Closures In The Northwest Section Of Rocky Mountain National Park Due To Cameron Peak Fire In an abundance of caution, due to forecast winds and extreme fire conditions, Rocky Mountain National Park is implementing temporary closures in the more remote northwest area of Rocky Mountain National Park due to the Cameron Peak Fire. The fire is approximately 4 miles from the park’s northwest boundary. This closure includes wilderness campsites, cross country zones and trail systems in the northwest section of the park. There are currently no road closures within Rocky Mountain National Park.

Included in this closure is the Mummy Pass Trail, Commanche Peak Trail, Mirror Lake Trail, Poudre River Trail, Crater Trail, Colorado River Trail, Red Mountain Trail, Grand Ditch Access, Skeleton Gulch Trail, Thunder Pass Trail, Little Yellowstone Trail and Holzwarth Historic Site access beyond the historic site. Closed cross country travel zones include Cascade Creek, Cache La Poudre, South Cache La Poudre, Hague Creek and Mosquito Creek. Twenty wilderness campsites are also included in this closure area.

If the Cameron Peak Fire moves into Rocky Mountain National Park, fire managers’ objective will continue to be full suppression of the fire.

When recreating in Rocky Mountain National Park visitors should always practice situational awareness, especially during periods of extreme fire danger. Always let someone know where you are going and when you are expected back. It is critical to plan ahead; before you hike, know

the weather and wind forecast. Watch for columns of smoke and hazy skies. Wildfire can move rapidly in the right conditions, faster than a person can run. Avoid canyons and draws and areas where there is a lot of dense and dry vegetation, such as high beetle kill and dead and down trees. Fire typically moves faster uphill than it does downhill. Avoid being at the top of a ridge with a wildfire below. Carry essential items, like a topographic map, and have wayfinding skills in case you need to evacuate an area.

If you see smoke or fire, call 911 to report it. Avoid traveling near it. Do not try to put out a wildfire by yourself.

A complete fire ban has been in effect in Rocky Mountain National Park since Friday, August 14.

Campfires, including charcoal briquette fires, are not permitted anywhere within the park. However, petroleum fueled stoves and grills will still be permitted in developed campgrounds, picnic areas and in designated backcountry campsites.

Stoves must be able to be turned on and off. Smoking is also prohibited, except within an enclosed vehicle, or stopped within a developed paved area devoid of vegetation for at least three feet. Visitors are reminded to properly extinguish all lighted smoking materials and dispose of properly. Fireworks are always prohibited within the park.

Rocky Mountain National Park always has Stage 1 fire restrictions in place, where campfires are prohibited in the park, except within designated campfire rings in picnic areas and front-country campgrounds. The last time a total fire ban (Stage 2 fire restrictions) was in place in the park was in July of 2018.

In response to the extreme fire danger in our area, the current level of fire activity with the Cameron Peak Fire and the continuing drought and wind conditions, pursuant to International Fire Code Section 307.1.1, EVFPD Fire Chief Wolf hereby issues an open burning ban within the Estes Valley Fire Protection District effective 08:00, August 14, 2020. This ban is for ALL open fires, including the following: • Building, maintaining, attending, or using fire for slash burning, campfires, recreational fires, or educational fires.

• Use of all private fireworks including approved fireworks (i. e. sparklers, fountains).

• Smoking on public property, except within an enclosed vehicle or building or an area at least three feet in diameter that is barren or cleared of all flammable material.

• Welding or operating acetylene or other torch with an open flame on outdoor property unless approved by the authority having jurisdiction.

• All burn permits are suspended until further notice Exceptions shall include: LPG or natural gas fired grills at private residences, compressed gas grills or Coleman fueled stoves and lanterns at developed campgrounds or picnic grounds, approved grills used for the commercial cooking of food, flares used by Public Safety agencies to warn

the public of danger, training fires used by Public Safety agencies.

Please note campfires in approved developed campsites or picnic grounds and the use of charcoal grills are also prohibited.

This ban is dependent on the current fire danger and will be evaluated regularly.

This ban shall be effective from 8:00, August 14, 2020 until otherwise lifted or changed by the Fire Chief or his designee.

On August 8 at 1:50 p.m. police arrived in the 200 block of W. Elkhorn Ave. where they issued a summons to a 19 year old female from Estes Park for theft times two.

On August 10 at 1:17 p.m. police stopped a 49 year old female driver from Estes Park at Hwy. 34/Hwy. 36 and issued her a citation for following too closely.

On August 13 at 10:02 p.m. police were called to the 300 block of E. Wonderview Ave. where they arrested a 43 year old male from Severance, CO for harassment and domestic violence. The male was transported to the Larimer County Jail.

On August 15 at 12:47 a.m. police stopped a 67 year old male driver from Estes Park at Hwy. 34/Hwy. 36 and issued him a citation for following too closely.

On August 15 at 6:26 p.m. police were called to the 200 block of W. Elkhorn Ave. where they issued a summons for theft times three to a 35 year old male from Greeley, CO. On scene they also issued a summons to a 33 year old female from Greeley, CO for theft times three.

On August 16 8:51 a.m. police stopped a 45 year old female driver from Fort Collins, Colorado in the 1700 block of Big Thompson Ave. and issued her a citation for passing on the left when not clear of traffic.

Update From Longs Peak Scottish Irish Highland Festival

The Longs Peak Scottish Irish Highland Festival has been a highlight of September in Estes Park for 44 years; with Celtic music, ethnic dancing, bagpipe bands, Scottish Highland athletics, representatives of many clans., etc.

In the early 1970s, Estes Park was like most mountain towns, relying on summer tourism which ended with Labor Day weekend. Forty-four years ago the festival’s founder, a resident of Estes Park, Dr. James Durward, had a vision to extend the fall season to our Estes valley. He started this festival recognizing that September was a beautiful time for people to come to the mountains and the Longs Peak Scottish Irish Highland Festival came into being. Over the years this festival has become the most attended event in Estes Park.

