Bull Elk Checking Out Downtown Store

This week, a large 6 x 6 bull elk wandered into the Water Wheel Gift Shop on W. Elkhorn Avenue. Estes Park Police officers tried to shoo him away from the area, but he managed to maneuver his antlers to get through the doorway and he stood around inside the store for about five minutes before wandering out. Soon however, the elk found his way back inside and this time, he stayed for about 45 minutes before police were able to lure him back outside with an apple. See the video on our website. On our Facebook page, it reached 2.7 million people!

It’s a new year and Town is hitting the ground running on a number of fronts in 2017. Last month I shared what your Town did in 2016 and now I’d like to share what is on the plate for 2017, based on the Town Board’s 2017 strategic plan.

The Town Board’s strategic plan is built around eight key outcome areas that support the Vision and the Mission of the Town of Estes Park. Here are some of the key goals and objectives in each outcome area that we will be working hard on in 2017, sorted by each key outcome area.

ROBUST ECONOMY ● Revise the Town Sign Code to make it simpler and easier to understand, while retaining basic intent. ● Complete the Broadband detailed engineering plan. ● Complete the Downtown Neighborhood plan in partnership with downtown businesses and residents.

INFRASTRUCTURE ● Repair the Town portions of the Fish Creek Trail damaged by the flood. ● Construction of sidewalks and bike path along MacGregor from Wonderview north to the Town limits. The overhead power lines will be moved underground. ● Completion of the Estes Park Transit Facility Parking Structure at the Estes Park Visitor Center. ● Develop and explore implementation of paid parking downtown. ● Replace approximately 2,000 feet of old water mains. ● Develop a Stormwater Master Plan and feasibility study for a Storm Water Utility. ● Install three Dynamic Message Boards for traffic coming into town. ● Improvements to Parks irrigation systems.

EXCEPTIONAL GUEST SERVICES ● Continue the growth of events and activities at the Estes Park Events Center.

PUBLIC SAFETY, HEALTH AND ENVIRONMENT ● Work with Larimer County and other towns and cities on a comprehensive plan for solid waste management after the Larimer County Landfill becomes full (2025). ● Finalize the hydrology studies for all watersheds in the valley and pursue projects to mitigate flood impact and reduce costs and impacts to property owners. ● Continue stream restoration projects.

OUTSTANDING COMMUNITY SERVICES ● Work with the Estes Valley Recreation and Park District to integrate the Senior Center into the new Community Center. ● Work with private non-profit groups to transition the Meals-on-Wheels program with no interruption or loss of service to clients. ● Coordinate the Town’s Centennial celebrations. ● Continue to work on housing and child care issues. ● Continue to fundraise for Museum Collections and Research Facility.

GOVERNMENTAL SERVICES AND INTERNAL SUPPORT ● Implement a town-wide document management system. ● Implement new utility billing customer access software.

TRANSPORTATION ● Continue ongoing preventative maintenance activities on Town Roads.

TOWN FINANCIAL HEALTH ● Continue conservative budgeting practices and refine Town financial policies. ● Implement a capital planning process and capital plan for infrastructure needs.

As it prepares for the 2017 Estes Park Free Shuttle season, the Town of Estes Park is offering sponsorship opportunities to businesses and organizations wishing to provide support and receive a business listing on the shuttle system maps, shuttle interiors, and website.

Estes Park’s Free Shuttles transport approximately 100,000 riders per year to over 60 stops throughout Estes Park and to Rocky Mountain National Park. Each participating sponsor receives a recognition listing on 42,000 printed shuttle maps/schedules and at www.estes.org/sponsorshuttles. A sponsorship application is available at www.estes.org/sponsorshuttles. Applications must be received no later than March 17.

Sponsorships are available on a firstcome, first-served basis. Contributions will fund operational costs related to services offered by the Town’s free shuttles, supporting the continuation of free shuttle rides for approximately 100,000

guests and residents annually in the Estes valley.

Operating daily from June 24 through September 10 in 2017, shuttles make it convenient for residents and guests to leave their vehicles at a lodging facility, park-n-ride lot, or at home, and travel around town during the busy summer season. In addition, the Town’s trolley, the Elkhorn Express, offers free transportation during special events throughout the fall.

Another Year Of Record Visitation At Rocky Mountain National Park In 2016

4,517,584 Rocky Mountain National Park received its highest annual visitation in 2016. The park received a total of 4,517,584 visitors for 2016, which was an 8.7 percent increase over record visitation in 2015. All months in 2016 set visitation records except for December. This visitation represents a 32 percent increase since 2014, and a 40 percent increase since 2012.

Determining visitation is a difficult and imprecise effort. Visitation statistics are reliably accurate estimates and help park managers see overall trends. Fall visitation, particularly on weekends, continues to increase at Rocky Mountain National Park. Winter weekend visitation also continues to increase. The top ten busiest days in 2016 in order from first to tenth were: September 24, July 3, September 4, September 17, July 24, July 10, July 17, September 5, July 23 and July 30.

Many other national parks in the Rocky Mountain West also had increases in visitation last year. The National Park Serv-

ice celebrated its Centennial in 2016. Additional factors of the rise in visitation at Rocky include an increased population along the Front Range of Colorado.

Park managers will continue to address what effect this level of visitation will have on visitor and staff safety, resource protection, visitor experiences and operational capacity. This past summer and early fall, park staff restricted vehicle access in two specific areas, the Bear Lake Road corridor and the Wild Basin area, when parking areas filled and heavy congestion warranted. This occurred most weekends from late June through September of 2016. We will continue to implement and assess these short term efforts in 2017. Addressing day use for the long term will require a thoughtful and stakeholder-engaged planning process.

License Your Dog For 2017 - It’s Safe, Smart And It’s The Law! Town of Estes Park dog licenses for 2017 are now available at the customer service windows at Town Hall, 170 MacGregor Avenue. Licenses may also be acquired at Animal Medical Center of Estes Park at 1260 Manford Avenue and Animal Hospital of the Rockies at 453 Pine River Lane. Owners with dogs who reside within the Estes Park town limits are required by the Municipal Code to maintain a current dog license and a current rabies vaccination through a veterinarian.

Licenses cost $5 for each spayed or neutered dog. Licenses for unaltered dogs cost $15. Owners must provide the rabies vaccination registration number that was provided with the vaccination. A tag is issued with the license which must be attached to the dog’s collar at all times. If a dog is found at-large and not licensed, the owner may be cited with municipal charges and impound fees.

