Every table will have a spooky sign reminding participants that masks have to stay on and kids need to wait until they exit to eat their candy.

There will be no performances that will attract a crowd. People will be encouraged to keep moving along the route.

We will be meeting the COVID mask requirements by calling this year's annual Halloween gathering a mask contest. Signs at both ends of the route, in newspapers and in social media will outline the rules, guidelines, and recommendations for the event.

Donna Carlson, Executive Director of the Estes Chamber of Commerce is please to announce that the chamber’s proposal to Larimer County Health to hold our hallowed Halloween celebration on Elkhorn Avenue has been approved!

Every year for 38 years our town has been granted permission from CDOT to close off Elkhorn Ave. from Riverside to Spruce Dr. to create a safe space for our kids to trick or treat on Halloween. This year, the Estes Chamber stepped in to help organize this effort and make it COVID-safe.

That being said, there will be some modifications to assure a safe and fun night for all. Those changes include: Tables will be lined along Elkhorn Ave. at six foot intervals for businesses to hand out candy, encouraging oneway, uni-directional movement with the use of arrows and directional signs, entering on the east side of E. Elkhorn, traveling along the north side of the street, with a u-turn at the Water Wheel, returning on the south side back to Riverside (see map).

Trick or Treaters will be required to check in at four Elkhorn entry points (Riverside, Water Wheel, Moraine and Big Horn) to receive a merchant-sponsored bag for participation. Participants will not be allowed to trick or treat with

Legion To Host Enchanted Nightmare The leaves are changing, and the rut season is beginning to wind down. ’Tis the season we all love in Estes Park.

Halloween has always been a very special time in this mountain community.

While the town recently announced traditional festivities downtown have been granted a variance by Larimer County and will continue on Halloween night (with COVID restrictions in place), there’s another opportunity just waiting to help you bring to life all of those ghoulish desires that have been building within since last October.

This Halloween will look different from years past, but there will be at least one place where Estes Park residents can get their fill of ghouls, goblins, and other witchy experiences. Longtime resident Jenn Bass, of Pirate Face Productions, has joined with Circle 119 American Legion to present spellbinding evenings every night the last three weekends in October.

In the past, Bass has been involved not only with mystery dinner theatres in town, but also with the Legion’s annual haunted house. Due to COVID, this year she’s shifted gears. Jenn’s creative background is lengthy and includes television production, film, and commercials, but she openly admits her heart has always revolved around live theater.

With the Town’s Halloween plans in limbo until just this week, the American Legion tabled its plans to build a haunted house. Instead, it contacted Bass to create something fun and entertaining for the community that would also raise money to support local veterans.

The result of the collaboration is this year’s “Enchanted Nightmare.” This multi-evening event will feature estab-

lished local talent and introduce many new faces. Each night’s performance will be highlighted by entertaining original skits and music. The brave at heart will also have an opportunity to have their personal Tarot cards read during the evening’s festivities. All proceeds from the event will benefit local veterans and support the day-to-day operations of Legion 119.

The evening’s entertainment will be a mix of both fun and scary interludes, with different tiers of ticket prices. Several nights will include appetizers, cocktails and soft drinks only, but every Saturday will feature a fabulous multi-course meal course meal prepared by chef Rich Beirchner.

Taking the occasion one step further, Halloween night will feature a giant “Monster Bash.” Following dinner and the show there will be live music by the band Gasping for Sparrows and a not-tomiss costume contest. Halloween night’s entertainment will also feature the talented Lisa Young who has been featured in Westword.

Some of the local talent contributing to this year’s show include Jason and Shilo Van Tatenhove, Craig Carrico, and Chris Parson. Abbey Coffman will serve as stage manager. Bass stresses that full COVID guidelines will be enforced including symptom and temperature checks every night for both audience, and cast.

Due to COVID guidelines, tickets will be sold by the table in pairs of two, four, or six. They may be purchased at the American Legion’s website: www.esteslegion.org. See you there, but don’t forget to be in costume.

On September 28 at 4:28 p.m. police contacted an 18 year old female driver from Estes Park in the 100 block of Wiest Dr. after a motor vehicle accident. On scene they issued a citation to her for unsafe backing and driving without a drivers license.

On September 28 at 11:20 p.m. police contacted a 37 year old male from Estes Park in the 300 block of East Wonderview Ave. The male was arrested on a warrant out of Lakewood Police Dept. for failure to appear on a harassment charge. He was released from EPPD with a new appearance bond.

On October 11 at 2:07 p.m. police ar-

rested a 48 year old male from Estes Park in the 400 block of South St Vrain Ave. The male was wanted on a warrant out of Adams County Sheriff ’s Office for failure to appear on a DUI charge. In addition, EPPD officers issued him a citation for driving while license revoked. Because of COVID, Adams County Sheriff ’s Office instructed EPPD officers to release Mr. Brown with the warrant and to instruct him to turn himself in at the ACSO to take care of the warrant.

The charge(s) are merely an accusation and the defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.

Larimer County COVID-19 Cases Rise Again Larimer County Public Health has started to see a rise in COVID-19 cases in the county, much like is being seen across Colorado. While cases have continued to rise across all age ranges, there has been a substantial increase in cases for those between the ages of 18-24.

Colorado’s dial framework standardizes different levels of "openness" for counties.

Currently, Larimer County is in the Level 1 phase. The increase in COVID-19 cases jeopardizes the Level 1 status. A move to the Level 2 phase could lead to more restrictions for businesses in Larimer County. Larimer County has been open more than the rest of the state due to a variance that way approved in May. A move to Level 2 could potentially impact our restaurants and breweries, places of worship, gyms, and public gathering sizes. It is always the hope of Larimer County Public Health that there is no roll back and that businesses are not closed again in Larimer County, but the move to Level 2 would require LCDHE to limit business capacity levels.

Face coverings, social distancing, handwashing and frequent cleaning all help slow the spread of the virus in the commu-

nity. Recently, residents have become less cautious, and may not be following the guidance in Larimer County. Cases have continued to rise to reflect that.

“Larimer County residents have worked hard to maintain a lower case rate and as a result have reduced illness and death,” said Tom Gonzales public health director.

“However, we can’t let our guard down. I understand we are all tired of these restrictions, but lowering our guard may lead to more illness and further rollbacks for our businesses.”

Larimer County has three weeks to reverse the trend of increasing cases, or the phase of reopening could be moved to the more restrictive Level 2. Public Health can’t do this alone. It takes community partners, municipalities, business owners and residents to step up the response to COVID-19 and take this seriously.

Information about COVID-19 is constantly changing, and the public health response adjusts as more is learned about this virus. While there is plenty of news and media information available, LCDHE is encouraging Larimer County residents to view the latest credible information on COVID-19 at www.larimer.org/coronavirus or www.CDC.gov/coronavirus. Estes Park Museum Gallery To Re-Open With Limited Hours While the Estes Park Museum Gallery has been closed since mid-March due to COVID-19 concerns, the gallery will reopen on Thursday, October 15, 2020.

Gallery hours will be limited to Thursday - Saturday, 10:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m.

Some changes will include limiting the number of visitors to 10 at a time, encouraging social distancing, following appropriate cleaning/sanitizing schedules, and ensuring the wearing of masks.

Staff would like to give a big thanks to the gallery hosts and shop volunteers who make it possible to resume limited gallery hours.

The Estes Park Museum was able to begin virtual programming in August of 2020. There have been two programs, another planned for October 17, 2020, and more virtual programming coming this fall and winter. Stay up-to-date with museum programs and happenings on the Estes Park Museum website. While the Museum gallery has been closed to the public, staff has been able to diligently clean, rehouse, and re-catalogue items from the collection of over 30,000 locally significant artifacts; oversee a current State grant to enhance the Birch Ruins and Cabin at the Centennial Open Space at Knoll-Willows; collaborate with the Estes Valley Library to continue digitizing local newspapers through 1965

Old Fall River Road Will Remain Open To Vehicles Until Further Notice, Chapin Pass Trailhead Closes Again Due to access for fire personnel, Old Fall River Road in Rocky Mountain National Park will remain open to vehicles until further notice. The road reopened on September 30, after being closed to vehicles since September 5, due to the Cameron Peak Fire.