Understandably, the festival has run into some difficulties for 2020. The event followed all the rules and recommendations that the local, county and state requested, applying for the required variance through the county health department, providing all the requested information. On July 30, the festival was informed that the variance request was denied. We were told we could only have a maximum of 175 people, compared to the number of guests that usually attend.

For safety’s sake I decided it would be in the best interest to cancel the fest, to protect festival spectators, vendors, entertainers and staff, who must come first.

The festival has been able to survive several down turns over the 44 years, but nothing like this. It is with deep regret that the Longs Peak Scottish Irish High-

land Festival has had to cancel the majority of events, scheduled for September 11-13, 2020.

With all that being said, the health department has given us approval to hold the Scottish Athletics and Hurling portions of competition, on Friday through Sunday, September 11, 12 & 13, 2020.

Schedule of 2020 Events: Highland Games Friday–Sunday Friday, Sept. 11- Scottish Challenge Strongman Competition from 10 a.m.

- 5 p.m.

Saturday and Sunday September 12 and 13Highland Athletic competition 9 a.m. - 5 p.m.

There will also be some hurling clubs from Denver who will play a few games Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. - 5 p.m.

This will be a first in the festival’s 44 year history but, we will come back bigger and better next year, with a full venue for the festival’s 45th anniversary. We have an extraordinary festival planned and are eagerly looking forward to September 10-12, 2021.

For all of our festival attendees, who purchased any 2020 tickets, weekend packages and VIP packages, the festival will be rolling everything over to 2021, for the 45th anniversary. The festival will honor all tickets purchased. Thank you, to all our supporters!

Arapaho, Roosevelt National Forests & Pawnee National Grassland Increase Fire Restrictions

Beginning Aug. 15, the Arapaho and Roosevelt National Forests and Pawnee National Grassland, located along Colorado’s northern Front Range and Grand County, will raise the level of fire restrictions on National Forest System lands in Larimer and Weld counties from Stage 1 to Stage 2 due to increased fire danger conditions. Grand County is also in Stage 2 fire restrictions. Stage 2 fire and shooting restrictions remain in place on National Forest System lands in Boulder, Clear Creek, Gilpin, Park and Jefferson counties.

Restrictions are in place to enhance public and firefighter safety, protect natural and cultural resources, help minimize human-caused wildfires and in response to changing local conditions. It is important to check with the local county you plan to visit as many also have fire and recreational shooting restrictions in place.

Within the Stage 2 Fire area on National Forest System lands on the Arapaho and Roosevelt National Forests and Pawnee National Grassland visitors may not: · Build, maintain, attend or use a fire, campfire, or stove fire. This includes charcoal grills and barbecues, coal and wood burning stoves and sheepherder’s stoves and includes their use in developed camping and picnic grounds except devices using pressurized liquid or gas (stoves, grills or lanterns) which include shut-off valves are permitted when used in an area at least three feet or more from flammable material such as grasses or pine needles. · Smoke, except within an enclosed vehicle, trailer or building. · Weld or operate an acetylene or other torch with open flame. · Operate or use any internal combustion engine (e. g. chainsaw, generator,

ATV) without a spark arresting device properly installed, maintained and in effective working order. (See order for specific details.) · Operate a chainsaw without an approved spark arresting device as described above, a chemical pressurized fire extinguisher (8 oz. capacity by weight or larger and kept with the operator) and a round point shovel with an overall length of at least 35 inches readily available for use. · Use explosives. · Possess or use a motor vehicle off established roads, motorized trails or established parking areas, except when parking in an area devoid of vegetation within 10 feet of the vehicle.

Additionally the Stage 2 Fire and Shooting restrictions for National Forest System land on the Boulder, Canyon Lakes and Clear Creek ranger districts within Boulder, Clear Creek, Gilpin, Jefferson and Park counties also prohibit the: · Discharge of a firearm unless in possession of a valid Colorado hunting license and lawfully involved in hunting and harvesting game.

Violation of fire restrictions could result in a maximum fine of $5,000 for an individual or $10,000 for an organization, or imprisonment for more than six months, or both. If responsible for causing a wildfire, one could be held accountable for suppression costs of that fire. To view the fire restriction orders and maps, go to www.fs.usda.gov/arp. The U. S. Forest Service reminds visitors that exploding targets or tracer bullets are never allowed on National Forest System lands. Visitors are asked to be careful as they enjoy their National Forests and Grassland.

More Than 345 Households Took Part In Estes Recycles Drive-Thru Day The lines of cars said it all – people had lots of old paint products to dispose of safely and had apparently been sorting through mountains of paperwork for shredding during the past few months.

Organized by the Community Recycling Committee of the League of Women Voters (known as Estes Recycles), the Rotary Club of Estes Park and Bestway Painting, the event was a scaled-down, and drive-thru, version of the usual annual Estes Recycles Day. The Presbyterian Community Church of the Rockies generously provided the venue yet again and while electronics and metal recycling were not accepted this year, the plan is to offer a full event in 2021 if at all possible.

More than 36 volunteers stepped up to make the day a huge success; some were residents who had simply seen the event advertised and wanted to help; others represented a wide range of community organizations.

Approximately 2,340 gallons of paint products were collected for proper disposal by Bestway Painting, and 8,000 pounds of paper were shredded and kept out of the landfill. Contributions to the Rotary Club Scholarship Fund were gratefully received, with more than $5,000 collected to help our local high school graduates.

Participants stayed in their cars and, encouraged by the fun mask signage on display (designs generously provided by the Estes Valley Library and prepared by Smith Sign Studio), all wore masks when speaking with the volunteers who unloaded their vehicles.

