Glen Haven Celebrates New Town Hall! Veterans Day Holiday Closure Larimer County Offices, Courts, and District Attorney will be closed on November 12, 2018 in observance of the Veterans Day holiday. The landfill will be open. Critical services at Larimer County are not disrupted by closures.

Hall! A huge, heartfelt thank you goes out to everyone who has supported this project to help rebuild the community of Glen Haven. After the historic 2013 flood, the Glen Haven community needed support to help raise the roof and rebuild their Town Hall. In September of that year, the tiny town of Glen Haven was devastated by floodwaters that swept the area. The community of Glen Haven united and with the help of volunteer groups from all over the nation, they were able to clean up after their huge loss. Of the 12 buildings and businesses in downtown Glen Haven, all that remained were the General Store, The Inn of Glen Haven, the fire house, and the post office. The Town Hall was completely destroyed, having been pushed off its foundation and into the General Store. New restrictions on building prohibited

The Estes Park Elementary Rocky Mountain Echoes Choir will hold a special performance at 5:15 p.m., then Mayor Todd Jirsa will perform the official lighting of the tree promptly at 5:30 p.m. The community is invited to come enjoy live music, cookies, hot chocolate, costumed characters, crafts, and a visit with Santa. Blue Santa is sponsored by the Estes Park Police Department Auxiliary. It is anticipated that Blue Santa will assist nearly 100 people this year, and it’s not too late to nominate someone in need of assistance. The charge(s) are merely an accusation and the defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty. On October 27 at 7:59 p.m. police were called to a disturbance at 333 E. Wonderview. Upon arrival they charged a 25 year old male from Windsor, CO with criminal mischief, issued him a municipal citation and he was later released. On October 27 at 8:26 p.m. police arrested a 49 year old male at 333. E Wonderview who was found to be wanted on a warrant. The warrant was from the Weld Co. Sheriff ’s Office for failure to appear on traffic charges. He was transported to Larimer County Jail. On October 31 at 12:57 a.m. police
stopped a 58 year old male driver from Estes Park in the 400 block of Chapin Lane for expired registration on his licence plates. Upon further investigation, the driver showed signs of impairment and was unable to perform roadside maneuvers. He was taken into custody and charged with DUI and later released on a summons to a responsible person. On November 1 at 3:06 p.m. at 170 MacGregor Ave. (EPPD) a 38 year old female from Estes Park who was wanted on a warrant turned herself in to police. She was wanted by Fort Collins PD on a warrant for failure to appear, DUI, reckless driving and failure to report an accident. She was later released on a cash bond.

Veterans Day Service At United Methodist Church This Saturday The public is cordially invited to attend the 2018 Veterans Day Service at the United Methodist Church this Saturday, November 10, eleven o’clock in the morning. (Note: the ceremony is normally held at Estes Valley Memorial Gardens but due to the cold weather forecast, the ceremony has been moved to the church.) One hundred years ago on November 11, 1918, fighting in World War I came to an end. Following the signing of an armistice between the Allies and Germany called for a ceasefire effective at 11 o’clock in the morning thus being the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month. Originally known as Armistice Day, this day of commemoration was first celebrated on November 11, 1919 – the first anniversary of the end of World War I, which has been known through time as the “war to end all wars.” In 1954, President Eisenhower changed the name of this day of remembrance to Veterans Day to honor those who gave their time and life for our great country. This is the 31st annual observance presented by the EVMG Board of Directors remembering military men and women who have died in every American war – from the American Revolution, World War II to the more recent wars in Afghanistan and Iraq and current conflicts where our military strives to keep peace. On this day we also honor the living war veterans, as well as our country’s men and women who are currently serving in the United States Armed Forces at home and in foreign lands. Thru the years there have been times when the weather is in conflict with the observance…and we think of the long winter months the American troops fought under these conditions – especially during WWII – holding the love and freedoms for our country steadfast. Our attendance at this day’s Observances expresses our deepest gratitude. Participating in our program this year

Over two hundred United States flags and one British flag mark their graves in this hallowed, dedicated and tranquil place. You are encouraged to walk through the cemetery located at 1672 Fish Hatchery Road and spend time in reverent thought and thankful prayer for those who gave the ultimate for our country and for our freedom. On Sunday, November 11th, there are several activities to commemorate this important day in our nation’s history. From 7:30-10:00 a.m. the annual American Legion Veteran’s Day Breakfast will be hosted by the Sons of the American Legion Squadron 119 and is free for veterans. The American Legion sponsored Cub Scout troop will be serving the veterans; the Auxiliary will hold their annual raffle for a Thanksgiving basket and the Legion, raffling gift certificates donated by local merchants. The American Legion is also sponsoring a service at 2:00 p.m. at the Veteran’s Monument located at the Visitor’s Center which was dedicated a year ago. We look forward to seeing you all at any or all of the special events. Remember the observance at the United Methodist Church located at 1509 Fish