Cases of COVID-19 are increasing at a dramatic pace throughout Larimer County, including Estes Park. From March through September of this year, Estes Park recorded 41 cases of COVID19. From October through the date I am writing this column, roughly a month and a half, we have added 151 cases.

While not a perfect metric due to the small size of our community, it is worth noting that Estes Park now has the highest number of COVID-19 cases per 100,000 residents of any community in Larimer County.

All of the above information is available on the Larimer County Department of Health and Environment's (LCDHE) website (https://www.larimer.org/health/communicable-disease/coronavirus-covid19). Cases can be viewed on the COVID-19 Dashboard, or can be downloaded into an Excel file. The Dashboard gives cases broken down by community (using zip code), provides information on deaths and outbreaks within Larimer County, and also provides information on key risk factors that LCDHE is watching closely.

As I write this column, six of the eight risk indicators tracked by LCDHE on its COVID-19 Dashboard are indicating a high risk for Larimer County. This includes new positive cases in the last 24 hours, days in the past 14 with more than 15 new cases, days in the past 14 with more than 10% positive tests, the 14-day test positive percentage, the 14day case rate per 100,000, and the number of COVID patients in the hospital.

We are seeing the largest amount of positive cases per day and highest hospital

inpatient count since the pandemic began. COVID-19 is here and it is spreading. The state has moved Larimer County to "Red" on its dial framework, with implications for most types of businesses. Learn more at https://www.larimer.org/health/communicable-disease/coronavirus-covid19/safer-at-home.

We have had positive cases across multiple facilities within the Town organization. These cases have highlighted the fact that even with precautions, there is risk any time that people gather, whether that be at work or outside of work. We are handling these cases with great care in order to protect our employees, the public, and the critical services provided by the Town. When the fallout from a positive case impacts the level of service provided to the public, we will continue to communicate this in a transparent manner - as we did with the Finance Department and Utility Billing impacts this month.

Getting together in groups, even with people you know, is part of why COVID-19 numbers are on the rise in our community. A significant percentage of recent cases has been tied to indoor gatherings between more than one household. Saying "no" to get-togethers with friends and family is never easy, but right now it's the best way to protect your health and the health of those you care about, as well as to slow the spread of the virus.

I know that this is tough advice to swallow, especially with the holidays coming up. It is never easy to modify a holiday tradition, especially in a year

that has been marked by so many compromises already.

However, it is the safest thing to do not only for yourself and your family, but also for your community. There is too much ahead of us to jeopardize the safety of our high-risk friends and family members.

Even in these tough times, our community has a lot to be thankful for. We were able to make it through the summer and early fall with low case-counts, allowing a more-normal-than-expected season for the small businesses that are critical to the economic vitality of our community. We were spared the devastating impacts of wildfire when the East Troublesome Thompson Zone Fire stopped unexpectedly in Rocky Mountain National Park roughly a mile from the Town boundary. Thousands of men and women came to help us. We live in a place of unparalleled beauty with access to outdoor recreation amenities that are coveted by many as they rediscover the outdoors due to pandemic impacts.

On the horizon of 2021, we have the promise of vaccines to help restore normalcy to our society. Meanwhile, we ask for your support during the months ahead. Please do all you can to support local businesses by shopping local, supporting local restaurants, and using local services. Remember to stay home if you feel sick, wear a mask, social-distance, wash your hands often, and socialize just within your household, for now. Together we'll get through this. From my family to yours, I wish you peaceful and happy holidays.

The charge(s) are merely an accusation and the defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.

On November 9 at 6:41 p.m. police contacted a 24 year old male driver from Estes Park who was involved in a motor vehicle accident in the 500 block of Prospect Avenue. The driver was issued a citation for driving too fast for conditions and released.

On November 19 at 9:06 p.m. police were called to the 1500 block of Raven Circle on

a report of a disturbance. On scene they arrested a 48 year old male from Estes Park and charged him with crimes against an atrisk adult, third degree assault and menacing. He was transported to the Larimer County Jail.

On November 19 at 9:17 p.m. police were called to a disturbance in the 400 block of Driftwood Ave. On scene they arrested a 34 year old male from Estes Park and charged him with harassment and domes-

tic violence and transported him to the Larimer County Jail.

On November 20 at 6:34 p.m. police stopped a 35 year old male driver from Greeley, CO in the 1500 block of Big Thompson Ave. He was arrested and charged with aggravated motor vehicle theft and criminal impersonation and then transported to the Larimer County Jail.

Bear Lake Road Reopens In Rocky Mountain National Park Most Trails West Of Bear Lake Road Remain Closed Most Trails West Of Bear Lake Road Remain Closed Bear Lake Road in Rocky Mountain National Park reopened this week after being closed since October 22, due to the East Troublesome Fire. All areas and trails east of Bear Lake Road have reopened.

