LWV Hosts Estes Valley Organizations For “Hot Topics On A Chilly Night�

The League of Women Voters is hosting a program about key organizations in the Estes Valley on Wednesday, January 24, 6 – 8 p.m., in the Board Room at Town Hall. The featured organizations this year are the Estes Area Lodging Association, Estes Park Economic Development Corporation, Estes Valley Partners for Commerce, Estes Arts District, and Restorative Justice. Chuck Scott, EALA Board Member, Jon Nicholas, President of Estes Park EDC, Charley Dickey, President of EVPC, Nick Smith, Interim President of Estes Arts District and Melissa Westover, Executive Director of Restorative Justice, will be speaking on behalf of their organizations. Each speaker will explain the mission of their organization, how it benefits the community, its current focus as well as recent accomplishments, and how the community can keep informed and be involved in the organization’s work. The audience will also have an opportunity to ask questions. Everyone is welcome at League events, so we hope to see you there!

The New Estes Park Wine And Chocolate Festival Debuts February 10 Tickets on sale now; sponsorships and advertising still available The inaugural Estes Park Wine and Chocolate Festival will take place just before Valentine's Day, Saturday, Feb. 10 from 1 to 5 p.m. at the Estes Park Events Complex, 1125 Rooftop Way. The event is coordinated by the Town of Estes Park's Events Division and presented by Latitude 105. It will provide guests with an opportunity to sample and/or purchase wine and chocolate from vendors such as Snowy Peaks Winery, Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory, Vino Salida Winery and House of Stewart Confections. Gift and other vendors, including Mouco Cheese Company and the Cheeky Flamingo, will also be selling products at the festival.

This new event is designed to bring guests to Estes Park during the winter months. A free shuttle service will be offered to and from the Events Complex the day of the event, with stops at lodges, downtown and the Estes Park Visitor Center. Brodie Avenue Improvements Open House Scheduled January 25 The Town of Estes Park invites the public to hear information and comment on the preliminary design for Brodie Avenue improvements at an open house Thursday, Jan. 25. The project will consist of asphalt repair, a trail/sidewalk alignment connecting Fish Creek Rd, & Community Dr., and drainage improvements along the entire length of Brodie Avenue, providing a safe connection for pedestrians and stormwater improvements for the entire area. Concept drawings will be available for review and comment Jan. 25 from 4 p.m. until 6 p.m. at the Estes Park High School, 1600 Manford Ave., in the Commons area. A project overview will be given at 4:30 p.m.

Public Works Pavement Manager Kelly Stallworth is looking forward to participating in this project to help the community surrounding the school and providing a safe area for pedestrians. The Town of Estes Park encourages everyone to provide input on the preliminary plan and design. Construction for this project

is slated for June and July of 2018 while school is out of session.

Deed Restriction May Prohibit Child Care As Potential Use For Soon-To-Be Vacated Senior Center As Senior Services transitions to the new Estes Valley Community Center in February, the Town Board will review various community proposals for the use of the Town's soon-to-be vacated Senior Center building at 220 Fourth St. At its Jan. 9 meeting, the Town Attorney informed the board of his opinion that the building cannot be used as a child care facility, one of a few potential proposals, due to a deed restriction on the property.

Stanley Park, the location of the Events Complex, Museum and Senior Center was donated to the Town by F.O. Stanley with a deed restriction prohibiting the Town from transferring ownership of the property and restricting its use to "Public Recreation and Entertainment" purposes. Any violation of the deed restriction, including any use that does not meet these guidelines, triggers a reversal of ownership of the entire property to the heirs of F.O. Stanley. It is the legal opinion of the Town Attorney that child care does not fulfill the guidelines in the deed restriction, and placing a child care

operation in the building would pose a significant risk of the Town losing ownership of the entire site. The Town Board must consider this advice as it hears proposals for use of the facility.

The Town Board will hear proposals building at its Jan. 23 study session, and the topic is tentatively scheduled for consideration at its Feb. 13 regular meeting. Final meeting details are posted to www.estes.org/boardsandmeetings as they become available.

Town Administrator Frank Lancaster expressed disappointment that the deed restriction may affect proposals for use of the facility. He commented, "The Town considers the lack of child care, particularly for children less than two years of age, an extremely serious issue in the community and will continue to cooperate to find reasonable solutions to the problem." The child care issue is a focus area identified in the Town Board's 2018 Strategic Plan (www.estes.org/strategicplan).

January 13 At 10:00 p.m. the EVFPD was paged to 333 W. Wonderview Ave. to assist the Estes Park Ambulance.

The charge(s) are merely an accusation and the defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.

On December 26 at 10:51 p.m. police charged a 28 year old male with impersonating a peace officer at Scott Avenue and S. St. Vrain Ave. The victim was 69 years old. The male was transported to Larimer County Detention Center.

On December 30 at 10:50 p.m. police were called to an argument at 345 Kiowa Drive. On December 31, a warrant was obtained and police arrested a 30 year old male from Estes Park and charged him with DUI, false imprisonment, domestic violence, felony menacing and harassment. The victim was 37 years old. The male was transported to

Larimer County Detention Center.

On January 7 at 8:42 p.m. police contacted a 48 year old male driver from Fort Collins who was found to have been in a motor vehicle accident in the 2600 block of Mary’s Lake Road. The driver was charged with DUI, careless driving and failure to report an accident and later transported to Larimer County Detention Center.