Hatchery Road will be on Saturday, November 10th at 11:00 a.m. when we gather to honor all veterans. Estes Park Salutes Veterans Each year we pause to honor our veterans for the service that they have given to our nation. Here in Estes Park, all are invited to join American Legion Post 119 and the Estes Park Veterans Monument Committee on Veterans Day, Sunday November 11, 2018 in a commemoration and expression of gratitude to our nation’s Veterans. Start the day with a hearty breakfast at Post 119, from 7-10:30 a.m. on the corner of Highways 36 and 7 in Estes Park. With the exception of the World War II years, Post 119 has served a Veterans Day Breakfast every year since 1928. That breakfast is free for all Veterans and only $5 for all others thanks to the generous donations from local businesses. Breakfast will be cooked by Post 119’s Sons of the American Legion, and served by Cub Scout Pack 8 of Estes Park with assistance from the Post 119 Auxiliary. The menu includes scrambled eggs, bacon and sausage, pancakes, toast and the SOS (hamburger gravy on toast) of military tradition. At 2 p.m. on Sunday afternoon, a ceremony is planned at the Estes Park Veterans Monument just west of the Estes Park Visitor Center. Veterans from all branches of the Armed Forces, through times of war and times of peace, are forever honored through this site. This year, the ceremony will include a
special tribute to John McCain, the American statesman, Vietnam Veteran, and former POW who died this past August. Special recognition will be given to the 100th anniversary of the Armistice, i.e. the ending, of World War I. The program will be led by Daniel R. Scace (Retired Brig. Gen. United States Air Force/Connecticut Air National Guard), and will include a reading by Capt. Dick Life (US Navy retired) of In Flanders Fields, with a reflection on the symbolic role of poppies to commemorate our fallen soldiers. The American Legion is a nonpartisan nonprofit organization that was chartered and incorporated by Congress in 1919 as a patriotic Veterans organization devoted to mutual helpfulness. Estes Park’s Post 119 was chartered in 1920 as the local branch of that national organization. Veterans and their family members are encouraged to join and support this worthy organization. The Estes Park Veterans Monument Committee is a group of volunteers who raised funds and directed the construction of the monument for its unveiling on November 11, 2017. We hope that all of you will join us for the breakfast and the ceremony on Sunday November 11, 2018.

It’s been a difficult time. Yet through it all my family has spent many meaningful moments together, which is how my dad would have wanted it (so that he wouldn’t have had to say, “What is all this tripe? ”) He is now hitting a hole-in-one with every swing, listening endlessly to the Vocal Majority ring barbershop harmonies (or Eddie Fisher crooning his greatest hits, and mixing it up with a Sousa march or two), singing falsetto with endless breath support, playing his ukulele like Cliff Edwards, drinking gin on ice, and admiring his flawless green, weed-free lawn. He is baking the perfect loaf of bread, then toasting a slice and slathering it with a thick pat of golden butter. After enjoying three of those pieces of toast, he is wiping his mouth with his napkin, then lifting his arm to wipe his armpit. There is a reason he was called “funny Dinny Donohoe. ” Well did, Dad. On Thursday, November 1, 2018, Denis Francis Donohoe passed away at home surrounded by his family. Denis was born in Pocahontas, Iowa on April 3, 1929 to Edward and Alice (McGuire) Donohoe. He graduated from Pocahontas High School in 1947, served in the Army in 1951-53, and earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of
Iowa in 1956. He married JoAnn Ward on September 1, 1956 in Des Moines, IA. The couple resided in Des Moines, where he began a career in direct mail, first at Meredith Corporation, then with Fingerhut in Minneapolis, MN; Mail Advertising Corporation in Chicago, IL, and retired from MetroMail Corporation in Lincoln in 1988. Denis was an avid golfer and made two holes-in-one in his lifetime. He loved singing and listening to music, especially barbershop music, and he and Jo served as volunteers at the Lied Center for Performing Arts for many years. Denis is survived by Jo, his wife of 62 years, children Ned Donohoe (Tammy), Patrick Donohoe (Odalys), Sarah Donohoe, Alice Smolarski (Bob), Janet Donohoe (Philip Wainwright) ; grandchildren Janet, Jeffrey, Tim, Greg, Ellen, William and Thomas; great-granddaughter Atrayana and great-great-granddaughter Liliana. 366 brand new books went missing from the Scholastic Book Fair at Estes Park Elementary School in late October. Where did they go? They went home with 204 local students who needed them most, to keep as their own! The Plant a Book, Grow a Child program just completed its third year, and has so far been able to give away a combined total of 1,173 books, to 511 local EPES students. Plant a Book, Grow a Child partners with the annual Scholastic Book Fair as well as with EPES as an opportunity to
empower each EPES teacher to put books into the hands of the elementary school students in their classes who need them most. As an added benefit, Scholastic then donates 50% of the proceeds from these sales back to the school for additional books for the school. The program operates with no overhead—100% of funds donated to this program go toward purchasing books. This year, the program was funded through generous grants from many local organizations such as Bank of Estes Park, Estes Valley Sunrise Ro-

Estes Park Archives Program This Saturday

