Town Board Approves Business License Fee Reduction And Jan. 31 Renewal Deadline At its Nov. 12 regular meeting, the Town Board approved a reduction in Business License fees to $50 for general, building contractor and home licenses for the 2020 calendar year. The fee for Accommodations was reduced to $50 for up to 5 units, $100 for 6-20 units and $150 for 21 or more units.

Ordinance 29-19 updated the renewal deadline to Jan. 31 annually and established a $200 penalty fee for businesses that do not renew by the deadline. Fee structures remain unchanged for vacation home registrations, bed and breakfast, and mobile food vendors.

Renewal notices were emailed to all businesses the week of Dec. 16. Renewals must be postmarked by Jan. 31, 2020. Vacation homes that do not renew by the new deadline shall forfeit their registration and are subject to reapplication and the residential cap if applicable.

Licensed businesses and registered vacation homes and bed and breakfasts that do not receive a renewal statement by Dec. 31, 2019 should contact the Town Clerk's office at 970577-4777 or townclerk@estes.org.

The Season Of Giving As I began thinking of article topics related to the holiday season, the first thing that came to mind was my gratitude to be living in such an incredibly generous and involved community. So many people in Estes Park give freely of their time, talents and treasures -and our valley is a better place for it.

I recently completed a term on the Estes Park Nonprofit Resource Center Board of Directors. One of the lasting impressions I have from working with this group is how critical the 70-plus nonprofit organizations in our valley are to the health of our community, and how much these groups rely on the generosity of their volunteers and benefactors. These organizations provide services and support that aren’t available anywhere else. They feed the heart and soul of our community with everything from arts, education and history, to the environment, health, recreation and essential human services. They are there when we need them and they could not do any of this without the help of the volunteers that sustain them.

Some residents contribute substantial financial gifts that allow our local nonprofits to keep the doors open, lights on, and programs humming. Their generosity is absolutely essential for organizations to deliver services and programming. That being said, many of the most charitable people that I have come across in my personal and professional life are not in a position

to give financially, so they pledge something just as valuable -- their time and talents.

Some nonprofits operate with a full staff, but many have just one or two people on staff (if that!). But no matter their size, they all need volunteers to help with everything from finding grants and other resources, to serving as board members, to fulfilling specific operational and programming needs.

As 2019 comes to an end, it is a great time to consider supporting one of Estes Park’s nonprofits. This could be through a financial donation, a donation of your time and talents, or a combination of both. Identifying volunteer opportunities has never been easier with the new clearinghouse located at www.estesvolunteers.org.

Commitments can range from onetime event assistance to ongoing work as a board member. Organizations are adding opportunities regularly, so anyone seeking a new volunteer opportunity should keep an eye out for something that matches their interest and availability.

As we count our blessings this holiday season and look ahead to the New Year, it’s the perfect time to reach out to help others. At the Town, we look forward to working alongside you in 2020. Wishing you and yours a happy holiday season!

Town Prepares For April 7 Municipal Election; Candidate Forum Scheduled Jan. 7 The Town of Estes Park will hold the next regular Municipal Election on Tuesday, April 7, 2020 as a mail ballotonly election for the mayor and three trustee seats on the Board of Trustees.

Voters will determine who will occupy seats currently held by Mayor Todd Jirsa, Mayor Pro Tem Ron Norris and Trustees Eric Blackhurst and Patrick Martchink. Mayor Pro Tem Norris is term-limited as a trustee. Mayor Jirsa and Trustees Blackhurst and Martchink are eligible to run for an additional four-year term in their current seats.

For individuals who are interested in learning more about becoming a candidate, the Town Clerk will offer a candidate information forum on Jan. 7, 2020 at 6 p.m. in the Town Board Room of Town Hall, at 170 MacGregor Ave. This forum will include a review of the candidate packet, including candidate eligibility, nomination instructions, the nomination petition, Fair Campaign Practices Act instructions, expectations of time commitment and the role of a Board member.

Registered electors 18 years of age or older may be a candidate and hold office if they have resided inside Town limits for at least 12 consecutive months immediately preceding April 7, 2020. Candidate packets will be available at the Town Clerk’s office, Room 130 of Town Hall on or after Jan. 7, 2020 and nomination petitions may be circulated beginning the same day. The petition must be signed by at least 10 registered electors who reside inside Town limits. The filing deadline for

nomination petitions is Jan. 27, 2020 at 5 p.m.

