Community Assistance Requested As Police Investigate Peculiar Gang Activity

Living in our mountain village, we often feel insulated from the more negative issues in our society. Estes Park’s crime rate is low, people feel safe in our neighborhoods and we don’t seem to have big city issues. But some issues are hidden from the public, just under the surface.

After hundreds of hours of undercover investigation, Chief Kufeld and District Attorney Cliff Riedel have authorized me to release the results of an investigation into one of these disturbing issues.

Since early July, the Estes Park Police Department (EPPD) has been working undercover, investigating a case of “community espionage” that one of our officers, Harmony Mason, discovered by chance. You may not have heard of the term “community espionage” before, but it is a problem that has persisted in many communities for decades.

While on routine patrol last July, Officer Mason noticed what appeared to be a prowler lurking behind a house on Chapin Lane. The prowler was described as wearing a green hoodie with red trim, about 3’2” and 100 pounds, with red hair and a full beard.

Officer Mason tried to intercept the prowler but he seemed to just disappear. Now being aware of the M.O., Officer Mason notified Chief Kufeld and a special covert task force of the Estes Park Police Department was formed to investigate.

The EPPD has discovered a gang of prowlers that were operating throughout Estes Park. Investigators identified over 20 members of this gang, all apparently in the U.S. illegally. None had passports or work visas and they appear to have entered the country through Canada.

The gang is linked to multiple reports of prowlers, yet they have never been connected to any robberies or other crimes.

They all seem to be of the same small ethnic minority or possibly even related.

Peculiarly, all members of the gang are under 3’3” in height and have what appears to be a common abnormality to their ears. Similar to other gangs, such as the Bloods and the Crips, these gang members always wear green and red.

Although Officer Mason’s initial description of the hoodie was later found

by Detective Caleb Robertson to be more of a tunic type jacket accompanied by a conical green hat.

A major concern to investigators is the gang's propensity to be observing small children throughout the commu-

nity. They appear to go to great lengths to avoid actual contact with children, but they do seem to be taking extensive notes on their behavior on a daily basis. Multiple attempts to apprehend these suspects all failed and we have no idea exactly where they have their base of operations in the community. We did manage to get a GPS tracking and listening device on one of the gang members in September.

This individual left the country, again through Canada, in late October. We lost track of his GPS signal somewhere over the Yukon territory. Transcripts of

the listening device while he was still here did gain some useful intelligence.

The gang seems to have a single charismatic leader, often referred to as “The Man” or “The Big Guy.” Although we were never able to determine their ultimate objective, they seem to be taking notes on the behavior of all Estes Park residents. The gang appear to be categorizing all the citizens into two categories. We were unable to identify exactly what the categories mean because all we were able to intercept were shorthand text messages. Names of citizens seemed to be connected to either a “N :-)” list or a “N :-(“ list. Here in Estes Park, the “N :-)“ list appears to be much longer than the “N :-( “ list. Specific comments (redacted to protect the privacy of the victims) included items such as “MARY ate all her Brussel sprouts,” and “TOM was a courteous driver,” or “xxxxxx plays well with others.”

Gang activity peaked in mid-December, leading investigators to believe the gang was preparing for some type of major event beginning late in the evening on December 24 and ending in the wee hours of the morning on December 25. This event appears to be a coordinated effort with similar covert groups throughout the world.

No clear photographs are available of the subjects, but Captain Eric Rose was able to catch a silhouette of one of the subjects early one morning in August.

If you see anyone matching this silhouette and the description, please contact the Estes Park Police Department immediately. In the meantime, have a wonderful holiday season, Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.

members, police officers, staff and their families delivered to each recipient two full boxes of food, plus another full bag of food and gifts, valued at approximately $268 per recipient.Three tons of food was distributed in total!

Larimer County: New Sales And Use Tax Rates Effective January 1, 2019 Postcards in U.S. Mail this week to vendors and businesses Larimer County sales and use taxes will increase to 0.8 percent from 0.55 percent, effective January 1, 2019.

The Larimer County sales tax is collected along with the State sales tax of 2.9 percent, and any applicable City/Town sales tax. The Colorado Department of Revenue will update both the DR100 “Retail Sales Tax Return” paper form and the sales tax return on Revenue Online to reflect the new county rate. Larimer County’s service fee

Recent Search Activities For Micah Tice

Beginning Friday morning, December 7, through Sunday, December 9 search activities for Micah Tice were focused from the Granite Pass area to the northern lower slopes of Longs Peak, including the Wind River and Boulder Brook drainages. On Monday, December 10, due to conducive weather conditions at high elevations on Longs Peak, teams focused their efforts on the Keyhole Route to the summit of Longs Peak as well as the Chasm Lake area, Clark’s Arrow and the Loft. On Tuesday, December 11, searchers again focused efforts in the Wind River drainage.

Searchers continue to experience chest deep snow, thick snow covered forests, and vast areas of dead and down trees, especially in drainages away from snow packed trails. At higher elevations, winds scour the landscape leaving it bare or depositing deep drifted snow. These conditions have existed since the first day of search operations and can cover or erase clues.