The Estes Park Archives is pleased to welcome Chris Mason of Omaha to Estes Park this Saturday. Mr. Mason is the compiler of the Sanborn X-Series checklist, an exhaustive study of over 1500 black and white postcards produced by Harold Sanborn between 1933 and 1961 and given the designation "X", meaning the image came from a negative provided by a customer or a photographer sought out by Sanborn for the quality of their work. Because many of these were "vanity" subjects from smaller lodges or cottage camps, they were produced in small numbers and never re-ordered, making them virtually impossible
to locate today. The X-series is especially strong in Estes Park area views, including more than 30 distinct views of the Glen Haven area which will likely never be found until the general public learns common diagnostic clues that help with identification. Rocky Mountain National Park Exotic Plant Management Plan Environmental Assessment Available For Public Review The National Park Service (NPS) has released for public review and comment an Environmental Assessment (EA) for the Exotic Plant Management Plan for Rocky Mountain National Park. Invasive exotic plants are capable of spreading rapidly, outcompeting native plants, and drastically altering ecosystem conditions and processes. The number of invasive exotic plant species in the park is growing, as are their distribution and acreage. This is occurring despite efforts to control these occurrences. The park is currently managing exotic invasive plant infestations in accordance with the 2003 Invasive Exotic Plant Management Plan and Environmental Assessment (2003 plan). While the 2003 plan provides a mechanism for addressing some invasive exotic plant infestations, it does not allow managers the flexibility to deal with new species infestations, prevents the eradication of some treated species, and does not contain a structured framework to incorporate new science and information into the decision-making and management process. The park is proposing to adopt a framework to manage exotic plant species. The EA evaluates two alternatives: a no action alternative and a preferred alternative. Under Alternative A (the no action alternative), the park would continue to manage exotic plants under the 2003 plan. Under Alternative B (the preferred alternative), the park would develop a decision-making framework that would incorporate the best available science, expert knowledge, site assessments, and monitoring to determine the extent of exotic species infestations, determine if management is necessary, prioritize management, and determine the most effective management methods. Park staff would have the flexibility to use a full range of integrated pest management tools, including mechanical control, responsible chemical control, cultural practices, biological control, early de-
tection, and monitoring the effectiveness of management strategies that are consistent with NPS policy and Director’s Order #77-7: Integrated Pest Management. Public Comment Park staff encourage public participation throughout the planning process. A public meeting will take place on Thursday, November 15 from 6 to 7:30 p. m. at the Estes Valley Library in the Hondius Room, 335 E Elkhorn Ave, Estes Park, CO 80517. There will be a short presentation at 6:15 p. m., and park staff will be available to answer questions. The public is invited at any point during the scheduled time to review materials and provide written comments. The EA will be on public review, with comments accepted through December 6. The document is available electronically for review and comment online by visiting http://parkplanning.nps.gov/romo, the website for the NPS’s Planning Environment and Public Comment (PEPC) system. It is again time to rally together for a new ambulance for Estes Park Health, formerly Estes Park Medical Center, and the Emergency Medical Services Team (EMS). e entire community and all of our visitors count on an ambulance being available when there is a need. Did you know? • Five ambulances are in service at all times, answering calls that cover a 1000 square miles. e EMS answer calls from Allenspark, Big Elk Meadows, Estes Park, Glen Haven, Pinewood Springs, and Le Hand Fire District. • e budget for the ambulance maintenance alone is $52,000.00 annually. Two of the five, ambulances have over 200,000 miles on the odometer. • 31% of the ambulance calls are for transfer of patients to hospitals out of the Estes Park area. • e cost of a new fully equipped ambulance will be approximately $230,000.00. Quota Club Donates Funds To Purchase AED For Senior Center
Quota Club of Estes Park Service to Seniors committee presented a check in the amount of $1,000 to the Estes Park Senior Citizens Center last week. The Senior Citizens Center is located at 1820 S. St. Vrain (Masonic Lodge). This Senior Center has existed in Estes Park for over 42 years and as of mid-year in 2018, has over 375 members. The Senior Cen-
ter primary purpose is to maintain and improve the lives of all members of our community, with an special emphasis on those individuals in their later years of life. The Senior Cicitzens Center offers TriFit, Tai Chi, Mahjong, games, movies and other activities and this AED is a welcome addition to the center.

A Heartfelt “Thank You” For A Wonderful Night At Vintage
Each year on the last Sunday in October, Andy Morgan, owner of the Dunraven Inn, closes his restaurant for business so that he can host the Vintage to raise funds for Crossroads Ministry of Estes Park. Andy and his entire staff donate their time to serve over 200 people who attend this event. Out of a generous heart he provides all the food, drink, and space for this to happen. Judy Sandstrom coordinated the efforts of collecting items for the auction, selling tickets, and organizing a team of volunteers. This year the Vintage raised $54,590 to support the vital services that Crossroads provides our community. Gayle Holtzman was the raffle winner of the $6,000 travel voucher through Columbine Travel Agency. We are grateful for everyone that gave at Vintage and for all the community partners that shared items with us to be sold at the auction.