Additional important dates: Jan. 8: Applications available at the Town Clerk’s office for Absent Voter/Mail Ballot Address Change – for voters who will be out of town and need a mail ballot forwarded to a different address.

Feb. 3: Last day to file a Write-In Candidate Affidavit Feb. 4: Last day for a candidate to withdraw from the election Feb. 22: Ballots mailed to voters registered as an active military or overseas voter March 16 – March 23: – Ballots mailed to all registered voters March 16: Last day for eligible electors to establish residency in the State of Colorado. EVFPD firefighters generally respond to medical calls in their personal vehicles, allowing for a faster response. On other incidents, firefighters respond to a fire station to respond in department apparatus with specialized equipment.

On Sunday, December 22, Estes Valley Fire responded to a wildland fire north of Highway 34 between MM 6869. The fire was named the Hidden Park Fire.

At 1:05 p.m. the Hidden Park Fire was declared 100% contained. The fire was burning on US Forest Land.

EVFPD was command with mutual

aid from: Loveland Glen Haven Pinewood Allenspark LCSO No structures were threatened and the cause is still under investigation.

The fire was approximately one acre in size.

At 3:40 p.m. the scene was turned over to the US Forest Service.

Tackling "Wicked Problems" In The Estes Community Deliberative Engagement & Facilitator Training Workshop In 2018, collaborative conflict resolution and civil discourse programming

by Estes Valley Restorative Justice Partnership (EVRJP), Estes Valley Library and League of Women Voters led to the identification of a need for public deliberation and facilitated community conversations in the Estes Valley. Following is an article about the continued partnership between the Estes Valley Library and EVRJP, and the launch of a new program to meet this need. Estes Valley Restorative Justice Partnership (EVRJP) and Estes Valley Library will embark on a collaborative endeavor to elevate the quality of civil discourse in the Estes Valley. A threeday workshop on Jan. 15-17, 2020, will focus on building local capacity to engage with difficult issues more collaboratively and productively through the use of deliberative processes. Deliberative engagement helps transform conversations beyond a collection of individual opinions into collaborative, community- focused learning, sparked by the process of interactive, often facilitated, small group discussions.

The workshop opening session will examine the concept of “wicked problems” as a framework to better understand difficult issues. From there, participants will review recent research on social psychology, exploring why traditional engagement processes are often counterproductive to supporting the high quality communication democracy requires. The workshop then builds on these foundations with modules focused on the various components of deliberative engagement, uti-

lizing a mix of presentation, discussion, and small group exercises.

The workshop will be led by Martin Carcasson, Ph.D., professor of Communication Studies at Colorado State University, the founder and director of the CSU Center for Public Deliberation (CPD) (www.cpd.colostate.edu),and the current chair of the National Coalition for Dialogue and Deliberation Board of Directors (www.ncdd.org).

In 2018, the library brought Dr. Martin Carcasson of Colorado State University’s Center for Public Deliberation to present to the community on “Tackling Wicked Problems.” Because interest and attendance was so high, the Library brought Martin back last February to begin putting these principles into action. Drawing on the Library’s strengths of political neutrality and meaningful programs with wide community appeal, and EVRJP’s skills in neutral facilitation, the organizations began to pursue the goal of becoming trained in and offering a deliberative model of engagement to better enable productive community conversations. EVRJP and the library are honored to bring Martin back to Estes to train community members in facilitation of these processes.

This training is hosted by Estes Valley Restorative Justice Partnership and is open to the public. Anyone interested in becoming trained to facilitate these conversations in the Estes Valley community is encouraged to attend. In order to offset the cost of the training, EVRJP asks that those who attend commit to facilitating future deliberative Community Conversations through volunteering with EVRJP. Estes Park Christmas Bird Count Slated For Saturday, January 4th 2020 Photos by Scott Rashid

Male Red Crossbill The annual Estes Park and RMNP Christmas Bird Count will be held Saturday, January 4th, 2020. Any interested participant can meet at the Estes Park Visitors Center at 8:00 a.m. January 4th.

Interested individuals can begin counting at 12:01 a.m., on the morning of the 16th and continue counting until 12:00 p.m., that evening. Most of you won’t do that, but it is available to do so.

