Comments Concerning COVID-19 From: Wendy Koenig, Mayor Estes Park “As a former and longtime small business owner in Estes Park, I’m acutely aware and deeply concerned about the negative effects COVID-19 is having on the lives and livelihoods of the owners, workers and patrons of local bars, businesses, cafes, restaurants, salons, shops, stores, theatres and other establishments.

As a mother, wife, neighbor and friend I’m equally aware and concerned that the number of virus cases among our townspeople is bad and getting worse. Supporting our businesses and keeping people safe and healthy, is a top priority of mine.”

“Curtailing the spread and terrible toll of COVID-19 involves national initiatives, state policies and regulations, county co-

ordination and enforcement, and town implementation. It’s a jigsaw puzzle of efforts. No puzzle piece is a silver-bulletcure. All pieces involve individual sacrifice. Some require more sacrifice by some individuals than others. As I see it, people here can either stand alone as pieces, or stand together as a town to solve the puzzle. I say let’s stand together.”

When in place, Level Up will afford small businesses with safe practices in place an exception from the Level Red restrictions of the county. Diversity Of Thought Makes Estes Park Strong By: Wendy Koenig, Mayor of Estes Park

None of us is as good as all of us. This is the principle that Ray Kroc employed while making MacDonald’s the most successful fast food corporation in the world. The all-of-us principle reflects an understanding that we are only as good as the people with whom we work and our respective capacities for getting the most from those people.

To understand how this works in Estes Park, consider your Town Board.

Each member, whether trustee or mayor regularly engages with the townspeople of Estes Park via phone, email, social media, formal or informal virtual meetings, participation in gatherings of organizations, and so on.

Afterwards, each person synthesizes what was said or done during the engagement, then stores it away for future use.

Later, most likely during a meeting or study session of the town board, the trustee or I will share our information with other trustees who then will do the same thing with their information.

This much repeated process is fueled by a heartfelt desire by trustees and me to represent the needs and interests of the people who live and work in our unique mountain community.

The output of the process—perhaps a policy, priority, program, proclamation and so on— is best understood as a genuine expression of diversity of thought, one that honors the diverse needs and desires of the townspeople.

Moreover, the combination of direct and indirect input from the townspeople defines their common good.

Subsequently, the common good is codified in the details of the strategic plan and annual budget of the Town.

The latter provides funds for meeting the diverse needs that comprise the common good of Estes, including infrastructure, events, childcare, housing, downtown development upgrades, transportation, environment, and trails. The budget also funds necessary coordination for keeping people safe at the events held here as well making sure events have the desired economic impact by enabling collaboration between the Economic Development Corporation, Visit Estes Park, Chamber of Commerce, and so on.

Several ebbs and flows affect the policymaking of your town and trustees.

Some ebbs are seasonal—very active spring, summer, fall seasons, followed by a quieter winter. They, in turn, affect the flow of income, family dynamics, tourism, traffic and the revenues of the town.

Each flow and every ebb, including those of the current pandemic, must be factored into the Town’s plans, a task that’s recently been more challenging than normal. As local businesses struggle to stay afloat due to Larimer County and Colorado restrictions that change when COVID- 19 alert levels rise. Town Administrator Machalek is in regular contact with Larimer County officials, regarding regulations and case counts. He conveys that information to business community leaders, trustees and me.

In the ebbs and flows of these times, we mustn’t forget each of us has a role to play. And when we each play our respective role well—through diverse thoughts and needs—then, we become Estes strong.

Cowboy Brad Fitch Honored With Mayoral Proclamation At the Estes Park Town Board meeting this week, Mayor Wendy Koenig and Town Board members recognized Cowboy Brad Fitch for all he has done for our community.

The proclamation read as follows: WHEREAS, Bradley Fitch Smith, aka, “Cowboy Brad Brad Fitch Fitch,” a native of Estes Park; earned his degree at the University of Colorado Boulder, served as a Commissioned Officer in the U.S. Coast Guard, and has worked at numerous local entities including the YMCA of the Rockies and Rocky Mountain National Park; and WHEREAS, since 1976, Brad Fitch has entertained Estes Park residents, visitors, and U.S Presidents as a guitarist, vocalist and composer, specializing in cowboy tunes and the songs of John Denver, for which he is best known; Brad Fitch has recorded 23 albums, and was commissioned to write and perform the official song for the Rocky Mountain National Park Centennial in 2015; and WHEREAS, Brad Fitch repeatedly plays

300 concerts annually, many for nonprofit community charities, and has been recognized for his musical achievements including being awarded “Cowboy Entertainer of the Year,” named Estes Park’s “Most Interesting Person” of 2020, and the Outstanding Community Service award in 2006 by the Estes Park Sunrise Rotary; and WHEREAS, Brad Fitch has continued his musical legacy as a founding member of Estes Park’s “The Elktones,” “Fitch and Chips,”and “Siblings Rivalry” with his sister, brother and nephew; and every year participates in the “Catch the Glow” parade and each summer, performs “Cowboy Sing Along” on Sunday and Monday evenings at Bond Park for vacationers and residents alike, and is considered a “Living Legend” in Estes Park for all that he does for the Town.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Mayor and the Trustees of the Town of Estes Park do hereby recognize, Brad Fitch.

And do herby find it an honor and distinct pleasure to present this Proclamation in recognition of his many contributions and the joy he has brought to the Town of Estes Park.