Perfect Harmony At Crossroads Concert
This year’s Benefit Concert for Crossroads Ministry was held on Saturday, October 27th, and brought in $5,039 to be redistributed to meet needs among our neighbors in the Estes Valley. Brian Schaffer, executive director of Crossroads Ministry of Estes Park said, “We are so grateful for the generous hospitality that Pastor Michael Moore has extended to Crossroads in making his church building available for this concert and for his collaborative partnership with Robert Gunn who pitched the idea of getting his musical friends together to raise funds for those in need.” Crossroads is already putting this money to work in our community by assisting families with needed food and nutritious meals. Schaffer shared a few words before the intermission and led the crowd of almost 300 in a song of “I’d Like To Teach The World To Sing.” Here’s what he shared, “Every note on a sheet of music is important. In fact, the notes put in the right order produce a beautiful sound. Playing in perfect harmony takes effort. The timing of when to come in with each note is significant. Perfect harmony describes this event for Crossroads. There are many noteworthy people who come together to play a meaningful part in raising funds for people in our community who are experiencing a difficult season in life. For some of our neighbors, these funds will go to pay rent when they’re unable to do so themselves and for others it’s a medical bill that needs to be taken care of. One of the most incredible things about Crossroads is that our contributing partners make it possible for us to step into a person’s life to pay the note or more importantly to play the note that brings harmony back into their life. Abby Lemirande 12th Grade Congratulations to Abby Lemirande, the Estes Park News Student of the Week for November 9, 2018. School activities Abby enjoys are year round swim training and being a member of the National Honor Society. She maintains a 4.0 GPA and has earned three academic letters. She has earned three varsity letters for swimming and placed in the top 16 at state in all of her events. Outside of school she loves helping with the middle school swim team, helping younger kids learn how to swim, hanging out with friends and “hammocking.” Abby’s favorite quote is “Whoever said the small things don’t matter has never seen a match start a wildfire” by
Beau Taplin. She likes this quote because it shows that the little, everyday things have a bigger impact than the major events in life. After high school Abby plans to go to college to study kinesiology and exercise science. She is also hoping to swim at the collegiate level.

One of the things that gets a ‘thumbs up’ from many at this time of year is the way that Estes Park conducts the Halloween ‘treat-giving’ downtown. This is accompanied by a wide display and variety of masks and costumes. That seems enjoyed by all. ‘Masks’ at such a time can be fun. However, there are other times they are less appropriate. The story is told of a student who walked into a mask factory. The man behind the counter smiled and began his sales pitch. “Welcome to Masks-R-Us! Your source for masks both new and used! Can I sell you a mask today, son? Here’s a nice model. We call it the ‘GOOD STUDENT WHO KNOWS ALL THE ANSWERS’ mask.â€? “No, I don’t think so,â€? said the young man. The man, held up another. “This one’s popular with people your age! It’s the ‘I’M TOTALLY COOL AND QUITE POPULAR’ mask. What do you think?â€? The boy, again, shook his head. The man smiled. “Okay, let me guess‌you want something a little less showy. I’ve got only one copy of this one, but you can have it.â€? He held it up. “It’s the ‘ALL-AROUND NICE GUY’ mask!â€? The student said, “No thanks, sir, actually, I was hoping to turn mine in,â€? as he pointed to his face. “I’ve decided not to wear a mask anymore.â€? “Not wear a mask?â€? the man gasped. “But everyone wears masks! If they didn’t, I’d be out of business! I certainly can’t take your mask!â€? The student turned to leave. The man sighed. “Let’s have a look at it.â€? The boy slipped off his mask and handed it across the counter. It felt so good to take it off. “Hmmm. I don’t get many of these ‘PERFECTLY HAPPY LITTLE CHRISTIAN WHO NEVER DOES ANYTHING WRONG’ masks. Most people hang onto them forever. Sure you wanna part with it? I mean, if you don’t wear a mask, people won’t be impressed. They might notice your faults. And negative emotions will show.â€? The student nodded. That’s what he wanted. “I’ll finally be able to be real...be meâ€? The man sighed. “What do you want for it?â€? “Nothing. I’m just glad to be done with it,â€? he said, then opened the door and stepped outside, smiling as the door closed behind him. In the store, the man grinned as he displayed the student’s mask in a prominent place. “This will sell right away,â€? he said to himself. And it did. When I first heard this fable, I remembered a man in southern California who was a new Christian. One Sunday, as the service drew to a close, he got up and walked out of the building and leaned against a car in the parking lot. As soon as I could, I joined him and asked, “What’s wrong, Curt?â€? He said, “Bob, I don’t belong in that building with all those people. They’re all so good, so devoted to God‌so holy. And I’m not always like that.â€? I said, “Curt, could you identify with a man who said, “I know what to do‌and I don’t always do it. I know what I shouldn’t do‌ and sometimes I still do it?â€? He said, sadly, “That’s me!â€? I said, “Curt, and that’s Paul, and that’s me, and that’s all those in that building.â€? Curt did fine from that time on. However, it reminded me that so often we ‘wear masks’ that refuse to let others see our struggles and failures, so they can know that we share with them in struggling and failing‌and needing God’s grace always. So, so what does your mask say? ‘THE PERFECT WIFE AND MOTHER?’ ‘AN ALWAYS IN CONTROL AND CALM MAN?’ or perhaps, ‘LIFE IS GOOD - ALL IS WELL!’ ‘Masks’ are hard to keep in place, aren’t they? Even more tragic: a ‘mask’ makes it impossible for us to get the help we need to be more real and genuine and healthy. One Sunday I shook the hand of a young man whose wedding I had conducted a few months earlier. I asked, “How are you, Mike?â€? He smiled and said, “Fine, Bob.â€? Oh, woe is me. I was so looking forward to last Saturday night’s football game between L. S.U. and Alabama. How foolish was I? But there is always next year, right? We did not win, L.S. U. got well thrashed. All my family from brothers to husband, to our children and even our son-in-law are graduates from L. S.U. Our fondest memories of college are times in “Death Valley� cheering on our Tigers. (Our football stadium is called “Death Valley� as we are so noisy that the opponents cannot hear the calls). We did put up a determined fight but alas, those big bad Alabama guys stomped us. And then I go to church and our new priest gives a sermon on praying for your enemies. Come on Father, can I just not wish them harm? Do I have to wish them luck? Y’all know I am kidding, I hope. They are a good team and I do hope they remain champions at least until we play them again next year. Then all good wishes are off! All was not gloom and doom. I had a wonderful visit with my daughter, Marie. I had her all to myself for a change. We had a good time yelling at the TV and hoping every minute that L.S.U. would rally. I asked her for supper before the game and fixed something I knew we both really liked and was apropos for a football session. We had buffalo chicken wings with all the trimmings; celery, carrot sticks and homemade blue cheese dressing. At least that part of the night was a success. I researched on how to bake the wings while still having them remain crisp. The secret is baking powder. Not my idea but thank goodness for Google. I also cooked the sauce down so that it thickened somewhat. It really stuck to the wings by doing that.