Dog licensing provides several important health and safety benefits, including: • Faster reunification of lost pets with their owners, reducing animal stress and

health and safety risks • Reduced sheltering needs and lower euthanasia rates • Improved ability to plan and deliver animal services because the size, type and location of the dog population is known • Improved ability to enforce Town ordinances because owners can be identified and held accountable for the behavior of their pets Larimer County requires that dogs living in unincorporated areas of the county maintain current rabies vaccination as well as a county pet license. On January 17 at 2:12 a.m. police stopped the driver of a vehicle at Moraine Ave. and Elm Street for failure to stop at a stop sign. The driver was a 36 year old male from Estes Park who was charged with DUI, DUI per se and failure to yield at a stop sign and he was transported to Larimer County Detention Center.

On January 17 at 4:53 p.m. police received a report of a harassment at 164 Stanley Circle Drive. On scene, a 37 year old male from Estes Park was arrested and charged with harassment and domestic violence against a 35 year old vic-

tim. The 37 year old male was transported to Larimer County Detention Center.

On January 18 at 4:38 a.m. police arrested a 21 year old male from Estes Park in the 1200 block of Manford Ave. and charged him with second degree burglary, third degree burglary, criminal tampering and theft and transported him to the Larimer County Detention Center.

On January 22 at 12:44 a.m. police arrested a 29 year old male from Estes Park in the 1040 block of Big Thompson Ave. who was found to be wanted on a warrant. The warrant was for failure to appear on a DUI charge and a probation violation for a Schedule 1 charge. He was transported to Larimer County Detention Center.

Man Rescued Off Trail In Alberta Falls Area A 58-year-old man from Grand Forks, North Dakota named Sheldon Seaborn, spent an unplanned night in the backcountry of Rocky Mountain National Park after he became lost last Saturday, January 21, while hiking. He was found in deep snow approximately 300 yards off the North Longs Peak Trail, south of Alberta Falls. It was extremely fortunate that he was discovered that morning by two visitors who were skiing in the drainage.

Park rangers reached the man and provided advanced medical care. He was

suffering from hypothermia and additional injuries related to exposure. He was evacuated via a toboggan litter to Glacier Gorge Trailhead where he was taken by an Estes Park Medical Center ambulance to the Park and Ride area along Bear Lake Road. He was then flown by Flight For Life to University of Colorado Hospital.

Rocky Mountain National Park’s Search and Rescue team was assisted by Larimer County Search and Rescue in the carryout operation. Over fifteen people were involved in the rescue operation.

The Estes Valley Fire Protection District (EVFPD) Chief Officers and Safety Officers generally respond in their personal vehicles (POV). Fire fighters generally respond to medical calls in their personal vehicles; as this allows for faster response by officers and medical personnel to assess the emergency and provide medical care.

EVICS Receives Grant From McInnes Charitable Trust Estes Valley Investment in Childhood Success (EVICS) was the recent recipient of a $20,000 grant from the Sally Brown McInnes and John “Mac” McInnes Charitable Trust. EVICS applied for the competitive grant in September 2016 and was notified of their selection in late December.

The McInnes Charitable Trust was created by Sarajane “Sally”Brown McInnes.

Mr. and Mrs. McInnes were residents of Colorado and were passionate about providing for the welfare of animals and children’s health and overall well-being.

The mission of the Trust today is to perpetuate the generosity of the McInnes family by supporting charitable causes with a preference toward organizations located in or serving Colorado that promote animal welfare, children’s health, education and empowerment.

Each grant cycle, the McInnes Trust allocates a percentage of grant dollars to educational purposes. It was noted by the McInnes Trustees that EVICS’ work aligns well with the Trust’s mission to promote social and educational well-being of children, including programs and activities that support and empower atrisk children. EVICS Director, Nancy Almond, commented: “We are thrilled to receive this generous support and will put it to good use supporting and promoting quality early childhood services

for all families in our community. ” The grant to EVICS will be used to support the organization’s Childcare Scholarship Program. The average cost for full time childcare in Estes Park is $700 per month for one child, an expense that is out of reach for many working families.

In 2016, EVICS distributed over $27,000 in childcare scholarships to assist families with childcare and preschool fees, making it possible for families to live and work in Estes Park. Studies have shown that when families have consistent access to dependable, quality childcare, children are better prepared for school success, and parents are able to be present and productive at work, provide for their families, and contribute to the local economy.

EVICS is a 501c3, non-profit agency serving Estes Park since 2006. EVICS offers free childcare referrals, parent education services, training and support to licensed childcare providers and teachers, and the childcare scholarship assistance program. Families are encouraged to contact EVICS for assistance with any early childhood needs. Community groups are encouraged to contact EVICS to learn more about early childhood needs and services in our community, and how you can help. A strong, sustainable community depends on the well-being of its children. Prioritizing children’s needs results in social and economic impacts that benefit us all.

Estes Park EDC Launches Childcare Services Committee The Estes Park EDC is pleased to announce that its Board approved the formation of the Childcare Services committee created to directly address the critical need for affordable and accessible childcare in the Estes Valley at their January 19th board meeting. “I am excited to be working with such a great team on a task that I feel is critical to the economic stability and growth of the Estes Valley,” said Michael Moon, the committee’s chair.

The Committee’s first agenda item is to facilitate creation of a comprehensive needs assessment of child care requirements and the impact of underserved preschool services upon our economy and schools. Following this, a detailed business plan will be developed to identify methods to meet the identified needs. It is expected that the Committee will identify project partners and facilitate identifying and funding an experienced consultant to complete these planning documents.

The Estes Valley Economic Development Strategy, completed in November 2015, identified workforce housing and childcare as priorities for local economic vitality. In February of 2016, Rees Consulting completed a housing needs assessment on behalf of the Estes Park Housing Authority. That document is encouraging both employers and property owners to consider workforce housing projects. The Needs Assessment also included 11 major recommendations for how to improve workforce housing in Estes Park, with some steps already being undertaken or completed. A similar assessment and strategic planning process for childcare services can facilitate forward progress on childcare.

