Drop Off Christmas Trees December 27January 20 At The Fairgrounds The Town of Estes Park's free Christmas tree drop-off site will be open to local residents 8 a.m. until 3:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, Dec. 27 through Jan. 20, except Jan. 2 when the Town is closed for observation of the New Year's holiday. The drop-off will be located at the east entrance of the Fairgrounds off Community Drive; follow the signs to the fenced drop-off location.

Trees must be stripped of ornaments, tinsel and other decorations. No wreaths, garland, artificial trees or tree stands will be accepted. Trees must be dropped during the specified hours in the identified area. Dropping trees after hours or in other locations at the Fairgrounds will be considered illegal dumping and may be subject to a fine. This service is free of charge to local residents.

The seasonal closure of Larimer County’s Hermit Park Open Space, southeast of Estes Park, will begin effective Tuesday, Dec. 20, 2016.

Hermit Park Open Space will remain closed to the public during the winter months because of winter weather conditions and the protection of wintering range for big game animals, such as elk.

Hermit Park will reopen to the public on March 1, 2017.

2016: A Year In Review As each year comes to a close, we tend to reflect on the passing year by taking a look back at what was accomplished and what history was made. This was a very busy year for your Town government, and we too want to look back and share what your Town accomplished in 2016.

We are a diverse community with diverse ideas; which may be positive to some and not so much to others. One thing I think we can all agree on is that it has been a busy year.

Here are some highlights of what your Town accomplished in 2016: Housing: • Adopted code changes that will make it easier for businesses to provide employee housing on their premises • Approved code changes to provide density incentives for workforce housing • Assisted the Housing Authority with the Housing Needs Assessment and began follow-up action to implement the recommendations Flood Recovery and Planning: • Hosted the Army Corps of Engineers Silver Jackets flood risk/mitigation assessment • Completed flood recovery projects including Brook Court and Moraine Ditch • Completed the Scott Ponds Natural Area dam reconstruction • Started the hydrology study of the major drainages in the Estes Park area.

• Completed the Hydroplant flood recovery project Streets and Transportation: • Approved moving forward with the Downtown Estes Loop • Completed the Dry Gulch Road reconstruction • Started construction of the Visitor Center Transit Facility Parking Structure • Instituted the Barnes Dance downtown, and in cooperation with CDOT added improved signage and striping on US 34 and US 36.

• Fixed 1510 potholes and resurfaced

six miles of roads Parks and Public Facilities: • Installed 72 trash cans with wildlife resistant containers downtown and at Town facilities • Expanded the restrooms at the Visitor Center • Replaced over 30 public benches • Planted more than 30 new trees • Designed, planned and maintained over 25,000 annual plants and planted 450 new perennials.

• Won the medium community category in the International Communities In Bloom Challenge and the International Floral Displays award in the Communities in Bloom program Utilities • Completed the new power line to The Retreat • Obtained funding for and started work on the broadband detailed engineering study • Replaced 1,386 fee of old water main and installed 72,000 feet of new electric line.

Emergency Preparedness • Installed the hazard advisory radio signage with flashing beacons • Established an alternative emergency operations center at the Estes Park Events Complex Other major accomplishments this year included hiring new department heads for the Community Development, Community Services and Finance Departments, electing a new Town Board, adopting the Wildlife Protection Ordinance and producing a balanced Town budget for 2017.

All this was accomplished thanks to the leadership of the Board of Trustees, the continued involvement and participation of the citizens and the hard work and dedication of the Town Staff. Now bring on 2017!

Hear stories about the wonders of the winter season and create something beautiful in our family art center. Meet at Fall River Visitor Center (located on Highway 34) for this 45 minute program (visitor center closed December 25).

Wild in Winter – December 26 - January 1 drop in from 10 to 11 a.m. daily.

Meet Rocky’s wildlife! Come to this 30minute program at Beaver Meadows Visitor Center (located on Highway 36) for a hands-on experience. Discover how the park’s wildlife adapts to the winter season.

Snowshoe Ecology Walks – December 28, 29 and January 4, 7 at 12:30 p.m.

Join a ranger for a beginner- level snowshoe tour exploring the natural world of a subalpine forest. Participants will need to bring their own snowshoes which can be rented at local sporting goods stores. Reservations are required and can be made beginning seven days in advance; call (970) 586-1223. Participants must be eight years old and above.

On the west side of the park: Ski the Wilderness – December 31 at 9:30 a.m.

Join a ranger for this 1.5 hour crosscountry ski tour of the Kawuneeche Valley. Reservations are required, and can be made beginning December 24, call (970) 627-3471. Participants must bring own skis and poles and be eight years old and above.

Snowshoe in the Kawuneeche – December 31 at 1:00 p.m.

Join a ranger for a beginner-level snowshoe tour. Bring your own snowshoes and poles. Reservations are required, and can be made beginning December 24; call (970) 627-3471. Participants must be eight years old and above.

Intermediate Snowshoe Walk: January 1 at 1:00 p.m.

Join a ranger for a more rigorous tour with elevation gains up to 500 feet. This tour requires the ability to maintain a good pace over uneven terrain at high altitude. Bring your own snowshoes and poles. Reservations are required, and can be made beginning December 26; call (970) 627-3471. Participants must be eight years old and above.