Salvation Army Bell Ringing Resumes The Salvation Army red kettles return to Estes Park this Saturday, December 12th, after a two-week break and there are major changes. Usually, we had kettles and their volunteer attendants at both doors of Safeway and at the Estes Park Post Office. Safeway is only using one door at present and the manager of Dollar General has agreed to let us ring there instead of at the post office.

The best news for some of us is that Dollar General has a small entry area that we can use when the weather is cold. Can’t stand for an two hours? We will also have a chair at Dollar General if you need to sit down. Or you can share a two-hour shift with other people.

COVID precautions will be in place.

Please sit or stand six feet from the kettle and always wear a mask. The kettles and the bells will be sanitized when we

change shifts.

Ninety-percent of the money raised here, stays here. We send ten percent to the Denver District and this year they have been sending money back to us from a special COVID fund. They have been paying for all of the food bank bills for Crossroads since mid-summer.

Estes Chamber Scavenger Hunt Drives Local Business Fun for residents and Front Range visitors The Estes Chamber of Commerce launched a scavenger hunt on Black Friday to encourage visitors and residents to shop local for the holidays. Every Monday we have a raffle drawing for a range of prizes donated by our participating business, which are listed at https://esteschamber.org/scavengerhunt.

“Every purchase we make from a local business is a vote for the survival of our economy,” said Chamber Executive Director Donna Carlson. “We’re doing everything we can to be safe and to let our neighboring communities know that even though we’re at Level Red, the mandate was written to allow us to support commerce.”

The scavenger hunt includes 35 businesses across town. While the initiative is created to stimulate shopping across town, participants do not have to enter the store to play.

The response has been encouraging: "We had fun pursuing the scavenger hunt and found a few businesses we didn’t know about. Thanks for the fun!"

"My family and I came up on Friday night and did your scavenger hunt and it was a blast! Thank you for a fun time!"

Support The Estes Park Women’s Monument Project In Downtown Estes Park Let’s all get behind the Estes Park Women’s Monument project Well, Estes Park, it’s been a tough year for all of us. Most of us are ready for 2020 to be over and to work on a positive and brighter future as we move into 2021. There is a project that fits this bill and that is ready for your enthusiastic support. What is this positive and forward looking project? It’s the Estes Park Women’s Monument project. This grassroots, community-based project will create and install a monument in downtown Estes Park that will honor the incredible accomplishments and contributions of the Women of Estes Park. The monument will include a centerpiece sculpture of Eleanor Hondius and her awesome story along with the stories of multiple other historical Women of Estes Park. It will be multigenerational and multiethnic. This monument will be beautiful, very educational and is something that we will all be proud of. Projects like this are unique in the United States, as there are few monuments that are devoted specifically to Women anywhere in our country. The public fundraising efforts for the Estes Park Women’s Monument project are underway. Supporting this project is a way to be a part of something very positive for our future during this difficult time. Basic project information and a link to a

This is an exciting local grassroots project and it is fully supported by the Estes Park Town Council and the Estes Park Parks Advisory Board. Let’s talk rock stars. In the ’50s it was Elvis. The ’60s brought Jimi Hendrix.

Along came Elton John in the ’70s and Michael Jackson in the ’80s. The ’90s were marked by a woman: Celine Dion, and from there, I don’t know because I got too old to listen to pop music. But I’m not too old to know about a rock star of the 19th century who never sold a single record; a celebrity of highest esteem: Ludwig van Beethoven. This guy rocked the world of music in his time, and still does today. His 250th birthday is December 17.

Beethoven was the superstar of his day, a beloved celebrity idolized on the streets of Vienna. He came from a long line of musicians—his grandfather (also Ludwig van Beethoven) was a pre-eminent musician in Bonn, Germany, where our Ludwig was born. Beethoven’s father was also a musician but never attained the prominence of the grandfather. Due to his disappointment, Ludwig’s father became an alcoholic who castigated his son. He made Ludwig, even at a very young age, practice continuously, sometimes through the night, in hopes of capitalizing on his precocious music gifts.

Beethoven’s first public performance, promoted by his father, was when he was only seven years old. The cruelty of his father contributed to Beethoven’s wellknown abrasive personality, but his upbraiding also contributed to Beethoven being one of the finest pianists of his time.

Beethoven composed his first piece at the age of 12. When he was 17 he traveled to Vienna—the music capital of the world—and played for Mozart. After hearing him, Mozart exclaimed, “Holy mackerel, that guy can really tickle the keys! ” Or he may have said, "Mark that young man, he will make a name for himself in the world. ” Mozart knew his stuff. Five years later Beethoven moved to Vienna for good, where he spent his life composing 722 musical pieces including nine symphonies, 32 piano sonatas, five piano concertos, and many chamber works including some groundbreaking string quartets. (You read it right. String quartets that were groundbreaking. Think of it!)

His most familiar pieces include his 5th Symphony, with probably the most recognizable four notes in the entire classical music repertoire. (Three of the same note, then down a third: Bahm— Bahm—Bahm BAAAHM.) Also, his Piano Sonata #14, known as the hauntingly beautiful Moonlight Sonata, and his 9th Symphony, his last and some think the greatest symphony composed by anyone of any age, with the popular Ode to Joy theme in the fourth movement.

