Power Outage December 4-5 In Stanley Avenue And Prospect Avenue Area Estes Park Light & Power will move an existing power line underground in the Stanley Avenue and Prospect Avenue area, resulting in an outage Dec. 4 at approximately 8 p.m. through Dec. 5 at approximately 2 a.m. The outage will allow crews to safely transfer the existing overhead three-phase line to a new, underground threephase line. Areas affected by the outage will include parts of Aspen Avenue, Birch Avenue, Columbine Avenue, Driftwood Avenue, Prospect Avenue, High Street, Fir Avenue, Moccasin Circle Drive, Ouray Drive, Parkview Lane, Stanley Circle Drive, Peck Lane, Highland Lane, Weston Lane, and the 100 to 700 blocks of North St. Vrain Avenue.

Town Offices Closed November 22 For Thanksgiving The Town of Estes Park municipal offices will be closed Thursday, Nov. 22 for the Thanksgiving holiday. Offices will reopen with normal operating hours Friday, Nov. 23.

Larimer County To Host Public Open House On Proposed Fee Adjustments In Estes Park November 20 Larimer County Department of Natural Resources invites members of the public to offer their feedback on proposed adjustments to fees for Larimer County parks and open spaces.

People can offer feedback at the following open house in Estes Park, Colo. : Fee Study Public Open House Tuesday, Nov. 20, 5:30-7:30 p.m.

Town Hall in the Board Room 170 MacGregor Ave., Estes Park Earlier this year, the Department of Natural Resources hired a consultant to conduct a fee study for Larimer County’s parks and open spaces. Many of the park and open space fees have not been adjusted for more than a decade.

The consultant has developed preliminary recommendations for adjustments to fees for daily permits, along with fees for camping and annual permits.

“The department is funded primarily through a sales tax and user fees, ” said Natural Resources Director Gary Buffington, “and we have a responsibility to maintain financial stability.”

The fee study is also evaluating a potential fee for the Devil’s Backbone Trailhead, which is the south entrance to Devil’s Backbone Open Space, located off U. S. 34 west of Loveland. This trailhead has had no charge to the public historically. A fee is charged at the Blue Sky Trailhead, which is the north entrance to Devil’s Backbone Open Space, located off County Road 38E west of

Fort Collins. The department also charges entrance fees for Horsetooth Mountain Open Space and Hermit Park Open Space, which are the two other intensively managed open spaces in Larimer County’s system.

“Devil’s Backbone Trailhead is currently the only intensively managed location in Larimer County’s park and open space system where we do not collect a fee,” Buffington said.

People can get more details on the fee study and offer feedback to Natural Resources staff at the open house on Nov. 20 in Estes Park. An initial open house was held at the Larimer County Loveland Campus on Oct. 22, and a second open house takes place today, Nov. 7, from 5:30-7:30 p. m. in the Hearing Room at the Larimer County Courthouse Offices, 200 W. Oak St. in Fort Collins.

Tree-Lighting Ceremony This Saturday At George Hix Riverside Plaza Donate to Blue Santa to support community members in need The Town of Estes Park’s Tree-Lighting festivities will take place beginning at 3:30 p.m., this Saturday, Nov. 17 in George Hix Riverside Plaza. The Estes Park Elementary Rocky Mountain Echoes Choir will hold a special performance at 5:15 p.m., then Mayor Todd Jirsa will perform the official lighting of the tree promptly at 5:30 p.m.

The community is invited to come enjoy live music, cookies, hot chocolate, costumed characters, crafts, and a visit with Santa.

The Town of Estes Park is seeking nonprofit organizations to contribute to the fun by handing out hot chocolate or treats to attendees. Any interested groups should contact David Hocker at 970-577-3905

Special trolley service available on parade day The annual Catch the Glow Parade will light up downtown Estes Park beginning at 5:30 p.m. the day after Thanksgiving, Friday, Nov. 23. At 5 p.m. the Estes Park Police Department will close Elkhorn

Manford Avenues to Community Drive, U.S. 36 to Mall Road, U.S. 34/Big Thompson Avenue, and Wonderview Avenue. Wonderview Avenue will serve as an alternative route to downtown for eastbound traffic on U.S. 34 and westbound traffic from U.S. 36.

The Elkhorn Express trolley will provide free service from 12 p.m. until 8 p.m. starting at the Estes Park Visitor Center to stops along Elkhorn Avenue (Bond Park at Virginia Dr., The Ore Cart Rock Shop, West Park Center, The Grubsteak Restaurant, The Trading Post, and Bond Park – West side). This loop takes about 25 minutes during normal traffic. The trolley will suspend

Avenue and the remainder of the parade route. The parade route will begin at the West Park Center (400-block of West Elkhorn Avenue) and travel east on Elkhorn Avenue. The parade will turn right at the U.S. 36/U.S. 34 intersection, traveling to Colorado Hwy. 7 and continuing to the Fourth Street entrance of the Fairgrounds at Stanley Park, where the route ends. service at 4:15 p.m. to join the floats until the end of the parade. Residents and guests are encouraged to use the new parking structure at the Visitor Center (691 N. St. Vrain Ave.) and ride the trolley to activities in downtown Estes Park.

