Celebrating Our New Women’s Monument Last Thursday afternoon, September 30, there was a wonderful turnout for the dedication of the new Estes Park Women’s Monument!

The event was hosted by Ron Wilcocks and featured remarks by Woman’s Club members Judi Cunningham and Judy Schaffer, Town Administrator Travis Machalek, Mayor Wendy Koenig, Kim Redd, Senior Constituent Advocate for Congressman Joe Neguse and James Thompson, Senator Michael Bennett’s Northern Colorado Regional Director.

From the state and county, State Senator District 15 Rob Woodward and Larimer County Commissioners Jody ShaddockMcNally and Kristin Stephens and Larimer County Assessor Bob Overbeck were also invited to speak. Artist Jane DeDecker’s remarks were welcomed by all, followed by words from the Arapaho Nation, Fred Mosqueda.

Sculptor Jane DeDecker created this amazing piece of art which celebrates and honors women’s contributions to the history and growth of our mountain town. The new monument is located near the intersection of E. Elkhorn Ave. and Riverside Dr., just west of the Casa Grande Mexican restaurant.

Old Fall River Road In RMNP Closed To Vehicles For Season Old Fall River Road closed for the season to vehicles today, Monday, October 4. The road will be closed to all uses through Friday, October 8, for park staff to conduct road maintenance and culvert replacement. Old Fall River Road will reopen temporarily to bicycles, leashed pets and walkers for Saturday October 9, through Monday, October 11.

Starting, Tuesday, October 12, Old Fall

River Road will close again to all uses for continued road maintenance through Friday, October 15. On Saturday, October 16, the road will reopen to bicycles, leashed pets and walkers

through November 30. Leashed pets and bicycles are only allowed on the road, not on side trails. On December 1, the road will revert to trail status and bicycles and leashed pets will not be allowed on the road.

EPSD BoE Election: DAAC Can Help You Be Informed With an important Estes Park School District Board of Education election November 2, the EPSD District Advisory and Accountability Committee (DAAC) agenda summaries can give one an overview of what has been and is happening in the district. The agendas are a running summary for a school year in bullet form, making them a quick read. They report on yearly plans, growth, challenges, interventions, celebrations, and more as the district moves forward in achieving its Mission, Ends, and Global Outcomes (GOs). There’s also a lexicon of education jargon and abbreviations at the end of each year’s agenda. By reviewing at least the last five years, you should be able to get a feel for the district – including the challenges COVID imposed and how those were met.

Environmental Sustainability Task Force Hosts Listening Session Oct. 14 The Environmental Sustainability Task Force (ESTF) is seeking public input at a virtual listening session Thursday, Oct. 14 from 1:30 to 3:00 p.m. Join the Zoom Webinar at https://us06web.zoom.us/j/82491240043.

After providing a brief overview of the charge of the Task Force and an update on what members have been working on since forming in August, the ESTF will open the floor for questions, comments, and feedback from community members. Board, which are due in January 2022.

The Town of Estes Park Board of Trustees recently established the ESTF, charged with developing recommendations for the Town regarding initiatives, strategies and tactics to advance environmental sustainability. The group’s recommendations are to be presented to the Town Board by January of 2022.

Members of the public can review ESTF meeting materials and post public comment for consideration by the task force in the course of its work at www.estes.org/estf.

The charge(s) are merely an accusation and the defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.

On September 27 at 8:28 a.m. police were called to the 400 block of West Elkhorn Ave. where they arrested a 29 year old male from Estes Park and charged him with criminal mischief and

domestic violence. He was later transported to the Larimer County Jail.

On September 29 at 10:00 a.m. police were called to the 800 block of Bailey Lane where they issued a summons to a 36 year old Estes Park male for a vicious animal prohibited.

EVFPD firefighters generally respond to medical calls in their personal vehicles, allowing for a faster response. On other incidents, firefighters respond to a fire station to respond in department apparatus with specialized equipment.

October Challenges October has been a challenging month for my mayorship. Last October there was COVID-19 pandemic, three wildfires and an evacuation. This October, there is a recall...and the month has just begun.

On Friday, the first day of October, in accordance with section 31-4-502 of the Colorado Revised Statue, I was officially notified that Jackie Williamson, Town Clerk of Estes Park was certifying a petition for recalling me as mayor. According to the notification, John Meissner, Luzia Sahm and Johanna Darden are the petitioners. They have 60 days to submit a petition with 590 valid signatures. And their grounds for recalling me are: 1) Administration “ivory towering” from its inception, initially under the guise of public safety during the COVID pandemic, but now continuing indefinitely, to the extent the Mayor’s Chats, a prominent cornerstone of prior administrations, have not and potentially will never be held, no press conferences scheduled, even virtually, to address questions from local media or taxpayers, then, now or ever.

2) Unwillingness to appoint qualified scientific/medical professionals to local COVID-19 advisory committees, with over-reliance on opinions, advice and direction from business owners/lobbyists for commercial entities regarding mandates, recommendations, and general fund disbursement, to the extent the health and well-being of underrepresented minority populations was and is threatened.

3) Failure to set up local, robust SARSCoV-2 testing, either Polymerase Chain

Reaction, antibody, or antigen-based, thus threatening the health and well- being of underrepresented minorities.

4) Failure to relentlessly advocate for preventative SARS-CoV-s vaccination, while permitting appointed/elected board members to travel by air to highrisk areas or refer in public forums to the vaccine as a ‘death shot’, resulting in at least two preventable community-acquired deaths since vaccines became available.

5) Reliance on specious arguments, including interstate commerce laws, to deflect calls for reprimand or censure of board members who flagrantly and knowingly violated federal safety recommendations.

When I was sworn in as Mayor of Estes Park on April 28, 2020, I pledged, among other things to represent all who live and work here. To do so in an ethical and transparent manner. And to provide fact-based expressions of my positions, early and throughout the deliberative and policymaking processes.