(Beethoven was the first composer to include vocals in a symphony, which is part of the reason the 9th was considered remarkable. Writing a symphony with lyrics pushed the envelope (not a 19th century phrase). Imagine what Beethoven would think of rap music today!)

Another beloved Beethoven piano piece that even novice piano players like me can play is Für Elise (it’s the piece Schroeder keeps returning to during the play rehearsal while Snoopy dances on

the piano in “A Charlie Brown Christmas”). Für Elise wasn’t discovered until forty years after Beethoven’s death. (Oh, to be the finder of such a treasure!) It is not known for sure which Elise it may have been composed for, as there were three Elises who were a part of his life. In 1810, the year written on the original score, he proposed marriage to one of his students, Elise, so she was most likely the object of his famous Für Elise. She turned him down. (I bet he wrote the piece before she turned him down. If he’d written it afterward, it would be gloomy, dark music written in a minor key and Snoopy would not be dancing.)

Even before 1800, Beethoven began to show symptoms of the great tragedy of his life, which was the gradual and eventual total loss of his hearing. It was unfortunate and ironic that one of the greatest geniuses of music the world has ever known lost his ability to hear music!

(Think of the ear worms the man must have heard in his head! We know of them because there are museums today that exhibit wallpaper samples with his music notes scribbled on them. Like all ear worms, those in Beethoven’s head played repeatedly until he could write them down. He did so on whatever he could find to write on.)

By 1819 he was completely deaf, yet some of his best-known works were composed after he lost his hearing, such as his 9th Symphony. He never heard a note of it performed even though many musicologists consider it to be one of the supreme achievements in the history of music.

It’s been speculated that the deafness could have been caused by syphilis, typhus or lead poisoning. Since his deafness only got worse and was incurable, Beethoven became quite despondent to the point where he contemplated suicide, yet he was driven to overcome his physical and emotional ailments to complete his artistic destiny.

In 1824 Beethoven himself conducted the premiere performance of his 9th Symphony. He was totally deaf so another conductor stood in the conductor’s pit unseen by the audience. At the end of the stirring performance when the last note was cut off, Beethoven could not hear and kept conducting until a soloist touched him on his arm. He was embarrassed but as he turned around he could see, though not hear, the standing ovation of the crowd.

Ludwig van Beethoven died of pneumonia at the age of 56 in 1827. It was such a big event that twenty thousand Viennese citizens lined the city streets as his funeral cortege passed by.

Beethoven was a rock star of his time and still is today among classical music fans. Happy birthday, Mr. Beethoven!

Sunday Quaker Meeting To Discuss Snyder’s Book, “On Tyranny” Every Sunday there is a Zoom meeting of intellectually curious people; many are either Quakers, Unitarians or unaffiliated. Currently, they are discussing a book by Timothy Snyder written in 2017 entitled, “On Tyranny.”

Dr Snyder is a Yale professor who describes 20 characteristics of tyranny using the example of the Nazi regime under Hitler.

us. Another family from Longmont had noticed a raccoon with her neck and part of her head stuck in a large PVC pipe. As this juvenile grew, the pipe got tighter. The family called Animal Control, and together they were able to capture this raccoon and bring her to Greenwood. Given she was healthy and feisty, our staff sedated her, then snipped off the pipe. Thankfully, when they checked beneath her fur, they saw no injuries. She stayed with us for only a day, then waddled blithely back into the wild.

Like this grebe and this raccoon, some patient stays at Greenwood are very short. Others are months on end. None of this would be possible without you!

Beyond the rescuers who bring animals to us, community support enables us to offer an amazing level of care to our wild friends. Nourishing Network’s Final Week The Nourishing Network program started on October 7, what seems like eons ago! This program has jumped over fires, through COVID outbreaks, and endured heavy winds (that keep changing direction). The program is winding down this week with our final meal days.

If you have not gotten Nourishing food and resources from the Nourishing Network, be sure to visit this week; it is free, tasty, and you should try it!

This grant has allowed us to work with partners such as the Housing Authority, the American Legion, restaurants, food trucks, bakers and more to create nourishing food and bring it to Townies in need. And who exactly is in need? Some people are in need for financial reasons, some have mobility issues, some could use a step up and out of the stress of “What’s for Dinner?” Who is in need is changing and the pool of people that could use some support is growing.

The Nourishing Network was developed as a response to food insecurity, but food is only the gateway to connect our community members to services they may not know about or be able to access. We want to nourish our community past dinner. We want to be sure they know how and where to get signed up for health insurance, how to access rent assistance, who is hosting grief counseling, and so much more.

We are grateful to all the partners and volunteers who have made this program shine. We are grateful to all the Townies that have taken advantage of this program, whether it allowed them to meet up with a friend in a parking lot or to find a solution for a dire situation. The Nourishing Network has been a wonderful way to experience the generosity that

exists in Estes Park and it has activated the strong network of social services that serve this community.

This program has provided over 2200 dinners, paid for from various restaurants and food trucks; 1300 breakfast burritos with yogurt, fruit and juice; and over 2000 soup and salad meals. Thank you!

The last Falcon Ridge breakfast is December 12, 8-9 a.m. at 1629 Soaring Circle. The last Monday Soup and Salad is December 14th at the American Legion, noon-1 p.m. The Last Wednesday night dinner is December 16th at the American Legion, 4:30-6 p.m. Grab-and-Go food (and any leftovers from other meals) are available at the American Legion on any day except Friday from 4-6 p.m. Please eat!