Once the needs assessment and busi-

ness plan are completed, the committee plans on identifying a project partner, and then supporting the development of the facility and program identified in the business plan. The final outcome could be an expanded program from an existing nonprofit or childcare provider, or creating a new provider to expand childcare services in the Estes Valley. “Quality child care is at the root of our young workforce families’ difficulties living here, said committee vice-chair Charley Dickey. “I am excited about creating a solution that will allow the younger generations to live, work and play here in Estes Park.”

Expanded childcare can make a positive difference. “High quality, early childhood education has the greatest payout of any investment we can make.

If employees can’t find quality care for their children, they won’t work for you,” said Kristen Berg, a child education and care specialist who works at EVICS. They won’t move to our community, or they’ll be forced to move away. They might have to consider quitting their job to stay home with their children because they have no other option,” said Berg.

“As a community, we must do better for our future. I'm excited to stop simply talking about this problem and do something about it!”

The committee is chaired by Michael Moon, and Charley Dickey serves as vice-chair. The team is completed by Jose Almeida, Kristen Berg, John Bryant, Travis Machalek, and Dr. Tim McLemore. “Estes Park EDC is pleased that such a talented and diverse group of individuals is willing to undertake this project on behalf of our community,” said Jon Nicholas, President/CEO of Estes Park EDC.

Estes Valley Recreation And Park District Seeking Members For New Senior Advisory Committee Estes Valley Recreation and Park District (EVRPD) announced today the establishment of a new Senior Advisory Committee (SAC) to counsel and assist the District with the planning and communication of senior services at the new Estes Valley Community Center (EVCC).

The District has launched a search for committee members, which will include five members appointed by the EVRPD Board of Directors. At least two members on the Committee will be appointed from the membership of Estes Park Senior Citizens Center, Inc. To be considered for the committee, applicants must be full-time residents of the District, a 320-square mile region including Estes Park and the surrounding area. Applicants must also be at least 55 years of age at the time of applying.

“The committee will help the transition of senior services be successful and ensure that seniors’ voices are heard in a new model of delivery through EVRPD,” said Beth Headley, Senior Services Program Coordinator.

In August 2016, the Town of Estes Park and the Estes Valley Recreation and Park District entered an intergovernmental agreement to transfer senior services from the Town to EVRPD upon the opening of the Estes Valley Community Center, which is anticipated to be January 2018. The agreement includes the establishment of a Senior Advisory Committee.

The charge of the SAC includes: - Advise EVRPD staff about the delivery of various senior recreation and lifelong learning opportunities that provide recreational, social, educational and health services to senior participants of the EVCC; - Provide recommendations to EVRPD staff about EVCC policies; - Participate in advocacy activities for older adults and collaborate as appropriate with agencies that serve

older adults in Estes Valley; - Appoint appropriate subcommittees as necessary to further the work of the Center’s programs and efforts of the Committee; - Identify problems of service and recommend appropriate solutions; - Be a channel of communication between staff, senior participants and the senior community; - Provide feedback to staff on the assessment of current and future needs of the senior community for program planning.

“One important role of the SAC will be to stay abreast of evolving local and national trends and services for a wide spectrum of seniors ranging from the younger retirees to the old-old in the Estes Valley,” said Lori Mitchell, Senior Services Manager.

Event organizers gave guidance: if we were going to make a sign, make it constructive, not destructive. The overall message for the day was reminiscent of John F. Kennedy’s “Ask not what your country can do for you; ask what you can do for your country.” I like that.

So I joined millions of women and men on Saturday to honor women’s causes and to foster positive change. The gathering I attended tallied close to 10,000 while friends in Denver joined more than 100,000 marchers. (Some estimate the total at closer to 200,000 but I am going with a more conservative number to be nice. I’m a peacekeeper, remember?)

Although my friend was looking forward to being surrounded by thousands of women, he was “concerned” that there would be no porta-potties for men. There was a white sheet on the ground in front of each unisex door. “A nice, feminine touch,” Joe said. (A side note: every time I see a porta john I think of the Flood of 2013.

Can’t help it. Probably will forevermore.)

What I liked about this worldwide rally was its organic nature. It was all for one, one for all. Live and let live. Nobody was standing on a street corner handing out pre-printed posters. Every sign I saw was handmade and unique: Love, not hate, makes America great.

Injustice anywhere is a threat to all. (quoting Martin Luther King, Jr.) I hate crowds but this is too important.

Peace.

Tweet women with respect.

Always choose love.

The beauty of the world lies in the diversity of its people.

We the people respect and protect each other.

Love is louder.

Be kind.

If the day’s crowd had been a traditional Midwestern demographic, the event could have been as bland as a piece of Wonder Bread. But I saw Muslim. Black. Hispanic.

Jewish. White hair. Purple hair. Blue lipstick. Lots and lots of pink hats. An infant asleep on the shoulder of her bushybearded daddy. People with walkers and in wheelchairs. Male, female and in-between.

People of every shape and size mingled together, taking selfies, hoisting signs, texting, and cheering as each speaker offered optimism and inspiration for the future.

One woman told us that even though her sixteen-year-old daughter couldn’t be there, she made her mom’s sign. I was thrilled to see so many girls with their parents and was impressed with what our youth are doing today. GIRL POWER! one sign said.

I am proud of my aunt who marched at the Washington D.C. rally. Her experience was quite a bit different from mine (four hours driving in the dark, an hour-long line for coffee, and a lot more people). One of her travel companions, a Welsh/Brit who is now an American citizen, took notes (edited for brevity): The march was scheduled to go along Independence Ave. It was PACKED. The four of us were hanging onto each other's belts/straps/coat tails like mothers with toddlers, burrowing through jam-packed crowds. We got out from the crowd to sit on a concrete wall and take a deep breath or two and to watch the incredible crowds with their signs. Where were they going? They seemed to be heading straight into the sardine can we had just extricated ourselves out of. But they kept on coming for nearly an hour.

We were eager to get to the Mall—the symbolic centre of the action. It was tricky. Every which way we turned we faced either crowd barriers or dense, dense crowds. Eventually we circled round and reached the Capitol.

We came back down the Mall from the other direction. Over there on the other side we could see the crowd surging down Independence. We met it as it crossed over the Mall toward the White House. More hanging on.

More burrowing.

There was very little police presence at all, anywhere. Everyone was happy and shouting and carrying their banners (i.e., I'm a Republican; I'm Pro-Choice). We saw and heard Gloria Steinem plus great speakers from National Resources Defense Council, MomsRising, etc. plus Bob Bland, one of the organisers with her brand new baby.

