Incident In The Loft Area Of Rocky Mountain National Park

Early on the morning of July 27, park rangers were notified that a 15-year-old male from Boulder, Colorado, had taken a 300 to 400 foot sliding fall in The Loft area between Mount Meeker and Longs Peak. This is steep terrain covered with a mix of snow, water and rock. He received numerous injuries. Rocky Mountain National Park Search and Rescue Team members reached him at approximately 9 a.m. They provided advanced medical care.

Due to his location and injuries, Rocky

Mountain National Park Search and Rescue team members requested assistance from a Colorado National Guard helicopter from Buckley Air Force Base to extricate him via a hoist operation, using a winch operated cable. This occurred at approximately 12:30 p.m.

Rocky Mountain Rescue Group of Boulder County assisted with the helicopter hoist operations. He was flown to Upper Beaver Meadows and was transferred to a Flight For Life air ambulance who then flew him to Children’s Hospital.

On July 20 at 11:00 p.m. police were !called to a disturbance at 1120 Big Thompson Ave. On scene, they arrested a 49 year old male from Lakewood, CO and charged him with first degree assault, two counts of third degree assault and domestic violence against a 34 year old victim. He was transported to the Larimer County Jail.

Big Thompson Ave. police contacted a 34 year old female from Nederland, CO who was found to be in violation of bond conditions. She was issued a summons and later released.

On July 22, at 9:27 p.m. in the 600 block of N. St. Vrain police contacted a 31 year old male from Columbus, OH for driving without headlights. Upon further investigation, he was found to be driving under the influence of alcohol and he was arrested for DUI and transported to the Larimer County Jail.

On July 27 at 5:42 p.m., at 1125 Rooftop Way police contacted a 58 year old male from Fort Collins, CO for illegal camping. He was found to be wanted on warrants for two misdemeanors, one for failure to appear on a DUI charge from Colorado State Patrol and the other a failure to appear from Larimer County Sheriff on a DUI charge. He was arrested and transported to Larimer County Jail.

Happy 25th Anniversary To Rob & Julie Pieper And Poppy’s Pizza & Grill This week, Julie and Rob Pieper, owners of Poppy’s Pizza and Grill are extremely excited to be celebrating their 25th anniversary of owning this landmark business in town.

Rob and Julie both worked at the Stanley Hotel before owning Poppy’s, (it’s also where the couple met).

Rob started as the Front Desk Manager, then to Sales, then moved to managing the dining room. Julie worked at the front desk, as a concierge, and spent some time as the Assistant Director of Marketing and Fine Arts. In 1992, they moved to Denver, where Julie worked as the Executive Club Lounge Concierge at what was then the Westin Tabor Center, and Rob worked the front desk at the Brown Palace. When they came back from Denver, Julie came back as Executive Housekeeper, then moved to Sales & Catering at the Stanley. In the year before they purchased Poppy’s, Julie was also working a few shifts hosting at Mama Rose’s restaurant as well as at The Gazebo in the Courtyard Shops, Godfather's and Friar’s. You can see, this power couple had a huge amount of restaurant experience prior to purchasing Poppy’s Pizza & Grill.

Poppy’s originally opened as a cafeteria in 1989 and then the owners changed it to a pizza and grill in ‘91, with a smaller dining room.

Julie and Rob purchased the restaurant on August 1, 1994 and Julie quipped, “Who takes over a restaurant in Estes in the middle of summer!?”

When asked what has been their greatest challenge at Poppy’s in the 25 years in business, Julie said, “The flood of 2013 was obviously a huge challenge, and is an ongoing financial burden that’s changed our future dramatically, but I don’t feel like it was the biggest one. Our larger challenges are the daily things every business in Estes grapples with. Issues of staffing, seasonality, cash flow, keeping things fresh for your guests and yourselves, ensuring consistency, keeping in touch with new regulations, staying pos-

itive.”

Julie continued, “The greatest reward in owning Poppy’s has been having the ability to see a problem and fix it, without having to ask ten layers of supervisors permission. It’s also incredibly rewarding to provide good people with what we hope is a good place to work, good people to work with, and the opportunity to grow. Ultimately, there is the reward of hospitality. As one server put it years ago, ‘there’s just something humanitarian about feeding people, even when they’re paying you to.’” Eight years after taking ownership of Poppy’s, Rob and Julie purchased Mama Rose’s.

Rob and Julie have certainly become pillars of our community, and are so very generous when it comes to any special needs. They’re often found hosting fund-raising dinners for various nonprofits in the Estes Valley or donating food to any given need in our community. Their hearts and generosity stretch to the moon and back!

As for the future, Rob and Julie hope they can continue to grow and improve, and overcome the constant challenges of rising prices, rising expectations, housing hurdles, and seasonal shifts that will never really change enough to establish this as a year-round economy. Julie said, “We have been so fortunate to have a quarter century of serving this community we love.” And we all love them back!

To celebrate this momentous occasion, Rob and Julie collaborated with Rock Cut Brewing Co. and had a special anniversary beer made for us all to enjoy.

The Poppy’s Pika Pale Ale combines Rob’s love of Belgian yeasts and Julie’s love of American Pale Ales. Stop in and wish Rob and Julie a Happy Anniversary and raise a glass of Pika Pale Ale in their honor.

The Estes Valley Land Trust has conserved nearly 10,000 acres of land and is hosting an event to thank its leaders.

“The Forever Estes Circle is our group of individuals and families that have made a planned gift to the Estes Valley Land Trust,” said Jeffrey Boring, Executive Director. “The Circle has more than 30 members now and we hope to get them together, thank them and seek their advice on a few key issues.”

The Forever Estes Circle event is scheduled from 4-6 p.m. on Wednesday, August 21 at the home of Robin and Stacey Harding.

“Stacey and I made a planned gift to the Estes Valley Land Trust because we believe in the mission and want to help en-

sure the organization endures forever,” said Robin Harding, President, Board of Directors. “We think it’s more important than ever to preserve land in the valley and I look forward to discussing land conservation with our Circle members.”

