Fatality In Lumpy Ridge Area Of Rocky Mountain National Park Last Sunday morning, recovery efforts took place for a man who fell approximately 50 feet Saturday afternoon September 30, while technical climbing on the Batman and Robin route on Batman Pinnacle in the Lumpy Ridge area of Rocky Mountain National Park. Bystanders performed Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) until rangers arrived. They performed additional Advanced Life Support and the man was pronounced dead at the scene.

The man has been identified as Henry Gholz (66) from Fort Collins, Colorado.

As is standard for all fatalities that occur in Rocky Mountain National Park, an investigation is ongoing. The man’s body was recovered by a long line helicopter operation Sunday morning at 8:45 a.m. and transferred to the Larimer County Coroner’s Office.

US 34 Closed Between Loveland And Estes Park Winter closure brings flood recovery efforts into the home stretch The section of US 34 between Loveland and Estes Park closed on Monday, Oct. 2, and will remain closed until late May 2018 for extensive work to make the Big Thompson Canyon more resilient to the impacts of flooding.

This work, taking place from just east of Mall Road (mile point 66) to the Dam Store (mile point 83), includes reconstructing several miles of the highway by removing material from beneath the roadway and combining it with a cement mixture to create man-made bedrock. During this closure, crews will also rebuild several access bridges, repair the road near the landslide at Waltonia (mile points 72 to 74), realign the highway where possible to shift the road onto bedrock, improve the river embankment slopes to offer more protection to the roadway and complete the new bridges through the Horseshoe curve (mile point 78) where construction took place this summer.

The initial closure is from approximately mile point 72 to mile point 80 (near the Round Mountain Trailhead/Cedar Cove area). Single lane closures will be in place between mile point 80 and mile point 83 (the Dam Store). In mid-October, the closure limits will extend further east to mile point 83 and in early November, the closure will extend further west to approximately mile point 67. Until that time, the western and eastern ends of the canyon will remain open to all traffic.

During this winter closure, there will be several work zones spread out over about 12 miles of US 34. Permits have been distributed to canyon residents and property owners for travel along US 34 at certain times each day. Work to repair the road near the landslide between mile points 72 and 74, however,

requires fully closing this section of US 34 for several months with no access, even during allowed travel times.

Canyon residents traveling west into Estes Park will need to use County Road 43 during this time.

As with last winter’s closure of the Big Thompson Canyon, anyone living outside the permit boundary areas in the canyon will need to use the US 36, State Highway 66 and Highway 287 detour

route to travel between Loveland and Estes Park.

Project background: US 34 Big Thompson Canyon’s roads and bridges were heavily damaged during the 2013 floods with many homes damaged and over 100 air lifted evacuations. The canyon and its residents also suffered from flooding in 1976. As a result of these two events, CDOT studied the hydraulic flow of the river in the canyon and its impact on the road and bridges along its path while looking for safety improvements and resiliency solutions to prevent/protect against future flood events.

Town Encourages Public Participation In Budget Process The Estes Park Town Board will review the proposed 2018 Town budget during study sessions and public hearings in October and November. Study sessions are scheduled for Fridays Oct. 13 and 20 and will take place 8:30 a.m. until 12 p.m. in the Town Board Room of Town Hall, 170 MacGregor Avenue. Public hearings on the budget take place during the Nov. 14 and 28 Town Board meetings with final adoption anticipated on Nov 28. The public is encouraged to attend and comment at these public hearings, which take place at 7 p.m. in the Town Board Room.

Each October study session will include presentations on different funds within the Town government. The Oct. 13 study session will focus on General budget matters, Employment Compensation and Benefits, Transfers, Medical, Fleet, Information Systems (IT), Vehicle Replacement, General Fund Revenues, Executive, Legislative, Administrative Services, Employee Benefits, Judicial, Finance, Community Development, Police, Light and Power Fund, and Water Fund. The Oct. 20 study session will focus on Com-

munity Service Grants, Cultural Services including Senior Center and Museum, Community Services including Visitor Center, Events (including the Multi- Purpose Event Center), Transportation, Facilities, Engineering, Streets, Trails Fund, Parks, Open Space Fund, Conservation Trust Fund, Community Recreation/Senior Center Fund, and the Community Reinvestment Fund.

Each year, the process begins with creating a budget schedule early in the year, usually March or April. Next, departments review their budgets and potential needs for the following year. The departments then meet with the Town Administrator and Finance Director to begin assessing their needs. Strategic planning meetings are held in June with the Mayor and Board of Trustees to determine priorities and give guidance in budget preparation. The Finance Director, working with the Town Administrator, then crafts the draft budget to be reviewed with the Town Board during the October budget study sessions. After the budget is approved in November, it is printed and submitted to the State of Colorado by the end of January.

Highway 7 Water Utility Project Road Repairs Begin October 9 Final asphalt surface repairs of Highway 7 near 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th Streets, near Lexington Lane and near Pawnee Drive will be begin Oct. 9. Temporary cold asphalt patches at each of these areas will be replaced with permanent hot asphalt patches. Work is expected to be complete within three days, weather permitting.

The Water Division is completing a phased project to install sections of pipe at these locations on Highway 7, currently working near Pawnee Drive. Permanent repairs are made only after all pipe installation projects are completed for cost-effectiveness and to reduce traffic disruptions for the public.

During the work, traffic control will be in place on Highway 7, diverting motorists into the turning lane to maintain traffic in both directions. Please drive slowly and use caution through the work zones.

The Women’ Professional Rodeo Association has awarded the Rooftop Rodeo with the prestigious title of Medium Rodeo Committee of the Year.

“As the 2017 regular season comes to a close this week, the WPRA is pleased to announce their contract award winners that work tirelessly behind the scenes to make it all happen and keeps the Association alive and well.

This past year the Rooftop Rodeo did a complete overhaul of their rodeo ground and the results spoke for themselves,” said WPRA spokesperson Ann Bleiker.

As the years and weather have worked their troubling magic over the dirt inside Granny May Arena, the ground inside the spectacular complex began to erode. This spring, the Town of Estes Park invested $125,000 to improve the ground footing and make the arena an even better showcase for the community and events that utilize the facility.

The Women's Professional Rodeo Association was formed in 1948 when thirty-eight cowgirls came together in San Angelo, Texas to create an organization dedicated to the promotion and advancement of women in the sport of rodeo. The earliest pioneers of the Girl's Rodeo Association (GRA) were ropers, bronc riders, and barrel racers. Today, the Association is headquartered in Colorado Springs, Colorado and boasts of over two thousand five hundred members.

Kevin Lundberg To Host Town Hall Meeting October 7 This Saturday, October 7, at 2:00 p.m, Kevin Lundberg will be hosting a town hall meeting open to the public. LWV Voter Forum For Hospital Board Election The League of Women Voters of Estes Park is sponsoring a Voter Forum to introduce Hospital Board candidates for the Estes Park Medical Center District. The Forum will be held on Monday, October 9, from 7 to 9 p. m., in the Trustee Room of the Estes Park Town Hall, 170 MacGregor Avenue.

The candidates appearing on the ballot for the Hospital Board are: David Batey, Sandy Begley, Bert Bergland, Bruce Carmichael, Linda Hanak, Monty Miller, Diane Muno and Bill Pinkham.