On December 4, search managers announced that overall search operations had been suspended and that search activities may occur during winter months if conditions allow. Friday through Tuesday’s search efforts were part of these search activities.

On Monday afternoon, November 26, park rangers were notified that the Air Force Academy was asking for assistance in locating Cadet Candidate Micah Tice, 20, of Las Vegas, Nevada.

His vehicle was subsequently located at the Longs Peak Trailhead at approximately 3:30 p. m. on November 26. At sunrise, Tuesday, November 27, active search efforts began in the Longs Peak area of Rocky Mountain National Park for Tice.

Tice was last seen on Saturday, November 24, by other park visitors between 7:30 and 8 a. m. in the Battle Mountain Area. The visitors indicated the weather was terrible at the Longs Peak Trailhead and that visibility and weather conditions continued to worsen. Tice was reported to be wearing a black sweatshirt, black sweatpants, a black hat, black lightweight gloves, tennis shoes and a light blue backpack. The visitors discouraged Tice to continue to the summit due to his clothing, footwear and weather conditions.

Micah had apparently not communicated his plans to anyone.

Over a seven day intensive search period, ground and aerial searchers covered

an approximate 10 square mile search area. These efforts were focused on sections of the Longs Peak Trail, the East Longs Peak Trail, the Battle Mountain area, Granite Pass, Jim’s Grove, the Boulder Field, Mount Lady Washington, Chasm Lake, Peacock Pool, the Boulder Brook drainage, the Storm Pass Trail, and the Wind River drainage. On Sunday, December 2, the first day conditions were conducive to flying this area, search managers assigned aerial searchers from the Colorado Air National Guard to perform reconnaissance of the entire Keyhole Route to the summit of Longs Peak.

They had tried previously on November 27, but were curtailed due to wind gusts over 90 mph on Longs Peak.

Few clues have been discovered during search efforts. Depending on the search area and day, team members have encountered harsh winter conditions including extreme winds, low visibility, bitter wind chills, below freezing temperatures, deep snow and high avalanche danger.

The park has worked closely with the US Air Force Academy since the beginning of this incident, coordinating investigative and operational assistance, and incorporating a team from the Air Force Academy Mountaineering Club in search efforts. The Air Force Academy Colorado Parents’ Club coordinated efforts from numerous organizations and individuals to donate daily meals for searchers.

Also assisting Rocky Mountain National Park Search and Rescue team members has been Larimer County Search and Rescue, Rocky Mountain Rescue based in Boulder County, Colorado Air National Guard, Alpine Rescue Team, Diamond Peaks Ski Patrol, Colorado Avalanche Information Center, Grand County Search and Rescue, Douglas County Search and Rescue, Colorado Search and Rescue Board, Summit County Rescue Group Dog Team, Front Range Rescue Dogs, and FLIR Systems Inc. who volunteered their services to conduct thermal imaging of the search area.

Micah Tice is still a missing person and our investigation will continue in hopes of gaining further information as to his plans on the day of his disappearance.

Drop Off Christmas Trees December 26-January 18 At The Fairgrounds The Town of Estes Park's free Christmas tree drop-off site will be open to local residents 8 a.m. until 3:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, Dec. 26 through Jan. 18, except Jan. 1 when the Town is closed for observation of the New Year's holiday.

The drop-off will be located at the east entrance of the Fairgrounds off Community Drive; follow the signs to the fenced drop-off location. Trees must be stripped of ornaments, tinsel and other decora-

tions. No wreaths, garland, artificial trees or tree stands will be accepted. Trees must be dropped during the specified hours in the identified area. Dropping trees after hours or in other locations at the Fairgrounds will be considered illegal dumping and may be subject to a fine. This service is free of charge to local residents.

EVFPD firefighters generally respond to medical calls in their personal vehicles, allowing for a faster response. On other incidents, firefighters respond to a fire station to respond in department apparatus with specialized equipment.

During the week of December 9, the Estes Valley Fire Protection District

(EVFPD) responded to five calls for service. This included: • Motor vehicle crashes: 1 • Emergency medical (assist EPMC): 0 • Smoke/odor investigation: 1 • Alarms: 1 • Assist: 1 • Helicopter Standby: 1

The charge(s) are merely an accusation and the defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.

On December 14 at 10:08 a.m. a 27 year old Estes Park male who was wanted on a warrant went to the police station at 170 MacGregor Ave. and turned himself in. The warrant was from the Colorado State Patrol for care-

less driving and failure to appear. The male was issued a new court date and later released on a PR bond.

On December 14 at 4:13 p.m. police were called to 167 E. Elkhorn Ave. on a report of a person trespassing. On scene they charged a 28 year old transient male with trespassing. He was cited and later released.

Hermit Park Open Space Seasonal Closure Begins December 20th The seasonal closure of Larimer County’s Hermit Park Open Space, located 2 miles southeast of Estes Park, will begin effective Thursday, December 20, 2018.

The last day the public may visit Hermit Park this year is Wednesday, December 19.

Hermit Park will remain closed during the winter months because of wintry

weather conditions and protection of wintering range for big game animals, such as elk. Hermit Park will reopen to the public on March 1, 2019, weather dependent.