Thanks to all the volunteers and participants who made this event so successful and memorable.

An Exchange Student Farewell Estes Valley Sunrise Rotary with the support of Estes Park Rotary, sponsored a remarkable young exchange student from Chile, Antonia Talagante.

The two clubs joined together to give a farewell for Antonia as she returns to her homeland to continue her education with hopes of becoming a pediatrician. Her experience here in Estes was unforgettable and will stay with her for her entire life journey.

A special thanks to the three host families for their caring for, providing for, and tremendous mentoring of Antonia. She expressed her deep gratitude and shared that she has developed relationships here in Estes Park that she hopes will remain in her life forever.

The area on the west end of the lake is the Matthews-Reeser Bird Sanctuary. This was created several years ago because birders in the area wanted to preserve the area for both the migrating and nesting birds.

The species that nest in the sanctuary

For more than 30 years, the area around Lake Estes has been a great location for birding. Within that time, birders have documented more than 300 species of birds in and around the lake, many of which are rare in the state of Colorado.

One of these rare species was seen for the first time near the baseball field on August 17th. The bird seen was a female Painted Bunting! Painted Buntings are normally found from Texas, Oklahoma and Arkansas, east to Florida. I first saw the bird on the morning of the 17th, while birding near the baseball fields.

The female Painted Bunting is a 5-1/2 inch light-green finch. It is related to the Lazuli Bunting.

The Lazuli Bunting is a common nesting species in Colorado, more often seen east of the foothills.

Rocky Mountain National Park Announces Complete Fire Ban Due to the continued extreme fire danger, extended weather forecast and current level of fire activity in the State of Colorado, park officials have announced a ban on all fires within Rocky Mountain National Park. This ban was effective beginning Friday, August 14, and will remain in effect until further notice.

Campfires, including charcoal briquette fires, are not permitted anywhere within the park. However, petroleum fueled stoves and grills will still be permitted in developed campgrounds, picnic areas and in designated backcountry campsites. Stoves must be able to be turned on and off.

Smoking is also prohibited, except within an enclosed vehicle, or stopped within a developed paved area devoid of vegetation

for at least three feet. Visitors are reminded to properly extinguish all lighted smoking materials and dispose of properly. Fireworks are always prohibited within the park.

Rocky Mountain National Park always has Stage 1 fire restrictions in place, where campfires are prohibited in the park, except within designated campfire rings in picnic areas and front-country campgrounds. The last time a total fire ban (Stage 2 fire restrictions) was in place in the park was in July of 2018.

Caring For Those In Need By: Brian Schaffer

Doing what you’ve always done doesn’t get you what you’ve always gotten. We are now experiencing the law of diminishing return. So, if you keep doing what you’ve always done then you will slowly fade away and become non-existent. This was true prior to the global pandemic, but it’s especially true now. Businesses are faced with making changes to address the “new normal” or they will no longer be in business.

I’ve noticed many of our restaurants that are now delivering meals, offering curbside delivery, carryout options, and expanding their outdoor seating as a way to creatively serve people. I applaud the owners of these businesses, because it is not only saving their own investment, but keeping people employed who have depended on them for a paycheck. I’m inspired by the stories our clients share with us about the accommodations being made for them by their employers. People in business got into business to make money, so each of them are making the best decisions they can to survive and even thrive during this challenging time.

I talked with one business owner who added a new business of selling ice cream because they now have extra space to do so. Instead of waiting for things to change, she made changes with the opportunity that our current reality presented her. I’ve heard it said, “If you work, inspiration will come. If you wait, inspiration will too.”

At Crossroads, we are continuing to serve every neighbor in need who comes to our

parking lot where we are loading vehicles with groceries, assisting with utilities and rent payments, and sharing words of hope and encouragement. As you can imagine, we have followed suit with the businesses in town and have implemented creative changes to ensure we are able to safely and securely serve every person in our community who is struggling to make ends meet.

Our team of volunteers have gladly welcomed the changes and are helping us in many ways to provide basic human services to Estes Valley residents in need. In addition to all of this, we have experienced an increase in giving from individuals in our community to help us purchase the necessary resources to sustain the demand we’ve been experiencing over the summer.

We are extremely grateful for the many partnerships we are benefiting from within our community. We are truly better together!

We are anticipating a resurgence in the demand for groceries and housing assistance as move into the fall. The extra unemployment benefit has run out, kids are home from school, and seasonal work will be slowing down. The initial grantees – Aspen, Estes Park and Aurora – are promoting best practices for teleworking and social distancing during the COVID crisis: Aspen Support its Transportation Options Program by developing and hosting a training session, customized for the requirements of a tourist economy. Estes Park Entrepreneurial Center Announces Fall/Winter 2020 BASE Program This purpose-built offering focuses on the tangible results and services needed in the Estes Valley. Unlike traditional business accelerator programs that focus on services that may not fit every business, our BASE Program will give you the training you need for your market.

Estes Park Great Decisions Group Meeting Sept. 1 The Philippines and the US: Discussion The Foreign Policy Association annually puts together a booklet concerning American foreign policy decisions in order to stimulate discussion of US foreign affairs. This booklet is called “Great Decisions.”

The Estes Park Great Decisions Group meets monthly to discuss this booklet's chapters. Our next meeting will take place on the first Tuesday of next month; Tuesday, September 1st, at 11:30 a.m. via Zoom conferencing.

The September discussion will concern the Philippines and the US.

Town To Begin Broadband Fiber Construction Downtown In late September or early October of 2020, Estes Park Power and Communications will begin construction to run broadband fiber in the downtown area along Elkhorn Avenue.

