Carbon-Free Resources And Your Electricity By: Town of Estes Park Utilities Director Reuben Bergsten

As your Utilities Director, I serve on the Platte River Power Authority board, the not-for-profit utility that generates and delivers safe, reliable, environmentally responsible and competitively priced energy and services to its owner communities of Estes Park, Fort Collins, Longmont and Loveland.

Platte River has a strong record in acquiring carbon-free resources, being the first utility in the region to provide wind energy to customers in Colorado and more than tripling its wind and solar supply since 2013. More than onethird of the electricity supply to the owner municipalities comes from noncarbon resources (hydropower, wind and solar). We’re proud to say that this ranks among the highest levels provided by wholesale electric suppliers in the Rocky Mountain region and is about twice the national average.

Platte River is studying the feasibility and cost of deploying significant amounts of noncarbon energy – even developing a case study of a portfolio that provides zero net carbon (ZNC) energy – to the owner municipalities by 2030. Results from the ZNC modeling will be posted to www.prpa.org Dec. 7.

Also on Dec. 7, Platte River will present the results at a town hall meeting beginning at 3 p. m. at the Fort Collins Hilton. The following week, on Dec. 12, the same information will be presented to the Estes Park community at the Town Board study session at Town Hall. I’d like to take this opportunity to share some frequently asked questions and responses from Platte River: Why are you doing this?

Our Board of Directors proactively pursues diversification of energy resources. In July, the Board agreed to evaluate the feasibility of pursuing a zero net carbon electricity supply for all of our owner communities.

What do you want to determine?

The question we want to address is how to move further along the continuum toward a generation system with less carbon intensity – from fossil fueled sources to primarily noncarbon sources – in a financially sustainable and reliable manner. We will balance cost, reliability, and environmental impacts over the long term – to provide our owner communities with the best possible value.

This study, as well as custom resource plan (CRP) studies initiated in early 2017, will provide the information needed to help us make informed decisions regarding the region’s energy future.

Can we have all the carbon-free energy we want?

We recognize that our owner communities have varied motivations for exploring alternative energy solutions and diverse expectations from Platte River.

Results of our study will provide us with information concerning the feasibility of delivering 100 percent carbon-free energy to each owner community.

How might a “zero net carbon� model

impact costs for electricity?

A zero net carbon portfolio would raise the cost of power. Determining the production costs for electricity under a ZNC portfolio is one of the primary goals of our modeling efforts and will be included in the study results.

Will the modeling consider system reliability?

System reliability will always be one of the top priorities for Platte River and will be incorporated into our modeling efforts.

What happens next and how can I participate?

In 2018, Estes Park Light & Power and Platte River will be gathering customer feedback and engaging in transparent dialogue on the modeling results.

It is important to note that no changes to your service or electricity will result from this study. This study will only evaluate the feasibility of pursuing a zero net carbon electricity supply by 2030. The study is the first step and more analysis will be done before making changes to our resource portfolio.

We benefit from Platte River’s economy of scale when purchasing carbonfree energy resources, and that requires collaboration and compromise with the other Platte River communities. Platte River’s long-term plans are determined by the Platte River Board, with Mayor Jirsa and me representing Estes Park, and result from a deliberative and transparent process that includes public outreach and input.

Frequently Asked Questions Regarding Senior Services At Estes Valley Community Center 1. How are the Town of Estes Park and its Senior Services Division involved in the Estes Valley Community Center (EVCC)?

The Town of Estes Park is a supporting partner in the EVCC. Senior services will be offered at the EVCC when it opens, tentatively February 2018. As facility owner, Estes Valley Recreation and Park District (EVRPD) will manage senior services, as determined in a 2016 public process. The Town's current Senior Services program coordinators will transition to the EVCC, along with the Town's Senior Center van.

2. How is the Town helping to fund the EVCC? In 2014, voters approved a 1% sales tax on goods sold in Estes Park from 2014 to 2024. About $5 million (25%) of this revenue is earmarked to assist EVRPD in the construction of the EVCC, including facilities for senior services.

3. How long will the Town offer Senior Services?

As determined in 2016, The Town will offer Senior Services and lunches at the current Senior Center through Dec. 31, 2017. After that time the Town will cease providing meals, though the Senior Center will remain open for limited hours throughout January.

4. What will happen to the partnership between the Town and Estes Park Senior Citizens Center, Inc. (EPSCCI)?

As determined in 2016, the memorandum of understanding (MOU) between the Town and EPSCCI will terminate at the end of January because the Town will no longer be providing Senior Services.

5. What will be offered for seniors at the EVCC? EVRPD is excited to build a 70,000square-foot, multigenerational facility that will serve all members of and visitors to the Estes Valley community. Several services and amenities will be ideal for active adults and seniors, including lifelong learning programs, health and wellness programs, fitness classes, social programs, safety programs, a weekly lunch program, and the current senior services-dedicated staff. Per the MOU

with the Town, EVRPD established a senior advisory committee to help direct the programs and amenities specific to the needs of the senior population, and established priority senior service space from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily.

In addition to the senior services programs, which will be continued in a similar fashion as currently offered at the Senior Center, there are also a multitude of free amenities at the EVCC. These free amenities include hot coffee daily, two-lane walking/running track, community areas, game room with pool table, games and puzzles, outside seating area with views of the Rocky Mountains, access to senior lounge, and Wi-Fi throughout the building.

Membership comparison 6. Will meals be offered at the EVCC? As a pilot program, EVRPD will offer meals one day per week. The facility includes a commercial kitchen, which can be used by a food service contractor if funding became available for future lunches.

7. What will happen to Meals on Wheels?

Beginning in 2018, Meals on Wheels will be offered by Crossroads Ministry.

The Town plans to provide financial support to this program.

8. What will happen to the Senior Center facility?

At an early 2018 study session, the Town Board is expected to consider proposals for the use of the Town of Estes Park's facility on Fourth Street. Proposals currently include museum collections storage, child care facility, events complex breakout space, and use by Estes Park Senior Citizens Center, Inc. (a nonprofit corporation).

Go Behind The Scenes With Citizen’s Police Academy Anyone who has ever wondered what it’s like behind the scenes at the Estes Park Police Department can find out by attending the 2018 Citizen’s Police Academy. This informative series of classes, sponsored by the Town’s Police Department and offered free of charge, will take place Jan. 8 - Feb. 8, 2018. Community Input Needed On Downtown Parking Management Plan Draft available in December; final open house takes place Dec. 7 Help shape Estes Park’s Downtown Parking Management Plan at the final project open house Dec. 7 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. in the Town Board Room in Town Hall, 170 MacGregor Ave. All community members, business owners and other stakeholders are encouraged to come and learn about the process and share their ideas. The primary purpose of the open house is to provide an opportunity for community members to learn and provide feedback on the draft Downtown Parking Management Plan. Prospective Town Trustee Candidates Invited To Roundtable Discussion Dec. 7 The Town of Estes Park will hold a Municipal Election Tuesday, April 3, 2018, to elect three seats on the Estes Park Town Board of Trustees. Registered electors 18 years of age or older may become a candidate and hold office if they have resided inside Town limits for at least 12 consecutive months immediately preceding the election. To assist individuals who may be interested in becoming a candidate, Mayor Todd Jirsa and Trustee Patrick Martchink will hold a roundtable discussion Thursday, Dec. 7, 2017, from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. in Rooms 202 and 203 of Town Hall, 170 MacGregor Ave. During the discussion, the elected officials will answer common questions including, “What are the day-to-day expectations of a trustee?” “What is the time investment required to be a successful board member?” “What are the challenges?” And, “What are some of the

benefits?” The meeting will also provide an opportunity for prospective candidates to ask specific questions about holding the office of trustee.