Beginning in 2016, Old Fall River Road has been closed the first Monday in October for the season to vehicles. After winterization road maintenance occurs, the road reopens to bicyclists and pedestrians until December 1, when it reverts to winter trail status.

Fire vehicles will continue to use Old Fall River Road. For safety reasons, park managers will delay the exclusive use by cyclists and pedestrians and will keep the road open to vehicles until further notice.

In an abundance of caution, the trailhead at Chapin Pass has closed again due to forecast weather conditions on the Cameron Peak Fire.

Old Fall River Road was built between 1913 and 1920. It is an unpaved road which travels from Endovalley Picnic Area to above treeline at Fall River Pass, following the steep slope of Mount Chapin’s south face. Due to the winding, narrow nature of the road, the scenic 9.4mile route leading to Trail Ridge Road is one-way only. Vehicles over 25 feet and vehicles pulling trailers are prohibited on the road.

Estes Park Woman’s Club To Hold October Zoom Meeting Estes Park Woman’s Club October Zoom Meeting will be at 12 Noon on Wednesday, October 14, 2020. Each member will receive a Zoom invite with the meeting ID number. Gail Beaton will be the speaker. A native of western Massachusetts, she was fortunate to move with her family to Colorado when she was eight years old. She likes to say that we came via The Mayflower. Of course that would be the Mayflower Moving Company! She has a BS in education from the University of Colorado Boulder which led to a teaching career of over thirty years in elementary, middle, and high schools, and at two community colleges. Yes, She has stories!

She earned two master's degrees -- one in United States History and one in Public History-from University of Colorado

Denver.

Upon retirement from teaching she indulged in several long trips with my mother and worked on my first book, Colorado Women: A History. The past eight years Gail has been researching and writing my second book, Colorado Women in World War II. Two long hiking trips in Ireland (April 2017 and April 2018) were welcome hiatuses from reading microfilmed newspapers and poring through books and archival material. She loves researching but microfilm reading is blinding and sitting long stretches of time is exhausting. Fifteen to twenty mile hikes from bed and breakfast to bed and breakfast in the Irish countryside was restorative!

Doug Mann Makes His Debut As An Author By: Rita DuChateau Many area residents know Doug Mann as a nonprofit administrator, ordained minister, speaker, educator, traveler and Rotarian. Add author to that list, as Mann’s Jericho March, was published on Sept. 28. It Doug Mann chronicles his personal faith journey.

Mann, a Pinewood Springs resident, has worked in nonprofit management with Nehemiah Gateway USA and is currently Director of Marketplace Missions and Alpha Relief at Global Advance, Inc. A member of The Rotary Club of Estes Park, he served as its president in 2019-20.

In Jericho March, Mann chronicles his humanitarian work in some of the world’s most dangerous locales, including Africa, Asia, Eastern Europe and The Balkans.

Mann’s desire to share his story with his three adult children prompted him to write the book. Once into the process, he saw the possibility that a wider audience might find his story interesting.

“My kids have always known about our travels and adventures, as they’ve lived some of them with us, but I wanted to write my experiences down so that they would get the big picture as to what was going on with their parents during those early years of their lives,” Mann said.

As Covid-19 advanced, Mann’s international travel to Pakistan, Croatia, Ecuador and Uganda for Global Advance was canceled, giving him more time to focus on compiling notes and crafting his book.

While he enjoys writing, Mann notes that the yearlong process of writing this book was more difficult than he anticipated.

“I had been challenged for years by a work colleague to write a book detailing my adventures up to this point in life, but I have always been reluctant to do so,” Mann said. “In November of this past year (2019) I started looking over notes that I had taken over the years of events that had transpired during my journeys. I realized that it was now or never if I wanted to actually write this book.”

Mann credits three professional editors for polishing his writing, but one of them, his wife Michelle, “was outstanding.”

I may be a little slow here, but I just learned a new word that we really need right now. When we talk during this time of masked communication, we sound like we’ve shoved 10 Jet-Puffed marshmallows in our mouths all at once. This does not make for good conversation. We need an alternate way to express ourselves while remaining masked —the key to protecting our own health and the health of others. That’s why this new word is so important. The word is smize and it means to smile with your eyes.

(Model Tyra Banks coined the word smize in 2009 on the television show American’s Next Top Model. Since then the word has made it into many current dictionaries.)

Have you ever headed to the checkout lane at the grocery store and gotten there at the same time as someone else? You probably smiled as if to signal, “go ahead, you can get in line ahead of me. ” But from six feet away, the other person couldn’t tell that you were smiling behind your mask. They thought you were sneering and assumed you were thinking, “Hey you! I was here first! Get in the back of the line! ” Ergo, they stormed off to a different line and left you feeling like you just broke off your first romantic relationship. (This scene is a serious breech of grocery store protocol. When someone offers cuts in the check-out line, it’s nice to honor their good deed. Besides, then your ice cream won’t melt before you get home. That’s something to smize about.)

How does one smize?

First, practice crinkling your eyes without moving your mouth. No squinting, no furrowing your brow, just lifting the corners of your eyes, and your lower lids, if you can. (I can’t do the lower lid thing.)

When I crinkle, I use the same facial muscles as when I wiggle my ears handsfree.

Don’t confuse crinkles for wrinkles. They are two different inkles. Wrinkles form over time and are permanent. Crinkles are temporary and show up—in a friendly way—when you smile or laugh.

So you need to work at drawing out the crinkles around your eyes without the assistance of a smile. Practice this in front of a mirror; just don’t hurt yourself.

The second part of a smize is to use cheek fat to push up your eyes into the smile zone. This is harder to do the older we get because as we age, our facial bones actually change shape. The angle of our lower jaw bone drops, the angle of our brow shifts so that our forehead forms frown lines and we get droopy eyelids.

(Zoom only magnifies these facial mutations.) Lastly, our eye sockets get bigger—broader and taller—so our cheek fat has two caverns to fall into, making it harder to push that plumpness up. (In addition, we develop thinner lips and longer noses and ears. It’s a fact that our noses and ears never stop growing. Ever.)

What this means is the older we are, the harder we have to work to get our cheek fat to push up our eyes into a friendly crinkle. But we can do it, with practice.

(Eating 10 Jet-Puffed marshmallows at once is an alternate method but I wouldn’t recommend it. Ten is too many.

Five works just fine.)

Lastly, think happy thoughts. This is the best part of all. Remember life before masks. Imagine hugs and celebrations and travel; singing and playing and belly laughs and kindness. Practice this step the most and and you will smize naturally.

Girl Scouts In Estes Park Need Your Help You should find the celebratory news release and photo separately in this paper, (page 18) and this additional piece is to piggy-pack on that celebration with a plea for help and support for Girl Scouts in Estes Park. Yes, there is one very active and vibrant Cadette troop, but there are no other existing troops for girls outside the 6 -8 grade levels.

Daisies are in grades K & 1, Brownies are in grades 2 & 3, Juniors are in grades 4 & 5, Seniors are in grades 9 & 10, and Ambassadors are in grades 11 & 12. So, we are looking for volunteers to help start troops for your favorite age of girls. It’s easy to become a leader or assistant leader. Girl Scouts of Colorado (GSCO) has vast resources for training and support, so that it’s really true that “You don’t have to do this alone.”

But, Girl Scouts is not canceled and the skills and connections girls gain through Girl Scouting are needed now more than ever. Because back-to-school nights have been virtual, our typical way of introducing

Girl Scouts to families has had to change.

We know that the number one reason girls join Girl Scouts is because a friend invited them, and the second top reason is because she heard of or saw a troop of Girl Scouts at her school. Typically, the start of the school year is our busiest time for new girls to join. But this year, we’ve seen 70% fewer sign-ups than usual. At the council level, we’ve invested in direct mail, digital advertising, and paid search, but what we’re lacking is the grassroots effort that is most successful – personal connection. This is where you come in.

You know that through Girl Scouts girls gain skills such as resiliency, compassion, and leadership. You also know that when times get tough, Girl Scouts rise to the challenge. Now is the time. We’ve adapted our programming to meet these unusual times and created a variety of ways to participate, so there is something for all girls and all family situations.