Nonprofit and community partners will continue to work to meet the needs of the Estes Park community. Although this program is closing, you can still find food and resources through the existing network in this town: find food support through the Community Cafe and Crossroads (both their food bank and Meals on Wheels program). If you can, please support local restaurants, there are often deals posted on the Estes Park Eats and Drinks facebook page (@esteseatsdrinks). Find social services support through any of your local nonprofits, they are doing an amazing job of amplifying their services to meet the ongoing and changing needs of our community. EPNRC will continue to maintain connections between the nonprofit, Town, and business communities in effort to make the greatest collective impact.

were fortunate to receive such a generous gift on behalf of our community to help meet the increased (and ongoing) demand for food assistance and a helping hand at meal time.

Crossroads Doubling Donations

If there was ever a good time to be generous in giving, this is the year! More than ever before people who have never had to ask for help are struggling to sustain housing and have enough money to buy necessary food items to feed their families.

In November, we finished the month with $41,170 going towards rent assistance and 21,680 pounds of groceries going out the door to feed families. Our Thanksgiving Blessing food distribution gave out 7,440 pounds of groceries to 221 families who were overjoyed to receive them. The needs have been incredible, but so have our donors who have given to meet the needs. Thank you if you’ve been

giving to support the work we’re doing!

We really appreciate your partnership in taking care of our neighbors.

Five Fun Facts About…The American Dipper By: Dawn Wilson

This week’s featured animal is the American dipper. These fun little birds are a permanent resident of Estes Valley and Rocky Mountain National Park. They do not migrate but rather stay near fast-flowing streams that remain unfrozen.

• The American Dipper is North America’s only aquatic songbird.

• This medium-sized gray songbird with white eyelids can be identified along a stream, creek or river by its

distinct bob or “dip” of its body as it stands on rocks, logs or other protrusions in a waterway to search for food.

• As an aquatic bird described as a trout with feathers, these birds can dive up to 20 feet in water and walk along river bottoms to find food. Food preferences include aquatic insects (adult and larvae of caddisflies, mayflies, beetles, bugs and mosquitoes), some worms and snails, fish eggs and very small fish.

• Dippers have unique adaptations

for its aquatic feeding grounds, especially to swim in cold water during winter and at higher mountain elevations. These adaptations include slow metabolism, abundant feathers, and the ability to carry extra oxygen in their blood. They also have a nasal flap so they can close their nostrils under water and extra eyelids, called nictitating membranes, to help see under water.

• American Dippers used to be called water ouzels. (Yes, that is the origin of

the name for Ouzel Lake, Ouzel Falls and Ouzel Creek in Rocky Mountain National Park.)

Dippers are the only aquatic songbird in North America. They can be found along creeks, streams and rivers throughout Colorado where they "dip" up and down on rocks and logs searching for food.

Colorado Nature Photographer Gives The Gift Of Thanks For First Responders Estes Park resident Dawn Wilson announced today the launch of a new project to thank first responders, frontline healthcare workers and firefighters who have battled a deadly virus and historic wildfires in 2020.

She will deliver 350 cards featuring her award-winning images of Colorado wildlife and landscapes to those who have fought on the frontlines of these battles to help spread a little cheer and smiles through nature photography.

She is also launching a campaign to raise more funds to reach her goal of delivering at least 750 cards in December to say, “thank you for the dedication and determination.”

“People often tell me they enjoy seeing my daily posts of wildlife photos on social media because it gives them a little hope and makes them smile each day,” said Wilson. “My goal with this project is to do the same for first responders who have helped save my hometown of Estes Park from the massive East Thompson and Cameron Peak wildfires as well as help friends overcome coronavirus.”

Ms. Wilson established a Kickstarter campaign to raise an additional $2,500

to print and deliver at least another 400 cards. Red River Paper, a Dallas, Texas based paper manufacturer, has also donated a portion of the

cards and envelopes used in this project.

The first 350 cards covered the first responders in the Estes Park area. Ms. Wilson established the funding campaign to expand the project to more towns in Colorado.

Research shows that looking at images of nature can reduce stress. A 2015 study conducted in the Netherlands and published in the International Journal of Environment, Research and Public Health, found that looking at nature im-

ages, even for just a few minutes, helped people recover from stress.

Each hand-printed card is produced in Estes Park and features a winter photo of an animal found in Colorado or a landscape image from the Centennial State. There is also a thank you note inside of each card emphasizing the importance of the work these

people do each day.

“Although I don’t anticipate these cards will solve the challenges we are facing in 2020, I hope they will help the first responders smile a bit and maybe reduce their stress for at least a few moments,” said Wilson. “And I hope my friends and

family will understand that the cards they would normally receive for Christmas are going to this important group.”

Precautions will be taken while delivering the cards to hospitals, fire and police departments, and other frontline locations. These measures include wearing masks during delivery, maintaining a six-foot distance from other people, using hand sanitizer between each visit, and holding printed cards aside for 24 hours before delivery.