A second shuttle will operate from the Fairgrounds Park-n-Ride at 1209 Manford Ave. to stops at the Estes Park Visitor Center and Bond Park at Virginia Downtown loading zones will be closed the night of Nov. 22 in preparation for the parade. Additional parking spaces in the municipal parking lot adjacent to Elkhorn Avenue and the library will be designated Accessible Parking only for parade day.

Side streets along the parade route remain open during the parade, but access to the parade route will be prohibited

until the parade passes and pedestrians are clear of the roadway. Motorists will not be able to leave parking lots along the parade route until the parade has passed. To bypass the downtown area, motorists may use alternate routes including the Moccasin bypass, Graves or

Drive as an overflow parking express. The second shuttle will operate from 3:30 p.m. until 8 p.m.

Gardner, Jirsa Praised For Five Years Mountain Strong Resiliency that makes Estes Park Tourism Successful Colorado Senator Cory Gardner and Estes Park Mayor and Visit Estes Park Board Member Todd Jirsa addressed a crowd of local residents and business owners at Elkins Distilling Co. on Thursday, November 8th to honor “5 years mountain strong” and the resulting vibrant tourist seasons.

Visit Estes Park Interim CEO Shannon Davis organized the event to recognize the “historic effort and cooperation of Estes Park residents and business owners that brought this awesome town back to a point where tourism and hospitality are firing on all cylinders, making it possible to win awards like Sunset Magazine’s Best Mountain Town and to earn a place on Expedia’s Top-Rated Vacation Destinations in North America.”

Following welcoming comments by Davis, which expanded on the significance of earning a position on Expedia’s “top-rated” list – designations are awarded based on aggregated user reviews – Mayor Jirsa remarked on the fortitude and resiliency of the Estes Park community, the good work Visit Estes

Park is doing, and thanked Senator Gardner for his support during that trying time.

“Just a few weeks ago, I brought my parents here on their wedding anniversary,” said Gardner. “It’s just the best place to get away from it all.” An enthusiastic Senator Gardner then expressed his admiration for the community and pride in the awards the town has earned as well as the monumental rebuild of Fish Creek, which he said provided a blueprint for others across the country for how to tackle such a project.

After his remarks, he spoke informally about his desire to address the National Park Service's maintenance backlog and his sincere appreciation for how Estes Park drives tourism and a uniquely Colorado experience for our visitors.

The gathering occurred on the heels of President Trump firing U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions, encouraging a handful of protesters to attend with signs saying “Save Our Democracy: Protect Mueller!” To his credit, Senator Gardner immediately engaged them in conversation, as he did nearly every member of crowd.

Rock Scaling Will Require One-Lane Closures & Delays On CO Hwy. 7 New work began Monday, continues during the work week for 2 to 3 weeks Crews from Flatiron Constructors and the Colorado Department of Transportation began rock-scaling on Colorado Highway 7, a means of loosening debris to minimize highway obstructions. Motorists can expect a one-lane closure with anticipated hold times of up to 20-minutes starting last Monday.

If emergency circumstances arise, the hold times could increase to provide safe public travel.

Laborers, harnessed and suspended by ropes, will dislodge any potentially unstable material in a controlled manner from side slopes for two miles north of Lily Lake while rock-scaling occurs. The activity is expected to take approximately two to three weeks.

CO 7’s resurfacing project began in early May and will take a winter break the first part of December. To date, pipe culverts and side drains have been installed throughout the 12-mile construction zone. Excavation to widen the road with the goal of safety and adding space for additional bikes lanes also has been a focus of this 2018 first-phase of construction.

In-town work started after Labor Day and has comprised of curb, gutter and sidewalk enhancements to better accommodate persons with disabilities.

For the next month, crews will continue to finalize items, such as patching pot-

holes in preparation for winter.

Efforts to restore the integrity of CO 7 after heavy truck traffic damaged the road in association with the 2013 flood will resume in the spring of 2019. Final project completion is slated for September 2019.

The charge(s) are merely an accusation and the defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.

On November 5 at 1:54 p.m. police issued a citation to a 55 year old male from Broomfield, CO for a violation against the wildlife protection ordinance in the 400 block of Fall River Lane.

On November 6 at 1:31 p.m. at 170 MacGregor Ave. a 19 year old male from Estes Park who was wanted on two warrants turned himself in at the EPPD. The

warrants were for failure to appear on a traffic offense from EPPD and a warrant for burglary in Boulder County. The male posted bond for both warrants and was later released.

On November 8 at 1:53 p.m. police arrested a 36 year old female in the 1900 block of Ptarmigan Trail and charged her with theft and crimes against an atrisk adult. The victim was 90 years old.

The female was transported to the Larimer County Jail.

EVFPD firefighters generally respond to medical calls in their personal vehicles, allowing for a faster response. On other incidents, firefighters respond to a fire station to respond in department apparatus with specialized equipment.

Revive Civility: Our Democracy Depends On It By: Jean McGuire

We have come through one of the most toxic election cycles in memory. The outcome is known and some are elated, some are disappointed, and some are just glad it is over. No matter how we feel, we need to challenge ourselves to make the difficult shift of renewed commitment to each other for the valuable work we must do as citizens of Estes Park, the State of Colorado, and the United States of America.