It was all because of a mouse, the story goes (or rust, but the nibbling mouse makes a better tale). A mouse chewed up the bellows of the organ in the small St. Nicholas Church in Oberndorf, Austria one winter in 1818, leaving the church with no accompaniment for the carols its members would sing for Christmas.

Two days before the most important holy day of the year, a roving troupe of actors came to Oberndorf to perform the Christmas story, but had to do so without music (oh, that mouse!). After the play, families trundled home to stoke their fires and warm their hands at their hearths before bed. Father Josef Mohr, moved by the tender story of a virgin mother giving birth to a holy infant, didn’t want to break the sacred spell just yet so he walked to the highest point near his church for a few moments of contemplation.

It was a silent night, holy even. All was calm as the stars blazed bright. As Fr. Mohr looked out, he recalled a poem he’d written years ago and wondered if his friend, Franz Gruber, could put it to guitar music so they could have something to sing for their Christmas Eve church service.

Gruber produced. On Christmas Eve, 1818, the small St. Nicolas congregation heard “Stille Nacht! Heilige Nacht” for the first time, sung by Mohr and Gruber with a sole guitar to accompany them..

The organ repairman came a week later, patched up the mouse-induced damage, and heard Mohr test out the mended instrument with his new song.

The repairman was duly impressed, copied the music (no quick or easy task in 1818) and took it back to his own church. There, two performing families heard it, fell in love with it, and added it to their repertoire. In just a couple of years, “Stille Nacht” was part of the European Christmas culture.

“Silent Night” was translated into Eng-

lish in 1863, two decades after the German song had become popular in the United States.

This year marks the 200th anniversary of the birth of “Silent Night, ” the most beloved Christmas carol of all. How much of the story about its origin is true, no one knows. Whether it was a mouse or rust that rendered the organ bellows nonfunctional doesn’t change the significance of the song, which is sung around the globe in 300 different languages.

I hear the carol and get goose bumps because it is so – perfect. With only a guitar to complement the simple words and tune, “Silent Night” brings us back to what Christmas is about in its purest form. That meaning may be different for each of us, but each year it is there for us if we want to accept the gifts the holy day brings forth. No friends or family required, no wrapped presents, no tinseled tree. Sugar cookies are accepted but not expected. Simply put, the joy of Christmas is kindled by whatever brings you closer to your good and true essence— the light that burns within you. (This is what I call God and Christmas is the match that ignites the flame.)

True Christmas is silent. Holy. Calm.

Bright. Tender and mild.

This shift in mindset is difficult but fulfilling if you can get there. Seek the silent night of Christmas as it was 200 years ago, brought forth by a broken organ, a clear winter night and a minister on a hilltop, observing a quiet village below and contemplating the birth of a baby who would grow up to change the world.

Join a beginner 2-hour snowshoe tour with a park ranger on the west side of the park. Reservations are required and may be made no sooner than seven days in advance. Call the Kawuneeche Visitor Center at (970) 627-3471 from 8:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. for reservations.

Please bring your own snowshoes and ski poles with large baskets. Participants must be eight years and older. Program meets at the Kawuneeche Visitor Center.

It is again time to rally together for a new ambulance for Estes Park Health, formerly Estes Park Medical Center, and the Emergency Medical Services Team (EMS). e entire community and all of our visitors count on an ambulance being available when there is a need.

Did you know?

• Five ambulances are in service at all times, answering calls that cover a 1000 square miles. e EMS answer calls from Allenspark, Big Elk Meadows, Estes Park, Glen Haven, Pinewood Springs, and Le Hand Fire District.

• e budget for the ambulance maintenance alone is $52,000.00 annually. Two of the five, ambulances have over 200,000 miles on the odometer.

• 31% of the ambulance calls are for transfer of patients to hospitals out of the Estes Park area.

• e cost of a new fully equipped ambulance will be approximately $230,000.00.

Unlike many places, our ambulances are not supported by tax dollars. e Department of Emergency Services, through Estes Park Health, purchases these ambulances with the help of community funds and money set aside by the medical center for capital purchases. is

Estes Park Museum Friends And Foundation, Inc. Awarded Grant

On November 30, the Estes Park Museum Friends & Foundation, Inc. was awarded a grant from The Greenwood Fund, a donor-advised fund of The Denver Foundation. The Greenwood Fund provides small, annual grants for artifact and collections care purposes for muse-

ums across Colorado and Wyoming with a priority placed on smaller institutions.

The Greenwood Fund awarded just over $1,300 to the Museum Friends and Foundation. The funds will be used to purchase collections care supplies, notably metal-edged, archival boxes. The boxes will be used as long-term storage for artifacts that are moving from an off-site location to the temperature and humiditycontrolled Museum Annex. Curator of Collections, Jessica Michak remarked on the grant, "The funding from the Greenwood Fund will greatly support the collections storage move project currently in progress at the Estes Park Museum.

Through the purchase of supplies the Museum can better preserve and track the collection."

Once the artifacts are properly housed for preservation, they will serve as a wonderful community resource for researchers near and far.