This construction will occur in phases and is the first step in making Trailblazer Broadband service available to downtown locations beginning in 2021. On Tuesday, September 1, 2020, at 4 p.m., Estes Park Power and Communications invites the community to attend a virtual public meeting to learn about project timing and construction details.

On recommendation from the Larimer County Sheriff, the Board of Larimer County Commissioners today voted 3-0 to adopt an ordinance banning open fires in Larimer County.

The fire ban goes into effect today, August 18, 2020, and stays in effect until noon Sept. 18, 2020.

This fire ban replaces an earlier fire restriction adopted on July 21, 2020.

The fire ban includes: • No open fires, open burning, including camp stoves and grills and any cooking fires. • No welding, or operating acetylene or other torch. • No smoking in the open, including trails, parks and open spaces or outside of buildings. • No Fireworks or fireworks displays produced by combustion, detonation or deflagration.

Simply put, clothing moths—not to be confused with miller or pantry moths—are the scourge of the Earth.

Not a fan of flying insects to begin with, when their larvae began munching on my treasured World War I wool uniforms, it was time to declare the battle had begun with no holds barred.

I didn’t realize we had a problem until one afternoon I caught a fleeting glance of an insect escaping from view behind the headboard of my bed. I immediately began investigating the dastardly creature and was not happy with what I discovered.

Did you know that one female clothing moth can lay from fifty to a thousand eggs at one time? I was terrified.

While I don’t own that many wool garments—and the moths could devour any one of them without too many tears on my part—you don’t mess with my WWI uniforms.

While moth balls might have been an easy solution, it wasn’t an option in our house. As most of you know, since I’ve been found guilty and convicted of snoring, my husband and I sleep at opposite ends of the house, me with two of our beloved pets. So, there’s no way moth balls with their pungent odor and chemical composition were an option. But I did find some odorless moth traps online that—if you give re-

views any credence—assured me would help eradicate the onslaught.

When the traps arrived, I was pleasantly surprised: Within a day or so there were more than twenty little tiny moths stuck to the adhesive surface.

While that was encouraging, it didn’t address the root of the problem: the larvae. Afterall, they’re the ones that feast on the natural fibers of wool. Simply put, it's impossible for adult moths to eat your clothing and valuable natural fabrics.

Most moths only have mouths during their larval, or caterpillar stage, which lasts from about two weeks until the insect is about a month old. The clothes moth is the variety most likely to destroy your garments.

Unlike most, these insects hate light and prefer to hide in dark closets, where the females can discreetly deposit their larvae onto the nearest

suitable garment.

The next step we took was one recommended by a number of websites: Freeze the dastardly buggers for a minimum of three to four days.

We’re fortunate since my husband’s occupation is primarily commercial refrigeration, we have our share of appliances that can cool and freeze whatever is required. I wouldn’t call our garage a refrigeration graveyard because everything is operational. But let me just say that Joel can’t bear to see a perfectly good appliance be unnecessarily turned into scrap. Fortunately, a side-by-side refrigerator freezer he rescued a number of years ago proved to be perfect for the task at hand. After removing the shelves from the vertical freezer side, it could not have provided a better place to hang the uniforms for their cryogenic journey.

Then, I purchased moth-proof garment bags for them to be stored in after their time in the freezer came to an end. Cedar rings for the tops of the hangers were also ordered as an added deterrent. It’s not certain that cedar actually helps, but it couldn’t hurt.

By the time you read this, all of my treasured uniforms will be safely tucked away with yet more moth traps in a closet that is rarely accessed. Even so, professionals advise that the garments be moved around and checked periodically—moths don’t like movement. To be honest, I’m saddened by

all of this. These uniforms have stood guard in my room for several years without a problem. It’s silly, but I felt protected. Plus, I just liked knowing they were there—one has stood in a place of honor on a mannequin and the other on a plastic form next to my bed.

Dang moths. But it should be noted that many thousands of moth varieties do have an important purpose in life.

During their short existence, they provide a significant food source for birds and other creatures. While saying that, I’m not so sure about the value of the clothing moth. The jury is still out on that one.

However, while it doesn’t necessarily apply to clothing moths, here’s an interesting experiment you might like to try. According to one website I visited, nothing attracts moths more than beer.

The site recommended mixing a paste of beer, brown sugar, and banana.

Continuing the experiment, they suggested painting the mixture on a few trees, settling into a lawn chair in the evening with a flashlight, and watching the multitude of moths you’re sure to attract. It’s an idea. In the meantime, I prefer the sign on our freezer that reads “Die moths die.” Our WWI uniforms are off limits and we will win the war.

‘WHO’S TO BLAME?’ We all agree that we are living in one of the most difficult times in the history of our nation. We’re dealing with a pandemic. We have uncertainty about whether to open schools, businesses, and other services. We have weather related problems: drought, fires, hurricanes, windstorms. Protests address many issues. Crime and violence are increasing. And we are being asked to select ‘leaders’ for our nation to solve these problems. To do this we need help.

We have an endless array of TV ads to give us insight into those running to help us decide… right? Probably not so much, since the credibility of claims made by and about the candidates is continually challenged, often vilified.

Recently I came across a book focusing on ‘accountability’, sharing qualities of people who can be counted on. We need to consider these, both in order to make good leadership choices, but also to examine ourselves to see if we are these types of people. In his book, ‘Flipping the Switch’, John Miller gives five principles that result in ever-growing effectiveness in success and leadership in life: Learning; Ownership; Creativity; Service; and Trust. I wish each of you could read his book (borrow mine if you want). You’d be blessed and inspired to strengthen these areas in your life. You’d also be able to asses these qualities in those people who are soliciting our vote in this fall’s election.