The Forever Estes Circle event is also open to residents who have not made a planned gift to the Estes Valley Land Trust, but would like to learn more about this opportunity. “If you want to help preserve land around Estes Park, I’d love to talk to you about the land trust and planned giving,” said Harding.

Quota Helps Provide Ambulance #22 For Estes Park Health We all hope we’ll never need the services of an ambulance but we certainly want to be able to count on one if we do.

The Estes Park Health Ambulance Service covers approximately 1,000 square miles answering calls from Allenspark, Big Elk Meadows, Estes Park, Glen Haven and Pinewood Springs. After many years in service and over 180,000 miles, the oldest ambulance unit in the fleet is now in need of retirement.

A new, fully equipped ambulance will cost upwards of $250,000.

Our ambulances here must be equipped to handle mountain driving anywhere in our community as well as have the most up to date technical equipment to be able to respond to any emergency in our community.

This week, members of the Estes Park Health Foundation, personnel from the Estes Park Health Ambulance crews and Estes Park Quota gathered to celebrate the arrival of a new ambulance which will service the Estes Valley.

Since 1949 when Quota Club of Estes Park raised funds to provide the Estes Valley with their first ambulance, Quota has continued that commitment. This week, they donated funds for ambulance number 22!

Donations come to the Quota ambulance account from two sources; The E.P. Quota medical equipment Loan Closet, where a majority of the donations go into the ambulance account.

The Loan Closet is run by 14 volunteer Quotarian women, available to visitors and local residents 365 days a year.

The second source, accounting for the majority of their donations is collected by the Ambulance Fund Drive. The drive runs every three to four years. Starting in September, five Quota women; Barb Lister, Patricia Gaultier-Owen, Sheila Ellzey and Jean Siddle, sent out 11,000 letters, to all full and part-time residents requesting donations for their ambulance drive. Members of Quota were honored to present a check in the amount of $52,000.00 to Kevin Mullin, President of the Estes Park Health Foundation and to Guy Beasley for the 22nd ambulance.

The EP Health Ambulance crew is a group of dedicated men and women who provide a service for the thousands of residents in Estes Valley and for the millions of visitors to the Estes Valley and Rocky Mountain National Park.

It has always been the goal of Estes Park Quota to keep our ambulance fleet strong. This new ambulance is now in service, and is also debuting the brand new logo for Estes Park Quota.

Dr. Longley Parker and his wife, Julie at Aspen Eyecare have decided to take some much deserve rest and relaxation and have retired as of August 1, 2019.

Taking over the reins for them are Dr. Amber Busche and her husband, Aaron.

Dr. Busche has been in practice since 1996.

Amber and Aaron recently sold their portion of an eye care practice in Greeley, Colorado and tell us, “The mountains were calling.” The couple wanted to join a smaller community and be part of a practice where they can give more personalized care to their patients.

Both Amber and Aaron graduated from the University of Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls with Bachelor of Arts degrees. Dr. Busche received her doctorate from Southern College of Optometry in Memphis, TN. The Busches are a husband and wife duo who work hard to simplify the eyecare process and even make it fun! Their tagline is “Simply. Elevated. Vision.”

Dr. Busche said, “In addition to the services Dr. Parker offered, we will be adding some new technology to the office, to be able to evaluate the eyes and take images of the front and back surfaces of the eyes without the need for dilation.

This is a better exam without the side effects of light sensi-

tivity and blurred vision after the eye exam. It will give patients the ability to see the inside of their eyes and allow us to have photo evidence to monitor for changes in the future.

We are also looking to add services and products to better help patients dealing with ocular emergencies or dry eyes. We are also giving the office a little bit of a renovation to put our own style and touch on the surroundings.”

Dr. Busche and Aaron hope to collaborate with other businesses in our community and plan on building a lifestyle brand. Aaron is a Real Estate agent and they would one day like to combine their business endeavors in a retail/coffee shop atmosphere.

The couple has two golden retriever pups and they enjoy volunteering as a foster home for rescue dogs. They like to hike, paddleboard, camp and enjoy craft brews, or, as they say, “All the Colorado stuff!”

With summer comes houseguests, which is one of the reasons I like summer so much. When I know company’s coming, my energy level rises with my anticipation.

I start planning menus, pouring over the paper and local websites to learn of special events coming up, and the day before the guests arrive, I kick into housecleaning mode.

It’s hard for me to believe that some people actually like to clean their house. My friend MJ once complained that when her mother-in-law came to stay, her motherin-law cleaned. I’m sure Mother-in-Law thought she was doing MJ a favor. But MJ was upset because she wanted to clean her own house. I would have bought Mom-inLaw every cleaning tool on the market and said, “Have at it! ” To each her own.

I don’t really mind housecleaning but there are a lot of other things I’d rather do.

Being deadline driven, it is easier to accomplish when I know guests are coming.

Then it’s a mop marathon.

Each time I get out the vacuum, the dust rag, the rubber gloves, the sponges, and the glass cleaner, I entertain myself by trying to determine which chore is my least favorite. In the end, whichever task I’m doing at the moment is the one I wish I didn’t have to do.

In the last month the guests have come and gone on such a regular basis, we had a revolving door installed. Family and friends from Georgia, California, Nebraska, Missouri and Texas occupied the beds under our roof (not all at the same time). Sometimes the changeover had to be quick and the challenge with that was getting the sheets changed on the beds.

With each remaking of a bed, I swore I’d crack the code for which way the fitted sheet goes on the bed. Inevitably, I’d get it wrong. The first two corners would slip over the curved edges but then things got tight. I’d pull and tug and grunt (and break a nail), none of which did any good. The sheet would not stretch over the remaining bare mattress corners. So off came the

sheet with a snap.