Buffalo Chicken Wings at the Cenac’s Serves 6-8 as an appetizer Pre-heat oven 250 degrees: later 400 degrees 3 lbs. whole chicken wings. Remove tips and cut wings in half. (I had about 15 wings, making 30 pieces so am guessing three pounds) 1 heaping Tbs. baking powder (not soda) 2 tsp. salt 1-2 tsp. black pepper 2/3 cup Frank’s hot sauce
2-3 tsp. sugar 5 Tbs. butter Juice of one lemon, plus a little for the blue cheese dressing 2 Tbs. honey (After sauce reduces to a light syrup, you may want to taste and add more Frank’s or sugar) Take the wings out of refrigerator, pat dry and then allow to air dry, uncovered about 30 minutes or you can air dry in refrigerator for about three hours, uncovered. Place racks, one in lower middle half of oven and the other in middle of upper half of oven. You will bake for 30 minutes at 250 degrees in lower half of oven then move to upper rack and adjust oven to 400 degrees and bake for 40-45 minutes. Watch carefully at this temperature and remove when well browned. Or you can bake in middle of oven at 400 till done. I did the former. Cover large baking pan with foil and put an oven tolerant rack inside of pan. Spray thoroughly with cooking spray. Mix the baking powder, salt and pepper together and sprinkle on individual wings and place the wings on a prepared baking pan. It is OK if they touch one another. Put in lower half of pre-heated oven and follow above directions.
Sauce Mix rest of ingredients and cook down to reduce until syrupy. I did this on power level 2 in microwave, watching closely. When wings are cooked, remove from oven and place in a large bowl. Pour warm sauce over and toss to coat all. Blue cheese dressing is so simple: 1â „2 cup each sour cream and mayonnaise. 1â „2 cup blue cheese crumbles, little lemon juice and salt to taste and if necessary, thin with a little milk. May use bottled ranch dressing as another dip. Do not forget the crisp celery and carrot sticks as accoutrements. A last note on our football experience, Sunshine was very disturbed with all our fussing and yelling. Floods, Fires And Climate Change-How It Will Affect The Estes Valley & RMNP
Estes Park and Rocky Mountain National Park have a symbiotic relationship. Our wonderful community has flourished because of the beauty and opportunity to enjoy this magnificent Park. That relationship has been threatened over the years – 1976 and 2013 floods, bark beetle infestation of our trees, and the fires of 2012 are just a few of the many examples of natural disasters which have threatened our community over the years. As a mountain destination, the city economy and visitation to the national park are affected when these disasters occur. The town of Estes Park relies on sales tax revenue to help pay for town services and improvements and over 50% of sales tax revenue comes from visitors. The frequency of these disasters will increase with climate change. They threaten visitation, our economic viability, and the fragile ecosystem of our National Park.
Climate scientists throughout the world have called upon every person, home, city and state to reevaluate how to reduce carbon monoxide in our atmosphere. We, in Estes Park, must look at how we can impact the effects of climate change to ensure that we can continue to have a vibrant community for both our citizens and our visitors. Please join the League of Women Voters of Estes Park as we discuss the impact of climate change with Jeff Lukas, Senior Associate Scientist with the Western Water Assessment at the University of Colorado Boulder. Jeff has worked over the last 15 years to assess climate vulnerabilities such as drought and extreme precipitation. He was the lead author of the 2014 “Climate Change in Colorado” report for the Colorado Water Conservation Board. Jeff will connect the dots and how we can manage these vulnerabilities and foster more climate-resilient communities and ecosystems. The meeting will take place at the Presbyterian Community Church of the Rockies on November 14th from 10 a.m. until noon.