Most areas west of Bear Lake Road remain closed including the Moraine Park Road at the junction of Bear Lake Road and the Moraine Park Campground.

Trails that remain closed include the Fern Lake Trail, Cub Lake Trail, the Mill Creek Basin, Hollowell Park, and Bierstadt Trail.

The trail system in the Bear Lake area has reopened. The Flattop Trail is open to the summit of Flattop Mountain but is closed past this point to the west of the Continental Divide. The Odessa/Fern Lake Trail is closed at the Odessa/Flattop Trail junction. The Bierstadt Trail is also closed at the Bear Lake/Bierstadt Trail junction.

The west side of Rocky Mountain National Park remains closed past the Grand Lake Entrance as does the North Inlet Trail and the Sun Valley Trail, due to the level of fire impacts and ongoing safety assessments.

Additional areas that will remain temporarily closed to park visitors on the east side of the park include Upper Beaver Meadows Road, the North Boundary Trail, the North Fork Trail, and Mummy Pass, Stormy Pass, Commanche Peak and Mirror Lake Trails.

Park staff will continue to assess these areas for fire activity, safety and downed trees, being mindful of high winds that occur this time of year causing more trees to fall.

On Wednesday, October 21, the East

Troublesome Fire ran approximately 18 miles before it moved into the west side of Rocky Mountain National Park, and then spotted approximately 1.5 miles from the head of Tonahutu Creek on the west side of the Continental Divide to the head of Spruce Creek on the east side of the Continental Divide. Rapid evacuations took place in Grand Lake on October 21. Evacuations for the majority of the Estes Valley were implemented on October 22, as weather predictions forecast major winds on the night of October 23 through October 24 pushing the fire further to the east. Firefighting actions and favorable weather on October 24 and 25, helped halt the major movement of the East Troublesome and Cameron Peak Fires.

Approximately 30,000 acres or nine percent of Rocky Mountain National Park has been impacted by the East Troublesome and Cameron Peak Fires.

Thanksgiving Holiday Closure Larimer County Offices, Courts, District Attorney, and Landfill will be closed on Nov. 26, 2020, for the Thanksgiving Day holiday.

Larimer County Offices will remain closed on Nov. 27, 2020, but the Courts, District Attorney and Landfill will be open.

Critical services at Larimer County are not disrupted by closures.

EVFPD firefighters generally respond to medical calls in their personal vehicles, allowing for a faster response. On other incidents, firefighters respond to a fire station to respond in department apparatus with specialized equipment.

Estes Park's Catch The Glow Festival Of Lights Starts This Weekend!

The Town of Estes Park's Events Department announces dates and times for the Catch the Glow Festival of Lights which kicks off this weekend!

The event begins the evening after Thanksgiving and runs for two weekends, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. each evening: Friday, November 27 Saturday, November 28 Sunday, November 29 Friday, December 4 Saturday, December 5 Sunday, December 6 The Catch the Glow Festival of Lights is a drivethrough light festival and will be held at the Events Complex, at 1125 Rooftop

Way. It will feature whimsical new float designs by the parade's Creative Director, local artist Michael Young.

All floats will be brilliantly lighted.

Spectators will drive "through" the parade floats in the comfort, safety, and warmth of their own vehicles. Santa himself will greet everyone as they pass. As always, this event is free of charge.

Nonprofit Relief Fund Transfers Assets To Crossroads Ministry For Rental Assistance By: Estes Park Nonprofit Resource Center (EPNRC)

In response to COVID-19 and the adaptations it requires, EPNRC established the EP Nonprofit Relief Fund in early April 2020 for disbursement within Estes Park. This fund supported any operational need that contributed to the execution of an essential service and/or basic need in our community.

COVID shut down in-person fundraising events and made it difficult for some nonprofits to offer services. Almost half of all money awarded by the Relief Fund helped offset nonprofits’ loss of income.

Other funds supported basic needs of the community (food, showers, groceries, gas cards); technology and equipment that enhanced services (a new phone line at Crossroads, internet connection and upgrades for students, remote access for crisis supporters); support of innovative programming (the Estes Valley Land Trust initiated a Conservation Corps that awarded money to community members in exchange for conservation work); and direct support to Latinx families in need.

EPNRC would like to say “Thank you” again to the generous individuals who allowed us to say YES to the needs of our local community. We would also like to acknowledge the Village Thrift Shop for their donation to support nonprofit services. Every individual who purchased T-shirts through the EPNRC Marketplace also helped make this happen.

As COVID continues, sustaining loss of income—or a reduction in income—has increased the need for rent and utilities assistance. Crossroads Ministry has received requests for over $35,000 in rent assistance in the month of November alone (prior to Thanksgiving). EPNRC is pleased to offer the balance of the Nonprofit Relief Fund, $13,500, to Crossroads Ministry in an effort to respond to this need.

