Celebrate The Vision Get Involved In Estes Park’s Centennial Next year is a big year for the Estes Park community. After celebrating the 100th anniversary of Rocky Mountain National Park and the 100th anniversary of the National Park Service, 2017 will mark the 100th anniversary of the Town of Estes Park. Of course, Estes Park existed before 1917, but that year we became a full-fledged incorporated Town under the Constitution of the State of Colorado, gaining all the benefits that go with being our own Town. The leaders back in 1917 had the vision to see how that distinction allowed us to guide our own destiny, provide services that citizens desire, and gave us a level of self-autonomy in the community and ultimately a better quality of life for the residents and guests of our mountain village.

Fast forward 100 years and we are all benefiting from the vision and forward-thinking of those civic leaders 100 years ago.

It's a time to celebrate those first 100 years and celebrate the anticipation of moving forward into the next century.

The Estes Park Centennial Celebration Team has been working on plans for our yearlong celebration of the Town of Estes Park and we invite everyone who lives, plays, visits, works or just loves our town to celebrate as well. It's time to “Celebrate the Vision. ” Although our actual anniversary date is April 17, 2017, we plan to celebrate all year starting with Winter Festival in January. All year long, Town events will

have a Centennial flavor. We plan to celebrate with a birthday party at the Mountain Festival, and we plan to hold a special event Aug. 5, 2017. (Can you figure out why that date is significant?!)

Thanks to Visit Estes Park, we have a wonderful Centennial Logo that you will see all over town throughout 2017. A major effort of

the yearlong celebration is funding a Legacy Project to make improvements to the Knoll-Willows Open Space and renaming the area to honor our Centennial. Plans are in place for trail improvements, interpretive signing, benches, restoration of damaged areas and other improvements, while maintaining the natural character of this special area. You'll begin seeing products with the Centennial Logo appearing in

local stores and at special events. A special license is required to use the logo for events and products and a portion of the sale of all licensed products and 100 percent of the licensing fees will help fund the Legacy Project.

Why am I writing about this in 2016?

Well because now it's your turn. We need your help, your creativity and your participation. Do you belong to a group that is having an event in 2017?

Make it all that more special by giving it a Centennial Theme. Do you have ideas for Centennial activities? Can your service club, church or youth group plan something special for the Centennial? Do you volunteer for a nonprofit in Town? If so, can your group plan something special around the Centennial? Are you a business owner? Can you offer special Centennial products?

Put Centennial items on your menus? Promote the Centennial through your signs, windows and advertising? Do you have an idea for collectable Centennial items, from the inexpensive to the highly collectable and valuable?

Boy Scout Troop 8 will begin their annual Christmas Tree Lot, located at Estes Park Lumber Yard, this Friday, November 25. They will be open from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. There will be fresh-cut trees, as well as farm trees to choose

from. The Scouts will be at the tree lot selling trees each Thursday and Friday, 3:30 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. You can always stop by Lumber Yard during the day and someone will help you with

your purchase.

This annual Christmas Tree sale is the only fundraiser that Troop 8 does during the year and this helps fund the scouting program for things like camping and activities to earn merit badges.

A-B-C-D November birthdays. November birthdays. Hmmm. The first four letters of the alphabet will serve as an appropriate title for this column. For A we turn to the fairer sex and Abigail Adams (1744 to 1818) who was the wife of our second president and the mother of our sixth.

(Obviously no other presidential parent can make such a claim!) She was born in Massachusetts on November 11, 1744, and is remembered for the extensive correspondence (fortunately still preserved) she would maintain with her husband, especially when he became President in 1797. Should you ever come across it, or references to it in current literature, keep in mind that Abigail never attended school.

Her husband John was heavily involved in the creation of a new government after the American revolution, and when not occupied with their Massachusetts farm she spent considerable time with him in New York and Philadelphia where the new nation’s leadership originally met. When she was left at home it was their correspondence which kept them close together. Historians believe they exchanged more than eleven hundred letters, many of which reveal his seeking political counsel from her. In one of her letters to him she requests that the new government “remember the Ladies” and not give their husbands unlimited powers.

Abigail accompanied husband John to Europe after our revolution, first to France and then to England where he served as our first minister (ambassador) to the British government. When John Adams became our first vice-president she stayed with him in New York city, but often returned to look after their Massachusetts farm. When her husband became President she vocally supported him in the face of popular opposition amid a broad wave of criticism of what were known as the Alien and Sedition Acts of 1798.

Following the loss of the presidential election in 1800 to Thomas Jefferson the Adamses retired to their family farm where they could spend more time together. Their young daughter Nabby died of cancer at their home in 1814. Abigail Adams had her own health problems for decades, and in October of 1818 suffered a stroke. With her family around her she died at home October 28, 1818.

With the letter B we move to Alben Barkley. He was born in Kentucky on November 24, 1877. Barkley would spend forty-two years in national politics. In 1913 he was elected to the U. S. House of Representatives. Fourteen years later he entered the U. S. Senate. When Franklin Roosevelt entered the White House in 1933 Barkley was elected the Senate’s majority leader.

In 1948 President Truman chose Barkley as his vice presidential running mate. Ruminating about that job Barkley told the story of the mother who had two

sons. “One went to sea; the other became vicepresident. Neither was ever heard from again. ” In 1954 he ran for the Senate against the highly favored John S. Cooper, and with a surprising upset victory returned control of the Senate to the Democrats. Barkley spent forty-two years in national politics. He was speaking at Washington University in Lexington, Virginia when he collapsed and died on April 30, 1956. To the end of his life he was known as “The Veep. ” O. K. There’s an “A” and a “B.” Now turning to the letter C we’ll try still a different profession and a different state.

Born on November 14, 1900 --- in Brooklyn, New York. Wanna guess?

Brooklyn!!! For nearly four decades he provided a distinctively American style to modern music. How about “Fanfare for the Common Man” . .. and “Appalachian Spring. ” Aaron Copland spent his early years studying European composers . .. in Europe. In the mid 1920s he returned to the U. S. and gave us . .. AMERICAN music.

We know El Salon Mexico and A Lincoln Portrait. Numerous movies have a Copland film score. Common music and uncommon, as Howard Pollack describes it in his lengthy biography. Not only did Copland excel as a composer, but also as a conductor and a teacher. He passed away in New York in 1990 at age 90.

Let’s see: we have a WRITER, a POLITICIAN, and a MUSIC COMPOSER, though each of them was more than just that. What then . .. to conclude this column? Someone from the world of sports? Hmmm, why not! We have A, B, and C. We need a D. Our D was born on November 25, 1914. Place: Martinez, California. His given name at birth: Giuseppe Paolo DiMaggio. Now, if you don’t know the name, well, you don’t know baseball. He was the eighth child in a family which moved from Sicily in 1898. His father was a fisherman . .. who, we read, was very disappointed when his son did not want to follow in that occupation.

Joe, which is an obvious Americanization of Giuseppe, dropped out of high school at age sixteen . .. to play baseball EVERY day. He had an older brother Vince, who was playing minor league baseball, and when the minor league team ran short of players, Vince offered his brother’s name. Joe showed up for the last few games of the season. The rest is history.

Joe DiMaggio started in the minor leagues with a bang. In his first full season he batted. 340 with 28 home runs.

He also, ho hum, hit safely in 61 consecutive games. In his third season in the minors he batted. 398. He was then sold to the New York Yankees. Need more be said. When he joined the Yankees the team proceeded to win four consecutive World Series. Four years . .. as World Champions!!!