Hello there. Hope y’all are enjoying this beautiful fall weather and the golden aspen that we are surrounded by. I am really trying to enjoy them and the lovely pinecones that keep falling in my yard. I cannot seem to keep up with either as I constantly rake and pick up their abundant gifts. All I can think about as I work is an old song that begins: “The falling leaves drift by my window.” I wish that is what they would do… drift by and not drop by. Lexie came over the other day and helped me with the pinecones. We stopped at four bags. I think I will be magnanimous and let the birds and squirrels have the rest.

With fall comes recipes for pumpkin, apples and soup. Have you noticed that all the current food magazines have pumpkin or apple recipes? I was going to do a pasta recipe for this column, but then felt remiss not to be in the “swing of things.” I guess I will do the pasta next week. This little apple recipe goes well with a spiced pork tenderloin that I have fixed in the past.

Spiced Pork Tenderloin I use a 1 lb. tenderloin, sliced into 12 pieces. Season the pork well and sauté’ in a sprayed pan for about 3 minutes per side.

Season the pork with the following: ½ tsp. salt ¼ tsp. each of coriander and black pepper 1 1/8 tsp. each of cinnamon and grated nutmeg Sautéed Apples: 2 Tbs. butter 2 cups thinly sliced apples, unpeeled.

Braeburn or Gala apples 1/3 cup thinly sliced shallots, or very thinly sliced red onion 1/8 tsp salt 1/4 cup cider 1 tsp. fresh thyme leaves or ¼ dry leaves Melt butter in a pan and swirl to coat. Add apples, 1/3 cup shallots, and 1/8 tsp., salt; sauté’ 4 minutes or until apples start to turn brown. Add cider and cook 2 minutes or until apples are crisp, tender. Stir in thyme.

Serves 4. Hope you make both the pork tenderloin and apples and enjoy the dish.

Staying home as much as I have been doing is costing me a lot of money. Being in the house, I notice all the things that need to be done. I realized the carpet upstairs was looking shaggy (25 years old, but only used by company) so I had that replaced.

The trees, garden and bushes needed a redo; so I had that done. Now, I see that the south side windows need recaulking. Does it ever end?

We had our dream home built in 1995 so I guess this “old house” deserves some redoing. A few years ago, I did get a new granite and range top. And of course, inside and outside have been repainted or stained as needed or wanted. Little things have been done and new appliances have been bought but I’ve never thought of caulking windows. Ok, now to find workers...that is not an easy task here in Estes. Luckily, I do have a reliable painter when and if he has time.

”Hoodoo”: October’s Family Book Club And Read-Along Families are invited to a shared reading and discussion opportunity through the library’s next Family Book Club and Read-Along, hosted on Zoom. This month’s featured book is “Hoodoo” by Ronald L. Smith, a spooky story just in time for Halloween.

Twelve-year-old Hoodoo Hatcher was born into a family with a rich tradition of practicing folk magic, or “hoodoo,” as most people call it. Despite his name, he can’t seem to cast a simple spell. Then a mysterious man called the Stranger comes to town, and only Hoodoo can defeat him. Set amid the

swamps, red soil and sweltering heat of a small Alabama town in the 1930s, “Hoodoo” is infused creepiness, leavened with gentle humor.

Children’s Librarian Chase Chauffe will present a live three-part Read-Along of “Hoodoo” on October 19, 21, and 23 at 1:30 p.m. Participants are then invited to join the book discussion on Saturday, October 24 from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. All events are online via Zoom.

2020 offers all of us the opportunity to celebrate not only the passage of the 19th Amendment but also the achievements of women over that last 100 years. Celebrations are planned nation-wide, in every state and in local communities. A number of local organizations and community leaders, under the leadership of Jean McGuire, have formed a committee to coordinate the local celebration under the title, “100 Years: A Celebration of Women.” As a part of the festivities, we plan to collect stories about Estes Valley women in the form of paragraphs. Submission period: now through the end of November. Maximum length: 200 words, A story about any woman with a connection to Estes Park. These paragraphs will be collected by the Estes Valley Library. The Story Of Sue Thomas By: Dave Thomas

From a two-room elementary school in Knife River, Minnesota, to graduating from St. Luke’s School of Nursing in Duluth, Sue (Alreck) Thomas came to her first RN job in 1978 at Elizabeth Knutsson Memorial Hospital (now Estes Park Health), working there for 10 years.

In 1987, she started commuting to Boulder Community Hospital, helping to save many lives in that hospital’s busy emergency department over the next 14 years. Meanwhile, she was volunteering at First Baptist Church (now Mountain View Bible Fellowship) as a Sunday School teacher and youth worker, and later was a volunteer youth leader at Presbyterian Community Church of the Rockies.

For about 15 years, Sue and nurse Linda Coleman (for whom Sue had

served as student preceptor in 1980) lovingly cared for their friend, Kathy O’Connor, who had a rare lung disease and became one of Colorado’s first lung transplant patients, living until 2005. They gave her intravenous medications regularly, and even took her to California on AMTRAK. For their volunteer efforts with Kathy, Sue and Linda were recognized in the “9 Who Care” awards on 9News. Sue left the medical field for 11 plus years to work alongside her husband with Presbyterian Church (USA), serving in México.

Returning to Estes Park, Sue resumed her RN career and is currently a triage nurse in the physicians’ clinic at Estes Park Health. On December 17, 2019, Sue donated one of her kidneys to a recipient in her native state of Minnesota.

The Story Of Ruth Deffenbaugh By: Betty Anderson

Ruth Deffenbaugh was a driving force in Estes Park during her tenure as director from 1970-1980. She started as the sole employee with about 4 or 5 volunteers. She gradually created a paid staff and it operated as a professional team for library users.

Most worked part time for the minimum wage with no benefits other than the satisfaction of knowing they were performing quality service.

Over the years, but not necessarily at the same time, Lennie Bemiss, Cathy Moran, Sally Henninger, Peggy Komito, Elaine Goldberg, Sybil Barnes, Marty Schmidt and Betty Anderson were added to the payroll and served the public with professionalism and a personal touch. Volunteers such

as Jeanne Poulous, Myra McDaniel, and Jean Menning were valuable assets as well. Apologies to anyone not listed.

Ruth was the captain of this ship and everyone learned a lot under her tutelage. She did it with finesse and kindness while teaching the assistant librarians valuable lessons.

The little library in Bond Park was the center of learning and entertainment where speakers came to inform and entertain. One program was a showing of a silent film accompanied by Hazel Baldwin on the piano. Hazel had been the pianist for silent films at the Park Theater as a young woman.

The Estes Park Library today owes much to Ruth and her loyal staff of women during the 1970s.

Allenspark Hilltop Guild Hosts Rummage Sale This Saturday, October 10

Looking for something fun to do this Saturday that embraces safety standards during COVID-19? Head to the Rummage Sale this Saturday, Oct. 10 from 10 a. m.-1 p. m. at The Kelley House in Allenspark, which is home to The Hilltop Guild.

Hilltop Guild President Donna Squyres said, “Even though COVID19 restricts our activities, we still want to provide funding for scholarships, special projects, building maintenance and fundraising for the Fire Department in Allenspark. That’s why we’re having the Rummage Sale.”

You’ll be able to find pre-loved items at extremely low prices. “In some instances, there won’t even be a price tag.

tion,” said Squyres. ”You’ll find toys, collectibles, White Elephant items and more.”

The Hilltop Guild is a productive and creative association of members who create handmade crafts throughout the year, including knit, crochet, woven and quilted items, homemade jellies, jewelry, artistic gourds, handmade stationary, photographs and crafts.

The Kelley House is located at 18720 Highway 7; fifteen miles from Lyons, and just 30 minutes south of Estes Park on Highway 7.

The Hilltop Guild also sells its weavings, crafts and other items at The Old Gallery in Allenspark year round, which is open from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. on

Saturdays and Sundays.

“We’re thrilled that The Old Gallery has agreed to partner with us in this way,” said Squyres.