Many in our nation are losing faith in the foundations of our democracy. Our incivility and volatile tribalism have been long in the making; change will not happen overnight. Everyone, however, seems to be waiting for someone else to help start the change. But we are the ones we’ve been waiting for. Restoring respect and reason to our public dialogue will take all of us – each of us.

Toxic, hateful words have consequences.

We can all do better; we need to hold each other accountable when we fall short.

Where do we begin?

Let’s first take a step back, take a deep breath, and seek to restore ourselves.

Then we can come together as a com-

munity to ponder our next steps.

Consider starting at home: • Engage in conversation with others.

Work to understand different points of view - with curiosity, not hostility.

• Allow others the opportunity to fully make their point. Don’t interrupt.

• Work to engage more diverse voices.

And, then reach out to others in our community: • Meet with your local elected officials.

Each and every one. Express your dismay at the current toxic climate but also provide solutions.

• Offer to serve on community committees to provide a well-reasoned point of view while modeling civil, respectful behavior. Voice your opinion without derogatory comments about others.

As a trusted institution of civility and fairness, the League of Women Voters is committed to our mission to make a difference in our communities by protecting our democracy and empowering our voters. We are committed more than ever to educate and to help rebuild trust in our institutions, just as we’ve been doing for nearly 100 years. Please join us in reviving civility. Wildlife Photographer Weldon Lee To Be Featured At The Art Center Of EP Weldon Lee, one of America’s top wildlife photographers, has an exhibition showcasing his work scheduled to run November 16 thru December 23, 2018, at the Art Center of Estes Park, located in Estes Park, Colorado, the gateway community to Rocky Mountain National Park.

His show, "Family Portraits: My Wild Brothers & Sisters," will include an opening night reception Friday, November 16, between the hours of 5:00 and 7:00 p. m. Not only will it feature hors d'oeuvres and beverages, Weldon will also be present.

Explaining his place in wildlife photography, Mr. Lee had this to say, "It transports me into the spirit world of my wild brothers and sisters, where I find myself connecting with them and listening to what they have to say."

"My goal in producing a work of photographic art is to create in it, the things I see, hear, and feel when I'm in that magical space. My art," he continues, "is a collaboration between myself and my wild brothers and sisters. This is why I'm drawn to create images out of the ordinary."

Examples of this are found in Mr. Lee's "Mystic World" series, creations inspired by the work of artist, Bev Doolittle. "Not only do images in this series portray my wild brothers and sisters in the spirit world," confides Weldon, "it exposes them communicating with life in our world."

Weldon's latest series that he sometimes refers to as photographic realism with a touch of expressionism actually look more like paintings, than photographs.

According to Mr. Lee, "They have

everything to do with what happens when I look through my camera's viewfinder into the eyes of my subject and feel connected. There are times I can almost sense my subject's inner most thoughts. My newest work portrays, to the best of my ability, those feelings and emotions. For me, it's all about their eyes."

A selection of images from Mr. Lee's "Mystic World" series, along with his newest creations will be featured in his upcoming exhibition.

"Don't worry," Weldon adds, "if you're into the more traditional form of photography, I'll also have a selection of my old standbys on display.

Turkey Trot At YMCA Of The Rockies Join YMCA of the Rockies on Thanksgiving morning, Thursday, November 22nd for the 11th annual 5K Turkey Trot! Audition Preparation Workshop For Students 3rd Grade-High School Outshine the rest! The Fine Arts Guild of the Rockies is excited to offer an Audition Preparation Workshop for students, ages 3rd grade through high school. The three hour workshop includes mock vocal auditions, dance call, feedback on your performance, and Q&A where we invite parents to join us for the last half hour. Information on how to pick the best audition song, how to present yourself, and how to deal with nerves will all be covered, along with other tools to help students prepare for future auditions. Students should prepare one song that can be sung acapella, with a karaoke track, or with an accompanist that will be provided.

Preparation is underway for the 2018 Catch the Glow parade, which will travel along Elkhorn Avenue at 5:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 23, the day after Thanksgiving.

The Town of Estes Park’s Events staff is calling for float entries and recruiting community members to volunteer with Catch the Glow preand post-parade festivities. Local businesses and organizations are encouraged to participate by sponsoring a float. Parade Entry and Float Sponsorship applications are available at www.EPCatchTheGlow.com and should be submitted to the Events office by Nov. 10. For more information, please call 970-586-6104.

Volunteers are needed for Catch the Glow festivities in Bond Park before the parade.

• Volunteer to be a costumed character that strolls along the downtown streets, brings smiles to the faces of children, and visits sponsoring businesses. Costumes are provided and help is needed from noon until 4 p.m.

• Volunteer to be a character on a float during the parade. Enjoy rolling down Elkhorn Avenue on a creative masterpiece and waving to all the guests and local friends!

• Be a part of the glitz and glamour and help with the actual finishing touches on the floats.

Angelita Yeraldi Saenz Olvera 10th Grade Congratulations to Angelita Yeraldi Saenz Olvera for being named the Estes Park News Student of the Week for November 16, 2018.