The mission of the Estes Park Museum Friends & Foundation, Inc. is to support the mission of the Estes Park Museum through fundraising, publications, volunteerism, outreach, and special projects and events.

Estes Park Health And EVRPD To Co-Host January 14 Blood Drive

To allow for easier access to give blood, Estes Park Health and Estes Valley Recreation and Park District (EVRPD) have joined together to cohost a blood drive on January 14 in the community rooms at the Estes Valley Community Center from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The UCHealth Garth Englund Blood Center will be overseeing and handling the donation process.

The Estes Valley Community Center provides 1,800 square feet of space for the blood drive, ample parking and easy access for donors. To donate, a person must be at least 18 years old (or 17 with a parent’s permission) and show a photo identification. New donors must weigh at least 120 pounds and be in good health. Prior donors must weigh at least 110 pounds.

If you are interested in setting up an appointment for your donation time, you can call Garth Englund Blood Center at 970-495-8965, or visit Estes Park Health’s Facebook Event page and use the link to set your appointment.

Process for donating blood The donation process takes 30-45 minutes. This includes the time needed to fill out health history and consent forms. The actual drawing of blood – a pint – takes five to 10 minutes.

Before you go to the Community Center, please make sure you’ve eaten something.

When you enter the donation site, staff members will guide you through the process and answer your questions.

If at any time during the donation process you feel light-headed, please tell a staff member.

The entire process takes about 45 minutes. This includes time to complete your health history and sign consent forms.

Among the questions for your health history, you will be asked about medicines that you take. Most medicines are okay.

You will also be asked about behavior that is considered a risk for HIV or hepatitis exposure.

The rest of the process includes having your temperature and blood pressure taken, and a finger-stick test called hematocrit that checks your volume of red blood cells.

Your arm is cleaned with a sterile disinfectant swab. A needle is inserted into a vein on the inside of your elbow.

The actual blood withdrawal takes five to 10 minutes. When you are done, a wrap is put on your arm.

There will be room for you to rest for a short time afterwards and enjoy a snack.

Kachina, Little Kitty & Parakeets Need New Homes For The Holidays

This week there are two beautiful kitties and some pretty parakeets available for adoption.

Kachina is a dilute tortie who is about three years old. She is very loyal and doesn't mind a busy household. She is fine with other cats and dogs but may like to keep all the attention to herself.

She is very playful and adventurous.

Help The Estes Park Pet Association Give Homeless Animals Another Chance

Through the decades The Estes Park Pet Association has been caring for and re-homing the strays and surrendered pets of our community.

Local pets may be surrendered to us when their people become unable to care for them, or sadly, sometimes when an owner has died. In other situations, housing or employment issues, or even a new child in the family may lead to the surrender of pets.

We like to help pets remain with their families, and we donate pet food to Crossroads Ministry to help families with some of those speed bumps that get in the way.

When stray animals cannot be reunited with their owners, their best chance for the future is to end up in the care of The Pet Association. We are this area's only humane society. Larimer County Humane does not provide services outside of the incorporated valley cities.

Additionally, in recent years we have expanded our outreach. We often bring in dogs and cats from high-kill shelters and rescues in parts of the country where they have little or no chance for adoption.

We sometimes rescue animals that are otherwise overlooked because of medical issues or age. We don't feel that

those are reasons to be denied another chance at life and happiness. We want to thank you, our neighbors and supporters, for opening your hearts and homes to them.

Most of the animals that end up in our care need to be spayed or neutered.

Some have medical conditions which must be evaluated and treated. They usually need vaccinations, and many, especially the older ones, need dental care.

All of them must be boarded, and some require longer periods of time for socialization, and to find them the right homes.

Our volunteers spend time, with our shelter animals twice a day, every day, including walking with the dogs twice per day. We want them to be friendly, happy companions when they join their new families.

In 2018, we have adopted out 40 dogs and 53 cats.

The Pet Association relies 100% on donations. Can you help us give homeless animals another chance? Thank you.

Fazeel Bhatti 12th Grade Congratulations to Fazeel Bhatti, the Estes Park News Student of the Week for December 21, 2018.

At Estes Park High School, Fazeel is a member of the FFA, Environmental Club, National Honor Society and on the soccer and basketball teams. He is taking six AP classes this year. He has maintained a 4.0 GPA throughout high school and has earned a total of 23 awards and certificates throughout his high school career.

Outside of school he enjoys trips to Rocky Mountain National Park with his friends and hiking. He likes to joke around, but when it’s time to get something done he will finish that task before he lets himself get distracted.

Fazeel’s favorite quote is “The haters

are like sandpaper, sure they will scratch you and hurt you but in the end, they’re gonna end up useless and you’re gonna end up being polished.”

After high school, Fazeel plans to attend an Ivy League school on a full ride scholarship. He hopes to attend Stanford School of Medicine.

CHRISTMAS NIGHT One of my favorite writers, Max Lucado, inspires me as he talks about Christmas.

I’m sharing some words found in his book: ‘God Came Near’. I hope he inspires you too.

