Express Your Opinion About The Vacation Rental Regulations On December 12 Do you have an opinion you want to share with Larimer County government regarding the Vacation Rental Regulations in the Estes Valley Area?

Larimer County cares about how the proposed amendments will affect the residents in the Estes Valley Area and is hosting a working meeting to hear your thoughts, ideas, and knowledge on this topic. The meeting is scheduled for Saturday, December 12, 2015 from 9:00 a.m. to Noon, at the Estes Park Events Center, 1125 Rooftop Way, Estes Park, CO 80517.

This will be your first opportunity to give your input directly to Larimer County on the subject. The meeting will feature an update of the proposed amendments and small working group discussions to gain further insight into the outcomes of the proposal and explore ideas for capturing the positive and mitigating the negative.

No decisions will be made at this meeting. Information gathered at this meeting will be summarized and presented to the Board of County Commissioners and to the Estes Park Staff for inclusion into the decision making process.

Go Behind The Scenes With Citizen’s Police Academy

Anyone who has ever wondered what it's like behind the scenes at the Estes Park Police Department can find out by attending the 2016 Citizen's Police Academy. This informative series of classes, sponsored by the Town's Police Department and offered free of charge, will take place Jan. 11 - Feb. 10, 2016.

Sessions take place Monday and Wednesday nights from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Town Hall, 170 MacGregor Avenue.

Class size is limited to 30. Applications are available at the front desk of the Police Department at Town Hall, and at www.estes.org/citizenspoliceacademy.

State Extends Grant Funding Availability For Scott Ponds Natural Area Project The Colorado Department of Homeland Security and Emergency Management (DHSEM) has transferred the Town's previously awarded grant funding to the new Disaster Emergency Funds to support dam modification work at the Scott Ponds Natural Area.

These new funds extend the time allowed for project completion. The Town will solicit bids a second time to secure a construction contract. Public Works Director Greg Muhonen commented, "We are both relieved and thrilled with the DHSEM's decision to grant the Town adequate time to secure a contractor and complete the project. We hope for construction to begin in the spring or summer of 2016." More information on the schedule will be provided as it becomes available.

The flood repair project was recently postponed when the Town was unable to secure a construction contract to meet the March, 2016 deadline imposed by the original Community Development Block Grant-Disaster Recovery funding terms. The Town's Public Works Department began preparations for the dam modification work by draining the ponds in September. State regulations prohibit the Town from filling the ponds until the dams are restored in accordance with current regulations. Public Works Department staff and local volunteers recently performed debris cleanup at the site.

The Estes Valley Fire Protection District (EVFPD) Chief Officers and Safety Officers generally respond in their personal vehicles (POV). Fire fighters generally respond to medical calls in their personal vehicles; as this allows for faster response by officers and medical personnel to assess the emergency and provide medical care.

League Of Women Voters Affordable Housing Meeting On November 18, the Estes Park League of Women Voters held a general meeting focusing on the topic of affordable housing in the Estes Valley. Rita Kurelja, Executive Director of the Estes Park Housing Authority, related the history of this organization, starting from its formation as a volunteer committee of the town in 1993. She described the programs and income criteria to obtain housing through the Housing Authority, as well as its vision for the future. Judy Nystrom, realtor with First Colorado Realty and member of the Board of Directors for Habitat for Humanity, spoke about the Habitat program in the Estes Valley. Habitat for Humanity of Estes Valley has been serving the local community since the 1980s and has built at least thirteen homes to date. Additional homes are in the planning stages and applications are being accepted. Finally,

Eric Blackhurst, realtor, former town trustee, and current Chairman of the Estes Park Housing Authority Board of Directors, spoke about affordable housing needs of the Estes Valley since the 1960s. He summarized results of three housing needs studies conducted in 1989, 1999, and 2008, the community's responses to these needs over the years, and incremental approaches that could be used to continue to address the problem. All the speakers concluded that affordable housing continues to be a critical need in the Estes Valley. The Estes Park League of Women Voters will assess interest among its members and members of the community in studying this issue with a view toward adopting a position to serve as a basis for local advocacy. The League would welcome expressions of interest in such a study from the community.

Rooftop Rodeo Recognized By PRCA The rodeo with altitude just climbed a little higher.

The Rooftop Rodeo of Estes Park, Colo., was recognized as one of the top five medium rodeos in the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association during the organization’s annual awards banquet, which took place Wednesday, Dec. 2, in conjunction with the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo.

“This is a huge honor for us as a rodeo committee and for the Town of Estes Park,” said Mark Purdy, chairman of Estes Park Western Heritage Inc., a group of volunteers that produces the annual rodeo. “We’ve made a number of significant changes the last few years, and there have been many people work very hard to make our rodeo one of the best.

“This symbolizes all that.”

This isn’t the first time the Rooftop Rodeo has been honored by the PRCA; for the last few years, it has been a finalist for the Medium Size Rodeo of the Year, which is for events that offer committee purses between $3,000-$9,000 per event. For many years prior, the Rooftop

Rodeo was a regular fixture among the elite small rodeos, which offers purses of less than $3,000 per event.

In fact, the Estes Park rodeo – which takes place in early July every year – is a fivetime winner of the PRCA Small Rodeo of the Year, having earned the honor in 2003, 2006 and 200810.

“It was a major change for us to increase the purse at our rodeo when we made the decision a few years ago,” said Ben Vigil, president of Western Heritage.

“We know our place as a destination community for tourists, and we also want to be a destination rodeo for cowboys.”

The award was voted on by PRCA members, most of whom are contestants.

“This recognition is extremely special to us because of who voted on it,” Purdy said. “Our goals each year is to have a great event for our community, for the people who come to our community and for the cowboys and cowgirls that pay an entry fee in order to compete in Estes Park.

We want to make it special to each and every one of them.”

Commissioner Steve Johnson named Commissioner of the Year for 2015. Courtesy The Annual Winter Conference of Colorado Counties Inc. (CCI) was held in Colorado Springs November 30-December 2. Larimer County was honored in multiple ways: Commissioner Steve Johnson was named Commissioner of the Year for 2015 at the annual banquet by the 8-member CCI Board of Directors.

This award goes to a Commissioner who shows outstanding leadership at CCI and in their county and is intended to honor a leader who consistently goes above and beyond the “call of duty” and participates at a level which benefits CCI and all counties. Larimer County Commissioner Tom Donnelly and six other Colorado County Commissioners nominated Johnson who was cited for: strong convictions, valuing bi-partisanship, being an inspirational speaker, expert on county issues, being a fierce advocate for the citizens on issues such as child welfare, workforce training, help for the aging, and additional human services, and, championing the issue of urban redevelopment.

Johnson reacted, "It was a great honor to be named the 2015 Commissioner of the Year by my fellow commissioners from across the state. I absolutely love my job and the opportunity it has given me to improve the lives of the citizens of Larimer County and the beautiful county we live in. Any success I've had is the result of working with two great colleagues on the board and the dedicated staff and employees of Larimer County."

In other CCI conference news…..Commissioner Lew Gaiter III was elected to serve as President Elect of the CCI

Board of Directors. What this means is that Gaiter was re-elected to his current position as CCI's Front Range District Representative, one of eight Directors from across the State, on CCI's Board of Directors. He was also voted CCI President Elect for 2016 which means that if he is again elected as the Front Range District Representative at next year’s Winter Conference then he becomes the CCI Board of Directors President for 2017.

Other organizations who meet in tandem with the CCI conference are ACCA, Association of Colorado County Administrators and CARSE, Colorado Association of Road Supervisors and Engineers.

Larimer County Manager Linda Hoffmann was elected President of ACCA for 2016-17.