Of these qualities, one stands out as a quality we should demand of ourselves and those candidates and programs we support…‘Ownership’. Miller says you can tell who is playing the ‘blame game’ and who is willing to accept ‘ownership’ for his own actions and sense of responsibility, by questions they ask: “When will they…?”; “Who dropped the…?”; “Why don’t they improve…?”. These types of questions show a ‘blamer’ mentality, someone who is continually placing the blame on others. Contrast these with questions like: “How can we solve this…?”; “What can I do to…?”; “How can I help…?”

Who do we blame when: we’re late for an appointment; our son gets into trouble; we’re in a bad mood; we have an accident; we get pulled over by a policeman; our nation suffers from a pandemic; we lose our job? Perhaps we should take a lesson from one school. Tired of the blaming and excuse-making by disgruntled parents, they composed the following: “Hello! You have reached the automated answering service for your school. Please listen to the following options before making a selection: ‘To lie about why your student is absent, press 1’; ‘To make excuses for why your student did not do his homework, press 2’; ‘To complain about how we do things, press 3’; ‘To swear at staff members, press 4’; ‘To ask why you didn’t get information that was actually sent home in your student’s newsletter, press 5’; ‘If you want us to raise your child, press 6’; ‘If you want to reach out and slap someone, press 7’; ‘To request another teacher for the third time this year, press 8’.

But if you realize that your child is responsible for his or her own behavior, classwork, and homework—and that it’s not the teacher’s fault for your child’s lack of effort and achievement—please hang up now and have a nice day!”

From yourself and those people and programs you support, demand that each take ownership, rather than continually blaming. Miller sums it up well. “Blame never solves any problem. We can’t play the blame game and take ownership at the same time. And, without ownership, nothing gets done, nothing gets fixed, and nothing improves.”

Five Fun Facts About… The Moose By: Dawn Wilson

This week’s featured animal is the moose. Moose continue to increase in population on the east and west side of Rocky Mountain National Park. A moose or two are even spotted in Estes Park each year. One of my favorite locations to photograph moose outside of Rocky Mountain National Park is the Poudre Canyon and North Park.

The Cameron Peak Fire is burning prime moose habitat in the Poudre

Canyon. Although wildlife have a natural instinct to flee from danger, like wildfires, the loss of habitat will have an impact on these large mammals. Thank you to the fire crews continuing to battle this blaze with as minimal habitat loss as possible.

1. The moose in Colorado are the Shiras subspecies, a smaller moose than those living in Alaska and Maine.

2. Moose only live in areas with sea-

sonal snow cover and do not tolerate temperatures above 80 degrees Fahrenheit.

3. A male moose is called a bull. A female moose is called a cow. A baby moose is called a calf.

4. For moose, only the males grow antlers. These palmated paddles of bone begin growing in early spring, stop growing by the end of the summer and shed each year in early winter.

5. Moose hair is hollow to help insulate them in cold temperatures.

Air Quality Advisory Issued For Larimer County The Chambers Lake / Cameron Peak wildfire burning in northwest Larimer County is causing air quality concerns for residents in Northern Colorado.

Due to wildfire smoke transported into the Front Range, Ozone and Fine Particulate concentrations could reach levels that impact people sensitive to poor air quality at times through Friday evening across the Colorado Front Range region.

The most significant air quality impacts are expected to be for locations within the Denver Metro area, as well as northward along the I-25 corridor to Fort Collins, including areas west of I-25 within the lower foothills.

In all these areas, people with heart or lung disease, older adults, and children should reduce prolonged or heavy exertion on Friday. For all other areas within the Front Range, sensitive individuals should consider reducing prolonged or heavy exertion until the air quality improves.

When air quality is impacted by fire, minimizing physical activity outdoors is recommended, particularly for children and anyone with lung diseases such as asthma. This is especially true for those with heart disease, respiratory illnesses, the very young, and the elderly. If able, it is recommended staying indoors until air quality improves.

“We are urging everyone to be aware and take appropriate precautions by staying indoors as much as practical and limit time spent doing outdoors activities,” says Shaun May, Environmental Health Services Director for the Department of Health and Environment. “Now is not the right time to go for a bike ride or take a hike. We can also help out by reducing air pollution by limiting vehicle usage by postponing trips or carpooling.”

Yellow Toadflax Linaria vulgaris This plant, which resembles a snapdragon, is some‐ times called butter‐and‐eggs with its yellow petals and hairy orange throat and spur. Introduced as an ornamental, yellow toadflax escaped gardens and has invaded meadows, forests, pastures, roadsides, and yards, displacing native plants. Plants stand 1' ‐2' tall, with numerous narrow leaves and clusters of flowers at the top. Toadflax spreads through seeds and creep‐ ing roots that create dense patches of plants. To prevent seed spread: Cut, bag, and dispose of flowers, buds, and seed heads. Note that pulling, digging, and mowing can cause additional plants to sprout from extensive roots. To eradicate: Herbicides can be effective for killing root system, may have to repeat for several years.

Larimer County Presents 2020 Environmental Stewardship Awards The Board of Larimer County Commissioners presented the 2020 Environmental Stewardship Awards to four groups today to honor their commitment toward environmental responsibility and keeping Larimer County a great place to live.

Each year residents, businesses and organizations are selected for their innovative ways that help benefit of our environment and planet. Those selected are nominated by the Larimer County Environmental and Science Advisory Board. Since 1995, 92 awards have been presented including those today.

Wildland Restoration Volunteers Active since 1999, Wildland Restoration is a volunteer non-profit organization. Their projects focus on restoring trails and riparian habitats, removing noxious weeds, building artificial beaver dams, and other activities to restore rivers and streams.

The Young Gulch Trail Restoration Project in the Poudre Canyon restored a trail severely damaged following the High Park Fire in 2012 and again in the 2013 floods, both of which made the trail impassable. Between 2016 and 2019, 821 volunteers working on 51 separate projects repaired 42 stream crossings and miles of trail. The trail opened to the public Dec. 13, 2019.