Finally about 3:00 p.m., we got to the big M metro sign [to head home] only to find the elevator was on the other side of the crowd and the stairs were a block away. This is where we saw the first itsy bitsy bit of friction. While awaiting the next open door, I suggested to the man in front of me that we let “that mother with the tiny baby and her stroller in first.” He was at least 20 years younger than me. "I've been waiting ages," he replied. Two minutes later he admitted, “Maybe you're right.” Phew! The Dark Side vanquished. Mom and baby got in, only just avoiding being crushed by the massed ranks of tired marchers pushing from behind, hoping this time it was their turn too, if only they could press hard enough.

It was a jolly train back to Franconia. The whole train was bubbly with excitement and discussing numbers: we all accepted the 'myth' of 1.2 million. It vindicated our weary legs and our stirred emotions on the long journey. People in front of us were heading back to Phoenix!, we met people from Michigan, and earlier, on the way north at the gas station, some incredible women who were changing in the loo had started off sixteen hours earlier from Fort Meyers, Florida. In a bus.

It was a Great Day. We were not disappointed.

Since the 1950s, the Fine Arts Guild of the Rockies has built on its tradition of excellence by providing experience in the performing and visual arts through participation, education, and outreach. Here are some of the ways we put this mission into practice: • We hold Summer Youth Theatre Camp, a two week intensive workshop that results in an amazing junior musical.

This year, enrollment was large enough for two musicals (Jungle Book & Into the Woods). Students from our program go on to perform in many community events, including EPHS plays. They say that the youth camp gives them a great intangible gift, self confidence.

• We offer Estes Park School District R3 free programs such as the professional Shakespeare/anti-bullying event out of Denver which has been consistently approved by school administrators and students.

• We contribute annually to the Estes Park High School music program by purchasing needed items, such has concert wear and instrument mouthpieces.

• We grant college scholarships for Estes Park High School seniors who wish to study the arts.

• We fund six free concerts in Performance Park that provide entertainment for visitors and residents every summer.

Estes Park Memorial Observatory Program The Estes Valley Astronomical Society (EVAS) in conjunction with The Estes Park Memorial Observatory is offering a free public open house/star night on Saturday, January 28th, 7 p.m. The goal of EVAS is to promote amateur astronomy and education in the Estes valley.

Our returning speaker for the evening is one of our EVAS club members, Dr. Gordon MacAlpine and the title of his talk will be: Earth’s Climate Past, Present, and “Back to the Future.”

This public talk, supplemented with visual aids, is intended for a general audience. We will examine changing climatic conditions on Earth, from its origin just over 4.5 billion years ago to the present.

In astronomy, we employ our telescopes to look out into space and back in time to view the Universe as it existed in the past.

Then we can use the past to extrapolate into the future in order to understand how the Universe’s overall “climate” will continue to cool over time. With the Earth, we can also use past atmospheric and associated climate conditions to envision where the present rapidly-changing composition of our atmosphere may be leading us. As we take such a look “back to the future,” the Earth will still be

here, but it will probably be significantly altered.

Our speaker is Dr. Gordon MacAlpine a retired astronomer, physicist and a member of the EVAS club. He received a BA in physics from Earlham College and a Ph.D. in astronomy from the University of Wisconsin. After a stint at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, NJ, he joined the faculty at the University of Michigan where he was a Professor of Astronomy until 2000. Then he accepted the Zilker Distinguished Professor of Physics chair at Trinity University in San Antonio, TX, where he continued teaching astronomy, physics, and environmental science until his retirement in 2012.

Gordon and his wife, Barbara, recently moved to Estes Park.

The observatory is just north of the high school at 1600 Manford Ave. Park in the teacher’s parking lot between the high school and the observatory. The doors will open at 7:00 p.m. and the presentation will start at 7:30 p.m. Weather permitting after the presentation, visitors will be invited to look through our large telescope at various celestial objects.

‘WHO YOU GONNA CALL?’ Perhaps when you read the title you thought about the old Ghost Busters movies of years gone by. I enjoyed them like you probably did…for a number of reasons. One, of course, was that, when no one else could solve the problem they were there to rally to the cause and defeat those ‘spirits’ and save the community. They were ‘faithful’.

However, the question is important and relevant in our time as well. There are times when we ‘do need to call’ someone, and ‘who are you going to call?’ A friend of mine received a call recently from folks who had had a bad experience and needed some special help…help that involved some sacrifice on his part. They knew exactly ‘who to call’…who would be receptive to that call and willingly respond to meet the need. I jokingly reminded him that I now knew exactly whom to call in a time of distress. We both laughed…but we both knew that each would be there for the other when needed.

What about you? Who you gonna call? Who would be responsive, caring and willing to make a sacrifice to assist? In Sunday’s Bible Class we analyzed ‘faithfulness’: a Fruit of the Spirit. This is a characteristic needed in people we look to for help. Have they shown ‘faithfulness’ to help in times past? Wise Solomon wrote: “Like a bad tooth or a lame foot, is reliance on an unfaithful person in times of trouble.” I’ve shared with you about attending a party for grieving spouses, whose wives/husbands had died. The group leader welcomed me with some surprise. She said, loudly enough for all to hear, “But then, as we all know, when trouble comes you can count on your friends, but your church will let you down!” Those suffering ‘bad teeth’ or ‘lame feet’ nodded sadly.

What about you? Who do you know in your circle of relationships that you could call on in a time of crisis and know that they would come running to do what they could to help?

Perhaps an even more crucial question that we need to face is: “Am I one whom someone could (and would) call on in a time of crisis and know that I would do what I could to help in their time of need?” It’s easy to justify our failure by: “I wouldn’t know what to say? I wouldn’t know what to do? I might make things worse!” However, those are just ‘rationalizations’ and not valid reasons for not being there for them.

We live in a society where many feel totally alone when struggling. What happens then? All too often we learn soon enough. A newscast tells about someone who opted out of life, because he/she had ‘no one to call’…no one who was there to listen, grasp what the issue was, and offer a hand to help or a word of encouragement and help. One Wyoming young person left a note. It said: “I refuse to live in a world that doesn’t care.”