Trail Ridge Road Closes To Through Travel For The Season

As of Friday, November 18, 2016, Trail Ridge Road in Rocky Mountain National Park officially closed for the season to through travel. The most popular destinations for this time of year including Bear Lake Road, Moraine Park, Horseshoe Park and the section of Trail Ridge Road along the Kawuneeche Valley are all open. These are all great areas for hiking and wildlife watching.

Trail Ridge Road, one of the most impressive alpine highways in the United States, is the highest continuous paved road in America and reaches an elevation of 12,183 feet. The road connects the park’s communities of Estes Park on the east and Grand Lake on the west.

Trail Ridge Road is not designed to be an all season road with 11 miles above 11,500 feet and few guard rails and no shoulder. There are winter conditions of drifting snow, high winds and below freezing temperatures above 10,000 feet.

The road is currently closed at Colorado River Trailhead on the west side and Many Parks Curve on the east side.

According to superintendent Darla Sidles, “The mild weather this fall has given us a rare opportunity to enjoy Trail Ridge Road this late in the season. During this most recent storm we have received an accumulation of snow accompanied by high winds and freezing temperatures. Driving conditions are extremely hazardous at higher elevations.

With the extended forecast of winds and below freezing temperatures, snow clearing operations become futile above 10,000 feet. During the winter season,

weather permitting, we will keep Trail Ridge Road open to Many Parks Curve on the east side of the park and to the Colorado River Trailhead on the west side of the park.”

The latest Trail Ridge Road has closed was on December 2, 1933. The average winter closure dates for Trail Ridge Road have been October 23. Although often times the road closes earlier and does not reopen, the previous ten year’s official closure dates are: October 29, 2015, November 4, 2014, October 22, 2013, October 17, 2012, October 27, 2011, October 29, 2010, October 21, 2009, November 6, 2008, October 22, 2007, October 23, 2006. The central portion of Trail Ridge Road normally opens the last week in May, weather permitting. This year Trail Ridge Road opened on May 28.

Old Fall River Road closed for the season on October 3. Trail Ridge Road and Old Fall River Road will remain open to bicycles and leashed pets until December 1, re-opening on April 1, except during road maintenance operations and emergency closures as posted. Cyclists and pet owners may utilize the road at their own risk. On December 1, both of these roads will revert to "winter trail status" which means that bicycles and leashed pets are not permitted beyond the closed gates.

CDOT To Open US 34 To All Traffic For Thanksgiving Holiday The Colorado Department of Transportation will temporarily open U.S. 34 to all drivers traveling between Estes Park and Loveland over the Thanksgiving Holiday.

The three-mile section of highway on the east end of the canyon that has been closed since mid-October will open at 4 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 23, to all motorists with or without residential permits. This stretch from Mile Points 77 to 80 will close again on Sunday, Nov. 27, at 7 p.m.

While the roadway is open, a traffic signal and flaggers will help guide drivers through a single-lane section of highway near MP 77. Drivers should be prepared to stop for up to 10 minutes.

This opening is part of CDOT’s promise to reduce the inconvenience to canyon residents and nearby communities as much as possible. Drivers should remember to drive slowly and be prepared to stop at the single lane section.

Until just before the Memorial Day weekend 2017, the canyon will be closed to through-traffic, however open to all drivers east of mile marker 80 and west of mile marker 77. To reach properties in

the canyon, and travel between Estes Park and Loveland, drivers should use the detour on US 36 and SH 66.

US 34 Big Thompson Canyon’s roads and bridges were heavily damaged during the 2013 floods with many homes damaged and over 100 air lifted evacuations. The canyon and its residents also suffered from flooding in 1976. As a result of these two events CDOT has been studying the hydraulic flow of the river in the canyon and its impact on the road and bridges along its path while looking for safety improvements and resiliency solutions to prevent/protect against future flood events.

Street Closures In Effect For Nov. 25 Catch The Glow Parade The annual Catch the Glow Parade will light up downtown Estes Park beginning at 5:30 p.m. the day after Thanksgiving, Friday, Nov. 25. At 5 p.m. the Estes Park Police Department will close Elkhorn Avenue and the remainder of the parade route. The parade route will begin at the West Park Center (400-block of West Elkhorn Avenue) and travel east on Elkhorn Avenue. The parade will turn right at the U.S. 36/U.S. 34 intersection, traveling to Colorado Hwy. 7 and continuing to the Fourth Street entrance of the Fairgrounds at Stanley Park, where the route ends.

Downtown loading zones will be closed the night of Nov. 24 in preparation for the parade. Additional parking spaces in the municipal parking lot adjacent to Elkhorn Avenue and the library will be designated Accessible Parking only for parade day.

Side streets along the parade route remain open during the parade, but access to the parade route will be prohibited until the parade passes and pedestrians are clear of the roadway. Motorists will not be able to leave parking lots along the parade route until the parade has passed. To bypass the downtown area, motorists may use alternate routes in-

cluding the Moccasin bypass, Graves or Manford Avenues to Community Drive, U.S. 36 to Mall Road, U.S. 34/Big Thompson Avenue, and Wonderview Avenue. Wonderview Avenue will serve as an alternative to downtown for eastbound traffic on U.S. 34 and westbound traffic from U.S. 36.

The Elkhorn Express trolley will provide service from the Fairgrounds Park-n-Ride to the Estes Park Visitor Center to Bond Park on Elkhorn Avenue from 12 p.m. until 8 p.m. This loop takes about 20 minutes during normal traffic. The trolley will suspend service during the parade to join the floats. Residents and guests are encouraged to use the Park-n-Ride and trolley service on parade day. Upcoming Public Meetings And Decisions On Vacation Rentals: Nov. 29, Dec. 1, Dec. 15 At least three meetings in Estes Park are scheduled during the next four weeks to continue reviewing proposed regulations concerning vacation home rentals in the Estes Valley. All November and December meetings will feature opportunities for public comment.

The Estes Valley Planning Commission will continue its discussion of vacation rental in a special meeting and public hearing Nov. 29 at 1:30 p.m. in the Town Board Room of Town Hall, 170 MacGregor Ave. At this meeting, the Commission is expected to vote on recommended amendments to the Estes Valley Development Code regarding vacation rentals. Planning Commission recommendations are forwarded to the Estes Park Town Board and the Board of Larimer County Commissioners for final review and decisions.

In a separate review, the Estes Park Board of Appeals will meet Dec. 1 at 4 p.m. in the Town Board Room to consider whether several 2015 Building Code amendments are appropriate to address vacation rental issues. Board of Appeals code recommendations for amendment are sent to the Town Board for final action. The Town’s Building Codes do not apply outside the Town boundaries. At this time, no meeting is scheduled for the Larimer County Board of Appeals in connection with vacation rental building code matters in unincorporated Larimer County.

A third meeting is scheduled for Dec. 15 at 6 p.m. for the Town Board and the Board of Larimer County Commissioners. This joint meeting includes a public hearing and will take place in the Town Board Room. At this meeting, the two Boards may choose to act on vacation rental amendments to the Estes Valley

Development Code.

All meetings take place in the Town Board Room of Town Hall, 170 MacGregor Ave. Meeting materials are posted as they become available at www.estes.org/boardsandmeetings.

Community members are encouraged to participate in these meetings or submit comments in advance to planning@estes.org.

Earlier this year the Vacation Rental Task Force of community representatives convened specifically to formulate recommendations for vacation rentals with nine or more occupants. The Estes Park Town Board of Trustees, Board of Larimer County Commissioners, and Estes Valley Planning Commission discussed Task Force recommendations at a joint meeting convened Aug. 30 and directed staff to draft code amendments that implement the recommendations.