“It’s Christmas night. The house is quiet. The crackle is gone from the fireplace, leaving warm coals to issue a glow in the darkened den. Stockings hang empty from the mantle. The tree stands naked in the corner. Cards, tinsel, and memories remind all of Christmas Day. What a day! Presents, now possessions. “Thank you so much!” “The kids are on the phone!” Picture-taking. Wrapping paper is bagged for the dumpster. Dishes are washed and leftovers will provide the fare for coming days.

It’s Christmas night. Carolers are gone, Manheim Steamroller and other Christmas albums are now stored away having performed their annual choruses about Santa, Rudolph and family. The ‘25-days of Christmas’ shows are stored away until next year.

It’s Christmas night. That thought reminds us that the world has been a little different during these past few days…temporarily transformed. The magic of the season was observed in the lives of humanity ever so briefly, reminding us of what is worth having, what we were intended to be. Gone was our focus on winning, wooing, warring. We stepped off rat-race lives and looked outward toward the Star of Bethlehem.

It’s the season to be jolly because, more than any other time, we think of Him. His name is on our lips. The result? For a few precious hours our heavenly yearnings intermesh and we become a chorus of people who are banking on the Bethlehem story to be a reality.

“Come and behold Him” we sing, pointing others to the Christ-child. For a few precious hours, He is beheld. Christ, the Lord. Many who pass the year without seeing Him, see Him. People who often use His name in vain, pause to use it in praise. Eyes, free of the blindness of self, marvel at His majesty. He’s everywhere. In the grin and tears of policemen who take carloads of presents to the children’s ward at the Hospital. In the twinkle in the eyes of multitudes of soon-to-be travelers as they tell of plans to take that upcoming trip to see family members. In the many families whose eyes glow as they anticipate the arrival of their loved ones from stations oversees. He’s seen in the heart of many who hand out cold baloney sandwiches, or dip hot meals for the homeless, or deliver presents to those families that are less-fortunate than most. And He’s in the solemn silence of shoppers as the strains of ‘Away in the manger’ or ‘Joy to the world’ echo through the mall. Emmanuel. He is with us. God came near.

It’s Christmas night. Soon the cleanup will begin—lights come down, trees thrown out, size 36 exchanged for a size 40, candy and ornaments on sale for half price. Life will be normal again. December’s loving sharing of gifts will become January’s credit card payments and the magic will begin to fade, but for the moment, it is still in the air. We stay awake a little longer on Christmas night, savoring the spirit and hoping that all who ‘beheld Him’ during this special season of the year will do it next week…and continually.

The reason? If He can make such a difference with timid efforts and songs and thoughts directed toward Him in December, how much more could He do if we thought of Him every day throughout the year?” Let’s commit to making it happen!

Joe And Diane Lavaux Are Dancing Up A Storm

Dancing Is Good For The Brain You may know Dr. Joseph Lavaux and his wife Diane as the former owners of the Aspen Eye Center. Joe started seeing patients in Estes Park part time in 1975 and full time in 1994. (Longley Parker took over their business on 9/6/2001).

However, something you may not know is that Joe and Diane absolutely love to dance and started dancing back in grade school. The couple danced a bit more regularly in high school with the popularity of Dick Clark's American Bandstand and, here in Estes Park they were members of the Friday Nighters dance group for many years as well as the Goodtimes Dance Club in Fort Collins.

This active couple has danced the Jitterbug, Square Dance, Waltz, Fox Trot, East Coast and West Coast Swing, Cha Cha Cha, Salsa, Rueda and Bachata.

Diane said, “We have always loved dancing. However, the love of Latin dance and specifically Salsa began with our work in Mexico and Central America where we gave members of the communities we visited free eyecare. The locals shared with us their version of Latin dance as a thank you to us. We fell in love with the people, their culture and specifically their music and dance styles and every time we visited, we absorbed as much as we could from each experience.”

Joe and Diane’s introduction to Casino de Rueda (a Cuban Salsa square dance) was in Auckland, New Zealand in 2005 where Joe taught in the optometry school at the University of Auckland. After learning these dances and discovering how much they loved them, they joined in to dance with the University of Arizona Ritmos Latinos and with the Boulder Rueda group. The couple loves this dance style so much that they

started teaching Salsa, Rueda and Bachata three years ago. They have been teaching at the Agave Room above the Rio restaurant in Fort Collins once a month with Joe also serving as the DJ for the evening and this year they started teaching Rueda in Windsor.

When asked about the attraction to dancing Joe said, “Dancing is not only an enjoyable way to listen to great music but to mentally transfer that energy into our bodies and guide a partner within a community of wonderful people. It is not only a fun, aerobic and social activity, but has been good for keeping our minds sharp and our body movements finely tuned and in balance.”

Studies have shown that dancing has great benefits for the mind and body.

Picking up choreography can seem like a brain teaser. Interpreting which arm, which leg, which direction even, can lead to legs and arms everywhere except for the very position they should be in.

This can be frustrating, but research suggests that learning new steps could prevent dementia. Dancing is also a great way to make friends quickly.

Diane said, “We began to think it would be nice to develop a dance community in Estes Park where we can dance these Latin dances and enjoy a fun time in a way to stay healthy and mentally sharp. In addition, it would be nice to bring something back to Estes Park where many of our eyecare projects began and where our opportunity for Latin dance had its origin.”