In school Angelita enjoys being a member of the Spanish Club and Astronomy Club. Angelita has only been in Colorado for a year, after moving here from Mexico. She still does not quite know the English language as much as she’d like to but she tries very hard to learn. When she doesn’t understand something, she asks teachers to help her.

Outside of school she likes to play basketball and soccer. She also likes to listen to music and read but above all, she likes to study English so that she

can learn more and improve every day.

Angelita’s favorite quote is “Always have a positive mind in spite of things not going the way you want.”

After high school she plans to go to college with a positive mind-set and study medicine.

Abraham Lincoln’s coffin was pried open‌twice. The first time was in 1887, twentytwo years after his assassination. Why? Not for forensics to determine if he had died from a bullet fired from the derringer of John Wilkes Booth, but because a rumor was being spread that the coffin was empty. So, a select group of witnesses was on hand to prove that the rumor was totally false, then watched as the casket was resealed with lead. Fourteen years later, the president’s withered body was viewed again—this time by more witnesses. Why? The same grim reason: rumors that the casket was empty had again put doubts in the public’s mind. Pressure mounted and the same ghoulish, grotesque ceremony was carried out, despite the president’s son, Robert’s, protest. Finally the rumors were laid to rest, along with our Civil War president and the president’s remains were sealed in a tomb in Springfield.

Rumors are not only ‘unfair’, but usually ‘cruel’. Lacking facts and proven infor mation, these loosely disseminated rumors do considerable harm. They are spread by busybodies who cater to the sick appetite of petty people. Usually those who feed on rumors are small, suspicious people who find satisfaction in building on ‘suggestions’ that they hear from other people. They find solace in being only an innocent ‘channel’ of the unproven information‌never the ‘source’, the anonymous ‘they’: “They sayâ€? or “I understand from othersâ€?. Thus the ‘spreaders’ feel they have a measure of safety.

You’ve heard them, haven’t you? “I understand that Joe and Mary are divorcing‌ they say that he was unfaithful.â€? “I hear their son is on drugs and that he got picked up for shoplifting.â€? “Someone said they had to get married.â€? “But then, we all know that he was a heavy-drinker.â€? “The word is out – he cheated his way to the top.â€? “It seems to many that he can’t be trusted.â€?

We’ve endured a bombardment of such ‘hearsay’ and ‘they-say’ during our recent political campaigns, to the point that few people can actually know what the truth is. As a result, who can possibly know if we will be having the best-qualified people serving as our leaders in months and years to come. Shakespeare defines our current problem in these words: “Rumor is a pipe, blown by surmises, jealousies, conjectures, and of so easy a stop, that the blunt monster with uncounted heads, the still-discordant wavering multitude can play upon it.� (King Henry IV) Someone has rightly suggested: “The tongue is capable of prying open more caskets, exposing ‘perceived’ skeletons in closets, and stirring up more choking, scandalous dust than any other tool on earth.� This being true, what can we do?

First of all, we need to identify the sources by name. I have a friend who served as a ‘church trouble-shooter’. (Yes, churches do have trouble‌and trouble-makers!). Gordon invites anyone to come to the church office to share their ‘complaints’, ‘gripes’ with him, but, as they enter the room, he says: “Be aware that your comments will be recorded and typed up for you to sign.â€? He says, “It’s amazing how quickly people can exit the room.â€? Secondly, make them support evidence with facts‌not hearsay. Finally, we all need to remember Jesus’ words: “On the judgment day every idle word that a man speaks he will give an account of. By his words, he will be justified, and by his words he will be condemned.â€? We may deceive people‌but not an Almighty, ‘ever-listening’, God. (Bob)

Estes Park Quota Club Foundation Ambulance Fund It is again time to rally together for a new ambulance for Estes Park Health, formerly Estes Park Medical Center, and the Emergency Medical Services Team (EMS). e entire community and all of our visitors count on an ambulance being available when there is a need.

Did you know?

• Five ambulances are in service at all times, answering calls that cover a 1000 square miles. e EMS answer calls from Allenspark, Big Elk Meadows, Estes Park, Glen Haven, Pinewood Springs, and Le Hand Fire District.

• e budget for the ambulance maintenance alone is $52,000.00 annually. Two of the five, ambulances have over 200,000 miles on the odometer.

• 31% of the ambulance calls are for transfer of patients to hospitals out of the Estes Park area.

• e cost of a new fully equipped ambulance will be approximately $230,000.00.

Unlike many places, our ambulances are not supported by tax dollars. e Department of Emergency Services, through Estes Park Health, purchases these ambulances with the help of community funds and money set aside by the medical center for capital purchases. is

Brad Fitch To Sing Tribute To Gordon Lightfoot Concert November 25

Hear Brad Fitch at his firstever Tribute to Gordon Lightfoot, Sunday, Nov. 25 at the Old Gallery in Allenspark. The concert will begin at 7 p.m., and tickets will be available at the door for $10.

Fitch, who is best known for his cowboy singalong concerts and John Denver tribute shows, says that as a songwriter, Lightfoot has been his primary inspiration. “I’ve been listening to Gordon’s music since I started playing guitar as a kid,” Fitch said. “His story-telling, guitar style and song craftsmanship have greatly influenced my own songwriting. This will be the first time I’ve performed a concert of

exclusively his music, and I’m excited to do so.”