The charge(s) are merely an accusation and the defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.

On December 8 at 4:42 p.m. police responded to a disturbance in their lobby at 170 MacGregor Ave. Upon investigation, a 29 year old female from Estes Park was found to be wanted on a warrant out of Arvada, CO. She was taken into custody and transported to Larimer County Detention Center.

On December 14 at 3:35 p.m. police

stopped a 20 year old male driver at S. St. Vrain and First Street for speeding. Upon further investigation the male was found to be in possession of drug paraphernalia.

He was charged with speeding and possession and issued a summons to appear in municipal court.

On December 15 at 5:41 p.m. police were called to a disturbance at 333 E. Wonderview Drive. Upon arrival officers charged a 19 year old male from Estes Park with harassment against a 20 year old victim and a 19 year old victim.

New Regulations Adopted For Vacation Homes In The Estes Valley At the Dec. 15 joint meeting between the Estes Park Town Board of Trustees and the Board of Larimer County Commissioners, the two boards agreed on adoption of identical language pertaining to vacation homes in the Estes Valley Development Code. The updated regulations, which were several years in the making, became effective immediately and replaced requirements in place since 2010. The adopted code amendment can be viewed at www.estes.org/vacationrentals. Features in the new code include: A cap, or maximum number allowed, of 588 vacation homes in the area's residential zoning districts. Vacation homes in non-residential districts have no cap. The cap would be reviewed annually.

An annual operating registration for each vacation home, with a deadline of March 31 each year.

For most vacation homes, a maximum number of eight occupants per vacation home -- two individuals per bedroom in the vacation home, plus two more individuals.

For large houses that could hold nine or more occupants, additional criteria apply, including a case-by-case Large Vacation Home review by the Planning Commission.

Standardized procedures, such as notification of neighbors, an initial inspection, and designation of a local contact.

Earlier this year the Vacation Rental Task Force of community representatives con-

vened specifically to formulate recommendations for vacation rentals with nine or more occupants. The Estes Park Town Board of Trustees, Board of Larimer County Commissioners, and Estes Valley Planning Commission discussed Task Force recommendations at a joint meeting convened Aug. 30 and directed staff to draft code amendments that implement the recommendations.

The Estes Valley model for land-use regulations is unique in Colorado. The Town of Estes Park and Larimer County partnered in the mid-1990s to develop the Estes Valley Comprehensive Plan, a unified vision for land-use planning in both the incorporated and unincorporated areas of the Estes Valley. In 2000, they jointly established the Estes Valley Development Code. The Planning Commission reviews development and subdivision proposals within the entire Estes Valley, though the final decision-making authority lies with the Larimer County Commissioners and Town Board for their respective jurisdictions.

The Fine Arts Guild of the Rockies and Chris Wood announce auditions for its spring musical, The Secret Garden--written by Marsha Norman, composer Lucy Simon--at 5 p.m. Saturday, January 7th; the Hempel Auditorium on the YMCA of the Rockies campus.

Performances of The Secret Garden at the Hempel Auditorium on the YMCA of the Rockies campus will run March 17, 18, 19, 24, and 25.

Ten year old Mary Lennox has lost both her parents to a cholera outbreak in India; she is sent to live with her widowed uncle Archibald Craven in his secluded mansion in the British countryside. There Mary finds other dispirited souls, her uncle who has lost his wife and her uncle's son Colin who is crippled, not only physically but emotionally as he bears the guilt of his mother's death. Mary leads the way toward great healing through determination and love by way of a neglected, secret garden.

The play's primary cast calls for four women, three men, and three children (one girl and two boys aged 10-16 yrs) A secondary cast of dreamers & chorus members requires four-five men & fourfive women.

While the primary cast carries the bulk of the show, the secondary cast supports throughout with wonderfully enchanting choruses and apparitions. For those who have always wanted to experience being on stage and who have good voices, the chorus and dreamer roles are the perfect theatrical opportunity. Cast members outside the Estes Valley receive a stipend for travel expenses.

Candidates are asked to prepare a one-two minute solo piece for The Secret Garden audition. An accompanist will be provided. Candidates may also be asked to read from the script. A perusal copy of the script is available at the Estes Valley Library front desk.

Update: US 34 Canyon Open To All Traffic For Holiday Season The Colorado Department of Transportation and Kiewit Infrastructure Co. will extend the temporarily opening of U.S. 34 between Estes Park and Loveland through the holidays.

Because crews have exceeded production goals the past few weeks, CDOT and Kiewit are combining the previously announced Christmas and New Year’s openings. US 34 will remain open to all motorists, with or without permits, Thursday, Dec. 22, at 4 p.m. through Tuesday, Jan. 3, at 8:30 a.m.

Additionally, the originally announced section requiring pilot cars will be free flowing in both directions which means no 10-minute delays. Crews have worked through the winter conditions to make this possible. Traffic control officers will still assist with monitoring traffic. Motorists should always drive safely and abide by traction laws when necessary.

These openings, and the previous Thanksgiving Holiday opening, are part of CDOT’s promise to reduce the inconvenience to canyon residents and nearby communities as much as possible. Drivers should remember to drive with caution through the construction zones.