Larimer County Moves To Safer At Home Level Red Of Colorado's Dial The Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment (CDPHE) has moved Larimer County from Safer at Home Level 2 (Yellow) to Level 4 (Red) on Colorado's Dial. The Larimer County Board of Health has voted to support this transition to Level Red. The move is a result of rapidly increasing COVID-19 case counts, positivity rates across all age groups, and significant impacts to hospital utilization within Larimer County over the past several weeks.

The Larimer County Health Department monitors case counts and positivity rates, along with hospitalization trends, to determine whether the spread of COVID-19 is rising. As of Friday, November 20, Larimer County's COVID19 14-day incidence rate is 819/100,000 and the positivity rate is 12.1%; both numbers have increased significantly since early September. Hospitalizations of COVID-19 patients, hospitalizations overall, and ICU usage continues to increase here in Larimer County.

UCHealth and Banner currently have 94 patients in their Larimer County hospitals with COVID-19 up from 51 patients reported on November 9, 2020.

These changes went into effect Tuesday, November 24, 2020 at 5 p.m.

Although some restrictions may vary depending upon the industry or location, almost every type of business will be impacted by this change. The Larimer County Health Department is commit-

ted to working with business owners to answer questions and support the safe operations allowable in Level Red. For more information visit www.larimer.org/health.

"Larimer County businesses are at the heart of our community, and we encourage Larimer County residents to continue to support them as they innovate and adapt to these difficult changes once again," said Larimer County Public Health Director Tom Gonzales. "Right now, it is critical that every Larimer County resident take the steps needed to prevent the transmission of COVID19. Every single positive COVID-19 case in Larimer County is a step backwards for the entire community. We have more testing and knowledge than we did in April but today transmission is greater, cases are higher, and our hospitals are really feeling the impact.

Mount Calvary Lutheran Church Postpones 2020 Advent Tea, Bazaar & Luncheon Because of Covid-19, our Mount Calvary Lutheran Church members will not be able to host our annual Advent Tea, Bazaar, and Luncheon on Saturday, December 5 at the Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church.

Thanksgiving has always been a day for getting together with family and friends to share a meal. It’s not about gifts and decorations, or chocolate and roses, or costumes and candy, or Jesus. There are no make-believe characters like Santa Claus or the Easter Bunny involved. It’s just family, friends and food.

This year, however, all of the holidays (except Valentine’s Day), including Thanksgiving, were kidnapped. The year 2020 had barely gotten off its feet when **WHAM! **, its knees were knocked out from under it, a mask got slapped on its face, and it was hauled off to spend the rest of its days in solitary confinement with a temperature, a cough, and a raging headache. Ransom is a vaccine which has yet to be paid. COVID the Kidnapper dictated: no family gatherings, no celebrations, no graduation parties, no wedding receptions, and sadly, not even funerals.

The notable holiday of Thanksgiving was supposed to be yesterday, but when we couldn’t get together with friends and family, the only thing left to identify the day as a holiday was the traditional fare.

We had planned a compromise with the dastardly disease. Taking a cue from Jackie, a friend in Lincoln, NE, we were going to empty the garage, set up tables, floor lamps and space heaters, and have three neighbors over to enjoy turkey dinner in what Jackie coined our dinage.

We would sit at least six feet apart, keep the garage/dinage door open, crank the space heaters, and make memories we would talk about for years to come.

Who’da thunk.

But things got worse and we all got cold feet. (So much for space heaters.) We moved to Plan B, which was this: Neighbors Elise and Lauren made their favorite family yeast rolls, mashed potatoes and cranberry sauce. Joe and I made sweet potatoes, green bean casserole, gravy, and pies. We set an appointed time when we met with masks on and we traded side dishes, delivering some to neighbor Charley as well. We each had our own turkeys, so we sat down at our respective tables in our respective homes with our respective turkeys and communal sides, logged into Zoom, and enjoyed our meal “together.”

Notice I didn’t mention any salad on the menu. That’s because, of all the dishes served on Thanksgiving, the one that has the most variations on the theme is salad. Well, there’s stuffing, also known as dressing. What we call this sagey, thymey, rosemary-y side dish is up for debate. I don’t eat it no matter

what it’s called, so it is not on my radar screen. But salad… now that’s a Jell-O of a different flavor.