What’s my point in this article? Do a mental review of people you call your dear friends and see which of those would be people on whom you would call…because someday you will need to call. If no one’s name surfaces, perhaps it’s time to develop a new circle of friends. At the same time, take a deep look into your own heart and examine how ‘faithful’ you are and how committed to those with whom you regularly interact. Look for opportunities to help meet their needs…even when they don’t ask. Jesus once said, “He that is faithful in little will also be faithful in much.” That will insure that they know ‘who to call’ when tough times come. Let’s be ‘faithful’…and care.

The EPSCC will be working in cooperation with the EVRPD to continue providing the programs and activities currently offered at the Senior Center, enhanced by the facilities to be provided at the new Community Center. These will include an indoor walking track, lounges, and multigenerational programs.

Foster Peace And Mindfulness With Group Meditation The Town of Estes Park’s Senior Services Division and local meditation and dream teacher Mary Jo Heyen will continue to offer Group Meditation on the first Thursday of each month from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. The next meeting will take place on Thursday, February 2 at the Estes Park Senior Center, 220 Fourth Street. The group is open to all those interested, and no prior meditation experience is necessary. Each class will include an exploration of issues and challenges that may arise in developing one’s own practice, a guided meditation, as well as silent meditation.

Learn How To Start Veggies From Seed With The Estes Valley Community Garden Seed catalogues are arriving and gardeners are dreaming and planning the next season’s crop of fresh produce. The Town of Estes Park’s Senior Services Division and the Estes Valley Community Garden, Inc. invite the community to learn about starting veggies from seed at high altitude. This free program will take place on Tuesday, February 7 at 1:00 p.m. at the Estes Park Senior Center.

The program will be presented by Floyd Wright, Estes Valley Community Garden Manager and local gardener. According to Floyd, this program will answer important questions about starting seeds indoors: how, when, and which ones? Should you transplant seeds or not? You’ll also learn how to do direct seeding throughout the growing season.

Floyd Wright is an avid life-long gardener who considers all things food and agriculture his passion. Floyd completed a master’s degree in horticulture from CSU with a focus on small fruits production and germplasm conservation. Floyd spent 3 years as a market gardener growing rare heirloom vegetable varieties for restaurants and farmer’s markets. After the Colorado drought of 2001, Floyd joined the workforce of a global food distributor in sales and marketing. Floyd has spent time volunteering on a vine-

Living Well With Chronic Conditions

UCHealth to offer free six-week series at the Estes Park Senior Center The Town of Estes Park’s Senior Services Division and University of Colorado Health are collaborating to offer a free six-week series called Living Well with Chronic Conditions. Classes will be held on Wednesdays, February 15 through March 22, from 1:30-4:00 p.m. at the Estes Park Senior Center. Space is limited; please call or stop by the Senior Center, 220 Fourth Street, to register.

Classes will be taught by Cindy Ballinghoff, RN, BSN, from the Estes Park Medical Center, and Katie Plassmeyer, RN, NP-C, from Timberline Medical Clinic.

According to Cindy and Katie, this class is geared toward anyone with any chronic condition, which could include high blood pressure, heart problems, high cholesterol, diabetes, arthritis, multiple sclerosis, lupus, asthma, obesity, plus many others. Subjects that will be covered in the class include: 1) techniques to deal with problems such as frustration, fatigue, pain and isolation; 2) appropriate exercise for maintaining and improving strength, flexibility, and endurance; 3) appropriate use of medications; 4) communicating effectively with family, friends, and health professionals; 5) nutrition; 6) decision making; and 7) how to evaluate new treatments.

Cindy Ballinghoff received her Bachelors of Science in Nursing in 1982 and has been employed by Estes Park Medical Center since 1990. Prior to moving to Estes Park, Cindy was a hemodialysis, ICU, cardiac rehabilitation, and hospice nurse. She has worked with diabetics since 2004. Currently, she is one of the telephone triage nurses for Estes Park Medical Group and still works in the Emergency Department as a staff RN. Katie Plassmeyer is a Nurse Practitioner and Care Manager at Timberline Medical Clinic where she helps patients with chronic diseases become better selfmanagers while assisting with navigation of the increasingly complex healthcare system. She was trained last August in the Stanford Program of Living Well courses where she became certified to teach this course, Living Well with Diabetes, and Living Well: Surviving and Thriving after Cancer.

Career Day Theme 2017: “Explore To The Ends Of The Earth!”

Last Friday, January 20th, marked the annual Career Exploration Day for the Class of 2021. With the guidance of Captain Scott Davis, the 8th grade teachers and over forty other adult professionals, the 8th grade students enjoyed interacting with professionals with careers ranging from A-Z. The Estes Park Event Center hosted the all-day event providing support throughout the day. This amazing class of 2021, led by several exceptional students, helped create the theme for the event, provide motivational posters and organized their peer groups for the day. Students and teachers walked to the Event Center and heard an informational message from Captain Davis about exploring different employment paths connected to each career and how to ask questions of each professional at the event. Some of the careers represented on Friday included: acupuncture, airline careers, culinary arts, cosmetology, small businesses, law, mechanic, medicine, emergency services, military careers, law enforcement, park ranger, teaching professions, veterinary medicine, video production, water conservation and more! Students from Eagle Rock School helped organize the event along with middle school staff. In addition to the career fair, students participated in various career exploration activities, working in small groups in a workshop setting. When asked about their biggest takeaway from the event, one student said, “I didn’t realize how much work you have to do to reach your career dream.” Another student reported what surprised them: “How fun the day was and how interactive.”

“Money Matters” by Michael and Susan Parker is about the late Mr. Hammond who spent twenty years printing $20 bills on a printing press he built in the basement of Monet Manor. After his death, his faithful retainer George and his daughter Annie, continued the family business for Mr. Hammond’s widow who recently passed away. Contrary to her promise to leave the manor

emphatic about turning it into a retirement home for ladies. Determined to keep the manor, Annie invites an old friend and sorority sister, Charmaine Beauregard, to play the role of a ghost, to help convince Bud that the manor is unsuitable for a retirement home because it is haunted.

Yes, it’s January, it’s cold and windy and there is lots of ice and snow around everywhere. That means that the Girl Scout Cookie Sale must be about to start, as it does every year at this time. This year is no exception. The sale opens this Sunday, January 29th and ends on Sunday, March 12.

During this time, Estes Park Girl Scouts will be visible in many locations around town, selling cookies directly to family, friends, tourists and community members alike.