Unquestionably Canada's greatest living songwriter, Lightfoot’s music defined the folk-pop-country sound of the 1960s and '70s.

His songs have been recorded by Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Bob Dylan, Eric Clapton, Glen Campbell, Neil Young, Dan Fogelberg, Jimmy Buffett, John Denver, Marty Robbins, Peter, Paul and Mary and countless others.

Lightfoot’s own hit records include “If You Could Read My Mind, ” “Sundown,” “The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald,” “Early Morning Rain” and many more.

Fitch will be joined by Mark Rashid, on lead guitar.

The Old Gallery is a non-profit community center and welcomes the public. Refreshments will be served and attendees are welcome to “BYOB. ”

Colorado Gives Day: Securing The Treasures Of History

Every so often, an extraordinary opportunity comes along: an artifact that preserves a vital part of our community’s history like nothing else could. Sometimes, there is but one fleeting moment to acquire one of these treasures. Case in point: thanks to quick action, the Estes Park Museum Friends & Foundation were recently able to purchase the saddle of the show horse, Gold Tony, who gained fame from the 1940s through the 1960s with his rider, Estes Park’s Ruth Herndon.

Gold Tony achieved star status, not only in local local parades and at the Rooftop Rodeo, but through national touring that included the bright lights of Madison Square Garden. Gold Tony was famous for his tricks that included drinking from a soda bottle and roping his own calf. The Gold Tony Saddle is a unique treasure, beautifully studded with silver and gold ornaments, with tack included.

Builders Club Beautify Tregent Park By: Lydia Pita, Estes Park Middle School Builders Club secretary

This fall, the Town of Estes Park Department of Public Works asked the Estes Park Middle School Builders Club to help them with their latest community service project: repairing and restaining Tregent Park. Tregent Park is a historic park in downtown Estes Park that has recently fallen into disrepair. Jon Landkamer, Facilities Manager for the Town of Estes Park, who is in charge of the project met with the officers and together they set a date and time for the club to repair the park.

The Builders Club is “an international student-led organization providing members with opportunities to perform service, build character and develop leadership.” Members complete many community service projects throughout

the year. The Builders Club feeds into the Key Club, which is based in the High School. The Kiwanis Club sponsors both clubs and even contributed their services to the project. It was truly an intergenerational effort.

The club worked for most of the day on Saturday, October 27, and made significant progress while they were there.

They replaced, sanded and stained the railings that were in desperate need of repairs. "It was really amazing getting to see how much better the park looked after only one day." said Anna Roberts Briggs, student President of Builders Club. The members in attendance worked extremely hard to complete as much of the project as was possible in a day. Some staining work still remains to be done, however, and the remainder of the project might have to be postponed until the spring.

The Museum Friends are seeking help to secure the artifacts of tomorrow. The nonprofit group has set up an Acquisitions Fund to help the Museum take advantage of future opportunities. The public is encouraged to make a tax-deductible donation to the Museum Friends through the convenient portal of Colorado Gives Day. Each donation made will be used to replenish and grow the Fund. This offers a chance to secure artifacts that enter the market, including many items that might never become available again for acquisition.

Colorado Gives Day is Tuesday, December 4. Contributions can now be pre-scheduled, so that any donations are conveniently activated on December 4.

Fundraising For A Statue Of Annie The Elk Many of you may remember the story we did about Lee and Molly Kemper and their beloved Annie the elk. Annie’s story got great attention from our readers back in 2004 when we first ran it. She is a very special elk that has lived with the Kemper’s for many, many years. Annie has been showing her age and unfortunately, elk don’t live forever. Lee and Molly desire to immortilize Annie by way of a bronze statue and they would be obliged if anyone can help them reach their goal to make this happen. Please help with this real life ‘Doctor Dolittle’ story. After nearly 30 years of caring for Annie, Lee Kemper would like to have a life-sized bronze statue to memorialize her before she passes; she is the longest living domesticated elk in the U.S. The statue will be permanently displayed in a public area so Annie and the story of her human caregivers, can be shared and enjoyed. Annie is living comfortably with two of her granddaughters at Keno’s Lama Ranch in Estes Park, CO. Unfortunately, time and arthritis are taking its toll.

The local wildlife authorities found Annie in 1989, and seeked out Lee and Molly Kemper to care for the orphaned five day old elk. The Kempers, retired restaurateurs also had a llama ranch.

Here is how you can help.

A Loveland, Colorado foundry has been selected and a design/bust will be started in January. All funds will go towards the statue and installation. Your help and support will be documented and followed with a website and social media.

During the time Lee was nursing Annie back to health, he also was A taking care of two baby raccoons, t and a two mule deer fawns that had been orphaned as well. The five anib mals m became great friends, interactiing in most unusual ways.

Lee stated, "Our house was so busy, we were always feeding one animal, w aand another was always hungry, w waiting to be fed. I couldn't have breakfast without one of them wantb iing some of my peaches and cream.

For F some reason, this hi little li l calf had gotten separated from her mother and was lost and alone. A passer-by saw the little baby in a field surrounded by coyotes, hoping to make the baby elk their next meal. The good Samaritan was able to get the coyotes away from her and he brought the little spotted calf to Dr. Dill, local veterinarian, for treatment.

