Prioritizing Resources: Town Budget 2022 By: Town Administrator Travis Machalek The annual budget process is a great opportunity for any interested resident to learn more about the Town’s priorities and financial status. In fact, the budget is the primary tool used by the Town Board to prioritize and finance its policy objectives.

Town staff have worked to develop the 2022 Town budget since May of this year.

The annual budget process begins each year with a preliminary update to our Capital Improvement Plan. This update is closely followed by the Town Board’s strategic planning process, which informs the rest of the budget development process described below.

After the base budget has been created, each individual department reviews the Town Board Strategic Plan and generates Service Level Proposals. These proposals represent changes in the way we do business and can add costs, reduce costs, add revenue, and/or reduce revenue. The Executive Leadership Team (ELT) reviews the base budget and the Service Level Proposals together, then ranks and discusses the relative priority of each proposal in the

context of our overall budget. The ELT includes all of the Town’s department directors, the Assistant Town Administrator, the Public Information Officer, and me. Ultimately, the ELT discussion informs the final recommended budget that I am required by municipal code to submit to the Town Board.

The Town Board will begin to review the Town Administrator’s recommended budget at two budget study sessions, on Sept. 30 (2:30 – 6:30 p.m.) and Oct. 7 (1:00 – 4:00 p.m.). These study sessions are open meetings and can be attended in person or virtually. If you plan to attend either of these meetings in person, please continue to pay attention to the Town’s information releases as the current plan could shift due to COVID-19 precautions. These meetings are also recorded and uploaded to the Town’s YouTube channel in case interested residents are not able to attend the meetings. Members of the public are encouraged to submit specific comments on the budget development using the public comment form at https://dms.estes.org/forms/TownBoardPublicComment (also linked at www.estes.org/boardsandmeetings) for Town Board and/or during the open public comment period at the beginning of each Town Board meeting. While public comment isn’t included during study sessions, it is an important component of the Oct. 26 and Nov. 9 public hearings, when the Town Board will consider the adoption of the

budget. If you are interested in seeing the Town invest money in a particular priority (or decrease investment in a less important area), engaging in the budget process is the best way to have your voice heard.

Our local economy has bounced back from last year’s pandemic-induced downturn in a big way. As of this writing, year-todate sales tax collections through June are up 37 percent ($2,286,046) from 2019.

More specific to our local economic health, year-to-date taxable sales in the 80517 zip code are up by 24 percent ($25,700,756) from 2019. Staff expects the trend of increases over the pre-pandemic receipts from 2019 to continue this year given the robust visitation the community has continued to see through the middle part of September. Even with that positive news, there is still some economic uncertainty surrounding COVID-19, especially with the rise of the Delta variant. Accordingly, staff is taking a conservative approach to budgeting for next year by not projecting significant revenue increases from sales tax.

Our financial standing, as we prepare the 2022 budget, remains strong. The largerthan-expected growth in sales tax collections this year has given the staff an opportunity to recommend significant investments in Town Board priorities, onetime capital expenditures, and staff capacity, while still protecting healthy reserves.

Rural Property Assessment Fieldwork To Start

6,700 copies were printed this week, and distributed FREE to hundreds of Estes Valley locations including Allenspark, Glen Haven & Lyons.

Fall property assessment fieldwork begins in rural areas of Larimer County in late September and will continue to early December in the Estes Park area, Glen Haven, Drake, Red Feather Lakes, Crystal Lake, and Livermore.

The work, which started September 27, is part of the normal assessment activity to ensure accurate data is collected and to verify that properties are assessed correctly. “I want our property owners to be

aware of this activity and feel safe when my staff shows up at their business, home or neighborhood,” said Larimer County Assessor Bob Overbeck.

While working in the field, Larimer County Assessor’s staff will be driving Larimer County vehicles, and residents are encouraged to ask them for proof of identification. They will be taking measurements and photos around exteriors of properties, and if the owners are

Estes Park Officer Involved Incident On September 23, 2021 On September 23, 2021, at approximately 2:30 p.m., Chief Wes Kufeld of the Estes Park Police Department contacted the Larimer County Sheriff ’s Office and gave notification that he was asking for the Eighth Judicial District Critical Incident Response Team (CIRT) to be activated to assist his agency. This request was predicated on a report that alleged a current Estes Park Police Officer committed a domestic violence situation that occurred on September 17, 2021, within the town limits of Estes Park.

The Larimer County Sheriff ’s Office consulted with the 8th Judicial District Attorney’s Office and CIRT was initiated with the Larimer County Sheriff ’s Office as the lead investigative agency. As the investigation progressed during the afternoon, family members were interviewed about the allegations. Investigators received information that the involved officer was at his residence with two other family mem-

bers. Several attempts were made to contact the officer without success. The other two family members were removed from the residence safely.