The Estes Valley model for land-use regulations is unique in Colorado. The Town of Estes Park and Larimer County partnered in the mid-1990s to develop the Estes Valley Comprehensive Plan, a unified vision for land-use planning in both the incorporated and unincorporated areas of the Estes Valley. In 2000, they jointly established the Estes Valley Development Code. The Planning Commission reviews development and subdivision proposals within the entire Estes Valley, though the final decision-making authority lies with the Larimer County Commissioners and Town Board for their respective jurisdictions.

Support A Lasting Legacy - Centennial Open Space At Knoll-Willows Make a donation, host an official event or sell licensed logo merchandise Work is underway to ensure Estes Park's 2017 Centennial Celebration has a lasting legacy rooted in the Knoll-Willows Open Space, a beloved natural area in the heart of downtown Estes Park.

The Knoll-Willows will benefit from Centennial proceeds and donations, and will be rededicated as "Centennial Open Space at Knoll-Willows." The Centennial theme "Estes Park at 100: Celebrate the Vision" and a logo depicting the lasting strength and legacy of the area are available to mark officially sanctioned events and products; the community is encouraged to contribute to the legacy project through direct donations, hosting of a Centennial event, or licensing products.

In partnership with the Estes Valley Land Trust and the Centennial Celebration Team, the Estes Park Public Works Department has identified priorities to enhance the Knoll-Willows open space for public enjoyment during the Town's Centennial year and for years to come.

This tentative wish list will be implemented by Public Works staff, which manages the area, as Centennial donations and proceeds allow.

Scott Ponds Natural Area Project Complete!

Community members joined Estes Park Mayor Todd Jirsa, Town Board members, Town staff and project contractors for a ribbon-cutting to celebrate completion of the reconstructed Scott Ponds Natural Area dams Nov. 16.

Project background: During the 2013 flood, the lower dam at Scott Ponds Natural Area was breached. The Colorado Office of Emergency Management awarded the Town of Estes Park a Colorado Disaster Emergency Funds grant to restore the dams in accordance with current safety regulations. This included rebuilding of the upper dam, installing a

new overflow spillway, and building a new outlet structure. The pond at the lower dam was deepened and the dam was regraded to safely convey storm runoff.

The adjacent areas disturbed during construction have been reseeded with a native seed mix including wildflowers.

Natural creek flow and runoff will fill the ponds over the winter and spring.

When full, the west pond will have an approximate depth of 10 feet at the dam outlet. Colorado Parks and Wildlife will stock this pond with rainbow, brown and brook trout in the spring.

The charge(s) are merely an accusation and the defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.

On November 12 at 11:37 p.m. police were called to a disturbance in the 100 block of E. Elkhorn Ave. Upon arrival police arrested a 48 year old male from Estes Park and charged him with felony menacing, third degree assault and domestic violence and two counts on a violation of a restraining order from Ford, KS. The victims were a 47 year old and a 21 year old. The male was transported to Larimer County Detention Center.

On November 21 at 3:14 a.m. police were called about an assault in the 300

block of W. Riverside Drive. Upon arrival they charged a 25 year old male from Estes Park with third degree assault and domestic violence against a 23 year old victim. He was transported to Larimer County Detention Center.

On November 16 at 6:29 a.m. police cited a 47 year old male from Estes Park in the 100 block of E. Elkhorn Ave. for a violation against the wildlife protection ordinance, having an unsecured dumpster.

On November 20 at 2:45 p.m. police received a REDDI report of a male in the 300 block of W. Riverside Drive. The 48 year old male from Estes Park was charged with DUI, DUI per se and later released to a responsible person.

EPNEWS.COM Did you look around the room at any one moment yesterday and take note of how many noses were pointed at a handheld device? Maybe diners were polite enough to put their cell phones and iPads away during the actual meal. But sitting around afterward, when the leftovers were in their Tupperware, the dishes were washed, the tablecloth and napkins dumped in the laundry basket—what happened? Did you play a board game? Maybe play cards? Go for a walk? Tell family lore to the youngsters? Or did the universal group unpocket their devices, peck at the flat little keys, zoom into their screens and zone out of the Thanksgiving gathering to check e-mail, texts, You Tube, Facebook, Instagram and Twitter?

I point a finger at myself as much as at anyone else. (And I point it at my iPhone keyboard a lot too.) I use my devices to refer to recipes, watch how-to videos, show recent photos to others, and see how many new messages have come across the cloud that simply cannot wait. (Which is none.

They all can wait.) Even when I’m not particularly driven to immerse myself in the eWorld, sometimes I do it because everyone else is. It’s hard to carry on a conversation with someone when there is a device between us, preventing eye contact. It’s easier to join ‘em when you can’t beat ‘em. After a period of small-screen time, however, my neck gets tired and I get a pit in my gut, which could possibly be from too much whipped cream on my pumpkin pie. (Is there such a thing?) This rotgut feels heavier and more apathetic than that.

That said, I have to cram in all of my electronic entanglements now because my New Year resolution will be to cut back on my device time.

• Instead of spending way too much time on Facebook seeing what other people are doing, I’m going to get off my sit-upon and do more myself. Rarely do I post, and it will stay that way (except for posting this column weekly on Facebook. I want it to be easily accessible to those who do like to be online.) I’ve broken up with Facebook before but have slowly crawled back over time. Starting in 2017, I’m going to make more of an effort to make sure Facebook and I remain just…friends.

• I’m going to write with a pen in my hand more and type less. Apple tells me my 2009 MacBook Pro is “vintage” and soon they will stop supporting it. I need to build up the callous on the side of my right tallman finger so my writing hand is prepped and ready to go when my computer calls it quits.

• I’m going to look up recipes in the cookbooks, file folder and recipe box I have on the shelf rather than immediately go to Epicurious.com. There is therapy in flipping through those pages with dated photos and recipe cards with Gram’s or Mom’s

handwritten notations in the margins. Food stains on the page are even better, proving the recipes are tried and true.

• I am not going to stop reading the newspaper. Printed news delivered to the door early in the morning is not as current as what we can get on the Web. But I don’t need up-to-the-second news that may or may not be true. A newspaper is more indepth, is more likely to be factual, it feels right in my hands, and it doesn’t jam up when my breakfast toast crumbs fall on it.

• I intend to use the heavy American Heritage Dictionary my grandmother gave me in 1978 to look up words instead of looking them up on my computer. Same goes with my Roget’s International Thesaurus. I love these two tomes—their onion-skin-thin pages, their pulpy scent, their heft on my lap, their history. These guys are my friends—we go way back, and I don’t intend to neglect our relationship now.

The problem with my aged dictionary is that it is slightly outdated. I love the word coinkydink (also cowinkidink and quinkydink) but it doesn’t appear in any form in my old-fashioned, paper reference book. I had to go online to verify that indeed, coinkydink is a word. What a coincidence!

(That’s the definition.) It is used as urban slang and not as a formal noun. Despite coinkydink being found only online, it is such a playful word that I intend to use it when I can as I am writing with a pen on paper.

• I’m thinking about going back to using a paper calendar. It won’t provide alerts and maps, but I really like to look at an entire month without having to get out the magnifying glass. I’ll keep you posted on how successful I am at this.