National Park Service Extends Public Comment Period For Proposed Peak-Season Entrance Fees At 17 Parks The National Park Service has extended the public comment periods for proposed peak-season entrance fees at 17 national parks and revised fees for roadbased commercial tours and will accept comments until December 22, 2017. If implemented, the increased fees would generate needed revenue for improvements to the aging infrastructure of national parks.

The deadlines, originally scheduled for November 23, have been extended to accommodate interest in this issue from members of Congress and the public. Already, more than 65,000 comments have been received on the proposals.

Under the proposal, peak-season entrance fees would be established at 17 highly visited national parks. The peak season for each park would include its busiest contiguous five-month period of visitation. The peak season entrance fee for a seven-day pass to each park would be $70 per private, non-commercial vehicle, $50 per motorcycle, and $30 per person on bike or foot. A park-specific annual pass for any of the 17 parks would be available for $75.

The cost of the annual America the Beautiful- The National Parks and Federal Recreational Lands Pass, which provides entrance to all federal lands, including all national parks for a one-year period, would remain $80. Entrance fees are not charged to visitors under 16 years of age or holders of Senior, Military, Access, Volunteer, or Every Kid in a Park (EKIP) passes. The majority of national parks will remain free to enter; only 118 of 417 parks have an entrance fee.

The proposed new fee structure would be implemented at Arches, Bryce Canyon, Canyonlands, Denali, Glacier, Grand Canyon, Grand Teton, Olympic, Sequoia & Kings Canyon, Yellowstone, Yosemite, and Zion National Parks with peak season starting on May 1, 2018; in Acadia, Mount Rainier, Rocky Mountain, and Shenandoah National Parks with peak season starting on June 1, 2018; and in Joshua Tree National Park as soon as practicable in 2018.

Fees have long been an important source of revenue used to improve the visitor experience and recreation opportunities in national parks and on other federal lands. Estimates suggest that the peak season price structure could increase national park revenue by $70 mil-

lion per year. The funds would be used to improve roads, bridges, campgrounds, waterlines, bathrooms, and other amenities which enhance the visitor experience. Under the Federal Lands Recreation Enhancement Act, 80% of entrance fees remain in the park where they are collected. The other 20% of the revenue is distributed to other national parks.

Access to the vast majority of National Park Service sites remains free; only 118 of 417 National Park Service units charge an entrance fee.

The public can comment period on the peak-season entrance fee proposal until December 22, 2017, on the NPS Planning, Environment and Public Comment (PEPC) website https://parkplanning.nps.gov/proposedpeakseasonfeerates. The public comment period for proposed entry and permit fee adjustments for commercial tour operators has also been extended until December 22. The proposal would increase entry fees for commercial operators and standardize commercial use authorization (CUA) requirements for road-based commercial tours, including application and management fees. All CUA fees stay within the collecting park and would fund rehabilitation projects for buildings, facilities, parking lots, roads, and wayside exhibits that would enhance the visitor experience. The fees will also cover the administrative costs of receiving, reviewing, and processing CUA applications and required reports.

The proposal also includes a peak-season commercial entry fee structure for the 17 national parks referenced above.

All proposed fee adjustments for commercial operators would go into effect following an implementation window.

The charge(s) are merely an accusation and the defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.

On November 19 at 2:36 a.m. police were called to a physical disturbance at 2390 Larkspur Ave. On scene police charged two Estes Park residents, one 52 years old and the other 53 years old, with domestic violence and harassment

and transported both to Larimer County Detention Center.

On November 22 at 7:09 a.m. police arrested a 22 year old male from Estes Park at 132 E. Elkhorn and charged him with unlawfully entering a vehicle, third degree burglary and theft. He was transported to Larimer County Detention Center.

Holiday Used Book Sale December 1 & 2 Book lovers and holiday gift hunters will enjoy this season’s offerings at the annual Holiday Used Book Sale, hosted by the Estes Valley Library Friends & Foundation. This year’s special sale will take place on Friday, December 1 and Saturday, December 2 inside the Library’s Hondius Community Room. The sale is held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. both days and is free and open to the public.

The Holiday Sale features gently-used books that are especially suitable for giftgiving, including good-condition hardbacks, coffee table books, children’s books, mysteries, cookbooks, along with DVDs and music CDs. Shoppers will also have an opportunity to create custom gift-wrapping for their book purchases (or other gift items) on Saturday, December 2 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. The library will have a creativity table set up that day allowing hands-on creation of custom gift-wrap paper, as well as make-and-take gift bags and tags.

Elbow to elbow, forearm to forearm, hands interlocked, you’ll need to put some gut into your push to win the battle against this enthusiastic armwrestler.

At eight years old, Riley is a Superhero. In a Spiderman T-shirt, Incredible Hulk sweatpants, and Ninja Turtle underwear underneath, Riley plays the part as much as possible (but also looks quite dapper in a necktie and button-down shirt for an afternoon at the symphony).

Riley would just as soon say hello with a punch to your stomach as to give you a hug (but a hug will come if you ask nicely). Sharing a fist-pump with stepfather Jack, Riley says, “Jack is my best bro! ” (If only all stepkids would take so well to their stepparents!)

Put this kid in front of a Nintendo and it’s all business. No neighbor boy who comes over to play can beat Riley at Mario Kart—and you’ll hear about it, not from the other kids but certainly from Riley.

I bought some popcorn from Cub Scout Riley, who is as proud and excited to wear the crisp-blue-shirt-with-yellow-kerchief uniform as Grandpa was at that age.

(Grandpa became an Eagle Scout. Perhaps Riley will achieve that badge of honor as well.)

To give the full picture, I need to say that Riley has a tenderhearted, sensitive side too.

While running a hand lightly along the curly hair on Grandpa’s arm, Riley asked earnestly, “Does this tickle, Grampa?” When a second grade classmate got frustrated because his computer earphones wouldn’t work, Riley whispered to the teacher’s aide empathetically, “He didn’t get to have recess today, ” and then said to the classmate, “Here. You can have mine.”

My buddy creates amazing artwork, and music is a favorite class in school. When deciding which summer enrichment class to take, Riley chose to perform in the musical “Stone Soup. ” And afterward went to karate, and then to basketball practice.

Riley is competitive, rambunctious, and bathroom humor ranks right up there with the Grossest Ice Cream Sundae Challenge as

the most entertaining thing since snot-flavored Jelly Bellies.

Riley has never worn hair longer than ear level (a modified Mohawk is preferred) and has never worn a dress since old enough to have a say about it. Why would he?

Because Riley was born female. But Riley has never been a girl. Everything about Riley is all boy and always has been.

His classmates don’t care about gender, they just like Riley because he’s a good kid. His mom suggested Riley go to the nurse’s office to use the restroom, which works out fine.

He has supportive parents who couldn’t make Riley be a girl even if they wanted to.