These candidates have been invited to participate in this Forum and will appear on the Larimer County Coordinated Election ballot for November 7. Larimer County should mail the ballots to Hospital District voters during the third week of October.

The November 7 mail-in ballot may contain other items depending on each voter’s specific location. For Estes Park School District voters, the ballot will include School Board candidates and a school mill levy issue. For Larimer County residents there will also be resolu-

tions concerning a sales tax extension and office terms for County officials.

Coming To Estes Park On October 15Jena Griswold, 2018 Secretary Of State Candidate Jena Griswold is returning to Estes Park, her hometown, to speak about her campaign for Colorado Secretary of State in the 2018 election. This event is on Sunday, October 15, from 4:00-5:30 p.m., in Room 202 of the Estes Park Town Hall.

Jena grew up in Estes Park, is a lawyer and small business owner, and has been active in politics in Colorado and Washington D. C. She worked on voters’ rights matters in Barack Obama’s 2012 campaign, and served as D. C. liaison for Governor Hickenlooper to obtain federal recovery dollars for Colorado after the 2013 floods.

Jena is a registered candidate for Colorado Secretary of State for the 2018 election on the Democratic ticket. The Secretary of State serves a pivotal role in Colorado state governance by administering Colorado laws for voter registration, campaign finance, business and commercial statutes for profit and nonprofit businesses, secured transactions under the UCC, regulation of lobbyists and notary publics, plus laws regulating charities and fundraising.

As Secretary of State, Jena’s emphasis will include protecting Coloradans’ vot-

ing rights and voter privacy. This is especially important with the recent Department of Homeland Security disclosure that Colorado’s systems were targeted by hackers before the 2016 election. Elkhorn Ave. to a 42 year old male from Estes Park, CO. On September 29 at 1:51 a.m. police stopped the driver of a vehicle in the 200 block of Moraine Ave. for a traffic violation and charged the 26 year old male driver from Estes Park with criminal impersonation, driving while license is denied, uninsured motor vehicle and reckless driving. He was also found to be wanted on a warrant for failure to appear for driving without a driver’s license and careless driving. He was transported to Larimer County Detention Center.

Each September and October, thousands of visitors are drawn to Estes Park to watch herds of elk gather in the valley for their mating season, or “rut.” With this popular activity comes the responsibility for everyone to be safe and respect these majestic animals. During the rut, the male “bull” elk are irritable, aggressive and extremely dangerous to onlookers who get too close. Estes Park Police Chief Wes Kufeld commented, “The elk in town may seem tame, but they are still wild and unpredictable. Safety should be first on the minds of elk- viewers, so they can have a great experience.”

“Every day our Estes Park Emergency Communications Center receives numerous calls for police officers or police auxiliary to respond to elk issues around

Town, and the vast majority of issues are caused by people,” commented Chief Kufeld. He explained that the most common reports to dispatch are people getting too close to the elk and “elk jams,” caused when drivers park their vehicles in the way of traffic in order to watch the elk.

The Police Department provides the following tips to visitors for safe elk viewing: • Elk are wild animals which must be observed from a safe distance to avoid injury or death. If an animal is carefully watching you and appears “jumpy” when you move, you are too close.

• Keep pets secured on a leash and do not allow them to bark at, lunge at, or chase wildlife.

• Never block traffic. Move your vehicle to a safe place completely off the roadway to watch elk.

• Do not imitate an elk call, or bugle, when elk are irritable during the rut.

This can endanger you and the elk.

• Elk know no boundaries, but people do. Respect private property when viewing wildlife.

The same tips should be considered

each spring when calving season takes place. During this time, female elk, or cows, become irritable and highly protective of their young calves. Though they may look harmless, like the bull elk during the rut, cows are extremely dangerous during calving season. The Estes Park Police Department and the Police Auxiliary periodically assist with wildlife education and may provide “safe viewing” tip cards when they are on the scene of a wildlife viewing opportunity.

Program By Big Thompson Conservation Dist. On Forest Restoration & Wildfire Reduction Project Big Thompson Conservation District with the direction of the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) will be conducting a forest restoration and wildfire risk reduction project on the Cheley Colorado Camps and Curry properties south of Estes Park, CO, beginning early October with conclusion in May 2018.

The project goals are to improve forest ecosystem health through building resilience of the forest and improving wildlife habitat and forage. This process will include manual as well as machine thinning of the forest on these properties.

The Homer Rouse trail that runs

through the project area will also benefit from this project.

There will be a short program about forest ecology and frequent-fire ecosystems and management tools implementation, with a question and answer period for the community regarding this project.

The public is invited to attend the education and information session at the Estes Valley Library in the Wasson room, from 5 to 7 p.m., Oct. 10, 2017.

Communicate, Communicate, Communicate-Part 1 October is Conflict Resolution Month.

To better equip citizens in resolving conflict, Melissa Westover, Executive Director and Manager of Estes Valley Restorative Justice Partnership, will address different aspects of conflict and give helpful ideas and resources regarding conflict management through weekly articles during October. Estes Valley Restorative Justice Partnership offers two programs to assist citizens of the Estes Valley in conflict resolution. These programs are Restorative Community Mediation for low level disputes and Facilitated Conversations for groups and individuals looking to resolve conflict in a less formal setting. Better communication is a concept often tossed about as the great panacea for resolving conflict. It is hard to argue this point. Though the concept is quite simple from Webster’s perspective, deep challenges exist.

One of the most interesting issues in today’s world is the various means we have of communicating. In the current technological age we have numerous options available to us. We can email, text, tweet, instant message, etc. The entire world can know what we are doing or what we think about any topic due to social media. A recent study conducted by the Pew Institute revealed that 68 percent of Americans use the internet and of those, 79 percent have a Facebook Page. This means that over 173 million Americans interact on Facebook! As a result, we are able to directly and instantly connect and communicate with many, many people. This has some great benefits to us but also provides significant challenges.

One issue in communicating via technology is that we do not get the benefit of nonverbal communication. The advent of the emoji was intended to help address this issue (insert smiley face). However, we don’t hear voice inflection or observe body language, thus making the communication fairly one dimensional. Sometimes the intended message is missed or misconstrued, leading to significant con-

flict and misunderstanding. Also, people tend to feel more comfortable saying things via technology that they would not otherwise say in a social context. In our culture we tend to be avoidant, and technology feeds this tendency by allowing us to express ourselves without interpersonal contact. We can break off a relationship with a text, argue our point on a Facebook thread, call names or declare love via email and not have to deal with that fearful, often messy faceto- face interaction.

The myth is that if we use technology to communicate we are hidden when we make a harsh comment or that it will ease a difficult conversation. The reality is that one-way conversations or comments in written form leave too many unanswered questions for the recipient. The problems that arise as a result usually make matters worse than if a face-to-face or voice-tovoice interaction had originally taken place.

Technology is a great way to disperse information such as meeting times, reading materials for meetings, agendas, data, etc.

Texting is a great way to let your spouse know to pick up a loaf of bread while at the store. Positive, supporting comments on a Facebook thread are rarely misconstrued. But when it comes to hot topics debated on social media, conflict resolution is often not the goal. Usually the exact opposite occurs and division and anger erupt. People who have been friends sometimes part ways because of an interaction on social media. The big takeaway is that difficult conversations are best face-to-face or perhaps by phone.