“If you haven’t been there, you should stop by on Saturday as well and see the beautiful works of art by 20 local and regional artists for sale. There’s even a Rocky Mountain Conservancy Store in The Old Gallery, with maps, great souvenirs and more.”

The Hilltop Guild was founded in the late 1940s. Its’ goal is to return the fruits of the members’ labors to areas of need in the greater Allenspark area and beyond.

The group meets weekly throughout the year to learn new skills and create items to be sold. The Kelley House has a Loom Room with eight floor looms.

“Our weavers create gorgeous items that will be for sale, including unique placemats, table runners, scarves and more,” said Squyres.

The group also maintains the site of the historic Allen cabin, the original homestead in Allenspark and the Bunce School, a Historic Designation from the State of Colorado and County of Boulder, which is listed on the National Historic Register. It is one of two rural log schoolhouses remaining in Boulder County and is located near the Kelley House.

It’s an opportunity for the 2,000 public power providers around the country and the communities they serve to celebrate the value of community-owned electrical service. Both Estes Park Power and Communications (the distribution utility) and Platte River Power Authority (wholesale power provider) are not-forprofit, community-owned utilities that are committed to the people we serve.

Being community-owned means we’re able to respond to your needs and adapt quickly to unplanned situations. In the late 1960s, when the federal government notified Estes Park, Fort Collins, Longmont and Loveland that federal hydropower supplies would be limited in the future, the four communities joined together to form the Platte River Power Authority. The “Via Dolorosa” path meanders through the ‘stations of the cross’ – each stop describing the sequence of Jesus’ last walk to the cross. Angels watch over the beautiful columbarium dispersed among the natural landscape. The views from this peaceful path are impressive; sighting nearby mountain peaks, Dollar Lake, and the surrounding meadows.

The “Wall of Perpetual Memory” supports your final steps as well as bordering the front parking area. It now includes plaques blessing special people in memorials. People who have done gracious deeds like Father Jack

Ford (who led St. Francis parish through priest transitions twice), and other Christians who have done spiritual deeds or loved ones who have gone to face God in glory at heaven’s gate. This wall was dedicated Sunday, Sept. 27th after the mass service.

These metal plaques each contain three lines: the name or names of the person(s) being blessed; Thank you or “In Loving Memory;” and then “St. Francis Church.” The cost is $150 each plaque and your memorial tribute will last forever. There is also a CD available for $15 focusing on the Stations of the Cross and showing “God in Nature” here in the Rockies.

The quaint chapel is open any time to allow visitors the opportunity to pray and feel the presence of God. It was designed by Father Bill Wells (RIP) to be a replica of Italy’s century old St. Francis of Assisi Church.

The Southern Rocky Mountains are known for their jagged peaks, frigid lakes, and abundant wildlife. While many modern residents view the alpine country as wilderness and untrammeled by humanity, archaeological research provides a different narrative. Over 2000 prehistoric sites are known from Colorado at elevations greater than 10,000 feet. Rather than suggesting the mountains as a barrier, this instead demonstrates that the highlands played a significant role within the lives of ancient Native Americans. For instance, communal hunting of large game such as bighorn sheep and elk was a major pursuit in the fall of the year, reflected in "game drives" containing v-shaped rock walls that funneled prey towards hunters in shooting blinds. In this presentation, Dr. LaBelle provides an overview of the alpine archaeology of Colorado, focusing on hunting sites and other important places, proposing reasons

for their construction and use over millennia, and arguing for the importance of these places to the peoples of the past as well as today.

Dr. Jason LaBelle is the Director of the Center for Mountain and Plains Archaeology and an Associate Professor of Anthropology at Colorado State University in Fort Collins. His research interests include grassland and mountain ecology, hunter-gatherer site structure, communal hunting, hearth cooking, and the history of archaeology. His current fieldwork focuses on the foothills and mountains of Northern Colorado, but past fieldwork has taken him across the Great Plains and Rocky Mountains spanning from New Mexico to Montana. Jason served as the (past) President of the Colorado Archaeological Society, the Colorado Council of Professional Archaeologists, and on the Board of Directors for the Plains Anthropological Society. He has published articles in journals such as Quaternary International, American Antiquity, Plains Anthropologist, and North American Archaeologist, in addition to book chapters and technical reports in the academic and contract realms. His research efforts are supported in part by the Jim and Audrey Benedict Fund for Mountain Archaeology, an endowment established in 2011 to support alpine archaeology in the Southern Rocky Mountains. Jason was awarded the Stephen H. Hart award from History Colorado for his statewide efforts in archaeological research and public education.

Girl Scouts Celebrate Bridging To Cadettes

THE AWESOME POWER OF A CLEAR CONSCIENCE As we all know here in Estes Park we get lots of visitors at church services…in normal times. However, this visitor was rather unique. He was under the influence of a mood-altering drug, possibly meth, when he arrived at the building and was greeted by my co-minister.

He had two requests: that Gabe ‘return some items that I’ve stolen’ and then, ‘I want to be baptized’. About that time two of my sons, both of whom are law enforcement officers in the Denver area, arrived with my wife and me at the building. Gabe was happy to see them, knowing that ‘they would know what to do’. They did. One visited with our guest while the other notified our very capable Estes Police Department and several officers came out and took the man into custody to ‘sort out’ his situation. We are hoping to follow up with the man and see what help we can provide in the future.

The reason I relate this story is that it so illustrates the importance of a person’s conscience in both the committing of and recovery from wrongdoing. A properly functioning, listened-to conscience will tend to forestall the committing of evil deeds, and result in people admitting and accepting responsibility when they do. Few Things are so saddening as to see people in society who can commit even heinous crimes with little remorse. We wonder how that could happen and then realize that it began with the failure to accept responsibility and resulting repercussions for lesser things committed in former days. Now they are ‘hardened’ and apt to do almost anything that serves them at the moment. We try to watch out for and avoid such people. But the reason for my writing is to remind us to continue to monitor our own conscience and heed its urgings.

The Bible reminds us that we have one of four levels of conscience: a ‘good’ conscience (sensitive and pure); an ‘untrained’ conscience (weak and yields easily); a ‘soiled’ conscience (defiled by sin and lacking judgment); and a ‘seared’ conscience (so hardened it will sin without feeling wrong). The Bible gives us examples of each. Paul, an example of the first, testified that he ‘had lived in good conscience all his life’. David was an example of the next. After this ‘man after God’s own heart’ sinned with another man’s wife, he was wracked with guilt and remorse. He wrote: “When I kept silent about my sin, my body wasted away, groaning all day long…my vitality was drained away.” Paul later refers to people who show the third level: “Their minds and consciences are corrupted. They claim to know God, but by their works they deny Him.” A good example of the ‘seared’ conscience was Pharaoh in the days of Moses. Over and over he ‘hardened’ his heart, resisting God’s will and finally destroying him So, where are we? Can we say, with Paul, “I’ve lived before God in all good conscience until this day?” I hope that is true. However, most of us can recall baggage we’ve carried with us for some deeds in our past. These may be deeds of commission, like a young college student who had, when a young boy, thrown a rock at a train. Sadly the rock struck the dining car, shattering a window by a table, and he told me, ‘I know I saw blood.’ But then the train was gone and he had carried immense guilt ever since. We talked about the incident and God’s grace and forgiveness, reflecting on David’s words… ’blessed is he whose transgression is forgiven, and whose sin is covered.’…and prayed for such forgiveness. And he began to live life like such a ‘forgiven’ one. We can, too, if we will listen to a sensitive conscience, perhaps share our ‘failure’ with someone we trust, and ask God’s forgiveness and strength to put that behind us and do better in the future. Perhaps ours was a sin of omission…something we should have done and failed to do, impacting our life or that of another. That needs repentance and forgiveness, too. Listen to your conscience, pray for forgiveness and begin to live joyfully again.

On a perfect fall afternoon at Stanley Park with a backdrop of clouds, sun, and a herd of elk, family and friends gathered to help Troop 70264 celebrate the bridging of four Junior Girl Scouts to the next program level of Cadettes.

Cadettes are in grades six through eight and are very capably led by leaders Christine Guy and Amanda Hoskins.