My friend Linda told me she made the one with the pretzel/butter/sugar crust, a layer of whipped cream, cream cheese and sugar mixed together, topped with strawberries in strawberry Jell-O. My family calls it Pretzel Jell-O Salad. If that’s not in your repertoire, there’s the Mountain Dew Salad, which has lemon pie filling, whipped topping, marshmallows and Mountain Dew in it. But it also has pineapple juice and a banana, and that’s what makes it a salad. It’s so good for you! Don’t have any Mountain Dew on hand? Go for the Raspberry Fluff Salad, which, you can guess, has whipped topping, vanilla pudding and raspberries, but can be made with many other fruits. As long as there is some sort of fruit in it, it’s qualifies as a salad. (No, marshmallows do not count as fruit.)

Most salady of all is the Snicker Salad, which meets the salad criterion because it has apples in it, in addition to whipped topping, pudding and cubed Snickers bars. Some recipes even call for a little caramel sauce drizzled on top, because what’s a salad without caramel! I cringe when I admit this, but I had this salad once and I liked it. However, I had to go to confession the next day: “Father, forgive me for I have sinned. I ate a Snickers Salad.”

If you love the idea of these salads but they weren’t traditional enough for your customary Thanksgiving meal, you could have whipped up one of the old standbys: Watergate Salad, Ambrosia Salad and Frog-Eye Salad, all made with pineapple, marshmallows and whipped topping (which is a topic for another day. For now, it is suffice to say whipped cream is a whipped topping but whipped topping is not whipped cream.)

If you thought that, because this was probably the only COVID Thanksgiving you’d ever experience, you needed to break the sweet salad mold, you could have gone with the celery/grated carrots/cabbage and lime Jell-O salad. No marshmallows, whipped cream, cream cheese or caramel sauce. If you chose to go this route, you should probably plan a trip to the confessional today: “Father, forgive me for I have sinned. I ate a Thanksgiving Day salad that truly was good for me.”

Town Receives $50,000 In Grant Funding To Help Businesses Winterize Outdoor Spaces The Town of Estes Park, in partnership with the Estes Valley Resiliency Collaborative (EVRC) and the Estes Park Economic Development Corporation (EDC), is pleased to announce the "Winterizing Outdoor Spaces" Program. This Program comes with $50,000 in funding to help Estes Park businesses invest in equipment and/or materials that will encourage continued and expanded use of outdoor spaces.

The new funding was awarded through the Colorado Department of Transportation's (CDOT's) Revitalizing Main Streets Program in response to a grant application that was submitted by Town staff in early September. The entire $50,000 award will be available to purchase equipment and/or materials that can be used to winterize the outdoor spaces of businesses located within the Town of Estes Park; for example, heaters, tents, vinyl curtains, or similar equipment and materials. In light of the recent announcement that Larimer County will be moving to Level 4 (Red) on November 24 at 5:00 p.m. (https://www.larimer.org/health/communicable-disease/coronavirus-covid19/safer-at-home), it is important for applicants who apply for assistance with items that might be considered "indoor

Nourishing Network Making MORE Meals By: Estes Park Nonprofit Resource Center

The Nourishing Network is determined (and able) to continue to ensure adequate and easy access to food for the community. If we can, we must! This program connects community to food and social services. The “meat” of this program is to feed people, to nourish them with healthy, hearty foods. But a hot meal is also an opportunity to meet our neighbors where they are, to hear what they might need, and refer them to services in town.

COVID, fires and strict restrictions continue to force the program to evaluate how to best serve the community. It is clear that the community is grateful for a hot meal. Anyone and everyone is welcome to pick up food for themselves and/or a neighbor. Who doesn’t need to feel supported right now? The program also delivers food to identified locations in order to help overcome transportation and mobility issues.

Some community members need help navigating increased needs due to job loss: utility assistance, mental health access, internet connection so their kids can do Cloud School, and more. EPNRC staff, along with other nonprofit representatives, are available at each meal to refer community members to services they may need.

The three free meals will continue to be available throughout the week. Saturday morning burritos (along with fruit, juice, and yogurt) are available at Falcon Ridge Clubhouse, 1629 Soaring Circle from 8-9 a.m. Monday lunch is Soup and Salad (last week, Chef Rich made chicken wild rice soup and quinoa veggie salad), served out of the American Legion and via the Estes Park Trolley at Dollar General from noon-1 p.m. Dinner is on

Wednesday nights; the food is purchased from and prepared by a local restaurant. Depending on the restrictions for restaurants, this element may need be executed “in-house” at the American Legion. This program is only possible because of collaborative partnerships!

Additional “heat and eat” family meals are prepared at the Legion and packaged to go. Any extra soup (or other meals) are also available to be picked up at the American Legion between 4-6pm (except Fridays). With the increase in restrictions, it is anticipated that this offering will become even more desirable.

Supply will adjust to demand.