If there is any chance information might be misconstrued, it’s best to just pick up the phone or make an appointment to talk. If you are angry or upset, take a timeout before sending that email, message or text. A cooling off period helps give us needed time to let emotions subside and determine our next steps.

This is by no means a comprehensive treatment of this very complex topic. But taking the time to consider the pros and cons in communicating via technology will benefit us as we work toward developing and maintaining strong relationships and healthy conflict management strategies. Next week I’ll address other ideas related to this very important topic of communication.

It’s curious that the burned-out bulbs of this sign make me smile when I drive by and turn on Rambling—not Ambling—Drive.

“Simple pleasures for simple minds,” my dad would tease.

Why does a street sign with missing letters make me chuckle to myself? Partly because I like a street named “Ambling.” It’s a feel-good word, amble is. And partly because in a way, a sign with missing letters is similar to the guy who walks around with a “kick me” post-it note stuck to his back.

Nobody intends to kick him, it’s just funny that the sticker is there unbeknownst to the stickee. Why we find a “kick me” sticky note humorous is not something I understand, but it is part of our culture and so we laugh, just like we laugh at knockknock jokes.

I get a tickle out of road “pavin” because I need something to laugh about.

How fortunate I am that my troubles are so petty! It’s not very funny when the water heater went cold on the first snowy day of autumn. I can’t make myself laugh about the tree branch that fell on my car, leaving a dent the size of a dime that will cost $650 to repair (my deductible covers all but $50 of it, but honestly…). And it’s no laughing matter to buy the humongo-size bucket of popcorn at the dollar theater in Fort Collins, only to find out that dollar theater popcorn isn’t really popcorn, it’s pieces of soggy cardboard shaped like miniature thunderclouds.

Which brings me to this: I like popcorn that crunches when I eat it. But there are people out there who have a syndrome called misophonia, and when they hear someone chomping popcorn—especially in the movie theater, and especially when

they make a lot of noise reaching into the bag for the popcorn, they become anxious, disgusted or fearful. They may have emotional distress over it, may fly off the handle, or even have a desire to wrap their hands around the neck of the person making the chewing noise and shake.

I’m not making this up. This funky aversion to a specific noise is also known as “selective sound sensitivity syndrome” and medical experts tell us “the disease can put a cramp on your social life. ” (www.webmd.com) Really? Doctors are suggesting that your friends may not want to invite you over to sit around their campfire, roasting marshmallows and eating crunchy popcorn because you might want to strangle them? Unbelievable!

If you think eating popcorn is dangerous, don’t let someone with misophonia be nearby when you eat a banana. Squish.

Estes Park Medical Center Board of Directors Election November 7, 2017 The Estes Park Medical Center is an essential resource for our community.

To The Editor: Following the resignation of the former Estes Park Medical Center (EPMC) Board in April, Bob Dickeson, Monty Miller, Diane Muno, David Batey and I were appointed by the County Commissioners to serve as the Interim Hospital Board. The interim board has brought an exceptional level of strategic leadership, financial expertise and health industry experience to address the health and future of the Estes Park Medical Center; and it’s been an honor to serve with them. My personal qualifications include 40 years with Weyerhaeuser in sales, marketing and strategic planning, and 12 years on the Town Board, eight years as mayor.

The rapid change in EPMC CEOs over the past 15 years has interfered with our Medical Center's ability to realize its full potential to effectively and efficiently serve our community. Thus, our focus has been on good governance, transparency, and regaining the community’s trust in the hospital board. We’ve had no personal agendas, and have established an excellent working relationship with the CEO, Dr. Larry Leaming, the EPMC leadership team and staff to address current issues and identify opportunities for improvement.

our community now has access to our emails and to Board meeting videos on the EPMC website. (epmedcenter.com) The healthcare industry is undergoing substantial change in technology, funding, and competition. We’re working with the EPMC leadership team to implement a strategic planning process that will ensure EPMC remains a strong, long-term, sustainable resource to meet our community’s medical needs.

The Interim Board term expires in November, and four of us are running for the Estes Park Medical Center Board of Directors in the November 7th election.

Bob Dickeson has been a great contributor to our team, but due to other obligations has chosen not to run in the November 7 election. We are delighted to endorse Sandy Begley for our team. She has prior distinguished service on the EPMC Board and also as interim CFO, and would be an excellent member of our team.

Crimes Of The Heart Opens Next Weekend-Get Your Tickets Today

Warm-hearted, irreverent, zany and brilliantly imaginative, “Crimes of the Heart” promises to entertain and enlighten its audiences. The Pulitzer Prize-winning play by Beth Henley will be presented Friday and Saturday October 13, 14, 20, 21 at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday October 16 & 17 at 2:00 p.m at the YMCA of the Rockies Hempel Auditorium, 2515 Tunnel Road Estes Park, CO 80511.

The play is set in Hazelhurst, Mississippi, where the three Magrath sisters have gathered to await news of the family patriarch, their grandfather, who is living out his last hours in the local hospital.

Mary Hunter plays the role of Lenny as the oldest, unmarried sister facing diminishing marital prospects. Meg (Becky Browning) who quickly outgrew Hazelhurst, is back after her failed singing career on the West Coast. And Babe (Kathleen Kaplan Toal), the youngest, is out on bail after having shockingly just shot her husband in the stomach.

The troubles of the three sisters—which

are grave and yet, somehow hilarious— are highlighted by their priggish cousin Chick (Cassie Weber), by the awkward young lawyer (Ryan Lynch) who tries to keep Babe out of jail while helplessly trying not to fall in love with her, and Doc (Lawrence Meredith) who was once in love with Meg before she ran off to California to pursue her singing career.

Ultimately, this is a story of how the play's characters escape the past to seize the future. Its telling, however, is so true to life, touching and consistently funny that it will linger in the mind long after the curtain has come down.

An Invitation From Post 119 Changes are happening at American Legion Post 119! Due to the combined generosity of numerous donors, volunteers, organizations and business sponsors, the historical icon at the corner of Highways 7 and 36 has been getting quite a facelift. The public is invited to join an Open House celebration of this achievement on Saturday afternoon, October 14 from 1-4 p.m.

Refreshments and building tours will be offered.

The structure that houses Post 119 was originally a Bureau of Reclamation office building, built in 1939 as part of the ColoradoBig Thompson project.

Post 119 acquired the building from the Bureau in 1954. While some structural improvements were completed over the decades, as years passed the building started to show its age in unpleasant ways. Thanks to a generous donor, several years ago the Legion was able to begin a siding project and build a new entry way. In the past few months, new donations and volunteer efforts are renewing the effort to revitalize Post 119.

The roof is the most recent example of the huge improvements that are in process. The cupola was recently repainted by volunteers. Just this week, Soderburg Roofing is replacing the crumbling roof after years of Legion

fundraising for that purpose.

The Great Hall has been undergoing a huge renovation in recent weeks, with new curtains, paint, and ceiling fans, and lighting provided by ambitious volunteers as well as generous donors. This hall has been transformed into a lovely and practical event venue that is available for a wide variety of occasions.