Based on circumstances developed through the interviews, search warrants were drafted for the officer’s residence.

The Larimer County Sheriff ’s Office AllHazards/Crisis Response Team and the Boulder County Sheriff ’s Office SWAT team served the search warrants at the officer’s residence at approximately 9:15 p.m. The officer was found deceased at the residence.

The Larimer County Coroner’s Office later released the officer’s identity as well as cause and manner of death. (see below) The CIRT investigation into the September 17th incident will continue and the results will be presented to the District Attorney.

Chief of Police Wes Kufeld: "Captain Eric Rose was a dedicated officer with our department for over 26 years, and a highly respected member of our command staff. He began his law enforcement career with our agency, when we hired him in May of 1995.

He was a born leader who was always community-focused and service-oriented.

He was a pillar of the community-oriented policing in which our department prides itself. As Emergency Manager he led our community through floods, fires and so much more. His work positively impacted the safety and sustainability of our community for its residents and visitors. This entire situation is a shock to our team, and I can’t begin to describe the heartache we are feeling. Please keep Eric’s family in your hearts and prayers."

Estes Park Mayor Wendy Koenig: "We are without words to describe the pain we feel. Estes Park is a small town, and many of us have known Captain Rose and his family personally for decades. Please join us in sending thoughts and prayers to Eric’s family.

Our hearts also go out to his fellow police officers and Town staff, who are all suffering a great loss."

Town Administrator Travis Machalek: "We are devastated by the loss of our friend and colleague, Captain Eric Rose.

He was an outstanding member of our team for decades, and always focused on supporting his community. Eric’s family’s unimaginable loss is our first concern, and our focus is on supporting them, as well as our team."

On September 20 at 1:57 p.m. police were called to the 200 block of West Elkhorn Ave. where they contacted a 52 year old female from Remsen, NY and a 52 year old female from Lakewood, CO who were arrested and charged with theft.

They were later released on a summons.

On September 26 at 1:25 p.m. police stopped the driver of a vehicle at Mall Road at Hwy. 36. On scene, they arrested a 33 year old male driver from Estes Park and charged him with DUI and DUI per se. He was transported to the Larimer County Jail.

The annual elk rut is in full swing and the bull elk are busy bugling, gathering their harems of females and challenging one another for breeding rights.

The elk are amazing and wonderous animals that are fun to watch but remember, these are wild animals competing for dominance and the bulls are especially "pumped-up" at this time of year.

Avoid potential accident, injury or death by always viewing from a safe distance. If an animal is carefully watching you and appears "jumpy," you are way too close.

Avoid eye contact and back away. Raise your arms to make yourself look larger.

For photographers, a good rule of thumb is "give them room, use your zoom. Keep you dog leashed and quiet. Do not allow them to bark, lunge at or chase wildlife.

Elk view your dog as a predator.

Never block traffic. "Elk jams" are a danger to everyone - blocking traffic creates all kinds of potentially dangerous situations. Be sure to pull completely off the roadway, out of the way of through traffic.

Never get between two bull elk. Situations can change very rapidly during the rut and you never want to be caught in between two rival animals or a bull and his harem.

Don't ignore the cows, they can still be dangerous, any time of year, not just during calving season.

Enjoy watching the rut but please remember - elk are wild animals. Be aware and be respectful. View quietly from a safe distance. Never attempt to touch or feed wildlife, it's dangerous and illegal.

There's a reason it's called wildlife.

SDA Honors Estes Valley Fire Protection Dist. With 2021 Collaboration Award Estes Valley Fire Protection District has been awarded a 2021 Collaboration Award from the Special District Association of Colorado (SDA).

The District received its award at the SDA Annual Awards Luncheon as part of the SDA Annual Conference which was held September 14-16 in Keystone, Colorado.

SDA presents the Collaboration Award to special districts that have established successful working relationships for the good of their citizens. This year’s award was presented to both Estes Valley and Grand Fire Protection District No. 1 for their work on last year’s mega fires.

In late summer and early fall of 2020, two of the largest wildfires in Colorado history roared to life. The Cameron Peak Fire started on August 13 in Larimer County and would grow to a final size of 208, 913 acres, making it the largest wildfire in state history. It destroyed 472 structures, including 231 residences, before finally being contained on December 2. On October 14, the East Troublesome Fire started in Grand County and eventually became Colorado’s second largest wildfire at a final size of 193, 812 acres. East Troublesome was contained on November 30, destroying 550 structures, including 336 residences, in its wake. Estes Valley Fire Protection District and Grand Fire Protection District No. 1 both played integral roles in their communities during these unprece-

dented disasters. The sheer size and nature of these mega fires necessitated a large-scale collaboration by a multitude of agencies, resources, and personnel.