Those who find these styles of dance interesting are in luck! Coming in early 2019 Salsa and Bachata dance classes by the Lavauxs will be coming to our new Community Center. Check out these class descriptions, dates and times: Salsa and Bachata Class. Salsa and

Bachata are social dances originating in the Caribbean that are danced by all ages around the world. Modern salsa styles are associated and named to the original geographic areas that developed them.

This class will involve some understanding of the music timing, basic steps, foot patterns, body movement and turn patterns.

Classes will be held at the Community Center, Upper Fitness Room on Saturdays (weekly) beginning in early 2019 from 2:30-3:20 p.m. Fee: $5. Registration deadline: none; drop-in. Instructors: Joe and Diane Lavaux.

Rueda Class. Rueda de Casino is a popular style of salsa where pairs of dancers chorographically dance in a circle with moves called out by a lead dancer. Partners exchange throughout the dance similar to what is often seen in square dancing. The combination of dance patterns, rhythmic movement and

exchange of partners create a lively visual and social dance. It is enjoyed by all age groups around the world. Age: 12 and older. Classes will be held at the Estes Valley Community Center, Upper Fitness Room.

Session 1: Sat. 1/5—1/26; Session 2: Sat. 2/2—2/23 Times: 12-1 p.m. (youth 12-17); 1:152:15 p.m. (adult 18 and older) Fee: $40, registration deadline is January 3. Instructors: Joe and Diane Lavaux.

The Friday Niters Dance Club celebrates 2019 at their New Year's dinner and dance featuring the live music of Harris and Harris on Friday, January 4, 2019 at the Rodeway Inn. All my company has returned to Texas.

While they, Elizabeth, Krisp, Edgar and Almaria were here I really had a great time with them. Krisp is Elizabeth’s boyfriend and Edgar is his brother while Almaria is Edgar’s wife. Have y’all got all that straight? Oh, Elizabeth is my granddaughter. She and Krisp just graduated from medical school and they took a trip up here to visit me and play in the snow.

Edgar had never seen snow. They got a lot of it as first-time skiers. In fact, according to them, they even got to eat some while attempting to ski. Luckily no one got injured and a good time was had by all.

One of my enjoyments in their visit was that they loved my cooking. Almaria even asked for most of my recipes. Feeding young people that also want to be on the go, I had to fix breakfasts that were easy. They really like a casserole I made.

They liked it so much they were happy to finish the left-overs the next day as it made a lot. It may be one you would like to fix Christmas morn or New Year’s Day? It takes a large pan even though the recipe called for a 9 x 13, I had to use a 10 x 15. I guess you could make two casseroles and freeze one.

Egg and Potato Casserole 350 oven 10 x 15 baking pan sprayed with Pam/ or greased w/butter 12 eggs Esther’s dog, Sunshine and their lovely tree adorned with her doll collection.

8 oz. grated cheddar cheese 1-large package of frozen hash browns.

(1 lb.14 oz. is what I used) 1 lb. of ham chopped into small cubes.

I used a large ham steak for this 1 tsp. salt or to taste 1/2 tsp. black pepper 1⁄2 tsp. creole seasonings or some cayenne and added salt In prepared pan mix all ingredients together except the eggs. Beat eggs well and pour over the potato mixture. Bake in pre-heated oven uncovered for one hour. Let rest for 5 minutes and serve.

This reheats beautifully as my guests would testify.

Elizabeth and Lexi did decorate for me and put our all the dolls. I really appreciate all the work and told them so. The problem as y’all know is that I will have the job of taking it all down and putting it away. No matter, I will enjoy it now and worry about the work later.

So far Sunshine has left all the dolls, decorations, and the tree alone except for one little ugly stuffed animal. No matter where I put it under the tree, she finds it and brings it to me. Oh well, we both wish you all the joys and blessings of Christmas.

“The Star Of Wonder” Next Program At EP Memorial Observatory The Estes Valley Astronomical Society (EVAS) in conjunction with The Estes Park Memorial Observatory is offering a free public open house/star night on Saturday, December 22nd, 2018. The goal of EVAS is to promote amateur astronomy and education in the Estes valley.

Our returning speaker for the evening is one of our all-time favorites, John Ensworth and the title of his talk will be “The Star of Wonder”.

The Star of Bethlehem fascinates.

The nature of the star has been lost in history, confused by the passage of time. For millennia, believers, scoffers and the curious have wondered at the Biblical account of the Star. The Bible recounts unusual or even impossible astronomical events at Christ's birth. For many doubters, the account of the Star is easily dismissed as myth. For many believers, it's a mystery accepted on faith.

And yet, the question of the nature of the Star of Bethlehem is of such interest to religion, to history, to science and philosophy, that we really can't dismiss the mystery. Indeed, we can turn to each of these disciplines for assistance in our search for the nature of the star. John will show us the possible origin of this phenomenon using various historical time-lines and current modern day techniques to attempt to solve the mystery.