WHAT’S YOUR ‘LOVE LANGUAGE’ AT CHRISTMAS TIME? A counselor, Gary Chapman, has given us an excellent book entitled ‘The Five Love Languages’. In it he stresses that each of us have a ‘love language’ that we use to show love to others…and to determine their love for us. See if you can pick the ’language’ that you ‘speak’! They are: ‘Affirming Words’, Meaningful Touch’, ‘Acts of Service’, ‘Giving Gifts’, and ‘Quality Time’. One of these probably stands out as you think of how you typically show your love towards other people.

This may become increasingly clear as you show your love for others during this Christmas Season.

‘Affirming Words’ ‘language’ people have had greater opportunities to show love during these times because of family isolations and limited access to outside activities. However, that does not necessarily mean that such time will be utilized, unless we choose to take advantage of it. We all know that many things get in the way of sharing and visiting with family members: alcohol and drug use, work, and ‘too much time together’, can cause this precious time to be wasted. “Talk to me!” and “Listen to me!” are often heard coming from the mouths of people who hunger for this ‘love language’.

‘Meaningful Touch’ is a ‘language’ that many use to show feelings of love and friendship.

These are the ‘huggers’, the ‘hand shakers’, the ‘gimme a fist bump’, people among us. For them the past year has been very difficult because they have been unable to visit people they care about, let alone touch them when together. This has been exceedingly hard for people hospitalized for the virus and kept isolated from their ‘huggers’. So this will be one language that will be less utilized during this Christmas season. All of us, but especially those for whom it is their ‘language’ will feel deeply saddened and restricted in our and others’ showing of love these next few weeks.

The ‘Acts of Service’ ‘language’ people are finding many ways to ‘speak’ at this time of year…as they did all year long. Many of these are our ‘first responders’. However, they have been joined by an army of volunteers who rush to show their ‘love’ by putting together and delivering meals, checking on ‘at-risk’ neighbors, and generally making themselves available to serve. Most of these are doing what they do all year long, because it is their chosen way of showing their love. I recently quoted these words: “Let us not love in word and tongue, but in deed and truth.” These are ‘Everyday Heroes’.

The ‘Giving Gifts’ ‘love language’ people are already busy taking advantage of the ‘before Christmas’ specials, to get those gifts that will best show their love for their children and others on their list. For a great many people this is the way that they ‘measure’ the love that the gift-givers have toward them. However, ‘gifts’ must be accompanied by other ‘languages. A child, being visited by soon-to-be adoptive parents, was told of many things he would get in his new home. He thought about the love he felt in his foster home and replied, “If that’s all I’m gonna get, I’d rather stay here!”

Things… gifts…aren’t everything. Be sure other ‘love languages’ are being spoken, too.

The ‘Quality Time’ ‘love language’ people show their love by spending time with people they love. It is one of the most unrecognized of the languages because many people think that you have to ‘do’ or ‘give’ or ‘serve’ if people are going to know that you love them. A young man whose father had passed away, was asked who had shown up at his house after the service’ to show their support. He said, “The one I remember most was a man who just came and quietly sat with me for a long time, his hat in his hand. Finally, he got up, put his hand on my shoulder and said, ‘Your Dad was a great man!’ and left.” He said, “I will never forget that man!” ‘Time’ is a great ‘language of love’ and, if failed to be ‘spoken, may leave all the other ‘languages’ less meaningful.

Whatever your ‘love language’ be sure to ‘speak’ it often this season. Don’t worry about it being the ‘right’ language, let it be the one you feel most drawn to express. Don’t be like the man who criticized someone for ‘speaking’ their ‘love language’. He was asked, “How do you use YOUR ‘love language’?” He thought a moment and said, “I guess I don’t!” His questioner said: “Then I like the way I ‘speak’ mine, better than the way that you don’t ‘speak’ yours. Christmas is all about love.

Let it be shown.

The Estes Park Equestrian Club (EPEC) celebrates this holiday season by giving a donation of $600 to Crossroads Ministry and $1,000 to the Glen Haven Area Volunteer Fire Department in appreciation for all they have done this challenging year. One thousand dollars was raised by the club at its annual Gymkhana and the additional $600 was donated anonymously.

The mission of Crossroads Ministry “is to serve residents in need, including the temporarily unemployed who receive short-term assistance, and the working poor or persons with low fixed incomes who receive ongoing services.

I have not done any Christmas decorating yet. I dread dragging the tree and ornaments down from the attic. This is the first year I have felt this way. Guess it goes along with the rest of the year. Last year I had everything decorated, left, and went to Houston for New Year’s Eve. Breaking my kneecap and staying in Houston for three months kind of put a damper on taking them down. Marie and Nathan put them away in March, right before I came home. I really appreciated that as I sure could not go up and down the steps.

I have a confession to make. I went to Houston for Thanksgiving. I am now out of quarantine and feel simply great. I know most of you were not able to be with loved ones for Thanksgiving, so I hesitate to tell you of my escapade. I flew on Southwest and wore a mask and face shield. I felt and was very safe. I told my doctor what I was going to do, and she advised the face shield but still had trepidations. I am glad I did it and had a wonderful time. Enough said.

Now that all the turkey and trimmings are eaten, and the pounds gained, most of us are frantically shopping and hoping to find just the right gifts for our loved ones. Take my advice, we are knocking ourselves out in vain. Does that sound cynical? My attitude comes from years of experience. I love giving to babies and youngsters, even teenagers. Adults can

be a problem when it comes to gift giving.