Constant adaptation can be exhausting. A delicious hot meal is one way to help out. It is so important to stay healthy and safe, nourish ourselves, and reach out to neighbors and friends. EPNRC appreciates some of the good that our Townies are bringing to this program! Last week, individuals grabbed food to deliver to Habitat for Humanity volunteers working hard on a Saturday morning, elderly neighbors, and friends they knew who had just been let go from work.

• Ringers must stand six feet away from the kettle and cannot put money in the kettle for donors.

Two candidate vaccines for COVID-19 recently released promising phase III efficacy results, and a third vaccine, using a completely different mechanism of delivery and viral presentation for antibody response, is being tested locally by UCHealth.

What are the differences between the vaccines, how expensive are they, how rapidly can production be ramped up, and how safe are they for both the general population and especially relevant for Estes Park demographics, those over 55 years of age?

Estes Park resident and SARS-CoV-2 vaccine trial participant John Meissner will present a personal and professional view of vaccine development and availability this Saturday, November 28, at 240 Moraine Avenue, at the regularly scheduled Estes Park Archives program,

free of charge and repeated every half hour between 1:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m.

The pandemic has modified the typical format somewhat, with admission restricted to no more than four related family members or household occupants at any given time, and audience plus speaker(s) spread around the 14foot conference table, all wearing masks.

Everyone is welcome, provided screening questions and temperature checks are satisfied. At this time of year, no reservations are required, and wait times if another program is already underway are short, on comfortable chairs.

Discarded Fishing Line Can Be A Death Trap For Wildlife any other animals that frequent or live in the lake and other nearby fishing areas can be harmed and killed by careless fishers.

I believe most people who live and fish here in the Estes Valley are responsible about properly discarding fishing line and gear, but there are many who seem to think that fishing line left behind is not going to cause any harm since I regularly pick up discarded fishing line when I am there. In addition to putting wildlife at risk of injury and death, fishing line is a plastic pollutant that takes

are full, or if you are in an area where there is none of these recycling containers, please do not put the line into regular recycling containers. Instead, cut the line into small pieces about 12 inches long, and throw them into the trash.

To help reduce the injuries and death to wildlife, here are some steps to follow if you do fish: • Dispose of unwanted and broken fishing line in the monofilament recycling PVC tubes that are located at Lake Estes.

Recycled fishing line can be used to make tackle boxes, lures, and other items.

• If the fishing line recycling containers

• If your line gets snagged underwater, please take the time to retrieve as much of it as possible. Or, if your line get tangled in a bush or tree, remove it – it can be a death trap for birds that land in that bush or tree.

• Pick up after other fishers who either unintentionally or intentionally leave cut fishing line and gear behind.

And, for those of you who don’t fish but find discarded fishing line, please pick it up and dispose of it properly. Discarded fishing line blows into waterways, trees, and other places where it can be a danger or death sentence for wildlife.

During a recent walk at Lake Estes, I saw a goose with a fishing line that had encircled and tightened around its neck.

I was fortunate to be able to catch the goose within a couple of days since I don’t think it would have survived much longer. Although the fishing line was wrapped very tightly around the goose’s neck, I was able to cut and remove all the line, and the goose fully recovered.

Every year, thousands of birds are killed or injured by fishing line, according to the website, intoBirds. Additionally, fishing line can harm other aquatic life, as well as any other animals that might come into contact with discarded fishing line and hooks.

I became aware of the extremely harmful and lethal nature of fishing line and gear left behind by anglers when I moved to Denver in 2009, and bought a home near City Park where I took walks.

There is one large lake in the park, which attracts both waterfowl and fishers. My first rescue was a goose that had gotten a large fishing lure with multiple hooks caught in its beak, throat, and tongue, preventing it from eating. During the nine years I lived in Denver, I helped scores of birds, including geese, ducks, herons, and cormorants that got fishing line and hooks caught in and around their legs, wings, and necks.

When I moved to Estes Park two years ago, I didn’t expect to find a similar situ-

ation here since I assumed people who lived and visited here would be more conscientious about taking care of the environment and wildlife. However, I have unfortunately discovered a similar situation at Lake Estes and along the Big Thompson. I have caught and removed fishing line and hooks from the legs and feet of many of the resident Canada geese that live at the lake and adjoining golf course.

While it is easier to spot Canada geese that are affected by discarded fishing line and gear since they spend most of their time grazing on land, ospreys, bald eagles, ducks, shorebirds, songbirds, and

THE FEELING IS TOO SHORT-LIVED! Well, the week is about over and hopefully it was for you a week of ‘Thanksgiving’. I trust that you and your family were able to be truly thankful despite the things that we have faced. As far back as the pilgrim days, some families made it a practice to ask each person around the dinner table to share five things that they were personally grateful for, before eating their Thanksgiving meal. Like them, it’s good to specifically dwell on our blessings before partaking of our feast.