A Holiday Greeting From The Library Tonight marks that special calendar moment when we nestle in for the longest night of the year. Winter evenings hold their special charm, whether we’re inside the cozy comfort of home or out walking amid the 29,000 feet of multi-colored lights that adorn our town’s center, casting a beautiful and

with hot chocolate and an activity—and a visit to Santa’s workshop just outside the library, led by costumed elves from the Estes Park Newcomers Club.

The Polar Express is just one example of the magic that happens at the library all year. We are happy to be here for you, for our local families, and we look for-

We at the library express our warmest wishes to you. May this season inspire you, in whatever tradition you honor: Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, Solstice, Yuletide, or simply, the Winter Season.

We are grateful for all the opportunities we’ve had to interact with you over the year past. You are our friends and our neighbors, and the joy and satisfaction of doing our job derives from the people we serve.

There are many seasonal traditions at the library. My personal favorite is something that has just experienced its third popular year.

On two evenings every December, the library becomes a magical destination for families to gather for The Polar Express Trolley Ride.

I have the honor of reading aloud this 1985 classic (the book predates the movie) in our Fireplace Corner, as library elves hold up a bigsized storybook for kids to see author Chris Van Allsburg’s beautiful illustrations. For many parents, “The Polar Express” was a childhood favorite they can now share with their kids who are hearing it for the first time.

When Santa in the story asks, “Who will receive the first gift of Christmas? ”there are always eager young faces who can’t resist answering aloud, “Me! ” After the story, everyone gets their ticket to ride the Polar Express around town, in the form of an Estes Park trolley. The conductor (played perfectly by our friend Kent Smith) checks his pocket watch and calls out, “All aboard!”

As Children’s Librarian Melanie Kozlowski reminds us: “Reading together as a family is the ideal antidote to the frenzy and stress that all too often accompany the holidays. At the same time, it exercises the brain, stimulates imagination, and builds vocabulary and background knowledge. ” This season, we thank this great community we call home. More Hints For The Holidays By: Judi Smith

While Chanukah and Bodhi Day have already passed, Christmas celebrations are yet to come! We take advantage of the after Christmas sales to update our lights, purchasing strings of LEDs to replace the powerhungry incandescent Christmas lights of our parents’ generation.

Those old lights then go to the scrap metal recyclers.

According to the Internet, this new technology is 80% more efficient and bulbs will burn 25 times as long. This is a dollar savings as well as good for the Earth.

We do the same thing within our household, consistently replacing expired bulbs (both incandescent and CFL) with LEDs. Similarly, we now buy only rechargeable batteries, mostly AA and AAA for flashlights and remotes. We find this to be much more economical than buying batteries to toss out once used which happens with far too many of the 15 billion batteries in worldwide sales each year. In the same vein, do not forget the timer for the Christmas tree lights, indoors or out, which will save 75% of the energy as well as be fire-safe.

As we clear the bookshelves to make room for Christmas villages, we also take any books we no longer need or want to the library, where volunteers will find them a new home, and we contact the catalog companies to cancel junk mail. In this age of web research, catalogs are superfluous.

Most decorations at our house are handme-downs from the homes of our parents and grandparents, many made by children of various generations. Trash to treasure decorating is part of the Christmas charm. If your children or grandchildren need entertaining during the holiday, try web research on whatever you have on hand, like “Kleenex boxes,” “egg cartons,” or “pine cones.” Remember cut paper snowflakes (made from not-fullyused paper) can still be recycled in the “office paper” bin at the Transfer Station. It even accepts shredded

paper (white or pastel). Old cups, tubs or cans, covered in scrap vinyl (free from Smith Sign Studio) make great pen and pencil holders for desks.

Are you hosting a family party or dinner? Avoid onetime use plastic and paper. If you do not want to use the antique china, pick up a holiday set at the thrift shop. Another alternative: inexpensive, lightweight and unbreakable, reusable plastic plates, cups and bowls work well to replace paper, at home or for buffet parties elsewhere, since they can be transported in your reusable shopping bag.

Since we do not want to overload the sanitation department with food down the garbage disposal, we must think ahead to sharing, freezing and planning the use of leftovers. To this end, encourage your guests to bring “take-out” boxes to share dinner leftovers. Before the holiday, we wash and keep such common items as butter and cottage cheese tubs or those from deli-ham.

These make great “doggie bags” for any event, even dinner at a local restaurant.

This will be highlighted with an inspirational message delivered by SMLC’s pastor, the Reverend Ron Bockhaus, and the carols sung by anyone at all who has a voice joyfully to praise God for his love: “For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten son…” Lutherans love to sing; so please join them as they sing together as many carols as possible in just one hour and, especially, as the service concludes in the darkness with each singer focusing on the lighted space around his or her own little candle while singing the beloved “Silent night, holy Amy and Ryan Schwarts on Christmas Eve night. James Crain James Clifton Crain of Roxborough Park, and former resident of Estes Park, passed away the morning of December 9th, surrounded by his family. Jim was born January 23, 1946 to Evelyn McDonald Crain, a nurse, and Clifton Elmo Crain, a railroad engineer, in Albuquerque, New Mexico. He was raised by his parents in Winslow, Arizona and by his grandparents and aunts and uncles in Boone, Iowa. Jim graduated from Ames High School in 1964 and attended and graduated from Iowa State University in 1968 with a degree in History and a minor in Political Science and a minor in Economics. Jim met the love of his life, Carol Cage at Iowa State University, a “cute blonde” who at the time worked for one of his professors. He told her after three dates they would marry (she thought he was nuts). The two married nine months later in 1968 just before joining the Peace Corps.