But they don’t. Riley is a grounded, well-adjusted young person. He’s smart, he’s fun and he’s funny. I hope it stays that way as he grows up and faces prejudice from people who will insist he should be prissy in a pink skirt.

I know it’s hard for some people to wrap their heads around this concept of nontraditional gender identity. But if you look at Riley and watch his behavior, it doesn’t take long to be convinced that if Riley were forced to be a girl, his spirit would wither and die.

Riley has asked for several years to be referred to as “he.” Once it became obvious this wasn’t a passing phase in life, his parents agreed to make the switch and requested friends and family do the same. It has taken awhile but we’ve managed, and Riley is a happier youngster because if it. Why deny him happiness? He isn’t hurting a soul.

Of course none of us knows what will transpire as Riley matures. Bullying? An operation? True love? What we do know is that Riley simply cannot be a girl. Riley is a boy. His fart jokes and belching, his easy apology when he recognizes that he’s hurt your feelings, his honesty, his wish to be treated with respect and love—it is all pure Riley, and I adore him.

Estes Valley Aquatics Center Will Reopen December 4, 2017 Estes Valley Recreation and Park District (EVRPD), provider of numerous recreational and community activities in Estes Valley, is excited to announce the reopening of the Estes Valley Aquatics Center (EVAC) on December 4, 2017.

To celebrate the reopening, EVRPD is offering a few free options. Lap swim times and fitness classes will be free December 4 to 8.

There will be a free open swim on December 19 and December 21.

The EVAC closed on May 19, 2017 to perform required maintenance, begin remodeling of the facility and to connect it to the new Estes Valley Community Center. Due to a few delays during the discovery phase of construction, the opening was delayed but additional improvements were added to the project. “We were disappointed to see the 33year-old building needed more attention than we anticipated but were happy we could make all of the necessary repairs along with adding some new upgrades,� said Tom Carosello, Executive Director of Estes Valley Recreation and Park District. “We upgraded and remodeled the locker rooms, installed a new HVAC system to help reduce the temperature and humidity levels in the building, installed a new sound system, resurfaced the pool deck, and installed new ceiling fans and brighter LED lights.�

Built in 1984, the Estes Valley Aquatics Center offered the community of and visitors to Estes Park a year-round option for swimming. It also provided a facility for the Estes Park High School swim and dive team for practice and competitions.

Over the years, however, the pool has

been whipped by wind, pecked by northern flickers and seen a lot of use. “The remodel and repairs were a necessary part of making the aquatics facility part of the new community center,� said Teresa Jackson, Manager of Community Center Operations. “But that meant we were able to not only make the necessary

repairs but update many of the outdated features of the building such as the audio system, the records board, pump room and more.�

The pool will reopen at 6 a.m. on Monday, December 4, 2017. Passholders that have punches left on their cards will be able to use those towards swim time starting December 4. New memberships or renewals can be purchased at the Estes Valley Aquatics Center, located at 660 Community Drive in Estes Park, during business hours.

Frequently Asked Questions about the Town's holiday light displays Everyone is always curious about the Town's holiday light displays. Here are some answers to our most frequently asked questions. We hope you enjoy this year's displays.

How much planning is involved each year?

Planning for the current year's light display begins in March. The design is a collaboration between the Light & Power and Parks Divisions. This year, the Light & Power crews tagged the trees downtown, making it easier for the lighting contractor to get started. The contractor started hanging lights Oct. 1 to ensure everything was ready for the Tree-Lighting Ceremony last weekend.

How have the decorations changed since last year?

We kept the same total number of decorated trees, but we changed a few of the locations a bit this year. We also added additional canopy lights in several places around downtown.

Where are the lights hung?

The light displays are concentrated

along Elkhorn Avenue and George Hix Riverside Plaza (a.k.a. Confluence Park), running from the intersection of U.S. 36 and Highway 7 west to Tregent Park.

How many lights and strands are used in the displays?

This year we used 4,300 feet of green strings, 2,700 feet of blue string (not counting the light poles on Elkhorn Avenue), 4,300 feet of purple string, 4,800 feet of small white string, and 13,000 feet of canopy globe lights. The bulbs are placed every 12 inches on the small and medium lights, and every 24 inches on the canopy lights. This equals 4,300 green lights, 2,700 blue lights, 4,700 purple lights, 4,800 white lights, and 6,500 globe lights.

How about other decorations?

We also place lighted trees on street lights along U.S. 34, U.S. 36 and Highway 7. The four large Buel Porter displays -- the Card Shop, Christmas in Bugville, The Old Woman in the Shoe and Santa Claus have returned to their usual locations.

Local Businesses Should Pre-Certify For 2018 Enterprise Zone Tax Credits For 2018, nearly all businesses in southwest Larimer County, including the Estes Valley are eligible for Colorado state income tax credits when they create new jobs, invest in certain business property and job training, and other developmental activities that are encouraged under the state's Enterprise Zone program. Below is a map that shows the extent of the Estes Park Enterprise Zone.

Local businesses could benefit from thousands of dollars of state income tax credits when they invest in expanding their business. Potential tax credits include investment tax credits for equipment (3%) or vehicle (1.5%) purchases, a job training tax credit (12.5% for qualified expenses), a new employee tax credit of $1,100 per job, and the employer sponsored health insurance credit ($1,000 per employee)

There is a catch, though. In order to qualify for these credits, eligible businesses must pre-certify on or before December 31, 2017—or risk losing some or all of these potential tax credits for 2018.

For each tax year, the business’s eligibility to claim EZ credits is from the point of approved pre-certification or the start of the income tax year, whichever is later, through the end of the income tax year entered by the user.

You should check with your tax advisor to ensure they are filing a pre-certification on your behalf. You can also file the pre-certification yourself. The Office of Economic Development and International Trade (OEDIT) maintains an online portal to electronically file these pre-certifications at http://choosecolorado.com/doing-business/incentives-financing/ez/

Boy Scouts Selling Christmas Trees Once again, the Boy Scouts will be selling Christmas trees starting Friday, November 24 at the Estes Park Lumber Store. We will have farm trees, as well as fresh cut trees. Also new this year, we will be selling wreaths that we can decorate for you, or sell it plain so you can decorate it yourself.

Repertoire Theater Company Weekend Production Of “The Kitchen Witches”

The Estes Park Repertoire Theatre Company proudly announces the first production of our 2017-2018 theatre season.

“The Kitchen Witches” by Caroline Smith will be performed this weekend, December 1st, 2nd, and 3rd at the newly redecorated “Community Room’ at the American Legion Post 119 building at 850 N. St. Vrain in Estes Park, Colorado.

Produced by special arrangement with Samuel French, Inc. The Friday and Saturday productions on December 1st and 2nd will have a 7:00 p.m. curtain and the Sunday, December 3rd will have a 2:00 p.m. curtain.

The Friday evening December 1st show will have a “dinner and show” feature.

The meal, at an extra cost will be provided by the Legion members.

The Kitchen Witches” is an adult comedy which tells the story of Isobel Lomax and Dolly Biddle who are two “mature” cable-access cooking show hostesses who have hated each other for 30 years,

ever since Larry Biddle dated one and married the other. When circumstances put them together on a TV show called “The Kitchen Witches,” the insults are flung harder than the food! Dolly’s longsuffering TV-producer daughter Stephanie tries to keep them on track, but as long as Dolly’s dressing room is one inch closer to the set than Isobel’s, it’s a losing battle, and the show becomes a rating smash as Dolly and Isobel top both Martha Stewart and Jerry Springer!