Even beyond the immediate response to the fires, through previously established successful working relationships and a collaborative approach to planning years before, both of these districts helped their local communities survive the worst disasters they had ever experienced.

Ann Terry, SDA’s Executive Director, was thrilled to recognize the exceptional work of both districts. “The spirit of collaboration demonstrated by everyone not only last year, but also in the thoughtful and deliberate approach to planning in the prior years is a true testament to the success that can be achieved through partnerships.”

About the Special District Association of Colorado-The Special District Association of Colorado (SDA) is a statewide membership organization created in 1975 to serve the interests of the special district form of local government in Colorado.

Special districts fill a vital role in providing many of the basic services and public needs of the people of Colorado, including fire and rescue services; water and wastewater treatment and delivery; parks and recreation amenities; hospitals; libraries; and cemeteries. SDA has 2,325 district members and close to 265 associate members.

It seems like it was just yesterday that my mom’s shrinking flame flickered, faded, and went out. With the darkness she has left in her place, so she also leaves a long to-do list, intended by the universe to keep us busy so we don’t dwell too much on the ache of her absence.

We must notify distant family and friends; meet with the cremation center; plan a memorial service; cancel accounts; return the cable box; donate clothes; try to sell her furniture and then donate it too because there’s no demand for it; figure out what to do with her recipe box, her address book, her lapel pin that says, “ENJOY YOUR AGE, ” her house plant (she just had one, but we already have too many to take in another!), and the framed 8 x 10 blackand-white portrait of her when she was a girl with two long braids. (She kept an old chocolates box with those braids in it, long and intact after they were scissored off more than 70 years ago. What are we supposed to do with those? It seems disrespectful to get rid of them after she treasured them for 70 years. But nobody has a use for a box of 70-yearold braids.) We need to divvy up the Christmas decorations and figure out what to do with the knickknacks that have been around forever.

Take her owl bank (please). This seveninch tall coin bank—a blue owl with red roses painted on it—sat on Mom’s dresser in our parents’ bedroom for as long as I can remember. Mom filled it with dimes and when it got full, she would cash in the dimes and take the family out for a treat. She called it her “fun money. ” To feed the bank, Mom would buy our dimes from us. I suspect she used this exercise as a tool to teach us the value of saving. We fell for it. We would save every dime we pocketed, then take them

to her so she could trade two nickels, or a nickel and five pennies, or whatever it took (fair and square) to acquire our dimes for her owl bank. We all contributed and in turn, we all benefitted.

Mom is gone but her owl bank remains, tossed into a box full of odds and ends in our basement, staring into the distance with stoic black eyes. The rubber stopper in the bottom is held in place by layers of scotch tape, the coin slot is chipped, and he just looks tired since Mom isn’t feeding him with dimes. Nobody wants to see him gone but none of my siblings wants to keep him either.

I am happy to report Mom’s owl bank has found a new life. If you’ve heard of— or seen—a Bathtub Madonna, you’ll know what I mean when I say he is now a Bathtub Owl. I’ll explain.

When Joe and I first moved into our house, I entertained myself by poking around the yard to see what I would find. I’ve done this wherever I’ve lived, to get to know the lay of the land. I've found golf balls, pasque flowers, sand lilies, cactus, and in this yard, I unearthed a cast iron bathtub! It was 90 percent underground but when I spotted a bit of white something—maybe tubing? —poking above the soil, I had to dig at it to find out what was buried there.

After a short time with a shovel, I discovered that someone had buried a bathtub in our yard! It’s mysterious and quirky and ugly. (Don’t worry, it’s in a lower portion of the yard where no one can see it but us.) And I love it!

When my sisters were here and I showed it to them, Janet told me about Bathtub Madonna, also known as Mary on the Half Shell. A Bathtub Mary shrine is constructed by upending an old bathtub and burying one end, then placing a statue of the Blessed Virgin inside the shell.

No Madonna here; I now have a shrine to Mom’s owl bank. The bathtub is horizontal rather than vertical and the owl stands on top of the tub full of dirt, not inside the shell. But it’s my version of a bathtub shrine that serves two purposes: Mom’s owl bank has a home and I know what to do with dimes when I get them.

I’m laughing all the way to the owl bank.

Visit Estes Park Partners With Estes Park Vacationland Visit Estes Park (VEP) has partnered with Estes Park Vacationland, a GuestGuide Publication, to provide both in market and planning guests with the information they need to have the best experience possible while in town.

The partnership will produce a betterthan-ever 2022-2023 Estes Park Vacationland that meets the needs of guests both in town and those who are planning vacations to the area. Publisher Susie Masterson will continue to publish Vacationland. “GuestGuide has a reputation for publishing high-quality guidebooks with up-to-date information presented in a casual and fun manner,” said Masterson. “In this new partnership, I will continue to work closely with Rocky Mountain National Park, the US Forest Service, The Town of Estes Park, local experts, my advertisers, and now Visit Estes Park, to ensure the editorial is accurate, timely and meets the needs of these two audiences.”

