirt bike, John had to as well. That was the beginning of Wisneski Racing. John loved his motorcycling days. While he enjoyed motocross he really excelled at flat track. Being a football enthusiast in a home where the Chicago Bears ruled, he naturally became a Green Bay Packers fan. Anyone who knew John knew he was a Packers fan! He had the trip of a lifetime when he toured Lambeau Field in the summer of 2015. John also loved the outdoors whether he was playing golf, tossing the football around, mowing lawns, or even shoveling snow. Life on his tractor was good. He was involved with the Pinewood Springs Fire Protection District for many years and truly enjoyed keeping the station and trucks clean. John also had a natural affinity

A memorial service to celebrate his life will be held on Saturday, March 11 at 11 a.m. at the Presbyterian Community Church of the Rockies.

Most of all he leaves a huge hole in the life of his family.

John was preceded in death by his uncle Richard Wisneski, grandfather John Barker, grandfather Frank Wisneski, grandmother Jeanne Schultz, and great-aunt Deanne Donnelly.

Bill Grove Colorado native Bill Grove died while spending the winter at his home in Green Valley, AZ. He was 84 years old.

William F. Grove, Jr. was born June 14, 1932 in Milliken, CO. His parents were William and Joyce (Mellon) Grove. Bill attended schools on the Front Range of Colorado including receiving a Master's Degree from the University of Northern Colorado in Greeley. He was a 1951 graduate of Estes Park High School. He served his country in the United States Navy stationed in Texas.

He married Beverly Carl in Greeley on December l9, 1954. He taught in the Denver Public School system for 30 years. On August 8, 1988 he married Lucinda Swearingen in Estes Park, CO. Bill is survived by his wife Lucinda, sons Randall of Nampa, Idaho and

Kendall of Bailey, CO, daughter Pamela of Denver, sister Nancy Bond of Highlands Ranch, CO, grandchildren Katie Roth, Zachary Roth, Rachel Grove and Ryan Grove and two great grandchildren, He also leaves behind Lucinda's children Nicholas Thomas of Amsterdam and Terence Thomas of Volcano, Hawaii and his children Rain, Kupa'a, Nanea, and Kauila.

Dawn Rasmussen-Myhre Estes Park resident Dawn RasmussenMyhre died at her home Thursday, March 2, 2017.

She was 62 years old.

Dawn Rasmussen was born December 29, 1954 in Minneapolis, MN. Her parents were Orville and Ardyce (Nielsen) Rasmussen. Dawn received a degree in Children’s Special Education.

She worked at various jobs including Bachman’s Flowers in Minneapolis for 18 years. On November 8, 1986 she married Paul Myhre in Minneapolis.

The couple moved to Estes Park in 2009 and Dawn worked at DeLeo’s Deli, Main Street T’s and Park Theater.

She enjoyed reading, solving puzzles and visiting Rocky Mountain National Park.

Paul of Estes Park, a daughter Sara Myhre and husband Anthony Rushing of West Bend, WI, grandchildren Izabelle and Jaxson Rushing, niece Rebecca Larson, nephew Danny Rasmussen and a sister in law Linda Woolie of Bemidji, MN. She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother David Rasmussen.

John Andrew Cannon

John Andrew Cannon, 39, the organist and choir director at Christ Episcopal Church, died in the early morning hours of Friday, Feb. 10, after a massive heart attack while visiting his brother in Charlottesville, VA. An autopsy found the heart attack was caused by undiagnosed atherosclerosis.

Born at Huntsville Hospital in Alabama on Jan. 3, 1978, John grew up in Scottsboro until age 15. He loved playing sports: baseball and basketball, tennis and golf, among others. Sidelined after breaking his arm in third grade, he redirected his energies to learning to play the organ.

After attending Scottsboro City Schools, John completed high school at Loomis Chaffee boarding school in Windsor, Conn., where he studied organ under Francis Angelo, a pupil of world-renowned organists Marcel Dupre and Clarence Waters. John received the junior and senior prizes in music.

John earned a B.A. in 2000 and a master’s degree in 2003, both in music performance, from Colorado State University in Fort Collins, Colo., where he studied under Dr. Peggy Johnson and Dr. Robert Cavarra, who became a lifelong mentor. He was inducted into the Golden Key International Honor Society award in 2000 in recognition of outstanding scholastic achievement and excellence.

From 2003 to 2007, John was assistant university organist for the University of the South in Sewanee, Tenn., under university organist Robert Delcamp. He accompanied the University Choir for

CD recording tours in England, to Wells Cathedral in 2005, and York Minster in 2007, resulting in the CDs “O Lord, Open thou our lips” and “Choral Evensong from York Minster.”

In spring 2006, John worked under internationally acclaimed organist and composer David Briggs while Delcamp was on sabbatical. John later premiered an original Briggs composition based on the hymn tune “Lobe den Herren, o meine Seele” at the Cathedral of St. John in Jacksonville, Fla., in 2010.

John returned to Fort Collins, and from there he traveled across the country and the world giving organ recitals while serving as organist and music director at Saint Bartholomew’s Episcopal Church in Estes Park. For the past two years, he was organist and choir director at Christ Episcopal Church in Cooperstown.

He gave recitals in grand cathedrals like St. John the Divine in New York City, Washington National Cathedral, St. Paul’s in London, St. Philip in Atlanta, Grace Cathedral in San Francisco and the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels in Los Angeles. His last concert was in November at St. Patrick’s Cathedral in New York City.

In 2009, John competed in the Luxembourg-based competition “Organs without Borders,”; he was semifinalist at the Rodgers Organ Competition in Phoenix in 2011.

John is survived by his parents, Henry Brevoort Cannon III and Kathleen Johnsen Cannon, and brother Henry B. (Brevy) Cannon IV. Funeral services were held at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church in Scottsboro Saturday, March 4.