Larimer County Road & Bridge Director Todd Juergens was elected to the Board of Directors for CARSE. He will be the ‘North Central Director,’ representing Larimer, Boulder, Summit, Lake, Park, Jefferson, Clear Creek, and Gilpin.

Denver, and Broomfield counties. There are 10 officers on the Board of Directors, including a ‘Director’ from each of the 7 geographical districts.

CCI is a non-profit membership association whose purpose is to offer assistance to county commissioners and to encourage counties to work together on common issues. Blue Santa Delivers Holiday Cheer

Every holiday season, the Blue Santa program collects non-perishable food and hygiene products for disabled, shutin and elderly community members that need a little extra holiday cheer. Blue Santa is sponsored by the Town of Estes Park’s Police Department Auxiliary.

This week, members of Operation Blue Santa visited the residents of Prospect Park, Good Samaritan Society and the Senior Center, spreading good cheer, visiting with

seniors and handing out goodies such as candy canes.

There were many wide grins and happy faces as Santa came to greet them along with uniformed members of the Auxiliary.

Santa even stopped to take time to help Howard Speer put together a puzzle.

Even though I’m an avid environmentalist and I recycle like your true love on the twelfth day of Christmas (that partridge in a pear tree keeps showing up again and again!), I still produce a lot of waste. I do my best to keep rubbish out of the landfill, but I can’t seem to do enough.

Recently I had to throw away a Ziploc baggie, cloudy with age, because it finally fell apart. The baggie was at least ten years old so I shouldn’t feel bad about discarding it. Yet, as I tossed it into the wastebasket I thought, surely there is something more I can do to make use of a baggie with a hole the size of a golf ball in its side.

I can find a function for just about anything. For example, the tiny fingernail file on my nail clippers serves as a mini screwdriver, saving many a pair of glasses from falling apart. This time, even Pinterest couldn’t give me ideas for what to do with a crumbling plastic baggie, so out it went with the spent light bulb and the Styrofoam take-home container (the restaurant didn’t have foil).

There was a time when recycling as we know it today was the norm, not the exception. When the milkman delivered milk to the square metal box that sat on the front porch, he took away the empties, to be washed, sterilized and refilled. When I was young I pulled a red wagon up and down Erie Street in Wheaton, Illinois, collecting glass pop and beer bottles from our neighbors to turn in for money for my Girl Scout troop. Those same bottles could—and should still be in use today! Glass can be recycled indefinitely without deterioration.

Nonetheless, glass is rarely washed and sterilized whole any more. Instead it is taken to a plant where it is broken into pieces known as cullet and mixed with raw materials, to be reformed and reused. It’s all the king’s horses and all the king’s men on steroids.

For a while, when we bought groceries, the checkers asked, “Paper or plastic?” Now they don’t ask. They automatically go for the plastic, which they load minimally. You regularly see shoppers leave the store with carts full of nearly empty plastic bags which eventually get thrown away or blown across town until they snag on a tree branch and serve as a windsock for squirrels. (Only about 12 percent of plastic grocery bags are recycled.)

It used to be brown paper bags were the only grocery bags, and we reused them all. We covered our schoolbooks in them, we wrapped gifts in them, we darkened windows with them when we watched family movies on reels, projected onto a glittery silver screen unrolled and hooked onto a tripod stand.

In those old black and white movies I appear wearing hand-me-down clothes (aka recycled) delivered to our doorstep in brown paper bags from the family up the street. I wore a one-front-tooth grin, pants with patched knees and shirts with fulllength sleeves that only covered threequarters of my arms. My younger sister wore them when I could no longer pull the shirts over my head. (I think she was spared from the holey pants.)

When my youngest sister appeared on the scene, Mom washed baby diapers by hand before disposables came into being. And when she and Dad were growing up, they dried clothes outdoors, using the inexhaustible wind and solar power available for free, those clothes literally freezing stiff on the line in the winter.

We walked to and from school, we rode our bikes to deliver newspapers, we had one TV, one record player, and one telephone attached to the wall. Dad replaced the razor blade when the one he was using got dull, he didn’t replace the entire razor.

Mom just used Dad’s razor to shave her legs (don’t tell Dad!).

When we were thirsty we stuck a glass under the faucet at home, drank from the hose if we were outside in the heat of summer, or found a water fountain in public places. There was no such thing as bottled water. Who would ever dream of such waste!

Most of what we did back in the day to keep reusables in circulation and out of the dump can still be done today. (Except burn the stuff. It’s good that we aren’t allowed to do that anymore.) Old-fashioned recycling is well worth the effort, especially if it means we can regift all of those partridges in their pear trees.

League Of Women Voters To Consider Two National Issues At Dec. Meeting The Estes Park League of Women Voters will hold its December general meeting on Wednesday, December 16, at 10 a.m. in the Hondius Room of the Estes Park Public Library. Bonnie Seals, President of LWVEP, will present information on two issues being studied by the National League.

The first issue addresses campaign finance to update the League's position and increase member understanding on this important topic. At issue is whether financing a political campaign is protected speech under the First Amendment. The campaign finance position will be updated through a study and consensus process to consider: (1) the rights of individuals and organizations, under the First Amend-

ment, to express their political views through independent expenditures and the finance of election campaign activities; and (2) how those rights, if any, should be protected and reconciled with the interests set out in the current position.

The second issue involves a close look at the two ways of amending the US Constitution laid out in the provisions of Article V of the US Constitution. The main focus will be on the second method, never used to this point, requiring Congress to call a Convention for proposing amendments if two-thirds of the states apply. Both issues are highly topical in this election season, so we hope to see many of you there. As always, members of the public are invited to attend.

CARRI Has An Idea For Controlling The Vole Problem In Estes Park The mouse and vole populations in the Estes Valley has exploded. Members of CARRI have an idea for controlling the numbers of these destructive small mammals. The answer is the Long-eared Owl. This medium sized owl is a small mammal specialist. Like the Barn Owl that we have been studying for the past two years, Long-eared Owls can consume roughly 500 voles and mice in a nesting season!

The Long-eared Owl nests from the mountains of Rocky Mountain National Park (RMNP) down through the foothills and parts of the Valley. Owls are not known to build their own nests, but rather use the abandoned nests of birds such as crows and Cooper’s Hawks, as well as manmade structures.

Members of CARRI are going to construct nest boxes for Long-eared Owls and place them in proper habitat. The hope is to entice the owls to nest in and around Estes Park. We will be placing the nest boxes in January; as the birds have migrated out of the Estes Valley and won’t be returning to the area until February.

What we are looking for are locations to place the nest

boxes. However, Long-eared Owls prefer a specific habitat type.

The owls prefer areas with dense foliage, tall trees and forest edges where they can hunt. Areas outside of RMNP, where we have seen Longeared Owls include Stanley Heights, Hwy. 7 just across and past Lily Lake, and the area just south and west of Mary’s Lake.

Glen Haven is a good place for the owls, as is the areas of Chapin, Chiquita and Big Horn Drives. The biggest threat to Long-eared Owls is Great Horned Owls. Estes Park has a lot of Great Horned Owls, so anyone who has the larger more aggressive Great Horned Owl; I am sorry, but your property won’t work for this project.

Bright Christmas has been helping Estes Park area needy families provide a wonderful Christmas for their children for the last 31 years.

This week, the many dedicated volunteers distributed mounds of toys, gifts, clothing and food to families in need this holiday season.

Through Bright Christmas, local churches, organizations, families, club members or businesses “adopt” a family and purchase gifts for the family. Also, with funds donated to Bright Christmas, food is purchased for a delicious Christmas dinner, shoes if requested from Plum Creek Shoe Station, plus extra staple foods to stock their cabinets.

This is the 31st year Bright Christmas has been in existence. The first year, the organization helped out five local families. It has now grown into a huge entity which takes many volunteers, many hours of work to pull together every year.