Dr. Dill administered treatment on the young elk and then set out to find someone who could feed

and care for this orphaned baby. Rick Dill knew of Lee and Molly's love for animals and asked Lee if he would take care of the abandoned baby. Lee of course, said he would and he named the baby, Annie.

According to Lee, "When I saw Annie, it was love at first sight! I knew I would do whatever I had to do to save this adorable little baby."

Like any young baby, Lee had to feed Annie at all hours of the day and night. He fed her bottles of goat's milk five times per day and throughout the night. Annie bonded with Lee, and saw him as her "mother." Then, one day, Annie suddenly became very ill, she didn't want to b eat e at all and began to lose weight.

Her H health situation quickly became grave. Lee had Dr. Dill come c out o to the ranch and he diagnosed her h with an eating disorder. She could no longer walk around and c had h become extremely weak. He explained to Lee that her organs e had h begun to shut down. Dr. Dill

told Lee the outlook did not look good for Annie and thought she should be put down. Shocked and extremely saddened, Lee took off Annie's bandanna and set it on the counter, thinking this would serve as a remembrance of his little elk friend. The thought of her not being around anymore made Lee very, very sad. Annie was also upset at having "her" bandanna removed so she gathered all of her strength, stood up and walked over to the counter to get her bandanna back!

Lee thought that was a sign that she was

a survivor and he told Dr. Dill, "I've gotta save her, let's do whatever we can."

They started her on IV fluids and medicine to hopefully bring her back. After administering treatment, Dr. Dill said, "We've done all we can do, now we just have to wait and see."

Lee stood watch over little Annie for hours and hours, waiting and wondering if his little friend would live. Lee's wife Molly relieved him of his watch and at midnight, Annie suddenly stood up and began to act like herself again. Molly excitedly reported to a tired and distraught Lee, "Annie is up!"

From that day on, Annie and Lee L were once again inseparable b friends. Lee, who claims elk are a quite the intelligent animals, taught Annie tricks such m aas giving kisses, she comes when w she is called and she can shake s "hands, shake her back leg l and she can even sit up! Her favorite reward for her tricks f are a Mike and Ike candies. Lee says s these are great treats which encourage not only Anw nie, n but his goats who have lived to a ripe age of 20 years l old! o As Annie spent her days at the llama farm, she would gaze at the elk who would frequent the Kemper's yard.

But being so human habituated, there was no way Annie could be safely released into the wild once again.

Then, one day, according to Lee, "This one bull elk, a real beauty, fell in love with Annie and hung around the enclosure all the time. Somehow, either the bull got in or Annie got out and Annie ended up pregnant and she gave birth to a baby two years ago. The new baby was named, Hannah. When Hannah was born, a resident llama at the Kemper ranch, Iryieman, took charge of her and claimed Hannah as his own. He watched over Hannah from her first m moments on earth, he was eeven known to lay down w with the young elk and keep h her warm while Annie ggrazed.

Iryieman was a better m mama than Annie was. He ccame up with his own way to communicate c with both Annie n and Hannah, altering his usual u llama humming noise, to t a sound like an elk call.

The case of Annie and Hann nah is a very unique one indeed. d Normally, she would have h been returned to the wild and been able to join a herd, but their herd is Lee and Molly.

The two elk have bonded so very deeply with Lee and Molly and due to their dependence on them and being so used to humans, it would far too dangerous for Annie or Hannah to return to the wild.

It is a fact that anyone who possess an elk is subject to a steep fine, yet the CDOW has realized this special case and has made an exception.

It is truly a special love story.

Leave A Legacy Campaign Launched

Fifteen Estes Valley nonprofits have joined forces to encourage and facilitate planned giving. The group provides free educational programs, confidential gift planning services, and a website that spells out what assets might be given, how to set it up, and who to talk to in order to make the gift possible.

Leave a Legacy is a one-year campaign push for Estes Valley Legacy. It was announced this last week at the annual National Philanthropy Day event and will run through November 2019. The campaign goal is to secure or uncover 100 planned gifts that benefit Estes Valley nonprofits.

Each organization has chosen a Champion who starts the conversation about planned giving. Champions believe in and support the mission of their organization; they have volunteered to draw attention to the opportunity for residents (and guests) of Estes to make meaning-

ful contributions to local nonprofits. Potential donors who want to talk further about how or what they might give can then speak to the Estes Valley Legacy’s planned giving educator.

Potential gifts include bequests (80% of planned gifts are bequests, which give a certain percentage of one’s estate (or a certain dollar amount) to an organization); life insurance, securities (stocks, mutual funds), retirement assets, and real estate. Some gifts are made upon a person’s death, others can be initiated now.

The Estes Valley Legacy group is donor-centric, they help donors make informed decisions based on their own circumstances and charitable interests.

Conversations with the planned gift educator are confidential and help steer potential donors to the right gift and the right professional to help make it happen.

There are so many charitably minded people who know and love the Estes Valley: young families, families that come here to play, retirees, new to town and fourth generation Estes. Estes Valley Legacy intends to harness the care felt for this place into long-term funding for the educational, health, conservation, family, and recreation services that make our community great.