The project is an example of the passion and commitment to the restoration of important outdoor places and habitats in Larimer County. Volunteers gain education opportunities that build lifelong skills and relationships.

City of Fort Collins Water Treatment Facility Forging a path to meet their Climate Action Goals, the City of Fort Collins installed a micro-hydroelectric generator to produce 20% of their water treatment facility’s electricity. In addition to reducing greenhouse gas emissions, the generator is a source of renewable energy and improves air quality.

A project of this type is usually found in much larger operations, yet the city adapted the concept for use on a smaller scale. The city’s efforts toward

conversion to renewable energy provide a significant pollution-reduction benefit to residents in Larimer County.

Kids in Nature Since 2007, Kids in Nature has introduced and connected kids with environmental awareness, nature, land stewardship, and the importance of public lands as a valued resource.

Over 400 children were served in 2019 by volunteers, parents, and counselors, having a positive impact on their lives and well-being.

Some of those in the program have never experienced the landscape outside of a city. What sets the program apart is they also provide these opportunities for at-risk kids who don’t get to experience outdoor activities. Four programs are offered: Mammals in the Mountains; We Need Trees; Aquatic Macro Invertebrates; and Fire Awareness.

Xanterra Travel Collection Near the top of Trail Ridge Road in Rocky Mountain National Park is the Alpine Trail Ridge Store and Café.

Xanterra Travel Collection runs the store and in 2007 installed a small 9panel solar array, producing 1.78 kilowatts of electricity. That’s enough to run a big window air conditioner.

The results were so impressive that in 2008 they expanded the array to 153 solar panels that generate 56kW of electricity - a whopping 90% of their electrical needs. They don’t need their diesel-powered electric generator, which used 5,500 gallons of fuel each year. The solar array keeps 56 metric tons of CO2 out of the air and saves $30,000 per year in electric costs.

The store also uses low-flow water fixtures and LED lights, 36% percent of food and beverage offerings from local vendors. Their work is ongoing to continue to reduce greenhouse gases and other waste in an ecosystem extremely sensitive to pollutants in an area that so many people enjoy.

Relax And Recharge, Indoors Or Out, At The Library

These days, staying connected is more important than ever. We’ve been working to make sure library patrons are logged in and powered up for all the things that matter, whether it’s for school or work, emailing family or relaxing with some streaming video.

Here are three ways we’ve been working to help meet your everyday tech needs: First: connecting inside the building. We’ve set up spaces inside the Library for laptop users to work and charge up their devices. Look for the tall round tables throughout the library, located near power outlets. Indoor work spaces have been busy all summer long.

During open hours, we also have multiple public computers available for 20 and 50-minute sessions. Printing, scanning, and photocopying are all available too. We also have an additional computer dedicated to signing up for and printing Rocky Mountain National Park timed entry passes.

Second: outdoor places to charge up. Last month, we had just one outdoor outlet. It wasn’t very conveniently located, yet patrons were doing their best to charge their devices.

Fortunately, a solution was at hand.

The library is surrounded by sunny benches, a long seating ledge near the front entrance, and the cool and

shady Storytime Garden tucked in our building’s northwest corner.

Now thanks to a visit from our friendly local electrician, long pipelines of power outlets are now available in each garden area. Look for the gray covers running along the garden walls. These outlets can be used by you, your students or guests 24/7.

Third: we’ve given our outdoor WiFi network a signal boost! You can access the free Estes Valley Library WiFi network from your socially-distanced car in the parking lot, from the seating around the library building, and even from the grassy bank of Black Canyon Creek!

The parking lot north of the Library has an especially good signal.

Connecting is easy: no password, no time limits, and no open hours— our speedy 100 Mb/s connection is available 24/7. Completing the downtown WiFi map is the Town of Estes Park’s free Wapiti WiFi, which stretches from Town Hall into Bond Park. Look for both of these networks next time you’re enjoying downtown Estes Park.

2020 offers all of us the opportunity to celebrate not only the passage of the 19th Amendment but also the achievements of women over that last 100 years. Celebrations are planned nation-wide, in every state and in local communities. A number of local organizations and community leaders, under the leadership of Jean McGuire, have formed a committee to coordinate the local celebration under the title, “100 Years: A Celebration of Women.” As a part of the festivities, we plan to collect stories about Estes Valley women in the form of paragraphs. Submission period: now to August 26. Maximum length: 200 words, A story about any woman with a connection to Estes Park. These paragraphs will be collected by the Estes Valley Library. They will then appear in the local newspapers and 100 will be chosen to be published as a booklet for November release.

The Story Of Jill Lancaster Jill Lancaster moved to Estes Park in the spring of 2012. Living in Fort Collins for over 36 years, Jill always loved the Estes Valley, spending many holidays with family at the YMCA and other places in Estes. With her Master’s Degree in College Student Personnel administration from CSU, Jill had a varied career in non-profit management, serving her well when she became the Executive Director of the Estes Park Non-Profit Resource Center in 2012. Jill started part time with the organization, and with the support of a dedicated Board of Directors, built the organization into the influential force it is in the community today.

The floods of 2013 brought the community together to respond to the disaster and to help those in need.

Through EPNRC, Jill organized and staffed the volunteer clearinghouse to get important help and resources to

At the same time, the Larimer County Workforce Center approached Jill to coordinate the Workforce Recover Grant program, helping hundreds in the community with employment and recovery from the floods. Through the volunteer clearing house and the Recovery Grants, Jill’s commitment to the community and its citizens was exemplary.