On January 13 at 10:08 a.m. police were called to a disturbance at 1120 Big Thompson Ave. Upon arrival police charged a 27 year old male from Estes Park with third degree assault and domestic violence against a 23 year old victim. The male was transported to Larimer County Detention Center.

US 34 Reconstruction Hits Milestone amount of road and river work still needs to be done – including the sections of the highway west of the landslide area and near Drake.

On Monday, Jan. 22, the closure limit on the Estes Park end of the canyon will move further west to mile point 68, or Noel’s Draw Lane. The new closure limit will allow crews to install protection below the roadway, similar to work that is being done inside the landslide area.

The closure will continue up to the Memorial Day weekend. This summer, asphalt paving and milling operations will continue throughout the canyon, requiring lane closures and intermittent traffic impacts. Project completion is scheduled for December 2018.

PROJECT BACKGROUND: US 34 Big Thompson Canyon’s roads and bridges were heavily damaged during the 2013 floods with many homes damaged and over 100 air lifted evacuations. The canyon and its residents also suffered from flooding in 1976. As a result of these two events, CDOT studied the hydraulic flow of the river in the canyon and its impact on the road and bridges along its path while looking for safety improvements and resiliency solutions to prevent/protect against future flood events.

Reopening of 3-mile section first of two major achievements The US 34 closure between Estes Park and Loveland is now three miles shorter, with the section of the highway between mile points 80 and 83 on the east end of the canyon now open to two-way travel for everyone.

Inside this tight area known as the narrows, crews completed 14,000 cubic yards of soil-cement mixing. In this process, crews combined natural material with cement to create man-made bedrock beneath a 15-foot wide section of the driving surface. This mixture will make the roadway through the narrows more resilient by ensuring that the river cannot erode the pavement from below. Crews also installed new drainage in this area. The minor work that remains to be done in this section of the canyon can be done under the condition of single lane closures.

“Each time we meet a promised milestone, we become one step closer to meeting our commitment to the canyon residents and local communities to have the canyon opened prior to this coming Memorial day. Reopening the narrows is a testament to our team’s hard work and dedication to making that happen, ” said James Usher, CDOT project director.

In the next few weeks, the project team plans to open the roadway near the landslide (mile point 71) for travel by permit holders. This section of the highway has been completely closed since October, with even permitted residents prohibited from driving through this area while crews install several layers of grouted boulders under the road to protect from flooding. Allowing resident traffic in this area will provide more direct access to Estes Park.

Despite these gains, project officials are quick to point out that a significant

Comedy Works describes Sam Adams in three words: "Smooth. Clever. Hilarious." In 2001, Sam stepped on stage to perform stand-up comedy for the first time, at age 41. Eight years later he turned to a career in comedy full-time after winning at the Great American Comedy Festival and gaining national attention.

Sam's energetic, comicallyinsightful act is 100 percent profanity-free and filled with observations about his every-day encounters. He is a headline performer at comedy clubs and corporate events across the country.

In an emergency, which is usually when you need the flashers, the last thing you need to be doing is searching the dash, trying to locate that button marked with a little red triangle.

When the time comes, say to pull over to take a phone call, (right?) you need those flashers. Where is that darn red triangle button? If it were in the same place in every car, we’d have one less thing to worry about in an emergency. (I spend those middle-of-the-night waking hours fretting about the location of my emergency flashers button on my dashboard, don’t you?)

Another example: every eight-inch pie plate should have a diameter of eight inches, but such is not the case. Line up a row of eight-inch pie plates—stiff tin, flexible aluminum, glass—and you’ll have a variety of sizes. No big deal, some might think. But an eight-inch pie plate that isn’t truly eight inches will not hold the entire pie filling. Then the pie plate runneth over and you have a mess.

Same goes for the 9x9 brownie pan. And the 9x13 sheet cake pan, while we’re at it.

They are not all created equal.

But here’s the one that is currently causing me sleepless nights: blanket size.

To begin, let’s talk about mattresses: First there’s the twin—which is not the same as a double even though the name would indicate such. A twin is a single—go figure—and a double is a full. But if a double is a full, then a twin should be an empty, which, come to think of it, is usually the case. Many people feel like they’ll fall out of a twin so they choose something bigger.

I actually slumber soundly in that size bed.

Next we have the queen, which is said to have been “invented” by Queen Elizabeth I in the late 1500s. QE never married and was afraid of the dark so her bed size grew to accommodate a night companion with whom she gossiped, shared her dreams, and sought counsel. Right.

Larger still is the king, which is more like an acreage than a bed. (In the 1890s the king bed was much larger than today’s, fitting 15 people. You can see the original king bed in the Victoria and Albert Mu-

And we will only mention the California King because it’s there, in all its American pretentiousness.

For each of these beds there are blankets.

Cotton, fiber, wool, seamed edges or silk trimmed. We all have our preferences.

I like my blanket tucked in at the bottom of the bed; some people think that constricts their feet. Some like to have their blanket nested right under their chin; their counterparts prefer their blanket long enough to draw up over their head, or the warm-blooded want theirs to come no higher than about shoulder level.