Consistent with my pledge to you then, I now use this opportunity to apprise you about the effort to recall me and the utmost seriousness with which I am giving the matter. Rest assured that I will continue to fully fulfill my mayoral duties and to continue to enthusiastically represent all of the townspeople of Estes Park. Health Services In The Chamber

The Estes Chamber formed our first Health Services Council this month. Dr. Cory Workman of Community Hearing Center is the Chamber’s ambassador to the health services community. He hosted the group of physicians to share inDonna Carlson dustry information and referrals. The inspiration for the meeting quicky proved to be effective.

Jeff Carlson with Colorado Senior Benefits helps senior citizens turning 65 navigate the maze of Medicare. With the open enrollment period for 2022 starting in October, many Medicare patients come to him for advice on reviewing Medicare needs or prescription plans.

When it came to the topic of hearing aids, Dr. Workman quickly suggested that it would serve the customer better if Jeff referred them to a local audiologist.

He noted that it’s important to point out to patients that many programs marketed as a benefit are really nothing but a discount plan. Professionals like Carlson can help customers make the best determination for their health needs.

Dr. Workman told a story about a local dentist, Dr. Pike, who had a patient tell him they became dizzy when he tilted the chair back for an exam. “That could easily be benign positioning vertigo,” Dr. Workman replied. He would perform an Epley maneuver in his office. Dr. Scott Bockelman with Bockelman Chiropractic chimed in that he performs the same maneuver on his chiropractic patients

experiencing dizziness. Both agreed it was very beneficial to know the many ways a practitioner can refer someone with dizziness for immediate relief.

Dr. Bockelman also received referrals from massage therapists near his practice, like Margo Good with Emerald Lake Massage.

“Massage and chiropractic go hand-in-hand,” says Good. “I recommend to most of my clients to talk to Scott. When your muscles and bones are in sync, your body will feel the most relief.”

In the past week we’ve seen an escalated need for our health services community to pull together to help our town grieve. Crisis Advocates has a hotline you can access at 1-513-970EVCA (3822). The Estes Valley Resiliency Collaborative is looking into other ways to serve teams and individuals who want to know how to spot someone in crisis and help before things to terribly wrong. We are hoping to partner with health and fitness providers, nutritionists and others who are in the business of creating whole and happy people.

Chamber members like Jazzercise are promoting the benefits of dance for improving brain health. If you want to add to this effort, please join us.

The health services council of the Chamber was created for doctors and health services providers to have a mastermind network to share best practices and referrals. They would benefit from expanding the council with more general practitioners, chiropractors, orthopedists, dentists, ophthalmologists, and massage therapists who want to expand their referral network and educate one another. The next meeting is Thursday October 21, 8 a.m., at Bockelman Chiropractic, behind VERT Co-Working at 1230 Big Thompson Avenue, Suite B.

Estes Park Genealogical Society Meeting October 14 and more importantly, to trace these trees forward as well as backward, so that living descendants can be located and any letters, documents, or family photographs from that era, if they still exist, become part of the repository of Estes Park and northern Colorado history. Particular attention has been devoted to the Alexander, Hutchinson, and Evans families, those early settlers located at the entrance and exit of the Big Thompson Canyon, whose quirks and hardships provided material both humorous and poignant for "A Lady's Life in the Rocky Mountains."

John Meissner moved permanently to Estes Park in 2007, and has been involved with local history since that time. He has spent the last year researching and preparing for the sesquicentennial celebration of Isabella Bird's arrival in the western U. S., a three-state, ten-day event scheduled for September 2023.

Ok, I give. Mother Nature wins. (She always does.) Autumn is here and there’s nothing I can do about it. I’ve accepted the familiar cold-morning routine of putting on a fleece wrap first thing when I get up, and I’m abiding the darkness of day’s end as it folds its arms around us earlier and earlier in the evening. Once reluctant, I have tipped my hat to summer and am now dancing toward audaciously loving my favorite season. The crisp air, the crunchy sounds, the toasty aromas…what a sensory wonderworld autumn is!

A part of that delicious fall feeling is the innate draw back to the cookstove. After a summer of no-bake meals—to avoid heating up the kitchen—the cooler days stir up the desire to be back in the kitchen making soups, baking breads, and whipping up heavily spiced cakes and cookies. In fact, I did that today. I baked a sour milk spice cake (I love finding recipes that call for sour milk. With several containers of it in the freezer, I need ways to use them up. Next experiment: sour milk cornmeal biscuits.)

For the spice cake I used a recipe I found online which called for cinnamon, nutmeg and cloves. But in old-time recipes I often see allspice and mace, two seasonings I have in my cupboard that mean nothing to me (they’re hand-medowns). I’ve never used them that I recall, I don’t know what they taste like, but I hang onto them—and the cream of tartar—because of their tins.

The cream of tartar is in a Durkee tin.

(The Durkee company was founded in 1851. I don’t think my container of cream of tartar is that old but it might come close.) The tin has a paper price tag stuck to the bottom that tells me it cost $1.23 when it was new. (This same item is currently selling for $20 on eBay.) (As an aside, there was a Durkee plant in Iowa, near where I worked my first “real” job out of college. Each morning as I drove to Devan Direct Marketing the air would be thick with the heady scent of the spice-of-the-day wafting from the Durkee plant. Or it might have been Tone’s; I’m not sure now. Either one, it was a great way to start the day.)

The only time I’ve ever used cream of tartar is when whipping up egg whites for meringue. It’s the powdered form of tartaric acid which comes from fermented grapes, bananas, and citrus. (I want to know who figured out that they could ferment bananas, dry them out, make that stuff into a powder, and add it to egg whites to make them fluffier. It’s beyond me.)

The website mashed.com tells me that cream of tartar doesn’t expire so I can still

use what’s in my almost-full Durkee tin.

“It should last approximately forever, ” the website says.

Based on its name, I assumed allspice was a combination of several spices mixed together, but allspice is a single spice made from the dried berries of the allspice tree (in the myrtle family). The allspice tree is native to Jamaica and was documented by Christopher Columbus during his second voyage to the New World in 1493. I know my allspice isn’t that old because the tin has an Ann Page logo on it. Ann Page was the store brand for the A&P grocery chain which was founded in 1859—as the Great Atlantic and Pacific Tea Company. Columbus was long gone by then.

There is no plastic whatsoever on my Ann Page tin—even the lid, with six holes in a line for sprinkling the spice, is metal.