Under Jill’s leadership, the EPNRC started many initiatives, including the Estes Gives Back Program, where local businesses pledge 1% of their revenue to local non-profits, and the Estes Legacy Program encouraging sustainable funding for the many non-profits in the Estes Valley. Jill understood that non-profits are vital to the fabric of the community, and finding ways to make these organizations financial sound and well run is the legacy she’s left to the community that will have positive impacts for years to come.

The 100th Anniversary Of The Passage Suicide Prevention Golf Tourney Winners Of The 19th Amendment Arrives By: Jean McGuire

Most of us now believe it is the right and duty of all citizens of the U.S. to register and vote. But this has not always been so.

As originally written, our Constitution gave most of the decision-making power on who could vote to the states and most states retained that privilege in the hands of State Legislators, all men. In our early history, only white, male property owners were allowed to vote. Some early colonial women, in some states, were granted the right to vote if they paid taxes, owned property, or functioned as independent heads of households, but a woman voter who remarried lost her right to vote. By 1807, women in all states no longer had the right.

As citizens of Colorado now, we have some of the most open, fair and inclusive voting practices in the country. A nonpartisan process for redistricting will be implemented after the census in 2021 and is being touted as a model for the rest of the country. Our mail ballot elections are safe, secure and simple. We have higher registration numbers and voting numbers than almost any other state, and the security of our elections has been called the best in the country.

We also have historical first-in-voting rights that are less well known. In the Colorado State Constitutional Convention of 1875-76 there was debate about giving women full suffrage.

While that was defeated, women were given the vote in school elections.

The first try for full suffrage through the ballot in Colorado was initiated in 1877, but failed. For the next several years, the Colorado suffrage movement worked tirelessly toward another chance. They were aided by leaders in the national movement, and by organizations like the Women’s Christian Temperance Union, the Grange, Farmers’ Alliance, the Knights of Labor, and the Populist Party.

A second referendum on state suffrage was held on Nov. 7, 1893 which finally succeeded. While this was not the first time a state had allowed women voters, it does have the distinction of being the first time a statewide vote of the then all male electorate

supported women voting. Additionally, the next year, three women were elected to the Colorado House of Representatives; another first in the U.S. Nationally, the campaign for women’s suffrage was a small but growing movement in the decades before the Civil War, but it was not until 1848 and the Seneca Falls Convention, organized by Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Lucretia Mott, that the movement for women’s rights, including the right to vote, began to organize at a national level.

The historical milestone for women nationally finally came to pass in 1920 with the passage of the 19th Amendment to the Constitution guaranteeing women the right to vote. After working for over 70 years, literally lifetimes, suffragists witnessed the US Congress pass a women’s suffrage amendment in June 1919. The 36th state needed to ratify the amendment was the Tennessee legislature, which passed it by a single vote on August 18, 1920. On August 26, 1920, the certification of the 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution granting Women’s Suffrage, was official. The exact words of the amendment are short: “The right of citizens of the United States to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of sex.”

While COVID-19 has put many celebrations honoring the 100th Anniversary of the passage of 19th Amendment on hold, let’s all take a moment to honor the courage and persistence of the women and men who fought for a women’s right to vote and eventually succeeded. We must also recognize the toll on those left out when the 19th amendment passed and the many barriers to voting that persisted for years and still persist today. More work remains to assure full voting rights to all, but a big thank you must go out to the Suffragists who worked tirelessly for decades to ensure women can vote!

Too many who have the hard-earned right to vote, both women and men, do not use it. Not voting means you voted by default – for whomever wins.

Isn’t it time to fulfill our ancestors expectations? VOTE!!

With the new consciousness of ecology we will see heightened economic effects, both as a tourist destination and as mountain community.

Since the pandemic pointed out that city air is unhealthy, mountain living has become very appealing for all new reasons – beyond the attraction of hiking in the great outdoors.

Similar to the mass exit to suburbia after WWII, families search for communities with trees, breathable air, clean water, and generally healthy atmosphere.

Despite the three days of ppm warnings last year, cautioning local residents with respiratory ailments to stay indoors and despite the plastic particles discovered in the air over Rocky Mountain National Park, Estes fits these parameters. Our water and air are still “clear.”

This new recognition has broadened the expanse of college offerings in, specifically, environmental economics. Most colleges offer Masters and PHD degrees, preferring applicants have a background in either economics or ecology before hand.

Colorado State University, however, offers a BA in Environmental and Natural Resource Economics. Under the Dept of Economics, CU, Boulder offers degree programs and hosts an annual workshop for graduate students and professionals wishing to present developing projects. Yale offers Master and PHD degrees plus post PHD studies (from the Environmental and Natural Resources Group) with professors in both fields, heavily vested in research.

Harvard, true to form, goes beyond degree programs, by presenting numerous webinars, podcasts, even a blog, all hosted by the Harvard Environmental Economics Program (Harvard Kennedy School). Even some community colleges, including Front Range, have a course or two on environmental economics.

As a tourist community, our economy has long been compelled by ecology. Travelers come here to “get away” but they expect certain amenities when they get here. I no longer find it surprising when friends call to ask me which lodging offers recycling and other ecological amenities. Even before the appearance of the coronavirus, there has been a marked increase in events looking for ecological resources, but it does no good to offer compostable alternatives for picnic ware when we

have no public composting. Some event hosts have solved the dilemma by transporting to Eco-cycle.

The Town of Estes Park is doing an admirable job of addressing transportation changes. We have one new electric trolley with plans for another. Since the cost is covered by a grant, it is not likely to be rerouted

by COVID-19. We offer visitors and residents the use of public chargers for electric vehicles, supplemented by local private entities. PRPA has promised to convert energy production over the next 10 years, replacing the coal and gas sources with 100% renewable energy from solar, wind, and water.

The sooner, the better.