You can also keep track of any unusual species seen during, the count week. The count week consists of three days before and three days after the count day.

We are also looking for feeder counters.

If you have bird feeders at your home, count those birds too, again trying not to

count the same bird twice.

All participants will meet at the Estes Park Visitor’s Center, on Highway 34, at 8:00 a.m. We will then split into small groups and move to designated locations and begin counting every individual bird that is seen, and/or hear, trying not to count the same bird twice.

Some of the species that are seen on this count include Steller’s Jays, Blackbilled Magpies, American Robins, Mountain and Black-capped Chickadees, all three nuthatches, Red-tailed Hawks, Cooper’s Hawks, Mallards and Canada Geese, rosy-finches, American Dippers, and Bald Eagles.

Dr. Aaron Florence Conferred With Degree Of Fellow From AOAO Recently, Aaron Florence, D.O., F.A.O.A.O. was conferred the distinguished Degree of Fellow from the American Osteopathic Academy of Orthopedics. Members of the Academy earn the title of “Fellow of the American Osteopathic Academy of Orthopedics” who provide outstanding achievements and contributions to the healing art, to the practice of Orthopedic Sur-

Orthopedic surgeons considered for this degree are recognized for their experience in leadership positions within the Academy as well as other member organizations. They are also recognized for their published research and for their role in osteopathic orthopedic education. It was required that Dr. Florence be nominated by an existing fellow to be awarded this degree. Both national and local activities and initiatives are a prerequisite.

Nationally, Dr. Florence was an Examiner for the Oral Boards of the American Osteopathic Board of Orthopedic Surgery. He was also privileged to be selected to serve with a hand-picked, national group of 25 Orthopedic Sports Medicine Surgeons to develop and write a new national sports medicine examination that is now a required examination for Orthopedic Surgeons to become Board Certified in Sports Medicine. Dr. Florence has also been a panel specialist for the U.S. Trail Running Conference multiple times.

Locally, Dr. Florence has worked with hundreds of Estes Park high school athletes and coaches by starting an injury prevention course in 2011 and providing home game sideline coverage for the football team. In 2014, he also started the Estes Park Medical Center Sports Medicine Academy, and helped to start the Estes Park High School Sports Medicine class and continues to teach students regularly as a guest lecturer. For Estes Park Health, he has

Dr. Florence started the Orthopedic Service Line at Estes Park Medical Center in 2010 and provides general orthopedic care and surgery for hips, knees, and shoulders—including total joint replacements and fracture care at Estes Park Health. In addition to training in New York City with team physicians of multiple professional sports teams, his extensive training in Sports Medicine at the Lake Tahoe program prepared Dr. Florence to perform minimally invasive specialized surgeries such as hip arthroscopy, rotator cuff repair and ACL reconstruction in both the young and older injured athlete. “The most important thing I can do for my patients is help them get back to doing the active things that make them happy and make the journey there as comfortable as possible,” Dr. Florence says. Dr. Florence has two Board Certifications, one in Orthopedic Surgery and another in Orthopedic Sports Medicine, which is rare for an Orthopedic Surgeon. After working at 16 different hospitals and surgery centers in five different states, Dr. Florence is pleased to base his expertise, practice and all surgical activities under one roof at Estes Park Health. Dr. Florence, who has been a resident of Estes Park for nearly 10 years, spends his free time with his wife and five children. “We enjoy indoor and outdoor activities that strengthen our minds, bodies, spirits, and family relationships,” he says. His favorite activities are downhill skiing, mountain biking, basketball, hunting, fishing, hiking and carpentry.

Trees must be dropped during the specified hours in the identified area. route, scanning the roads and curbs, stopping to spotlight anything that could possibly be a segment of broken plate.

Nope. Nought. Nada. That was three days ago. I continue to scan the streets when I drive that same route. How could the plate have simply disappeared? Is there any possible way it could have remained intact so it could roll away on its edge? Did someone find it and sweep it up? Will I spot it months from now, a glint of light catching my eye while sitting at a stop sign? This car-roof-as-shelf mistake is not an uncommon oversight. When I told my plate story at a caroling party, several people had similar tales to tell, the worst being a company-issued iPad that Bob drove over after it fell off his car, and then several others drove over it as well. Back in the ’80s, I left a garment bag on top of a friend’s car as we loaded up for a three-hour drive from Des Moines to Lincoln. Someone found it and called the number on the luggage tag.