Picture Your Pet With Santa Next Weekend
The annual Estes Park Pet Association “Picture Your Pet With Santa” event will take place next Saturday, November 17th. Photos will be taken at Brownfields Souvenirs and Outdoor Gear store, located at 350 East Elkhorn Ave. from 8:30 a.m.-4:00 p.m. Talented photographer Kent Dannen will once again be taking the photos for
this popular event and you may have your picture taken with our without Santa Claus, with or without pets and your choice of an indoor or outdoor setting. Cost for the photo shoot is just $20 and you will receive the photos as well as a CD of your pictures within a week, just in time for your holiday cards! The Grey House To Host Benefit For Protégé

Estes Park’s The Grey House will host the first local event to support Protégé, Ballet Renaissance’s new initiative to reward and encourage commitment to classical training in particularly talented students, regardless of financial circumstance. The special event, “Ladies’ Night Out,” will be held at The Grey House 130 E. Elkhorn Ave, Estes Park, CO 80517, Tuesday Nov. 13, from 6-8 p.m., and will feature refreshments, prizes and more. The event will also be an opportunity to meet fall Protégé Pilot participants and
their families, and to mingle with other friends and supporters of The Grey House and Ballet Renaissance. 10% of all sales at The Grey House, both during the event and at any time during the day of Tuesday November 13, will support Protégé. Additionally, an anonymous donor will match dollar for dollar the first $1,000 raised by The Grey House's contribution from the event, and any on-site donations toward Protégé the day of the event. Tax deductible charitable donations may also be mailed directly to Ballet Renaissance PO Box 3768 EP, CO 80517, and earmarked toward the match (please make a note in the memo line). To meet the match, mailed donations must be postmarked on or before Dec. 31, 2018 (which encompasses both Giving Tuesday and Colorado Gives Day). If met, the matching challenge will cover costs for the 10-week Fall Protégé Pilot, important in helping Ballet Renaissance get a sense of what it will take to launch Protégé on a larger scale. Donations received over and above the match will be
allocated toward future Protégé projects here in Estes Park. The Grey House is co-owned by sisters Dena King and Dani Stafford. There is no admission fee to attend the event. Broadway Dance & Music Celebration This Saturday, November 10 Twin Flame Productions and life partners, Laurie Wood (dancer) and David Potter (musician), are producing their 2nd Annual Live Show, Wood Potter & Friends, a Broadway Dance & Music Celebration on Saturday, November 10 at 2:00 p.m. at the Estes Valley Community Center in the Community Room downstairs. Aviation Club Meeting Nov. 14- “Band Of Brothers”
Estes Park resident and Air Force retiree Dan Scace will discuss the “Band of Brothers” tour he and his wife Tami took in September and October, at the November 14th Estes Park Aviation Club Internationale meeting. The tour was led by the National WWII Museum in New Orleans and follows the path of “Easy” Company, 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 101st Airborne from their training base in England all the way to the Eagle’s Nest on the German-Austrian border. Easy Company, aka the “Band of Brothers,” was portrayed in the 2001 American war drama miniseries “Band of Brothers” which is based on historian Stephen E. Ambrose's 1992 non-fiction book Band of Brothers. The presentation includes pictures and
memories of the tour along the path of these incredible soldiers. Dan and Tami were moved deeply by the beaches of Normandy, visits to our American cemeteries in Normandy, The Netherlands, Belgium and Luxembourg, the tour of Dachau Concentration Camp, and the way grateful European nations honor our veterans every day. Dan is a 1972 graduate of the United States Air Force Academy and a command pilot with over 4,000 hours of fighter aircraft time in the F-4 Phantom II and the A-10 “Warthog.” The public is invited to the Aviation Club meeting, Wednesday, November 14th at 6:30 p.m. in the Estes Valley Library Hondius Room for this free program.

I like to read. As a family we like to travel (especially to Disney World), play games, and watch movies. I volunteer at the school to be around my kids more and we are active in our church.” What is your best wellness tip? Dr. Aldridge: “Whole mind and body wellness affects everything. Mindfulness and keeping things in perspective is so important. Good nutrition, rest, physical activity and spiritual development all need equal attention over a lifetime and I believe habits are best started in childhood. Estes Park Health Begins Surgicalist Physician Services With the decision by Dr. Woodard to focus his practice on Wound Care only, Estes Park Health evaluated the best options to provide surgical care to the community. Estes Park Health has contracted with Rural Physicans Group (RPG) for surgicalists. A surgicalist is a highly trained, board-certified surgeon who provides surgical services in the hospital and outpatient clinic. RPG embodies a unique surgicalist model that provides vital health services to rural communities across the United States. RPG recruits exceptional surgicalist physicians who are committed to providing excellent patient care in rural communities. Each surgicalist physician understands the business of healthcare and is a champion of enhancing the overall patient experience. The surgicalist program will allow more patients to have surgery in Estes Park and remain close to home for followup care. Together, Estes Park Health and RPG have assessed Estes Park Health’s surgical needs and matched the need with two surgicalist physicians. The dedicated RPG surgicalist physician will travel to Estes Park Health to work rotating twoweek shifts and provide high-quality, 24/7 surgical care. Estes Park Health will benefit in the long term through the continuity and quality of care delivered by RPG physicians, as well as, the financial sustainability of the business model. Meet the RPG Surgicalists David Reitter, M.D. received his Doctor of Medicine from the University of South Dakota School of Medicine in 1995 and is American Board of Surgery Certified. Dr. Reitter joined RPG because he wanted to work in a col-