But I kept trying. I am a problem for my adult family as well, Jingle Bells, Jingle Bells. Even with all my griping I love Christmas, the merriment, color, birth of our Lord, all the silliness, and frivolity of the season. I am still trying to find those perfect gifts! I am really looking forward the New Year. Let us get 2020 over.

Thought I would give y’all an amazingly simple desert recipe this week. We are too busy to do anything involved, right? This is a recipe I used to make in our early years of marriage. You can guess how old it is. I have adjusted it for the altitude in Estes.

Consider These Year-End Financial Moves We’re nearing the end of 2020 – and for many of us, it will be a relief to turn the calendar page on this challenging year.

However, we’ve still got a few weeks left, which means you have time to make some year-end financial moves that may work in your favor.

Here are a few suggestions: • Add to your IRA. For the 2020 tax year, you can put in up to $6,000 to your traditional or Roth IRA, or $7,000 if you’re 50 or older. If you haven’t reached this limit, consider adding some money.

You actually have until April 15, 2021, to contribute to your IRA for 2020, but the sooner you put the money in, the quicker it can go to work for you. Plus, if you have to pay taxes in April, you’ll be less likely to contribute to your IRA then.

• Make an extra 401(k) payment. If it’s allowed by your employer, put in a little extra to your 401(k) or similar retirement plan. And if your salary goes up next year, increase your regular contributions.

• See your tax advisor. It’s possible that you could improve your tax situation by making some investment-related moves.

For example, if you sold some investments whose value has increased, you could incur capital gains taxes. To offset these gains, you could sell other investments that have lost value, assuming these investments are no longer essential to your financial strategy. Your tax advisor can evaluate this type of move, along with others, to determine those that may be appropriate for your situation.

Rotary Club Of Estes Park Welcomes Michelle Mann As New Member The Rotary Club of Estes Park is excited to welcome Michelle Mann as a new active member of an international group of people who want to give back to their communities. Her sponsor is Ron Gordon, International Service Director.

Michelle joined the Rotary Club of Estes Park in September after meeting club members and learning of Rotary’s purpose during her husband Doug’s time as club president. She especially appreciates the passion and commitment of Estes Park Rotary members to make our world a better place.

A long-time international service provider, Michelle is excited to experience first-hand the generosity and partnership of the club with one of her favorite charities, Nehemiah Gateway.

Estes Valley Sunrise Rotaty To Participate In The Fourteener’s Project

Estes Valley Sunrise Rotary (EVSR) has been pleased to partner with ShelterBox USA, a global organization dedicated to the vision of a world where no family is without shelter after disaster, since 2018. Through Sunrise Rotary annual donations as well as ShelterBox USA presence at Autumn Gold in 2018 and 2019, this partnership has been a focus for Sunrise Ro-

peaks with the iconic ShelterBox in tow in order to raise awareness of, and funding for, ShelterBox. Following a presentation to Sunrise Rotary, the club’s International Committee and membership as well as member Mark Holdt and Thrivent, sponsored two of the fourteeners peaks, Longs Peak and Maroon Peak, in support of ShelterBox.

This year our Spirit of Rotary honors Jennifer Comstock. Jennifer is a terrific example of “Service above Self “with her participation in all our projects this past year. She is now serving as Rotary Secretary, a much-appreciated commitment.

We are indeed thankful to have Jennifer share her enthusiasm, gifts, and time to the service of our community and club especially through this challenging year that we all have faced. She has helped hold us together through this time!

Karen Thompson: Distinguished Service Presented by Madison Casey Karen led the Fund Development Committee for four years. Major achievements during her time at the helm are development of the Friendship Card and chairmanship of the Duck Race during this daunting year.

When the local community discount Rocky Card was discontinued, Rotary picked up this project. Karen re-invented it as a fundraiser for Rotary. She developed a photo contest for the community, found the merchants who would distribute it and coordinated the committee. The first year it raised over $6,000!

As Big Duck for the 2020 Rotary Duck Race, Karen really had her hands full.

The race was originally scheduled to be in May, then July. Finally altering to a virtual race really kept her on the move.

She had to change plans multiple times not just a little, but a lot. Even with all the changes, the duck race supported 66 local organizations and returned $96,000 to the community. She restructured the major and merchant prizes and was able to buy many prizes to help support our local merchants who are struggling. Thank you, Karen!

2020 offers all of us the opportunity to celebrate not only the passage of the 19th Amendment but also the achievements of women over that last 100 years. Celebrations are planned nation-wide, in every state and in local communities. A number of local organizations and community leaders, under the leadership of Jean McGuire, formed a committee to coordinate the local celebration under the title, “100 Years: A Celebration of Women.” These paragraphs have been collected by the Estes Valley Library. They have been appearing in the Estes Park News for several months and 100 will be chosen to be published as a booklet. Here are the next of the submissions.

The Story Of Cheryl Pennington By: Carey Stevanus

Cheryl Pennington was born in Emporia, Kansas and received her bachelor’s degree from Emporia State University.

She traveled to Colorado as a teaching assistant at CU and received her master’s degree. She taught physical education and coached at Niwot and Skyline High Schools. Upon retiring, Cheryl rekindled her interest in black and white photography. Her partner, Kay Cody gave her a gift certificate to attend a class about hand coloring photos as they did 100 years ago.