Jean Austin, founder of Bright Christmas said proudly, “This year, we helped out 133 families and that includes almost 297 children. I’m just so pleased that these kids will now have a wonderful Christmas this year, thanks to all who sponsored a family and to those who donated to Bright Christmas! The community has been just great, donating clothing, toys, bicycles, food and more! I am amazed every year at what this town does for others in need, its just heartwarming!”

Volunteers with the Bright Christmas organization were very busy these past few weeks, sorting, wrapping and getting ready to distribute the thousands of gifts and food items donated by members of our generous community. Pick-up of the gifts and food took place last Wednesday, December 10 at the 18 Hole Golf Course.

Nancy Gregg said that one of the best things about Bright Christmas is pick-up day when they get to see the faces of the families as they receive their gifts. “It’s such a special day for us all of us!”

plies, emergency clothing and infant needs as requested by Larimer County Social Services, Crossroads Ministry or the schools all year long.

Nancy wanted to make sure to thank all who donated to Bright Christmas, Poppy’s Restaurant, who feeds the volunteers, the Estes Valley Recreation and Park District employees who really help out, the BIONIC club at EPHS who purchased 50 gifts and Crossroads Ministry who, without their partnership, Bright Christmas wouldn’t be what it is today!

The EVRPD Board’s decision to hire RLH Engineering was based on the fact that the EVRPD does not have the necessary staffing levels or in-house expertise to independently manage a large, complex capital construction project like the Community Center, and current staff are fully occupied managing day-to-day District activities.

RLH Engineering was chosen as the Owner’s Representative based on highly positive reviews of their contributions as Owner’s Representative in three large Estes Valley capital construction projects: the $44.4 million YMCA of the Rockies Estes Park Center Core Development Project from 2008 to 2010, the $22.7 million Estes Park School District R-3 school expansion and renovation project from 2006 to 2008, and the $4 million Estes Park Medical Center Emergency Department Expansion Project from 2008-2009. RLH Engineering is also currently serving as Owner’s Repre-

sentative for the Eaton Area Park and Recreation District’s recreation center initiative, a project of similar size and budget.

As Owner’s Representative, RLH Engineering will ensure the Estes Valley Recreation and Park District’s best interests are at the center of all decisions throughout the design and construction of the Community Center. RLH Engineering has seasoned professionals who are well-versed at design and construction and can utilize the lessons learned from a wealth of design and construction experience to solve any potential problems and offer creative solutions.

Tony Paglia, who worked with RLH Engineering during the Estes Park School District R-3 Project from 2006 to 2008, will be the Owner’s Representative local contact for the project.

Zumba Classes At Senior Center To Resume January 12 The Town of Estes Park’s Senior Services Division, in partnership with MedX of Estes, offers twice weekly ZUMBA classes at the Estes Park Senior Center, 220 Fourth Street. The class will resume Tuesday, January 12, 2016. There will be a break in winter classes; ZUMBA will not be held on these dates: December 15, 17, 22, 24, 29, and 31 and January 5 and 7.

The massive amount of volunteers spread joy and gratitude as they work to meet the needs of their guests. The food is prepared with love and excellence. Tiny Tots And Santa At The American Legion This Saturday

This year’s annual Tiny Tots with Santa at the American Legion celebrates fiftynine years of children sitting on Santa and Mrs. Claus’ laps, whispering their special Christmas wishes.

The event was started by June Bartlett Legion Auxiliary President in 1956.

Throughout the years, thousands of children have visited Santa at the American Legion Post 119 in Estes Park. The Legion is now on the third and fourth generation of children visiting Santa, and it is wonderful to see the parents and grandparents bringing their kids and grandkids back year after year and

watching them grow!

Tiny Tots with Santa is open to kids of all ages and at the event, the children receive a free toy from Santa and Mrs. Claus, delicious homemade treats and a free picture with Santa Claus. Photos taken that day will be published in a special section of the Estes Park News on Friday, December 25.

Bring your children and grandkids by this Saturday, December 12th between 9:00 a.m.-12 noon to the American Legion Hall and have your child bring their special holiday wishes and a big smile for the camera!

Get Your Tickets Today For Jacob Marley’s “Christmas Carol”

In Jacob Marley’s Christmas Carol, award winning actor and playwright, Tom Mula, takes us on a fanciful tour of Marley’s afterlife and his assignment to redeem Scrooge and himself. While staying fairly true to the original text, this play provides a perspective shift that can be appreciated by anyone who empathizes with the already damned Marley, who unlike Scrooge, had no second chance. This hilarious, affectionate, and very moving work brings the ghost of Jacob Marley out of the shadows and into the spotlight to tell his version of the Dickens classic.

The Fine Arts Guild’s production of Tom Mula’s, Jacob Marley’s Christmas Carol, will be presented as modified Reader’s Theater. In traditional Reader’s Theater, actors sit on stools and read

from scripts supported by music stands.

In this production, actors will carry small copies of the script, but will also move upon the stage and “act.”

Directed by Jim Valone, of Thornton, Colorado, Becky Browning, Cynthia Elkins, Chris and Lonnie Erskine, Pat Nelson and Michael Williams will portray all of the characters, on a set created

by Pat Nelson.

Vegan Holiday Potluck This Sunday

The Vegan Holiday Potluck will be held this Sunday, December 13 from 24 p.m. in Hondius Room of the Estes Valley Library.

We had 21 people on Nov. 22 for our vegan thanksgiving potluck. The food was delicious, and we had a great group of people!

We support the mission of the Community Recycling Committee that is part of Estes Park's League of Women Voters. Please bring your own plate, flatware and glass to make these events zero waste with no plastic flatware, paper/plastic plates and cups going into

the landfill. There is a sink to wash dishes. Reusable cloth table napkins and tablecloths will be provided.

Many of us have been inspired and motivated by Chazz Glaze's vegan cooking classes at Salud Clinic as well as her healthy reading book club at the library.

We hope you will join us for a fun time and healthy eating while learning new recipes!

Just Say “No” To Paper Or Plastic At 4.4 pounds per person per day (EPA estimate), the USA, produces (and buries) more garbage than anywhere else in the world. We, as a country, tend to gravitate to the disposable approach of the 1950s, which promoted “use once and throw out” products. But life has changed! Similar to the six-pack rings, plastic bags that blow in the wind and catch on hillsides and antlers are endangering our wildlife. they will decompose in 10-20 years, but buried in the landfill they may last 500 years or more. And those that escape our valley, travel our rivers to the coast, and accumulate in the “Great Pacific Garbage Patch.” This vortex has been estimated at twice the size of Texas. but the exact size of a floating island of trash is difficult to determine. At the League of Women Voters & Community Recycling Committee, we are hoping that funds

from this year’s Duck Race adoptions will help us address the proliferation of plastic bags in the Estes Valley and, perhaps, initiate a solution. But, in the meantime, what about the day to day activity of village residents and guests?

What can we do?

1) Reduce– This is the goal!

Of course, when shopping for groceries or gifts, always take your own, reusable cloth bags. (If you have none, most stores offer inexpensive versions that advertise for them. And they make a great

alternative to holiday wrapping paper.

For food storage, consider using reusable containers – preferably ones that can accommodate refrigerator, freezer, and oven for maximum efficiency and minimal transfer.

2) Reuse-for the unavoidable: Today, everyone ends up with some plastic bags (bread, produce, newspapers). Ziplock bags are not the only storage possibility, but, admittedly, they can be handy. However, just because they are financially inexpensive, or even “free,” we need not throw them “out” after a single use. There are numerous reuses for plastic bags, (lunch bags, storage, doggy waste, transportation). So, when you empty a plastic bag, reuse it and reuse it and reuse it.