That’s how old this allspice is. Allspice is the main ingredient in jerk seasoning, however, the only time I use it is when I bake a pumpkin pie for Thanksgiving (I’m not a Cajun food fan). This particular seasoning stays good for three to four years. Don’t worry, I have a new container of the stuff for pumpkin pie. I keep the old tin for posterity. (Who would want it, you ask? I just laugh and put the tin back on my spice shelf.)

Lastly, I have mace in a Schilling brand tin that looks relatively new, despite the price ($1.15) printed onto the bottom of the tin with a purple-ink stamp. I see mace in a lot of older recipes but not in any list of ingredients I use today. Mace is the red lacy coating called the aril, that encases the nutmeg seed. When the tree's fruit reaches maturity, it splits open and reveals the aril and seed. The nutmeg is harvested and the aril is removed and dried. That aril becomes mace, in pieces or ground up. I am not tempted to taste my aged mace, but I read that mace's flavor is sweet, woody and warm with a mild pungent kick, very much like nutmeg but softer and not quite as sweet.

The taste of mace can also be described as a combination of cinnamon and pepper. I like pepper—and cinnamon—so I’d probably like mace. But I’m not going to try it. I’m going to put it back on the shelf with my allspice and cream of tartar and let somebody else deal with them someday when I’m gone. Meantime, I’m going outside to savor my favorite season. Not seasoning, but season. Autumn!

Giving Close To Home By: Brian Schaffer

I was talking with a community member who had given a significant donation to the work we’re doing and discovered the deeper reason why he decided to write the check to Crossroads. His most compelling reason for giving was the simple fact that he likes to invest his money locally where it is being maximized in meeting real needs of his neighbors. As we were wrapping up our conversation he readily admitted that he hadn’t given for a few years, but sensed it was the right time to begin giving again and to give it close to home.

I’m so thankful for this donor as well as many others that have intentionally chosen to give close to home so as to meet the needs of their neighbors.

I had another conversation with some donors and they openly shared why they have Crossroads on their list of charities that they consistently give to. Below is a portion of what Scott & Brandi Applegate shared with me.

“There are many churches ready to help anyone seeking spiritual support and direction, but for physical needs, as I’ve heard Brian Schaffer say many times, “No one in the Estes Valley ever needs to go hungry—we’ve got them covered, with no strings attached.” What a powerful statement! We support Crossroads simply because it gives us the opportunity to tie into, and to be a part of, a very efficient and effective way to help ‘be the hands and feet of Jesus’ for those who need help.”

Over the last week we have given out hundreds of bags of groceries to individuals and families who had no other place to turn for help. We helped people keep their utilities on and rent paid so they can continue to have a place to lay their head at night. One of our clients that we had the privilege of helping last week is a young man who was living in foster care with a family throughout his childhood and teenage years, but once he turned 18 his mother moved away and left him in Fort Collins. For the past several years he has been experiencing seasons of homelessness or better yet a life of hopelessness wondering if things would ever get better. Out of the blue he secured a ride to Estes Park thinking there might be an opportunity to begin a new season in life.

He came to Crossroads and after some heart-to-heart conversations he was convinced he needed to reunite with his foster family and work through the emotional baggage he has been carrying around so as to address the hurts from his past. We helped him find a way back to his family and we are praying he is having much needed conversations with them to mend the fence, rebuild the bridge, and heal the wounds of abandonment so he can get on with his purpose in life. You see, he needed more than a bag of groceries or a couple nights in a motel. I’m glad we were here to meet him at the crossroads of life and point him in the right direction.

Vintage 2021 Fundraiser For Crossroads Sunday, October 24th Crossroads Ministry of Estes Park will once again be holding a fundraiser called “Vintage 2021”. The event is sponsored

by Andy Morgan and the staff of the Dunraven Inn. It will be held on Sunday, October 24th from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the new Dunraven located in the Estes Park Resort. Compared to previous events, this new location will have lots more room and seating available. The event includes wine tasting, fabulous Dunraven hors d’oeuvres, a live auction, door prizes, and lots of fun. Auction items include two beautiful Herb Mignery bronze statues, a Pedego Electric Bike, a Traeger Grill package from Ace Hardware and Estes Park Team Realty, a bed frame from Sticks and Stones, 70” Smart TV, a week in a beautiful Florida Vacation Home, and five days in the Alaska Legends Ke-

nai River Lodge (the entire lodge), just to name a few. There will also be photography/art work from Alpenglow Images, Images of Rocky Mountain National Park, Sky Pond Photography, and G. Harvey. Door prizes will be drawn throughout the evening. This event will be lots of fun and we hope you can join us! Tickets are $100 each and all proceeds go to support the work of Crossroads Ministry of Estes Park. Books, Bird Houses, And Barbeque Sauce Served Up At Treasure Tables On October 23rd Mark your calendar now for October 23rd – the big arts and crafts sale called Treasure Tables to be held in the Events Center at the Stanley Fairgrounds. Admission is free, out of the weather, with

more than 45 vendors selling everything from – yes -- bird houses to barbeque sauce and a whole lot more.

“This is a chance to get a head start on your Christmas shopping,” said Nancy Hills, vice president of the Estes Park’s IY Chapter of PEO, a philanthropic organization dedicated to helping women continue their education through scholarships and low-interest loans. “This has also been called the artisans’ market because there are so many unique and individually hand-crafted items up for sale. You can fill a lot of Christmas stockings by spending an hour or so shopping at Treasure Tables.”

Because the sale is indoors, vendors and shoppers will be

required to wear a face mask to protect against the Covid virus. The Events Center offers plenty of room for vendors to show off their goods in a spacious setting and help in maintaining social distancing. On sale will be creative soaps, wood products, salves and creams, jewelry, specialty clothing, bird houses, wildlife photographs, books, body lotions and oils, candles, stained glass artwork, pottery, and food products to satisfy most anyone’s taste.

PEO’s Chapter IY sponsors the sale each year to raise money for the scholarships. Over the years, PEO International has helped more than 116,000 women by awarding them over $388-million in scholarships.