However a blanket is laid out on a bed, it needs to fit its intended mattress size. And if the blanket makers of the world can’t make them the same, the best they could do is make them too big. If I have to tuck in a little extra at the bottom or have more than I need up around my ears, I’m ok with that. But I’ve slept under blankets that are so small they don’t cover my posterior when I turn to lie on my side. (This occurs most often at my parents’ house where they make up their spare beds with blankets they got as wedding gifts 62 years ago. It’s nice that those blankets have lasted that long and are still in good shape, but they’ve shrunk! Time to buy some new blankets, you say. Try telling that to my parents.

They’d reply that these have another 62 good years in ‘em.)

Even worse is the battle of the blanket: when you share a bed and you have to grab onto whatever portion of blanket you can when your partner changes position or you’ll end up with no blanket at all. This wouldn’t happen if blankets were made too big rather than without an inch to spare.

I went online to find out what standard blanket sizes are. There was a discrepancy of up to 18 inches for a full-sized blanket.

Eighteen inches! That’s the difference between a cozy night’s sleep and a cold, bare backside.

There oughta be a law.

EVRPD To Provide Dedicated Space For Seniors At The Estes Valley Community Center Estes Valley Recreation and Park District (EVRPD), provider of numerous recreational and community activities in Estes Valley, is excited to provide dedicated space in the Estes Valley Community Center (EVCC) for the Estes Park senior community.

Having this dedicated space will offer seniors a place to enjoy hot coffee, socialize with friends in a quiet area, play games, complete puzzles, create art and crafts, take a leisurely walk on the indoor track with stunning views—all at no cost.

In addition to the free amenities, there will be many educational and cultural programs available for free. Seniors can also enjoy a nutritious, hot lunch once a week for a fee of $5 per person thanks to a three-month pilot program provided through a grant from SupplyWorks.

“Our goal is to keep the Estes Park senior community up to date about the latest information, exciting new program schedules, construction progress and services offered at the community center,” said JoAnn Batey, Vice President of the EVRPD Senior Advisory Committee. “In addition, we want your feedback about what you would like offered at the new facility.”

To keep the senior community abreast of updates at the community center, they have established an email list to periodically send out information. Our 4th Annual Pumpkins and Pilsners fundraising event was a great success and it is time to take the money raised and distribute it amongst projects that seek to enhance and improve educational and recreational opportunities for families in Estes Park. Potential projects must be supported by organizations or non-profits that reside in or that directly serve the Estes Park community.

The deadline for proposal submissions is Wednesday, February 28th.

1917 Book Club To Take Place February 21 On Wednesday, February 21, 2018, the 1917 Book Club returns to the Estes Park Museum to explore local title, Bob Flame: Rocky Mountain Ranger

This program is free and registration is required, limited to 50 participants. It is strongly encouraged that participants read each book prior to the program to take part in the discussion.

The February selection is Bob Flame: Rocky Mountain Ranger by Dorr G. Yeager. “This classic novel written for a youthful audience by Dorr G. Yeager, Rocky Mountain National Park’s first chief naturalist, was released in 1935. Bob Flame: Rocky Mountain Ranger helped define the image of the modern national park ranger.”

The author’s daughter, Patricia Yeager Washburn, will be in attendance to answer questions and contribute to a lively discussion facilitated by Museum staff.

Estes Park Repertoire Theatre Company To Present Comedy Skits The Estes Park Repertoire Theatre Company is currently rehearsing for its second production of the season.

“Comedies for Readers Theatre” is an evening of short comedy sketches about relationships, prescription drug side effects, aging, television and much more, presented in readers theatre format. In readers theatre the actors use their voices and expressions to convey the story without a set, movement or props.

Cast members, each of whom will play a number of characters, include Sallie Brackman, Bruce Brackman, Michael Dzik, LoAnne Forschmiedt, Rik Forschmiedt, Christann Higley, CJ Jensen, Joan Parlette, Elizabeth Potter

and Cassie Weber.

These comedies will be presented at the American Legion Post 119, 850 North St. Vrain, on January 26-28 and February 2-4. The Friday and Saturday performances will start at 7:00 p.m., and the Sunday performances at 2:00 p.m.

The group then headed back into the brewery where Matt shared a bit of history about Rock Cut. Matt and Tracy have been friends for 20 years and have been homebrewing together in Tracy’s

Fermentation time takes about three weeks before the beer is ready and most beer is served right in the Rock Cut taproom. The group then moved back into the taproom where Kirby Hazelton shared information about the various community events where Rock Cut has put its focus.

From a beer yoga class (called “Stretches and Suds”), to weekly Tuesday Trivia and board game nights on Wednesdays, to the Rock Cut Gives Back program and the ‘Beer It Forward’ board, Rock Cut focuses on being a gathering space for locals and guests alike, especially after they enjoy an adventure out in the mountains. Mike Johnston, Candidate For Governor In Estes Park

Mike Johnston, Colorado Democratic Gubernatorial Candidate for the 2018 election, will be in Estes Park on Sunday, January 21, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. to meet with voters and answer questions about his run for Governor. This event will be held at Elkins Distilling Co., 1825 North Lake Avenue, Estes Park. It is free and open to the public.

Mike was born and raised in Colorado, and has a significant background in the education field. During high school and college, Mike was involved in community service activities, including volunteering at a homeless shelter and mentoring youth in a housing project.