3) Recycle-for any excess: We are very lucky in the Estes Valley to have so many responsible merchants. If you have an abundance of clean plastic bags (grocery, gift, bread, newspaper, ziplocks, even plastic wrap -- anything meltable), take them to Safeway. They melt them down to create new bags, reducing both the petroleum + the energy required in new bag manufacture – and eliminating storage in the landfill or the ocean.

As the ancient Native American proverb says, “We do not inherit the Earth from our ancestors, we borrow it from our children.” Each time we stop and think, each time we take the trouble to substitute something reusable, each time we recycle, we save a little bit of “Mother Earth” for them.

Go deep behind the scenes at the Stock Show on Tuesday, January 12, 2016. We will depart the Senior Center at 8:00 a.m. and return to the Senior Center approximately 5:30 p.m.

Have you ever wondered what goes on behind the scenes at the National Western Stock Show? This unique private tour will allow you to experience the show from a contestant’s point of view.

Watch as the cattle are prepped for show and accompanied to the staging area before being judged. Learn about the judging process and take in part of a livestock show. Check out the goats, sheep, llamas, and alpacas, and take in the excitement of the horse barn and cattle yards. You’ll have plenty of time to explore the Hall of Education Art Room and Exhibits, and learn about the National Western Stock Show’s success as an educational non-profit organization.

On top of that, you’ll have access to The National Western Club, an exclusive dining experience featuring a lavish lunch buffet ($16 per person). If you’d prefer to wander around and shop, grab a bite from one of the show’s many food vendors.

Religion & Philosophy Group Announcement The leadership of the Religion and Philosophy Group has decided not to convene the group at the usual time and usual place (third Wednesdays, 9:30 a.m. in the Senior Center) in the months of December 2015 and January 2016.

This is being done in the interest of sustaining the existence of a group which has been in Estes Park for 25 years. We need time for a “breather” to reconsider our goals and methods.

Two over-riding objectives should always be to remind ourselves of what is of timeless relevance in the great cultural and spiritual traditions (humanistic and religious) and to encourage a critical distance from the many prevailing social, cultural, and technological idolatries of our time.

‘WHO YOU GONNA CALL?’ We have been shocked by another mass shooting. As these occur, we all search for explanations and answers as to what ought to be done. Many focus on the weapons that were used… ’Guns kill people!’ Others call attention to the kinds of people that kill, showing a lack of respect for human life. They remind us: ’People kill people!’ Regardless of which position you take, we all seem to agree on one thing: no one really knows what to do to stop such tragic events. Our president has faced eight mass shootings during his tenure in office. Each time he stresses that something needs to be done, usually calling for lawmakers to solve the problem by passing stricter gun laws. Others agree. Others, however, focus attention on how hate-filled people evolve and what could be done to improve the environment of child-raising and people-helping that would address social and mental needs of such people. What would you suggest?

One subject that has drawn attention lately is what God is doing to help solve this tragic problem in our nation. One New York newspaper, in an article entitled: ‘God isn’t fixing this’, ridiculed Ted Cruz, Rand Paul, Lindsay Graham, and Paul Ryan for urging ‘prayers for the victims, their families, and the first responders’. The paper states: “As the latest batch of innocent Americans are left lying in pools of blood, cowards who could truly end gun scourge continue to hide behind meaningless platitudes.” Some of us tend to wonder what laws could be passed: ask ‘good guys’ and ‘bad guys’ to turn in their guns? Who would do so: ‘good guys’ or ‘bad guys’?. It seems that many politicians naively believe that those who would harm others would comply. No wonder then, that, when under attack, no one calls ‘Obama’ or ‘politicians’ for help. Who, then?

Well, strangely enough, when the trouble came many people were seen doing exactly what Cruz, Paul, Graham and Ryan asked people to do: ‘Pray’. A scared girl calls her dad and closes with: ‘Pray for me’. A large crowd gathered around as people are being attended to, join hands and bow their heads, in prayer. What are they saying by their actions? I believe that it is that, while God doesn’t always ‘fix’ things when people disregard His laws and act out in inhumane ways, He will be there for those who suffer, giving support, hope and help, even protection, to those who will lean on Him. A second group that were ‘called’ as people were being threatened and hurt by these cruel people were the local police agencies. In a time when it is very hard for some in the ‘Brotherhood of the Blue’ to do their jobs because of the ridicule and disdain heaped upon them by people who like to judge them by the actions of a few careless, even guilty, police officers, when trouble comes who are people that you want to have by your side? You want a rapid response of the many dedicated men and women who have the commitment of one police officer who was quoted as saying to potential targets, “Go there. I will take a bullet before you.” Or, like Officer Swasey in Colorado Springs, who did…and died. Such is the spirit of most of these noble people. Call them!

So, ‘who you gonna call’ in a time of danger and trouble? I recommend that you begin with prayer. God is continually ‘fixing things’ in the lives of many who are sick, troubled, discouraged, and beaten down. He will and does ‘fix’ many things in the lives of people you know. That’s why they pray…and praise. He will also bless you if you trust.

Along with that, call on those ‘heroes’ who ‘serve and protect’ in our community. You will rarely be disappointed in what they try to do to help keep us safe.

Estes Park Medical Center Foundation Presents Check To Prospect Park Living Center

By: Kerrie Hill, EPMC On Friday, December 4, 2015, Estes Park Medical Center Foundation Board members Ken TeSelle, President, John Cooper, and Charley Griffin, presented a check to Becky Curtin, Nursing Home Administrator in the amount of $10,284 on behalf of donors Norm and Elaine Carver.

“We couldn’t be more pleased to accept the check from the medical center foundation. Prospect Park Living Center will use this money to purchase equipment and other items that will enable us to promote comfort, safety, independence, and enhance the lives of our wonderful residents,” said Becky Curtin. “We are grateful to the Carver’s for their donation.

Also present to accept the check were Interim CEO, Mark Gregson, staff members and PPLC residents. “This donation really gives us a boost with the financial stability rural hospitals need as the landscape and reimbursements for healthcare continues to change.” This is a tremendous gift and we are humbled by our donor’s generosity.”

Estes Park Yoga was created from one local business woman’s desire to expand Estes Park’s wellness community. Recognizing the connection of wellness to the many benefits of yoga, Harriette Woodard opened a yoga studio for the Estes Park community and the wellness traveler on July 1.

This peaceful and safe yoga studio in Estes Park is located at 145 E Elkhorn Ave. on the second floor of Park Place Mall. Through large windows that fill the studio with natural light, Estes Park Yoga looks out over the quaint street scene on Elkhorn Ave. There are views of several shops and the Wheel Bar; and, Prospect Mountain towers in the background, grounding the studio with a sense of place in this beautiful mountain location.

Estes Park Yoga is welcoming and the feeling of community is apparent the moment you enter, thanks to the exceptional group of instructors that call it their “Yoga Community." Recently, a Zumba class has been added to the studio, offering additional wellness opportunities in one centralized location.

Whether you are new to yoga or a seasoned practitioner, there is a class and instructor that is right for you. All have

completed the minimum of 200 hours training required to be a certified yoga instructor. In addition, most continue their education with workshops and trainings to improve the quality of their instruction, seeking new ways to bring accessibility to the yoga community in a safe environment.

Mya Izzolena commutes from Longmont to teach Mountain Yoga II, a Vinyasana Flow style class on Friday mornings at 8:30. She is an energetic and soulful teacher, weaving life experiences and yogic wisdom into her classes. She has an uncanny ability to connect with each student in the room, leaving them feeling as though they have experienced a class designed just for them.