47th Annual Holiday House Seeking Volunteers & Silent Auction Donors The Elizabeth Guild Thrift Shop and Lizzie’s Boutique is currently preparing to celebrate the 47th annual Holiday House. This is the largest fundraiser of the year for the Estes Park Health Foundation, always held on the Saturday after Thanksgiving at the Ridgeline Hotel (previously Rocky Mountain Park Inn/Holiday Inn). Snowy Peaks Winery Receives Accolades grapes grown in Colorado is the primary driver of the success Colorado wineries have had in creating awardwinning wines. Last week, wineries from across the state came together to celebrate this success at Colorado Uncorked, an event to promote award-winning wines from The Governor’s Cup Competition. The thirteen wines featured at Colorado Uncorked were chosen by a panel of 16 wine experts from across the nation, to represent the best of the state in “The Governor’s Collection”. The competition included 325 wines from 35 local wineries, including twelve from Snowy Peaks Winery. The Snowy Peaks Élevé was one of the wines chosen for the Governor’s Collection, Snowy Peaks Winery has recently received several awards and outstanding reviews in national publications. In October, prominent wine critic James Suckling convened a tasting of 800 wines from 14 states outside of the West Coast for a report called American Wine Revolution. The critics were surprised by the high quality of wines they tasted from these lesser known regions of the U.S. and Colorado was singled out as a leader in quality for their red wines. In all, James Suckling and his team evaluated 47 Colorado wines with the highest score of 92 points awarded to the Élevé, a Rhonestyle blend from Snowy Peaks Winery.

“We are very proud to have the highest score ever from a national publication for a Colorado wine.” says winemaker Erik Mohr. “It’s wonderful to see wines made from grapes grown in Colorado getting recognition outside of our state.” In addition, Sebastian’s Reserve, a Bordeauxstyle blend, received 91 points and the Dry Riesling was awarded 90 points.

The Wine Enthusiast magazine is also taking notice of Colorado wines. In the November edition, they featured 18 Colorado wines in their Buying Guide, including three from Snowy Peaks Winery.

Their Mourvèdre was an Editor’s Choice with 90 points, Sebastian’s Reserve received 89 points and the Syrah was 87 points.

Patient On The Road To Self-Sufficiency With Help From Estes Park Health Home Health Services After a motorcycle accident, Steve Weitz received the care and support he needed to continue his rehabilitation at home.

After a motorcycle accident on Highway 14 near Walden in August 2017, Steve Weitz says, “I could only move the index finger on my left hand and I could barely wiggle my toes on both feet.”

In a single moment, the accident transformed the cheerful musician and singer who imitates Willie Nelson into a quadriplegic. Steve’s spinal cord was bruised and swollen. After a 100-mile air evacuation to UC Health in Loveland, he spent six weeks in the hospital, including three weeks in the intensive care unit.

Then he transferred to Craig Hospital in Englewood for three months of rehabilitation.

After four-and-a-half months of hospital care, Steve was able to barely walk with a walker. It was enough progress for his doctor to release him. His wife, Brenda, who was with him every day of his hospitalization, took him home to Estes Park.

But there was still much work to do.

In addition to physical therapy at Estes Park Health, Steve turned to Estes Park

Emergency Capacity Campaign To Purchase Life-Saving Equipment With over 2,200 calls per year, the Emergency Medical Services Team (EMS) at Estes Park Health ensures that our Estes Valley residents and 4 million+ visitors receive the best service possible in their time of need. Currently, four of the six ambulances in the Emergency Medical Services’ fleet employ cardiac monitors that are very old and obsolete.

Although they still function, EPH will soon be unable to obtain parts or service for them. Estes Park Health Foundation kicked off an Emergency Capacity Campaign in 2018 to upgrade cardiac moni-

The old monitors have been discontinued by the manufacturer and soon will no longer have support options like firmware upgrades, parts, or repairs available.”

So far, Estes Park Health Foundation has received support from Estes Valley Community Fund, Bank of Colorado, and major donors including Tara and Phil Moenning and Brian and Terri Elliot.

November is National Hospice and Home Health Month, and hospice programs across the country are reaching out to help people understand all that hospice offers.

In recent months, a number of notable Americans have died. They include Senator John McCain, the queen of soul Aretha Franklin, and former first lady Barbara Bush. In many media reports, they were described as having “given up” on curative care late in their lives. Ms. Franklin opted for hospice care; Mrs. Bush received what was described as “comfort care.”

Nearly 30 percent of Medicare beneficiaries receive hospice care for seven days or less, a period considered too short to take full advantage of the many services that the hospice interdisciplinary team offers.

Every year, nearly 1.5 million Medicare beneficiaries receive care from hospices in this country. Hospice provides pain management, symptom control, psychosocial support and spiritual care to patients and their family caregivers when a cure is not possible.

Conflict Resolution Month: Next Steps In A Successful Project October was Conflict Resolution Month across Colorado. It was a civility challenge designed to inspire Coloradans to make “deliberate choices in how we solve conflicts constructively.”

Through programs designed by local communities, it had the longer-term goal of making Colorado the most civil state in the union.

One person who championed this project was former State Senator Linda Newell, who facilitated the capstone program of our local series. Of all the projects statewide, it was Estes Park, she said, that set the standard for the most engaging project in Colorado in 2018.