When I got back to Des Moines I picked it up from the kind person who retrieved it, but when I got it home I discovered she’d worn several of my shirts. Ick. In the case of the cookie plate, it wouldn’t be so bad except that the plate was a gift to my affiliate, Joe, almost 40 years ago. It was handpainted by a member of the church choir he directed in the early ’80s so it not only held cookies, this one-of-a-kind, handcrafted plate held lots of fond memories for Joe. I felt terrible when I had to tell him his lovely plate had disappeared. (He was sad but he wasn’t mad. When I lamented at length the next day, he encouraged me to let it go.) The moral of this story is that the roof of an automobile is not a shelf and should never be used as one. No matter how much you say to yourself “don’t forget this” as you place something there, you’ll likely forget it. Set your coffee mug/phone/purse/lunch/cookie plate on the hood of the car instead. Problem solved. If anyone finds my stowaway plate, in one piece (not likely) or in countless slivers, please let me know and I’ll come get it from you. You can keep the cookies.

My arms were full of sundry gubbins (that’s a fun word for stuff) when I headed to the car: a wrapped package for an ornament exchange, several grocery bags to go in the trunk, a couple of CDs, a plate of cookies, a cup of coffee. I could barely manage to hit the garage door opener button without spilling everything everywhere, but I’m proficient at pushing buttons with my elbow, so I got ‘er done.

Then, with my free pinky finger curled around the door handle, I managed to pull the car door open but I couldn’t maneuver myself into the driver’s seat with a plate of cookies and the CDs in one hand, a cup of coffee and a breakable ornament in the other, and—uh—where were my keys anyway? I set the cookies on the roof of the car, tossed the grocery bags into the back seat, gently placed the ornament in the passenger seat and then I went back inside to get my keys. They were in my pocket.

After I discovered that, I stood in the kitchen, hearing a small voice from deep in my cranial folds telling me I was forgetting something. But I looked around and no, I wasn’t forgetting anything. So I pulled the people-door shut, hopped into the car, and off I went to a holiday party. Half an hour later I parked the car, opened the door, and then reached over to get the wrapped gift and the plate of cookies. The plate of cookies. Where was the plate of cookies? Oh my gosh, the realization was instantaneous and directly responsible for immediate heart palpitations—I left the cookies on the roof of the car! Guess what I did next.

After driving 17 miles, much of it on the highway, I got out of the vehicle and looked to see if the plate of cookies was still on the roof of my car. It wasn’t. As I drove home a couple of hours later, I wondered where I would find the plate and what condition it would be in. Was it in shards on the floor of the garage? Did it fall off when I pulled out of the driveway?

Might it have rolled into the gutter, cookies held in place by plastic wrap? How many people have driven over it? What critters have feasted on the delicious nutmeg logs and frosted sugar cookies they found in the street and are the cookies any better than roadkill? But I got home and there was no plate. Not in the street, in the driveway, or in the garage. I took a flashlight and drove slowly along my earlier

1917 Book Club To Take Place January 22, 2020 On Wednesday, January 22, 2020, the 1917 Book Club hosted by the Estes Park Museum will explore local title, A Lady's Life in the Rocky Mountains by Isabella Bird. The book explores the travels of Englishwoman Isabella Bird. Light snacks will be provided. This program is free and open to the public. It is strongly encouraged that participants read each book prior to the program to take part in the discussion. No prior registration is required.

A Lady's Life in the Rocky Mountains chronicles the travels and adventures of Isabella Bird including her interactions with James "Rocky Mountain Jim" Nugent and her ascent of Longs Peak. Estes Park Health Foundation Board Updates: 2 Directors Retire and 3 Join After 8 years, Debby Hughes is retiring from Estes Park Health Foundation’s Board of Directors. Her commitment and insight have been invaluable in shaping the direction of the Foundation.

Jose Almeida is also retiring after six years on the Board. His guidance and

Recently, Crossroads Ministry has generously gifted a van to Mountain Top Preschool and Child Care to use for transportation. Four Colorado Power Providers To Join The California Western Energy Imbalance Market Study concludes move will save customers money, benefit the environment Four Colorado utilities announced today that they plan to join the Western Energy Imbalance Market (WEIM), operated by the California Independent System Operator (CAISO), to save customers money while allowing them to use more energy from wind and solar.