Allenspark (under normal circumstances) offers broader, more inclusive waste disposal than Estes. The Boulder County network has options for composting, along with extensive recycling options – including many things considered “hard to recycle” (usually meaning not overly profitable.)

Loveland and Fort Collins both have expanded options within the County. The Residential Recycling Center (RRC), operated by Larimer County, is, for households, a wonderful (and clean) upgrade to the Transfer Station (TS). However, many Estes households still take their recycling to Loveland, Fort Collins, or Boulder County – because these entities accept a wider collection than our RRC can accommodate. Many businesses prefer these facilities to the Transfer Station. This makes it impossible to determine a true redirection rate for the Estes Valley.

How can this possibly affect our local economy? That will remain to be seen. Considering the downhill flow, we do not see pollution from the Front Range in our water. However, we are currently seeing smoke from both non-local Colorado fires and occasionally those as far away as California. Air knows no geographical impediments to direction.

Therefore, what we throw in the landfill, the cars we drive, the energy we use and how it is produced, do effect our air. The temperature here is still 10 degrees cooler than Fort Collins, but it is 10 degrees warmer than when I moved here. Our animals are moving to higher, cooler ground. Increased floods and fires do effect our very survival. Other mountain towns are making changes to ensure ecological economic sustainability. How long do we wait?

A yes vote for the National Popular Vote would make our votes irrelevant.

Our electoral college would vote for whoever the rest of the country votes for.

This is a huge voter suppression bill.

If we give away our vote for president to the national popular vote, Colorado will have zero say in the presidential election, thereby discouraging people to vote. Voting yes means going along

with populated states and whatever they think is best for us. The reason we have the electoral college for President is so that smaller, less populated states actually have a say in the Presidential election.

If you value your voters rights, vote no and keep your vote in Colorado.

Most of us live in Colorado because we are independent. Let’s continue to respect that freedom…in this case, so your vote counts.

Support Sen. Cory Gardner To The Editor: This letter is to urge you to support Sen. Cory Gardner for re-election. I’ve always been an independent voter and have voted for members of either major political party in previous elections. As a long term resident of northern Colorado and also having become very familiar with southeastern rural Colorado through past work, there are two major reasons why I strongly support Sen. Gardner: While the Colorado front range has expanded exponentially in the last few decades, there are still important agricultural regions left in our state. Just recently Sen. Gardner completed a tour through some of these areas, ranging from dairy to cattle, to fruits and vegetables. Sen. Gardner truly understands the specific needs of the agricultural communities of Colorado and has demonstrated during his term that he works with their best interest in mind. Nobody supports rural Colorado like Sen. Gard-

ner does. With the recent pandemic we have all learned how seriously supply lines can be interrupted. Food is the most important supply line for everybody and that’s why all of us in the urban areas should sleep better at night, knowing the Colorado agricultural community is there to sustain us. Secondly, having retired to a small ranch near RMNP, I became acutely aware of the need to preserve the beautiful open spaces in Colorado and as a result have put several hundred acres under conservation easements. Therefore I was elated when Sen. Gardner worked so hard in bi-partisan fashion for the passage of the Great American Outdoors Act and successfully pursued permanent funding for the Land and Water Conservation Fund.

So, please give Sen. Gardner your vote in November, he deserves it!

Siv Verschuur Estes Park resident Siv Verschuur died in Fort Collins, CO on Thursday August 13, 2020. She was 91 years old. Siv A. M. Johansson was born in Asige, Sweden on May 14, 1929. Her parents were Hilding and Astrid (Hellstrom) Johansson. Siv attended schools in Halmstad Halland and Statens Nursing College at Stockholm, Sweden. She became a Registered Nurse, worked in operating rooms, administering anesthesia in Sweden, the New York Hospital for Special Surgery, and MD Anderson Hospital in Houston, TX. Siv married Jan Verschuur on May 23, 1956 in Asige. Siv was a dedicated and caring mother who gave up nursing to raise 5 children. While supporting Jan in his foreign service career, Siv was the rock in providing a safe and stable home environment as the family transitioned to new locations around the globe. With each new post, Siv set up the household and helped her family adjust to new schools, languages, and cultures. Siv was always the gracious hostess as she supported Jan in his career as Counselor in the American Foreign Service, hosting world leaders, astronauts, and American international executives.

In 1975, the couple purchased property in Estes Park and in 1985 became permanent residents.

Siv was a talented artist in many mediums from sketching, oil painting, stitchery, pottery, and making silver jewelry. Of particular note, she spent over two decades traveling weekly to her china painting classes

in Fort Collins and enjoying the comradery of her instructors and fellow artists.

Siv artistic endeavors led to her owning and operated Siv’s Trading, where she turned her artistic depictions of Estes Park into bags that were sold in boutique shops in downtown Estes. From there Siv’s Trading evolved into specializing in importing and wholesaling Ladies’ fashion accessories.

Always the Swede, Siv hand-sewed a traditional Swedish costume representing her region of southern Sweden. For many years, Siv proudly wore this costume and carried the Swedish flag at the Estes Park Scandinavian Festival.

Siv was a member of the Lutheran faith, the Order of VASA, Scandinavians of Estes Park, the Swedish Heritage Society of Northern Colorado, and Alumni Association of Statens Nursing School.

Siv was preceded in death by her parents, 3 brothers and a son, Vincent Verschuur in 1994. She is survived by her husband, Jan, sons Gerrit and John, daughters Astrid and Ingrid, 6 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren. Siv’s wishes were to be cremated and buried in Estes Valley Memorial Gardens and Asige, Sweden.

A private service for family and close friends took place this week at Estes Valley Memorial Gardens. Memorial donations may be made to the Salud Clinic of Estes Park in care of Allnutt Funeral service 1302 Graves Avenue Estes Park, CO 80517. See www.allnuttestespark.com.