He has a Master’s in Education Policy

degree from Harvard and a law degree from Yale Law School. Besides teaching experience in the public education system as well as teaching education law at the University of Denver Law School, Mike has been an education policy advisor to politicians, including President Obama.

In 2009, Mike began his formal political career by serving in the Colorado State Senate. After eight years in the Colorado State Senate, Mike was term limited, and in January 2017 announced his intention to run for Colorado Governor.

During his terms in the Colorado State Senate, Mike sponsored various progressive legislation, including in-state tuition benefits for children of military families, “Jump Start” to assist with economic development in Colorado’s struggling rural communities, full-day kindergarten with additional literacy support programs, community policing programs, tax credits for alternative fuel vehicles, civil unions legislation and protections, and professional development for teachers and school leaders, among others.

Mike is the first gubernatorial candidate to announce a plan for 100% renewable energy by 2040, and has proposed a plan called “Colorado Promise” that supports two years of debt-free education or skills training in return for service to the state such as trail repair, or fire mitigation and flood prevention work.

State Senate And House Candidates Coming To Estes Park January 28 Rebecca Cranston and Ralph Trenary, Candidates for Colorado State Senate District 15, and Conor Duffy, Candidate for Colorado State House District 49, will be in Estes Park on Sunday, January 28, from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. This event is free and open to the public, and will be held in Room 202 of the Estes Park Town Hall.

These candidates are campaigning for seats in the Colorado legislature that will be representing Estes Park and Valley in the November 2018 election. This event provides an excellent opportunity for you to meet these Democratic candidates in person prior to the Caucus on March 6, and the Democratic primary election in June.

This event will provide time for each candidate to present their views on important local and Colorado issues. They will also be available to answer your questions and speak with you individually.

GREAT LOVE: A BEAUTIFUL WAY TO START A ‘GREAT’ YEAR As we begin 2018 one thing to ‘inventory’ is the level of our love for others. In the Bible we are reminded that, of all the really important things, like faith, hope, and love, ‘the greatest of these is love. Jesus exemplified this ‘great’ quality, “Greater love has no man than this, to lay down his life for his friends.” But, besides His example, it certainly helps to see love in action in ordinary people, like us. I love the following example: A surgeon tells the story of a patient following surgery. “I stand by the bed where a young woman lies, her face postoperative, her mouth twisted in palsy, clownish. A tiny twig of the facial nerve, the one to the muscles of her mouth, have been severed. She will be thus from now on. The surgeon had followed with religious fervor the curve of her flesh: I promise you that. Nevertheless, to remove the tumor from her cheek, I had to cut the little nerve. Her young husband is in the room. He stands on the opposite side of the bed, and together they seem to dwell in the evening lamplight, isolated from me, private. ‘Who are they?’ I ask myself, he and this wry mouth that I have made, who gaze at and touch each other so generously, so greedily? The young woman speaks: ‘Will my mouth always be like this?’ she asks. ‘Yes’, I say, ‘Because the nerve is cut.’ She nods and is silent. But the young man smiles. ‘I like it!’ he says, ‘It’s kind of cute.’ All at once I know who he is. I understand and lower my gaze. One is not bold in an encounter with one so ‘god-like’. Unmindful he bends to kiss her crooked mouth, and I am so close I can see how he twists his own lips to accommodate to hers, to show her that their kiss still works. I remember that the gods appeared in ancient Greece as mortals, and I hold my breath and let the wonder in.” (Dr. Richard Selzer, Lessons from the Art of Surgery) Perhaps you have been privileged to see such a display of love from a person to their mate, or to others. However, it always makes us want to ‘hold our breath and let the wonder in’. It was that way with Christ’s Church in the first century. “Behold, how they love one another” is reported to have been said as people saw and desired to integrate into such a body of people. It is no surprise.

Jesus had said, “By this will all men know that you are my disciples, that you love one another.” (John 13:35) This being true, one wonders how many people actually fulfill this qualification for discipleship.

Perhaps it’s a good time to take inventory of our lives to see how we are doing.

First Corinthians 13:1-13 gives us a good picture of what Christian (God-like) love is really about. Consider the items in the description and see how you do: _____ I am patient with you…because I love you and want to forgive. _____ I am kind to you…because I love you and want to help. _____ I do not envy your possessions or gifts…I love you and want you to have the best. _____ I do not boast about my attainments…I love you and want to hear about yours. _____ I am not proud…because I love you and want to esteem you. _____ I am not rude…because I love you and care about your feelings. _____ I am not self-seeking…because I love you and want your needs met instead. _____ I am not easily angered…because I love you and want to overlook your faults. _____ I do not keep a record of your wrongs…My love for you covers a multitude of sins.

“Love knows no limit to its endurance, no end to its trust, no fading of its hope; it can outlast anything. It is the one thing that still stands when all else has fallen. In this life there are three lasting qualities—faith, hope, and love, but the greatest is love.”

Two thousand people enjoyed the fun last weekend at Estes Park’s very own, Winter Festival which was held at the Estes Park Events Center.

The weekend consisted of a chili cookoff, beer tastings and an IPA contest, fun live music, kids activities, vendor booths and lots of fun.

Rocky Mountain SereniTea and Raven's Roast Coffee are teaming up to bring classes on the benefits of herbs and alternative therapies to Estes Park. Sandra Hofmann, owner of Rocky Mountain SereniTea and Shannon McGlothlen, owner of Raven's Roast Coffee, feel strongly about health and healing and hope to provide information about natural healing to all of those who are interested. Modern, western medicine has its place, but Shannon and Sandra feel that many illnesses and ailments can be healed or prevented naturally using herbs and other alternative and non-invasive methods.