The impact of our local project would not have been possible without the tremendous participation from people all across our valley, as well as our community partners. The popular adage “It takes a village” was true, and our partners provided invaluable support and expertise.

Spanning five programs, 212 people attended and joined in the process of learning how we can have healthier conversations in our community—whether we’re at public meetings or just visiting casually with friends and neighbors.

Circulated through the valley were 240 copies of “Why Won’t You Apologize?: Healing Big Betrayals and Everyday Hurts” by bestselling author Harriet Lerner, which helped provide an excellent thread connecting the series.

Program participants told us of how they valued these programs, and sometimes invited friends and neighbors to join them. An Estes Park couple with two young children attended each of the

five programs. They took turns watching the kids, so that one of them could attend each program. For the final program of the series, they hired a babysitter and both attended.

So where do we go from here? First, all of us who attended programs and/or read the book can take a moment to reflect on what we’ve learned, and consider how we can make our community stronger through healthy dialogue. We can model the civility we’d like to see.

And when we find people on opposing sides of an issue who are talking “at” one another rather than “to” one another, we can lead the way by listening to the opposing viewpoint.

Our Strategic Plan is guided by an important objective: Engage community members in current affairs and decision-making. In that spirit we’ll be building on last month’s efforts with two upcoming programs.

Dr. Martín Carcasson, Director of the Center for Public Deliberation at Colorado State University, will return for Part Two of his session on “Tackling Wicked Problems,” this time to show us how small-group listening sessions can create powerful spheres of collaboration.

And Senator Newell will return for a screening of the film “The Last Bill: a Senator’s Story,” where she and her Senate colleague Kevin Lundberg are shown working across the aisle to bring a bill through the legislature, with fortitude, humor, and genuine bipartisanship.

We thank all of you for your participation, which is making our community stronger through positive civic conversations and deliberative democracy.

Salud Family Health Center Welcomes New Provider-Hannah Fields, MD Estes Park Salud Family Health Centers is excited to welcome a new provider to the practice, Hannah Fields, MD. Dr. Fields grew up in Boulder, Colorado and is excited to be back near her family and the mountains. After studying biochemistry and psychology at the University of Colorado at Boulder, she went on to earn her Medical Doctorate at the Mayo Clinic School of Medicine in Rochester, Minnesota. During medical school she received a scholarship to study abroad at the Universitat Pompeu Fabra in Barcelona, Spain, where she studied and worked in public health with an emphasis on program and policy evaluation. Dr. Fields returned to Colorado for her Residency program in Family Medicine through the University of Colorado and Denver Health.

In addition to her specialty and training in family medicine, Dr. Fields brings to Estes Park her extensive experience in Family Planning and reproductive health, LGBTQ Health, obstetric and prenatal care, and Medication-Assisted Treatment for substance use. She also speaks fluent Spanish, and is proud to provide excellent care to patients of all ages and walks of life. She is passionate about providing whole-person care for patients of all ages, and is excited to be joining the Estes Park Salud clinic which

provides integrated behavioral health and dental services to families. Dr. Fields encourages all of her patients to go out and “live your best life!”

Old Gallery In Allenspark Serves Up Three Great Concerts The Old Gallery in Allenspark is featuring three exciting concerts before the end of the year.

This Saturday will be the final performance of Songwriters in the Round for 2018. It will be curated by Boulder’s award-winning singersongwriter Kyle Donovan.

Donovan will be joined by three other notable singer- songwriters: Antonio Lopez, Jessica Eppler and Meredith Wilder. They will take turns playing their original songs and the stories behind them, similar to the famed Bluebird in Nashville.

This year Donovan was a finalist in the Troubadour Contest at Telluride Bluegrass Festival, Falcon Ridge Folk Festival and Wildflower! Arts & Music Festival, His forthcoming album has already won critical acclaim from folk festivals and competitions across the nation.

Jessica Eppler is a longtime favorite in Longmont, performing a mix of darkly poetic, R & Binspired rock. Her powerful, evocative songwriting and tireless music-community support have made Jessica and her music a mainstay in the Longmont music scene.

He is so positive and his voice so powerful,” said The Old Gallery volunteer Steve Weaver. “We’ve seen him perform this holiday show in the past and it’s terrific. EVICS Thanks Community For Art Gala Support Once Upon a Time….a small village came together to celebrate local art and support young children, families, and early childhood education! Thank you to all who came out to support EVICS’ 3rd Annual Art Gala Fundraising event held on November 9th at the Trout Haven Event Center. Throughout the evening, guests enjoyed colorful art created by our youngest community members, and the many truly unique pieces contributed by talented local artists. The EVICS Giving Tree gave guests the opportunity to support specific program needs, such as childcare scholarships, professional development materials, preschool music classes, and supplies for home visits.

The event raised $10,000 to support EVICS on-going programs, and generated additional gifts to support EVICS’ move to become a Family Resource Center. EVICS has moved to a new home at 1182 Graves Ave, Unit A, and is pursuing membership in the Colorado Family Resource Center Association. After one year of membership, EVICS will be eligible for critical pass through funding which will provide more sustainable support for the program.