After Jan. 3 at 8:30 a.m. until just before the Memorial Day weekend 2017, the

canyon will again be closed to throughtraffic, however open to all drivers east of mile marker 80 and west of mile marker 77. To reach properties in the canyon, and travel between Estes Park and Loveland, drivers should use the detour on US 36 and SH 66.

US 34 Big Thompson Canyon’s roads and bridges were heavily damaged during the 2013 floods with many homes damaged and over 100 air lifted evacuations.

The canyon and its residents also suffered from flooding in 1976. As a result of these two events CDOT has been studying the hydraulic flow of the river in the canyon and its impact on the road and bridges along its path while looking for safety improvements and resiliency solutions to prevent/protect against future flood events.

I’m still here! I took an unintended hiatus from column-writing – does anyone else feel like autumn ended up being way busier than anticipated? We spent a lot of time working, a little time escaping into the backcountry, and even took some short weekend trips to Seattle (one of our favorite places) and back to Illinois (Chicago suburbs of Sycamore and Saint Charles, where respectively, Jordan and I were born and raised). Now I’m marveling that it’s only a few days before Christmas and next week it will be 2017.

How can that be possible? Whether we can believe it or not, 2016 is almost over (thankfully, I must say… this past year has been kind of a wild ride).

Before it makes its way out the door, I wanted to reflect on holiday traditions from my childhood as well as some that Jordan and I have adopted: • Holiday baking! There are so many memories surrounding baking for the holidays, from trips to my grandma’s house to make molasses gingerbread men, to ordering Rosati’s pizzas and decorating sugar cookies with the Kanes (family friends so close that their kids called my parents “Aunt Pat” and “Uncle Ward”). Some of those traditions have morphed into new versions – for example, my parents host a legendary pizzaand-cookie party with our Estes Park family and friends. We think of the Kanes every year and hope that someday they’ll be able to join us for some high al-

titude cookie decorating. Now, Jordan and I also have our own holiday baking tradition: we make gingerbread-shaped sugar cookies and decorate four of them to look like the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

• Books for the little ones in our family.

Our first year of being an aunt and uncle, we decided to purchase one of our favorite books as a Christmas gift for our nephew Theodore. We wrote a short message inside the front cover, sharing why we loved that book and how we hoped he would like it, too. Every year since, as the family has expanded, we have gifted a different book for each of our nieces and nephews, all with a personalized message inside those front covers. It gives us joy to add to their personal libraries, as reading was (and is) one of our most treasured pastimes.

• Holiday music. Some of my favorite Christmas tunes are a little off the traditionally beaten path. “Back Door Santa”

by Clarence Carter and “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer,” the Ray Charles version, are two of my most-played – I have my dad to thank for that. Of course, “What Christmas Means to Me” by Stevie Wonder, “Santa Claus Is Coming to Town” by Jackson 5, and “The 12 Days of Christmas – Live” by Straight No Chaser are high up on the list as well. My alltime, must-listen, isn’t-Christmas-without-it song, though, is “Christmas Bells”

EPNEWS.COM ‘Tis the season to sing carols. The true season. Not the week after Halloween, when we are jolted by the sound of “Jingle Bell Rock” over the department store speakers before we’ve had a chance to put away our Frankenstein costume, but the honest to goodness caroling season—just days away from Christmas. Joy to the world!

The old-time band I play with was invited to lead a Rotary club in a round of carols one early morning this past week. The string band plays tunes written prior to and through the 19th Century so we had a plethora of songs to choose from. We’ve been celebrating Christmas for more than 2,000 years, after all.

Music plays such a central roll in the celebration of Christmas, more than any other holiday.

The songs you and I grew up singing each Christmas have been sung around hearths and pianos, by groups strolling from house to house in the neighborhood and in churches lit by candlelight, for hundreds of years. The very same songs. The depth of the history of these songs is impressive.

Not “Santa Baby” and “All I Want for Christmas Is My Two Front Teeth” but meaningful hymns and festive yuletide carols; thinking of the many generations singing these same songs gives me goosebumps. A sampling: “Silent Night” was written in 1818, “Joy to the World” in 1719, “Away in the Manger” in the 15th Century, and the lyrics to Deck the Halls were written in 1862.

One particular carol struck a chord with me this year: “I Heard the Bells on Christmas Day.” The lyrics are a poem written on Christmas Day of 1863 at the height of the Civil War, by a despairing Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. His son had joined the Union army against his wishes and his wife of 18 years was fatally burned in a fire two years earlier. Longfellow’s poem acknowledges the reality of tragedy and sadness in our lives as he makes reference to the Civil War in two stanzas that are not sung in the carol. But we take heart, as he concludes with the bells carrying renewed hope for peace. The last two stanzas are apropos for those who are discouraged with the state of our world today.

Families For Estes: How Does Your Involvement Help?

For the past two years, Families for Estes has hosted its’ fall Pumpkins and Pilsners event with the goal of raising funds to promote and support educational and recreational programs and activities for children and families in our community. The Pumpkins and Pilsners events have been very successful and earlier this year Families for Estes issued a call for grant proposals through which we were able to give $10,000 back to area projects supporting the children and families of Estes Park. We were thrilled to award the $10,000 amongst six very worthy projects and we will be doing the same again this year.