Cheryl met Barbara Gish, the daughter of Fred Payne Clatworthy, one of the first photographers to set up shop in

Estes. Many early EP and RMNP photos were taken by him. Barbara and Cheryl became great friends, and she gave Cheryl permission to reprint Fred’s original negatives.

Cheryl’s hand colored prints from Fred’s original historic photos soon became extremely popular. Many of these images had not been seen for decades.

Thanks to Cheryl we all get to share these images from the past once again.

She has hand colored photos for numerous books and articles including Rocky Mountain Rustic and YMCA OF THE ROCKIES - REFLECTIONS, TRADITIONS, AND VISION. She also hand colored book covers for: RMNP Pictorial History and RMNP- Historic places.

The Story Of Janet (Bovee) Burgess Jan Burgess was born and raised in Powell, Wyoming. After attending Hastings College in NE, Jan graduated from Colorado State College of Education in Greeley, May 1955. That summer, Jan took a seasonal job in Estes Park at The Taffy Shop. It was there that owner Lowell Slack introduced Jan to her future husband, Bob Burgess. A summer romance blossomed, and the two were married in 1956. Jan began teaching elementary school in Estes Park, taking a few years off to raise their daughters Elizabeth and Nancy. She retired from the district in 1990. Bob and Jan spent summers running the family’s restau-

rant, The Old Plantation, until 1992, closing the business after a successful 61-year run. After retiring, Jan continued her passions for opera, collecting western art and traveling the world with Bob and her daughters.

Jan has been a member of the Order of the Eastern Star and PEO Chapter AV for over 50 years. She is also a member of Estes Park Woman’s Club and Antiquarians. Jan served on countless fundraising committees for these organizations during her 65 years in Estes Park. Always one for a new adventure, Jan moved this past summer to Florida to live with Nancy.

The Story Of Nancy Glasier Gregg By: Nancy Almond

Born on Nov 18, 1953, Nancy is middle sister to seven siblings. She grew up on the Glasier farm in south Denver, where she developed an early love of the outdoors and a lifelong passion for keeping alive her family’s deeply rooted Colorado heritage. Nancy attended Adams State College and CSU where she majored in Audiology. In 1985 Nancy married Bruce Gregg, and soon after they moved to Estes Park where together they operated Gregg Construction until 2015. In addition to raising their two children Jesse and Sarah (both graduates of EPHS), Nancy was instrumental in the

development of Rocky Mountain Church, and managed the popular River Place Ministry for 10 years. She maintains strong relationships with many of the folks who regularly visited River Place, continuing to offer a listening ear, car rides to appointments, and words of encouragement to anyone who needs it.

Well known for her generous heart, many in Estes Park consider Nancy a close friend! In her “retirement” you are likely to find Nancy hiking the trails of RMNP, volunteering at Crossroads, shopping and organizing for Bright Christmas, or cooking a large pot of elk stew to share with neighbors.

The Old Gallery is a non-profit that provides art, education, entertainment and social services to area residents and visitors, including the Community Cupboard Food Bank, Community Closet, art and yoga classes, concerts and even juggling classes.

Land Use Regulations And Property Rights Community Planning Update EcoSense By: Judi Smith

During the last nine months, while humans have curtailed activity, the world has encountered an innumerable amount of proof of our influence on ecological health. Many facts have become evident and many (already known) are now demanding attention. Much of this leads, eventually, to good news. Coal use and that of petroleum products decreased during coronavirus lockdowns, dropping emissions by as much as 17% down to 2006 levels. While manufacturing returned and levels again increased, this irrefutably demonstrated that human activity contributes to global warming and increased world attention on preserving life on Earth.

The information below began with what came across my desk in the last week. It is my opinion that mankind has admitted complicity in the production of greenhouse gasses (GhG) and increased efforts to mitigate the effects. How much of this is a result of the skies over pandemic ridden cities is difficult to pinpoint.

Sea turtles struggle with the rising oceans and violent storms, caused by global warming and resulting in the destruction of nests before maturity. Recent attention has encouraged protection efforts at preserves in Florida, Georgia and the Carolinas and also (by local volunteers) on Turtle Beach (Oahu, Hawaii). Loss of the turtles could severely impact the tourist industry in these areas. (PBS and other sources) Tuvajuittu, the newest Canadian Marine Protected Area, created by an agreement between the governments of Canada and Nunavut (local territory) with the Qikiqtani Intuit Assn (indigenous people), contains the thickest ice in the Arctic Ocean. This is particularly important in light of recent activity in Alaska. The 319,411 square kilometer surface offers a unique opportunity for scientific research as well as a summer home for animals that must have ice to survive. (National Geographic and other sources) The increasing temperature of Earth and our oceans causes coral bleaching ad often releases infectious diseases on the reefs. The rise in sea level (caused by melting icebergs and by trash in the ocean) can increase sedimentation (from nearby land) to smother live coral and its inhabitants. The recurring hurricanes (also caused by the movement of warm air) can then devastate the weakened reef.