And we are not done yet! A project is in process with a grant from the Colorado Historical Society to complete an architectural review of the structure and help prioritize needed improvements. This review will pave the way for grant funding to complete future projects.

The American Legion is a nonpartisan nonprofit organization that was chartered and incorporated by Congress in 1919 as a patriotic veterans organization devoted to mutual helpfulness. Estes Park’s Post 119 was chartered in 1920 as the local branch of that national organization. It is located at 850 N. St. Vrain Avenue. Veterans and their family members are encouraged to join and support this worthy organization.

The Estes Park Nonprofit Resource Center, is pleased to present this exciting full-day, comprehensive training – Mastering the Board Game - designed for nonprofit and government leaders, staff, board, and community members being held at the YMCA of the Rockies on Monday, October 23, 2017 from 8:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. This incredible program will not only benefit those currently serving on government, taxing district, and nonprofit boards, but can provide insights to community members who are interested in serving on these boards or who would like to know more about how policy governance works.

Our goal is for our community to have a clear understanding of the distinctions between governance and management, and how boards can create maximum benefit/achievement or purpose by optimizing both the empowerment and systematic accountability of staff.

governance and board/staff relationships, and how employing principle-based strategies to address these complex issues transforms the dysfunctional or adequate Board into the collaborative and exceptional one.

Community Organizations Rally To Help September 8 Fire Victims

Five persons were left homeless after all their possessions were destroyed in an apartment fire in Estes Park on the afternoon of September 8, 2017.

“Even when your worldly possessions are few, losing them all is devastating,” said Rev. Dr. Tim McLemore, Executive Director of Crossroads Ministry of Estes Park. At the request of Captain Corey Pass of the Estes Park Police Department, McLemore joined local Red Cross representative Bill Howell at the scene on Stanley Avenue, to assist with interpreting on behalf of the displaced residents.

One unit – housing a total of five adults from two separate families – was destroyed, while a nearby unit was smokedamaged but habitable.

Dr. McLemore, representing Crossroads Ministry of Estes Park and the Estes Park Extension Salvation Army, along with Bill Howell, Community Liaison Lead for Disaster Cycle Services, Northern Colorado Chapter of the Red Cross, met that afternoon with three of the displaced adults at the Crossroads Ministry facility in Estes Park to coordinate assistance. By 5:00 p.m., the organizations had arranged lodging for four nights in two rooms at a

local hotel. Crossroads also issued vouchers for clothing and household items from the Village Thrift Shop and Elizabeth Guild, and for gasoline, thanks in part to funding available through Crossroads’ partnership with the Salvation Army. Additionally, the Red Cross was able to provide immediate assistance valued at several hundred dollars per person to help each of the adults with pressing needs.

At a follow-up meeting on Tuesday, September 12, Crossroads and the Red Cross provided additional basic assistance and confirmed that the families had been able to secure longer-term housing. Crossroads also was able to provide a much-needed air purifier for residents in an adjoining unit.

“Possessions were destroyed, but hope and compassion prevailed,” McLemore said, “thanks to the commitment and cooperation of three local service organizations, along with the labors of volunteers and staff, the professionalism of the Estes Park Police Department and Volunteer Fire Department, and the generosity of many faithful supporters.”

This forward looking program defines in fact-based terms emerging drone capabilities as they grow from their embryonic stage and move into full consumer and commercial product maturity. UAV products and services portend tremendous positive potential for the American economy and society in general. As with any new high potential-high technology consumer product, the risks and dangers to the public are equally as great as the positive benefits. During this Estes Aviation Club lecture introductory, intermediate and advanced drone/UAV concepts are being presented and discussed. Attendees will experience some “hands-on� learning with micro and mini drones during the session in a highly interactive and informative session.

Presenter Mr. R. W. “Church� Churchill spent over thirty-five years working in diverse advanced computer science fields within national defense, aerospace, and global manufacturing corporations. His immediate work includes drafting civilian drone regulations now under review in Britain, France, Spain, Belgium, the U.S Senate, and all 50 state legislatures.

His field work and expertise includes developing artificial intelligence systems, Six Sigma quality sciences, business intelligence management, and international regulatory affairs. His career path included ex-pat assignments in Europe, Latin America, and Australia. In 1989 he co-founded the Cleveland based SAGA Institute, a private off-the-grid think tank that focuses on geo-politics, foreign affairs, and statecraft. Church holds an MBA in International Management from Case-Western Reserve University and is a Senior Fellow at the Global Institute for Civilian Drones (www.gifcd.org). His published White Papers cover topics ranging from digital communication platforms to technology marketplace economics to Capitalist boardroom ethics.

This Estes Park Internationale Aviation Club presentation will be on October 10, 2017, beginning at 6:30 p.m. in the Estes Valley Library’s Hondius Room. Happy 60th Anniversary To Jack & Ann Dinsmoor

Jack & Ann celebrated their 60th Wedding Anniversary on October 5, 2017. They were married in 1957 in Washington, DC. Jack & Ann have enjoyed 20 wonderful years in Estes Park.

They have three children, nine grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren. Since moving to Estes, Jack & Ann have been active in their church, Mountain View Bible Fellowship. Jack was a part time Park Ranger, has been active in Rotary and served on the Board for the Estes Park Housing Authority. Ann works for Arthur J. Gallagher Insurance and is a member of the Estes Park Woman’s Club and Columbines.

Jack & Ann are very thankful for the years they have had together after meeting on a blind date in 1955 when both were in college.

RETIRED? HOW’S THAT WORKING FOR YOU? Richard George was our guest speaker last Sunday at the Church of Christ morning services. The message he delivered was powerful and so relevant in a community where so many of us are of retirement age or beyond, that I just couldn’t help passing on some of his message. Richard recounted the story of King David, the giant, Goliath, killer of former days, and winner of many battles, while serving as Israel’s king in later years. He went to war one last time, again against the Philistines. However, this time when a ‘giant warrior’ set out to kill David, he had to be defeated by one of David’s ‘mighty men’. After the battle, the men ‘retired’ David. They said: “You will never go out to battle with us again!”

Many people in our society hear or have heard words that are similar to these. “It’s time for you to step down. You are not needed here anymore.” These would be hard words for any warrior to hear…as it is hard for anyone in our time to be told that they are no longer needed…or wanted…in their former capacity. A dear Longmont friend had served Continental Airlines for many years, renowned Captain on every flight that he flew. Then one day the word came. “Bob, you’ve reached that age. You can’t fly passengers anymore!” How did he handle it? How would you have handled it? Or, better yet, how did you handle it when you got a similar message from the ‘powers that be’?

Bob handled it just like David, using his new ‘free time’ to do good things. The reason David’s ‘mighty men’ wanted to ‘remove’ David from battle, was so that he could continue on, in other ways, to be a ‘lamp of Israel’. He still had work to do and he was being saved so that he could do some even greater work for God…and for us. As we all know, David wrote Psalms that touch the lives of people at most funerals…the popular 23rd. Psalm…and in devotionals in millions of homes. He was also now free to make preparations needed for his son, Solomon, to build God’s temple, and carried on many more works that blessed the lives of people after he ‘retired’ from his ‘battles’. All of these, not just winning physical battles, was a part of God’s plan for his life. Later it’s reported, “David, when he had served God’s purpose for his life, slept with his fathers.” He had a life-long ministry to carry out to fulfil his ‘purpose’ for God…and so do we!