Estes Park resident Kendra Ryan teaches Mountain Power Yoga three times a week: Tuesday mornings at 8:30, Thursday evenings at 5:30, and Saturday mornings at 8:00. Kendra’s classes are truly amazing. She brings a feeling of empowerment to her students. Kendra’s attention to the student's individual needs is a strong point in her teachings.

She is prepared to give each student the best possible yoga experience and can include poses for those with chronic health conditions or injuries. Leslie demonstrates that yoga is truly a practice for everyone.

Nancy Collinet, from Estes Park, teaches Mountain Yoga II Monday mornings at 8:30, Tuesday and Wednesday evenings at 5:30, as well as a kid’s yoga after school program. Nancy’s teaching style comes from the heart. It is one of movement and Vinyasa Flow, incorporating a Pilates element. She is genuine in her love of yoga. Her students

Zumba with Caprissa Frawley of Estes Park is offered on Monday evenings at 5:30. Zumba is a wonderful way to step up the energy level of your workouts.

Caprissa has been teaching Zumba since 2009 and fully embraces the “Zumba way” of an intense and passionate workout to international rhythms mixed with rock and hip hop.

She finds Zumba an all-encompassing fitness program that engages the mind, body, spirit and community. Her enthusiasm and energy make for a fun class and an excellent workout program.

Look To Your Library - Countdown The Days To The Holiday - Wrap & Read A Book A Day By: Melanie Kozlowski, Youth Services Supervisor

As the days get shorter and the nights get colder, surprise your kids with a great reading adventure this winter.

Wrap & Read a story.

The lights are all sparkling and the excitement of the holidays is building.

Reading as a family is important for instilling a life-long love of reading and this is just another fun way to incorporate it naturally and what a great tradition to start!

Here’s how Wrap and Read works. Collect books from around your home, perhaps some that have been on the bookshelf for a while or, come visit the Estes Valley Library and check out a stack of picture books. Include some of your family favorites or seek out and find some new treasures.

Once you’ve got a good collection of books, wrap them up! Use colorful paper

or scrap paper or even newspaper. Keep it fun and simple… no peeking allowed!

Once the books are wrapped, place them in a prominent spot so the kids can see them.

You can number the books if you’d like to read them in a certain order, or just let your kids pick one from the pile.

Then let the read-aloud countdown begin! Unwrap and enjoy a book as a family each night.

The Estes Valley Library has an amazing collection of holiday and winter stories to select from; all are available for borrowing. Special holiday books may be borrowed for one week and all of the others are loaned for three weeks.

Wrap & Read is just one fun way to bring the joy of reading with a child into the busy holiday season. The library also offers story times on Thursday and Friday at 10:00 and 10:30 a.m. and on Saturday at 10:30 a.m. throughout the year.

Teen After School Program: Tiny Whoville Gingerbread Houses Middle School and High School Teens, welcome to Whoville! On Friday, December 18 from 3:45 to 5:00 p.m. at the Estes Valley Library, come decorate a tiny Who-gingerbread replicated house with assorted candy-licious building supplies. Then take it home and see how long it lasts.

You remember Whoville! It comes from the book, How the Grinch Stole Christmas by Dr. Seuss. We will enjoy the original animated video How the Grinch Stole Christmas and some other animated classics while we work on our Whoville gingerbread houses. Refreshments will be enjoyed including a “cocoa sundae.” This program is co-sponsored by the Estes Park Old Fashioned Candy Store.

Hermit Park Open Space Seasonal Closure Begins December 21, 2015 The seasonal closure of Larimer County’s Hermit Park Open Space, southeast of Estes Park, will begin effective Monday, Dec. 21, 2015.

Hermit Park Open Space will remain closed to the public during the winter months because of winter weather conditions and the protection of wintering range for big game animals, such as elk.

Hermit Park will reopen to the public on March 1, 2016.

Quota Club Offering New “Celebrate Estes Park” Posters/Cards

Since meeting my wife, Kathleen George, in 2009, Estes Park has been my home. Together we now manage Rustic Mountain Charm, on Elkhorn Avenue.

Drawing upon my previous experience in business and small town government, I jumped right into community affairs through volunteerism and participation in both the Citizen’s and Police Academies to learn as much as I could about my new community. I have learned a lot.

Beneath all the unmistakable quaintness and charm of Estes Park, I began to see

issues and problems, many of long standing that need attention and active engagement. Others, I know, feel much the same way about our community’s needs. But many who live and work in Estes Park, quite understandably, simply do not have the time to give to solving the challenges before us. Many of our retirees are in much the same position.

They came to Estes Park to enjoy their retirement, though I continue to marvel at the extent of their volunteerism. To put it simply: my passion to run for Trustee derives itself from my desire to represent those who do not have the time or desire to participate in local government or work on those things that matter most to our collective future. I understand in so doing that ongoing two-way communication with members of the community is essential. Unless I understand your views and attitudes, your future vision for Estes Park, I cannot serve you well. This is my pledge to you. To listen and to respond. And I will do so by making myself continually available on-line and by reaching out to you through periodic focus groups and in other ways. If elected, I will work with you and for you to create a better and stronger Estes Park. I would appreciate your vote in the April Election.

Purchase A Collector Ornament And Help Neighbors In Need Since 1986, the Town of Estes Park employees' Helping Hands Committee has created commemorative annual holiday ornaments for purchase by the public. The proceeds from ornament sales are used to provide high school senior scholarships and assistance to local families in need. Available now, the 2015 ornament honors a local and guest favorite, the elk. This photo was taken by local photographer James Frank.

Ornaments are available for $12 each at several Estes Park locations: Estes Park Town Hall at 170 MacGregor Avenue; The Estes Park Museum at 200 Fourth Street; The Estes Park Visitor Center at 500 Big Thompson Avenue; The Estes Park Senior Center at 220 Fourth Street; and Peak Hallmark in Upper Stanley Village. A limited number of ornaments from previous years are also available at Town Hall at discounted rates.

Congratulations to Lindsey Kufeld, the Student of the Week for December 11, 2015.

In addition to her academics, Lindsey enjoys volleyball, basketball and soccer and being on the Bionic (Believe It Or Not, I Care) Team and in Interact Club.

Outside of school activities she likes hunting, fishing, camping, four wheeling and wake boarding.

Lindsey has lettered in volleyball, basketball and soccer the last two years.

Her favorite quote/verse is “I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.” Galatians 2:20. The reason this verse means so much to Lindsey is because it is the verse that best represents the time she accepted Christ into her life.

After high school Lindsey plans to attend Aims Community College first, then transfer to University of Northern Colorado to major in Criminal Justice.

Rachel Sharman, an Estes Park local fighting undifferentiated endometrial sarcoma, has launched an online fundraising campaign to fund a potentially life-saving treatment. In less than 24 hours, the campaign has raised more than $72,000 towards the goal of $75,000 and the accompanying video has more than 32,000 views.

Sharman is a 28-year-old wife and mother of three, who has been fighting stage three undifferentiated endometrial sarcoma for two and a half years. Sarcomas are one of the most aggressive forms of cancers, and undifferentiated forms are even more so. This form of cancer is very difficult to treat with traditional methods. According to Sharman’s doctors, the condition is very rare and they are astonished at her ability to fight the disease.

During her battle with cancer, Sharman has undergone surgery as well as extensive dietary and natural therapies. She experienced 20 months of cancer-free scans, until a recent diagnosis indicating multiple masses in her abdomen.

Sharman and her family have utilized a variety of treatments available to them in the United States, but the diagnosis requires them to aggressively pursue alternative options. The money raised through the campaign will allow Sharman to receive treatment at the Hope 4 Cancer Institute, located in Baja, Mexico.

The process of leaving the country to receive treatments is expensive, and outside of the family’s insurance coverage,

leading Sharman and her family to reach out to loved ones online for assistance.