Dolly Biddle is played by C. J. Jenson, Isobel Lomax is played by Christann Higley, Stephanie Biddle is played by Elizabeth Potter, Ron is played by Rik Forschmiedt and the Stage Hand is Sallie Brackman.

Estes Park Welcomes Gina Vinge & Infinity, A Salon

Those in need of a haircut, hair color, lash extensions, nail polish, waxing, and more now have a new salon to visit in Estes Park: Infinity, owned by Gina Vinge. Gina, who moved here with her family last year, has 19 years of experience in the industry and is excited to be bringing her education and skills to the Estes area.

“It is such a thrill to be joining this wonderful community,” Gina said. “I have had a full schedule for many years [in Minnesota] and haven’t had much time to take new clients. The idea of being able to build a new clientele list and be creative is very exciting!”

Gina specializes in haircuts and coloring and practices European haircutting and layering techniques. She has lots of experience with weddings and special occasions; she is also extensively trained in waxing, Brazilian blowouts, nails and eyelash extensions. “I have been asked many times what my favorite service is,” Gina shared. “I don’t really have a single favorite because I love the versatility of being able to do a little of everything.”

In the salon, Gina uses a variety of high quality products for her services. Moroccan Oil is her choice of hair care, which she’s been using for almost eleven years and loves because it is adaptable to all

hair types. It keeps the integrity of hair first, and “the smell is amazing!” For color, Gina uses Redkin for hair and Intensive for eyebrow and eyelash because it is the longest lasting and highest quality color. Nufree wax is her choice for waxing, because it is not beeswax and instead is soybean based, which means there is no skin lifting and very little sensitivity. For nails, products include CND Brisa gel, as well as Gelish and OPI gel polishes, and she uses LED lights to cure all polish treatments. Gina is certified through Lavish Lashes in California for her eyelash extensions.

“They have medical grade eyelash glue so it is perfectly safe to be used around the eyes,” she shared.

A few locals have found their way into Infinity to try Gina’s services, and already they are raving. “Gina is incredibly skilled and obviously expertly trained,” said Laura Shepard, Estes Park resident.

“She gave me an amazing haircut and I also love how she really took her time and made me feel important.”

Gina and her husband Derek have four children: Liah, who lives in Minnesota and visits often; Cole, who is a senior at Estes Park High School, Finnegan, who is a first grader at Estes Park Elementary, and Killian, who in kindergarten at EPES. “I already love Estes for so many reasons,” Gina said. “Most of all, it is so peaceful here and I am just really glad our family decided to make Estes home.”

It happened Tuesday, November 21 at the Estes Park Elementary School, when every class not only learned about, but personally observed a variety of raptors up-close and personal.

Thanks to grants from the Estes Park Non-profit Resource Center's Youth In Action organization and the Village Thrift Shop, MISSION: New Earth, an Estes Valley non-profit, based in Allenspark, Colorado, was able to bring Hawk Quest's Birds of Prey program to the school.

During the program, students learned the importance of different raptor species, their specially-adapted tools, and their role in our ecosystems. Featured species included a Common Barn Owl, a Peregrine falcon, a Bald Eagle and a freeflying Harris's Hawk.

"MISSION: New Earth's objective," according to Weldon Lee, the organization's Board president, "is to create a new earth where wildlife is safe and it is no

longer necessary to protect them."

"We are confident," Lee continues, "that we can accomplish this by creating opportunities where children can make meaningful connections with our wild brothers and sisters. Love generated out of these connections will grow and blossom as the children mature. People will not destroy something they love.�

"It doesn’t stop with the younger children," Lee adds, "older children and teenage youth, with adult supervision, learn leadership skills as they work with and teach the younger children."

MISSION: New Earth is currently recruiting board members who share their passion for both wildlife, and working with children. If you fall into that category, they would love to hear from you.

PRESUMED GUILTY UNTIL PROVEN INNOCENT He was a young man placed in a position of trust. He had something that a woman wanted. She tried to get it. He refused, so she accused him of trying to take advantage of her sexually. Without further investigation he was cast into prison where he languished for some time. lf you know your Bible you probably recognize the story of Joseph.

One wonders how often Joseph’s story is being repeated in our society today as accusations are being lodged against many who have worked to earn positions of trust only to be derailed by accusations, usually without concrete evidence or witnesses that they were, like Potiphar’s wife claimed, ‘touched’ or ‘harassed’. Unlike in Joseph’s case, none seem to be pursuing a relationship with the accused, but there is money, attention, sympathy or other things that can be gained if these accusations are believed.

My purpose is not to question all of these accusations. We all know that there are ‘predators’ and ‘womanizers’ in our society. They need to be called out and answer for wrong actions. I simply want to remind us of the danger of accusing someone when one ‘senses’‌ often many years later‌that they were mistreated, accusations that often lead to the destructions of careers, service, marriages, families, or worse. God ‘hates’ and will punish ‘all liars’, especially those who level false accusations that destroy others.

Don was a friend of mine. He was an elderly, highly respected farmer in a small town in Nebraska. All knew him as a quiet man that would never ‘hurt a fly’‌well, maybe a pheasant in season once in a while. He and I knocked down a few on his land. One day Don asked about an item that had been placed on a shelf high up in a local convenience store. The female clerk moved up behind him as he pointed it out. As he withdrew his pointing arm his elbow bumped her breast. She yelled, “You dirty old man. You did that on purpose. I’m going to tell my boss!â€?

Shaken, he walked out of the store, followed soon after by the manager loudly accusing him, on the street, in front of longtime friends. Don knew that any touch was an accident, but who would believe him? He went home and told his wife what had happened. Barb assured him people who knew him would never believe such an action was deliberate. She continued her knitting.

After pacing back and forth, Don said, “I’m going to get some air.â€? As he exited, Barb didn’t notice him grab the shotgun that leaned against the door frame. Shortly, she heard the blast. A woman likely will answer to God‌our righteous Judge‌for a good man’s death that day.

How many relationships and lives have been destroyed because someone’s innocent ‘touch’ or comment made someone ‘uncomfortable’ and the ‘presumed guilty’ person was labeled as a ‘predator’ or ‘dirty old man’ or ???‌and a life destroyed?

It happens in other areas as well. Another friend learned recently that accident claims had been filed against him, with insurance payments made to people in distant states, without asking him. Had he been asked they would have known that such claims were false. They paid ‘damages’ (twice to the same out-of-state claimant years apart), then raised my friend’s insurance rates, because of false accusations. That is so wrong!

The Bible says, “At the word of two or three witnesses�. Society says: “Innocent until proven guilty�. However, these are sadly disregarded as accusations are made, some true, some false. We can’t control that. But we can determine to be careful before passing judgment. Also, before believing such accusations, let’s do the same.

Senior Center To Host Annual Holiday Feast December 18

Tickets on sale December 1 Tickets for the Senior Center’s annual Holiday Feast will go on sale Friday, December 1 at the Estes Park Senior Center, 220 Fourth Street. The event will be held at the Senior Center on Monday, December 18. Light hors d’oeuvres will be available at 11:30 a.m. and the meal will be served at noon. Tickets are $6.50 for members of Estes Park Senior Citizens Center, Inc. or $8.50 for non-members. Advance ticket purchase is required for this event as seating is limited. Tickets must be purchased before 4:00 p.m. on Friday, December 15.