Vacationland will see an increase in distribution as Visit Estes Park will mail copies of it to guests planning visits to the destination rather than the organiza-

Free Family-Friendly Climbing Day With Kent Mountaineering

Want to learn to rock climb? Kent Mountaineering and the Estes Valley Land Trust are hosting a free day of rock climbing at Mary’s Lake...no experience, and no equipment needed! Kids as young as five years old are welcome!

The climbing day is scheduled for Saturday, October 9, 2021, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and will take place southeast of Mary’s Lake off Mary’s Lake Road. Free parking is available around the lake with less than a five-minute walk to the rock climbing area.

This climbing area has multiple top rope routes and is ideal for climbers with beginner to intermediate skills. KMAC will provide all climbing gear (ropes, harnesses, helmets, and shoes). Trained and certified guides from KMAC will be available to belay and instruct climbers.

All climbers will sign a liability waiver and those under 18 will need a guardian

to sign the waiver to climb.

Nick Mollé Productions Receives Awards For Excellence

The PBS film, Nature of the Beasts, produced and directed by Nick Mollé and co-directed by Sean Doherty has been honored with two national awards.

Recognized with two prestigious Telly Awards for “Excellence in Wildlife and Nature” as well as “Excellence in Education”, the film is another milestone for Estes Park based Nick Mollé Productions. Along with many of the wild creatures of Rocky Mountain National Park, “Beasts” features the lovable pika, the little critter endemic to our tundra seen all summer gathering provisions for the long alpine winter.

The consequences of a changing climate along with escalating visitation numbers lay the framework for this extensive documentary as it explores some of our cherished natural places.

When asked about these awards, Nick stated, “Winning an award for Nature and Wildlife is a fantastic feeling but what makes this especially rewarding and even emotional for me is to be recognized for Excellence in Education. There is nothing more critical to the health of our planet than

education.

In expressing pride in this accomplishment, Nick said, “I want to recognize the roles of all who contributed, especially my fellow filmmakers, Sean Doherty and John Goerner. I also want to thank the dedicated work of the assisting National Park personnel, wildlife officers, concerned citizens, and the insightful scientists featuring pika specialist, Dr. Chris Ray.” Nick went on to say, “A film like ‘Beasts’ could never be done without the support of an amazing team. I want to thank them all and offer special gratitude to my friend Barb Marshall for her support of this film and of the arts in Estes Park.”

Photo Contest For 2022 Friendship Card For Local Discounts The Rotary Club of Estes Park is holding a photo contest for the 2022 Friendship Card for local discounts. There is no charge to enter, and the winner will receive photo credit on the card and two 2022 Friendship Cards. The deadline to submit photos is October 25, 2021.

Please email your favorite Estes Valley/RMNP photo (landscape view) in high resolution, jpg format to epfriendshipcard@gmail.com. A panel of judges will select the winning photo. Cropping and slight color correction is allowed for photos, but photos with anything added or taken away through a photo editing program will be rejected.

All decisions of the judges are final. The winner will be notified via email. The winning photo may also be used on other marketing materials for the Friendship Card.

Owner of the photo will not receive any other compensation other than photo credit and two 2022 Friendship Cards.

The Friendship Card debuted in 2019, replacing the long-time Rocky Card.

The Rotary Club of Estes Park re-established the card as a fundraiser for club projects and community grants. Since its debut, the Rotary Club has provided grants to Crossroads Ministries, the six area fire departments, Bright Christmas, Blue Santa, EVICS, Community Corner Café, Polio Plus, and a childhood enrichment program for underprivileged children in Albania.

“We knew going in that 2021 would be a challenging year, but our local merchants never cease to amaze me with the

continuous support they provide to the community. There were 78 local businesses that participated this year, and Rotary is very grateful for each one of them” stated Karen Thompson, Chairman of the Friendship Card project. “I would especially like to thank the Estes Park News for their continuous advertising throughout the year.”

To the community of Estes Park, EVICS Family Resource Center is here for you. We support children, families, and caregivers so all families have the ability to thrive in this beautiful mountain town.

Recently, we’ve been excited to grow our services to ensure that not only basic needs are met, but that those things that provide a quality life are accessible to everyone. Think about the elements of your life that you can count on to contribute to your happiness, your ability to live the life you choose, and to revel in the nature that ties us together in this place.

There are many people that EVICS Family Resource Center counts on to be able to deliver services. Recently, two events were held in support of our growing Family Development and vital Early Education/Childcare Scholarship pro-

grams. Thanks to the care and generosity of so many friends of EVICS Family Resource Center, we are able to energize these programs with much-needed funds.