“This is the most personal way I could think of to update my many friends and family around the globe on my recent scan and battle with cancer,” she wrote on her Facebook page.

The initial success of the campaign has exceeded Sharman’s expectations.

“The past 16 hour have been, to put it simply, unfathomable,” said Sharman.

“My brain cannot wrap around all that has happened. The outpouring of care, support, selflessness, generosity, and, more than anything, the love of Jesus, has blown this little mountain girl away.”

Donations have been made using online fundraising tool GoFundMe as well as PayPal. Many of the GoFundMe donations have been accompanied by personal notes from friends, family, strangers, and other cancer survivors.

“I don’t know you, but I pray that you can beat this,” wrote one donor.

“Never give up, never surrender,” wrote another.

Residents Send Joy To 18,400 Children In Need Worldwide During Operation Christmas Child's National Collection Week in Estes Park, Nov. 16-23, residents generously contributed to the Northern Colorado Area Team collection of 18,400 giftfilled shoeboxes for children in need. This record collection is an increase over last year's collection of 17,676 gifts.

Throughout the year, Estes Park churches, businesses, schools and individuals filled shoeboxes with toys, hygiene items, school supplies and notes of encouragement. The Northern Colorado Operation Christmas Child Area Team is now thanking the Estes Park community for their gift donations already on their way to children in need worldwide.

Thousands of children will soon experience the joy of Christmas, thanks to the Estes Park community. Residents packed empty shoeboxes with small items like toys, school supplies and hygiene items for Operation Christmas Child, a project of Samaritan's Purse that sends gifts to children living in difficult situations around the world.

For those who missed National Collection Week, you can still get involved.

Through the Samaritan's Purse website, you can virtually "pack" a shoebox, allowing anyone with a computer or mobile device to provide a tangible gift to a child a world away.

At samaritanspurse.org/buildonline, visitors can select a child's age and gender, shop through an online selection of culturally relevant gifts, and finish by uploading a photo and writing a note of encouragement to the child who will receive it. After the shoeboxes are packed

and sent by the Operation Christmas Child team, participants can discover where in the world their gifts will be delivered. It is a convenient yet meaningful way to join in a project that brings hope to children in need.

Rocky Ridge Music Center unveils plans to open a year-round Rocky Ridge Music Academy in North Boulder (NoBo) on January 4, 2016. The Music Academy will be the Boulder community arm of the renowned 73-year-old Center’s summer residential music program and festival, serving students of all ages and levels.

Make Your Opinions Known On Vacation Rentals This Saturday To The Editor: In 2008 the Board of Trustees changed the Estes Valley Development Code to allow vacation rentals (short term rentals of 30 days or less), by right, in all zoning districts in the Valley. With that change and the advent of internet marketing websites (such as VRBO & HomeAway) the Estes Valley Vacation Rental Owners Association estimates the number of vacation rentals in the valley has grown to 600 or more in the past few years and is continuing to grow at rate of 10% – 25 % per year.

Requirements for vacation rentals in the Valley are quite clearly stated in the Development Code: • All vacation rentals have a business license if within Town limits or a permit if in the County.

• Occupancy is limited to two persons per legal bedroom plus an additional two with a maximum of eight persons total.

• Occupancy of more than eight is a violation and is illegal.

• Parking rules, noise and trespassing ordnances, lighting requirements, etc. apply.

• A property manager or local contact for each property is required to be on file in the Town Clerk’s office.

To date our local government has chosen not to enforce these rules. Only 300 – 350 vacation rentals are licensed, 70 – 75 are advertised nationally to “sleep” more than eight (several as many as 20 – 30), and there is no clear process to re-

solve any neighborhood complaints.

At a November 9, 2015 special study session with the Larimer Board of County Commissioners, our Town Trustees through staff proposed changing the maximum occupancy limit to a maximum of 20 in all residential zoning districts except R and R1. No plan for enforcing the existing requirement was discussed. See minutes of the meeting on the Town’s website at: http://estesgovtv.pegcentral.com/player.p hp?video=b10b1f02d1563d596220f91c9 705682d Had the County Commissioners not unanimously objected to the proposal without having the benefit of additional public comment, as the very next step in the approval process, this proposal was to have been before the Planning Commission at their December 15 meeting for their recommendation of a draft code change.

The Larimer County Commissioners are asking for your thoughts and opinions regarding vacation rentals and this proposal. They have scheduled a special Saturday morning (Dec. 12, 9:00 a.m. at the Event Center) meeting with County Staff to be held here in Estes Park just to hear what the citizens of Estes have to say.

Regardless of your thoughts or personal experience with vacation rentals, please take opportunity this Saturday morning to make you opinions known.

This is an incredibly important meeting, please plan to attend.

There’s Snow Telling To The Editor: I moved to Estes Park on December 20, 1996. I think about 98% of us who live in Estes are from other towns and cities.

I often wonder why, when we hear a weather system is coming to town and everyone warns us we’re going to get three feet of snow, we actually only end

up with two inches of snow?

The only really big snow my mother and I can remember getting was about 13 years ago when we got 42 inches of snow and it took me five days to get to Safeway. I know Allenspark got 70 inches of snow during that storm as well.

Regarding Height Variances, Open Space And Code Limits To The Editor: The undersigned object to granting variances to the 30 foot building height limit for special interests. The owner of the Lot 4 Stanley Wellness Center has applied to move the wellness center use in to the building under construction and a variance to add a fourth floor. The Town Trustees have expedited a special review of the request. The basis for the request does not meet any of the criteria for a variance. Just "wanting" a fourth floor for maximum development, when there are reasonable alternatives to accommodate the use, is not grounds for a variance.

Since the 2013 flood, development pressures have intensified. The Stanley Hotel saw this as an opportunity to go to the voters to get approval to buy and develop the Town's Lot 4, despite the fact that initially the same parties argued visual preservation as the need for the first voter approval initiative.

As everyone now knows, the EPMC could not come up with the funding.

Now, John Cullen has announced a new deal with Colorado State University. We acknowledge the high value of the Stanley Hotel to the image and financial health of our community and that a partnership with CSU could be an important contribution to the Town, in the absence of an EPMC facility. No position is taken here on whether changes in use or parties are legal, in light of the ballot approved. But the problem is that Mr. Cullen has used this new venture as justification for a second attempt to circumvent the Town's building height limit. If this is granted, wouldn't it open the door to every building on the grounds... the new wedding pavilion, the planned film center and auditorium-every high-value, special project in Town?

Our Town has had building height limits for decades. Anyone can see the value of the limit, and the reason for its adoption. Stand anywhere in Town, and you can still see the ridgelines and the ring of mountains. Just go to Steamboat Springs and Beaver Creek and see what happens when those limits are gutted. A variance is particularly objectionable when residents have selected a location for their homes partially based on the views, and the variance would impair those views.

It should be noted, that a full page newspaper ad by The Stanley Lot 4 developers attempted to make the issue about specific homeowners rather than the 30 foot code limit. They go so far as to show a minimum visual impact of the plan from a home. The accuracy is questionable, and the developer has not pro-

vided the camera files for verification as requested. This was a personal attack on one family, even using their name without permission. Given that the home of another resident much more severely impacted was not shown, this was an offensive distortion of both the issue and impact on people.

Citizens have lobbied for preservation of the beauty of the Valley for years. The Association for Responsible Development ("ARD") was formed over 25 years ago to provide a balance to unlimited and irresponsible redevelopment, and the fight for balance has continued nonstop. The Estes Valley Land Trust was also formed about this time, for the same purposes. As evidenced by height limits and open space regulations, support of the Land Trust, and adoption of the Code limits, the community has valued preserving views and wildlife corridors for a very long time. Chipping away at the height limit by variances, is a dangerous precedent.