‘Retirement’ isn’t the end, is it? God has such good plans and purposes for His people when they are no longer hampered by daily rigors of former occupations. How have you chosen to spend your retirement years? Some will find it a time of freedom to spend their remaining days doing little but pursuing those things that they’ve always wanted to…for themselves. Their ‘bucket list’ often involves: travelling, pursuing hobbies, and the like. Notice ‘for themselves’. The real way of ‘fulfilling God’s purpose in our lives’ usually will be found in doing things ‘for others’. The Bible talks of ‘older men and women teaching the younger how to live and be successful’, as they have been. In addition there are numerous volunteer activities available that will bless the lives of others. David was ‘retired’ so that he could continue to be a ‘lamp’ for Israel. Likewise, each of us has been ‘freed’ through retirement so we can increasingly become a ‘light of the world, that cannot be hidden’ being committed to the things that will ‘fulfill God’s purpose’ in our lives before we ‘sleep with our fathers’. We have much to do. Our ‘retirement’ will come in heaven…if we fulfill His purpose in our lives. Let’s do it.

Like to dance? Friday Niters Dance Club is seeking new members and has a deal for you. Singles and first time attendees are invited to enjoy the season’s opening dance on October 13th for free! The Kings of Swing will be playing to the theme of "Harvest Moon” in the Aspen Room at The Rodeway Inn, 1701 N. Lake Avenue.

The evening begins at 5:45 p.m. with a dance lesson, followed by social time from 6:30 to 7:00 and dancing until 10.

Dress is casual.

Friday Niters features 7 dances per year on the second Friday of the month from October through May, with a dinner/dance on New Year’s Eve. Dances include dance lessons, live music and a reasonably priced cash bar. The Rodeway Inn has the best dance floor in Estes and the room is recently remodeled! It's busy, but not crowded. We enjoy a variety of music that allows dancing to the fox trot, waltz, Latin and swing. Even a country tune or two. We have a wide mix of skill

levels - no need to be shy.

Membership dues include the six regular dances and the New Year’s Eve dance (no lesson). There is an additional charge for the dinner portion of the New Year’s Eve celebration. Dues, which are prorated after the first dance of the season, are $190 for couples and $90 for single members. Guest fees are $30/couple and $15/singles per dance for new attendees and $35 per dance for former members.

Estes Park area residents may attend two dances per season, plus the New Year's Eve Dance, as guests. Guests who do not live in the Estes Park area may attend as often as they wish.

Be sure to keep your mouth open; this is often forgotten and a bit difficult to get used to, but it really helps get the full aroma and also helps reduce the effect of the alcohol on the olfactory senses. Next, taste the liquid. Hold it in your mouth and let it run over the entire surface of your tongue. Finally, drink it down and note how it feels off the back of the tongue. I like to make notes on what I am smelling and tasting at each of these steps, but then I am a bit of a geek, so notes are optional!

Roam around the room sampling at your leisure. Note: this is very important, be sure to drink water between samplings. This not only helps clear your pallet for the next sample; it also helps your body handle the alcohol you are consuming. Eat plenty of food and take your time. The altitude (7,500 feet) and dry atmosphere of Estes Park have an effect on us all, but particularly on those of you who we affectionately call flatlanders. Remember this is an educational opportunity for you to learn about a wide variety of spirits. Do not over do the experience-Be safe!

Special Events Highlight Author Reyna Grande’s Estes Park Visit The Estes Valley Library is pleased to welcome author Reyna Grande to Estes Park as part of this year’s One Book One Valley festivities. This year, the community selected Grande’s memoir, “The Distance Between Us” as the featured allcommunity read. Anyone who has not yet had the opportunity to read the book may contact the Library to be on the waiting list for the next available copy.

Grande’s visit will include three appearances and three special talks.

On Thursday, October 12 at 6:00 p.m., Grande will lead a Spanish-language conversation about the book. This presentation is especially for those whose native language is Spanish, as well as for those interested in learning and practicing their conversation skills “en español”. Tickets for this free event are available at the Library.

Then on Thursday, October 12 at 7:30 p.m., Grande will be the featured guest for the featured English-language community gathering, “An Evening with

Reyna Grande”. Grande will share insights from “The Distance Between Us” and her personal life story that inspired the memoir. Tickets for this free event are available both at the Library and at Macdonald Book Shop.

Grande will be available after the talk to sign copies of the book. Readers may bring in their copies of the book, and Macdonald Book Shop will have a limited number of copies available that night for purchase.

Both events on October 12 will be held at the Mountain View Bible Fellowship church located at 1575 S. St. Vrain Avenue in Estes Park.

On Friday morning, October 13, Grande will then be visiting with local students from the Estes Park High School and Eagle Rock School communities. Several classes have been reading and discussing the book in preparation for Grande’s visit.

EVICS Continues To Grow Estes Valley Investment in Childhood Success, EVICS, has been supporting the Estes Valley for 11 years. Throughout that time EVICS has generously provided over $200,000 in childcare and preschool scholarships to more than 370 children.

Many families in the Estes Valley community rely on short term childcare financial assistance to stay in the valley.

EVICS is an affiliate with the home visit program, Parents as Teachers and have served 44 families and 67 children since the program began in 2011. Director, Nancy Almond, has been with the organization for 10 years and has seen huge growth in our community. “We are so grateful for the support from our community over the years.

Families struggle to make it in Estes Park, and when we are able to take a little bit of the stress off, by making childcare accessible, or supporting a working parent through a tough time, it benefits our whole community,” explains Nancy.

Recycling Update By: Judi Smith

October is a busy month for the League of Women Voters. Oct. 9 is the Hospital Board Forum, Oct. 16 is the School Board Forum and ballot questions for both school and county, Oct. 21 is Estes Recycles Day and Oct. 25 is our program on climate change.

Each year, the LWV & Community Recycling Committee presents the Jim Martinsen Award to someone who goes above and beyond to improve the recycling options in the Estes Valley. This year, JoAnn Batey earned the distinction for the glass recycling bins.

Clear Intentions is a glass remanufacturing company in the Greater Denver area. They turn used glass into pellets called cullet, which are then sold to companies that produce glass products, such as bottles, glassware, jewelry and supplies for the art market. Because they sell to a variety of product manufacturers, Clear Intentions can use glass of all colors.

They are not restricted to bottle and jar shapes. They accept any unadulterated glass. However, they cannot take mirrors, plate glass (windows), lenses or pottery or ceramics.

JoAnn spent 26 months from September 2014 to November 2016, working with Clear Intentions to develop our glass program. In order to provide free pickup of glass, Clear Intentions requires a minimum number of customers who contract for curbside service at their place of business. Currently this includes The Barrel, Snowy Peaks Winery, Elkins Distillery, Ridgeline and the Other Side Restaurant, which allows for weekly pickup (on Mondays). As summer traffic increased the size of the town, it was discovered that a second bin was imperative and JoAnn recently accomplished that also.

As of Monday, Clear Intentions says that our village is their top producer of used glass! Congratulations to all con-

tributors. We would like to see additional businesses contract for curbside service, which supports expansion. If interested, please contact JoAnn at joannbatey@gmail.com for assistance.