“Come, get yourself a snack to eat from one of our food vendors or buy a homemade baked good, then walk around in comfort and shop ‘til you drop knowing every dime you spend helps a woman get a better education,” said Hills. “It’s a great way to spread the joy of Christmas far beyond your own doorstep.”

Old Gallery Artist To Demonstrate Clay Techniques On Saturday, October 9 Julie Neri graduated with a degree in Business from Cornell University. But, after earning her Master’s in Public Administration from CU Denver, she started looking for a creative outlet. She signed up for a pottery class, not knowing that she’d find her true calling.

“After getting two degrees in business, I never imaged that I would support myself and my family through my art,” she said with a laugh.

Neri creates hand-built pottery that’s fired to Cone 6 in an electric kiln. She is known for her leaf trees, houses, sea turtles, decorative leaf bowls, vases and painter’s palettes. Her creations are based in texture, inspired by nature and infused with a touch of whimsy. “I want my work to bring people joy,” she said. “I love it when people walk by my art, they stop and look and smile.” You’ll see themes of sea life, trees, leaves and patterns from nature in her pottery. Her inspiration comes from growing up on the Connecticut shore and living in Colorado since 1992. You’ll see patterns taken from veins in a leaf, the bark of a tree, the shell of a sea turtle and rambling stones of a rock wall incorporated into her designs.

Neri is one of 28 regional artists featured at The Old Gallery in Allenspark, a nonprofit center for art, community and visitors. You can view her art there from 9:30 a.m.- 4:30 p.m. daily.

One of her more popular creations are ceramic trees that are often seen as holiday trees, but are meant to be displayed yearround. She’s recently begun carving functional and creative painter’s palettes that artists are embracing.

Neri will be doing an art demonstration at The Old Gallery on Saturday, October 9 from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. “I will demonstrate the process I use to create my leaf trees,” she said. She’s also introducing a line of six different palette ornaments which will be available during The Old Gallery’s Holiday Shoppe in November and December.

Her business acumen serves her well as she markets and sells her creations. “I come up with an idea and my brain immediately starts working on the efficiency of how to create it, while also planning how I will market it. When I designed my leaf trees, I started with a forest, then broke it down to the different-sized trees

and added in bird and star toppers,” she said.

A long-time member of the Boulder Potter’s Guild, Neri helped the organization establish an automated system for managing individual artist’s inventory, revenue and sales, “They used to sell the work of 50 artists with handwritten receipts. I set up the artists with product codes and the organization with a computerized inventory management and POS system. The hardest part was teaching a large group of artists to manage their inventory with spreadsheets and product codes,” she said.

Neri comes from a family of artistic individuals. Her sister is a ceramics teacher and sculptor. Her dad designed and built furniture. Her mother was a home economics teacher with a flair for sewing and knitting. “Art wasn’t foreign in my house. I took a lot of art classes in high school and college. I just didn’t realize I could make a living doing it,” she said. She still has the very first piece of pottery she ever made. “It’s a hand-built clay soap dish. I prefer to do hand-built pieces versus working on a wheel.”

For many years, she didn’t think she was “worthy” of having her work displayed in a bone fide art gallery. “The Old Gallery had contacted me several times in the past, and I didn’t think I was ready.

I’m honored to now have my work at The Old Gallery.”

The Old Gallery Artists Co-Chair Kathy Banich said, “Julie’s work is admired by everyone who enters The Old Gallery. Her pieces exude and balance both classy sophistication and whimsical fun. We are excited to have Julie as a member of our Art body and can’t wait to see what she adorns the gallery with this Fall.”

When asked what advice she’d give to an aspiring artist, she said, “Join a community to get to know other people who are doing the same kind of work. You’ll learn from the people around you. Oliver Tapia Villegas

Congratulations to Oliver Tapia Villegas, the Estes Park High School Student of the Week for October 8, 2021.

School activities Oliver enjoys are playing 10th Grade soccer, basketball and being a member of the band where he plays the saxophone. Currently, his favorite class is band. He said, “I like it because it is my first year marching and being able to put marching and playing together has been so amazing! I’m also very proud of being able to have a GPA of 3.75 my freshman year.”

Outside of school, Oliver loves going hiking and seeing new places. He likes cooking, playing games both outside and inside and road trips.

When asked his favorite place to visit or vacation destination he said, “I really want to visit Paris, France one day and be able to see all of the different things there are in that city.”

Oliver’s favorite quote is “Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you didn’t do than by the things you did” by Mark Twain. He said, “I like this quote because I do think that people should life live to the fullest and not care about what other people think about them and I feel like that is hard to do nowadays and people should be able to live a life that they want to live.”

When asked what the best piece of advice would he give, he answered, “A piece of advice I would give to people would be to stay positive even when you are faced with a lot of negative things in life.”

After high school Oliver says, “I would like to go to college, I’m not quite sure which one yet, I am still trying to figure out what I’d like to do.”

October Meeting Of The Estes Park Woman’s Club The October meeting will be held on Wednesday, October 13, 2021, at the American Legion. Snowy Owl Brings Comfort And Joy

Local multi-media artist, Rosemary Sloan, presented a whimsical white owl to Donna Shavlik today as a joyful start to the fall season. “Donna Shavlik brings joy wherever she goes, so we hope that this owl will bring joy to her,” said Sloan.

Shavlik collects white owls as they are her animal totem. Called a snowy owl, it represents higher wisdom gained from its unique vantage point, above the earth.

Happy fall, or at least to me when we enter October, it is fall. We are nearly at two years of the Covid pandemic. We have had a long stretch of keeping apart, wearing masks, cleaning our hands and some have had Covid and survived, while others have succumbed. The inner spirit of all of us is still there and we will go on and there will be an end to this.

All of you are in my thoughts and prayers. On the bright side, I got my third shot, my booster and did not have that many bad side effects this time. I wasn’t terribly sick as I was the second time. I am glad that I got the booster as some of my family had breakthroughs with the Delta virus, even though they had the two shots.

My family is as back to normal as we can be at this time. We have family gatherings and family meals whenever possible but, then there are times that I must fix my own dinner and eat alone. That is when I like to try a new recipe. I had bought a large carton of cherry tomatoes the other day to make a big salad for a church potluck. I made deviled eggs instead. Now, what to do with all those tomatoes? Pillsbury came to the rescue.