laborative, supportive medical environment to provide rural communities with high quality surgical care and endoscopy. Dr. Reitter’s general surgical procedures include cholecystectomy, appendectomy, inguinal and ventral hernia repair, breast biopsy and subsequent breast care, diagnosis and surgical treatment of colon cancer, endoscopic procedures to include diagnostic upper and lower endoscopy, therapeutic treatment and more. John Lowery, M.D. received his received his Doctor of Medicine from the University of South Dakota School of Medicine in 1987 and is a Diplomat, American College of Surgeons. Dr. Lowery joined RPG to provide high quality, safe and effective surgical services using a patient-centered, evidence based medical practice. He utilizes leading technology and surgical techniques to improve patient outcomes and decrease surgical complications. Dr. Lowery will perform major and minor minimally invasive surgical procedures to include major and minor open procedures and laparoscopic procedures for trauma surgery, thyroid biopsy, thyroidectomy, hernia repair, appendectomy, breast biopsy, lumpectomy, bowel resection, colonoscopy and more. Dr. Reitter and Dr. Lowery will have clinic hours in the Physician Clinic, and will work closely with Estes Park Health physicians to provide surgical services close to home and close to the patient’s primary care physician. Duck Race 2019 Seeks Participating Organizations By: Rita DuChateau
Calling all Estes Valley nonprofit charities or organizations that would like to share the proceeds of the 2019 Rotary Duck Race Festival! Now’s the time to step up, ask your members if they will sell Duck Adoption Forms, and submit paperwork for consideration by the Rotary Duck Race Festival organizations committee. Letters have been sent to past and potential participating organizations, according to Kathy Groesbeck, chairman of the 31st Rotary Duck Race Festival. Groups that have not received letters are encouraged to submit an application for consideration. Monday, Dec. 31, 2018 is the deadline for organizations to respond. “We invite nonprofit charities and organizations to complete the application soon, so we can develop our list and print our Adoption Forms,” Groesbeck said. “The Rotary Duck Race Festival Committee is planning an exciting event to continue its legendary success over the past three decades. We look forward to selecting a wide-ranging group of local non-profit organizations to participate so they can benefit from their experience to raise funds to accomplish their mission in our community.” Once nonprofit charities and organizations have been selected as participating organizations, they can launch their Duck Adoption sales campaigns. Sales will be conducted through the Rotary Duck Race Festival website, Facebook page and the traditional paper Adoption Form. The Rotary Duck Race Festival committee encourages participating organizations to use their websites, social media and email to extend their sales reach beyond the local community. Art Center To Feature Photographer Weldon Lee With “Family Portraits” The Art Center of Estes Park is pleased to announce its upcoming exhibition “Family Portraits: My Wild Brothers and Sisters” featuring Allenspark photographer Weldon Lee. This show, sponsored by Renate Edmundson and Eileen Van Baren, opens Friday, November 16 with a reception from 5:007:00 p.m. and will run through December 23. We welcome you to join us for the reception which is free and open to the public. Weldon Lee is one of America’s top wildlife photographers. With a career spanning over half a century, his pursuit of wildlife has taken him around the globe to many of the world’s most exotic wildlife destinations. His work has been exhibited in the Denver Museum of Nature and Science and the Carnegie Museum of Natural History in Pittsburgh. Weldon’s early work focused on wildlife in the Rocky Mountains. His first book, “Watchable Birds of the Rocky Mountains” contains over 50 photographs depicting a cross-section of avian species found throughout the Rocky Mountains. Erwin and Peggy Bauer, friends and lifelong wildlife photographers, had this to say about his second book, “No region of North America offers so many opportunities for wildlife photographers as the Rocky Mountains. No one has ever described its wildlife and captured their natural beauty so thoroughly as Weldon Lee in A Guide to Photographing Rocky Mountain Wildlife.” Additional books by Weldon include Bears of North America and his latest, Rocky Mountain Wildlife. Weldon is actively involved in wildlife preservation. In 2016, he and his wife, Lori Huff, founded MISSION: New Earth, a 501(c) (3) organization. According to him, "Our mission is to help children create a new earth, where it is no longer necessary to save wildlife; a world where wildlife can live in peace and harmony as originally planned." Weldon says, “Wildlife photography transports me into the spirit world of my wild brothers and sisters, where I find myself connecting with them and listening to what they have to say. When I create a work of photographic art, I want it to portray the things I see, hear, and feel when I'm in that magical space. My art is a collaboration between myself and my wild brothers and sisters. Whoever, whatever, created them, also created me. We’re made of the same dust. We share almost identical DNA. That makes us related, and is why I often refer to them as my wild brothers and sisters. This is my philosophy. This is who I am and this is what, so I am told, is portrayed in my art. I have known and respected Kelly Grummons as an exceptional plantsman since my days as Executive Director of Denver Botanic Gardens, which is approaching 40 years now. I consider him to be dedicated to his craft of identifying and striving to improve upon plants that may be successfully grown by Colorado