Unfortunately, this experience and the good feelings that come because of that sharing often are short-lived because people are urged to jump into ‘Black-Friday’ and to buy, buy big, and buy quickly. Where did the gratitude go? But because it DID go, we miss out on blessings that we could easily enjoy all year round. Someone has equated being thankful on ‘Thanksgiving only’ to going to the gym and working out only one day a year and think we’ve gotten the benefit of an exercise program. I’ve decided that this year is a year that I am determined to be ‘grateful’ every day and to an extent greater than ever before. I hope you will join me.

To begin, it may help to define what ‘gratitude’ is. Gratitude is broadly defined as an ‘appreciation of what is valuable and meaningful to us’. It is a habit that we can develop that focuses on and appreciates what we have, not what we do not have. And it needs to be pursued because there is a correlation between gratitude and a sense of overall wellbeing. In fact, indepth research has shown that one’s happiness level can be increased by as much as 25% by developing an ‘attitude of gratitude’. Consider this list of benefits gained from developing a growing sense of gratitude.

We are: (1) Happier. A wise man said: “The root of joy is gratefulness…it is not joy that makes us grateful, it is gratitude that makes us joyful.” (2) Healthier. Habitual gratitude is associated with better sleep, less stress, less depression, even decreased blood pressure in those with hypertension.

Grateful people have better appetites, report less illness and generally feel healthier. And, they live longer. (3) Grateful people show fewer negative emotions: anger, bitterness and resentment. (4) They enjoy their work more. Gratitude makes one a better manager and increases any worker’s productivity. (5) Grateful people enjoy improved relationships: including, and especially with, their spouses and children. They tend to make more friends and to enjoy deeper friendships. (6) They enjoy improved feelings of self-worth. With all these benefits having been proven by scientific…and other… research, we should decide that, for us, every day will be ‘thanks giving day’.

But, to decide that we are going to earnestly work on being more grateful is one thing, doing it is quite another. So, here are some suggestions from experts in the ‘positive thinking’ educational field that can help us…tried and true practices that can equip us to develop a ‘habit’ of gratitude. (1) Begin a Gratitude Journal. Get a journal and write down…each day…five things you are grateful for. Write down more as they come to mind. (2) Build a Gratitude Jar. Take a jar and cut small strips of paper and each day write down one thing you’re grateful for and put in the jar. If you ever get down, take a ‘gratitude’ out of the jar and read it to renew your spirit. At the end of the year take all the strips out of the jar and read them. I remember walking into the home of a woman on her deathbed and noticing a ‘Gratitude Jar’. It was filled with notes telling her the many things her children and grandchildren were grateful to her for. During those last days her children would stroke her hand and read ‘thank you’s from the jar. (3) Write a note to someone for whom you are grateful, then call them and read the note to them. And send lots of ‘thank you’ notes. (4) Periodically practice the ‘Count your many blessings’ exercise and note those that are special. (5) Practice saying ‘Thank you!’ in a sincere and meaningful way. (6) If you have a spiritual faith ‘pray often, giving thanks’ to your Father.

Well, what do you say? Will this ‘Thanksgiving Day’ launch you on a campaign to become a more grateful person enjoying all the benefits that come from that great spirit of gratitude?

Finding The Good: Final Salute November Is National Home Care And Hospice Month We were high school sweethearts. He happened to call me one Sunday afternoon when I was having a particularly hard time. I was in my early 30s living in the middle of Manhattan. It would seem that I had it all – good job, nice apartment, but I was alone and the Big Apple can be a really lonely place.

Then Lee called and we talked for hours. Couple of months later, I got on a plane and flew out to see him. We had a small, winter wedding in Loveland in 1984, his eight-year-old daughter, Laura our only attendant. I’d love to say we lived happily ever after, but we separated in 2001. We stayed friends because of our daughter and then because of our grandkids. We did every birthday and holiday together and we continued to respect and cherish each other.

Cancer moved slowly into our lives.

Lee at first refused to see a doctor. He believed they would inevitably find something and then make him do things he didn’t want to do. He could be very stubborn. Laura and I kept after him and with his mother weighing in, he finally agreed to go to the VA where they discovered lung cancer. He decided not to fight this awful disease beyond radiation. He had a couple of treatments, but refused chemo. He was living in Denver then, helping Laura with the grandkids when she was working. That ended as he got sicker – now it was “Grampy” who needed caring for.

Lee and I entered into a phase of acceptance which brought a special kind of freedom. For me, it was freeing to let go of my practice of trying to control everything. For the first time in many years all I had to do was appreciate him and walk beside him. As the pain got worse, the drugs got stronger.

At one point he asked me why he was so high. I told him it could be the morphine or any of the other heavy drugs he was taking now. We talked about God, life, the after-life. There was nothing out of bounds. We laughed really hard, much as we had when we were in high school, and shared stories of the things we’d done and experienced together.