Do overs. I’d try to rotate the bulk of fabric a quarter turn but with all that elastic curling around itself, I couldn’t tell if I’d rotated a quarter or a half turn. It was like starting from scratch each time I slipped a sheet corner over a mattress corner. Making beds is like a box of chocolates: you never know what you’re going to get.

Through the process of trial and error, I figured out that—AHA! —the tag on the sheet goes at the bottom right corner of the mattress. This made things much easier until I unfurled a sheet without a tag.

There’s gotta be a better way.

Stripes. From now on, when I buy new sheets, they’ll have stripes. That part will be solved. But there’s still the shopping issue.

It’s been awhile since I’ve bought sheets.

When I started my search, I discovered that there’s a whole world of sheet knowledge I don’t have. I quickly learned that a sheet is not a sheet is not a sheet. One does not determine the quality of a sheet by price alone. These days we have to consider thread count, ply, weave and something called staple length, which has nothing to do with the little metal fasteners that come from a stapler. (Thank goodness. This late-summerblooming woody vine is common in the montane zone, seen as a mass of small white flowers entwined in trees, shrubs, and along fences. Fine Arts Guild Auditions For “Grace And Glorie” Auditions for the Fine Arts Guild of the Rockies’ fall play are approaching! This year’s production will be the funny and poignant, Grace and Glorie.

Set in the Blue Ridge Mountains, this two-person play charms the audience with thoughtful moments, silly antics, laughter, and tears that stay with theater-goers long after the performance.

The play offers a stream of laughs and sentimental good humor, while the memorable characters share their most trying and tender moments. The performances will be November 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 8th, and 9th.

Two women are needed for the cast: Grace, a feisty 90 year-old cancer patient

who prefers her mountain cottage to a hospital; and Glorie, a tense, unhappy Harvard MBA, recently transplanted to the mountains, and Grace’s hospice volunteer.

Auditions will be held in the Wasson room of the library this Saturday, August 3rd from 9-11 a.m. and 2-4 p.m. Those interested should be prepared to sing a few bars from any song of your choice, keeping in mind this is not a musical. High Altitude Sickness Is No Joke Know The Symptoms And Know When To Get Help!

We love welcoming our visitors to the most beautiful place in the world, and we want everyone to enjoy their trip and stay safe. So, Estes Park Health wants to remind you that Altitude Sickness is real and can potentially be very dangerous.

During a quick trip around the town of Estes Park, you will notice that there are license plates from almost every state in the country. Most of those states are not anywhere near the elevation of Estes Park at 7,522 feet. People come to Estes Park wanting to hike, walk around the town and enjoy everything this mountain community has to offer. Many forget that while their mind is set on getting on the trail, the body is working very hard to acclimate to the new environment it’s been exposed to.

At high altitudes, oxygen molecules are further apart because there is less pressure to "push" them together. This effectively means there are fewer oxygen molecules in the same volume of air as we normally inhale at lower altitudes. In scientific studies, this is often referred to as "hypoxia."

Within seconds of exposure to altitude, ventilation is increased, meaning we start trying to breathe more, as the body responds to less oxygen in each breath, and attempts to increase oxygen uptake. Despite this response, there's still less oxygen throughout your circulatory system, meaning less oxygen reaches your muscles.

Within the first few hours of altitude exposure, water loss also increases, which can result in dehydration. Altitude can also increase your metabolism while suppressing your appetite, meaning you'll have to eat more than you feel like to maintain a neutral energy balance. Many visitors do not take this change into consideration, they don’t allow their body to acclimate and ease into activity and can find themselves in unhealthy situations removed from medical help.

The major cause of altitude sickness is going too high, too fast. For a body to acclimate it generally takes one to three

days at an altitude. Many visitors drive straight from the airport (5,280 ft) to Estes Park (7,522 ft). Then decide on the Bear Lake hike (9,449 ft) going all the way to Emerald Lake (10,110 ft) on day two. Day three, a trip up Trail Ridge Road to the Visitors Center (12,183 ft) and by the end of day, they may feel dizzy, be nauseous, short of breath, have loss of appetite and a headache. These are the signs of minor Altitude Sickness.

The remedy is going down to a lower altitude to let the body recover.

Visitors with existing medical conditions should check with their primary care physician before ascending to altitude. Please note that Estes Park Health does have same day, walk-in appointments (970-586-2200) if you start experiencing altitude sickness symptoms and want to see a physician. We also have a 24/7/365 Emergency Department if you feel that your symptoms have gone from minor to severe.

Estes Park Health offers these suggestions to help residents and visitors get the most out of being in Estes Park: • Check with your physician before going to a higher altitude • Give your body time to acclimate to the new altitude • Reduce alcohol, caffeine and salty foods • Drink plenty of water • Get plenty of rest • Eat regularly – high carb meals • Listen to your body and rest when needed Call 911 or seek emergency medical attention as soon as possible if you’re experiencing any severe symptoms like coughing, confusion, loss or coordination and decreased level of consciousness. Altitude sickness is much easier to treat if you address it before it progresses.

Write Your RMNP Story Are there special memories or stories in your mind of spending time in Rocky that always seem take your breath (and words) away? Have you ever thought of Rocky Mountain National Park as the perfect scene for a fictional mystery or classic romance storyline? If this sounds like you or someone you know, the Rocky Mountain Conservancy invites you to join us on August 10th for our writing workshop class, Write Your Rocky Mountain National Park Story, with Mary Taylor Young. Whether you picture yourself working on a story, a memoir, a poem, or a kid’s book, you will be provided with beautiful scenery to enjoy inside the park and instructor who is eager to help you brainstorm and structure your work to be its best! The class will meet at the RMC Field Institute (1895 Fall River Road) in the morning and will supply you with writing prompts and sample writings to help you get started. Each participant should bring writing materials, layers, sunscreen, a sack lunch, rain gear, and something to sit on in the field during the later portion of the outdoor workshop.