1. Our largest award of $2,900 went to the Middle School STEM program lead

by Joe Frey. The middle school STEM program requested monies to purchase a 3-D printer as well as four robotics kits.

This technology can aid various disciplines and each middle school student will have the opportunity to use this exciting technology.

2. FFE chose to grant $2,500 to Scott and Brandi Applegate to fund the inaugural year of the “Plant a Book, Grow a Child” program. This initiative is designed to empower local teachers to be able to help elementary age children who might not otherwise be able to buy books during the annual school book fair. This year’s program was able to provide 392 books to 149 students.

3. In support of Sherry Davis and the

Estes Park Middle School, FFE gave $2,000 to fund the 2017 Middle School Career Day. During career day the middle school students will participate in various career exploration activities. Students will visit and make connections with professionals from a diverse spectrum of fields. This funding will also support interactive workshops which allow students to explore areas of interest in greater depth.

4. FFE gave $1,000 to Estes Valley Investment in Childhood Success (EVICS) to support in the purchase of books they used for parents in their monthly education series, books for children who attend the program, and supplies for Family Night activities. The free event is open to any family in the community with children ages 0-5, and includes dinner, an interactive parent-child activity, and one hour of parent education while children are cared for in supervised classrooms.

5. The Cultural Arts Council of Estes Park received $1,000 from Families for Estes to be used as seed money for a new children’s art workshop. The goal of the workshop is to teach children to express themselves through arts and crafts and to learn new skills with tools and techniques that employ many different art materials. A portion of the funds received were used to offer partial and full scholarships to qualifying families.

6. Finally, Families for Estes awarded the elementary school’s Unplugged Club with $600 to be used toward the purchase of snow shoes for the children. The Unplugged Club, founded by Anne Leija and Libby Brubaker, focuses on getting children grades K-2 out and about in nature on a monthly basis. By having their own collection of snow shoes, the Unplugged Club will help children take greater advantage of being outdoors during the winter months.

In addition to this grant money, FFE has also supported these additional projects throughout the community in the past year: community garden preschool plots and kid’s area, Cinco de Mayo community celebration, youth library programs, FAST (Families and Seniors Together) Events, Babies with Altitude Birth Bags and the EPMC Teddy Bear Clinic.

Estes Valley Land Trust Announces Second New Conservation Easement Forged By 40 Year Friendship

Estes Valley Land Trust is pleased to announce that it has closed on a second newly conserved property in two weeks.

The Crownover Conservation Easement, located on Jacob Road near Little Valley, has been forty years in the making.

Leo Weber, Estes Valley Land Trust Vice President, first met Norris and Judy Crownover in 1976, as a young woodworker. “Norris was gracious and shared his cabin with me,” Weber said.

“I was a young guy and had just moved to Estes Park. I was living out of a van and Norris offered to let me stay in his cabin,” recalled Weber. “I couldn’t pass up the offer.”

Now the cabin, and the forty acres on which it sits, are permanently protected with a conservation easement held by the Estes Valley Land Trust. The easement closed on December 9th.

The Crownover Conservation Easement has dramatic views into the East Fork of Fish Creek and Little Valley. Also it can be seen from prominent recreational areas, including Twin Sisters Peaks in Rocky Mountain National Park, The Crags, and Kruger Rock in Hermit Park Open Space.

The property is surrounded on two sides by the Arapaho/Roosevelt National Forest and is adjacent to the Cheley Camp property to the south.

“The fact that this new conservation easement borders the Cheley Camp and buffers them from major development activity is very exciting for us,” said Jeffrey Boring, Estes Valley Land Trust Executive Director.

“Cheley Camp is a fixture in Estes Park and thousands of kids over the years have fallen in love with the outdoors and Estes Park through the camp,” stated Boring.

“We’re glad we can give back by helping protect their borders and ensure the camp remains in a natural setting.”

The Crownover Conservation Easement is located in a dramatic setting of large rock outcrops and open forests and contains an intermittent stream.

The property has been identified by Colorado Parks and Wildlife as providing habitat for deer, elk and bighorn sheep.

The conservation easement ensures these natural features and the wildlife habitat they provide will be protected forever.

“It’s so nice to be able to work with Leo and donate this conservation easement to the Estes Valley Land Trust,” said Norris Crownover. “The forty acres and old cabin have been a special place for us over the years. We have lots of good memories up there and it’s good to know it’s not going to change much.”

Weber and Boring expressed their appreciation to the Crownovers for their commitment to preserving the beauty of the community.

Estes Valley Land Trust’s mission is to preserve and protect open space, valleys, wetlands, streams, ranch lands, and wildlife habitat in the Estes Valley and surrounding area. Lands adjacent to Rocky Mountain National Park and ArapahoRoosevelt National Forest are of special concern.

By now I would think that all the Christmas shopping is complete (except maybe the husband’s, mine always waited until the last minute). The decorations are up and the stockings are hung. We will have Christmas Eve here at my home; Levi has decided that is the tradition. I think she really likes getting to open at least the present from me and maybe her aunt’s before Christmas Day. It is really nice that I have company on that night and then get to go to Marie’s and Greg’s on Christmas Day and of course Mass. I have found for me that the 10 a.m. service is great as it is not crowded and the actual day of celebration for the birth of my Lord.