This electronic-centered world we’re living in is wonderful. I am grateful for the instant access it provides and the easy connection with friends and family near and far. But I recognize that too much of my time is getting swallowed up by false information (FYI: Taylor Swift is not moving to Estes Park), tripe, and useless gossip. It’s time to put on my real-world pantsuit (I couldn’t resist) and get out there to experience more of what there is to see and do and spend less time watching it on a screen. Please join me.

(Note: This entire column was written so that I could use the perky word coikydink, an online-only word. This self-contradiction has not gone unnoticed. In my defense, I am doing my part to bring it to life, from the screen to the written page.)

“Bells & Whistles” Model Railroad Exhibit At The Museum To celebrate the Estes Valley Model Railroaders being part of the Estes Park area community for 40 years there will be a model railroad exhibit - “Bells & Whistles” - at the Estes Park Museum December 3, 2016. Featured in the exhibit will be an operating “Kid’s layout,” displays of fine scale modules, talks by “Abner Sprague” (aka Kurtis Kelly) about early railroading in the Estes Valley, and demonstrations of building and operating a model railroad. The exhibit and all activities are free and open to the public.

In cooperation with the “Bells & Whistles” exhibit, the Estes Valley Public Library will have its “Story Time” at the museum Thursday, Friday and Saturday, December 1, 2, 3, 2016 from 10:30 a.m. to 11:15 a.m. The club’s interactive “Kids Layout” will be at each “Story Time” ses-

sion.

Since 1977 the club has built several operating model railroad modules displayed in and around town as well as at shows and museums all along the Colorado Front Range. Several of the modules will be on display at the Anniversary Exhibit. The “Flying Scotsman” is a club built model layout that is a replica of the regions in Scotland where the prototype train operated. That layout was exhibited at the Scottish-Irish Festival in Estes Park for several seasons. Photos of club and member layouts will be at the exhibit.

With the holidays approaching, there will be a Christmas train exhibit. Bells & Whistles will be a great place to see examples for a train under the Christmas tree as well as ideas for decorating and gifts.

“Bells & Whistles” Train Storytime At The Estes Park Museum Join the youth librarians from Estes Valley Library for stories, songs, and puppet shows all about trains at the Estes Park Museum. The program will be repeated on December 1, 2, and 3 from 10:30 – 11:15 a.m. Following the story, children and families are encouraged to interact with the Estes Valley Model Railroader’s electric train table.

There will be train whistles, buttons to press, and lots to see at this special storytime. No registration is required for this free program. Recommended for families with children ages 6 and under. This is a kick-off community program to celebrate the Club's 40th anniversary in

2017.

On December 3 from 12 to 4 p.m. the general public is invited to come into the Museum to see the temporary installation “Bells & Whistles” and exhibit celebrating the Estes Valley Model Railroaders 40th Anniversary. There will be interactive trains for all ages and history on the Estes Valley Model Railroaders Club and railroad history of Colorado.

Kurtis Kelly will be in character as Estes Park pioneer and surveyor Abner Sprague. All of these activities are free and take place at the Estes Park Museum located at 200 Fourth Street, Estes Park.

Estes Park Repertoire Theatre Thanks You! The Estes Park Repertoire Theatre family wishes to thank the theatre goers and supporters of our efforts for the sellout crowds who joined us the past two week-ends for our 30th production.

The crowds responded to “A Bench in the Sun” by Ron Clark with great comments to the cast and crew after each performance.

Our cast of Nancy Thomas, Michael Dzik and Rich Mitchell did an outstanding job making the play work. Our Director, Christann Higley did an outstanding job bringing the script and actors together for each of the performances. Our technical crews of Mike Bonk, Jeff Miller, and Tim McLemore did a great job. We are proud of their support of the cast.

Again our thanks to all concerned with this production and will soon be in rehearsal for our next show planned for early next year.

Volunteer Opportunities With The American Red Cross In Estes Valley Did you know that you can be part of the American Red Cross right here in Estes Valley? In our community we understand, from experience, the need to be prepared for the unexpected. When our neighbors reach out for our help, we are there for each other. The American Red Cross invites you to take a meaningful step toward becoming disaster-ready.

In Estes Park, we are especially looking for volunteers who want to help operate a shelter during a disaster. Shelter volunteers provide a safe place to sleep, hot meals and much needed comfort to those affected by disaster. Shelters are needed for major disasters like the 2013 Flood, wildfire evacuations, and even winter emergencies.

There are two options for becoming a shelter volunteer: 1. Shelter Workers are trained through a series of classes offered by the American Red Cross. Many of the classes can be taken online! Shelter workers do a variety of jobs in a shelter including registration, referrals for other services, food service, providing information and updates, and assisting clients with registration for Safe and Well. An application and background check are required.

2. Interested in helping out during emergencies, but don’t have a lot of time? Then the Estes Park Brigade may be for you! We are in need of new members to join our team. The Estes Park Brigade is a group of 20-30 members who help with coordinating meal supplies from pre-qualified sources. They procure needed items such as pet food and dry clothes. They also respond to meet many unexpected needs. Enjoy or-

ganizing? We are also in need of a volunteer to be the coordinator of the Estes Brigade. The only requirement for membership is a background check.

Auditions For Fine Arts Guild Production Of “The Secret Garden” Auditions for the Fine Arts Guild production of, The Secret Garden will be held Saturday, January 7th, at 5 p.m. at the Hempel Auditorium at the YMCA of the Rockies.

Leading roles are available for four women, three men, and three children with supporting/chorus roles for four-five women and four to five men.

Recover Colorado Highway 34 Road Closure And Flood Grants Meeting For Business Owners Your business could be eligible for up to $50,000 from a Recover Colorado Grant due to substantial economic harm from the ongoing Highway 34 road closures. As the State of Colorado and local partners work to rebuild roads and restore watersheds to better withstand future disaster, businesses may experience economic impact from road closures. These funds supplement previous funds, making it possible for a business to receive up to $50,000 for disaster losses and a separate additional grant of up to $50,000 for ongoing losses caused by Highway 34 road closures.

A full closure of US 34 between mile points 77 and 80 is in place until the

start of the 2017 Memorial Day weekend. Until then, this three-mile section of the canyon will be closed to through traffic. US 34 will remain open to drivers east of mile point 80 (near Cedar Cove) and west of mile point 77 (just east of Drake). The only through access on US 34 until next Memorial Day weekend will be for canyon residents through a permit process. Permitted vehicles will be allowed through the canyon from 6 8:30 a.m. and 4 - 7 p.m. each day.

Estes Park Wellness Center Capital Campaign Approved For Colorado Tax Credit On Thursday November 17, 2016 the Colorado Economic Development Commission approved the EPMC Foundation Enterprise Zone application for its capital campaign. This makes the EPMC Wellness Center a contributing project and anchor institution for wellness projects and a continued industry sector in the Estes Valley.

Estes Park EDC President and CEO Jon Nicholas was in attendance at the hearing and later stated that this will enable the EPMC Foundation to offer a 25% Colorado income tax credit to the capital campaign's contributors. He went on to say that the tax credit can be claimed for up to $750,000 per year with a cap of $100,000 for an individual donor.

We owe a special thanks to Larimer County Enterprise Zone Administrator and Estes Park EDC Board Member Jacob Castillo, who helped ensure the success of the application. There was a great deal of thought and effort needed to ensure that the Office of Economic Development and International Trade staff and ultimately the Commission were comfortable with the application. The Estes Park EDC plays a supporting role in carrying out and promoting the Enterprise Zone to promote regional vitality.