The coral reef just off shore at Puerto Morelos, a seaside Mexican village with a tourist based economy, protects the

beach and the town from hurricanes, reducing the destructive energy by 97%. A local volunteer group called “The Brigade” does its best to repair the damage, working round the clock since there is a limited window of time. Last year, this group, working with the government, and funded by the local tourism industry, insured the reef against hurricane damage. The benefit after Hurricane Delta helped fund necessary repairs to come. It isn’t perfect. The insurance benefit payout took three months to reach those involved in recovery. The delays meant some unrecoverable losses. However – so far – the paste used to glue fragments in place is holding and the effort has proved beneficial in setting an example for other communities. More and more governments are moving to ban single use plastic. With governments (and often non-profit organizations) devoting spare funds to support the homeless and the hungry populace created by COVID-19 other forms of revenue must be found. Molson-Coors is sponsoring a series of webinars on plastic for Colorado Recycles.

Recycle Colorado’s “Know Before You Throw” efforts encourage individuals to learn what is recyclable, reuseable, or compostable before submitting what is not and, therefore contributing to contaminations levels. Larimer County provides recycling service in Estes. By: Rex Poggenpohl, former Planning Commissioner This is an update on what has been happening since the dissolution last April of the unique 24 year old joint Town and County Planning District for our valley.

In April the Town separated from the unincorporated parts of the valley for land use Regulations and issues, forming its own, separate: Development Code, Planning Commission and Board of Adjustment. Consequently the rest of the valley reverted to the County: Land Use Code, Planning Commission (in Fort Collins) and Board of Adjustment (in Fort Collins). If your property is in the Town, you now only deal with the Town Planning staff for Land Use regulation.

Correspondingly, if your property is in the unincorporated portion of the valley, you are subject to the County Land Use Regulations.

While the most of the County Regulations naturally focus on rural properties, when the split occurred the County adopted much of the existing joint Estes Valley Development Code into their Land Use Code, so the regulations in each jurisdiction are similar. What changed more significantly is that the relevant decision making hearings and officials for you outside of Town residents, reside in Fort Collins. Realizing that Fort Collins hearings are inconvenient for their half of the valley property owners, the County Commissioners, quite experienced in land use issues, recently created an Estes Valley Planning Advisory Committee (EVPAC), to investigate local Land Use issues here and provide recommendations on such to the County: Planning Commission and Commissioners.

As a refresher, let us look again at few of the basic elements of a Land Use system: -The Comprehensive Plan for a planning district is the community’s overarching and long term (generally 20 year) Plan for the physical aspects of the area.

-The Land Use or Development Code is the body of regulatory laws that are derived from the Comprehensive Plan and are used to control the use and development of properties in consideration of the surrounding community.

-The Planning Commission develops the Comprehensive Plan; holds open public hearings on local land use issues in accordance with the local Code and State requirements. They have some roles that are decision making and some that are only recommendations to the elected officials.

-The Board of Adjustment generally holds binding open public hearings on zoning variances and any appeals to a planning official’s decisions.

- The elected officials, adopt the Comprehensive Plan, determines the land use regulations into laws and oversee the land use process.

Comprehensive Plan activity update: Last year the County completed a massive update of their Comprehensive Plan for the properties in the unincorporated parts of the County. This was divided into two parts, one for the plains portion of the County and one the mountainous portion. Since the Estes Valley already had an existing joint Comprehensive Plan at the time, no special attention was given

our valley in the Mountain portion of this new County Plan. Consequently, the County Commissioners plan to eventually do an additional segment of their Plan to address the unincorporated part of the valley. However, since the Town is finally planning to update the old Comp Plan that they had recently adopted from the previous joint planning system, the County is waiting to see how the new Town Plan will address in adjacent portions of the valley.

The Town has just recently received a State grant to help redo its Comp Plan and is planning to get stayed on such early next year.

This will involve several extensive Town Hall meetings to get key input from all area residents and property owners on how the community should look physically over the next 10 to 20 years. Since this Comprehensive Plan is the foundation for all land use regulations, you can see the importance of resident involvement. In the near future we will do a couple of articles to help the community understand the Comprehensive Planning process and issues for better public participation and input.

Larimer County, Estes Valley Planning Advisory Committee (EVPAC): your current County Commissioners, formed this new Committee earlier this year with seven local appointees. The main responsibilities of this Committee are to advise the County Planning Commission and Commissioners about Land Use issues in our valley. The Committee plans to do an “in depth” article about its roles in the near future.

Remember that the pioneering Federal Acts on zoning and planning, the subsequent State Statutes and the local government land use regulations, are to maintain key property owner rights while protecting the surrounding community from inappropriate use by a property owner. Consequently, it is in the best interest of every property owner to have an active interest in their local land use activities by keeping track of such activities and participating with related comments to planning and elected officials and to attend and speak at local hearings on issues of interest. The new Estes Valley Advisory Committee is discussing methods for announcing land use issues and associated hearings for the non Town public, possibly notices in the two local newspapers.

Finally, much thanks to departing County Commissioners Tom Donnelly and Steve Johnson. Having participated in four different planning districts and working with associated government officials, and in spite my disagreeing with some of their decisions, I can say we have been very fortunate to have the land use interest and experience of these two gentlemen. Best of luck in their future endeavors.

Jack worked as a Realtor most of his life but his true passion was for the outdoors. He was an avid hunter, hiker, fisherman, sailor, skydiver and all

around adventure-enthusiast. Jack was known for his quick wit, generous spirit and his beautifully infectious smile. One of his joys was volunteering his time with the Salvation Army and at his local church. The wisdom he would leave as his legacy would be to love fully and live life to its fullest every moment. A memorial will be held in his honor in the spring of 2021.