Christmas Eve I will have a simple meal for Esther & Sunshine the family, ending with cookies for dessert and Santa Claus. A friend of mine from Cheyenne was in Estes the other day and had me over for coffee, cookies and a visit. Her orange drop cookies were so tender and delicious, I immediately asked for the recipe.

She kindly gave it to me to share with y’all. I have made them (and another kind), frozen them, and will use them that night. The recipe makes at least five dozen. I did not want that many so I halved the recipe. Now how do you halve three eggs? I finally came up with a simple solution in case you want to do the same. I mixed the three eggs in a measuring cup, came up with ½ cup so I used ¼ of a cup for the recipe and had scrambled eggs for breakfast the next day.

Another hint; the recipe calls to grease the baking sheets so I used Pam. Now, do not do that unless you have the pan dripping with Pam. I will thoroughly grease the pans next time with butter as a number of my cookies stuck to the baking sheets. I am sure if you use more Pam than I did it will be ok but I will stick with butter so my cookies will not stick to the pan!

Orange Drop Cookies Pre-heat oven to 350 4 ½ cups flour 1 tsp. baking soda 2 tsp. baking powder 2 cups sugar 1 cup butter (2 sticks.)

3 eggs 1 cup sour cream 2 oranges (I used the big navel oranges) Grate rind of 2 oranges. Juice the two oranges. Mix flour, baking soda and baking powder together in large bowl.

Cream butter and sugar and then add the flour mix to that. Add remaining ingredients and blend well. (I just continued to use the mixer.) Drop batter by teaspoon onto well greased baking sheet. (The cookies will get a lot larger.) Bake for 1415 minutes or until edges are slightly brown. Mine took 14 minutes. Take off of

baking sheet after a few minutes. Place on a rack with wax paper underneath.

Ice while still warm.

Icing: Mix 1 pound powder sugar with

juice and rind of one orange until smooth. Ice the cookies while still warm.

I dropped some icing on each cookie then spread the icing around the cookie.

Tiny Tots & Breakfast with Santa was hosted on Saturday, December 10, 2016 at the American Legion. Tiny Tots is hosted by the American Legion Auxiliary Unit 119. This year many agencies collaborated to provide this annual event for all families in the community. Estes Park News took pictures of 192 children with Santa, which is in this week’s edition (see pages 21-30), the Lions Club served 175 pancake breakfasts, and the Estes Valley Recreation & Park District (EVRPD) provided supplies and volunteers for cookie decorating, ornament making, and other crafts. Over 400 friends and families arrived for Santa’s visit!

The EVRPD would like to extend a very warm thank you to all the agencies for collaborating and allowing the rec district to join their annual event with Tiny

Tots and helping make it a very special event! The outcome was tremendous and there were a lot of fun activities for all the kids, families, and all ages in-between to enjoy. The American Legion was a great venue and their volunteers were always on hand.

They did a wonderful job of decorating and being Santa’s elves. WHEN YOU TAKE THE SON, YOU GET ALL A true story from long ago, seems appropriate at this special holiday season.

Many years ago, there was a very wealthy man who shared a passion for art with his son. They had priceless works by Picasso and Van Gogh adorning the walls of their family mansion. As winter approached the nation went to war, and the young man left to serve his country. Sometime later the father received the news that his son had died in a heroic rescue attempt. Devastated by the news, the old man faced the Christmas holidays with anguish and sadness. The season’s joy had vanished with the death of his son. On Christmas morning a knock on the door awaked the grieving father. As he walked to the door the masterpieces of art on the walls only reminded him that his son was not coming home. As he opened the door he was greeted by a soldier bearing a large package. He explained, “I was a friend of your son. I was the one he was rescuing when he was killed. May I come in for a few moments? I have something to show you.” The soldier said that he was an artist and gave the old man the package. The paper gave way to reveal a portrait of the man’s son. Though not the work of a genius, the painting featured the young man’s face in striking detail. Overcome with emotion, the father hugged his benefactor and then hung the portrait over the fireplace, moving aside millions of dollars’ worth of art. After his guest left, the old man sat in his chair and spent Christmas gazing at the gift he had been given. The painting of his son became his most prized possession, far eclipsing any interest in the pieces of art for which museums around the world clamored. The following spring the old man died. The art world waited with anticipation for the upcoming auction. According to the old man’s will, the art works would be auctioned on Christmas Day, the day he had received his greatest gift. The day arrived and art collectors from around the world gathered to bid on some of the world’s most desired paintings. Dreams would be fulfilled that day. The auction began with a painting that was not on anyone’s museum list. It was the painting of the man’s son.

The auctioneer asked for an opening bid, but the room was silent. “Who will open the bidding with $100.00?” No one spoke. Finally someone said, “Who cares about that painting? It’s just a painting of his son. Let’s move on to the good stuff!” The auctioneer responded, “No, we have to sell this one first. Now, who will take the son?” Finally, a servant who had worked for the man offered $10.00.

“That’s all I have. I knew the boy, I’d like to have it.” The auctioneer said, “Going once, going twice, three times. Sold!” The gavel fell.