The Estes Valley Astronomical Society (EVAS) in conjunction with The Estes Park Memorial Observatory is offering a free public open house/star night this Saturday, November 26, 2016. The goal of EVAS is to promote amateur astronomy and education in the Estes valley.

Our speaker this month is Tim Gasparrini, the Juno program manager for Lockheed Martin Aerospace who is the builder of the Juno spacecraft. Tim will tell us about the Juno spacecraft and its mission to investigate the unknowns of massive Jupiter.

On Monday, July 4, 2016, after an almost five-year journey to the solar sysJuno spacecraft in Jupiter Orbit tem’s largest planet, NASA’s Juno spacecraft successfully entered Jupiter’s orbit during a 35-minute engine burn.

Juno’s principal goal is to understand the origin and evolution of Jupiter. With its suite of nine science instruments, Juno will investigate the existence of a solid planetary core, map Jupiter’s intense magnetic field, measure the amount of water and ammonia in the deep atmosphere, and observe the planet’s auroras.

The mission also will let us take a giant step forward in our understanding of how giant planets form and the role these titans played in putting together the rest of the solar system.

Mosaic Mirrors Workshop December 10 Aubrey Kinley 9th Grade

Congratulations to Aubrey Kinley the Student of the Week for November 25, 2016.

A school activity that Aubrey enjoys is being a member and the secretary of Fu-

ture Farmers of America (FFA).

Outside of school, she likes to ride her horse and works at a Christian guest ranch as a junior wrangler in the summer months. She also enjoys hunting and fishing and she teaches Sunday School at her church.

Aubrey maintains a 3.5 GPA. Her favorite quote is, “For I know the plans I have for you, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future” from the Bible, Jeremiah 29:11.

Aubrey loves this quote because it reminds her of God’s forever love for her and others.

After high school, Aubrey hopes to become an equine manager or ranch manager and wants to start her own cattle ranch in Wyoming.

She loves working with animals and also enjoys working and designing houses with her dad.

Estes Park Salud Foundation Launches Fundraising For Dental, Medical Equipment

Does anyone like going to the dentist?

The patients at the Estes Park Salud Family Health Center certainly do. To meet the demand for appointments with Marie Welton, D.D.S. and her staff, the health center recently added a second exam room.

The Estes Park Salud Foundation is now raising funds to equip the new space. In addition to dental furniture and equipment, the non-profit foundation is also asking for donations to cover the cost of an ultrasound unit for the medical area.

The recently-expanded health center serves patients on Medicaid, Medicare, Child Health Plan Plus and many private insurance plans. Salud focuses on low-income, medically underserved populations as well as the migrant population.

Fees for medical, dental, behavioral health and pharmacy services are assessed on a sliding scale based on family size and income. One of 12 health centers in the network, the Estes Park Salud Health Center scheduled nearly 10,000 patient visits last year and is open 44 hours each week.

“The purpose of the Estes Park Salud Foundation is to support the health center with fundraising and education,” said Jack Boatman, board vice-president. “We have taken on this $90,000 campaign so that our dental and medical patients have access to state-of-the-art equipment and

enhanced services.”

“AND BE THANKFUL IN EVERY CIRCUMSTANCE” It was gratitude that prompted an old man to visit an old broken pier on the eastern seacoast of Florida. Every Friday night, until his death in 1973, he would return, walking slowly and slightly stooped with a large bucket of shrimp. The seagulls would flock to this old man, and he would feed them from his bucket.

Many years before, in October, 1942, Captain Eddie Rickenbacker was on a mission in a B-17 to deliver an important message to General Douglas MacArthur in New Guinea. But an unexpected detour which would hurl Captain Eddie into the most harrowing adventure of his life. Somewhere over the South Pacific the Flying Fortress became lost beyond the reach of radio. Fuel ran dangerously low, so the men abandoned their plane for the ocean.

For nearly a month Captain Eddie and his companions would fight the water, the weather, and the scorching sun. They spent many sleepless nights recoiling as giant sharks circled and rammed their rafts. But of all their enemies at sea, one proved most formidable – starvation. After eight days their rations were gone or destroyed by the salt water. It would take a miracle to save them…and such occurred. Captain Rickenbacker loved to tell the story. “Something landed on my head. I knew that it was a seagull. I don’t know how I knew, I just knew, and so did everyone else. Not one word was said, but without moving my head, I could see the expressions on their faces. They were staring at that gill. The gull meant food, if I could catch it.” Captain Eddie caught the gull. They consumed most of it, and the rest was used for bait to catch fish. The survivors were sustained and their hopes renewed because a lone sea gull, uncharacteristically hundreds of miles from land, became a sacrifice.

Captain Eddy never forgot…and every Friday evening, about sunset, he would visit that pier to remember the seagull, which long ago, gave itself without a struggle.

During this year we may feel much like Captain Eddie and his crew in those bleak days before the gull landed. Our year has been tumultuous with a hostile and stressful presidential campaign and election, and now the uncertainties of a new administration and what will be ushered in. As we witness all the challenges that our nation is facing in regard to jobs, race relations, international and immigration and other uncertainties, we need to realize that this is not a totally unique time in history. Paul Harvey, years ago, spoke this truth: “In times like this we need to know that there have always been times like these!” Ask John Bradford and the early pilgrims who lost half of their people, but, similar to what we have done this week, got together to celebrate ‘Thanksgiving Day’. Ask those in General Washington’s day, who were recently embroiled in a very difficult battle for our nation’s independence, who realized they needed to show gratitude to God on that day in November. There are countless other times like these, and when people looked to God in prayer and ‘thanksgiving’, they have come out winners. I’m confident that we will too. “In everything give thanks for this is the will of God for you!”

The 1st Annual Estes Park FFA Member Auction is being held next Tuesday,

Special Pets Need Forever Homes For The Holidays

Kramer is an eight year old, handsome kitty. He is super loving and fun, playful and snuggly! He must go to a home with another cat friend.

Mama Cat is a 10 year old, long hair gray cat. Mama lived in a quarry for most of her life and the Pet Association wants to find her a nice home so she doesn’t need to brave the winters anymore. Mama would do best as an only pet as dogs and other cats make her a little nervous.

Also, there are three adorable kittens available to adopt, Lucy, Violet and Charlie. They are nice kitties, between nine and 13 weeks old.

Loren and Diane Shriver 2513 Nimbus Drive Loren and Diane came to Estes Park after retirement five years ago. They sought a small community, four seasons and outdoor mountain activities and Estes Park was a perfect fit.

Stan and Kathye Osborne 616 Longs Drive The Osbornes arrived in Estes Park in March 2016, from Lubbock, TX. Stan’s sister and husband live here and the Osbornes enjoyed coming for a family reunion in 1998. While here they shopped and enjoyed the scenery but never thought they’d retire in what they thought was just a “t-shirt town.”

In the summer of 2015 they rented a cabin here thinking their adult children might visit from Texas if they were here in the mountains. Their ploy worked and now they realize the hiking, sight-seeing, river walking and local town flavor has charmed them all! Estes Park offers so much more than they had previously thought and soon the couple were looking at real estate.

Their 4,500 square foot stucco ranch home was built in 2012 by James and Kristine Poppitz. Their home has a great room with a beautiful view of Twin Sisters and the fourteen foot ceilings make the space feel large. The great room also has a gorgeous stone fireplace with impressive mantles. A grand piano in the room is played by Stan, and Kathye often accompanies him on her flute. The home has ample windows but with an extensive art collection, there is also space for their special works of art. A wrap around granite bar in the kitchen area offers a place for guests to sit and chat while the cook attends to the kitchen.