This ceremony celebrated two whole years of activities, fun, and community service for a very committed group of girls who have their futures clearly in mind. The current world situation has done nothing to quench their accomplishments or douse their enthusiasm for Girl Scouting with a strong support of all their families. Yes, they sold cookies in the spring, getting that sale accomplishment just before schools closed and their summer was changed from in-person trips and activities to on-line and special group projects. Yes, they are selling Fall Products right now. Check in with these girls if they haven’t contacted you yet.

Help me recognize each girl individually for her accomplishments.

Angelina Darnell: 18 badges, one Journey and her Bronze Award. Angelina reports that First Aid was her favorite badge and that their visit to the Denver Zoo was her favorite activity.

Haven Gustad: 16 badges, one Journey and her Bronze Award. Haven says that Playing the Past was her favorite badge because it let them visit the History Center in Loveland, dress up in period uniforms and learn to relate to Girl Scouts from past years. Her favorite activity was the glassblowing workshop with local artists.

Sarah Hoskins: 22 badges, two Journeys and her Bronze Award. Sarah loves the out-of-doors and naturally the Camping badge was her favorite.

She loves Meadow Mountain Ranch and can have a good time “even if it’s snowing,” according to Sarah. Add sledding and sand surfing at the Great Sand Dunes and you can see where her optimistic outlook comes from. She also reports that horseback riding was another favorite activity.

Paige Adams: 13 badges, one Journey and her Bronze Award. She was not present at the ceremony to tell us about her favorite badges and activities, but she’s an active Cadette now by virtue of meeting requirements for advance-

ment through program levels.

Other girls expressed their love for Girl Scout program with a long list of accomplishments even through the summer program restriction due to COVID. “Breathe” is a favorite Journey program, focusing on air pollution, environmental issues and the relationship between trees and the air we breathe. “Animal Helpers” including therapy dogs, horses, dolphins and even rats spark inspiration in girls to learn more about how training and national programs match people with their creature friends.

A field trip to the Noosa Yogurt Factory allowed the girls to see the farm where the special organically-fed cows give their milk. They watched the very “happy cows” ride the “Cowasell,” the automated system that harvests the milk daily without ever being touched.

The Community Garden also allowed this troop to be involved this summer in planning, planting, cultivating and harvesting Plot #66. Perennials include a large amount of mint, sage, chives, strawberries and rhubarb. Deciding to specialize in plants to attract pollinators, the girl added Blanket Flowers, Marigolds, sunflowers, a blueberry bush and several other perennials.

Even a little bee house was built.

The girls are very quick to relate their future plans to travel when the situation in the world allows it. The financial profits from the past two years of cookie and product sales are safely stored away in the bank to help support their travel plans. In Cadette Girl Scouts the girls will make all the decisions and plans, including research of places to go, schedule for the trip and, of course, all financial and budgetary activities. They first would like to travel through Colorado by train, and ultimately set their sights on an international trip to Scotland.

Congratulations to all the girls who bridged as well as to those who will continue with the troop. Thanks to all the leaders and family support systems who make this group so special. This week’s featured animal is the American robin. Several years back, I was in eastern Colorado in a blind to photograph prairie chickens. There was a group in the blind from the United Kingdom as well and they were participating in a bird tour. We all wound up at the same ranch after the morning outing for breakfast. As we walked out to the breakfast table, the British group was enthralled with a bird on the ground. It turned out to be an American robin that caught their attention. Something so com-

mon here in the U.S. made them squeal with glee. Here are a few fun facts about a bird that signifies spring for many.

1. Why were the Brits so fascinated by the American robin? It looks very similar to their national bird, the European robin. These two robins, however, are not related.

Pine Cone/Pine Needle Drop-off Event By: The Estes Valley Watershed Coalition Do you remember that blanket of pollen that descended on the Estes Valley in June of 2018? Seems like an eternity ago, but that pollen helped create an amazing pine cone crop last summer. For almost a year, the red-crossbills and red-breasted nuthatches hung out in the valley and ate the seeds. And while I’m not expert, I think the mice thrived on all those pine seeds, too.

Now, those cones are drying up and gracing the forest floor. Pine cones are beautiful and a vital part of the eco-system. They are also filled with sap, and if you ever need help starting a fire, they make excellent kindling (just be careful since they will coat the inside of your flue with creosote).

So, do you have kindling surrounding your house? Is your house just a fire waiting to ignite? With the Cameron Peak fire still burning, now is the time to prepare for the next wildfire in the Estes Valley. Firefighters are good at putting out house fires, but when a wildfire roars down the valley, there is little they can do to stop it.

By creating a defensible space around your home, you can reduce the chances that a spark will ignite and that the fire spreads. Creating a defensible space around your home is the best thing you can do to help firefighters. Without it, they may be forced to “landscape” your property with heavy equipment in the heat of the moment.

One way to defend your home from wildfire is to clear dead or dry vegetation from

the area 30 feet around your home and structures. Low hanging branches, weeds, pine cones and pine needles all serve as kindling just waiting for a spark. The Estes Valley Watershed Coalition (www.EVWatershed.org) is making it easy to dispose of your pine cones and pine needles by hosting a Pine Cone & Pine Needle drop off event on Saturday October 17th, 2020 from 10 a.m. – 1 p.m. at 1191 Woodstock Dr., Estes Park, CO, 80517 (behind Estes Park Lumber).

Please note the change in date and bag your pine cones and needles (paper yard waste bags preferred).

Representatives from the Estes Valley Watershed will have information available about what they do, along with handouts about how to make a defensible space around your property. We ask that you please wear a mask and follow Larimer County guidelines for distancing. Please come early because the event is over when the bins are full.

If you can’t make the event, or wish to drop off more materials, like slash, logs, chunk or decayed wood, pine cones, pine needles, leaves and even noxious weeds, you can drop them off at the Meeker Park Sort Yard.

A Plea For Help

By: Scott Rashid, Director of Colorado Avian Research and Rehabilitation Institute, CARRI I have been rehabilitating injured and orphaned birds in Estes Park for more than 20 years. It is a very challenging, and rewarding occupation. The rewarding part is when a bird can be released back to the wild. The challenging part is dealing with people.

What I mean by dealing with people is very simple. Let me tell you a few short stories. A few weeks ago, I received a call from a woman who lives on Giant Track Road. My home phone rang about 4:00

p.m. and the message on my home phone answering machine states that if you have found an injured bird to please call my cell number.

This person didn’t bother calling my cell number, but rather hung up and called again (also not leaving a message), then called a third time without leaving a message, or calling my cell phone (which I had on me). The fourth time the phone rang, I answered it.

The woman on the other end explained that she had an injured owl. I presumed the owl was an injured Northern Pygmy-Owl as they are active during the day and therefore often get injured during daylight hours.

A short time later, I arrived at the woman’s house to find an injured Longeared Owl in the grass near her driveway. (Long-eared Owls are extremely nocturnal and are not found out during the day.) I asked how long the bird had been injured and she replied that she had found the bird several hours earlier, but had to spend the day with her granddaughter. The bird had been on the ground for at least eight hours be-

fore she called. I was absolutely infuriated, but kept my cool because her granddaughter was nearby and I didn’t want to upset the little girl; as it was not her fault that her grandmother didn’t care about this poor bird. That bird had a badly broken wing and had to be euthanized. Had I had gotten the bird at 8:00 a.m. or earlier, when she found the bird originally; who knows what the bird’s prognosis would have been. I wonder if that lady would have waited eight hours to call the doctor had her granddaughter had gotten hurt?

Last week I got a call from a woman who told me that she had found a very large owl that was injured and couldn’t fly. After explaining where she and the bird were located, I left immediatly. I identified the bird as a Great Horned Owl. As with the above mentioned woman, this woman told me that she found the owl at about 8:00 a.m., but didn’t decide to call me until 2:15 p.m.

As with the above mentioned bird, this owl had a badly broken wing and sadly had to be euthanized as well. Great Horned Owls do not do well on the ground and often thrash around when there. Again, this bird may have been able to be healed if it was brought my attention sooner.

Last year, I got a call about 5:00 p.m. from a woman who lives in Little Valley.