These two Estes Park women entrepreneurs wish to extend this knowledge to the community.

The first class, which will be held at Raven's Roast Coffee Shop located in the Old Church Shops in downtown Estes Park on Thursday, January 25 at 5:30 p.m. will cover the topic of healing colds and flus with herbs. Michael Meyer, doctor and master herbalist, will speak on this topic.

A demonstration on how to make an elderberry syrup is also planned for this class. Donations are greatly appreciated to help toward the use of products used in the class.

Winter Soccer Festival The EPHS Men's Soccer Team would like to invite anyone that loves the game to attend a youth winter soccer festival on Saturday, February 3, 2018 from 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. The day will deliver professional clinicians to encourage exploration of the technical and tactical fun of the game indoors.

There will be challenging games mixed with encouraging development for every age from eight years to MS youth. Register by January 20 for a discounted price of just $40. With two clinicians plus local coaches this is an amazing training opportunity for a minimal cost. Because we are indoors at the elementary school we will need to limit space so get a spot reserved!

Soccer is that sport that everyone plays for life. All you need is a ball and a place to play - even if that is just a wall to hit the ball against. It opens the door to every level of player to play with anyone who loves the game.

Coach Marshall of the EPHS men's team says ' I remember going on a vacation with my daughter (who is now a UPSL player in Boulder) when she was 16. Of course she is walking around with her soccer ball and this lil boy who spoke no English points to

the ball in her hands... she sets it down and they start playing along the docks by the ocean. The game gets going and before you know it there is a crowd and thats what soccer is all about.

Estes Park has a melting pot of soccer athletes from all over the world. They show up in the park to play the game which helps our athletes to develop unique skills. But we want to create even more opportunity for those wanting to play with ways to develop their skills further with strong camps and trainings offered in Estes Park.

This festival will raise funds to offer training for EPHS teams as well on February 2, 2018. We hope you will join us for a fun day of soccer (pick which day fits for your age). If you are in HS we welcome both boys & girls and we don't even care if you play on a team or if you live in Estes! The HS training is only $20 and that is a steal for the clinicians who will offer this!

EPMS Science Festival Coming Friday, January 26 By: Olyvia Meinking, 7th Grade EPMS Student

Do you want to see so many scientists in one room that you won’t be able to count all of them? If so, then come on down to the 10th Annual Science Festival at the Estes Park Event Center on January 26th. It starts at 5:00 p.m. and there will be an award presentation for all the students at 6:30 p.m. This event is hosted by the Middle School Science Department.

The Science Festival includes students working in pairs or as an individual from grade 6-8 on a project of their choosing that has to do with science.

Students have done some demonstrations and some have been using the Scientific Method some have also done both. The Science Festival is meant to

showcase students’ work and achievements. All of their posters, demonstrations, and videos will be on display and you can ask the students questions about their projects.

This event also serves a fundraiser for the science department. There is the silent auction which will have items such as ski passes, trail rides, overnight stays, and gift certificates to local restaurants and businesses.

There will also be a chili dinner from El Mex-Kal available for $4.00. All money made goes directly back into the science supplies budget, meaning it will go to buying more supplies and materials to help serve our students and continue providing them hands-on learning experiences.

A Know Before You Go Presentation by the Colorado Avalanche Information Center Avalanches kill an average of 42 people each year in North America, with hundreds more injured. Avalanches don't just happen to extreme athletes - they can happen to those skiing, snowboarding, snowmobiling, hiking, driving, hunting, bike riding, and more - anyone who can get onto or underneath steep snow-covered slopes.

Many avalanche victims don’t know they are in avalanche danger and are unprepared to deal with an avalanche. This doesn't have to happen – the danger signs are usually obvious to those who know what to look for. All those living, working, and recreating in snowy mountains need to learn about avalanches.

What they learn can save their lives.

Know Before You Go (KBYG) is a free avalanche awareness program. Not much science, no warnings to stay out of the mountains and no formulas to mem-

orize. In about an hour, you will see the destructive power of avalanches, understand when and why they happen, and how you can have fun in the mountains and avoid avalanches. Join the Estes Park Mountain Shop and the Colorado Avalanche Information Center (CAIC) on Saturday, January 20 starting at 6 pm, and get some free education on how to get out and have fun in our winter wonderland safely. Food for Life: The Power of Food for Diabetes Nutrition and Cooking Class teaches participants how food choices can prevent and treat type 2 diabetes and arms them with practical cooking skills for making healthy and delicious meals.

People who have type 2 diabetes, or concerns about developing diabetes, and their friends and family members will benefit from the class. “Research shows type 2 diabetes can be controlled and even reversed with a healthy plant-based diet, � says Susan Levin, M.S., R.D., the director of nutrition education for PCRM. “A vegan diet can help people with diabetes control blood sugar more effectively than the standard diabetes dietary regimen. �

The class, designed by physicians, diabetes educators, registered dietitians,

and professional chefs, offers an easyto-follow dietary approach based on scientific research. Population studies and clinical research show that a lowfat, plant-based diet is effective at improving blood glucose levels, promoting weight loss, reducing cholesterol, and lowering the risk of diabetes and other chronic diseases.