Donate To A Good Cause Starvation In Malawi Estes Park residents Jim & Carol Nussbaumer recently returned from a 7 week trip to Malawi, Africa. Malawi is, by many accounts, the worldâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s poorest country and the Nussbaumers say they have now had to look starvation in the eyes --- and it was not a pretty sight..

Most of Malawiâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s 14 million people are subsistence farmers. When the rains failed earlier this year, crops also failed and now the threat of starvation is very real.The Nussbaumers are part of Marion Medical Mission (MMM), an organization best known for installing shallow wells in Africa to provide the â&#x20AC;&#x153;poorest of the poorâ&#x20AC;? with a protected source of drinking water. Jim & Carol installed wells but were also a part of an emergency distribution of maize, the basic food for many people. Marion Medical Mission partnered with the Presbyterian Synod of Nkhoma to provide 4,400 families with a 110 bag of maize. The bag will feed a family of 5 for a month at a cost of $15. MMM has pledged it will provide each of these families with another bag of maize each month until March when the new crops should be available. These most vulnerable families were selected by their individual villages with assistance from the church. Church affiliation or lack of it made no difference in the selection process, but the organizational structure of the church made the process easier.

Each of 22 congregations, working with the Traditional Authorities, selected 200 families at-risk in their local area. No one knew why they were being asked to identify these families until it was nearly time to distribute the maize. Marion Medical Mission, through its donors, was able to purchase maize and the church and village organizations handled the distribution. Many of the people receiving maize were elderly widows trying to support grandchildren. Most of them were already too frail and weak to lift the bag of maize but often took hold of a corner of it as someone else carried it. By holding the corner the widow maintained her dignity and was able to say â&#x20AC;&#x153;I helped carry my bag of maize.â&#x20AC;? Jim and Carol report there are many more people in Malawi who need help to avoid starvation. A number of NGOs are planning to help, but it takes a long time to collect funds, do studies, decide how and to whom to distribute. Marion Medical Mission, because of its previous and consistent presence in Malawi and its partnership with the local churches, was

able to provide funds almost immediately and 96.8% of those funds has gone directly to purchase and distribute the maize. Only 3.2% has gone for oversight and administration.This article is a direct, unapologetic plea for people in the Estes Park area to donate. We have poor people in Estes Park, of course. Some are working two and three jobs in order to survive. Some have a hard time finding affordable housing. But here in Estes there are places where folks can get help (Crossroads, for example), medical care (Salud Clinic) and education for their children starting in preschool. None of these services, including any job at all, are available to the most vulnerable in Malawi. As you read this, people in Malawi are hungry.

Not just â&#x20AC;&#x153;wish I had a pizzaâ&#x20AC;? hungry. Hungry. As in â&#x20AC;&#x153;Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m eating only one small meal a dayâ&#x20AC;? hungry. Many, many people are facing months of hunger and starvation. MMM has already begun to provide maize to some of the most vulnerable. They will now survive, but they are hungry. If you have ever felt hunger pangs â&#x20AC;&#x201C; maybe on that diet of grapefruit and dry toast â&#x20AC;&#x201C; remember how it felt, then please reach into your pocket and give what you can. It doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have to be much but if everyone reading this gives something, we can make a difference.It costs $15 to feed a family of five in Malawi for a month. That is $60 for the four months in the â&#x20AC;&#x153;hungry season.â&#x20AC;? We happily handed over $15 the other night for a pizza and drinks. ! One meal for 2 people and we didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t even think twice about it. Junior Jammers (K-1st Grade) Junior Jammers is an instructional program for K-1st grade. The program is Saturday mornings only. It is located at the Elementary School Gym, 9-9:45 a.m., from 1/30/16-3/5/16. Registration is from 11/30/15-1/20/16. Registration is $40 In-District/$50 Out-of-District.

Youth Basketball League In the Youth Basketball League, players participate on a team and practice twice a week and have six Saturday morning games. Practice days and times are based on gym and coaches availability. Practices begin the week of January 19, 2016.

Games are Saturday mornings from 1/30/16-3/5/16. Games times are between 10 a.m.-1 p.m. and are located at either the Elementary School Gym or Middle School Gym. Divisions are: Corec 2nd-3rd grade, Co-rec 4th-5th grade, and Co-rec 6th-8th. **A minimum of 16 players in a division must be registered on the final day of early registration to ensure two teams. If there is not a mini-

mum of 16 players, 6th graders may be combined with the 4th-5th grade teams.

Registration is from 11/30/15-1/6/16.

Registration is $40 In-District/$50 Outof-District.

Rec Cheer EVRPD is sponsoring a 7-week/2 dayweek, Rec Cheer Program for the winter of 2016, hosted by HS Cheer Coach, Jennifer Rodda. This course will teach the fundamentals of cheerleading, including basic stunts and tumbling, and will include an exhibition performance(s), dates TBD. Available for boys and girls, K-5th grade. Uniform fees/fitting/swap: Cheerleaders will bring their old uniforms to the first week of practice for fittings, exchanges, and orders. Anyone ordering a brand new uniform will be required to pay a $50 uniform fee. This will be required if there is not a used uniform available in your child’s size. *No online payments will be available for uniforms.

All uniforms must be paid by cash or check only (no credit cards), at the Uniform Swap. Checks must be made out to EVRPD. Practices are Monday and Wednesday, 3:45-4:45 p.m. Location is TBD due to high school sports. Gymnastics is from January 20-March 3. Registration is from 11/30/15-1/6/16. Coaches/Referees Wanted The EVRPD is also in need of qualified

referees and volunteer coaches for Youth Basketball. Available practice times are based off of gym availability, but are primarily in the evening starting at 5:30 p.m. for one hour a day/twice a week. If you coach and your child is a participant, your child’s registration will be waived.

Basketball referees are needed. Paid or volunteer positions are available. If you are interested in reffing or coaching, or for more information about our programs, please contact us.

37th Annual Frost Giant 5K & 10K Run Join us for the 37th Annual Frost Giant 5K & 10K Run! The race will be Sunday, January 24, 2016. The 5K is at 11 a.m.

The 10K is at 12 p.m. Run one race or both! The race starts at the Estes Park Municipal Building. Male and Female Divisions are: 0-8, 9-11, 12-15, 16-25, 2632, 33-39, 40-49, 50-59, 60-69, 70 & up.

There are awards for the overall 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place male and female winners.

2015 Sport And Outdoor Gear Swap A Huge Success!

Thank you to all our community patrons who brought in items to sell at this year’s Sport & Outdoor Gear Swap sponsored by the Estes Valley Recreation & Park District (EVRPD).

Folks were encouraged to bring in gently used items and set their own price on them to sell. 15% of all sales went towards the EVRPD’s Youth Activity Scholarship Fund. Due to the great amount of shoppers, the Sport Swap saw over $5,000 in sales, which means approximately $800 dollars in scholarships for youth in our community to play sports. That will provide at least 28 kids in our community a chance to play sports! So thank you patrons of Estes Park for participating

and bringing in your great items to sell!

We would also like to thank the Estes Park Mountain Shop for allowing us to host our event in the climbing gym and providing us with clothing racks and hangers, even though they were slammed with the first day of their annual sale!

A big thank you also goes out to the EVRPD volunteers that helped make this event a success. They put in extra hours, made and hung fliers, helped make sales, organized, cleaned, and helped make it a smooth process.

Active At Altitude Partners With Mobilenicity To Launch Training App For 2016 Zion Half Marathon Active at Altitude, from Estes Park, CO, has announced a partnership with Boulder company Mobilenicity to provide a variety of apps for athletes. The first app launched from the partnership combines the existing WeRun.Club app from Mobilenicity, with training programs provided by Active at Altitude for runners in the 2016 Zion Half Marathon. The race takes place on March 12, 2016, and finishes at the entrance to Zion National Park.