Kris Larsen, Congressional Candidate In Estes Park

Kris Larsen, Democratic Candidate for the 2nd Congressional District on the 2018 ballot, will be in Estes Park on Sunday, December 10, at 4:30 p.m. to meet with voters and answer questions about his run for the U. S. Congress. This event will be held at Elkins Distilling Co., 1825 North Lake Avenue, Estes Park. It is free and open to the public.

Kris is currently Mayor of Nederland and a planetary scientist at the University of Colorado. A Colorado native, Kris studied Physics and Astrophysics at C. U., and ultimately obtained his Ph. D. in Planetary Sciences at Washington University in St. Louis. He returned to Colorado to work as a research scientist at the Laboratory for Atmospheric and Space Physics.

While working as a research scientist, Kris became convinced that scientists needed to be more involved in the political process and policy setting. He then

went to Washington D. C. to focus on science education policy, federal research funding and community organizing to involve physicists in policy matters.

His experience on the national stage led Kris to become more involved in local Colorado issues. He volunteered with, and then served as chair of Nederland’s advisory boards (trails, parks, open space, and planning commission), ultimately winning election as trustee and Mayor. During his time as Mayor of Nederland, Kris became one of many Mayors in Colorado and across the country to sign a pledge to honor the commitment of the Paris Climate Accords.

In addition, Kris as Mayor has worked on actions to significantly increase use of renewable energy sources and to institute a living wage for workers in order to address the rising cost of living along the Front Range.

In his run for the Congressional seat now held by Jared Polis, Kris is emphasizing supporting progressive policies in Congress, particularly with regard to climate change, healthcare, and the basic foundations of our democratic republic.

Advent Tea, Bazaar And Krautburgers!

Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church will hold their annual Advent Tea, Bazaar and Lunch this Saturday, December 2 from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. in their Christian Family Center on Highway 36 and 2nd Street.

A tea table with Christmas cookies, coffee and tea will be available for all to enjoy while shopping for baked goods, holiday decorations and their famous kraut burgers. The ladies have made plenty for sale. You can call Cheryl

There will be special tables from Lutheran Bethesda Communities with many hand crafted items, especially fabric items. Proceeds from these tables will benefit Lutheran group homes in the Denver area. The Community Prayer Quilters of Estes Park will also have hand crafted items for sale.

Gail McLain 515 Grand Estates The original portion of Gail’s home was built in 1960-62. In 2000 Docter Construction added a lovely log interior addition. The home has a southern exposure with several spring fed ponds and a gazebo and is within walking distance to the Lake Estes Trail.

Terry & Tim VanRyn 1382 Deer Path Court The VanRyns lived in Denver for 25 years and in 2005 purchased a condo in Estes Park. They spent the next ten years vacationing here and in early 2015 they purchased this home and decided to live here permanently.

Tim still commutes to north Denver daily for work.

This home was built by Rich and Sara Wille in 2005 in the Craftsman style. Architects on the home were Seaver Franks from Tucson, AZ. VanRyn’s gorgeous home is 4,000 square feet consisting of four bedrooms and two and a half bathrooms. They have two fireplaces and extensive attention to detail can be seen throughout the home in the tile work, woodwork, built-ins, lighting, stained glass and cabinetry.

There are several rooms that have been wallpapered with reproduction wallpaper from the Arts and Crafts period.

Several quilts are displayed on the walls throughout the home, along with an antique treadle Singer sewing machine in the hallway. Their most treasured quilt is one that was made by Terry’s great-grandmother in the late 1800s. It is a crazy quilt which is embroidered with the names of women that worked on the quilt throughout the years. There is also a beautiful award-winning quilt that was made by Terry, hanging in the front room.

The couples favorite Christmas decor can be found in the living room. They have a collection of lighted houses from Department 56 which is a collection of buildings from the ancient days of the Holy Land entitled, “Little Town of Bethlehem.” The scene depicts the manger, the inn, the carpenters shop and others, on sand and rocks amongst cedar and palm trees. They love celebrating the true meaning of Christmas and have at least one nativity scene in every room.

The home is in the Reserve neighborhood which has a wildlife easement running through it. Large herds of elk visit the neighborhood frequently. Terry and Tim fully enjoy their views of the Continental Divide and Lumpy Ridge.

Cindy & John Minier 2725 Devil’s Gulch Road Cindy has been coming to Estes Park since she was born and John spent many summers here as well.

When the couple found this property in 2014, the both felt they should make Estes Park their home.

Their home was originally built in 1971. Unfortunately, the previous owners suffered a house fire in 2013. Cindy and John purchased the eight acre property in 2014 and tore down the remaining structure and using the existing foundation, started rebuilding in 2015. They worked with builder Mike Aldrich and designer Kathy Clarke on this home and John and Cindy did quite a bit of the work themselves which meant they poured their hearts into this home. It soon became their dream home as they kept saying “yes” to all sorts of upgrades.

The home is 3,800 square feet plus a three car garage. It has three bedrooms, three baths and three fireplaces, one of which is a wood-burning two-story masonry fireplace which was part of the original house, and two gas burning fireplaces. Cindy and John fell in love with old barn board and used it as accents throughout their lovely home. The flooring in the great room is reclaimed hardwood while the bedrooms are carpeted. John’s mancave in the walkout basement is cozy and inviting and a must-see!

Cindy and John are retired and their home is perfect for entertaining and for hosting over-night guests. Their views of Longs Peak, Twin Sisters and the town of Estes are stunning!

Christmas is their favorite time of year and over the years they have collected numerous decorations which have all found a place in their new home. One new addition is their 12 foot tall Christmas tree.

Their favorite is an angel tree, full of angel ornaments and a “cloud” boa, which has moved with them throughout the years.

Cynthia & Tom Burt 699 Findley Court Tom and Cynthia visited Estes Park 35 years ago and they fell in love with our town, the wildlife, the mountains and the people and decided they wanted to live here. They built their home ten years ago and just finished an eight month remodeling project. Their original home was built by Westover Construction and Roger Thorp was their architect. Their remodeling project was done by B & E Builders, Inc. The home is moss rock with log accents. They have great views of the town and the Continental Divide.

The Burt’s gorgeous home has three bedrooms and three and a half baths and is approximately 4,000 square feet. The floors are hickory and the walls and ceilings have log accents. The fireplace is moss rock and built by Brian Belleau.

The home has a bunk room for their grandkids and a guest room for visitors. They live here full time and Tom has an in home office for his CPA practice. Cynthia owns the “Bear Necessities and Cubs” shop downtown.

In the home you’ll see quite a few family antiques including a rug that dates back to 1900. They have a small collection of Western art and a family silver chest that dates to the mid 1800s. Their favorite collection is their family photographs.

The Burt’s holiday decorations are a collection of ones they have purchased combined with some cherished ones from parents and grandparents.

Reliance Fire Museum Doug & Cheryl Klink 460 Elm Like many young children, Doug Klink was fascinated by trains and fire engines. Those childhood interests became his life’s work, and are on display at The Reliance Fire Museum, 460 Elm Road, a special stop on the 2017 Quota Club Holiday Home Tour.