On August 28, over 100 friends and families came in tie dye socks, sporting a high level of team spirit to enjoy the inaugural Kickin’ it for Kids kickball tournament! Thanks to community partners, generous team players, and tournament sponsors, over $12,000 was raised to replenish the highly utilized scholarship fund. This fund provides scholarships for local families so they may access quality child care and early education opportunities. Competition was intense on two fields with teams sponsored by Bank of Colorado, Estes Park Housing Authority (with nonprofit friends), YMCA, Alcoballics, Elementary School Teachers, Mermaids &

many years of service to children, families, and the community were recognized and she was celebrated with cheer!

You may have heard one of our favorite songs on Saturday, September 11. “Three Little Birds' ' was only one of the great Reggae numbers performed at the H&Palooza in Performance Park. New Exhibit Opening At The Art Center Of Estes Park

Bill Fritz, a native of Mitchell, South Dakota, and his wife, Dana, moved to Estes Park 24 years ago when he retired from a career as Executive Art Director and Creative Director for a large national advertising agency. He is a graduate of the Art Center College of Design in Los Angeles. Upon graduation Bill

moved back to the Midwest working in agencies in Minneapolis and Cedar Rapids, Iowa, winning awards in both print and television advertising. After moving to Estes Park, Bill’s interest switched from photography to oil painting. His work has been accepted into the “Lines into Shapes” juried show where he won First Place, Oil Painting, in 2012. He has won both Best of Show and Honorable Mention in the Cultural Arts Center annual Fall show.

For any of you that have a dog that has chased a porcupine, you know the potential impact on a dog’s face. Porcupine quills are not a laughing matter when they fill the snout of your pet, but did you know that very few animals can hunt the porcupine because of this unique defense? Mountain lions

and fishers have the quick and agile hunting skills to catch this prickly animal, but bobcats, lynx, coyotes, wolves, and wolverines may also try. Here are five more facts about the porcupine.

1. The porcupine is the second largest rodent in North America after the American beaver.

2. There are more than two dozen porcupine species in the world, but the common porcupine is the only one in

Rocky Mountain National Park and has the northern most range of all porcupine species.

3. The quills of porcupines are hollow with a sharp tip and barb on the end, causing them to embed into the skin of predators. A porcupine cannot shoot its quills, but they can detach if touched and can stand at attention to warn predators.

4. A single porcupine can have as many as 30,000 quills.

5. A porcupette (newborn porcupine)

has a full set of quills at birth. They are soft at birth to prevent injuring its mother but harden within an hour of birth.

EPHS Mountain Bike Team Starts Off Season With A Bang

The Estes Park Mountain Bike Team is off to an amazing start for their 2021 race season! The Estes Park MTB Team is a fall co-ed sport, open to 7th – 12th grade students. High school students on the Estes Park MTB Team race in the Colorado High School Cycling League with over 1,600 other students from across the state. The Estes Park MTB Team has been training for the 2021 race season since August 1st and their hard training efforts are showing after their first two races!

After not being able to race in person for 2020, their first race of the 2021 Colorado League season was an Individual Time Trial at Frisco Bay Invitational in Frisco, CO, on August 28th. Four Estes Park MTB Team high school student athletes gave it their all, racing the clock for two laps / 12 miles on the fun Frisco course. After a beautiful day of racing on Saturday: Senior JV Girls Racer Sydney Lewelling finished 7th place, Junior JV Girls Racer Isabella Putman finished 14th place, Junior JV Boys Racer Sam Honda

finished 18th place, and Sophomore Boys Racer Odin Rhode finished 4th place. Due to their amazing race times, the Estes Park MTB Team also took home the 3rd Place Team Trophy for their Division 3!

The Estes Park MTB Team’s second race of this 2021 Colorado League season took place on September 25th at the Haymaker Classic in Eagle, CO. Five Estes Park MTB Team high school student athletes competed on the hot and dusty Eagle XC race course for either three laps / 18 miles for Varsity or two laps / 12 miles for JV and Sophomore.

Senior Varsity Boys Racer Ben Ferree started in the back of the pack for his Varsity category and worked his way up to finish a stellar 11th place in his first ever three lap Varsity race. Junior JV Boys Racer Sam Honda an impressive 19th place in the largest category field against 102 JV Boys Racers. Sophomore Boys Racer Odin Rhode experienced the thrill of racing his first ever XC race day, and all the dust that comes with being the final category wave of the day, and finished an amazing 6th place in the field of 70 Sophomore Boys Racers. Senior JV Girls Racer Sydney Lewelling started off her 2021 XC race season with her first ever podium finish! Thanks to the incredibly strong showing of all five of the high school student athletes on the Estes Park MTB Team, the team brought home the 1st Place Team Trophy for their Division 3! A (Mock) Crime Scene Behind The School Written by: Arthur Elston

Hello citizens of Estes Park, the title

was not lying. On Tuesday, September twenty first the STEAM (Science, Tech-

nology, Engineering, Art and Math) class of Estes Park High School got to experience a crime scene in their very own parking lot. It was a mock crime scene set up by the school resources officer, Officer Plassmeyer and Detective Polucha.