Registered Girl Scouts in Estes Park range in age from kindergarten through 8th grade, and they can sell cookies by various means. Booth sales are when a group of girls from a troop find a good location in various places around Estes Park and set up a table or bench or even make a special set-up where the cookies can be attractively displayed and sold to customers. Girls can sell cookies on-line,

by email, on the phone or door-to-door.

Just know that the cookies will be delivered directly into your hand when you purchase them. No ordering and later delivery is needed at this time through Girl Scouts of Colorado.

For 100 years (yes, for sure, this year is the 100th anniversary of the national sale of Girl Scout Cookies!) Girl Scouts have been selling to translate your dollars into “incredible opportunities for girls to do extraordinary things.” When you support the sale, your dollars help power new, unique and amazing experiences for all of the awesome girls who sell Girl Scout Cookies.

According to the Girl Scouts of Colorado (GSCO) web site, “Whether it’s a trip she’ll never forget, a service project that will change her community forever, or the opportunity to build a lifetime of memories at camp, Girl Scout Cookies can help make it happen!”

Money earned from the cookie sale can help fund a trip to our nation’s capital, community service projects, summer trip or resident camp, travel to World Centers abroad, or troop-selected charitable donations. The more cookies you buy, the more you help today’s girls develop into tomorrow’s leaders.

Let’s give you a run-down on the types of cookies for sale this year, in case you’ve forgotten! Thin Mint are the all-time favorite variety; Samoas, Tagalongs, Trefoils, Do-si-dos, Savannah Smiles help round out the list. For the 2nd year, gluten-free Toffee-tastic cookies are offered. And then, the newest specialty cookie, created to celebrate the 100th anniversary, is Girl Scout S’mores, created in sandwich-style with a crunchy graham cookies with creamy chocolate and marshallowy fillings. What could be more Girl-Scouty than that!? More on the types and styles of these cookies in the weeks to come.

Estes Valley Sunrise Rotary Community Grant Program The Estes Valley Sunrise Rotary (EVSR) invites proposals from 501 (c) (3) or other charitable organizations in the Estes Valley for grants to support programs and projects to enhance the Estes community.

The EVSR contributes primarily to charitable non-profit organizations in the community. These organizations extend benefits and services to a wide variety of programs, and provide aid to our diverse local population. Donations are made to organizations only after careful study and review by Rotary representatives.

The EVSR will not consider requests for funds to retire existing debts, cover salary expenses, general operating expenses or any other costs the applicant is already obliged to pay. The EVSR does

not fund large capital projects, except when the funds requested are for a very identifiable piece of the project that falls within the purpose of and has high Rotary interest. The EVSR does not contribute to endowments, development funds, other foundations for their general funds, fund raising events, or for general operating expenses.

Grant awards are made for programs and projects as small as a few hundred dollars and as large as a few thousand dollars.

Trio Cordilleras At Next Music Festival Concert January 29

The Music Festival is excited to welcome back the Trio Cordilleras with spirited tango dancers and music from Spain and Latin America. The Trio will be joined with Argentine Tango dancers, Cindy Gottlob and Sean Ericson. The Trio has captivated audiences since 2006 and has premiered works from composers of the Americas and Spain; they regularly perform in Colorado.

He received a Doctorate degree in Piano Performance from the University of Minnesota and undergraduate degrees from the University of Maryland in Baltimore and the Universidad Nacional de Cuyo in Argentina.

Elizabeth Kipper, violinist, made her solo debut at the age of seventeen at Carnegie Hall with the New York Youth Symphony performing the Barber Violin Concerto. After graduating from the Juilliard School, Ms. Kipper was a member of the Fort Worth Symphony and the Colorado Symphony. She is currently a member of the Boulder Piano Quartet.

Thomas Heinrich, cellist and a graduate of Eastman and the Cleveland Institute of Music, made his solo debut with the Vermont Symphony at age sixteen. A

member of the Colorado Symphony since 1997, Mr. Heinrich also serves as principal cellist of the Grand Teton Music Festival Orchestra. He is a founding member of the Boulder Piano Quartet.

Sean Ericson first got addicted to dancing in college at UC Santa Cruz.

He tried every style he could find, including modern dance, ballet, ballroom and even break dancing. However, Sean found his true love in Tango. Two years ago Sean moved to Colorado, where he was lucky enough to meet his wonderful partner Cindy Gottlob. Apart from dancing, Sean is currently an economics PHD candidate at CU Boulder.

Cindy Gottlob, formerly a ballerina with the Joffrey Ballet, continues to find connection and inspiration in dancing through Argentine tango. She has studied with some of the best teachers in the country, and pursues the art form at its highest potential.

I was recently looking at some interesting literature regarding the concept of retirement. I think you’d be surprised to see what I learned.

Retirement by definition means ending.

Most of us would think of the default definition, used as a verb, meaning leaving one’s job and ceasing to work. Some dictionaries define retirement as “the act of retiring, withdrawing, or leaving: the state of being retired.” How about this one? “Seclusion from the world; privacy.”

After reading all of these definitions and terms I knew this did not define anyone that I’ve ever known who has retired.

It certainly doesn’t describe our Estes Valley community. While many of our friends and neighbors have moved along from a job or a career, it does not mean that they are retired in the strict definition of the word.

Based on many of today’s projections, at the age of 65, you potentially have another 25 years of active living waiting for you – and the quality of those years will be influenced by your attitude, approach

and habits. After reading this information, I came across a wonderful new word to add to my vocabulary – “refirement.”

“Refirement” may be defined as the act of igniting your life and living in the moment to build a successful future that holds exciting, empowering, and energizing adventures. “Refirement” is a time to make an entrance or debut into something new.

“Refirement” can be taking your collective knowledge, wisdom, and passion for life and experience some new adventures.

“Refirement” can be about life-long learning and continuing on a path of enriching your life through learning and skill development.

I invite all of you to stop by the library this winter to explore our programs and services, materials and devices. Challenge yourself to learn something new, use your critical thinking skills, be creative and playful or simply read a new book and experience a new story. We hope that you will find that the library is the perfect place for you to refire.

The Village Thrift Shop is a non-profit organization that began in May of 2016.

All Board members and staff are volunteers. The By-laws of the organization state that after paying the direct costs of running the thrift shop, any profits will be used to fund grants to 501(c)(3) organizations that serve the Estes Valley.

Staff is excited to announce that they will accept grant applications beginning February 1, 2017, through 5:00 p.m. on March 31, 2017. Any 501(c)(3) organization that serves the Estes Valley is eligible to apply for monies that will assist with project/programs or purchasing items that will enhance the Estes Valley community.