The instructor for this course, Mary Taylor Young, is a long-time Colorado

resident who has extensive experience writing about Western wildlife, cultures, and landscapes for 30 years. She is a well-known and best-selling Colorado author of Rocky Mountain National Park: The First 100 Years which details the park’s rich centennial history since its inception. In addition to her 17 book publications, Mary has also written hundreds of newspaper and magazine articles for various outlets, including the Rocky Mountain News. As a seasoned RMC Field Institute instructor, Mary has been teaching at the Field Institute every summer since 1988 and spent much of her time as a child learning to love nature and Rocky by staying at her grandparents’ cabin on Upper High Drive in Estes Park during the summer.

Jeep Jaunt Arrives In Estes Park August 24th A convoy of 350 Jeeps will make their way up the Big Thompson canyon once again this summer.

Townsquare Media's Jeep Jaunt returns on Saturday, Aug. 24, with the trek from Johnstown to Estes Park raising awareness for suicide prevention. Half of the registration proceeds will be donated to local organizations Team Wellness & Prevention and Alliance for Suicide Prevention.

The Baldpate Inn Presents Its 2019 Summer Enchanted Evenings

On Wednesday, August 7th, 2019, at 7 p.m., The Baldpate Inn is pleased to welcome Kay Turnbaugh and Lee Tillotson who will be speaking on their new book “Following in Their Footsteps: Historical Hikes of the Northern Front Range.”

Eight historical hikes of the Front Range of Colorado from Chautauqua to the old Fall River Road in Rocky Mountain National Park are highlighted in this new book by Kay Turnbaugh and Lee Tillotson. Then and now photos and an introduction to unique historical figures from each of the hikes will encourage you to “follow in their footsteps.”

Kay Turnbaugh owned a weekly newspaper in Nederland, Colorado for 27 years. She is the author of other books, including The Last of the Wild West Cowgirls, Around Nederland, and co-author of the second edition of Denver, Boulder, Fort Collins, and RMNP, 184 Spectacular Outings in the Colorado

Rockies.

Lee Tillotson is a retired teacher and nordic ski instructor and has co-authored a historical snowshoe trail guide and Rocky Mountain National Park Dining Room Girl: The Summer of 1926 at the Horseshoe Inn with Kay Turnbaugh.

Historical hikes are her passion. Lee is a member of the historic Rocky Mountain Climbers Club.

The Summer Enchanted Evenings at the Baldpate Inn, on Highway 7, are held every Wednesday throughout the summer beginning at 7 p.m. There is no charge, and refreshments are provided in the Key Room. The Baldpate Inn would love for you to be able to join them for the talk. Ian Buchanan-Good Samaritan Employee Of The Month For August

Ian Buchanan started his job in maintenance at Good Samaritan in November of 2018.

Ian was born in Boulder, Colorado and moved to Estes Park in the third grade.

He enjoyed playing a variety of sports at Estes Park High School which included football, baseball and wrestling.

Ian moved to Minnesota in 2008 and spent five years working odd jobs. Longing for the warmer climate and the

Rocky Mountains, Ian made his way back here to Estes Park. He now enjoys snowboarding, camping, and just about anything that has to deal with the outdoors and hanging out with good friends.

Celebrate Life In Estes Park And Tell Your Story

In August of 1989, I moved to Estes Park after graduating from Colorado State University, to accept a job teaching art at the elementary school. A dream job, in an amazing mountain town came true for me. At the time thought that I would commit to five-six years, now it's 30 years later and I want to bring people together to share their experiences of why they came here and how they have

carved out a home in this beautiful rugged valley. There are so many interesting, creative, hard-working people up here and we all have a story. Reading accounts of the different ways people showed up after the 2013 flood, and other natural disasters that this town has faced, it strikes me that we are a community that knows how to pull together and support during hard times.

So, this celebration is based on sharing during a non-crisis time to develop our relationships even more.

The event takes place Thursday, August 15 at Elkins Distillery from 4 p.m. to close.

Special Thursday Evening Program Climbing Longs Peak Join Rocky Mountain National Park's Climbing Rangers on Thursday, August 8 at 7:30 p.m. at the Beaver Meadows Visitor Center to learn about climbing Longs Peak. This presentation will discuss various climbing routes and lessons learned, with a focus on how to prepare for and manage risks for a successful ascent and descent of the classic Keyhole Route.

The Rocky Mountain National Park Climbing Rangers are experienced climbers and search and rescue professionals who patrol technical climbing and hiking routes on Longs Peak and elsewhere throughout the park. With decades of cumulative climbing, mountaineering, guiding, and search and res-

cue experience between them, they are excited to share their experience and help the public learn about the high mountain environment of Rocky Mountain National Park.

At 14,259 feet, Longs Peak towers above all other summits in Rocky Mountain National Park. The flat-topped monarch is seen from almost anywhere in the park. Different angles show the great mountain's unique profiles.

Changing weather reflects Longs Peak's many moods.

An excellent marriage and family counselor was addressing a group of parents and other family professionals. He said that shortly after getting married he titled his speech: â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;How to raise children!â&#x20AC;&#x2122; Sometime later, after having and dealing with the challenges his first child presented, his speech now was entitled: â&#x20AC;&#x153;Some helpful hints for raising children!â&#x20AC;? Now, after having had and faced raising three children, his speech began with: â&#x20AC;?Does anyone have any suggestions?â&#x20AC;? This shows us how difficult it is to raise responsible and well-behaved children. And this is certainly reflected in what is happening in our society with its high level of: bullying, violence against other children and, even people that are much older: (i.e.) two American teens being sought for three murders in Canada; smaller children killing younger siblings; school shooting carried out by school-aged youngsters; the list is almost endless. Therefore, good advice on how to raise children can prove helpful. Here are some suggestions from good advisors.