Of course, I was frightened and sad about the inevitable, but it was also wonderful to be connecting again in this deep way at a very real moment of time. Then Lee started having visions.

“Why are we at the Statue of Liberty?” he asked me one evening. Having worked for Hospice, I knew those who are dying become less interested in the outside world and start looking into what comes next. Were his visions the act of starting to look ahead or were they hallucinations from oxygen dep-

rivation, dehydration or medication? I will never know, but have thought a great deal about his visions and our conversations since he died.

Soon Lee was needing much more care than Laura or I could give him.

Denver Hospice was called in roundthe-clock. Then came the time when even home care wasn’t enough and it was soon time for him to move from his apartment. A room opened up in the hospice unit of the Veteran’s Hospital in Denver and he moved in. In less than a week, I got a call that his breathing was becoming erratic and they expected he wouldn’t last through the night. I called Laura and she rushed to the VA, arriving before me. I flew down I-25, but by the time I arrived from Estes he had already died and was cool to the touch.

The VA staff told us they traditionally have a small ceremony, called the Final Salute with the other veterans in hospice care. The social worker brought out a small, well-worn speaker system and announced the service. All the men, most in pajamas and robes, came out and stood by the doors to their rooms in a kind of half circle with the nurse’s station in the middle. Reciting Lee’s Vietnam service record, the social worker also listed his medals. She accidentally used his middle name of Michael instead of his first name which caused Laura and I a brief moment of giggling. Soon the Star Bangled Banner crackled out of the speakers, all the men saluted, and holding each other’s hands, Laura and I walked behind the gurney holding Lee’s body, down a hall to a set of double doors.

Then silence while they wheeled him out of the hospice unit. We had two more ceremonies, one for family where my grandchildren, ages seven and nine read their ‘grandfather poems’ up on our backyard mountain, his sister and mother flying in and one at Fort Logan complete with a folded flag, taps and riffle shots. It is the simple Final Salute at the VA that really stays with me. The ceremony that makes me smile and remember my daughter standing by my side, was the one where they called Lee, Michael.

That ceremony was our unexpected gift.

This week’s featured animal is the wild turkey. Although it may seem obvious to select the turkey for the week of Thanksgiving, there are many fascinating features about this unique-looking bird. Have a wonderful Thanksgiving and enjoy Turkey Day! 1. According to stories told over the years, Benjamin Franklin was not a fan of selecting the bald eagle for America’s national bird. His choice was believed to be the turkey. In a letter to his daughter, Franklin stated, “the bald eagle…is a bird of bad moral character.

He does not get his living honestly… [he]is too lazy to fish for himself. The turkey is a much more respectable bird, and withal a true original native of America. ” 2. Wild turkeys appear cumbersome and awkward when on the ground, but these large birds can actually fly. According to the National Wildlife Federation, wild turkeys can fly at speeds up to 55 miles per hour in short flights.

Domestic turkeys, however, cannot fly

thanks to years of breeding to fatten them up for dinner tables. This larger size has made them too heavy to take off.

3. You can tell the sex of a turkey by the shape of their feces. The feces of male turkeys are j-shaped, while female turkeys are more spiral.

4. Although most people associate turkeys with being on the ground, these unique birds actually roost each evening high in trees where they are safe from most predators.

5. Because of their popularity with hunters, turkeys have many nicknames. These include thunder chicken, hammerhead, boss tom, Mr. Waddles, gobblers, mossback, and long beard.

Male turkeys, called toms, have a flashy display of fanned tail feathers that they shake to attract females during the spring mating season.

Being the national bird of the U.S. doesn't seem unreasonable since wild turkeys have skin on their head that can appear red, white and blue during the mating season.

Estes Park Museum Online Book Program: Then And Now, Author Picks

On Friday, December 4, 2020 from 2:00 - 3:30 p.m. join authors and photographers, Dr. James Pickering, Derek Fortini, and Mic Clinger as they discuss their book, Estes Park and Rocky Mountain National Park: Then and Now, Revised Edition. This program will highlight the authors' favorite sites in the Estes Park and Rocky Mountain National Park region. The program will take place via Zoom and audience members will have the opportunity to interact virtually with the panelists via a question and answer chat box. 2020 offers all of us the opportunity to celebrate not only the passage of the 19th Amendment but also the achievements of women over that last 100 years. Celebrations are planned nation-wide, in every state and in local communities.

A number of local organizations and community leaders, under the leadership of Jean McGuire, have formed a committee to coordinate the local celebration under the title, “100 Years: A Celebration of Women.” As a part of the festivities, we plan to collect stories about Estes Valley women in the form of paragraphs. Submission period: now through the end of November.