Bears apparently like beer and wine, mayonnaise, peanut butter, and other things stored in glass. Please rinse or wipe containers before putting them into the bins and never set them outside the bin. JoAnn patrols the site periodically and has been faced with cleaning up after a bear visits what has been left accessible.

Be kind and only leave what fits inside the bins.

JoAnn has other talents as well. For three years, she has created our craft projects (from recycled materials) that often appear at our booths for Duck Race, Mountain Festival and other local events. My favorites have been the alligator from egg cartons and the sailboats that really float on used corks.

JoAnn is equally involved in other local endeavors including the Senior Advisory Board for the Community Center and she characteristically proves herself indispensable at LWV events, such as Estes Recycles Day. October 21 is now only two weeks away.

Estes Recycles Day is an opportunity to rid your house or business of accumulated items taking up space in your closets. Bestway Paint Recycling (free), CRC Electronic recycling (fees), Noon Rotary Shred-A-Thon (free – donations to scholarship fund accepted), FreecycleEstes (big garage sale with no money).

The Estes Park Learning Place invites everyone to a special event on Friday, Oct. 20 at 7 p.m. Cowboy Brad Fitch will perform an “All-Request Extravaganza” concert, as a fund raiser and gift to the Learning Place’s donors and the community. “Treats” include free admission, treat bags for everyone, a silent auction

and refreshments.

The Estes Park Learning Place offers one-to-one tutoring with teaching plans unique to each individual student. Their goal is to give students skills and confidence to cultivate learning and reach their highest potential. Founded in 1998 as a skill-building center for learners of all ages, EPLP became a charitable non-profit organization in January 2003 and serves all of Estes Park.

Vida is a beautiful, 11 month old dog.

She is energetic and would make a great hiking or running partner. Vida can settle very nicely and does great with children and other dogs. She is a happy, friendly girl that needs a bit of manner work but she is smart and eager to learn.

She is house trained and wants to meet everyone.

Kemah is three years old, she waited in Texas for a forever home for a long time and joined us here in Estes Park. She is deaf but she is hardly different than other dogs. She would do best with a dog buddy as she loves to play with other dogs and communication with a deaf dog is a bit easier when they follow along with a hearing dog. Kemah is not a high energy dog but does enjoy an active home without small children. She could be a great running partner or enjoy a yard to play in just as well. She is a little shy at first but will be an incredibly lovable friend.

Alexe is an adorable black kitten who is 11 weeks old. He is still a little shy but is a friendly, sweet soul.

School activities Armando enjoys are being on track and soccer teams and a member of the National Honor Society.

Armandoâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s favorite quote is â&#x20AC;&#x153;Live your todays, hope for tomorrow.â&#x20AC;? That quote appeals to him because it shows him he should live life to the fullest.

After high school, Armando plans to attend college and go on to medical school to become a surgeon or a pathologist.

Bank of Estes Park Student Legacy Award: In addition to being awarded the Student of the Week, each winner will be given the opportunity to nominate the school program of their choice for the chance to win $500. At the end of the school year, one such nomination will be randomly selected, and that school program will be awarded the $500 Bank of Estes Park Student Legacy Award, in that student's name.

The Estes Park Newcomers Club will hold its October general Meeting at Taharaa Mountain Lodge, 3110 South St. Vrain Avenue, on October 19th. Members, prospective members, new residents, and seasoned residents, who have not been club members, of the Estes Park area are invited to participate in a social time at 5:30 p.m., dinner at 6:00 p.m., and the program at 7:00 p.m.

For the October meeting everyone is encouraged to bring canned goods and non-perishables for the Crossroads Ministry to help families in need.

The program will be guest speaker Sheldon Rosenkrance, Superintendent of schools for the Estes Park School District.

Mr. Rosenkrance is in his fourth year at the Estes Park School District. Originally from Mackay, Idaho, he attended Idaho State University as well as Washington State University. He was both a teacher and principal in Idaho and Washington prior to coming to Colorado. He was principal for Coupeville Middle/High Schools for eight years on Whidbey Island in Washington when he accepted the position of Superintendent of Schools in

Estes Park. This is his 28th year in education. He has a great passion for providing the best educational opportunities for students, staff, and community.

Mr. Rosenkranceâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s wife, Janie, is a math teacher for Poudre School District. They have four daughters, three live in Colorado and one in Seattle. Their family has had a great transition from Washington to Colorado and they truly enjoy being part of such a supportive community.

In their free time, they enjoy hiking and exploring the many wonders of Estes Park and the surrounding Rocky Mountain National Park. Superintendent Rosenkrance truly believes that Estes Park is a special place. He is appreciative of the opportunity to build on the strengths of the district as well as the ability to partner with the community to enhance these efforts.

Sponsoring the event is Estes Park P.E.O Chapter IY, which will donate its proceeds to P.E.O International to support women’s scholarships, grants and low-interest loans for continuing education. With the month of October our minds turn to ghouls and goblins and spirits of all kinds, and the basement of Estes Parkâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s American Legion Hall turns into a haunted house worthy of your chills and thrills and freaks and shrieks!

All souls are invited to experience this 2nd Annual electrifying opportunity each Friday and Saturday in October from 7-10 p.m. Tickets are $15 at the door.

A special â&#x20AC;&#x153;kid-friendlyâ&#x20AC;? day with treats and milder horrors will be held on Sunday October 29 from 1-3 p.m., for $5 per ticket. And, a â&#x20AC;&#x153;service industry nightâ&#x20AC;? on Friday the 13th from 7 p.m. â&#x20AC;&#x201C; midnight will offer special 2-for-1 ticket pricing for all folks who work in the service industry.

A group of talented (and perhaps a little sadistic?) volunteers has been working diligently to build a maze full of horrifying surprises, and another group of

volunteers is preparing for their roles as â&#x20AC;&#x153;scare charactersâ&#x20AC;? within that maze.

These volunteers are being skillfully led

by Kovo Mendoza, Jenn Bass, and Justice Warren.

Sponsors for the Haunted House will be memorialized in the delightfully spooky graveyard that will be in the front of the Legion building, so make sure you stop by to pay your respects!

Note that the Haunted House will not be open on Halloween night, so our volunteers may participate in downtown Estes Park Halloween traditions.

The Estes Park in Bloom steering committee presented the "Business Bright Spot" award to Estes Angler Sept. 29. Estes Valley Quilt Guild Meeting At Good Sam’s On October 11 The Estes Valley Quilt Guild meets on the second Monday of each month at Good Samaritan Village, 1901 Ptarmigan Trail. The October meeting will be held on the 11th. The meeting business meeting begins at 6:45 p.m. However, if you want to catch up with friends, come at 6:30 and visit. If you are visiting in Estes Park and would like to come, please join us. We do ask visitors for a $10 donation to help cover costs incurred for bring guest speakers in.

This month our speaker is Cathy Holmes and the title of her program is: "An Overview of Miniature Quilts."

Cathy was born and raised in northeastern Colorado and made her first quilt as a 4-H project at the age of 13. She studied engineering at CSU and moved to Richmond, VA where she worked in the semiconductor industry for 11 years before returning to Colorado and becoming a stay-at-home mom to three kids. She currently works two mornings a week at the local quilt shop in Erie. Cathy said, “I got serious about quilting in 1998 when I joined a guild while living in Virginia.