Bill Gates, a very successful business leader, shared some things with a high school class about some realities that most teens wonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t learn in school, things they need to know. Here are the rules he shared with them: (Rule 1) Life is not fair â&#x20AC;&#x201C; get used to it; (Rule 2) The world wonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t care about your self-esteem. The world will expect you to accomplish something BEFORE you feel good about yourself; (Rule 3) You will not make $60.000 a year out of high school. You wonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t be a vice-president with a car phone until you earn both: (Rule 4) If you think your teacher is tough, wait till you get a boss; (Rule 5) Flipping burgers is not beneath your dignity. Your grandparents had a different word for burger flippingâ&#x20AC;Śthey called it â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;opportunityâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;; (Rule 6) If you mess up, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s not your parentsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; fault, so donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t whine about your mistakes, learn from them; (Rule 7) Before you were born, your parents werenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t as boring as they are now. They got that way from paying your bills, cleaning your clothes and listening to you talk about how â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;coolâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; you thought you were. So, before you save the rain forests from the parasites of your parentsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; generation, try delousing the closet in your own room; (Rule 8) Your school may have done away with winners and losers, but life has not. In some schools, they have abolished falling grades and given many times to succeedâ&#x20AC;ŚThis doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t bear the slightest resemblance to anything in real life; (Rule 9) Life is not divided into semesters. You donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t get summers off and very few employers are interested in helping you â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;find yourselfâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;. Do that on your own time!; (Rule 10) Television is not real life. In real life people actually have to leave the coffee shop and go home to jobs; (Rule 11) Be nice to â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;nerdsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;. Chances are you will end up working for one.

One other very important element in child-raising are parentsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; setting a proper example. One anonymous writer put it this way: â&#x20AC;&#x153;He whipped his boy for lying and his cheeks were flaming red, and, of course, thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s no denying there was truth in what he saidâ&#x20AC;Śthat a liarâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s always hated. But the little fellow knew that his father often stated many things that were untrue. He heard the youngster swearing and he punished him againâ&#x20AC;Śheâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d have no boy as daring as to utter words profane. Yet the youngster could have told himâ&#x20AC;Śpoor misguided little elfâ&#x20AC;Ś that it seemed unfair to scold him when he often cursed himself. All in vain is splendid preaching, and the noble things we say, all our talk is wasted teaching if we do not lead the way. We can never, by reviewing all the sermons on the shelves, keep younger hands from doing what we often do ourselves.â&#x20AC;?

Review these words with your children they will be blessed by them.

Henry Weisser is a emeritus professor of History at Colorado State University.

After earning his Ph.D from Columbia University Professor Weisser taught History for 39 years. The focus of his talk will be upon the current economic and military changes occurring with America's basic allies.

8/12/19: "What Will Be the Supreme Court's New Normal?" Eric Waples, former Headmaster of Fountain Valley Schools of Colorado and Chair of History and Government of the Potomac School in McLean, VA, he taught courses on the Supreme Court for the past 47 years. While living in the Washington D.C. area, Mr. Waples and his students met with various Supreme Court justices and sat in on many cases. His presentation focus will be upon how the recent

addition of Justices Gorsuch and Kavanaugh affect personal alliances, methods of constitutional interpretation and case outcomes. He will explore these questions in the context of end-ofterm Court decisions involving the census, gerrymandering, the Peace Corps and other significant constitutional issues.

8/19/19: "Hot Spots around the world." John Roberts is a retired U.S. State Department officer. His service spanned deployments to U.S. outposts from the Middle East to Asia, including Vietnam. After retirement he taught in the International Affairs Department at Colorado State University. Based upon his overseas experience, he will discuss the many areas where the U.S. finds itself involved.

Campsites Seeing increase In Bear Activity In Boulder, Clear Creek & Larimer Counties Colorado Parks & Wildlife and the United States Forest Service has observed increasing human-bear issues on Roosevelt National Forest Service campgrounds and areas where people are dispersed camping in Boulder, Clear Creek and Larimer Counties.

Specifically, the increased reports of bears getting into improperly stored food in trees in Boulder County is coming from Lost Lake, Ceran St. Vrain and the Middle St. Vrain Creek drainage upstream from Camp Dick, Olive Ridge and Meeker Overflow campgrounds; Beaver Reservoir road dispersed camping area, Rock Creek road dispersed camping area and Crater Lakes in James Peak Wilderness. Additional issues have come from the Pawnee Campground at Brainard Lake with a bear that entered unoccupied tents containing scented items such as sunscreen, bug spray and marijuana. Other reports of bear activity include West Chicago Creek, Columbine and Pickle Gulch in Clear Creek County and multiple reports in Dowdy, West Lake and Chambers Lake in Larimer County.

"I'm not sure why but we have seen a significant increase in bears seeking food in tents, backpacks and camps in general in the Arapaho and Roosevelt National Forests,â&#x20AC;? said Kristin Cannon, area wildlife manager for CPW. â&#x20AC;&#x153;People planning on camping in this area should

be extra cautious and take care to store food, trash and toiletries in provided bear lockers or canisters. These items should never be stored in a tent, especially not this summer." â&#x20AC;&#x153;It is important to know how to act in bear country. Remember

you are responsible for your own safety and knowing what to do when recreating alongside bears and other wildlife,â&#x20AC;? said Forest Supervisor Monte Williams. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We appreciate every user taking extra precautions.â&#x20AC;?

Genealogical SocietyIrish Ancestry-August 8 By: Liz Stewart, EPGS President

The Estes Park Genealogical Society is sponsoring a free educational program on Irish Ancestry this coming Thursday, August 8, 2019, 4:30-6 p.m., in the Hondius Room at the Estes Valley Library, 335 E. Elkhorn Ave. Broomfield genealogist, Diane Barbour will present a program entitled, “Seeking the Emerald Isle: Irish History.” Her presentation will cover Basic Irish Genealogical Research using Irish Church, Census and Statutory Records and how history affected their availability.