The WeRun.Club app from this partnership provides two levels of program for runners in the 2016 Zion Half Marathon, the first in the series of Half marathons at National Parks in North America from Vacation Races. The app is available for both iPhone and Android phones, and features daily, weekly, and complete program displays, along with an extensive resources section, and a training log so that runners can track their training progress. Each training session includes an image from previous Zion Half Marathons, providing a positive training stimulus for runners. Additionally, the app features race information, providing a high quality resource for runners with all information in one easily accessible location. Apps for athletes have developed exponentially recently, mainly based on fitness trackers or mapping devices. The WeRun.Club app generated by this partnership provides an affordable and professional training resource for runners. Around 30% of runners at the Zion race will experience their first half marathon.

Future versions of the same app will

also provide programs for both beginner and intermediate level runners for the balance of the 2016 Vacation Races series of half marathons: Grand Canyon, Grand Teton, Yellowstone, Rocky Mountain, Great Smoky Mountains, Yosemite, & Lake Powell.

Each program will be tailored to provide

specific training stimuli for each race.

Each of the Vacation Race series is at higher elevations than many runners are used to, so the programs will benefit from the altitude training experience of Active at Altitude, and also include additional information on how to prepare for running at higher elevations.

WeRun.Club has been developed by Mobilenicity to deliver training programs for running clubs and coaches, allowing editable and brand-able training solutions for athletes. James Kile James S. “Jim” Kile of Estes Park passed away December 6. He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Sarah “Sally” Kile, son Steven (Jennifer) Kile of Fort Collins and daughter Tracy (Tim) Kile Schwartz of Fort Collins. He was Grampaw to three grandsons, Ryan, Noah and Jason, and two granddaughters, Audrey and Elise.

Jim was a man of deep love, integrity, humor and joy. He was smart yet humble, and quick to share credit for his own accomplishments.

He worked hard to provide for his family and instill in his children and grandchildren values for education, hard work, exploration and pursuit of varied passions. He believed in “paying it forward” and inspired others to do so as well. J im was born in Berea, Ohio in November 1944 to Jim Kile, Sr. and Doris Ruby Kile. His parents and his sister, Patricia Kile Zaski, preceded him in death. He met the love of his life, Sally Smead, in 8th grade. They both graduated high school in Toledo, Ohio in 1962 and sustained their relationship through college; both attended schools in western Massachusetts. Jim earned a bachelor’s degree in American History and Literature in 1967 from Williams College.

Realizing that his draft number could be drawn anytime for the Vietnam War, Jim enlisted in the Naval Reserve in 1964, participating in Officer Candidate School during summers. He was first stationed on the destroyer USS Twining in San Francisco Bay while Sally was doing an internship for graduate school in New York City. Being separated by such a distance proved too difficult, so Jim proposed, and Sally transferred to UC Berkeley to complete her MSW. Their early marriage was tested – and strengthened – by additional distances, including his time serving in Vietnam on the hospital ship USS Repose.

Following honorable discharge and return to civilian life, Jim entered residential real estate sales in Oakland, California, where he found mentors whom he credited throughout his ca-

reer. He and Sally backpacked and scubadived all over Northern California, and welcomed their two children while living there. In 1977, the family moved to Incline Village, Nevada, on the north shore of Lake Tahoe, where they lived until 1988.

There, he taught his children a love for nature and the outdoors, including camping, skiing, hiking, swimming and boating.

He expanded his real estate experience by founding two residential real estate offices and through the development of commercial property. He earned respect for his quiet leadership, sense of fairness, and good judgment.

He taught and monitored ethics for the real estate board, drawing from his clear moral center.

Jim supported his children’s activities by volunteering on youth activities boards, coaching baseball and encouraging their musical endeavors. In 1988, the family moved to Fort Collins, Colorado, where Jim and Sally lived until building their current home in Estes Park in 2004. They enjoyed adventures together around the U.S., and explored many parts of the world. His favorite times were with his extended family.

Jim’s gregarious personality made him the life of any party, with a twinkle in his eye and bad pun at the ready. He loved playing, coaching, and watching baseball; the family’s numerous large and doting dogs; sailing and boating; reading to his grandchildren; gathering and laughing with family; making new friends and reconnecting with old friends. His deep and lasting love for his family will be felt for generations through the legacy of his values and generosity.

In lieu of flowers, the family encourages donations to charitable causes in Jim’s memory. An open house to celebrate Jim's life will be held Saturday, January 16, 2016 from 11 a.m. - 3 p.m. at Jim and Sally's home.

Sylvester “Syl” Frontczak Estes Park resident “Syl” Frontczak died at home Friday afternoon, December 4, 2015, at Good Samaritan. He was 85 years old. Sylvester Frontczak was born June 9, 1930 in Milwaukee, WI. His parents were Michael and Mary (Antoniak) Frontczak. In 1948 he enlisted in the United States Army, serving his country in Korea and Vietnam during his 23 year career. On April 27, 1955 he married Mary Dolan at Fort Carson, Colorado Springs, CO. While stationed at Fort Benning in Georgia, he attended the University of Maryland. A passion of his was rifle training for young boys while they were stationed at Fort Ord, CA. After retiring from the Army, Syl was an Industrial Engineer with Storage Tech in Louisville, CO for 17 years while they lived in Boulder, CO for 23 years. He and Mary then moved to Salinas, CA for 10 years where Syl was Commander of the American Legion Post for three years. After moving back to Boulder, CO for a year, the couple moved to Estes Park on October 12, 2007. Syl enjoyed the people and the fellowship of the American Legion and the Wheel Bar. He also attended Our

Lady of the Mountains Catholic Church.

Sylvester is survived by his wife Mary of Estes Park, sons Michael (Nancy) of Louisville, CO; Jim (Amy) of Ravenna, NE; John (Denise) of Perth, Australia and Paul of San Francisco, CA; daughter Mary Beth Frontczak of Holyoke, MA. He is also survived by a sister Eleanor Szymaszek of West Allis, WI, nine grandchildren and nine great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, Danny.

A Mass of the Christian Burial will celebrate Syl’s life on Thursday December 17th at 10:00 a.m. at Our Lady of the Mountains Catholic Church, Estes Park. Graveside Services will take place at Fort Logan National Cemetery in Denver at 2:15 p.m.

Memorial contributions may be made to Catholic Relief Fund, Hospice of Estes Park or the American Cancer Society for Cancer Research in care of Allnutt Funeral Service 1302 Graves Ave. Estes Park, CO 80517.

Virginia Bruce Estes Park resident Virginia Bruce died December 6, 2015 at Prospect Park Living Center. Virginia Bruce was born January 10, 1936 in Cleveland, OH to Angelo Palange and Anna (Kuzmiskey) Smith. She worked for the Chicago Title Company for twenty-five years before moving to College Park, Maryland in 1981, working at the University of Maryland Engineering and Physical Science Library for fifteen years before retiring. Virginia moved to Boulder, CO in 2000 and has resided in Estes Park with her sister Marie Sollod since February 2014. Virginia was a very devout Catholic and had considered becoming a nun. She was also a dress maker, enjoyed music and always received high accolades from work, and was known for being the kindest, sweetest person. Virginia is survived

by her sister Marie Sollod of Estes Park and her cousin Dorothy Laton of Boston, MA. She is also survived by her niece Wendy Sollod (Matt Bezark) and their son Wolf Bezark of Estes Park; nephew Bill Sollod (Melissa) of Columbia MD and their children Max of Columbia, MD and Alexandra of Baltimore, MD; and nephew David Sollod (Karen) and their son Jake of Stevensville, MD. Virginia is preceded in death by her parents.