Deer have been a favorite part of the couple’s holiday decor for years and you’ll find them throughout the house as well as on their Christmas dishes.

Kathye has a penchant for plaid, hence the plaid ribbons you’ll see woven across the mantle and tucked into branches of their lovely Christmas tree.

Their downstairs tree is more casual and harbors their grown children’s ornaments from their elementary school years.

Mary Darracott 609 Park River Place Mary moved to Estes Park in 1991 from San Diego, CA. Her 1,700 square foot home was built in 2005 by Rich Willy. It is a split level, with a short set of stairs going to the main level and down to the lower level. She has a lovely granite fireplace in the living room and hardwood floors in the kitchen/dining room and guest bath.

Mary is an artist and her studio is located in the garage. You’ll enjoy seeing her beautiful portrait and abstract paintings throughout her warm, cozy home. Every piece of furniture Mary has in her home was purchased on Craig’s List.

Mary’s home is decorated for the holidays with a solstice winter look in contemporary colors, white, silver and gold.

Mary enjoys seeing the wildlife roaming through her neighborhood, especially the bears and elk.

Debbie Burgess Richardson 1820 High Pine Drive After spending summers in Estes Park, Debbie’s family moved here when she was five years old so her Dad could help her grandmother run the Old Plantation Restaurant. Her parents started coming to Estes in the early 1930s. Her mom was a summer resident and her dad grew up here and graduated from EPHS in 1941.

Debbie attended school here K-12 and she taught school at the elementary school froom 2003 until her retirement in May of 2016.

Debbie’s home is a factory built home, built in 2008 at All American Homes in Milliken. It was brought to Estes in five pieces.

She designed her home which is 2,200 square feet and has an open concept. The home has three bedrooms and 2 1/2 baths.

Debbie’s home is great for family get-togethers and a great place for her to share her family antiques and keepsakes. Her home has antique furniture, glassware, books, toys and photos and two paintings painted by her great, great grandfather. Debbie has an Estes Park room full of Estes Park memorabilia. Many of the decorations in her home belonged to her parents and grandparents. Her mom collected Santas and nutcrackers and she has several of these. Debbie loves snowmen and gingerbread men and these decorations are in her kitchen and dining areas.

Michael Young Celebrates 9th Year Designing Catch The Glow Parade The 28th Annual "Catch the Glow" Parade will brighten downtown Estes Park this Friday, Nov. 25 (the day after Thanksgiving) starting at 5:30 p.m.

Estes Park is lucky to have as Parade Director for the ninth year in a row, the multi-talented and very creative Michael Young at the helm.

Michael and his crew started working on the floats in Barn W out at the fairgrounds mid-Sept. and according to Michael, there are seven new floats this year and his favorites are,“Feliz Navidad,” “Heart of Christmas,” “Rustic Christmas,” and the “Nutcrackers.”

Michael said, “Every year, this parade gets more exciting to me. Each parade is better than the year before. The weather has been great this fall, and conditions have been pleasant inside Barn W (not the usual cold/snow mix). Putting these floats together has been fun and relaxing, I’ve been putting a lot of love into each and every float!”

Michael pointed to his trusty glue gun and laughed and said, “This $12 glue gun is responsible for everything you’ll see in the parade!”

Rob Hinkle, Fairgrounds and Events Director said, “Michael is amazing, he has put in over 350 hours on these floats. He imagined them, he designed them and now, he’s built them.”

Michael wanted to make sure he thanked his crew of helpers, “Thank you Rob Hinkle, Kevin Benes, Barbara Johnson, David Hocker, Aimee Sawlaw, Devin

Gelsinger and Joe Switzer. “Without this incredible team, I would have nothing to build with. These guys find trailers for the floats to go on, build decks to give me a nice, smooth surface, attach all the pieces, find generators, connect wiring, organize the sponsors and drivers and musicians, find my supplies at the lowest prices, give me constant moral support and are literally the backbone of the parade. I also must thank Shannon DeJaynes who is our volunteer coordinator and all of the big-hearted volunteers who came out to Barn W to help me.

Thanks to all you guys from the bottom of my heart!”

This parade is like no other, a true Estes Park experience! This year, the parade will feature over 40 units including Michael’s 21 floats, marching bands, service vehicles, and much more.

Prior to the parade, beginning at noon this Friday, November 25, children can visit and take photos with Santa Claus in the Town Hall Board Room from 12-4 p.m. Whimsical characters and festive carolers will entertain throughout the downtown area all afternoon.

Then, at 5:30 p.m., the Catch the Glow Parade will come rolling down Elkhorn Avenue featuring thousands of tiny twinkling lights, storybook figures, nutcrackers, snowmen, marching bands, entertainers, wildlife characters and Santa Claus himself. After that, we’ll all look to each other and say, “Michael has created the magic of Christmas once again!”

Yes! Online Giving Is Safe & Online gifts to America’s nonprofits are growing faster than other types of donations according to recent studies completed by The Chronicle of Philanthropy. If you have yet to venture onto the web to make a donation to your favorite charity, you may want to schedule a seat for an informative seminar, “How to Make Donations Online – the Safe & Easy Way,” offered on Tuesday, November 29 at Noon in the Library’s computer lab.

This class will highlight the ins and outs of online giving including how to give (including local nonprofits,) how to participate in Colorado Gives Day and other “giving days,” why people give online, and illustrate how online giving is safe and efficient.

The Chronicle of Philanthropy reported that in 2014, online donations grew by 13%. Why the surge? For starters, the whole point of online giving is simplicity and efficiency for the donor. A few clicks from the comfort of an electronic device is much easier than writing a check, finding the correct address, preparing an envelope, paying for a stamp and physically driving to the mailbox.

Many people say they like online giving because it’s located where they are – in front of the computer. Paying bills online has become common practice, reviewing financial account information online is now considered an essential safety habit, and Business Wire reported that more than half of shoppers will conduct the majority of their holiday shopping online.

For those who are ecology minded, online giving saves trees and is extremely cost-effective for charities. While it can cost $1.25 to raise a dollar from a new donor through direct mail and more than 63 cents through telemarketing, the cost per dollar of raising money online can be as little as five cents. That means that your dollar, sent online to your favorite charity, creates more useable funds for the cause you want to support.

What’s Happening At The Estes Valley Library Estes Valley Library Closed for Thanksgiving and Friday, November 25 The Estes Valley Library will be closed all day on Thursday, November 24 and Friday, November 25 for the Thanksgiving Holiday. The Library will be open regular hours on Saturday, November 26 from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m.

Polar Express Trolley Ride Join us this holiday season for our signature event, Polar Express Trolley Ride.

The rides will take place on Friday, December 9 and Saturday, December 10 at 5:45 and 6:20 p.m. each day and will include the trolley ride, storytelling, and cookie decorating with hot chocolate.

As Thanksgiving approaches, our thoughts and memories become flush with the remembrance of family, friends and food. Year after year we always bring together much the same people in a warm home filled with the familiar smell of pecan pie, mashed potatoes, stuffing and other humid aromas we only seem to conjure once a year.

Somehow we always manage to make thanksgiving day the same. Sometimes the people change; elders pass and new babies arrive. Sometimes the locations change but we always re-create the scene. Thanksgiving is like a genetic trait; handed down from generation to generation perhaps because the story of Thanksgiving's creation as a holiday is itself inspirational. Thanksgiving was brought into being largely through the determination of one woman, Sarah Hale. Hale undertook a 17-year letter writing campaign to make Thanksgiving a national holiday observed in all states.