Cheers filled the room and someone exclaimed, “Now we can bid on the real treasures!”

The auctioneer looked at the room filled with people and announced, “The auction is now over!”

Everyone was stunned. Someone spoke up, “What do you mean, it’s over? We didn’t come all the way here for a painting of someone’s son. There are millions of dollars’ worth of art here. What’s going on?” The auctioneer replied, “It’s very simple. According the will of the father, whoever takes the son…gets it all.”

The story of the arrival of the Father’s Son in Bethlehem long ago, opens the door to all the ‘treasures’ that are given to those who ‘take’, thus honoring, the Son. Love, Joy, Peace, Forgiveness, Hope, Eternal life, are all thrown in. Have you placed your bid?

Holiday Closures For Senior Center The Estes Park Senior Center will be closed Friday, December 23 and Monday, December 26 for the Christmas holiday and closed Monday, January 2 for the New Year’s holiday. There will be no dining room or Meals on Wheels services on those two days. Ask any parent of an infant or toddler about childcare in Estes Park, and you will likely be met with an anxious response about the difficulty in finding care. The availability of licensed childcare services is limited in Estes Park, especially for infants and toddlers. Licensing guidelines have become more stringent in recent years, and the cost of providing care, especially for babies, makes it difficult for childcare centers to provide services for children younger than age 2 ½.

EVICS is happy to announce Estes Park now has another licensed in-home child care provider option! Alice Miller provider at Ponderosa Pine Playschool received her license this month and will open the doors of her home to families seeking childcare for children ages 1-5 starting January 3rd 2017. Alice completed a 15-hour pre-licensing class focused on child growth and development, in addition to receiving certifications in first aid, CPR, safe sleep practices, shaken baby prevention, immunization standards, medication administration, and mandatory reporting requirements.

Licensed homes are regularly inspected by the Division of Childcare for health, safety, and compliance with all rules and regulations. Alice received a Standard Family Childcare License from the state of Colorado, which limits her to six young children per session/per day. Alice has her Ph.D. in ecology and has worked as an ecologist throughout the Western U.S. and around the world. She is passionate about wild places, and the

importance of nature for children. She is excited to begin this new adventure in her life by offering exceptional early childhood care centered on nature-based play. At Ponderosa Pine Playschool there’s a commitment to outside play every day fostering exploration and discovery, appropriate risk taking and selfregulation. Ponderosa Pine Playschool offers care for children during the day, 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday-Thursday. There is also a half day or full day option. In addition to Ponderosa Pine Playschool, there are five other licensed childcare homes in Estes Park, caring for our youngest citizens. Two full day childcare centers offer preschool and childcare for children ages 2.5 – 5, and two part-day preschool programs offer early childhood education. There are also two licensed after-school programs for schoolage children during the week.

EVICS’ mission is to support and promote quality early childhood services, and provide parent education, so that all young children in the Estes Valley have the care, support, and opportunities necessary to grow, learn, and succeed.

Somewhere in Victorian England at the onset of the industrial revolution, you can imagine the snow-swept entry of an accountant’s thriving business which has been in the family for generations. His main offices are in an old building, and his clients walk up a single, elegant marble step to reach the front door. Over time, the marble step wore down until it developed a deep dent that was increasingly hazardous to his clientele.

One day, the accountant asked a stonemason to take a look at the situation and give him a quote on how much a new marble step would cost. The stonemason examined the step and then scratched his head. “It’s a big job,” said the stonemason. “But I suppose I could give you a new step for 100 pounds.”

The accountant frowned. “That’s a bit more than I wanted to pay.” They both looked at the step, and then the accountant asked: “What if you dug up the step, turned it over, and put it back into the ground? Then it would be good as new.”

The stonemason nodded. “20 pounds.”

“Do that,” said the accountant, and he went back inside the office.

A few hours later the stonemason rang the bell. The accountant walked to the door, opened it, and saw the stonemason standing next to the marble step that he’d dug out of the ground. A nearly identical dent gutted on the other side.

The stonemason chuckled. “From the looks of it, I’d say your great-great-great-granddaddy thought of the same thing about 150 years ago.”

The accountant, now also laughing, said, "perhaps the combination of cleverness and frugality are strong enough to endure across the generations."

Recycling Update Once Christmas celebrations are over, there are many leftovers to dispose of or put to good use. For most families, deciding what can and cannot be used among the wrappings, cards, décor, and leftover food will be your challenge. If you do your job well, you will not need an extra trash bag.

Leftover food should be addressed first as it is perishable. According to the EPA, Americans consistently discard about a third of the food we grow, wasting 25% of our water producing what is not used, creating 13% of our greenhouse gas emissions, and costing the average family of four $1,600 a year. For information on controlling food waste, check out www.epa.gov/sustainable-management-food/food-too-goodwaste-implementation-guide-and-toolkit There are also several websites, but www.foodsafety.gov is the easiest to remember. A few guidelines will elongate the life of the buffet.

Keep hot foods hot (> 140 degrees) using chafing dishes, slow cookers, and warming trays.

Cold foods stays cold (< 40 degrees) when nested in bowls of ice. And, of course, clear the food promptly to minimize spoilage. Guests can still take home food when they leave.