My quilting interests are generally very traditional. I love civil war era quilts (both reproductions and authentic antiques) and love intricate piecing. I have a habit of finishing spectacular quilt tops and then letting them sit out of the fear of quilting them! I am currently motivating myself to work on my machine quilting skills.”

This lecture will provide an overview of miniature quilts. As miniature quilts are often confused with small-scale quilts and wall hangings, Cathy will talk about what defines a quilt as a miniature quilt from a quilt show point of view. She will also share some of her favorite tools, tips, and techniques for successful small scale piecing. She will have quilts for display and will also include a slide show of spectacular miniature quilts by some very talented quilters. Cathy would love for guild members to bring their own quilts (and quilt tops) to share.

Note: the Estes Valley Quilt Guild Program Committee is pleased to introduce a new guild activity: EVQG Sewing Bee Bring your projects, trusty sewing machine & basic quilting supplies and prepare to sew & socialize the day away.

Consider the following: • Age at retirement – Not surprisingly, your retirement date likely will be heavily influenced by your financial situation – so, if you have to keep working, that’s what you’ll do. But if you have a choice in the matter, your decision could have a big impact on your investment strategy.

For example, if you want to retire early, you may need to save and invest more aggressively than you would if you plan to work well past typical retirement age.

Also, your retirement date may well affect when you start accepting Social Security payments; if you retire early, you might have to start taking your benefits at age 62, even though your monthly checks will be considerably smaller than if you waited until your “full” retirement age, which is likely to be 66 or 67.

• Retirement lifestyle – Some people want to spend their retirement years traveling from Athens to Zanzibar, while others simply want to stay close to home and family, pursuing quiet, inexpensive hobbies. Clearly, the lifestyle you choose will affect how much you need to accumulate before you retire and how much you will need to withdraw from your various investment accounts once you do.

• Second career – Some people retire from one career only to begin another. If you think you’d like to have a “second act” in your working life, you might need some additional training, or you might just put your existing expertise to work as a consultant. If you do launch a new career, it could clearly affect your finan-

cial picture. For one thing, if you add a new source of earned income, you might be able to withdraw less from your retirement accounts each year. (Keep in mind, though, that once you reach 70 ½, you will have to take at least some withdrawals from your traditional IRA and your 401(k) or other employer-sponsored retirement plan.) On the other hand, if you keep earning income, you can continue putting money into a traditional IRA (until you’re 70 ½) or a Roth IRA (indefinitely) and possibly contribute to a retirement plan for the self-employed, such as a SEP-IRA or an “owner-only” 401(k).

• Philanthropy – During your working years, you may have consistently donated money to charitable organizations. And once you retire, you may want to do even more. For one thing, of course, you can volunteer more of your time. But you also might want to set up some more permanent method of financial support.

Consequently, you might want to work with your legal advisor and financial professional to incorporate elements of your investment portfolio into your estate plans to provide more support for charitable groups.

As you can see, your retirement goals can affect your investment strategy – and vice versa. So, think carefully about what you want to accomplish, plan ahead and get the help you need. It takes time and effort to achieve a successful retirement, but it’s worth it.

“The Distance Between Us” This Year’s Community Read Hopes To Unite One Book One Valley: Voices from Estes Park High School. As part of this year’s One Book One Valley, hosted by the Estes Valley Library, author Reyna Grande will be visiting local high school students on Friday, October 13. This opportunity will help connect generations to the community conversation. Several classes at the Estes Park High School are reading “The Distance Between Us.” To help offer insights into the happenings at the high school, Will Peters, student in the school’s Publications class, has written this article.

This year’s One Book, One Valley is a memoir titled “The Distance Between Us,” written by Hispanic author Reyna Grande. It tells the story of her childhood after her parents traveled to America from Mexico seeking a better life, and how she stayed with her grandmother until she was summoned to follow them. This is a story many people in our community can relate to in one way or another, and this fact often goes unseen by many.

For this reason, “The Distance Between Us” was the perfect choice to bring the community together.

“I think this book was a great choice, ” said English teacher Tracey Williams, who is reading the book with her English III classes. “A lot of the kids in the school

may be able to relate to an immigration story like this. As we read the book in class, a lot of the American-born students are fascinated, because they've never had the experience highlighted like this. However, for the kids that immigrated here or had family that immigrated here, it's not as exciting, because it's just their lives. ” Another perspective on the bonding power of the memoir comes from Spanish teacher Glenn Case.

“It's a very good book to be selected at this time and the political climate, ” said Case. “It's very important to have conversations like this about the nature of immigration. A story like this, no matter what side of the issue you find yourself on, can help you understand the struggle many immigrants go through reaching this country. ” Discussions on the themes of the novel will be held at the Estes Valley Public Library on Sunday, October 8th in the Hondius Room at 2 p.m.

A special author night will also be held on Thursday, October 12. Reyna Grande will be giving a talk at Mountain View Bible Fellowship at 7:30 p.m., sponsored by the Estes Valley Library. Free tickets are available at the library and Macdonald Book Shop.

Sincere Gratitude To The Editor: It is very difficult to keep an athletic program together and proliferating when it has lost the use of its training facility for an extended period of time. This was and still is the case for the Estes Park swimming teams as a result of the aquatic center closing its doors on May 19th for extensive repairs and upgrades as part of its integration into the new Estes Valley Community Center. The closing threw a major curveball at the intended plan to have the kids continue to train throughout the summer to maintain and improve upon the significant gains that had been made during their regular competitive seasons. Fortunately, we live in Estes Park, where a number of entities sympathized with our plight and stepped up to offer their support and facilities for us to use to continue our training throughout the summer and fall - and for free of charge. No Access to Microfilm Reader and Historic Newspapers In preparation for the second floor library renovations, the staff will be packing the microfilm reader into storage on October 11. As a result, there will be no access available to microfilms of the historic Estes Park newspapers until the second floor re-opens in December. Anyone with a need to access the historic newspapers, or other microfilm content, is encouraged to do so by this Tuesday.

Barbara Foiles Barbara Nancy Lynn Foiles Barbara was born in 1927 in Highland Park, IL. She became an avid hiker after spending childhood summers at her family cabin adjacent to Rocky Mountain National Park in Colorado. At 16 she enjoyed climbing Longs Peak using the cable route.

Her love of the mountains drew her to CU in Boulder where she met her husband, Les, of 70 years and earned a combined degree in chemistry, zoology, mathematics and German in 1949.

She and Les married in 1947 and moved to Downers Grove, IL where they raised three daughters and a myriad of cats and dogs. She baked bread weekly, sewed the girls clothes, knit like a pro, got involved in Girl Scouts, sang in the church choir, learned all the local songbirds, grew a rose garden and multiple flower gardens, and read close to a book a day.

Every summer she and Les packed the girls in their car and traveled the

1,000 hot miles through Iowa and Nebraska back to her beloved cabin and hikes in the Park.

In 1969 Barbara returned to school and earned her microbiology degree.