They recently emailed me several tomato recipes. One is a galette tomato recipe. A galette is a one crust, very rustic pie of sorts…a fancy name for a pie. I am going to make it tonight.

Tomato Galette

Serves 6. Pre-heat oven 400 degrees, bake 27-32 minutes 1 1/2 cups of cherry tomatoes. (You can

use a mix of colored small tomatoes or even grape tomatoes.)

1 crust (store bought refrigerated Pillsbury is suggested) 1 cup shredded white cheddar cheese (You could use any kind like yellow, jack, etc.)

1 Tbs. fresh chives. Maybe oregano? ¼ tsp. both salt and pepper Cut tomatoes in half and drain, cut side down, on paper towels for 15 minutes.

Roll crust into a 12-inch circle. Place on parchment paper and cookie pan.

Spread cheese on crust to 1 ½ inch from edge, reserving 2-3 Tbs. cheese for topping pie.

Place tomatoes around the cheese, cut side up.

Sprinkle remaining cheese and salt and pepper over top of tomatoes.

Now start to fold the edges of crust over from edge in about 1 ½ folds. You will circle the entire edge of galette with the folds. You now have an edge holding the filling from spilling out. Place in center of oven and bake until crust is golden, 27-32 minutes. Allow galette to cool 15 minutes. Enjoy for a few days, if you live alone as I do, or have a friend or two over. A salad completes the meal.

“HOW DO I LOVE THEE? LET ME COUNT THE WAYS.” “How do I love thee? Let me count the ways. I love thee to the depth and breadth and height my soul can reach when feeling out of sight…I love thee with the breath, smiles, tears, of all my life; and, if God choose, I shall love thee better after life.” So wrote Elizabeth Barrett Browning in one of the most adored love poems of all time. It’s a good model for every person to ask and answer themselves when thinking of their loved ones …spouses and children, and I would hope that we could answer that question with abundant ‘evidences’ of that love that each of them would agree with.

It’s a question that God ponders and then answers with many things: His great creation, His giving of ‘life and breath and all things’ to His creatures…you and me, and, most of all, in the giving of His Son. “God so loved that He gave His only begotten Son!” It follows, then, that it’s a question that every church that claims to represent Him, should ask themselves…”How do I love thee?” when thinking about those they reach out to in their community. No group should have to stop and think awhile before they answer the question, but readily tell and show ways that they ‘are there’ for those around them.

There are so many things which local churches should stand ready to offer those around them…their members, but also those who are not affiliated with their group. Of Jesus it was said: “He went about doing good and healing those under the power of the devil” (Acts 10:38). Of some who claim to represent Him it has been said ‘They just go about!’ It was true of religious leaders in Jesus’ day, it’s no surprise that it is true today. That does not mean that we should ask churches we consider: “What have you done for me lately?” or “What will you do for me in the future?” Our late President J. F. Kennedy was on target when he urged: “Do not ask what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country!” However, there are certain qualities in that ‘country’ or that ‘church’ that will make it conducive for us ‘to do’ for others. Of the church described in the Bible, we learn that ‘they were all of one mind and judgement’ and that, when all were scattered by persecution, ‘they went preaching the Word!’ The Bible speaks often about the active involvement of all the members, using their talents to serve.

So, how do we…at the Church of Christ that meets at 1470 Fish Creek Road ’love thee’…the community members that live in Estes Park? Well, obviously, most churches are expected to ‘marry’ and ‘bury’. And certainly, we stand ready to assist in such things. I’m amazed, and shocked, at the enormous amount of money many couples expect to pay to get married, often in the thousands, leaving them with massive debt from the very beginning. Both of our preachers have done weddings in homes, motel yards, RMNP hillsides in the shadow of Longs Peak, or in our building, for very little. The same is true of funeral or memorial services. But, more than that, how do we love thee? Such situations can benefit from counseling and ongoing encouragement to assist those marriages and survivors to have the very best life and recovery possible. Bob has his MS in Marriage and Family and other types of counseling, and his services are available to all at no cost. Other kinds of support services that we provide are home and hospital visits for those ‘under the weather’. James urges: “Is any sick? Let them call for the elders of the church to pray and minister to them”. We truly believe in this level of ministry…except where forbidden by pandemic rules, thus, limiting such to simply praying for people in our personal and congregational prayers. We firmly believe and try to practice God’s call to “Do good unto all men, especially those of the family of faith!”

Most of all, of course, we are committed to ‘doing good’ in spiritual things to all we meet.

It most important for people to ‘be in Christ’ in order to receive the ultimate good that we can give them. “Blessed are the dead who die ‘in the Lord’! Yea, that they may rest from their labors, for their works follow them.” Eternal blessings are found ‘in Christ’, and we’d like to help you be assured of them. ‘How do we love thee? Count the ways’. Vert Coworking To Open Estes Park Office In October Coworking and flexible office space have been expanding in large metropolitan cities for years. Five Fun Facts About… The Double-Crested Cormorant By: Dawn Wilson

This week’s featured animal is the double-crested cormorant.

A few double-crested cormorants have made Lake Estes their summer home for a few years now. They will be leaving soon for warmer weather, but it has been fun to watch them dive for fish and sun themselves on the rocks on low water level days. Here are five facts about this unique looking bird

Cormorants can be pretty aggressive birds, even with species much larger than them.

1. The oldest documented wild doublecrested cormorant lived to be 17 years and nine months, eight years older than the average lifespan of a wild bird.

2. Juvenile double-crested cormorants are brown with a buff belly and neck.

Their adult counterparts, however, are dark black with an orange throat patch and a distinct turquoise eye.

3. The double-crested cormorant is the

only cormorant that nests in the Western interior, including in rookeries on islands in Colorado lakes. Most other cormorants nest along the coasts of California, Oregon, Washington, Alaska and Florida.

4. Double-crested cormorants eat mostly fish — more than 250 species have been documented — but supplement their diet with insects, crustaceans, and amphibians.