Community Raises Record Amount For Salvation Army The 2017 Salvation Army Red Kettle Campaign received more donations than any other time in history. Our community raised over $60,000 for the Estes Park Service Extension Unit of the Salvation Army. On behalf of the Salvation Army board, sincere appreciation goes to all of you compassionate donors and dedicated bell ringers! It is not easy to stand outside in frigid, windy weather ringing a tiny bell. It’s also challenging to drop hard-earned cash into a kettle when there are so many expenses during the holidays. Yet, you did it. You gave, knowing that your generosity would help residents in a state of emergency.

While the Salvation Army did not meet its goal of $67,300, the organization is still receiving donations. Due to the high cost of rent and the great need for food, the Salvation Army had a lofty goal.

Being Money Wise: A Worthy Goal For 2018 We’re just under three weeks into the new year, and it’s clear that the Estes valley has some exciting aspirations for 2018. The evidence: all those books that have been checked out from our popular New Year’s Resolutions display table.

Whether your goal is to exercise more or to write that novel, reading is one of the happiest ways to stay inspired.

And if your aim is to have a better grasp on personal finance in 2018, the Library is an excellent destination. Over eight consecutive years, a well-charted path to successful money management has been developed right at our hometown library—so successful it’s been adopted by many libraries across Colorado. In 2018, we “Resolvers” have the opportunity to learn these principles right from the convenience of home.

Look for the“Common Cents for Colorado” link at estesvalleylibrary.org. All materials from the core five-part workshop series are contained in this convenient one-stop site. You can start with Lesson One: “Goal Setting and Financial Planning”.

In addition to class handouts, complete with a sample budget, you can watch my favorite resource: informative and entertaining YouTube video skits starring me and Financial Programs Consultant Marsha Yelick. I go from being a guy fresh out of college in Episode One to a new retiree forty years later in Episode Five. Meanwhile, Marsha doesn’t age one bit: quite amazing.

These resources are especially important in 2018 as we shift from classroomstyle financial literacy workshops and individual counseling toward online learning you can do anytime, anywhere.

This transition is based on vital feed-

back from the 2017 Patron Satisfaction Survey. You ranked financial literacy high in your level of satisfaction, though not highest in level of importance. This tells us that after eight solid years of workshops and financial counseling, a need has successfully been met, at least for now.

With the website resources now strong—along with a fine collection of money management books—both on our shelves and in our digital collection, we’ll take a breather, now that the eightyear grant project has concluded.

Buoyed by three back-to-back national grants from the FINRA Investor Education Foundation, the journey has been remarkable, thanks to the guidance throughout from Marsha Yelick, who brought the perfect blending of a gifted educator and the industry training of a Chartered Financial Analyst. The FINRA modules that Marsha first adapted in 2010 went statewide in 2015.

Counting local and statewide participation, over 10,000 participants have benefitted from this training.

We’ve gathered many inspiring stories of people whose lives have been changed by the simple step of starting a household budget and understanding their investment options—from teens opening their first college saving accounts to seniors setting their financial affairs in order for their heirs. James Wilson “Teeny” Burks James Wilson “Teeny” Burks went to be with our Lord on January 9, 2018. He waged a warrior’s battle against cancer.

Jim was born on February 4, 1936 in Horse Cave, Kentucky on Glenwood Farm. In 1980, Jim was reunited with his college sweetheart and love of his life, Anne. Their union created a family of seven children which led to fourteen grandchildren, eleven great grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Jim served 42 years as an educator and school administrator in California, Colorado, and Kentucky. He was proud of his innovative and progressive style which garnered him recognition from every state. Among his accomplishments, he created the South Bay Bird Sanctuary in San Diego county, served on many boards and commissions, helped create the Aspen Camp for Deaf Children, testified before the U. S. congressional committee on special education, and was honored as a Kentucky Colonel by legislative act.

After his retirement, he enjoyed traveling with Anne, spending time with family, woodworking, and tending to the birds and wildlife in his yard. His love of feeding the birds has been passed through the generations.

Throughout his time and wherever he was, Jim kept a special relationship with the community and church. The bond with his childhood friends was unbreakable and remained to the end. He stayed close with the alumni and basketball teams from his high school (Caverna HS, Horse Cave, KY) and college (MTSU, Murfreesboro, TN) and many people throughout his career. He served as a deacon to his churches in Colorado, Kentucky, and Tennessee and continued to be involved in education after retirement. All along, his quiet presence

Frances Mary Steige Estes Park resident, Frances Mary Steige, born in Butler, Pennsylvania July 18, 1911, passed away on Monday January 8, 2018. She moved to Estes Park from Loveland after her husband Walter died, in September 2005, and resided at the Good Samaritan Village.

Frances is survived by her son, Walter, Jr. and his wife Paula, granddaughters Jannese and Jeryll of Anchorage, AK, step granddaughters Stacia Valley and stepson Stephen Laing as well as sister-in-law Alice Quinlisk. Additionally, there are six great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. She was married in Punxsutawney, PA on June 29, 1934.

She and her husband lived in Pennsylvania and Jackson, Michigan during

World War ll and moved to Trinidad, CO in September, 1947 from State College, PA. Frances worked as a stenographer and retired as a bank teller from the First National Bank in Trinidad. After retirement, she and her husband enjoyed RV travel, fishing and their cabin in Creede, Colorado.