Diane Barbour’s genealogical credentials are extensive, with 18 years of experience. She graduated from the National Institute of Genealogical Studies at the University of Toronto, earning a Professional Learning Certificate in Genealogical Studies (PLCGS). She is a ProGen 16 Graduate, an 18-month study group on becoming a Professional Genealogist.

Diane also completed the National Institute of Genealogical Research Program (NIGR) at the National Archives in Washington D.C. She has completed 17 courses of studies at various institutes, including “Researching Your Irish Ancestors,” at the British Institute. Diane is the Past President of the Broomfield Ge-

nealogical Society, Past Vice President of the Boulder Genealogical Society and writes a column for the Welsh, Irish, Scottish and English Genealogical Society, called (W.I.S.E.) Words, a quarterly publication. In addition, Diane volunteers at the Denver Public Library, 5th floor, Genealogy and Western History Department and at the Denver National Archives and Records Administration.

Anyone interested in genealogy and family history research is welcome to attend the meetings. The Society meets the second Thursday of every month through November in the Hondius Room at the Estes Valley Library. Due to library programing needs this fall, start times for EPGS meetings have changed and will now vary between 3:30-4:30 in Sept.-Nov., as noted below. Upcoming programs and new times include: Sept.

12, 3:30-Census and Maps, Oct. 10, 4:30-Finding Missing Family and Nov. 7, 4:00-Scottish Records. The Estes Park Genealogical Society (EPGS) meetings offer a wide range of speakers and programing. Freddy is about four years old and a lab/ shar-pei mix. He is good with other dogs and kids. He will do best as an only dog with an experienced owner. He is super friendly with everyone on his daily walks, but can be protective in his home environment. He walks good on a leash and is house trained. Handsome Cappy is about 10 years old and a long haired, orange tabby. He is a sweet and loving kitty that gets along with other cats, but should be an only kitty in his forever home. His dad was a famous actor in Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea and recently passed away.

Sweet Squeak is about a year old, enjoys cuddling with other kitties and is very playful. He has grown up with and gets along with other cats and small dogs.

Cute and cuddly Paws is two years old.

She is an affectionate and playful cat. She gets along with other kitties but will do best as an only cat or someone that can spend time to acclimate her slowly. She is a big, beautiful girl.

Update On Bigfoot Sighting On Storm Mountain We promised readers we would give an update on the bigfoot sighting as reported in the June 14, 2019 edition of the Estes Park News, after the Bigfoot Field Researchs Organization (BRFO) had the chance to come out to verify the sighting by Mike and Leah Marshall on Storm Mountain. BFRO was founded in 1995 and is the only scientific research organization exploring the bigfoot/sasquatch mystery.

To recap, the couple was checking on a friend’s home on May 25th up on Storm Mountain, near Drake. They were out in the yard when Leah heard what she thought were cries from a child in the surrounding woods. The home backs up against national forest property and Leah said, “I could hear what I thought was a little kid crying out, I was afraid that maybe a child had become lost up there, in the thick woods, maybe off the trail. Leah and Mike have often hiked on the trails around the home and know the area quite well. Leah continued, “I followed the sound of the cries up a ravine.

When I got to the top of a steep hill, there was a clearing and I wondered if there was a cave up there. All of a sudden I heard twigs snapping and heard the cries again. I really felt like I was being watched!”

Leah got out her phone and took a couple of photos of the cave, when all of a sudden, she felt disoriented. Leah thinks she experienced a phenomena called infrasound. Bigfoot experts often speak about infrasound, it is a low-frequency

sound wave with frequencies below the lower limit of human audibility. Many who believe they have encountered a sasquatch in close proximity have reported feeling inexplicably nauseous, confused, disoriented, dizzy, light-headed, and even sometimes, physically unable to move.

According to those who have experienced it, infrasound symptoms happen before they have even seen a creature, or have any awareness that it’s in their vicinity. Leah says this is often how people get lost in the woods, the infrasound can provoke unpleasant physical and mind-numbing sensations. Immediately after the infrasound experience, Leah noticed that her phone had gone dead.

She said, “I had 76% power on my phone yet all of a sudden, it was completely drained, just dead!” Leah attrib-

utes the loss of power to her phone from the infrasound. She said her phone has still been “acting up” since then.

Leah and Mike told us that recently Mark Taylor and Jack Weiliend from the Bigfoot Research Organization visited with them to verify their sighting and photos. Mike and Leah took them to the area on Storm Mountain where they saw the squatch.

They recounted their story to them and reviewed the photos which the BFRO experts had already downloaded and studied extensively.

The researchers were anxious to see the spot where Leah had seen at least one of these creatures, up a ravine, that led to a cave in the woods. Leah said, “They did a very thorough investigation, even climbing up and standing on the rock where I saw and heard them. They also

found new footprints and scat in the area where they were investigating. The researchers determined that this was an actual sighting, documenting it as a Class B sighting, and estimated that there were not one but two bigfoot creatures in the photo and that one was 7’6” tall and the other was eight feet tall.

From the BFRO website: Class A-Class A reports involve clear sightings in circumstances where misinterpretation or misidentification of other animals can be ruled out with greater confidence. For example, there are several footprint cases that are very well documented. These are considered Class A reports, because misidentification of common animals can be confidently ruled out, thus the potential for misinterpretation is very low.

Class B-Incidents where a possible sasquatch was observed at a great distance or in poor lighting conditions and incidents in any other circumstance that did not afford a clear view of the subject are considered Class B reports.

For example, credible reports where nothing was seen but distinct and characteristic sounds of sasquatches were heard are always considered Class B reports and never Class A, even in the most compelling "sound-only" cases.

This is because the lack of a visual element raises a much greater potential for a misidentification of the sounds.

Leah and Mike will continue their bigfoot investigations here in the Estes Valley and update with any future sightings.