Sales Of Beautiful Artwork By Artist Lindsey Sutherland To Benefit Glen Haven Area Volunteer Fire Department October Non-Profit Pre-Order Sale GHAVFD (Glen Haven Area Volunteer Fire Department) is made up completely of volunteers. They are a 100% selffunded non-profit that relies completely on donations and fundraising, and they receive no funding from tax revenue.

They have worked very closely with other agencies in the area, including the Estes Valley Watershed Coalition, Estes Valley Fire Protection District, and Larimer County Sheriff ’s Office.

During the fires of 2020, GHAVFD was able to protect close to 40 structures in the area from the Cameron Peak Fire.

They also became part of a strike force, being part of the overall Incident Management Team. And when the East

I had offered a second space for donations for this month to both the Estes Valley Fire Department and the Watershed Coalition, but they both turned it down so that Glen Haven Fire Department could be the full beneficiary of this collaboration. Reiterating the fact that these agencies are a team, a family, and that you can’t have one without the other. Families take care of their own, and we as their community need to

Sharing a border with the Estes Valley, the Glen Haven Fire Department has been in close mutual aid with Estes Valley Fire District for many years. The two departments work together, responding to emergencies when the other needs assistance – such as the recent fire in the Glacier Creek Stables in RMNP. The two agencies also train together at a regional fire academy held by the Estes department.

In discussing working with the department, Chief David Wolf stated: “The common thread … is collaboration. Many of the challenges we are facing are bigger than one agency can tackle on their own. By working together, our teams can do more, support one another, and better serve those we hope to protect.”

Knowledge Matters When Managing Wildlife: Perspectives With Kevin Cook How can we ensure that the most up-to-date and expert knowledge informs the decisions we make around managing wildlife in Colorado? Longtime naturalist and writer Kevin Cook has been reflecting on this question, and he will present his insights at a program this Monday evening to begin a three-part monthly series.

The first talk is titled “Managing Wildlife by Knowledge rather than Opinion” and takes place on Monday, October 11 from 6 to 7:30 p.m., sponsored by the Estes Valley Library and taking place in the Hondius Community Room. Sign-up is open on the library’s Events Calendar.

Cook has been leading nature talks since 1993, including presentations at libraries around the state. “As we continue learning,” he writes, “we acquire new information that collectively expands our knowledge about Life on Earth. What we know today vastly out-measures what we knew a generation ago. Knowledge becomes the only meaningful, productive way for addressing problems that arise from our confrontations between Humanity and the rest of life. Problems

Since earning his degrees in biology and wildlife biology from Western State College and Colorado State University, Cook has worked full-time as a writer-naturalist. He has explored Colorado to experience its wildlife firsthand, with a special focus on addressing the issues that arise between people and the natural world. For 37 years, Cook served as a nature columnist for the “Fort Collins Coloradoan” newspaper.

He writes natural history columns for many other publications and leads wildlife observation tours. He teaches wildlife classes and presents regular lectures at several Colorado venues.

The October 11 talk will be followed by “A Different Way to Hug a Tree” on November 8 and “Here, Kitty, Kitty!

Rafting the Truckee River was next as we floated on Lake Tahoe’s one and only outlet.

The girls learned the challenges in planning activities that are more than a walking distance from where they’re staying and the costs of different types of travel. For example the cost of a train ticket depends on ones age and where they sit, the cost of a rental vehicle verses local shuttles and how that dictates what activities are planned. With all that in mind the Scouts created a schedule.

Then they learned how to brainstorm a healthy food menu and decide which foods were best for each meal depending on surrounding activities or energy levels. All Scouts took turns with various responsibilities throughout the trip with food shopping, meal prep, meal clean up, schedule timelines, shuttle bus transfer scheduling, and bathroom cleaning all while enjoying the beach and playing ping-pong.

We have traveled to parts of Colorado and now out of state to California. Next we plan to travel out of the country to Europe in July 2023. This is where you,

Lastly, as being the only Girl Scout troop in town, recruiting has been our goal. The Scouts learn valuable lessons at every level through hands on experiences and discoveries. As the Scouts Bridge to the next level, the challenges and adventures become more advanced as they grow more independent upon themselves and each other as Girl Scouts are G. I.R. L. Lead (Go-Getter, Innovator, Risk-Taker, Leader). The troop has hosted 3 recruiting events, a Sister-Sledding in March, S’more-A-Singalong in May and in June a Come Climb with Scouts. Estes Park now has 8 Scouts in the newly formed Daisy/Brownie troop 77784 (K-3 grade) and 12 Scouts in the Junior/Cadette troop 70455 (grades 4-8).

Lost And Found Pets: Info From The Estes Park Pet Association Because Estes Park does not have animal control the EP Pet Association handles lost and found pets a little differently.

If you have FOUND a lost pet: Please contact the Estes Park Police Department at their non-emergency number 970-586-4000 they can file a “found” report or impound the animal for you.

You are also encouraged to visit one our local vet offices so the animal can be scanned for a microchip. The Town of Estes Park will impound the animal for five days in accordance with state law at the Estes Park Pet Lodge. We will look for their owners and after five days, (if left unclaimed) the Estes Park Pet Association will assess, perform necessary health care and place them up for adoption.

586-4000 they can file a “lost” report.

They try to match lost and found reports of animals at large. Autumn Gold Festival Raffle Winners 2021 Estes Valley Sunrise Rotary announces the Autumn Gold 2021 Raffle Winners below. Proceeds from the $100 Raffle will go to scholarships for promising Estes Park High School graduates for college and vocational school. Each raffle ticket offered the buyer a chance to win the $10,000 Grand Prize or the $2,500 second prize and other $100 cash prizes. This year, the club purchased gift cards from local restaurants and awarded them as additional raffle prizes.

Leslie Glover, Director of the Autumn Gold Festival, said: “Due to the pandemic, we had to cancel Autumn Gold 2020; and that caused a ripple effect in our town. Our club had fewer funds to award for scholarships and community grants and the town lost its annual tax revenue from our festival. As a club we knew that the whole community suffered, especially small businesses and restaurants. So, in support of the community, our club purchased gift cards from local restaurants and award them as raffle prizes.”