Visitors will be able to tour the fire museum, which features more than 20 pieces of fire apparatus ranging from a 1901 horse-drawn Waterous Steamer to a 1958 Pirsch aerial ladder truck from Beverly Hills, CA. A large O-scale train layout, complete with Christmasthemed accessories, will be operating, along with a Christmas tree featuring train-related decorations.

Along with the museum’s collection of antique fire engines, there is a large display of fire service related Christmas decorations, including a collection of fireman Santas, nutcrackers, Christmas Village buildings, and a firefighter-themed Christmas tree. And you might even see Santa getting ready to deliver presents in his 1944 Allis-Chalmers M7 Snow Tractor, which was used by the Milwaukee Fire Department for rescue operations in heavy snow.

Doug and his wife Cheryl and their two children, Jennifer and Douglas, moved to Estes Park from the Kansas City area in 2002, where Doug was an entrepreneur and business owner. In 1985, he founded TSM, a company that developed, manufactured and serviced electronics for the railroad industry.

The Reliance Fire Museum was established in 1994 as a 501(c)3 non-profit educational organization. Doug has been a volunteer fire fighter for more than 35 years, and currently serves as a driver/engineer and the president of the Estes Valley Fire Protection District. After the sale of TSM in 1996, he began to devote more time to his hobby of restoring antique fire engines. Through word-of-mouth, his hobby turned into a business. He and his employee Mike Edwards work full-time restoring antique fire engines for fire departments and collectors throughout the country. The complete restoration of a 1926 Ahrens Fox fire engine from Kansas City was featured on the PBS series, Ultimate Restorations, and can be viewed through Amazon Prime’s video streaming service.

Estes Wild Child Holiday Open House With Ballet Renaissance Benefit Bake Sale Estes Park’s Wild Child, located at 1751 N. Lake Avenue, #107, will host a special Holiday Open House on Saturday December 2nd from 11 a.m. - 5 p.m.

Wild Child was opened this past July by two local educators, and works in partnership with Estes Outreach to host the popular Mad Science after-school club. Wild Child will also be working with the Estes Park library to offer programming to Estes children.

The inspiration for Wild Child came from the owners’ experiences with their own children here in Estes.

“Watching our own three children connect deeply with nature after a move to Estes Park inspired us to find a way to bring that connection to children visiting Estes,” said Erin Hunt, who co-owns the business with her husband Lazlo. “We want to encourage the Estes community to experience Wild Child through the Open House this December 2nd.

Come experience the activities from our Explorer Kits. Make Santa slime. See some of Wild Child’s retail products demonstrated.”

Explorer kits, created and designed especially

by the Hunts, are based on the Estes and RMNP area. Each explorer kit includes activities that children can complete in the Wild Child Learning Lab and an activity that kids can take up into the National Park. Wild Child also offers retail products that are carefully selected to encourage children to experience the world around them and flex their own creativity skills.

The December 2nd Open House will also include a philanthropic bent. The Hunts youngest daughter Lily, with her best friend Emily, will be hosting a

special hot chocolate and bake good sale to benefit local nonprofit Ballet Renaissance. Lily and Emily came up with the idea, all on their own, to give back to the nonprofit that provides them with so much joy. 100% of all proceeds from the sale will be contributed to Ballet Renaissance. Both Lily and Emily have danced with Ballet Renaissance for 2 ½ years.

“Ballet is their favorite activity and the fact that they do it together makes it the highlight of their week,” Erin Hunt shared. “Ballet Renaissance’s non-profit status has influenced all of the Ballet Renaissance dancers to develop a heart of service. One of Emily and Lily’s favorite Ballet Renaissance activities is

dancing with the Boys & Girls Clubs in Estes each summer. They hope that the money they earn will be used to support tuition for local Estes children from the Boys & Girls Clubs to remain dancing with them all year long.”

The December Bake Sale Benefit will actually be Lily and Emily’s second bake sale benefiting Ballet Renaissance. The first was held during the recent Fall 2017 Open House at Wild Child. The two girls baked cookies and cupcakes from scratch and were faithful to their booth all afternoon despite some very sunny weather.

One Ballet Renaissance supporter, Ms. Mary Hammel of St. Clair Shores, Michigan, was so moved by the young girls’ ideas and efforts that she then matched the funds the girls raised at their October sale.

Earthwood Collections Gallery in downtown Estes Park will be presenting Jazz artist, Max Wagner, in a special trio performance of Jazz Standards and Jazz Christmas classics as part of their First Fridays Gallery Opening and Jazz Performance Series. Elkhorn Ave. This final performance of the year will feature: Jazz Saxophonist and vocalist, Max Wagner, has long been delighting audiences with his exceptional artistry.

He is well known for his vibrantly lyrical saxophone playing, signature scat singing, and seamless command of many Jazz styles, as well as his great warmth and humor.

Eric Gunnison - is one of the leading pianists on the international Jazz scene; and is a veteran of work with Dizzy Gillespie, James Moody, Phil Woods, and Jerry Bergonzi.

He was also pianist and musical director for legendary Jazz vocalists, Carmen McCrae and Roberta Gambarini. Eric makes his home in Denver, and has long been one of the cornerstones of the thriving Colorado Jazz scene.

Andrew Rose - is one of the top bassists on the Rocky Mountain Jazz scene, and has become the choice of prominent Jazz artists: Peter Stoltzman, Stu MacAskie, and Bonnie Lowdermilk, among many others. Andrew’s melodic flair and innovative rhythmic approach have distinguished him as a unique talent both as an instrumentalist and as a rhythm section player.

Embrace A Day Of Bell Ringing

Sean Johnson 11th Grade Congratulations to Sean Johnson, Student of the Week for December 2, 2017.

At EPHS, Sean enjoys being a member of Student Council, Major 13 chorale group and the Thespian Society. He also loves acting/performing in the fall musical and spring plays.

Outside of school Sean likes hiking, taking photographs and swimming.

At school Sean is currently taking AP classes and is the secretary of the

Thespian Society while he maintains his 3.7 GPA. Sean’s favorite quote is “The theatre is so endlessly fascinating because it’s so accidental.

It’s so much like life” by Arthur Miller. This quote inspires Sean to keep going forward in a unique way.

After high school Sean plans to attend UNC to study theater or theater education.

Bank of Estes Park Student Legacy Award: In addition to being awarded the Student of the Week, each winner will be given the opportunity to nominate the school program of their choice for the chance to win $500. At the end of the school year, one such nomination will be randomly selected, and that school program will be awarded the $500 Bank of Estes Park Student Legacy Award, in that student's name.

More and more groups and organizations are expressing an interest in embracing a day of bell ringing through the Estes Park Salvation Army Red Kettle Campaign. One day of bell ringing consists of 11 two-hour shifts located at the two Safeway entrances and at the Estes Park Post Office.

This is a great way for members of an organization to bond and to demonstrate their community-mindedness.

Last year, Crossroads Ministry shouldered three full days of bell ringing (33 two-hour shifts), and the Estes Park Police Auxiliary took on one day (11 shifts).

The three Rotary Clubs in Estes Park assume many bell ringing days; however, there are over 200 Estes Park civic organizations, churches, school clubs, nonprofits, sports teams, and groups to help fill the 200+ bell ringing shifts.