The students of the STEAM class were given set jobs and were told to find out what hap-

pened exactly, there were illustrators, responders, detectives, picture takers and initial responding officers who collected and bagged more evidence.

All of this occurred to teach students about the career pathway into criminal justice and detective work, also to hopefully spark some interest in the young minds of criminal science. The event went well, the team uncovered footprints, a body and blood trails leading into a ditch, the students concluded that it was a

drug deal gone wrong, with one body on the ground with multiple stab wounds. If you didn’t read before, this was a mock crime scene. A rubber dummy was used in the making of this scene with fake blood. Nonetheless it was an amazing experience for the STEAM class, hopefully we will have more detectives and more young minds going into the justice field of work.

THANKS FOR SUNDAY…AND FOR SERVICE Let me begin by thanking all who were present Sunday for our special ‘Getting to know you…getting to know all about you’ activities. Many from our community and from elsewhere were present as we worshipped together Sunday morning. We were pleased to experience with all these those activities practiced by the early church described in the Bible. We met together as they did…

“To break bread”, in communion, as they did every first day of the week, with all sharing in commemorating the ‘body and blood’ of Christ’ in the Lord’s Supper. We all “sang and made melody in our hearts” as they did in their weekly services. We “continued steadfastly in the Apostles’ teaching”, like they did in studying the Word of God together. And we “laid by in store on the first day of the week” as they were commanded to, and regularly practiced. And we enjoyed fellowshipping together at the church building on Fish Creek Avenue, and in a meal and other activities at the Mustang Mountain Coaster after the service. And ‘a good time was had by all’. We thank all who were a part of that day of good things. I hope that all in our community enjoyed such a pleasant day of worship and fellowship where they were that special day.

If you missed being a part of such a day we invite you to join us on future Lord’s Day mornings. While dinner meals won’t always be served, you can enjoy all the other activities: worship like the Lord designed and the church patterned in the Bible book of Acts; fellowship at the building and ‘from house to house’; even some Coaster rides following services, courtesy of the Cody Walkers; and ‘souvenirs’ that we give you when you visit…a DVD of the wonderful wildlife seen in Estes area, and a Gospel music CD for your listening pleasure in your home or car. Be sure you ask for these when you join us in worship. We are here to serve God and bless your lives in the process.

Last week, as I thought about the good things I would enjoy on Sunday, my heart was deeply saddened by the news of the loss of one of Estes Park’s beloved public servants. Twice I have witnessed armored vehicles parked across from my house. The first time, several years ago, the meadow was filled with dozens of police vehicles, as they dealt with a situation that resulted in the loss of a citizen’s life by his own hand. This time the loss was of one of our community’s most faithful servants. Most all of you are already aware of this, but it deserves mention as we say ‘thanks’ to a man who gave so much of himself to us…and wanted to do more, had he lived on.

I am particularly sad when such happens because it reminds us that it results when a heart is overcome with hopelessness…concern about losing one’s family, one’s career, one’s health or survival, or the respect of people after years of building respect. Only our dear friend knows what was in his heart during those final hours, so please do not judge. He knows and God knows, others can only surmise. So, be appreciative of all he and his family have sacrificed for us and hold them up in your daily prayers.

Such an occurrence does, however, give us an opportunity to reflect on the subject of suicide and to think about its prevalence and possibility in every family’s life. Studies suggest that every person at some point will think about it as a solution for some difficulty in life. In the Bible, many of God’s ‘greatest’ thought about it: Elijah, Moses, Job, Jonah pondered the possibility. A prison jailor prepared to kill himself, until Paul stopped him. “Do thyself no harm” he was told, and he lived on. Even a young boy, in Jesus’ day, often “threw himself into the fire”. School Resource Officers will tell you of middle-school age students ‘cutting themselves’ and doing even life-threatening things.

What can be done when such threatens? Jesus can help, like He did in the case of the boy, and a man doing threatening things in a cemetery. He provides answers. You and I, in some cases, can help. First of all, by being forgiving of people who do unacceptable things, instead, trying to help them find acceptable ways of dealing with their struggle. Secondly, try to be present with them in their time of hopelessness, letting them know that there is hope for the future, and that you, and others, deeply care about them. Thirdly, refer them to counselors and other people who can give them hope.

May God help our dear friend’s family and our community to cope with our loss!