Before Hale, Thanksgiving was not a fixed holiday but rather an informal tradition. Presidents would select a day and make it known that it would be a day of thanksgiving and community.

Hale lobbied five separate presidents for a set date until finally her request was granted by President Abraham Lincoln.

Lincoln congratulated her tenacity and immortalized the holiday as part of American culture.

Last Tuesday afternoon, November 15, thirty people attended a “Citizenship Information Workshop” hosted by the Estes Valley Library. This workshop was for prospective citizens and for those in our community interested in understanding the naturalization process.

Andrew Lambrecht, Field Office Director of the USCIS Denver Field Office (United States Citizenship and Immigration Services), described in detail the general eligibility requirements, the application process, what to expect during the interview with the USCIS, and the oath ceremony for those who successfully interview. In addition to the oath ceremonies typically held in the Denver area, there is an oath ceremony held every August in Rocky Mountain National Park.

Following this event, several participants registered for citizenship classes, which the Estes Valley Library will offer beginning on January 9, 2017. On The Links What a beautiful fall we have had. Sadly, winter is rapidly approaching. With the closing of the 18 hole October 31st, golfers have had many great days at the nine hole course! The nine hole course is in excellent shape considering it is the middle of November. Our maintenance department had done a great job getting the course ready for winter golf and repairing the elk damage daily.

The nine hole pro shop is open 8:00 a.m. to noon daily and with good weather we are staying open past 3:00 p.m. The winter green fee is only $8.00 and we were able to house eight electric carts for use this winter. Tee times are not needed so come by and enjoy a quick nine hole on the next nice day.

Oratorio Society’s Christmas Concert Dec. 2 & 3

In the second chapter of Matthew the father of a newborn son is visited by an angel in a dream. “Get up,” he said, “take the child and his mother and escape to Egypt. Stay there until I tell you, for Herod is going to search for the child to kill him.” The child was Jesus. That flight to Egypt by Joseph, Mary, and the baby Jesus is the story told by French composer Hector Berlioz in his composition “L’enfance du Christ,” (The Childhood of Christ).

Parts 2 and 3 of the Berlioz three-part cantata “The Childhood of Christ” will be performed by the Oratorio Society of Estes Park at its holiday concert Dec. 2nd and 3rd. Also on the program are “The Mother Goose Suite” by Maurice Ravel and two movements from Marc-Antoine Charpentier’s “Midnight Mass for Christmas.” The concert will be performed on Friday, Dec. 2nd at 7:00 p.m. and Saturday, Dec. 3rd at 2:00 p.m. in the Auditorium at the Estes Park High School. Admission is free. Donations are gratefully accepted.

The Oratorio Society performed the Berlioz composition four years ago, but with complications. “It was interrupted by a fire,” explained music director Kathy Bowers. “We played the Friday night concert, but the

Fern Lake fire of 2012 roared to life in the middle of the night causing some of our performers to have to evacuate their homes, and the next day’s concert was cancelled. Several of the performers asked if we could perform the work again, so we’re delighted to be able to present this work once again.”

“The Mother Goose Suite” by Ravel illustrates childhood fairytales including

Tom Thumb, a Chinese empress, and Beauty and the Beast. The score features a very colorful orchestra. Ballet Renaissance will join the Oratorio orchestra in making this a memorable musical experience, with Radoslaw Kokoszka appearing as the Beast in the fourth of five movements.

Marc-Antoine Charpentier’s “Midnight Mass for Christmas” is based on popular

French noels. The Oratorio Society will perform the first two movements. “It’s a perfect example of French Baroque music,” said Bowers. “Our program actually allows listeners an opportunity to enjoy French Baroque, Romantic, and Impressionist styles of music all in one concert.”

Some Concerns To The Editor: I am concerned to learn of Karen Nicholson’s termination from EPMC. She is extremely well respected within the Estes Park community, and by the medical and clinical staff who work with her daily as well as being the stabilizing force in their work environment.

As a rural community, we don’t have the medical options available in urban areas without long drives. Due to Karen’s leadership, we have an excellent medical staff that is vested in our community as is Karen herself. A few months ago I was waiting for my appointment for a test that I was very stressed about. As she passed through the waiting area, Karen stopped and asked if there was anything she could get for me and had I been waiting long. I’d bet that most other VPs of Physician Services don’t take time for

that.

I’m a taxpayer and I don’t want a management company making decisions that will affect the medical care available to my family and friends. If the board felt an evaluation by a management company was necessary, why would Karen herself not be part of it instead of unexpectedly terminated prior to their arrival? Is there another agenda being pushed forward?

The EPMC staff is dedicated to quality patient care, community outreach, and being there for each other in their ‘work family’. That isn’t something that corporate mentality should interfere with.

Here is another good paying job being taken away from an Estes Park resident.

The way the EPMC staff feel about Karen Nicholson tells me everything I need to know in how effectively she did her job.

Her first musical performance was at age 4 in the children’s choir at church; she participated in plays and musicals during her school years, and has enjoyed singing in various choirs since then. She loves sharing and making music with family members. Melinda’s musical influences range from Appalachian music & bluegrass to classical and religious music.

players in Colorado, Denver’s Johnny Neill has performed as a member of Brad Fitch's TropiCowboy Band since 2006. Neill has been a professional musician for over 40 years and brings an incredible wealth of experience and insight to his performances. He was named the Western Music Association’s Instrumentalist of the Year for 2013.

Neill has also appeared in motion pictures, on television and in the theater where his performances include Louis L’Amour’s classic western “Conagher” (playing the Tumbleweed Waltz which he composed on location), “Every Which Way But Loose,” the epic miniseries “Centennial,” and the world premiere production of “Almost Heaven – The Songs and Stories of John Denver” at the Denver Center for the Performing Arts.

Eamonn Morris is a Boulder, Colorado-based bassist and cellist. Having grown up in a family filled with musicians of all stripes, he has had the opportunity to play professionally since a young age in many different contexts, all while pursuing a full-time academic career.

Morris’s first instrument was the cello, which he has played since the age of eleven, but he found his voice after years of experimenting with it in his teens. He has since played both bass guitar and upright bass in such diverse groups as neosoul band The Mosaic and the avant-

YMCA Breaks Ground On Mountain Center YMCA of the Rockies welcomed generous donors, staff and partners to the ground breaking ceremony of the new Boone Family Mountain Center activity building on Saturday, November 5th. This 10,125square-foot facility will provide a base camp for nature, environmental and high-adventure activities. In addition to housing a hands-on education nature center and two-story climbing wall, the Mountain Center will also serve as the staging and information area for fishing, mountain biking, archery, low-andhigh ropes courses and the zip line.

Julie Watkins, President and CEO of YMCA of the Rockies, is looking forward to the expanded resources the new facility will offer. “The Boone Family Mountain Center will provide a welcoming hub of education and information that inspire families to get outdoors in a fun, safe and respectful way,” she said.

YMCA partners, generous donors, YMCA staff, and representatives of B&E Builders who are constructing the Mountain Center, were invited to take the first dig with golden shovels during the ground breaking ceremony. The YMCA would like to thank those partners unable to attend, including additional donors of the Mountain Center, Basis Architecture and ECOS Communication.

The Boone Family Mountain Center is set to open early winter of 2017 to serve YMCA members, guests and the community.