Book clubs can partner together and fill an entire day (11- two-hour shifts).

Churches can be represented on a given day (or two) through various members.

Non-profits embrace a day and invite clients who are ready to give back to the

community to sign up for a shift or share a shift.

Everyone benefits: Your organization, EP’s Salvation Army Extension Unit and EP residents experiencing a financial crisis.

This year’s financial goal is $67,300 because numerous Estes Park residents are in a state of emergency and need financial assistance with food, rent, utilities, prescriptions, medical and dental expenses, transportation, gas and more.

Encompassing more than 2.8 million acres in South Dakota, the Pine Ridge Reservation is home to the Oglala Lakota. With few economic lifelines, the 38,000-person indigenous population is among the most impoverished of any reservation, struggling with high unemployment and very low incomes.

Local resident Tim Phelps is helping answer a call for help. In years past, Phelps has been part of an annual Christmas trip to deliver supplies, an effort that had been active for two decades. The annual trips to Pine Ridge have been on hiatus. But this year, Phelps received a call from Pine Ridge asking for help.

The Pine Ridge Reservation residents identified a very specific need: comforters and blankets for the tribal elders.

Those who can help are asked to donate new or near-new comforters and blankets. If not new or in the original packaging, they should be washed and clean. Phelps will be at the Hondius Room in the Estes Valley Library on Saturday, December 9 from 12 noon to 4 p.m. to receive donations and to answer any questions about the trip.

Phelps requests that only comforters and blankets be given for this trip. Due to logistics and limited space, no clothing, food, or other items are able to be delivered on this visit. Donors may also contact Phelps to make a monetary gift, and any proceeds will help offset the transportation costs.

Phelps will be making the delivery to Pine Ridge in time for Christ-

mas.

In addition to the library drop-off on December 9, comforters and blankets are also being accepted at the Stone Cup Cafe at 442 High Street in Lyons. (As a courtesy, donors are asked to refrain from contacting the Stone Cup by phone; instead, direct questions to Phelps’s number below).

The donations will be delivered to the community of Wanblee (Lakota for “golden eagle”), near the community of Potato Creek in Jackson County, South Dakota.

Phelps encourages donors to attach their email address to the comforter or blanket they give, so that a follow-up thank you note can be sent.

Riotte, Louise. Carrots Love Tomatoes: Secrets of Companion Planting for Successful Gardening. (Pownal, VT: Storey Communications Inc., 1975.) I almost forgot about this book, but found it again at the library and remembered how useful it was when I first started gardening on my own in Boulder in the late 1970s. Which plants promote or hinder the growth of others, which deter insect pests in others, plus some hints about increasing yield in a small space with vertical gardening or two-level planting. Has some recipes for pest-deterring sprays using plant leaves, and even lists the benefits of weeds. Kind of fun to dip in and out of this book, which is arranged alphabetically by plant name, with separate chapters on nuts and fruits, pollination, and poisonous plants.

All these books can be found at the Estes Valley Library or from Amazon, or there’s always a letter to Santa! We hope you’ll be inspired by our favorites.

Estes Valley Chamber Singers Present An Estes Christmas 2017

Save this Sunday, December 3rd for a wonderful afternoon of fine choral music. Now in their thirteenth year of bringing the finest in choral music to the Estes Valley, the Estes Valley Chamber Singers will present “An Estes Christmas” at 3 p.m. in the sanctuary of the Presbyterian Community Church of the Rockies.

The singers will perform several wellknown selections, and many new works for the season.

Rich Dixon, Artistic Director and Conductor of the Chamber Singers, has selected pieces that are sure to be pleasing to the audience, and as with all the Chamber Singers concerts, there is something for everyone in this program.

Dan Forrest has created a wonderful setting of John Goss’s traditional carol See Amid the Winter’s Snow, which includes solo violin, wind chimes, cymbal, glockenspiel and piano. Always a seasonal favorite, O Holy Night had been given an unusual a cappella setting by Ken Berg and has become one of the Singers favorites. Another favorite of the Singers is the English Wexford Carol.

Over the years they have performed several settings of this carol. This year’s setting is by Howard Helvey who usually arranges pieces for choir and piano four hands. This arrangement calls for one pianist, but none-the-less, still as demanding as his four hands music.

Rich Dixon’s Mary Did You Know, written specifically for this program, is for a cappella choir and baritone soloist.

The soloist will be the Chamber Singers own Bob Gunn. Those familiar with Rich’s arrangements will be surprised that there is no dissonance or unusual chords in this piece. Sorry, it is all totally harmonic. The program ends with the traditional I Saw Three Ships by Richard Fox. Among the standard concert repertory heard in this concert will be Felix Mendelssohn’s There Shall a Star Come Out of Jacob, Healey Willan’s Hodie, Christus natus est and the beautiful Bogoroditsye Dyevo by Rachmoninov.

Tickets will be available at the door and are just $10 per person.

Members of the Estes Park Woman’s Club joined representatives from the Estes Valley Library Friends & Foundation to celebrate plans for this Tuesday’s visit by acclaimed children’s author Gennifer Choldenko. The Woman’s Club has generously provided the funding for the Library Youth Services Department to bring Choldenko to Estes Park, where she will meet and talk to local students.

Choldenko is a Newbery-Award winning author with such popular titles as “Al Capone Does My Shirts” and “Chasing Secrets.”

The Estes Park Woman’s Club has a history that is intertwined with the library’s history. The Woman’s Club opened the first library in Estes Park in 1916. They ran the Bond Park library when it opened in 1922, and they operated the library until the 1960s. In recent years, they have been regular supporters of library youth programs and literacy projects.

Choldenko will speak to students in 4th through 8th grades. “We are thrilled anytime we can bring a major children’s author to town,” says Melanie Kozlowski, the Library’s Youth Services Supervisor.

“And for good reason. We see firsthand the enthusiasm and excitement it builds in young readers. Some discover the enjoyment of reading for the first time in their lives. Some start writing stories themselves. An author visit leaves a positive and lasting impact on young people.”

Can You Afford To Retire Early?

Some people dream of retiring early.

Are you one of them? If so, you’ll need to plan ahead – because a successful early retirement can’t be achieved through last-minute moves.

So, if you’re determined to retire early, consider taking the following steps: • Pick a date. Early retirement means different things to different people. But it’s important to pick an exact age, whether it is 60, 62, 64, or whatever, so you can build an appropriate retirement income strategy.

• Think about your retirement lifestyle.

You may know that you want to retire early – but have you thought about what you want to do with your newfound time? Will you simply stay close to home and pursue your hobbies? Do you dream of spending two months each winter on a tropical island? Or are you thinking of opening your own small business or doing some consulting? Different retirement lifestyles can have vastly different price tags. Once you’ve envisioned your future, you can develop a saving and investment plan to help you get there.

• Boost contributions to your retirement plans. If you want to retire early, you may well need to accelerate your contributions to your retirement accounts, such as your IRA and your 401(k) or other employer-sponsored plan. You may need to cut back in other areas of your life to maximize the amounts you put into your retirement plans, but this sacrifice may be worth it to you.

• Invest for growth. Your investment strategy essentially should be based on three key factors: your goals, risk tolerance and time horizon. When you change any one of these variables, it will

affect the others. So, if you shorten your time horizon by retiring early, you may well need to reconsider your risk tolerance. Specifically, you may need to accept a somewhat higher level of investment risk so you can invest for greater growth potential.