Estes Park Jazz Big Band To Feature Jazz Vocalists At Final Summer Concert The Cultural Arts Council Presents Bev And The Railroad Ramblers Concert

starting at 7:00 p.m. The free concert will be held at Performance Park, Estes Park’s beautiful outdoor performance facility located on west Elkhorn Avenue. Audience members Ron Ball are encouraged to bring lawn chairs or blankets.

Chuck Varilek will direct the local jazz band which is in its 27th year of providing music for Estes Park residents and visitors.

Featured vocalists on this concert will be: Meghan Tokunaga-Scanlon, Ron Ball and Loren Johnson, all accompanied by the Jazz Big Band.

Tokunaga-Scanlon will be featured soloist on “You’ve Got A Friend In Me” and “As Long As I’m Singing.” Ball will sing “Saturday Night (Is The Loneliest Night Of The Week).” Johnson will be featured on “Wah! Hoo!” The Jazz Big Band will perform several well-known selections including: “This Can’t Be Love,” “Autumn Leaves,” “Who Can I Turn To?” and many other big band hits.

The Estes Park Jazz Big Band is made up of musicians from Estes Park and surrounding communities. After this concert, the band will go on hiatus until their Christmas concert in December.

I started out in bluegrass in the early 1970s in a bluegrass band called Dr. Jackpots Muleskinner Band. We were a banjo, 12 string guitar, fiddle, mandolin, and wash tub bass. We had some damn good times. We were in college at CU Boulder and eventually people gradu-

ated and we grew smaller.

We did play many gigs in Estes including the Stanley and The Gas light Pub. I started out solo when my guitar player got a real job.

A few of us got together to record an album in 1985. I learned that you shouldn't release an LP six months before cd's sweep the industry.

Since the mid 1990s I've played for fundraisers and LGBT conferences and at the High school where I work as substitute teacher. For the last three summers I've been lucky enough to be involved with the Friends of Folk. I did work with Dick Orleans in the early 1980s.

Rex Hedlund, Diane Collinet and Rob Leavitt will accompany me on several original bluegrass songs as well as several original folk songs written by Rex, Rob and me. Rex and Diane are on loan from Sexy Rex and the Potentials. Rob will be on bass and guitar. Rex will play guitar or mandolin.

Come enjoy this wonderful music at the nice open air and acoustically pleasing location of Performance Park. Lawn chairs and blankets are welcome.

Ballet Renaissance Summer 2019

Thanks to generous support from the Estes Valley Community Fund, Ballet Renaissance was able, once again, to provide six weeks of curriculum-focused summer ballet classes to local Boys & Girls Clubs of Larimer County (BGCLC) participants, at no charge to participants.

This summer’s 4th annual program in-

Newly 13 year old Ariana Eastep, who herself was first introduced to Ballet Renaissance during BR’s 2016 Estes Park summer program for BGCLC, and is

now a member of Ballet Renaissance’s special year-round Protégé program, was a particularly generous and accomplished classroom assistant and mentor for this summer’s participants.

July students spent three hours a day in the summer intensive which included: walking across the street from the Elementary School to PCCR with their instructors, changing into dance clothes at the church, taking a ballet class, and enjoying supplemental learning activities focused on sharing famous ballets and introducing ballet history.

Each day of the intensive also included a special snack time, with snacks provided by Ballet Renaissance, all thanks to support from Estes Valley Community Fund and BR’s special partnership with PCCR. The intensive concluded with a reception at PCCR, during which students were able to share their accomplishments, and light refreshments, with family and friends.

Ballet Renaissance’s tuitionfree, curriculum-based summer ballet program has become a fun and traditional part of the BGCLC experience for Estes Park participants, many of whom end up studying with Ballet Renaissance during the academic year. Quite a few of these students have become serious about classical studies and have become members of Protégé, BR’s special program for particularly talented and committed students. 10 boys and 18 girls participated in this year’s first ever Ballet Renaissance summer intensive in Estes Park, setting the stage for future BR summer intensives.

Here in Estes, Ballet Renaissance offers classes to dancers ages three years through adult, in partnership with Center Stage School of Dance and the Presbyterian Community Church of the Rockies. Fall 2019 classes begin in September.

Chad Elliott To Perform At YMCA Of The Rockies On Sunday, August 4, Chad Elliott will be the guest musician for the 10:00 a.m. worship in Hyde Chapel. He will also perform a concert at 7:00pm in Hyde Chapel. The concert is free and open to the public.

Chad Elliott's life has served as fertile ground for music. Elliott has turned love, loss, fatherhood, divorce and homelessness into lyrics. He performs more than 200 shows each year and is lauded as “Iowa’s Renaissance man” by Culture Buzz.

He has cultivated more than 1,000 songs in his career while also honing his skills as painter, sculptor and children's book author/illustrator (Wilderman’s Treetop Tales).

Elliott’s early career demonstrates a love of folk, roots and singer-songwriter music. He has worked with many greats and shared the stage with artists of the highest caliber, including Odetta, Tom Paxton, Loudon Wainwright III, R.L. Burnside, Greg Brown, and Bo Ramsey.

Today, his songwriting has made a marked shift to Americana.

Elliott released his 22nd album, Rest Heavy, which shows his love of rootsrock, soul, and blues music, on August 10, 2018. The self-produced album was recorded at the famed Sun Studio in Memphis, TN by Ples Hampton.

Hampton said, “It was honestly one of the best sessions I've ever had up here. This is gold.”

Greg Brown said of the new album, it’s “low, loose and full of juice.

This album’s got a lot of life to it.” On this album, Elliott performs on acoustic guitar and harmonica, and is joined by his full band, The Redemptions.

What’s Happening At The Estes Valley Library SUMMER READING PROGRAM 2019 Saturday: Final Day for Prizes This Saturday, August 3 is the final day for readers to collect prizes for the Summer Reading Program. This includes readers in all three of the main age categories: kids (ages 4 to 11), teens (ages 12 to 18), and adults.