During their time in the Peace Corps, Jim and Carol worked in San Felipe and Quetzaltenango, Guatemala where Carol taught public health and Jim managed the “School to School” program, which, through a combination of in-kind donations and sweat equity, built 13 primary schools in those rural communities. Before leaving the program, Jim also developed a pathway for funding that helped build 30 additional schools that has had a lasting legacy on several generations of students in the area. Jim and Carol returned to the United States in 1971 with one of their greatest gifts, their daughter, Patti. After the Peace Corps, Jim attended the University of New Mexico and graduated in 1972 with a master’s degree in Public Administration. It is there he began his life as a public servant.

Early in his career, preservation of land was Jim’s primary goal. His value of natural spaces and good stewardship of the environment stemmed from the very holistic way his grandparents farmed in Iowa. They viewed themselves as stewards of the land, not owners. Jim began his career with the City of Albuquerque in 1972 where he purchased land for open space, easements and parks. In 1977 the family moved to Colorado where Jim took a similar position for the City of Lakewood. In 1979, Jim was named the Open Space Director for the City of Boulder, a position he held for 23 years. During his tenure in Boulder, he and his team increased the number of acres of protected land from 9,200 to 34,100 for public use; to preserve and restore habitat for wildlife and native

plant species, and to preserve land and water resources. He grew the department from a staff of 4 to 75 and helped develop the funding to preserve open land around Boulder for generations to come.

Boulder’s iconic landscape would not be what it is today without his efforts. Jim’s legacy to the community will be enjoyed for generations.

As an example of Jim’s work, and recognition by the community, a plaque commemorating Jim’s contribution to land conservation efforts in Boulder County was erected and states, “Jim Crain, as director of the City of Boulder Open Space and Mountain Parks Department from 1979-2002, worked to preserve the natural history and scenic beauty of the mountains and plains of Colorado’s Front Range. The land in front of you – the Coal Creek Drainage, the high plains grasslands and the Front Range foothills – are a lasting legacy of the contributions made by Jim Crain to protecting undeveloped open space as an inheritance for future generations.”

Jim also worked to preserve land in the Estes Park Valley. He helped found the Estes Valley Land Trust in 1987 and worked with his colleagues to obtain easements and preserve habitat in the community of Estes Park.

Jim received many awards during his career, including the 1992 Niwot Award, 2000 and 2001 Colorado Coalition of Land Trusts Award of Excellence, 2002 Land Conservation Award from Boulder County and the Blue Grama Award from the Colorado Open Space Alliance for "Outstanding Individual Achievement" in 2007.

Jim loved nature, history, politics and people and was known as good friend to many. Most of all, Jim loved his family. He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Carol; daughters Patti Crain Lorman and Amy Crain; granddaughters Robin Chadwick, Reese Chadwick and Sophia Lorman; and sister Jean Hutchings. He is preceded in death by his parents.

Jim was adored by his family who will miss his hugs, cooking, sage advice and most of all his unconditional love.

Services will be held at the Boulder Public Library, Canyon Theatre, on Saturday Dec. 22nd at 11 a.m. Space for the service is limited. An open house with light refreshments will follow from 12 p.m. to 2 p.m. at the St. Julien Hotel (across from the library) for all who would like to celebrate Jim’s life.

John Miller John David Miller (86) died on December 17, 2018 in Estes Park, CO. John was born September 23, 1932 to Lewis and Emma Miller in Springfield, IL. In High School John enjoyed swimming, then later in life he enjoyed tennis and bicycling, walking around Pole Hill area and hiking including climbing Longs Peak several times and ran a marathon in Palo Duro Canyon, TX. John served in the Army from 1953 to 1955. In 1956 John met his future wife, Helen, in Estes Park at the Rock Inn and they were married on August 31, 1957 in Fargo, ND. He received a Bachelor’s degree from Eastern IL. Charleston, a Masters from Iowa State Ames and a PHD from Indiana University in Bloomington in Mathematics.

John became a mathematics professor in 1963 at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville worked there until 1968

and went to Texas Tech and worked until retirement in 1996. John and Helen then moved to Estes Park to retire in 1996.

He is preceded in death by his parents and one brother Bob. John is survived by his wife Helen, two brothers Larry of TN and Lonnie of IL, two sons Sean Miller (Diane) of Lakewood, CO and Kurt Miller of Denver, CO, one daughter Melinda Miller (Chris Diebold) of Denver, CO and two grandchildren Harper and Rowan Stoeckle.

A private family service will be held at a later time. In lieu of flowers the family would ask for memorial contributions be made to the Estes Park Library Foundation in care of Allnutt Funeral Service 1302 Graves Ave. Estes Park, CO 80517.