Items that will not be funded include organizational start-up expenses, wages or stipends, something that benefits only

one individual, monies to retire an existing debt, mileage reimbursement, regular monthly business expenses, large capital projects (except for a very identifiable portion of that project,) any nationally recognized service organizations, or anything that would be an attempt to influence legislation or a political campaign.

A Grant Committee will review all applications and award monies ranging from a few hundred dollars to several thousand dollars. The grant awards will be announced the end of April.

Larimer County Department of Health and Environment has been awarded a grant by the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment (CDPHE) for implementation of Communities That Care (CTC) in Fort Collins and Estes Park.

What is CTC? CTC is an evidencebased process that uses

community collaboration to address the health concerns affecting youth. The five phase system is designed for sustainability and targets predictors of problems rather than waiting until problems occur.

How does CTC work? CTC communities identify prevention priorities through available data. This gives each community the flexibility to address their unique needs and implement proven strategies to address gaps in services and align community-wide programming.

Recycling Myths By: Judi Smith I all too often talk to individuals who believe in recycling but do not participate. They concur that the condition of our planetary home is dependent upon our (collective) daily habits. So – what stops their contribution?

Myth #1-“Recycling is expensive. ” Fact: Larimer County offers free residential recycling at the Transfer Station (680 Elm Road). On the other hand, taking landfill trash to the Transfer Station costs. My household prefers curbside service, which costs the same for recycling as for landfilling. The contents of the 33 gallon bags (green or clear) are limited to 40 pounds each. The heaviest material, of course, is glass – but that can be taken to the glass bins at the Event Center parking lot – for free. Additionally, the Planet Partners collect various recyclable materials free of charge – which, again, saves money otherwise spent on trash disposal.

Myth #2 – “Recycling is hard work.”

Our household has landfill trash and recycling bins in each living area. We simply toss the waste into whichever container is appropriate. We do rinse, but since we do not want to attract bears, all landfill garbage is kept inside until collection. Therefore, we rinse every container, landfill as well as recycling.

Myth #3 – “Recycling is too confusing.”

Admittedly, it can be difficult to learn the entire modern day disposal system at once. Instead, choose one recyclable item.

Our household started with aluminum cans (circa 1982). Once you are comfortable with your first item, expand to a second, and later a third. Remember, you do not need to do it all-every little bit helps.

Myth #4 – “It doesn’t really get recycled anyway. ” Let’s start close to home. Our

Planet Partners are local people collecting local recyclables, often for reuse as is. A list of these publicly supportive companies, who collect far more than is enumerated here, is available at the EV Library and at the EP Visitor Center. We know these items, such as shipping supplies and thrift shop donations get passed on to someone who will use them. We know plastic bags taken to Safeway and glass deposited in the Clear Intentions “glass only” bin are remanufactured to a brand new useful life. We know that recycled printer cartridges go on to service someone else’s printer. That’s the easy part.

A Materials Reclamation Facility accepts, sorts, cleans, and processes recyclable materials which they then sell to a manufacturer who creates the end product. Most MRFs are very open about the eventual transposition of the materials they process. I often mine the wealth of information (available on line) for these articles. www.ecocycle.org is an excellent place to start.

Myth #5 – “Well, how much difference can I make? ” Each business or household produces trash. If each such location follows sustainable practices when eliminating the waste, we can, at the very least, curtail the effects of careless disposal and begin to reclaim the earth, air and water of our planet. Here is a project where each and every individual can make a difference. As Margaret Mead said: “Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed, citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.”

Russell Nielsen Russell Erwin Nielsen, of Ft. Collins, Colorado passed peacefully on Saturday, January 21, 2017 at Seven Lakes Memory Care facility in Loveland. He was 90 years old.

Russell was a first-generation American, born in Dawson, Minnesota two parents who immigrated here from Norway and Denmark. He was a WWII US Naval Veteran having served on the USS Block Island in the South Pacific. A talented athlete, he played basketball for the Navy and also in college.

He graduated from Gustavis Adolphus College in St. Peter, MN with a degree in teaching and began his career there. After a two-year term as principal in Oregon, he transitioned permanently to Colorado where he became a physical education and science teacher at Drake Junior High in Arvada. He was also a football, basketball and track

coach while there. After taking early retirement in 1981 he remained active by working a number of part time jobs and was a member of the Moose Lodge, Aspen Club, VFW and American Legion of Ft. Collins.

He is proceeded in death by his parents, a brother, two sisters and his first wife Beverly.

He is survived by his second wife Elzora of Ft Collins, daughters Nancy Lanning of Northampton Pennsylvania, Diane Greene of Thornton, Karen Harmon of Loveland, Kristi Nielsen of Estes Park and Lana Ream of Loveland.

10 grand children and 19 great grandchildren.

Services and luncheon were held Thursday, January 26th at 11 a.m. at Pitchers Sports Bar in Ft. Collins. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Association.

William (Bill) Williams On Monday, January 23, 2017, William (Bill) Vincent Williams, of Estes Park, Colorado passed away at home after a long illness, surrounded by his loving family. Bill was born on June 15, 1930 and raised in Chicago, IL, the son of Anne (Weber) Williams and Vincent Albert Williams. After the death of his mother at the age of three, he and his brother spent much of their childhood during the Great Depression and Second World War living in Lawrence Hall, a home for boys from broken families in Chicago. He made lifetime friendships, and often shared many happy memories of his time there, telling stories of pranks and summer adventures at Camp Hardy, Wisconsin. After graduation from Lane Tech High School in Chicago, he earned an Associates Degree from Wright Jr. College, Chicago, IL. He joined the Naval Reserve in 1951, serving until his discharge in 1963. Bill attended Cornell College, in Mount Vernon, Iowa on an academic scholarship, and earned a bachelor’s degree in Economics in 1954. At Cornell, Bill swam on the swim team, was a trainer for the football team, and was a member of Beta Omicron Fraternity (known as the Owls). It was in his first semester at Cornell that he met the woman that he always referred to as the love of his life, Beryle (Bea) Wood. They married in Bea’s hometown of Nora Springs, IA on September 6, 1953. After graduation they moved to Colorado to start their new life together. He began working as an accountant for Standard Oil in Denver until beginning graduate school at the University of Colorado, Boulder, where he was awarded a Ph. D. in Economics in 1961. Bill and Bea began their family in Boulder, and moved to St. Paul, MN when he was offered a position on the faculty of the Department of Economics at Hamline University.