She told me that she had found an in-

jured small owl on the road. She had originally found the bird on her way to work about 7:45 a.m., but didn’t think to call me until she got home, almost 10 hours later.

That bird ended up having a badly broken wing that did not heal properly and it also lost an eye. That poor bird was stranded on the road in the cold way too long.

A few years ago, I got a call from a woman who had an injured American Kestrel that had hit her window. The poor bird had been lying on her deck all afternoon, until it began to rain. The injured bird made its way under the person’s eve, to get out of the rain. At that time the woman decided to call me. That bird also died. I have dozens of stories such as these.

My plea is simple! When you find an injured bird, please call immediately, don’t hesitate. We are all here to help and you won’t bother us. The bird’s life is important, and it’s important the bird doesn’t suffer. You can call the police department, any vet in the area, or my home number at 970-577-1794.

Bird rehabilitation is hard enough, both emotionally and financially. Taking care of a single bird can often take weeks and cost hundreds of dollars. Multiply that by the dozens of birds that I get in each year and it takes its toll. Please call.

EVICS Offers Childcare Scholarships It takes a community, an Estes Valley community, to raise a child. EVICS provides programs and services to support families and children here in the Estes Valley. EVICS Childcare Scholarship Fund financially assists parents looking for and sustaining employment. This program stemmed from the paradox that many parents face: returning to work to support their family, but unable to afford the high expense of childcare.

Due to the COVID pandemic, the need for affordable childcare heightened. EVICS approved scholarships for 23 children in 19 families over the past six months. In 2020, over $60,000 in childcare scholarships have been awarded. EVICS develops a trusting,

familiar network to support and strengthen families as they address the challenges in their life.

Congratulations to Kadynce Shotts, the Estes Park High School Student of the Week for October 9, 2020.

School activities Kadynce enjoys is being a member of the soccer team where she earned her varsity letter her freshman year. She has maintained a GPA above 4.0 both freshman and sophomore year and received a high SAT score. Outside of school, writing is a favorite activity and last year, she did an independent study where she wrote and edited her own action-adventure novel titled, “Two Crimson Suns.” It 11th is still in the drafting phase, but she hopes to publish it soon.

Her favorite quote is, “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me” from Philippians 4:13. She said, “This quote reminds me that I’m never alone in any struggle.”

Kadynce Shotts Grade After high school Kadynce says she might go to college, she might not, but she definitely knows she wants to become a professional published author of fiction novels for young adults.

A couple of weeks ago Facebook launched what it called “Daughter Day.” It was a promotion designed to encourage mothers and fathers to share thoughts and pictures of their daughters. While I enjoyed seeing all of the posts, the event was something we couldn’t take part in since our kids are both boys. I do, however, have a stellar daughter-in-law who amazes me more and more every day.

After his high school graduation, our son, Thad, was awarded a fullride scholarship by a small but wellknown liberal arts college in Iowa.

As young men will do at that stage in their lives, he began dating a girl who was attending Luther College located less than two hours away. Enamored, he decided to transfer to Luther for his sophomore year.

Sadly, that meant forfeiting the scholarship he’d been given. And naturally, he

and the girl broke up shortly thereafter. While it would be easy to find fault in his decision to transfer, I can’t be critical because it was at Luther where he met Kate.

They’ve been together ever since—more than two decades—and have two fantastic children.

Kate recently posted a comment on Facebook that truly inspired me. She wrote: “In times of great uncertainty, we needed a refocus. We are fill-

With all of the challenges brought about by in-home learning and working remotely, the last thing most people would do would be to invite two energetic puppies into their world. But Kate jumped in with both feet. In a way it’s become a means to interject part of their pre-Pandemic lives into today’s world. They’ve fostered several dogs in the past and the experiences have been very rewarding, especially for our grandchildren. Kate and Thad actually continue to maintain a relationship with one of the adoptive families.

Luko frequently comes back to vacation with them when his “parents” are out of town.

At this point, Kate didn’t need to interject any additional responsibility into her daily life. Since the beginning of the Pandemic, like so many others she’s found herself juggling a multitude of tasks. In addition to being there to support Thad and serving as a home-based teacher for both a kindergartner and fourth grader, she’s been working remotely to fulfill her demanding managerial duties with a state agency.

Her day usually begins about 4 a.m. when their own elderly dog, Buster, de-

mands a trip outside followed by his breakfast. At that point why go back to bed? Kate admits that it’s just about the only quiet time she has during the day. A lot can be accomplished before the rest of the household begins to stir.

As for the puppies, I can’t think of a more well-rounded place for them to begin their lives. Frisco and Fletch are currently co-existing with cats, another dog, children, and adults. They have a large fenced yard to romp around in and even travel along to our grand-daughter’s soccer games. In the process of caring for the puppies, our grandchildren are learning so many lessons about life. Kate is also teaching them how to deal with the eventual reality of parting with Frisco and Fletch as they find their “forever homes.”

And my guess is that there will be more foster dogs in the future. But as Kate admits with a smile, they probably won’t be puppies. Puppies, she says, are a lot of work.

It comes as no surprise that this quote by Bradley Miller is one of Kate’s favorites: “Teaching a child not to step on a caterpillar is as valuable to the child as it is to the caterpillar.”

Ah, so true and we’re so lucky to have her in our lives.

All children and teens (age 5-17), living in the Estes Valley, are encouraged to practice vote in our elections. We call this the Junior Election. This endeavor gives students a chance to experience elections before they become the decision makers, to develop skills, and to nurture confidence. Capable, confident voters generally continue to participate in the democratic process.

Beginning Tuesday, Oct. 13, students vote at the Estes Valley Library, or at the Community Center. Some classrooms vote (electronically) at school. Ask the teacher. Junior election voting is over at 7 p.m., Tuesday, November 3. High school students generally vote the entire ballot, just like adults (30 questions).

Questions for middle school and elementary school children are simplified and limited in number, with age appropriate questions chosen for each level.

Of course, the youngest kids tend to agree with their parents, or with their teachers – if they have been able to discern what the teacher believes. Then there is an age of experimentation – when they vote against what they know their parents believe. And then, once they have proved that they can vote differently, most tend to discover that parents are pretty smart. They realize that parents have reasons why they vote and why they vote how they vote. They realize that they, too, can consider the options, and exercise a personal opinion.

Children, even very young children, are very smart. They are not jaded by politics. They have not yet decided what “team” they want to join (except for family). Therefore, they are free to think for themselves and to say what they believe.

Some adults find it surprising that children have very valid, very logical reasons for the way they “practice vote.” If asked what makes a good president, or mayor, or, for that matter, teacher, they almost consistently say that to “win” the person should be “nice.” Upon deeper quizzing, they say, not always in so many words, that they should “work and play well with others.” That is not a bad definition and goes a long way toward finding an elected official with a command of tact and diplomacy.

Teens, on the other hand, generally have a clear vision of what they would like a candidate to do. Whether it is to put in bike lanes (which has come up before the Town Trustees), or to resolve the medical coverage, or to find a resolution to the smoky skies, or to answer the questions that surround our disposal systems and production / use of energy

… they know, at least for now, what they want and they “vote” accordingly.

There are two important lessons here.

First lesson: our children are learning to read, research, study and think before making decisions – decisions based upon their own thoughts, their own goals, for themselves and for others. The other lesson? As they discuss the ins and outs of political candidates and issues, they are learning the ropes of diplomacy. They are learning to agree and disagree politely. They are learning to be “nice.”

There are many economic and ecological aspects to the coming election on the national, state, and county levels. Economic questions concerning livable minimum wage is on the ballot in some states, along with programs for sustaining housing, food, and medical coverage for those in need. Many states have ecological questions, concerning bans of certain plastics, modifications to local recycling programs, candidates who support or deny the existence of global warming and mankind’s responsibility to resolve that. Our County Commissioners do make the decisions about our local Estes Park recycling program (the Transfer Station and the Residential Recycling Center) and some important questions will arise in the near future.

Here, in Estes Park, we have 11 ballot issues to study, along with eight candidate contests and 11 questions on retention of judges. Amendment B concerns changes to property tax law to provide funds for our Special Districts – fire, hospital, library, school, and recreation.