After the party is over, the sooner the better, leftovers should be pulled out, stored in proper containers, and frozen. With today’s microwaves, we can freeze foods for reheating – just in case they do not get eaten promptly.

Freezing single servings that can be easily and quickly reheated helps assure its reuse. How-

ever – the old adage still applies, when in doubt, better safe than sorry.

And while you are cleaning up leftovers, consider that unopened can of cranberry sauce, pumpkin, or whatever you will forget to use.

Crossroads and other food banks get enormous contributions during the “giving” holidays, but often are forgotten the remainder of the winter when some are out of work for the winter season.

For those who have unplantable live trees, this year’s holiday tree drop, provided by the Town of Estes Park Public Works Department, will be open from Dec. 27 – Jan. 20.

Other decorations? At our house: a few get set aside for repairs or donated to the craft box but the majority are carefully packed away until next year, when we get to do this all over again.

When cleaning up the piles of wrapping supplies after opening gifts, first consider storing for the next time you wrap. If you have room for a box or two, there will be no need to buy ribbons and bows, package decorations and maybe even paper next year. Nesting boxes maximized space in the closet. If you cannot use them or give them away, then recycle.

They can last months, maybe years in the landfill.

And the cards! Cut carefully, paper and cards from one holiday are often appropriate for another, serving as gift tags, place cards, name tags, and labels of all types throughout the year. Happy Holidays!

Cultural Arts CouncilWith A Difference Twenty-six years ago the Cultural Arts Council was formed with the help of Linda Vogel at the request of the Town of Estes Park as an umbrella organization for the arts of Estes Park. Over the years things have changed but we have always steered toward keeping this mission. Our founding Mission Statement is: “The Cultural Arts Council of Estes Park enhances the quality and accessibility of visual and performing arts for people of all ages.” The arts of many types are important to the people and soul of a town and it has been our desire to contribute to this. Over the years we brought national shows like Arts for the Parks and have helped develop a nationally recognized show Estes Park Plein Air and, most recently, Plein Air Rockies. For 18 years we brought free music and other performance art to Performance Park (with many wonderful artists including Brad Fitch and the Village Band) and encouraged youth artistic expression (through Imagine This, workshops, the annual Student Expressions and other programs).

Throughout most of this time we have operated out of a gallery and we sold art to help allow us to present our many programs. We have relied on Plein Air Rockies to help carry us through the year. Despite the wonderful art presented, our sales were down about half.

We also experienced a loss of funding from grants due to lack of available funds from traditional granting institutions.

We have decided to leave our current gallery – with much reluctance because it is a wonderful space. We are also losing our great paid staff in an effort to drop our overhead to almost zero.

But, we are not disappearing, we are going

to take a few months to strengthen our organization and work on new programming for the rest of the year. We are looking to reappear in a smaller gallery around the first of June. In the near future we will still be working on commitments to our artists, putting out Art Walk maps, hosting or co-hosting programs in various spaces around town and keeping up our web and social media presence to help our artists and let everyone know what is going on with us and around town. I think the future is bright and exciting as far as what we will be bringing to the Estes Valley.

In order to keep this all going and to grow into a stronger organization that supports the arts in the Estes Valley, we need your help. It was a wonderful and evening, and our most successful event to date! It seemed that everyone had a great time connecting, enjoying food and drink, and art and artists. And a very special thanks to the people who came out in a wild snow storm to support artists to continue making and selling art, and Bright Christmas with their presence and purchases. 20% of art sales were donated to Bright Christmas, for a donation of $836. Thanks also to Tamara Jarolimek for donating a $25 gift certificate to Aspen & Evergreen Gallery to have for a door prize.

Heart of Expression is about expressing our hearts as ourselves in whatever way each of us does that. We create events in which each person has the opportunity to experience the joy of expression and participate in the creation of prosperity and community. In a joyful and magical way, our events strive to support artists, restaurants/spiritmakers, nonprofits, and the community as a whole. From the four events held in our first year, attendees have purchased art totaling $8,681, which has not only supported artists, but also has created donations for local nonprofits of $1,736.

Heart of Expression: Art that Connects is a collaboration of Rocky Mountain Day Hikes and Enlightening the Living Heart. We hold four seasonal events each year. Our next event will be held in March. Free Developmental Screenings For Young Children January 10 Estes Valley Investment in Childhood Success (EVICS) holds monthly developmental screenings for young children in Estes Park. These FREE screenings are open to parents of children between the ages of 0-5. All Estes Park families are welcome to schedule a screening time for our upcoming screening on Tuesday, January 10.

Screenings for young children can celebrate milestones and detect delays. Early identification and intervention for devel-

opmental concerns can positively impact school readiness in both academic and social emotional areas. Our trained staff will do simple screening assessments for hearing, vision, and development. These assessments will help to identify areas of concern, monitor growth and development, and make any necessary referrals for services.

Canyon Concert Ballet Supports Local Boys And Girls Club Members With Tickets To Nutcracker Founded in 1979 in Fort Collins Colorado, Canyon Concert Ballet (CCB) produced their 35th annual Nutcracker Ballet at the Lincoln Center featuring the Fort Collins Symphony and three guest artists. Five consecutive shows were sold out in the 1,200+ seat performance hall this past weekend. A not-for-profit 501c3 organization, CCB’s mission is to create and share the passion of dance through artistically enriching performances and dance education.