gardeners. Formerly, as the chief horticulturist and co-owner of Timberline Gardens in Arvada, CO, which closed in 2015 after 17 years as a rare plant business, Kelly was at the forefront of introducing new varieties that expanded the plant palette available to landscapers and gardeners. Early in life, growing up on the family ranch in the southern Black Hills on the Wyoming/South Dakota border, he de-
veloped a passion for western horticulture and nature. Later, studies in Botany at the University of Wyoming and Landscape Horticulture at Colorado State University, he honed his keen observational skills and professional expertise to distinguish those plants exhibiting exceptional characteristics that would enable them to flourish in our western gardens. Brad Fitch To Sing Tribute To Gordon Lightfoot Concert November 25 Hear Brad Fitch at his first-ever Tribute to Gordon Lightfoot, Sunday, Nov. 25 at the Old Gallery in Allenspark. Final “Songwriters In The Round” For The Season At The Old Gallery The Old Gallery in Allenspark has become quite the destination for regional songwriters, thanks to its Songwriter in the Round events. Credit Where Credit Is Due To The Editor: I enjoyed volunteering for MacGregor Ranch Museum this summer so much I thought it might be fun to enter the Estes Park Museum Friends and Foundation Table Setting fundraiser using dishes from the ranch museum. First, I checked with Katherine Ellerman, MacGregor Ranch Program Administrator, for permission to use the dishes. Then, asked Debbie Richardson for her thoughts on the menu and expertise picking suitable dishes to compli-
ment the menu. Unfortunately, their names were left out of the article last week about the winners. I couldn't have done it without their help, especially on the day we all three set the table. We ironed and smoothed and measured and fretted about every detail, until someone finally said, “Walk away from the table.” Thank you for the awards. Thanksgiving From Clear Vision
Since Patrick's fall on September 7th, it has sometimes seemed like one continuous day. With many appointments down the mountain and nose rebreak surgery three weeks ago, we seemed to have gone backwards a bit. But as we move forward, the surgeon gave the ok for Patrick to put 20% of his weight on his left side and with the help of physical therapy, Patrick is now using only one crutch! He will most likely be out of work until spring and since the left wrist took alot of the fall, it seems to be taking a bit longer to heal. Gratitude doesn't seem to fully capture the feelings of Thanksgiving we have for
all those who have reached out to us, since the fall. "Overwhelmed" expresses it better. From friends who brought us meals, to those who have helped financially and to those who have prayed for us daily, to us these are the widows mite of scripture....true gifts from the heart. Nick Kane If you were lucky enough to have known Nick Kane, you knew how much of a fun loving, hardworking, and genuinely goodhearted man that he was. If you knew him well, you are probably also able to recall at least one hilarious joke that he has shared with you, followed by his infectious, jolly laugh. He had a special gift of lifting spirits and bringing laughter into the world with his corny jokes. Nick passed away peacefully but unexpectedly in the comfort of his home early on November 1, 2018. Nicholas Scott Kane was born in Waukegan, IL on June 19, 1964 and was raised in Estes Park, Colorado. He attended school in Estes Park until he graduated in 1982. He wrestled, ran track, played football, basketball, softball and baseball from middle school throughout high school. He attended a semester to play football at Chadron State in Chadron, Nebraska. He was a phenomenal athlete, but his true passion was riding dirt bikes and fourwheelers and being able to escape into the mountains. Nick married his high school sweetheart, Kim Rambeau, on May 19, 1990. Together they have two children, Alyssa and Bradley Kane and have been together for nearly 40 years. Brad blessed him with his only grandson on
April 24, 2017, Preston, who made Nick so very proud and brought a new joy into his life. Nick was well known around town as a handyman of sorts, as he owned his own business; Kane Construction for almost 20 years. He also helped manage Nicky’s Resort with his son Bradley. He was constantly found in a garage working on cars and motorcycles (his own and friends) and watching his beloved Los Angeles Rams. He is survived by his high school sweetheart and wife of 28 years, Kim and children Alyssa and Bradley Kane; grandson Preston Kane; parents Nick Kane and Penny Kane; sister Peggylee Kane; mother-in-law Diane Rambeau; father-in-law Michael Rambeau; sister-in-law Michele (Wayne) York; brother in law Matt (Cristie) Rambeau; nieces Nikole (Chris) Stevenson, Laeticia and Maddy Rambeau; nephews Gunnar and Luke Lordemann. A Prayer Service will be held at Our Lady of the Mountains Catholic Church on Thursday, November 8, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. A private burial will take place at Estes Valley Memorial Gardens followed by a public reception at Nicky’s Restaurant. Bright Christmas Celebrating 34th YearGearing Up For 2018 Holidays Estes Park Bright Christmas is celebrating its 34th year of coming alongside families with children who need help with Christmas. We are currently gearing up for the 2018 Program. Because of the wonderful support we get from this community, over the years we have been able to help many families give their children a brighter Christmas. Families in need have been “adopted” by other families, businesses, churches, clubs and individuals for Christmas gifts. With the funds that are donated, we purchase food, cleaning supplies and personal care items for each family. Bright Christmas values the many community partnerships that contribute to our program, including Plum Creek Shoe stores, Estes Park Center (YMCA of the Rockies), and the Estes Valley Recreation and Park District. Sign-up for the Bright Christmas program will be held at Crossroads Ministry (851 Dry Gulch Road) on Wednesday, Nov. 14 between 1:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. or on Saturdays, Nov. 10 or Nov. 17 between 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. Our representatives will be at Crossroads on these dates to help with the paperwork.