Amendment C changes the rules for charitable bingo/raffle games. Amendment 76 requires United States Citizenship to vote in any election in Colorado.

Amendment 77 allows Central City, Blackhawk, and Cripple Creek to expand gaming offered. Proposition EE effects the tobacco product tax and expands the definition to include E-cigarettes and vaping. Proposition 113 maintains the Colorado General Assembly’s passage of the national popular vote. Proposition 114 concerns the reintroduction of gray wolves into Colorado. Proposition 115 changes abortion law. Proposition 116 reduces Colorado income tax. Proposition 117 tightens the TABOR regulations. Proposition 118 creates paid family leave. Take A Virtual Vacation At Estes Park's Wellness Cottage By: Barb Boyer Buck

“I am going to take you on a virtual vacation,” Brooke Claassen of Reverie Beauty and Bodywork told me as I walked in for my appointment at Estes Park's Wellness Cottage.

“We have virtual reality goggles with noise-canceling headphones… you're going to go to the beach at Wineglass Bay while you have your treatment!”

I was flabbergasted. Until that very moment, I had no idea what was to come because this was the Wellness Cottage's “surprise treatment,” first revealed at its Fall Fest on September 23.

I need a vacation - don't we all these days? Virtually traveling to the beautiful national park of Wineglass Bay, located in Tasmania, Australia, was paradise.

As soon as I was fitted with the VR goggles and headphones, I could see and hear the waves crashing onto the white sand of the crescent-shaped beach. I could see the seaweed in the shallows, swaying in the blue-green waves. I looked around and saw the surrounding darkly wooded hills. I looked up to see the party-cloudy sky.

I could see all the way out to the horizon.

Relaxing music played in the background. In the therapy room, the subtle scents of island vanilla, ylang ylang, and orange contributed to the immersive vacation by engaging another one of my senses.

Brooke's treatment consisted of lower leg scrubs, a seaweed wrap, and a lower leg massage with mango butter, coconut oil, reflexology, and hot towel wraps. After 45 minutes of this heavenly experience, I was relaxed and revitalized. “And now you've had a massage on the beach!” she said.

“Nobody feels safe to get on a plane right now,” said Melissa Roberts, who also runs her practice (Estes Park Acupuncture) from the Wellness Cottage located at 1140 Manford Avenue in Estes Park.

“I cancelled a couple of vacations myself,” she said. “But it's not really an escape in a negative way. Things like this help you go inward, reconnect with your body through deep relaxation. I think this is where you really heal. I'm moving more into incorporating the spa model into the medical model.”

Melissa plans to incorporate VR with her treatments as well. Other practitioners who operate out of the Wellness Cottage include massage therapist, Blair Brown, and Logan Morris who is dual licensed (like Brooke) in massage therapy and skincare.

If the beach isn't your thing, Claassen and Roberts have developed two other treatment “vacations” - spend your time on the moon looking down on the earth while getting paraffin dips on your hands and feet … or, visit the Northern Lights and have a warm/cold stone massage.

For those who don't desire touch, you can have essential oils paired with a guided meditation with your virtual vacation.

The VR set obtained by the Wellness Cottage is made specifically for spas and able to be completely disinfected between uses. I felt very safe with the sanitation and precautions taken at the Wellness Cottage for COVID19 mitigation.

At the Fall Fest open house event on September 23, most of the activity occurred outdoors with clients signing up for specific time slots for 15minute tastes of several services the Wellness Cottage offers. Products and artwork were also for sale in the lot outside the Cottage, and Rations Food Truck was on hand.

Once inside for my appointments I was reassured to see the rigid measures in place to address the pandemic.

I signed up for ear acupuncture, a back scrub & massage, another virtual vacation, a B12 shot, and a numerology reading. These are just a few of the services of what the Wellness Cottage offers.

“We are so grateful to Roaming Rations Food Truck for providing great food, the Rent All for supplying and setting up a tent, and to Christine Fitzgerald for helping us to run a safe and successful event. Thank you to everyone that attended and made this a community event” said Melissa.

Why do the virtual vacation twice in one week, you ask? All I can say is: these days, if we must have natural disasters, pandemics, and social unrest every day... why not?

Problems With Proposition 113 To The Editor: One of the unintended consequences of the use of the electoral college to elect the president is to fortify a twoparty system. It is very difficult for third and fourth parties to get any electoral votes. They must get a plurality of the votes in a state. Any move toward a popular vote weakens that barrier. Fringe parties would campaign for the prestige and influence that come from a substantial popular showing.

Many of us think that encouraging a third party would be a good thing, but it needs safeguards. In an election with multiple parties, the candidate with the “most” votes might have significantly less than half the votes. This candidate might be very unpopular with more than half the electorate This is not a fanciful problem. In the early Democratic Party primaries, with many candidates, Bernie Sanders got the most votes with percentages in the 20s and 30s. The press reported that he “won” these primaries. Had those states had winner-take-all primaries,

he would have gotten all their delegates. If no one dropped out, this might have continued. However, as candidates withdrew, Sanders continued to get percentages in the 30s, while 60% of the democrats voted against him.

There are several ways to solve the problem. There could be a run-off between the top two candidates; there could be an election with ranked choices; or there could be a floor percentage that the “winner” must attain—something like 47% of the vote.

Of these “solutions,” the only one available without a constitutional amendment is the requirement of a floor percentage. Nothing like this is included in Proposition 113. As I read it, it proposes a winner-take-all election with the winner needing a mere plurality of the vote. This might be better than the current system, where a candidate can be elected without even a plurality, but it is a flawed solution.

People should consider this in deciding how to vote.

Thoughts On The Estes Park Health Living Center To The Editor: After watching the EPH financial meeting this past week I was left with one basic question. Why the rush? As I suspected the finances were used as their excuse to shut down the Living Center. Much to the credit on both sides of the conversation at that meeting they were able to close with a possible solution that required the board to get together and discuss a delay in voting for the closing of the Living Center and explore a more plausible solution that could benefit the whole community.

As they move through this step it will require all of us to search within to see how we want this to end. As a community we can join together and decide to succumb to the boards wishes and lose the Living Center, or we can encourage the board to work with us to find an answer that takes care of both sides. This is not only about 28 elderly people being displaced. It means that in the future all of us who believed we would one day go to the Living Center would also be displaced to centers at least 50 miles away.

It has been said that down the road a new center would be built with more programs and more bells and whistles.

When? The cost to rebuild a new center will be more financially and certainly cost more emotionally. The option to work together to keep the Living Center going requires a team effort from the

board, as well as the community. No one says this would be easy to accomplish, but it is feasible if it is important enough to the families of Estes Park.

You may be reading this and feel like this problem is not yours. Right now maybe it is not, but in the future, do you know where you will go? Will your families be there with you as you transition or is that too far off? The logistics are complicated and require focus and a willingness to explore all options.

So, why the rush? If Estes Park is a magical place for tourists to visit, what is it for the people who actually live here? If we don’t join as a community to find a solution for our current elderly citizens, what will happen to our future elderly citizens? Will your loved ones and for that matter will you be sent away when you no longer matter?

We have a responsibility as a community to honor one another, whether it be the children, the middle aged or the elderly. Let’s set an example for our neighbors near and far that all people matter. Now is the time to be part of the solution. Send a message to the Estes Park Health board of directors, letting them know that if they insist on having an urgent care for our tourists, then they certainly can figure out a way to keep the Living Center for their community.

Regarding Estes Park Health Living Center To The Editor: We propose a 16 month moratorium on closing EPHLC. During this time EPH will: 1. secure an approval of a mill levy increase to cover the revenue required to operate the Living Center—the only response to this suggestion so far has been, without even trying it, to say it would be unlikely to pass; 2. make every effort to bring the census to a maximum capacity (38 residents); 3. EPH Administration will ensure that all costs charged to the Living Center are valid; 4. during this period of time the Bank of Colorado line of credit can be used to fund revenue shortfall.

1. The Medical Center has never lost an election to provide financial support to our hospital. a. The initial bond issue in 1973 for $900,000 ($5.4 million in today’s dollars) to build the hospital passed 995 to 266. b. The bond issue in 2007 for $27 million ($34 million in today’s dollars) to refurbish and built the addition passed 71% to 29%.

c. We pledge every effort to raising funds through the Foundation for support in the meantime.