Sunrise Rotary and the Estes Valley Community have had a long history of mutual support and respect. Mark Holdt, Director of Fundraising, said, “We are thrilled with the strong support of our many sponsors and are grateful for their commitment to our community and to Sunrise Rotary.”

Thanks For A Great Walk To School Event Dear Editor: A huge thank you is in order for the successful Walk to School Day event on Oct 6. This event was led by the Estes Park Schools and Estes Valley Investment in Childhood Success (EVICS).

School Nurse Caitlin, and EVICS staff Erin and Rut were instrumental in planning this event. The Estes Park Police Department supported this event with their officers keeping the walking area safe.

A special thank you to the Estes Valley Fire Protection District, Estes Park Health EMS, Town Streets Division and the Police Department for attending this event, and having their vehicles onsite at the Events parking lot for students to walk by. This is always a thrill for students.

Many thanks to the parents, students and others who participated in this special event. We appreciate that you took the time to acknowledge the importance of walking to school. The benefit of this includes the health of our children and

environmental stewardship.

Students were dropped off at the Events parking lots so a thanks goes to the Events Department for not having any events that morning. The weather was good and students with adults formed multiple walking school buses to the elementary and middle schools. Students received bags of items assembled by EVICS staff and volunteers. And school personnel offered tips for safe walking.

The Town partnered with the Schools and EVICS and supported this event through the Safe Routes to School (SRTS) program (Colorado Department of Transportation). The Town has received funds to support infrastructure projects (Brodie Ave and Graves Ave projects) and also programs such as Walk to School Day events. We hope this will be an annual community event.

Time For Change To The Editor: Undoubtedly all the candidates for the Estes Valley School Board are concerned about our students and desire excellence in education. The question we must ask is “What direction best achieves that purpose?” One team embraces the current direction which, according to the EPSD website, supports equity of outcome as opposed to equality of opportunity. Equity grading does not have incentives for gradual learning (quizzes don’t count) or prompt completion of work (papers are not considered late if not turned in on time.) I believe in grace but I also think students, yes even those who come from less advantaged backgrounds, will rise to our level of expectations. Basic life skills like punctuality, reliability and consistency are the attributes everyone needs for success.

Ask our local business owners what they value. Read noted black authors like Jason O’Riley, Walter Williams, Clarence

Thomas or Thomas Sowell for agreement on that point. This is just one of many areas where I believe the status quo is flawed.

I support the team of John Davis, Stacy Ferree and Ava Kendall. They are being portrayed as extremists. I see what is being taught in our schools today as the more extremist position. It is time to make factual education rather than social agendas the main point of our instruction. Teach reading, writing, math.

Teach verifiable history, both the good and the bad. Teach how the government is designed to function to produce knowledgeable rather than emotional voters. Provide ESL support and tutoring for students who require supplemental instruction. It is a disservice to every student to reduce expectations.

Peggy Mauerman-The Right Choice For School Board To the Editor, In the upcoming Estes Park School Board election, I support Peggy Mauerman for a seat on the school board. I have known Peggy for over 20 years and I have found her to be a smart, accomplished woman of integrity.

I have witnessed her caring for young people first hand when we volunteered together on a number of mission trips with local youth. She connected with the kids with genuine interest and respect.

To see students as individuals is of vital importance for a school board member.

Peggy retired after 30 years with Hewlett Packard. She spent time as a manager in their international operation. She understands fiscal and personnel issues on a real level. Her experience

will be invaluable for our school district.

Courtney Cabrera Running For EPSD School Board Director To The Editor: My name is Courtney Cabrera and I am honored to be running for EPSD Board of Education. As a life-long educator, mother of two little boys who will go through our school system, and a current Board of Education Director, I have a vested interest in ensuring EPSD provides quality, relevant, and impactful educational experiences for every student.

As an educator, I have served students in classrooms, as an instructional leader in a building, and at two state departments of education. I believe these varying levels of educational experience provide unique opportunities for me to continue impacting the work happening in EPSD as a Board of Education Director.

Despite being new to our town, I have a deep desire to serve our community and all those within it. I hope to serve stu-

dents by ensuring the EPSD education system meets the needs of all learners. I hope to serve educators by ensuring they have the tools and resources necessary to support students in their educational journeys. Endorsing John Davis, Stacy Ferree And Ava Kendall For School Board To The Editor: Our EP schools are failing our children and that falls on the shoulders of leadership. Our teachers are on the front lines but they have parameters, set by the board of education and administration.

John Davis, Stacy Ferree and Ava Kendall are three parents running for the Board of Education who want to fix the problems the current board and board has brought to Estes Park.

When the board tells our children it’s okay to be mediocre with their new “Grading for Equity” system, there is no incentive to excel. When the board puts social matters ahead of reading, writing and math, kids will become activists instead of active thinkers who know how to read. The school is there to teach, not indoctrinate, but that is the road we have

been on for the past several years.

Our schools are in the bottom 20% in Colorado and have declined over the past four years. Our elementary school is in a dismal 6% of schools in Colorado essentially on probation. When looking at real estate in Estes Park, our elementary school is ranked three out of 10; the middle and high schools five out of 10 (greatschools.org).

If you want mediocrity and a steady decline, vote for those who aren’t pushing excellence. If you want to bring back a will to learn, to bring our 23% of ELL learners up to grade level, and to allow parents to have a say in what their children learn, vote for John Davis, Stacy Ferree and Ava Kendall.

I am seeking to serve on the Estes Park School Board because of my unique and varied experiences in the classroom and the community. Combined with a true interest in investing time and resources in our younger generations, I am running to Enhance student education, Strengthen test scores, Take up teacher support, Elevate parental involvement and Sharpen community engagement. I desire to use my personal interest and professional experiences to invest in a community in which I am proud to live.

Lewis Franklin Townsend Lewis Franklin Townsend passed away Saturday September 11, 2021 at his home in Estes Park, Colorado.

Lew was born November 29, 1949 in Chadron, Nebraska to his wonderful parents Dr. Robert Lewis Townsend and Helen (Kounovsky) Townsend.

Lew was the youngest of three children, raised in a very loving home.

His father was a Minister in the United Methodist Church and his mother a School teacher. The family would spend their summers in Estes Park, and when Lew was in high school he had a job delivering groceries for Brodie’s Grocery Store.