392 Books Given To EPES Children This was the inaugural year for Plant a Book, Grow a Child, a program envisioned and designed by residents Scott and Brandi Applegate to help put books into the hands of local elementary students who need them the most, funded through a generous donation from Families for Estes. The Scholastic Book Fair was held at Estes Park Elementary School at the end of October, and in addition to the books normally sold during the fair, 392 books were given to 149 children who might not otherwise have been able to have them, at no charge to them.

“While volunteering at the school last year, reading with kiddos who were struggling, I saw the book fair going on, and it just seemed like such a great opportunity for them to get very affordable books” Brandi commented. “But in talking to teachers, a few mentioned that many times, the students who probably need books the most are the ones who don’t end up getting them, for any number of reasons so I knew we should do something about that.” So the idea for Plant a Book, Grow a Child was born.

Scott and Brandi put the program together so that teachers could help identify which students might benefit the most, and could help put the right books into the right hands during the book fair, with no cost to those students. But it was nothing more than a good idea if they couldn’t find a way to fund it. According to Scott, “I approached several potential funding sources locally, but none of them were quite ready or able to pull the trigger. That’s when Families for Estes entered the picture, a local organization that has been actively involved in community efforts to enhance and improve the educational and recreational opportunities for families in Estes Park since 2007. Scott wrote a grant request asking for their help, and they agreed to entirely fund the inaugural year of Plant a Book, Grow a Child with a grant of $2,500. “I just can’t even express how grateful we are to this wonderful organization,” Scott said, “They really came through, and helped make this dream a reality” and helped a whole lot of kids in the process!”

He also pointed out that the program had

no overhead costs, every dollar in the program was used to buy books for elementary school children who needed them. Scott and Brandi are determined to make sure the program continues on an ongoing basis, and Families for Estes has helped them lay the groundwork for that.

According to Heather Gooch, of Families for Estes, “We were able to get approval to put up a large donation jar at the checkout, so people could contribute and help fund the program on an ongoing basis.”

The program needs approximately $2,500 per year to be effective, and approximately $285 was raised for next year from donations to the jar. Reading Corps Could Be Your Answer Colorado Reading Corps is recruiting Elementary Literacy Tutors for Estes Park Elementary. The position is an AmeriCorps position. It is full-time which is 900 hours of service (40+ hours per week). Our service term runs from January 2017 - June 30, 2017. An Elementary Literacy Tutor serves one-onone with students (kindergarten through third grade) who need assistance with learning to read. The tutor will use scripted Reading Corps literacy interventions and conduct assessments to ensure students are on track to read at grade level. Tutors in this position will serve alongside school staff, teachers and coaches, setting tutoring schedules, maintaining consistent tutoring fidelity, and recording the progress of individual students by entering assessment data into an online database. Elementary Literacy Tutors will make every effort along with Colorado Reading Corps program staff to achieve Reading Corps and AmeriCorps requirements. Tutors must maintain confidentiality of all student records and test scores. The Elementary Literacy Tutor must also abide by the code of con-

duct of the school where they are placed.

Tutors are provided with ongoing feedback and coaching from an Internal Coach, Master Coach and Program Coordinator/Manager. This is an AmeriCorps member position. Each member receives $569.50 (before taxes). William Sharp William Frederick Sharp passed away Wednesday, November 16, 2016 at 11:40 p.m. in Midland, MI. A first generation Scottsman, he was born in Garden, MI on June 19, 1936 to Frederick and Margaret Henderson Sharp.

He is survived by his wife June Ochsner Sharp (Midland, MI), his son Andrew Arthur (Midland, MI), daughter inlaw Sylvia Fromherz (Midland, MI), granddaughter Bryn Deana (undergraduate student at the University of Arizona), grandson Andrew William (freshman at Dow High School, Midland, MI) and his sister Margaret Sharp Abels (Rockford, IL). He was predeceased in death by his son William Frederick in 1991.

Bill graduated from the University of Illinois in Champaign-Urbana with BS and MS degrees in Mechanical Engineering in 1959. He was a member of ASHRAE and served as a regional president as well as a committee member in

the national society. In 1972, Bill joined the staff of Arnold and O’Sheridan Consulting Engineers in Madison, WI where he became head of the mechanical engineering division and an owner in the company. In 1992, he joined the staff of Potter Lawson Architects (Madison, WI), heading-up the engineering division.

In addition to his engineering career, Bill was an avid outdoorsman, landscaper and home remodeling enthusiast. Bill will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

Graveside Services will be held Friday, November 25, 2016 at 2:00 p.m. at Nauvoo City Cemetery with Lee Ourth officiating.

In lieu of flowers, donations could be made to the American Heart Association or for Cancer Research.

Glenna Dannels Estes Park resident Glenna Dannels died at home Saturday, November 19, 2016. Mrs. Dannels was a longtime time member of the community, an artist and business woman.

She had been married to former mayor Bernie Dannels for 56 years.

Bernie died in November of 2001. Glenna is survived by Greg Dannels of Estes Park, Bart Dannels of Hampton, VA and John Guse of

One Body One Book Bible Reading 2017 We invite all of the people of Estes Park to read through the Bible in 2017. This initiative is called One Body One Book 2017. All Houses of Worship are invited to do this as a corporate effort or individuals can do it on their own.

In these days and times, the Bible and what people say it says has become quite controversial. I believe it to be a good thing to read it for yourself and you decide what it actually says. Some people, like myself, have tried reading the Bible in the past and gave up. The reasons for giving up included difficult language in an old translation and great difficulty following the story in the traditional, canonical layout of the books of the Bible.

I would like to offer a solution to these problems. You may not be aware of the existence of a Bible that is in chronological order. The chronological Bible helps keeps the various Old Testament kings in order, put most of the Psalms in the historical context, and groups the parables of the New Testament together.

I did my first chronological read through of the Bible in 2015 and found it extremely helpful and enlightening to really understanding what the Bible was trying to say. I have researched the available materials and have found solutions that should meet just about everyone's needs, wants, and desires.

Free Options: Send a request to onebodyonebook2017@gmail.com and you will receive a PDF of the chronological daily readings that start on January 1st. (Requesting this will NOT put you on any kind of email list.) This will allow you to use your existing Bible. However, be prepared to flip a lot of pages starting in about April as 2nd Samuel, Kings, and

Chronicles intermingle. Feel free to send this PDF along to anyone that you think might benefit from it.

For you iPad/Android tablet and smart phone users, there are any number of free options. My personal favorite is www.olivetree.com. The free Bible reader app is quite good and will provide you with a chronological daily reading plan and numerous translations of the Bible, in many languages, are also downloadable for free. The tablet/smartphone even keeps up with your bookmark and this is very helpful to me and you can adjust the font size.

Paid Options: After much research, I selected the Chronological One Year Bible by Tyndale. The ISBN is 978-1-4143-1407-5.

This particular Bible was selected because it has very limited study notes so it does not try to influence your thinking.

It includes a great listing of the dates of the events and books and some very useful reference materials including a cross reference by page number of where any verse can be located in this chronological Bible. In hardcopy; it is available in the New Living Translation, New International Version, and New King James Version. These versions are also available in ebook format along with King James Version and The Living Bible.

Consider becoming part of the One Body One Book 2017 initiative and read the whole Bible in chronological order in 2017. Aided by the chronological layout, a modern English translation or your native language, and perhaps your tablet, you will find that the Bible changes from a dusty old book that Gramma read to an exciting and enlightening page turner that will greatly enhance or even establish your faith. I wish everyone good reading in 2017.

Compensation range is $45,000 - $55,000 depending on qualifications and experience, plus benefits.