2. There is no reason to believe that our demographic profile will change or follow the nation as a whole. To focus on national trends, rather than serving individuals (neighbors) in our community, is to fall into a trap of distancing ourselves from our local challenges and obligations.

3. The current capacity of the Living Center is stated to be 38. Now that Covid restrictions have been lifted to allow admissions, there should be no reason for it not to return to the 10 year average of 38.

4. Historically the indirect cost of operating various departments has been somewhat arbitrary.

5. A line of credit has already been secured.

In closing, we have not encountered any member of the community who has supported closure. The Medical Center has always relied upon tax support to operate. Rarely, if ever, has the hospital had an operating surplus.

A community-owned facility should be precisely that—operated to serve the needs of the community. The ability of our community members to come together to prevail over adversity and achieve extraordinary things has been evidenced from the beginning. In 1967 “500 tax paying residents signed a petition to form the Park Hospital District.”

It took lots of determination and hard work to finally build and open the hospital to patients in 1975. Can we do less?

Library Board Supports Amendment B (Repeal Of Gallagher Amendment) The Estes Valley Library District Board of Trustees unanimously adopted a Resolution of Support for Amendment B, which Colorado voters will be deciding upon this fall.

Amendment B would repeal what is known as the Gallagher Amendment.

As the Resolution states, without such a repeal, “the impact of this required Gallagher adjustment is expected to reduce the District’s tax revenues in 2021 and beyond, should the residential assessment rate decline from the present rate of 7.15% to 5.88% in 2021, as currently estimated

by the State of Colorado.”

The Resolution goes to state, “The Board further confirms that protecting all special districts against the adverse impact of the Gallagher Amendment is vitally important and necessary to enhancing and continuing to support the health, safety and welfare of all current and future District residents.”

Nourishing Network Needs Volunteers The Nourishing Network is a new outreach program that connects community to food and social services.

This program is active three days a week to address food insecurity and accessibility to needed resources: Saturdays and Mondays at Housing Authority sites, and Wednesdays at the American Legion Circle 119.

Chef Rich Beichner is making Monday Soup and Salad, food is distributed at Lone Tree Apartments near Graves and Community Drive. Anyone is welcome to drop by between noon-1 p.m. to pick up food for themselves, family, or a neighbor. The Donut Haus ladies are making Saturday Breakfast Burritos, these burritos and other nourishing snacks are provided at Falcon Ridge, just west of Salud. Again, anyone is welcome to walk over, drive by, or send a friend to pick up food.

Wednesday nights are dedicated to

hospitality industry employees, food prepared by local restaurants will be distributed at the American Legion from 4:30-6 p.m.

There are a variety of volunteer opportunities that allow this program to work. Chefs are working hard to make yummy food for each of these three distribution sites. Volunteers are needed to get that food ready for graband-go service on Fridays (for Saturday morning), Monday mornings (for lunch), and Wednesday afternoons (for dinner). If you are available to help lead volunteers, can work one shift or all 10 Mondays, please sign up through epnonprofit.org.

Fall is coming! EPRNC is excited to help distribute hearty soups for the next ten weeks. Chef Rich Beichner will prepare soup and salad that will be given away on Mondays at Lone Tree apartments from noon-1 p.m. These apartments are across the street from the Community Center and between Graves Ave. and Manford. Anyone that is nearby, or wants to come by, is welcome to free food.

Wednesday nights are for hospitality industry workers (lodging and restaurant employees) ; folks can dine-in or grab-and-go between 4:30-6 p.m. at the American Legion Circle 119. Park

near the Legion and walk to the front doors.

At each meal site, The Estes Park Nonprofit Resource Center and other nonprofits will be on hand to refer community members to local services they—or someone they know—may need.

This program is first come, first serve; masks and social distancing must be respected. Saturday breakfast, Monday lunch, and Wednesday hospitality night will continue through December 16. Salud Family Health Centers Thanks Dr. Marie Welton, DDS Salud Family Health Centers wants to take a moment to thank Marie Welton, DDS for the dental care she provided to the community and her leadership at the Estes Park Salud Family Health Center. Dr. Welton left the Estes Park Salud after 7 years of service; her last day was September 25, 2020.

Dr. Welton moved to Missouri to return to her mid-western roots. She wanted the community to know the honor she felt serving as the dentist to many community members of all ages and the trust you placed in her. Her experience was a rewarding one for

her and cherished in her heart.

We will miss Dr. Welton’s passion for innovative approaches but her prioritizing the integration of dental care into a patient’s whole-person care lives on. Dr. Welton will be greatly missed and we wish her the best in her move to the mid-west.

John David Norris My father and best friend is in the care of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

John David Norris, a long time resident of Estes Park, passed away at the age of 82 on Wednesday May 12, 2020 at home with me Shawn Norris .

After a six month battle, he succumbed to Prostate Cancer. Dad was born on November 10, 1937 in Centerville, Iowa.

He joined the United States Naval flight training program in 1960 at Corpus Christi, Texas. Flight training continued at Navy flight school in Pensacola, Florida. He was Honorably discharged for reserve service in 1962.

Dad graduated with a B.S. at the University of Arizona.

In 1967, Dad married my Mother Sheila Norris in Estes Park, CO at the former church that is now the church shops in downtown Estes. They had two children, Shawn Norris and Kimberly Norris. They bought a house in Fullerton, CA. Dad worked at Flying Tigers in Long Beach, CA as a flight instructor on the DC-10 aircraft. Dad was laid off at Flying Tigers and was later hired by McDonnell Douglas, where he continued as flight instructor for the DC-10 program. After budget cuts, he was laid off. Dad and Mom divorced in 1980 and dad relocated to Estes Park, CO. Dad was employed seasonally at Rocky Mountain National Park from 1982-2012. Dad worked in various departments over his 30 plus years at the park. He also worked at Hidden Valley ski area throughout the 1980s.

Dad and I were very blessed, with so many wonderful adventures. We hiked, biked and jeeped all over Colorado over the last 40 years. Dad was able to fulfill many dreams of his. He traveled to New Zealand, and biked across the North and South islands.

He visited Norway and was able to visit many places he researched and read about. We were able to travel to Europe together in 2007. We toured most of Switzerland and got to experience all the famous tramways and trains. We also visited the Cinque Terre in Italy and surrounding areas. These memories sustain my happiness, and I will forever cherish the journey we were blessed with.

If you had the pleasure to know dad, you knew what a nice and gentle person he was. His passive personality and ability to be calm, made him easy to get along with. His absence will be dearly missed. I will miss our talks and discussions.

He is survived by his son, Shawn Norris of Fullerton, CA, his daughter Kimberly Norris of Anchorage, AK and his grandson Connor Mckinley.

Two brothers, Bob Norris of Yucaipa, CA and Richard Norris of Colorado Springs and sister, Carolyn Padavich of Centerville, Iowa.

Margie Broman Margie Broman of Fort Worth, TX, formerly of Estes Park died September 29, 2020. She was 80 years old.

Marjorie Moore was born December 7, 1939 in Wilmington, DE. Her parents were Milton and Margaret (Gamble) Moore.

On April 21, 1962 she married Richard (Dick) Broman in Fort Worth, TX. Margie graduated from Texas Christian University with a Bachelor’s Degree in Business. For a while she was a secretary at the Disciples of Christ Church in Arlington, TX, then had a career as Secretary to Dean of Students at TCU. After retirement, Margie and Dick moved to Estes Park, CO, where Margie was active in the Presbyterian Community Church of

the Rockies and PEO Chapter GJ. In August of 2016 they moved to be near family in Texas.

Margie is survived by her husband of Arlington, son Charles Broman (Monica), of Fort Worth, daughters Christina McDonald of Brownwood, TX and Beth Mundell (Chris) of Carrollton, TX, brother David Moore of Arlington, TX, sisters Susan Williams of Los Angeles, CA and Judy Carrick (Gil) of Arlington. She is also survived by seven grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at a later date at the Community Church where her cremated remains will be placed in the Church Columbarium.