He rose to become the William Kahlert Chair of Economics, and remained on the faculty until retiring as Emeritus Professor in 1992. He was a highly respected scholar and teacher, with special areas of expertise in money and banking, microeconomics and macroeconomics, and econometrics. His academic honors included a Fulbright Scholarship to study in Cairo, Egypt in

1965, and a visiting professorship at the University of Peking (Beijing), China in 1983-1984. After 30 years of Minnesota winters (that included the hard work of maintaining their 100 year-old home), Bill and Bea were drawn back to the beautiful mountains of Colorado. Upon retirement, they moved to Estes Park, CO, where he helped his son Michael build the mountainside home where he lived out the remainder of his life. He spent many happy hours hiking with family and friends in Rocky Mountain National Park. Together with family, he also enjoyed travel throughout the United States, Canada, Mexico, Europe, Egypt, China, and Japan. He enjoyed hiking, boating, backpacking, camping, woodworking, and music. He loved languages, and explored family genealogy. He wrote a delightful memoir that helped capture his tremendous dry wit, humor, and exceptional insight.

He often drew on his Welsh background to explain his appreciation for efficiency and economy. Bill was preceded in death by his parents, his brother John Williams, sister Janice Williams, and half-sister Bonni Williams Keaveny. He leaves behind his beloved wife and soulmate Bea, who cared for him at home until his death.

His children Michael Williams (Sally Williams) from Phippsburg, CO, Donald Williams (Diane Golden) from Evergreen, CO, Blythe Williams (Richard Kay) from Durham, NC, and Jeffrey Williams (Lisa Conley) from Seattle, WA, loved him with all their hearts and held him in the highest regard as father and role model. His grandchildren Patrick Williams, Jessica Williams, Kirsten Williams, Adam Kay, Zhen Williams, and Sylvie Kay, truly loved and adored him. He will also be sadly missed by his special cousins Marcia Younger and Anita Bunch, his sisters-in-law Peggy Wynne and Ila Rooks, and many nieces, nephews, step-grandchildren, step-great-grandchildren, and special friends. Memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer's Association in care of Allnutt 1302 Graves Ave. Estes Park CO 80517. A memorial gathering will be planned for a later date.

Michele Gibson Estes Park resident, Michele Hackett Gibson, died at Medical Center of the Rockies in Loveland on January 14, 2017. She was 70 years old.

Michele (Shelley) Thayer Hackett was born December 29, 1946 in Fort Collins, CO. Her parents were Coyt Houston and Marjorie Merle (McMichael) Hackett. Marjorie was a clerk in the Rocky Mountain National Park administrative office, and Coyt was a seasonal ranger.

As a young child, Michele spent much of her time in Estes Park with her grandparents, Wayne and Rosamond (Crouch) Hackett. Wayne was the Rocky Mountain National Park Commissioner. Michele attended her first year of school in Estes Park. Her father’s Park Service career took the family to Gering, NE in 1952, St. Louis, MO in 1956, then to Yosemite National Park in 1959.

Michele graduated from Yosemite Elementary School in 1960 and went off to Rowland Hall-St. Mark’s in Salt Lake City for high school. She graduated with high honors in 1964 and entered Stanford University that fall. At Stanford, she met Richard Timbie, and they were married on March 24, 1968 in the Yosemite Chapel. In June, she graduated with a BA in Political Science and worked as an editor in California, Texas and Northern Virginia.

After the birth of her first child, Michele worked as a homemaker and volunteered extensively, participating in and later managing fundraising events for her children’s school in

Northern Virginia.

In 1997, after a divorce, Michele moved to Salt Lake City. She moved to Estes Park in 2000 where she worked for the Rocky Mountain Nature Conservancy and found solace and comradery through involvement in her church. In 2010, Michele’s high school sweetheart, Raymond Gibson, came back into her life; and on December 29, 2011, they were married at St. Bartholomew’s Episcopal Church in Estes Park. Michele and Ray had five wonderful years before her death.

Michele will be remembered by many family members for the loving care and support she provided, especially during difficult times. She is survived by Ray; daughter, Rachel Hiemstra, and husband, David, of Denver, CO; son, Nicholas Timbie, and wife, Wendy, of Dillon, CO; and by grandchildren, Riley Hiemstra, Isabel Hiemstra, and Jordan Timbie. She is also survived by her brother, David Hackett, and his wife, Theresa, of Centennial, WY, and sister, Marci Mitchell, and her husband, Peter, of Mt. Pleasant, SC. A requiem mass will be held on Saturday, January 28, 2017 at 1:00 p.m. at St. Bartholomew’s Episcopal Church in Estes Park, Colorado. A memorial and Interment service will be held at a future date and will be announced.

Charles Yohe Beloved husband, father, and grandfather, Charlie Yohe passed into his heavenly home on January 21, surrounded by his loved ones.

Born April 17, 1929 in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, to Ray Peoples Yohe and Lelia (Wright) Yohe.

Graduated from high school in Pasadena, Texas.

He attended college in Texas, pursuing music studies until interrupted by the Korean War, in which he served in the U.S. Navy onboard the USS Essex, playing in the Navy Band.

In October 1955, he married his 9th grade sweetheart, Betty Anderson, and they chose to start their life together in the West. Charlie worked as a Customer Service Agent for United Airlines for 35 years in Cleveland, Las Vegas, San Diego, and Albuquerque.

He and Betty retired to Estes Park in 1992, and were lucky enough to enjoy Rocky Mountain National Park as their backyard for 22 years, with all the out-

door activities the Park affords. Charlie sa ng in the Estes Park Chorale, the Oratorio, and the Mountain Men, and volunteered in the Arts community and for the Forest Service. He and Betty were charter members of Shepherd of the Mountains Lutheran Church, and Charlie was active in the music program there.

Surviving are wife Betty, daughter Lyne Yohe, daughter Lisa (Yohe) Ellison and her husband Keith Ellison, and grandson Patrick Hart and his wife Victoria Hart. A service in celebration of his life will be held on February 18 at 2 p.m. at Shepherd of the Mountains Lutheran Church, located at 2000 Ptarmigan Trail, Estes Park. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Shepherd of the Mountains church.