After a frosty start, players teed off on what turned out to be a magnificent day on the 18-hole mountain course. The tournament raised money for scholarships for Estes Park scholars. Congratulations to the winners!

Two teams succeeded in beating out their opponents to come in first place at

the Rotary Club of Estes Park 2021 Golf Tournament. With the Pretoria scoring system in place, certain mystery holes turned handicaps upside down and made it possible for anyone to win.

Congratulations to Ashley Doan, the Estes Park High School Student of the Week for October 1, 2021.

School activities Ashley enjoys is being a part of the school musical, Mama Mia and she is currently auditioning for AllState Choir. Her favorite class last year and this year is Civics. She would like to give a special shout out to Mr. Thomas and Mrs. Weaver for being such amazing teachers.

When asked her biggest achievement she said, “I think my biggest achievement within the school is winning student of the week. That might sound bad, but I won this award purely based on my personality and I’m proud of that.”

Outside of school, Ashley likes to sing, draw, hike, read, make movies, listen to music and be with her friends, 12th Grade boyfriend and family. Ashley works at two jobs, the Aerial Tramway and Omens. Omens is a shop in the Old Church Shops, right next to Red Rum and she said, “You should definitely come check it out!” She added, “I have two step-siblings and two blood siblings. I love them all very much and I wouldn’t trade them for the world. My dad is my hero, he’s the funniest person on earth and my stepmom always pushes me to do the best I can. My mom taught me a lot about the world and I’m very thankful for that. I’m also thankful for my boyfriend for helping me with school whenever I need it.”

When asked her favorite place to visit or vacation destination she said, “I love to go to Florida, because that is where my grandma, grandpa, and aunt on my mom’s side live.”

Ashley’s favorite quote is from Taylor Swift who once said, “No matter what happens in life, be good to people. Being good to people is a wonderful legacy to leave behind.” Ashley said, “I love this quote because it’s a Taylor Swift quote, duh. I always try my best to be kind to others. Obviously I am not a perfect person, but I do what I can. I love making people happy, that is what makes me happy.”

The best piece of advice she has ever been given is to always be yourself. If someone does not like you for you, then they aren’t worth having around.

After high school, Ashley says, “I’m definitely going to college and hopefully I will become a film editor.”

I usually try not to wax political in this column. However, two of my favorite senators went rafting together last week and I believe that deserves some notice.

Mitt Romney (Utah, Republican) and Michael Bennet (Colorado, Democrat) took an unusual crew on the trip down the Colorado River. They packed two rafts with government officials, water and environmental experts, ranchers and farmers, business and industry. Of course, due to limited capacity each invitee represented a different field. There is nothing like a trip down the river to allow for concentrated interaction with no fear of interruption while they discussed the lack of water throughout the western USA and the causes of this plight.

While the river generally runs a rapid 7,200 cubic feet per second, the flow measured only 2,700 (37½% of the norm), adding an hour and a half to the (normally) four hour trip, from Hittle Bottom Campground (just west of Fruta, CO) to Rocky Rapid Campground (just north-east of Moab, UT), giving the participants ample opportunity to observe the results of the drought.

The 1922 Colorado River Compact (AZ, CA, CO, NV, UT, WY) governs the flow (subject to ample water) and who benefits (by percentage). Farmers and ranchers use 87% of the water. However, as the river level recedes, 87% of the water is greatly reduced. In some areas, the normal high water line was well over the heads of the rafters. Agricultural endeavors will likely need to withdraw part of their land from production, reducing not only their income, but the food supply for the USA (and, thereby raising the price of food by supply and demand).

My opinion: city dwellers will need to admit that there is not enough water to

grow water-hungry Bluegrass lawns.

Drinking water and food production must take priority when water disappears.

Anyone who has boiled water knows that heat makes water evaporate. The warming Earth has caused a western drought. Yes, this has happened before, but this drought is so severe it is contributing to wildfires that destroy everything in their path. And the heat patterns effecting climate cause floods, hurricanes, and mudslides in various parts of the world. I do not have the money to invest in a rocket ship. I would like someone to do something to rescue Planet Earth – now!

Senator Romney and Senator Bennet stated that Washington DC should follow the traditional western approach of collaboration to address shared challenges. The drought affects everyone's food supply. The fires are not contained to California and each year they appear farther east.

On a related subject, students again staged a walk-out to call attention to climate change and the need for climate action (local, state, and national). Our young people, worried about the world they will inherit, have now discovered (thanks to Greta Thunberg) that they can sway others, even if they are not old enough to vote. (Here in the Estes Valley, we encourage our children, ages five-17, to practice vote in real elections and to convey their thoughts to those in charge.) Students on the Utah Capital steps chanted, “Do not let our planet die, climate change is not a lie.” Perhaps their efforts will aid Senator Bennet and Senator Romney in their efforts to do something about that.