She worked and taught as a microbiologist at Hinsdale Hospital for many years until she retired. Soon after, she and Les moved permanently to Estes Park near the cabin. Barb loved documenting her achievements. She joined the Estes weavers guild and hikers club and kept notebooks logging all the details of her weavings, investments and hikes. She and Les summited Longs Peak when they were 70 and Barb continued to hike into her 80s. She is survived by her husband, Les, her three daughters, Pamela, Holly and Kim, her seven grandchildren, her brother Jim and sister Pat. She was predeceased by her sister Connie.

Robert Ludlum “Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.”

Rob Ludlum was called home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, September 27, 2017 at Good Samaritan in Loveland, Colorado.

Robert Erl Ludlum was born June 24, 1929 in Battle Creek, Michigan to Robert Erl Ludlum and Celia Spencer Ludlum. He grew up in Columbus, Ohio graduating from Columbus North High School, from the Ohio State University (1953) with a Bachelor of Electrical Engineering and from St. Louis Uni- versity with a Masters Degree in Electrical Engineering. On September 17, 1949, he married Janet Louise Willcox in Columbus, OH. The couple lived in Ohio: Columbus, Springfield, Gallipolis & Kent; in University City, Missouri and in Cheshire, Connecticut. He worked in electric motor design and application for over 40 years for some of the world’s largest manufacturers of electric motors. In 1994, they moved to Estes Park, CO where they were involved in their church and community. Rob was a loyal member of Presbyterian Community Church of the Rockies and was a dedicated volunteer at Rocky Mountain National Park, accumulating over 11,000 hours. He was an active mem-

ber of Rotary Club of Estes Park (Noon Rotary). He is survived by nephews, in Columbus OH: John Thomas Ludlum (Cindi); Daniel Spencer Ludlum (Mary); James Robert Ludlum (Laurie) and great nephew: Stephen Christian Ludlum (Heziel) of Louisville KY; stepnieces, Carol (Don) Bessemer of Akron, Ohio and Barbara (Sterling) Cramer of Franklin, Tennessee; and many dear friends & neighbors. His parents; his brother, Thomas Spencer Ludlum, his sisters-in-law, Mary Ellen Shonting Ludlum and Dorothy Devendorf Syme Ludlum; great nephew, David Spencer Ludlum and sister-in-law, Dorothy Gardner, preceded him in death.

A memorial service for Rob and Jan Ludlum (who died August 23 of this year) will be held on Saturday, October 7th at 11:00 a.m. at the Presbyterian Community Church of the Rockies, Rev. Michael Moore presiding. Friends may call one hour before the service.

She was born on March 12, 1937 in Pontiac, MI to Rudolph and Josephine (Kosek) Pfeiffer. She graduated high school in Pontiac, MI and lived there till 1992 then moved to Estes Park, CO. On June 25, 1985 she married Harold Churchill in Las Vegas, NV. She was the head bookkeeper for Pontiac State Bank from 1967 till 1979, then became head bookkeeper for Huron Community Bank From 1979 till 1985.

Ann enjoyed cooking, baking, sewing, gardening, crocheting and cheating at Mexican Train, a Dominoes game. She is preceded in death by her parents, brother Paul Pfeiffer and sister Geri Cuny.

She is survived by husband Harold, sons Michael E. Holler, Mark E. Holler and his wife Vicky of Estes Park, Martyn Holler, daughters Mishelle M. McCann, Dianne Schultz, Denise Payne, Sandra Merritt, Laurie Ratschakowski, brothers Anthony Pfeiffer, John Pfeiffer, sister Kathleen Gurley, 18 grandchildren: Alexis, Jesse, Nicholas, Chelsey, Zak, Trevor, Kali, Ty, Dana, Joy, Amy J., Amy L., Danielle, Jennifer, Katelyn, Kris, Jared and Lea, and 16 great grandchildren: Braidan, Alyssa, Taylor, Zoe, Lauren, Angela, Ethan, Jayci, Cole, Mya, Keagan, Hudson, Hayes, Alaysia, Monte and Deuce.

Lawrence (Larry) Dale Lawrence Philip Dale (Larry), 93, joined his wife Shirley in Heaven on September 27, 2017.

He was the best dad in the world to daughters Robin Dale McCann (Pat) of Estes Park and Nancy Dale Klismet (Pete) of Windsor, Colorado; Grandpa to four grandchildren; and Great-Grandpa to Matthew Harding of Estes Park.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 51 years, Shirley Hill Dale; his brother Dr. Porter H. Dale; and his granddaughter, Lindsay Dale McCann Harding. Larry was a WWII veteran, graduated from the University of Vermont with a degree in physics; retired from many years of service with NORAD at age 55 to pursue his hobbies and interests, including aviation, photography, skiing, travel, and amateur (ham) radio. There was nothing he couldn't fix or invent, no math problem

he couldn't solve!

He introduced his girls to Estes Park at a young age and made many happy trips to Estes in recent years to visit daughter Robin and family and to photograph the beautiful scenery and wildlife in Rocky Mountain National Park.He will be laid to rest in Colorado Springs next to his beloved wife Shirley who passed away in September 2000.

He graduated from Murray High School in St. Paul in 1975, received a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology from Hamline University in St. Paul in 1980, was awarded a competitive Fiske Music scholarship in Piano Performance for 1985-1986 at the University of Colorado, Boulder, earned a Teaching Certification from Metro State College in 1994, and completed a Master’s degree in Special Education at the University of Northern Colorado in 1999. Don’s life was dedicated to helping others, particularly children. He worked for many years with troubled children at Forest Heights Lodge in Evergreen, and was a teacher of music, math, social studies, English, and physical education at several Evergreen and North and South Routt schools, receiving a Teacher of the Year award for 2016-2017. He received many awards for his piano performance, and brought his talent and love of music to people throughout his life. He excelled at speech and acting, and performed with the Evergreen Players. He was the music director or part of the music team at several churches over the years, including the Evergreen Christian Fellowship.

Don wrote and directed school musicals, including one that he wrote and co-directed during his bout with cancer - a children’s musical about bullying titled “RAK (Random Acts of Kindness) Ninjas” performed at Center Stage.

Don was an extraordinary athlete, competing very successfully in diving and tennis through his school years, and teaching and competing in tennis tournaments in his adult life. He was a passionate and gifted skier, and was never happier than when the fresh powder called his name at Mary Jane. Always up for adventure, his favorite outings with his dear life partner Diane (Din) Golden often involved great hikes and secluded mountain hot springs. Don was a hysterically funny storyteller, and often regaled family and friends with stories of his crazy misadventures. Don’s joy and love of life was contagious, and his deep spirituality guided him and helped him provide comfort and counsel to so many people.

Don was preceded in death by his father, William. He is survived by his mother Beryle (Bea), his partner Din and her sons Isaac and Wyatt Manobla, his daughter Jessica Williams, his brother Michael Williams (Sally) of Phippsburg, CO, sister Blythe Williams (Richard Kay) of Durham, NC, brother Jeffrey Williams (Lisa Conley) of Seattle, his nieces and nephews Patrick and Kirsten Williams, Adam and Sylvie Kay, and Zhen Williams, and many special cousins and countless friends.

The family appreciates the many kindnesses of the staff at Lutheran Hospice in Wheatridge, Colorado. Arrangements entrusted to Evergreen Memorial Park (www.evergreenmemorialpark.com).