Xcel Energy, Black Hills Colorado Electric, Colorado Springs Utilities and Platte River Power Authority have different business models, customers and geography, but all share a commitment to leading the clean energy transition and believe the WEIM will provide the most benefit to their collective Colorado customers.

An energy imbalance market is a realtime market in which energy generation from multiple power providers is dispatched at the lowest possible cost to serve the combined customer demand of the region. Earlier this year the utilities commissioned The Brattle Group to study the WEIM and the Western Energy Imbalance Service (WEIS) proposed by the Southwest Power Pool (SPP).

The study concluded that as the larger of the two markets, the WEIM offers greater potential to lower production costs due to the size of its market footprint and the diverse resources available within the WEIM. The WEIM also offers lower administrative costs and participants of the WEIM are exploring adding day-ahead market services. Dayahead market services are designed to help utilities plan which resources they will use to generate energy, allowing more renewables to be integrated into the system.

Currently, Xcel Energy, Black Hills Colorado Electric and Platte River Power Authority share resources and balance demand for electricity through a joint dispatch agreement (JDA) that has reduced costs for customers. In March 2020, Colorado Springs Utilities will begin participation in this joint dispatch agreement. Joining the WEIM will allow the group to exchange energy with an even larger group of neighboring utilities and help integrate more clean energy into their systems.

“This decision is an important next step in our efforts to keep our customers’ bills low and provide more 100 percent carbon-free energy like wind and solar,” said Alice Jackson, president of Xcel Energy Colorado. “We are pleased to continue this regional collaboration of investor-owned utilities and public power agencies to benefit our customers, the environment and support the state of Colorado in achieving its clean energy goals.”

“By joining with our regional utility partners in this effort, we have the opportunity to create value for our customers,” said Vance Crocker, vice president of Black Hills Colorado Electric., doing business as Black Hills Energy.

“We’re very supportive of a plan that will lead to lower energy costs and more renewable energy options for our customers and communities.”

“We’ve created excellent partnerships though the JDA that currently provide great value to our owner communities,” said Jason Frisbie, general manager and CEO of Platte River Power Authority.

“Joining an EIM will expand the regional collaboration among all partners to the benefit of every Colorado customer we serve.”

"We are committed to offering our customers clean, more diverse and affordable energy," said Aram Benyamin, Colorado Springs Utilities CEO. "This regional partnership provides us the opportunity to integrate more renewable energy into our system at a lower cost.”

“The California ISO is pleased that Xcel Energy, Black Hills Energy, Colorado Springs Utilities and Platte River Authority have announced their intent to join the Western EIM,” said ISO President and CEO Steve Berberich. “The outstanding results the Western EIM has achieved over the last several years demonstrates the valuable benefits and cost savings we achieve when we work together to meet consumer needs in an evolving energy industry.”

Over the next few months, the group will be working with the ISO to finalize the implementation agreement and settle on a potential date to join the market, with a target of 2021.

IT’S THE SEASON FOR…PEACE? One of our most famous songs of the season is: “I heard the bells on Christmas Day” written by Henry W. Longfellow. One reason it is a favorite is because it promotes a ‘peace’ that is available to us. However, it is also one of the most relevant songs to be sung by us right now. You remember his words: “I heard the bells on Christmas Day. Their old familiar carols play. And wild and sweet the words repeat, of peace on earth, good will to men.” The song speaks of something so dear to our hearts, something that we all long to find and savor. However, it is so elusive.

That’s why it is encouraging to continue on in his song and sense that he is fully in touch with the kind of world that we live in. He writes: “In despair, I bowed my head: ‘There is no peace on earth,’ I said, ‘For hate is strong and mocks the song of peace on earth, good will to men.’” How we can relate to his sadness and hopelessness as he views the world of his day…and we view the world of ours.

“Peace on earth, good will to men?” we ask. Our daily papers and newscasts indicate just the opposite. We hear of nations against nations: Russia against Turkey; ISIS against most of the world; terrorists against France, the US, Switzerland, and Australia, and on and on it goes. Within our own nation we see the horrific deeds of individuals and groups that devastate and destroy the lives of so many. Add to that the evidence of anger and hatred seen in protests and other activities that often fill our streets and the hate-filled rhetoric that we hear from many sources. With all those influences impacting our lives no wonder that we have been dubbed the ‘tranquilizer generation’ as many turn to man-made things to find that ‘peace’ that all desire.