Lew graduated from Kearney High School in Kearney, Nebraska in 1967 before heading out to the west coast to search for all of the excitement that Southern California had to offer. Lew worked as an Ambulance Driver for Schaffer Ambulance, and had an apartment in Malibu on the Pacific Coast Highway when he met California native Mary Arrighi in 1971. They had a blast on Lew’s motorcycle spending their weekends riding with friends to the mountains, the desert or up and down the amazing PCH. Lew and Mary were married in June 1973 at the First United Methodist Church in Hastings, Nebraska, and spent their Honeymoon in Estes Park. After their union they moved to San Diego where Lew found work in construction building concrete tilt-up walls for commercial buildings. In the Spring of 1974 they decided to try a change of pace, and they packed up their truck and their dogs and set out across the country. They ended up in Hyattville, Wyoming and found work on a Cattle and Sheep Ranch in the Big Horn Mountains. Lew helped with the Cattle and Mary with the Sheep. After about nine months they moved on to Hastings, Nebraska to be closer to Lew’s family. Lew found work in home construction and later started his own company, that built the McDonalds in Hastings, and another restaurant in Grand Island called Hobo Joes. Lew and Mary share a daughter, Jean.

Lew met Leslie O’Hern in 1979 in Prescott, Arizona where he was working construction building restaurants.

They were married in March 1980 on a mountain outside Wickenburg, Arizona while gold mining at the historic Red Bluff Mine. They spent their summers working in Estes Park from 1979-1981. They continued to spend the winter months mining in Arizona at Red Bluff and Yellow Bird Mines until moving to Missoula, Montana (Leslie’s hometown) in the fall of 1982.

He built a VW powered dredge for

gold mining on the Missouri River outside Helena, Montana with his brother-in-law Mark in the summer of 1983.

While the gold mining didn’t produce much gold, it provided abundant golden experiences that Lew loved to tell stories about. He did come from a long line of talkers! Lew began doing remodeling and maintenance work in Missoula, and later lived in and remodeled the old school house in Bonita, Montana outside Missoula.

Lew also loved hunting and fishing in Montana. Lew and Leslie moved to Estes Park in the fall of 1985 with their two sons, Morgan and Bobby.

They started their own business Alpine Maintenance, where they did a wide variety of work including remodeling and chimney cleaning and repair. Lew volunteered for the Cub Scouts, and helped found a Boy Scout Troop focused on low impact outdoor experiences and community service.

Lew loved their annual family trips from 1988-1995 to Cedar Mesa and the Bluff, Utah area and Chaco Canyon in New Mexico, spent camping, hiking and exploring Anasazi lands full of ruins and rock art. They were joined by many treasured friends on some of these trips. Lew and Leslie were able to give their sons many amazing Spring Break experiences on the Hopi Reservation in northern Arizona, where they would visit annually for six years making many wonderful friends and memories. They were blessed to be invited into Kiva Ceremonies, and their sons were able to attend school on First Mesa during their Spring Break trips from 1991-1994.

Later in life Lew worked as a General Contractor remodeling homes in the Estes Valley. He enjoyed and took great pride in doing tile work, and even found a new talent and hobby building furniture. Lew loved fishing Lake Estes and surrounding rivers, and generally any time spent in the outdoors all year round. He enjoyed deep conversations about life, history, philosophy and music with his family and friends, that they equally enjoyed and will miss. He loved & cherished his beloved Golden Retrievers, and he was passionate about both Broncos and Nebraska football.

He was preceded in death by his loving parents, his beloved sister Judith Joy O’Brien and brother-in-law John Nicholson. He is survived by his sister Rosemary Nicholson, of McKinney, Texas, his brother-in-law Bill O’Brien of Chicago, Illinois, his three children, Jean Tasker (Mark) of Estes Park, Colorado, Morgan Townsend (Tara Back) of Loveland, Colorado, Bobby

Seneca Corey Seneca Corey, age 19, of Livermore, Colorado passed away on Tuesday, September 28, 2021.

Seneca was born April 6, 2002 in Mesa, Arizona.

Seneca had a fierce love for horses. She had her first horse Buddy at the age of 3 and has loved herds of them along her journey.

Seneca also loved her dogs throughout her entire life. You would never see Seneca without Bentley by her side.

She cherished her friends and siblings.

She was funny, sassy, fiercely independent, and would light up any room with her beautiful smile and wit. The world is a darker place without her in it.

Seneca is survived by her mother Dorothy Farrel and grand parents Toby and Christine Farrel who were long time residents of Estas Park.

Seneca is survived by her father Craig (Debbie), brothers Braxton, Colin, and John, sister in-laws Carlee, Amanda, and Rachel, her nephew Wesley, dozens of aunts, uncles, cousins, her cherished friends, her dog Bentley, and horses Royal, Monte,

Richard, Peanut, Freedom, Twister, and Decker.

She was predeceased by and has waiting for her: her brother through love Shane, her beloved horses Chip, Caliber, and Gemini.

A memorial service will be held for Seneca at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, October 8th, 2021 at Resthaven Funeral home. Please come as you are or where your favorite pair of boots and jeans Seneca style.

Virginia A. Rowan Virginia A. Rowan passed away peacefully with family on August 28th, 2021.

Born Virginia E. Akins in Memphis, Tennessee on 3/29/1954 she spent her early years in Dallas, Texas. Then she and her family fulfilled a collective dream by moving to Colorado in 1967, originally to Boulder, then to Estes Park where she graduated from high school in 1972.

She was a mainstay of the family restaurant/lodging business before marrying Tom Rowan and moving to Chicago. But the allure of Colorado was too great and she eventually returned. Fiercely independent, she was self-taught in information system soft-

ware, from network administration to a number of accounting packages while working for Omni Financial. A rabid fan of musicals, she attended all she could on the local scene and made repeated trips to New York city to see the original performances. Virginia also had a genuine love for all animals. She was sincerely loyal with a kind and caring heart for her friends and loved ones.

Virginia is survived by her father Bob and brother Bob Jr. In lieu of funeral services we ask that all who wish to participate make a donation to the American Cancer Society.