Estes Recycles Paint This Saturday With PaintCare.org This Saturday October 2, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., Presbyterian Community Church of the Rockies (west entrance) Estes Recycles is working with the state-authorized organization PaintCare.org, to offer a free paint recycling drop-off event this Saturday, October 2, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Presbyterian Community Church of the Rockies (PCCR).

The PaintCare.org event is open to both households and businesses but you must pre-register at https://paint-estespark.eventbrite.com to pick a timeslot and avoid waiting in line. If you are unable to register online, or need more information, call PaintCare at (855)

PaintCare requires that paint products be in sealed, original containers with original manufacturer labels. Households may bring any amount of paint, stain and varnish, including deck and concrete sealers. No drums or containers larger than five gallons will be accepted. Limits apply to businesses. Not accepted: hazardous waste or chemicals such as paint thinner, solvents, motor oil, spackle, glue, adhesive, roofing tar, pesticides or cleaning chemicals. Early drop-offs at the church are not permitted and will be considered illegal dumping.

“Best of Enemies”: Acclaimed Movie Explores Themes Of Unity “Best of Enemies” is the 2019 feature film based on the true story of a reluctant partnership between a civil rights activist and a Ku Klux Klan leader. In 1971, Ann Atwater (Taraji P. Henson) and C. P. Ellis (Sam Rockwell) came together in Durham, North Carolina to discuss the issues of racial desegregation of their local schools.

What happened next would lead to surprising outcomes for them and their entire community.

The movie will be shown on Tuesday, October 5 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. on the big screen in Estes Park Town Hall. The free event is part of October’s Conflict Resolution Month program series hosted by the Estes Valley Library and Estes Valley Restorative Justice Partnership.

In a review for “All Movie Guide,” film critic Travis Norris praised the movie for

its inspiring story and message. “On the surface, ” he writes, “‘Best of Enemies’ is a film about desegregation. At its core, it is much more than that. It is proof that when people can put aside their differences and just talk, extraordinary change can happen. It is about friendship, love, and people…. A feel-good story that challenges its viewers, this film is a must-see slice of American history.”

“Best of Enemies” is rated PG-13. To help plan for seating, attendees are encouraged to sign up in advance through the library events calendar at estesvalleylibrary.org. The website also has a full list of October’s programs in the Conflict Resolution Month series.

Masks will be required at the film screening. Anyone interested may also check out a DVD of the film from the library.

A Naturalist’s To-Do List: 3-Part Ecology Series Begins October 11 “Owning a wrench does not make a person a plumber, and enjoying the outdoors does not qualify a person to manage ecosystems and their dependent wildlife,” says Kevin Cook. As a longtime naturalist, researcher, and instructor, he invites his audiences to explore ways to ensure that the most up-to-date and reliable biological and ecological knowledge are used to inform the decisions made about wild lands, the animals that inhabit them, and the humans who explore these scenic yet fragile treasures.

The library is hosting Kevin Cook for a three-part program series called “A Naturalist’s To-Do List.” The first talk is titled “Managing Wildlife by Knowledge rather than Opinion” and takes place on Monday, October 11 from 6 to 7:30 p.m.

For 37 years, Cook served as a nature columnist for the “Fort Collins Coloradoan” newspaper. He writes natural history columns for many other publications and leads wildlife observation tours. He teaches wildlife classes and presents regular lectures at several Colorado venues.

The October 11 talk will be followed by “A Different Way to Hug a Tree” on November 8 and “Here, Kitty, Kitty! Where are You?” on December 13.

Endorsing Stacy Ferree For School District Board To The Editor: It’s time to show your support for the school district by voting for open positions on the School Board. School board members make the decisions that determine the direction that educational priorities and methods take. So, you should do your research and feel invested in its outcome by casting your vote in this election whether you are directly impacted (with kids in the schools) or not.

After all, our community is what we make it, so we all are impacted, even if only indirectly, by the quality of education our school district provides.

That’s why we heartily endorse Stacy Ferree for a Director’s seat for the Board of Education. She is not a “rubber stamper” who goes along to get along. She does her research, deep dives into the issues, stands up and expresses her concerns when warranted, and is willing to

step up to press for answers and justifications when policies and procedures seem to be going off the rails. She has two kids who have gone through the system and has volunteered tutoring and coaching at the schools for many years, and definitely has her pulse on the atmosphere and attitudes in the district from a parental standpoint, as well as the students’ through the relationships she develops with the kids. This is a candidate who will never take the easy way out, and will always fight for what is best for making our Estes kids well educated, responsible and accountable, capable, and productive members of society.

Outside of mainstream education I have specifically instructed Alternative Education, English Language and Special Education students (School to Work coordinator).