Among the audience members were 8 Boys & Girls Clubs of Larimer County (BGCLC) Members who received complementary tickets. "CCB was pleased to provide tickets to our production of The Nutcracker to the Boys & Girls Clubs and to other area youth groups,” said CCB Board President Ms. Lindsay McCarthy.

“Sharing dance with our Northern Colorado youth is a true privilege, and one of the corps values of our organization,” added McCarthy.

The BGCLC students are among 50 that CCB Guest Artist Mr. Radoslaw Kokoskza has been teaching this fall, in an extension of a special pilot program which began between Ballet Renaissance and BGCLC this past summer in Estes Park. The Cultural Arts Council Is Celebrating The Holiday With Special Events This Final Weekend The Cultural Arts Council of Estes Park has a wonderful selection of holiday gifts to choose form at its current show, “Holiday Gifts & Miniatures,” on exhibition through tomorrow (Christmas Even) at its current location, 423 W. Elkhorn Ave (near the Bighorn Restaurant).

Healing Waters Extends Thanks For Grants Received In 2016 Dear Editor: Healing Waters Foundation, Inc wishes to thank the Community Thrift, Rotary Club of Estes Park, Estes Valley Sunrise Rotary and Salud for grants this past year.

With money received from these grants Healing Waters was able to offer reduced pool passes to clients who were unable to afford the cost of $15 for a 30-minute workout in the pool. Healing Waters is available to everyone for exercising in warm water whether it be walking on the underwater treadmill or swimming against the resistance jets. But more than that, it allows individuals who otherwise could not exercise to be functionally active.

We have seen an increase use of the pool for fitness of all levels, use for weight loss, and conditioning for sports and those with sport injuries. Some have come to use the pool with their small children to help them become comfortable with the water in a warmer water pool.

One woman using the pool for general fitness and weight loss has lost more than forty pounds, has become much more active and considers her time in the pool more "fun" than work. Many find that exercising in the pool is more enjoyable and has surprisingly great re-

sults, while not feeling the muscle pain of other types of exercising. Between the buoyancy of the water, resistance in the water, and the warmer temperature; many individuals found reduction in swelling, plus increased muscle strength and therefore less joint pain. Many have found an improvement in balance and general sense of well-being. One does not need to "like" water or be able to swim to be able to get benefits of the warm water pool. It is personal and many enjoy the privacy of exercising in their own space.

Healing Waters is thankful that through grants like we have received this year, we can offer the pool to anyone in the area, all ages, fitness, and income levels.

So, with much appreciation and gratitude we thank these fine organizations: The Rotary Club of Estes Park, Estes Valley Sunrise Rotary, Salud, and The Community Thrift Shop for helping the community benefit from Healing Waters Aquatic Center. We look forward to continued partnership with this great philanthropic community.

Paul David “Dave” Jacks Paul David “Dave” Jacks, 70, passed away peacefully on December 13, 2016 in Colorado. Born April 20, 1946 in Beech Grove, he was a graduate of Southport High School, Class of 1964. He was president and former owner of American Industrial Corporation. He retired in 2010 from there after 40 years of dedication. Dave was always active! He enjoyed time spent in Greenwood with his family and in Estes Park, Colorado, where he was often hiking, snowshoeing, or skiing. When wintering in St. Pete Beach, Florida he would play shuffle board. Dave liked cycling and exercise. A longtime member of Greenwood Christian Church, he served at the Interchurch Food Pantry in Franklin, IN, the Larimar County Food Pantry in CO. He was a past Hike Master at the YMCA of the Rockies and had been a volunteer for the Road Hogs- Rocky Mountain Road Crew in Estes Park, CO. He is survived by his

best friend, Anita Jacks; children, Renee Cox (Derek); David Jacks (Brenda), Melanie Gorrell (Jason); eight grandchildren, Trevor and Kevin Cox; Courtenay Cox Sutton (Benjamin), Allison, Brittany, and William Jacks; Evan and Melia Gorrell; parents, Paul and Betty (Hoop) Jacks; siblings, Mark Jacks ( Gina), Timothy Jacks (Karen), Deborah Harper (Mike).

He was preceded in death by grandson Colby Cox. His dog Dunphy had a special place in his heart.

A memorial visitation was held on Sunday, Dec. 18 from 1-4 p.m. at G.H. Herrmann Greenwood Funeral Home at The Gardens at Olive Branch, 1605 S. State Road 135, which was followed by the Memorial Service at 4 p.m. There will be a Memorial Service at later date in Estes Park, CO. Memorial contributions may be made to the Rocky Mountain Conservancy (rmconversancy.org ).

The successful candidate must acquire and maintain a valid State of Colorado Class B Commercial driver’s license and reside within a 30 minute response time of the Upper Thompson Sanitation District office, at posted speed limits.

Upper Thompson Sanitation District is a drug and tobacco free work place. Prior to employment, the successful candidate is required to complete employment and substance screening, including a pre-placement physical and background investigation.

Operator starting pay is $17.00/hour in addition to a competitive employee benefit package, including health insurance and retirement.