• Keep a lid on your debt load. It’s easier said than done, but try to manage your debt load as tightly as possible. The lower your monthly debt payments, the more you can contribute to your retirement plans.

Life is unpredictable. Even if you take all the steps described above, you may still fall short of your goal of retiring early. While this may be somewhat disappointing, you might find that adding just a few more years of work can be beneficial to building resources for your chosen retirement lifestyle. For one thing, you can continue contributing to your IRA and your 401(k) or similar employer-sponsored plan.

Plus, if you’re still working, you may be able to afford delaying your Social Security payments until you’re closer to your “normal” retirement age, which, as defined by the Social Security Administration, likely will be 66 or 67. The longer you put off taking these benefits, the bigger your monthly checks, although they will max out once you reach 70.

And even if you are not able to retire early, some of the moves you took to reach that goal – such as contributing as much as you could afford to your IRA and 401(k), controlling your debts, and so on – may pay off for you during your retirement – whenever it begins.

We offer thanks to many generous library lovers, whose vision and enthusiasm is trans-forming the second floor into a newly-functional space, ready to serve us into the future. We also thank the many Library volunteers who give thousands of hours of their time each year.

And we thank the book-lovers and giftseekers shopping today and tomorrow from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Holiday Book Sale. And thanks to all who donated books and materials for the sale.

Every dollar raised helps maintain and build a better library.

Estes Park United Methodist Church To Offer Caring Christmas Service The Christmas season abounds with joy. Brightly wrapped packages, Christmas trees, holiday parties, holly and the scent of pine, those unending, upbeat carols in shops and in the mall, visits from friends and family, baking and cooking, food everywhere!

Each year some people -- the grieving, the lonely, the hopeless -- dread the holiday season. They have no heart for the cheer and the bustle, the anticipation and the excitement. People who know that this Christmas will be a hard one, either because they have had a death in the family, a lost or broken relationship, or because of painful memories of Christmases past, need a place where someone understands the desire for this season to just go away.

This year at Estes Park United Methodist Church, we will gather for a special worship service where we will offer up the pain, the loneliness, the sad, dark memories, and the anxiety to the One whose birth the world eagerly awaits, Jesus Christ. A chance to sing and to pray in a loving, safe environment might be the salve your soul seeks.

We pray that you will find hope and peace at this service and comfort in knowing that you are not alone.

Quota Club Seeking Donations For An AED In Every EPPD Police Car It happens often. A call for medical aid comes in to our dispatch center and someone is suffering cardiac arrest, is not breathing or has collapsed and police are very often first on the scene.

Estes Park Police officers are in need of a tool to help them save lives in those crucial first minutes when the heart stops beating the way it should.

EPPD recently asked Quota Club of Estes Park to help them equip all of the police cars with these life-saving AEDs. Quota members are eager to help this fundraising endeavor and this letter will be going out to business owners this week.

Dear Estes Park Business Owner; We are writing to you on behalf of the Estes Park Quota Club Foundation. As you may know, in past years the Quota Club has raised over hundreds of thousands of dollars to provide ambulances for our community. This year we are focusing on the business community. We are asking you to assist us in raising funds so that we can put AEDs (Automated External Defibrillators) in every police vehicle. Currently our officers share two AEDs, that they essentially check out of the office when they go out on a call. What a wonderful thing it would be if every car were equipped with this lifesaving tool.

Having an AED at hand can indeed save lives. An AED is a portable, easy to use device that measures the heartbeat via sticky pads attached to the chest. The AED will deliver a shock via these pads to restart the heart of a person suffering a cardiac arrest. When cardiac arrest occurs, defibrillation is the only means of restarting the heart and preventing death.

When asked the reason why the Estes Park Police Department needs these AED units for their patrol cars, Captain Rick Life stated, “Quite often, members of our

police department are first on scene at an emergency call since our officers are always out patrolling the town. Having the ability to start defibrillation before the ambulance even gets there greatly improves the chances of saving lives.” Captain Life added, “All of our officers are trained First Responders. I have personally seen a person whom I thought had no chance of making it, saved by an AED. This person was unresponsive at the initial call and through the help of the AED, was talking to the ambulance crew on their way into the ambulance. It was amazing and a very happy ending to that situation.”

Our goal is to raise $25,000 by the first of the year. We know the importance of a quick and early response when someone is having a sudden cardiac arrest emergency. For every minute without treatment, a victim’s rate of survival decreases by 7% to 10%!

Deborah Meador Deborah Lee Meador, 46, of Highlands Ranch, CO died November 20, 2017 in her home surrounded by her family.

Debbi was born September 13, 1971 in Syracuse, NY to Robert and Gyl Condojani. After high school Debbi attended Florida State University and graduated with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Public Relations with a minor in Marketing.

She married Jeffrey Meador in May 15, 2004 in Highlands Ranch and had three daughters. Debbi and Jeff enjoyed a second home in Estes Park, CO and enjoyed being with their daughters in Rocky Mountain National Park. Immediately after college she worked for a variety of Public Relations firms and Corporate Marketing departments where her strengths in organization, event planning and crisis communications were showcased.

In October 1997 Debbi founded On The Ball Babysitting Service, rocketing this type of service to a new level in Colorado before selling the business in July 2001. In December 1999 she founded KidsTown Drop-In Child

Care Center in Parker, CO and then KidsTown Franchising, Inc. shortly afterwards. Debbi challenged then spearheaded the states rules on drop-in child care, by bringing change through the State Legislation to allow dropin child care to be allowed in Colorado to this day.

Deborah is survived by her loving husband Jeff Meador, three beautiful daughters Vivian (8), Sabrina (6) and Scarlett (4) all of Highlands Ranch, CO, sister Shanna Ashe and niece Casandra Ashe of California.

A private celebration of life took place in Estes Park on November 24, 2017 with interment following at Estes Valley Memorial Gardens.

Carolyn Holmquist Estes Park resident Carolyn Holmquist died in Phoenix, AZ on November 14, 2017, after a brief illness. She was 80 years old.

Carolyn Carter was born Christmas Day, 1936 in Lincoln, NE. Her parents were Earl and Florence (Becker) Carter. Carolyn graduated from the University of Nebraska Teacher’s College where she was a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma Sorority. On June 14, 1958 she married August “Jack” Holmquist in Lincoln, NE. Carolyn was a board member of Central Community College in Columbus, NE and enjoyed reading, quilting and keeping up with the grandkids’ activities.

In Estes Park, she was a member of Quota Club, and she and Jack owned Dad’s Laundry for 25 years.

Carolyn was preceded in death by her

parents, stepmother Mary Jerry Carter of Lincoln, sister Louise Carter Ganz of Lincoln and daughter Mollie Holmquist of Estes Park.

She is survived by Jack of Estes Park, daughters Heidi (Tim) Kuster of Estes Park, CO, Suzi (Max) Sperry of Phoenix, AZ and Carrie (Mike) West of Pueblo, CO; grandchildren Sam (Demi) Kuster, Kelsi and Mollie Sperry and Jordan, Shelby and Gracie West. She is also survived by her sister Jayne Gotschall of Atkinson, NE. Private services will be held at Estes Valley Memorial Gardens.