She loved various crafts, playing cards and especially baking, which was appreciated by family and her friends at Good Samaritan. Jacquelyn Jean Larsen Buckert was born in 1931 to Marjorie and Rhule R. Larsen in Powell, Wyoming. She attended schools in Belle Fourche, South Dakota, and Shoshoni, Wyoming. She attended the Univ. of Wyoming, Univ. of Idaho and Univ. of Denver where she received her RN Degree. She later attended Park College in Kansas City receiving her Masters degree in Social Psychology. She began her career as an RN at the Univ. of Idaho, Seripps in La Jolla, CA and for an OBGYN and Pediatrician in Moscow, Idaho. Upon moving to Independence, MO she was a nursing supervisor at the Independence Sanitarium and Hospital for 27 years. Upon her retirement, in 1995 the family moved to Estes Park, where she continued her career as an RN working at the Estes Park Medical Center for 4 ½ years. Following this they purchased the Brass Junction that was located in the Church Shops and operated this for six years. Jacquie married the love of her life, Kennith C. Buckert in 1952 in Sandpoint, ID and had 4 children together. While Ken served four years in the Navy during the Korean War, they were separated.

Jacquie was active in many civic organizations such as Jaycee Wives, member of Delta Delta Delta Sorority, helped organize the Independence, MO Welcome Wagon, was active in the University Wives, was a Sunday School teacher, Acolyte Leader, Cub Scout Den Mother

and Girl Scout leader, sang in various church choirs including the Community Church of the Rockies, a member of the Estes Park Chorale, was a Deacon in several Presbyterian Churches, participated in the Estes Park Rodeo Committee, Friday Nighters Dance Club and Quota Club in Estes Park, was a volunteer in Rocky Mountain National Park and for the Ambassadors for the city volunteering at the Visitors’s Center.

She enjoyed many different hobbies that included writing, gardening, hiking, crocheting, reading, but her main hobby was interacting with her family and hosting family gatherings. Survivors include her husband, Kennith Buckert, sons Kevin Buckert (Linda), Kelly Buckert (Deb), daughters Kristy Anderson (Pat), Kenna Pittman; grandchildren Quetonia Finch (Chris), Colleen Buckert, Sean Anderson (Kim), Stacy Peterson (Zac), Erica Jensen (Derek), Jaiden Buckert; and eight great grandchildren.

A Celebration of Life will be held on January 28th at 3:00 p.m. at the Presbyterian Community Church of the Rockies, Estes Park. As we celebrate Jacquie’s life, she was not a fan of black and would love it if you wore something red. Georgia Lee Duell July 25, 1930 – January 9, 2018 Georgia Lee Lockard Duell (87), a 53-year resident of Estes Park, passed away on January 9, 2018, with her family at her side.

Georgia was born July 25, 1930, in Shelby, Nebraska, to Dora Margaret Coker Lockard and George Dewey Lockard.

Georgia graduated from Silver Creek High School and attended Peru State College in Peru, Nebraska and Colorado State Teachers College in Greeley, Colorado. She taught school for a short time before marrying Lloyd Edwin Duell, of Greeley, Colorado. They were wed on June 1, 1952, in Silver Creek, Nebraska.

After their wedding, Georgia joined her husband, Lloyd, farming at La Salle, Eaton and Hereford. In 1965 they moved to Estes Park, a place they both loved to visit and vacation. Georgia used her sewing skills as a seamstress working at Bandbox Cleaners and Lake Estes Dry Cleaners. Georgia also worked for many years at Herzog’s Gift Corral and Seybold’s Gift Store, while sewing for friends and family at home.

Georgia enjoyed bowling with Lloyd in a mixed bowling league and her friends in a women’s league. She loved watching her children play sports as well as watching the Colorado Rockies, Denver Nuggets and Denver Broncos.

She was an avid reader of books and

there was always a puzzle out for her to work on in her spare time.

Georgia is preceded in death by her husband Lloyd, and her son, Craig. She is survived by her children; Marilyn and her three children December, Jared, Haley and her husband Ryan with two children, Lorelei and Lincoln; Jim and his wife Lisa; Carol and her husband Marc with two children, Aaron and Allison; Dale and his wife Shaleen with children, Alexandra, Trevyn, and Drew Miller and his child Abiageal; Shauna Edwards Duell and her two children, Jordan and Taylor and his wife Stephanie with their child, Olivia.

Georgia is also survived by her sister Carol Lockard Kiolbasa.

A celebration of Georgia’s life will be held at the Presbyterian Community Church of the Rockies, 1700 Brodie Avenue in Estes Park Saturday, January 20, 2018, at 1:00 p.m. A reception will follow the memorial service at the church. William L. Peebles Former Estes Park business owner William L. Peebles, 84, husband of Maxine (Olson) Peebles, died Dec. 27, 2017, at the Arizona State Veteran Home in Tucson, Arizona. He was born June 4, 1933, in Denver, Colorado, the son of Denby and Georgia (Loveless) Peebles. He graduated from Lakewood High School and attended Colorado Teachers College in Greeley. He served with the U.S. Navy during the Korean War. He married Maxine Olson on Dec. 17, 1960, in Oberlin, Kansas.