In the midst of all this turmoil the ‘good news’ is that which is proclaimed by the songwriter in his next verse: “Then pealed the bells more loud and deep, ‘God is not dead, not doth He sleep. The wrong shall fail, the right prevail, in peace on earth, good will to men.” This was the message that was shared by the angelic chorus long ago to the lowly shepherds, the message of ‘peace on earth, good will among men.”

And we witness that effect of Jesus in the world of His day and in ours. We see it happening as men think of his birth. Travis Tritt, an established country-western singer tells of the early days when he and his band would play in bars and honkytonks. He says that when fights would threaten, he and his band knew what to do, they would always begin to play ‘Silent Night’. He said that it rarely failed that the whole mood changed and ‘peace’ returned. We know such was seen also in 1914 during World War I when, on Christmas Day, soldiers from the English and German armies laid down their weapons, crossed ‘no man’s land’ and gave good wishes, hugs and souvenirs to one another, before returning to their trenches and the resumption of the battle the next day.

Besides the difference His birth made, consider the impact of the life of peace that He lived, the messages of peace that He shared, and the death that He died in order that all men could enjoy peace with God, peace within themselves, and with one another. “There is no peace on earth?” Of course there can be…because of Him. What’s New At The Art Center

Summer Swans by Doreen Vroman

“Meet the New Artists” opens on January 3. Continuing the introductions, let us present the two other artists in the upcoming exhibit. “My passion is in nature. I am in awe of our beautiful world and the creatures that inhabit it” shares Doreen Vroman. “I capture a stunning moment with my camera and add to it or subtract from it as I paint the scene.

My goal is to help people see the beauty that they often overlook while going about their busy lives.” Vroman grew up in Illinois and moved to Colorado in 2016. She switched from watercolor to acrylics and canvas in 2014. “I find endless inspiration in the beautiful scenery and abundant wildlife of Colorado. I keep challenging myself to grow as an artist by doing difficult subject matters

and learning from other artists.”

Sally Richmond is a native of Montreal, Quebec. She has been painting in both oils and watercolors in the US and Canada since the 1980s. After studying at Mount Allison University in New Brunswick and the School of Art Institute of Chicago, she graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in 1993. “I am fortunate to have lived in many beautiful places. I now maintain a studio in Estes Park, where I live with my family.

I am drawn to the shapes and spaces found in nature,” states Richmond. “I strive to try to capture the light and colors of what I see at different times of the day and during the seasons of the year. My work is influenced and representative of the Impressionist school. ”

The public is invited to meet these new artists and enjoy the variety of talent they offer.

Since this will also be on First Friday, a door prize will be offered for the public to sign up to win. You do not have to be present to win.

Also on display in the gallery will be the outstanding work of the other Art Center artist members, including other works in oil painting, watercolor, pastel, jewelry, ceramics, charcoal, graphite, glass, wood, sculpture, fiber, photography, printmaking and mixed media.

Christmas is over; Diwali long gone; Chanukah nearly complete; and we are midway through Yule. Shortly, it will be 2020, according to the accepted calendar of the United States. Whatever your chosen holiday, this is traditionally a time of renewal and resolution. We all set goals and make personal plans for the new year, but what about our goals, plans, or wishes for the public? If you had three such wishes, what would you choose?

In 2016, I saw a little girl at a rally carrying a sign that read, “Make America Kind Again.” This statement has since gone viral for a reason. As a democracy, this country was founded on a sense of true respect for differing viewpoints and the individuals who express them. Dating back some 30 years, there has been ever increasing "partyism" at all levels of government. A certain divisiveness has invaded the United States, reaching its tentacles throughout the country, even, once or twice, into the Estes Valley. As a nation, we must relearn how to disagree amicably. Differing opinions are a mainstay of democracy.

Each individual interprets each question from the angle of his or her own background, experience, and knowledge.

While differing viewpoints are healthy, we should always remember to be kind to one another: before, during, and after the discussion. So this would be my first wish for our county.