Maximum length: 200 words, A story about any woman with a connection to Estes Park. These paragraphs will be collected by the Estes Valley Library. They will then appear in the local newspapers and 100 will be chosen to be published as a booklet for November release.

Lance Mumford

Lance William Mumford, 35, died at his home in Estes Park, CO on November 15, 2020. Lance was born to Diane (Zausch) and Rick Mumford January 16, 1985 in El Dorado, MO. Lance graduated Estes Park High School in 2003. He received a Basketball scholarship to Hastings College in Nebraska. Lance graduated from Hastings College with a bachelor degree and came home to Estes Park. He was a good coworker who worked at local businesses Village Pizza and Lonigans. Anyone who knew Lance knew he was a passionate Kansas City Chiefs fan and big sports fan in general. You may also remember Lance

from the local Estes Park bowling leagues that he was a member of. He also enjoyed studying Acupuncture and Chinese medicine. Lance is survived by his parents Rick and Diane of Estes Park, CO, aunts and uncles Steven and Sandy of Austin, TX and John and Janet of Savannah, GA, and many cousins and friends.

Deborah Kiple Deb worked at the Ottumwa Public Library and Hospice of Wapello County during their years in Ottumwa. In 1998, Deb and Jim moved to Estes Park, Colorado where they lived until they moved to Decorah, Iowa in early 2019 to be in a lower altitude to help her health, and to be closer to her children.

Surviving are her husband of 56 years, James Kiple; her three children: Julia (David) Sollien of Decorah, IA, Joseph (Jacqueline) Kiple of Johnston, IA, and Sarah (Shawn) Hunt of Ridgeway, IA; her three grandchildren Lane Kiple, Thomas Kiple and Sierra (Devin) Presley; her sisters Sarah (Don) Welp of Loveland, CO and Julia Deborah Kiple, age 77, of Decorah, (Keith) Zastrow of Brighton, MI, and Iowa, passed away peacefully at Winher many friends who she loved neshiek Medical Center in Decorah on dearly. Kenneth Smith Kenneth Smith passed away on November 20th, 2020 at the age of 77 after a long battle with Parkinson’s Disease.

He was born September 21st, 1943 in Kansas City, Missouri to Bill and Margarette Smith.

He lived in Norfolk, Nebraska where he graduated high school and met the love of his life, Carol Cook. They were married in 1964. Ken received his Bachelor’s and Master’s Degrees from Wayne State College. Ken and Carol moved to Wausa, Nebraska where he taught for six years.

In 1971 Ken and Carol moved to York, Nebraska, He was a dedicated high school teacher in York and loved his stu-

dents and co-workers.

He retired in 2000 and he and Carol moved to Estes Park CO where they managed Rockmount Cottages until 2013. Wanting to be close to family they moved back to Lincoln, Nebraska.

Ken had many hobbies and led a very active life. He rode his bicycle across Nebraska twice. He loved running, hiking, fishing, model train hobby, Husker football, and his love of music took him to many concerts, including his favorite Pink Floyd.

Ken and Carol traveled throughout the United States, Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands. A dream of his was to take a Windjammer Cruise which came true

when he and Carol sailed in the Caribbean. He helped hoist the sails as they sailed through the beautiful water. He loved the mountains and hiked Longs Peak when he was 60 years old. He and Carol enjoyed many moonlight hikes with friends in Rocky Mountain National Park.

Ken enjoyed sharing the beautiful Rockies with his family and friends and enjoyed fishing, hiking and playing chess with his grandson Tristan Smith.

Ken loved his wonderful children, Shawn and Holly. He was so proud of them and spent every minute he could with them.

Special thanks to everyone at Tabitha Rehabilitation Center in Lincoln, Nebraska for taking such wonderful care of Ken this past year and a half. Also thanks to his wonderful doctor, Dr. Andrew Bohart of Lincoln.

Ken is survived by his beloved wife, Carol; son, Shawn (Heather Cho) Smith, of Midlothian, Virginia and daughter Holly

Smith (John Gutierrez) of Lincoln, Nebraska and very special grandson Tristan Smith, a-Virginia Tech student and from Midlothian, Virginia. Also his sister Pat Costello (Rhonda) of Lincoln, NE., brothers Bill (Ann) Smith of Bloomfield, NE. And Ron (Connie) Smith Sioux City, Iowa. Brother-in-law Don (Kathy) Cook, Lincoln, Nebraska, and sister-in-law Cathy (Dennis) Luck Westminster, MD. He loved his many nieces, nephews, and cousins. Spending time with his family was very important to him.

Ken was preceded in death by his parents, infant sister Susie.

A family and friends gathering will take place in the spring to honor Ken’s memory.

Memorials may be given to the family for a future memorial in Ken’s honor.