They made their home in Denver. He built the Burgher Haus Restaurant on Highway 66 (now Baba’s Burgers on Moraine Ave.) in 1976. He would spend his summer in Estes and winter

in Denver. Survivors include his wife, in Green Valley, Arizona; four daughters, Kim (Brian) Larson, Greeley, Colorado; Sheri (Martin) Steinemann, Henderson, Nevada.; Sheila Peebles, Denver; and Karen Peebles, Green Valley; one grandson, Hunter Larson; and two granddaughters, Karin Waters and Lia Steinemann. He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, John and Edward Peebles, and one sister, Marion (Peebles) Fitchette. A memorial service will be held in Estes Park the spring. Orpha Kendall Orpha Irene Kendall, age 88, passed away on January 16, 2018. She was born in Phillipsburg, KS to Bill & Neva Morgan. Orpha married her true love, Orval Kendall on October 1, 1942 and they just recently celebrated their 75th wedding anniversary. Orpha & Orval had four children; Delbert, De Etta (deceased), Sheila and Daniel.

Orpha touched many people in her lifetime, whether it be while she and Orval ran their restaurant, her time at State Farm Insurance Company, during her 47 years as a trustee at MacGregor Ranch or through one of the many volunteer organizations that she enjoyed supporting. We as a family, are immensely proud of who Orpha, often known as Grandma Kendall, was

She is survived by her husband Orval; her brother Howard Morgan of Loveland, CO; three of her children, Delbert & Judy Kendall of Estes Park, CO; Sheila & Steve Coleman of Crown King, AZ; Daniel & Lynn Kendall of Greeley, CO, as well as 10 grandchildren, many great-grandchildren and several great-great grandchildren. Orpha cherished her family and she will remain the light that leads us all.

A Memorial Service will be held January 22, 2018 at 1 p.m. at the Hyde Chapel, YMCA of the Rockies. A reception will immediately follow the service.

Janet A. Nelson Janet A. Nelson of Westminster, Colorado, passed away without struggle on January 7 with her husband and sister present. Janet was born in 1953 in Cleveland, Ohio to Marie B. and William V. Nelson (both deceased). She was the dearest sister to Carol Myers of Estes Park, and greatly loved Aunt to Heather Myers (Milliken, CO) and Eric Myers (Encinitas, CA.). Janet came to Colorado in 1980. She married Kevin Kaskie of Denver in 1983. Janet worked as a legal secretary for attorneys Crisman, Byron, and Johnson in Boulder from 1982 until 1992. She then worked for M-K Trucking, her husband's family firm, until shortly before her death. Janet's passion was animals, particularly the ones who suffered and had no voice:

the neglected, abandoned, and abused. She was an integral part of the Evergreen Animal Protective League (EAPL), and devoted many years to rescuing, fostering and adopting out dogs in need of loving homes. Throughout her illness of over two years, Janet never wavered in her positive outlook nor did she lose her wonderful sense of witty humor. She celebrated the preciousness of each day she was given. Even as her days remaining were few, she focused on the well-being of others. Her example of courage, grace, and hope will always be a beacon of bright light to those who knew her. A Memorial Service to celebrate Janet's life will be determined at a later date.

Howard L. Brigham Howard L. Brigham, 92, formerly of Estes Park, passed away Friday, January 5, 2018 in Sterling CO. Howard was born in Denver on September 6, 1925 to Elza Roy and Helen L. Brigham. He was the oldest of eight children.

Howard attended Manual High School from September, 1939 to January, 1943, at which time he joined the US Navy at the young age of 17. A World War II veteran, he served a four-year tour of duty overseas. On June 1, 1947 in Denver, Howard married the love of his life, Jean Kesson. Together Howard and Jean shared 69 wonderful years together and raised three children. In 1961 the family moved from Denver to Fort Collins, where he built a new home and lived until his retirement in December 1985. Upon retirement, the couple moved to Estes Park, fulfilling a dream of living in their favorite mountain town. In 2000, they moved to Sterling, CO to be closer to family.

Howard received his Bachelor’s degree in elementary education in August, 1951 and his Master’s degree in August, 1953 from the University of Denver. A life-long educator within both the Denver Public Schools and the Poudre School District, he served in a variety of roles throughout his career—classroom teacher, principal, and elementary school counselor. Additionally, he taught children of migrant farmers in

northern Colorado for many summers and taught English as a Second Language to immigrants in downtown Denver. He was very involved in various functions within the school districts, Colorado Department of Education, and professional education organizations.

Howard was devoted to teaching and helping children, and he never hesitated to assist anyone in need.

Howard was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Sterling; he loved his family and God above all else.

He was truly the greatest example of unconditional love and humble sacrifice. He made everyone’s life better, most certainly his family of whom he was extremely proud. He brought honor to the role of husband, father, grandpa, brother, uncle, and friend.

Howard is survived by sons Jerry H. Brigham and wife Cathy of Broomfield, CO; Randy L. Brigham and wife Terry of Estes Park, CO; daughter Kay L. Rich and husband Gary of Sterling, CO; eight grandchildren, and fifteen great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Jean, his parents, five brothers, and two sisters.

A memorial service was held on Wednesday, January 10, 2018 at First Presbyterian Church in Sterling, CO with Rev. Michelle Witherspoon officiating. Interment was at Fort Logan National Cemetery in Denver.