Among the lessons learned from the indigenous tribes inhabiting this land when the Europeans arrived was respect for the Earth. They valued the air, the water, the land, and the energy generated by them. The National Park system, among others, advocates, “Leave no trace.” I wish that all of us would apply this more universally, in our habits concerning energy use, depletion of resources, and forms of waste disposal. I

would wish that people, as a whole and as individuals, would recognize that “just this once” multiplied by the population, is a serious oversight; that energy is best developed from renewable sources and that conservation is preferable; that reduction is better than reusing, but reusing is better than recycling, which is better than throwing “out.” I wish that everyone, world wide, would comprehend that this universal problem is not going “away.” And that, while it takes every individual to preserve and protect the Earth and her resources, the action of one individual can derail that effort.

My third wish is a bit more complicated. Many eligible voters do not register. Many registered voters do not vote.

Many individuals do not even know they are eligible to vote in some cases (mostly district elections). Sixty percent is considered an excellent turnout. This leaves a lot of people who are allowing someone else to determine who rules the country. My parents always said, “If you do not participate, you cannot complain – because you voted by default with whatever the majority decided.”

The last mayoral election was decided by six votes. So my final wish is for citizens to participate.

Let us listen and consider all aspects of each vote. Let us each decide for ourselves what we prefer. Let us consider what is best for all, not just ourselves and our friends. Then let us provide our opinion by voting. Thereafter, let us accept the final decision, whether by a vote of the public or by our elected representatives.

So those are my three wishes. What are yours? There is no need for me to know them, but your knowledge of your choices provides a comprehensive plan for your public participation in the coming year.

Estes Valley Rec Center – The Cure for Holiday Cabin Fever!

Families love to come to Estes Park to visit their relatives for the holidays.

There’s something special about spending time together here in our winter wonderland! But once dinner is over and the presents are opened, it may be a little overwhelming with all those extra people in the house. The Webster Dictionary defines cabin fever as extreme irritability and restlessness from living in a confined indoor area for a prolonged time with symptoms that include climbing the walls, restlessness and temporary insanity. Who wants that? Bring the family to the Rec Center to share some quality active time together no matter what the weather.

Hayley Christian, Ph.D, is a Professor at the University of Australia’s School of Population Health. She has more than 18 years of experience of research in the field of turning challenges into opportunities to make a positive difference in people’s health. She commented, “It is important that we look at different ways to engage children, and get them more physically active, playing outdoors and away from devices. Consider Estes Park Pet Association For Year End Or Planned Donations

Dear friends of animals, The Estes Park Pet Assn is the only humane society providing services to Estes and our surrounding communities. We have been caring for and finding new homes for strays and surrendered animals here for almost half a century.

Chances are good that you and your neighbors have given homes to Pet Assn dogs, cats, and occasional other small animals.

Or maybe you have been in a situation that required you to rehome a beloved companion animal. We take in the community's animals when you and they need help.

We have re-homed many elderly pets whose caregivers have become unable. These older animals sometimes need medical attention, such as dental care, before we adopt them out. And all animals who come to us are boarded for a period of time while they receive a medical exam, vaccinations, and any necessary treatment, and

while we get to know them.

In the past year we have provided chemotherapy to three dogs who now have healthy lives in happy homes. We often help local rescue groups when they are overwhelmed with homeless animals.

We adopted out about a hundred dogs and cats in the last year.

Once we have "rescued" an animal, we are in it for the long haul.

For example, once we take in an animal, medical issues that show up are not deal breakers. We do whatever is necessary to get each animal healthy and socialized and ready for a new home.

Unfortunately, expenses have been up, and donations have been down. Please consider us, the Estes Park Pet Assn, when making year-end donations and planned gifts of any kind. Your contributions enable us to help the animals. We are funded entirely by donations.

One Book One Valley: Taking “Flight” This January Estes Valley readers have chosen Barbara Kingsolver’s novel “Flight Behavior” as the next One Book One Valley, an annual community-focused reading celebration hosted through the Library.

Butterflies, and their insect relatives, will inspire many programs this January, including a January 11 visit to Westminster’s Butterfly Pavilion. We’ll also learn how to be ‘habitat heroes’ in our own backyards on January 28, with a presentation by Audubon Rockies.

Pest control options that avoid toxic chemicals will be discussed January 9 by a researcher from Colorado’s Department of Agriculture (hint: beneficial insects are the key). The Elementary School’s amazing bee exhibit is the locale

January includes two 90-minute Book Discussions. As in any year, the Library is a neutral convener, encouraging the reading of a shared book, while making no endorsement of its viewpoints.