Rocky Mountain Guitar Camp Free Guitar Concerts Rocky Mountain Guitar Camp is pleased to announce two guitar concerts the Ruesch Auditorium, YMCA of the Rockies, Sunday, August 4 and Wednesday, August 7. Both concerts are free, open to the public, and begin at 7:30 p.m. Donations to support the RMGC Scholarship Fund will be accepted.

The Sunday concert will feature internationally known recording artists John Knowles CGP, Pat Bergeson, Brooks Robertson, Jim Nichols, Brent Mason and Richard Smith. The Wednesday evening concert will include performances by camp participants, artists and eight youth scholarship winners including Parker Hastings, Eli Yacinthe, brothers Payton and Finn Blanchard, Christian Wilson, Jack Treibold, Andrew Shield, and Jack Mauro. Other notables include Dave Hill and Mike Harrington (Ft Collins), Jim Deeming (Berthoud), Bob Kazer (Corona Del Mar CA), Richard Blanchard (Denver), Trevor Hoyt (Durham, NC) and George Schiffman (Laguna Beach CA).

Pat Bergeson earned a Jazz Studies degree at William Paterson University. After playing in New York for 10 years, he moved to Nashville upon the request of Chet Atkins who heard Pat on a demo tape. Chet invited him to play on his album “Sneakin’ Around” with Jerry Reed, and later featured Pat’s guitar and compositions on his 1994 releases “Read My Licks” and “Simpatico” with Chet Atkins and Suzy Bogguss. Chet named Pat as one of his top twelve favorite guitarists in the Oct. 2001 issue of Vintage Guitar magazine.

Brooks Robertson heard Buster B Jones who took him under his wing when 11.

Brooks began playing high-profile gigs such as the Nokie Edwards Festival, the NAMM Show, the Montreal Jazz Festival or the Walnut Valley Festival in Winfield among others. Brooks has played on the National Public Radio classic "A Prairie Home Companion" in 2004, where he won first place in a talent competition for 12 to 20 year old participants. Brooks is a recent graduate of The Berklee College of Music in Boston John Knowles, CGP has worked with renowned fingerstyle and classical guitarists including Chet Atkins, Jerry Reed, Lenny Breau and Tommy Emmanuel. He and Tommy recently released a new CD entitled “Heart Songs.” Knowles works as a composer and arranger and has won many awards including a Grammy and two Emmy nominations. In 1996, Chet Atkins awarded John the first Honorary Certified Guitar Player (CGP) degree and in 2004, John was inducted into the National Thumb Picker’s Hall of Fame for the second time.

Brent Mason is one of the most

recorded guitarists in history. A Grammy Award winning artist he is also a 14 time winner of the Academy of Country Music (ACM) Guitarist of the Year Award, and a 2 time winner of the CMA Award Musician of the Year (being nominated every year since 1991). He was inducted into the Thumbpickers Hall of Fame in 2011. He has been named as one of the top ten session guitarists in the world.

Brent has played on well over a thousand albums and continues to add to this extensive resume.

Jim Nichols credentials include appearances on TV, radio, concert halls, including Carnegie Hall and the Tonight Show. He has played or recorded with Joe Pass, Kenny Rankin, Buddy Montgomery, Art Pepper, Van Morrison, Chet Atkins, Mark Murphy and Hubert Laws. Jim has served as master instructor at many eworkshops and conventions and is a regular instructor with Tommy Emmanuel Guitar Camps. Jim recorded a CD “Chet Lag” with Tommy.

Richard Smith Fellow musicians and music lovers alike sing hymns of praise about world-renowned fingerstyle guitarist Richard Smith. With fretboard fireworks and lyrical endeavors he will melt your heart-strings, make your toes tapping and your jaws hanging open.

Richard's ever growing repertoire comprises a wide variety of music from classical Bach to Beatles pop. It includes Scott Joplin Rags, Sousa marches, Chopin, Mozart and fiddle tunes. Other arrangements include jazz standards to Chet Atkins and Jerry Reed and to Django Reinhardt gypsy swing, not to mention his intriguing originals. Rocky Mountain Guitar Camp is a 501c3 nonprofit educational organization dedicated to the promoting fingerstyle guitar though networking and education. Estes Valley Sunrise Rotary Club Grants Funds to Estes Valley Workforce Housing Assistance Program In May of 2019, Estes Valley Sunrise Rotary Club approved a grant to Estes Park Housing Authority (EPHA). Funds were requested by the Housing Authority, administrator of The Estes Valley Workforce Housing Assistance Program, to provide down payment assistance to individuals and families purchasing homes in the Estes Park R-3 School District.

The program originally began in 2009 and was funded by Colorado Association of Realtors® Housing Opportunity Foundation (CARHOF).

It continues today through the funding provided by the Estes Park Board of Realtors®. The program loans 3.5% of the purchase price up to $10,500 to income qualified home buyers making 81%-150% of Area Median Income (AMI) in Larimer County.

For example, a family of 4 making between $69,761 and $130,800 would potentially qualify for these funds. Funds for this program are provided through the generosity of individual Realtors® contributing a portion of their commission as well as fundraising events offered by the Estes Park Board of Realtors®. Additionally, every payment made by a borrower as well as those loans paid off are returned to replenish this fund. While at one time EPHA was approving approximately one request annually, as of May of this year we had approved three loans in seven months and our fund balance was insufficient to provide the full amount to a new home buyer. As a result, EPHA decided to complete an application for Estes Valley Sunrise Rotary Club’s grant opportunity. We were delighted and honored to learn we had

been approved to receive $2,000.

Those funds allowed us to offer the full amount of $10,500 to a qualified applicant of the program. The funds that Estes Valley Sunrise Rotary Club awarded went to local family who serves this community every day. While the family chooses to remain anonymous, there is still much to share.

The family, a single parent with two children, has worked hard to remain in Estes Park and raise two children.

The children are grown; one is off to college in the valley, the other has attended college, and has returned to serve the community. The head of the household has worked hard in a variety of roles; all of which have been in a capacity of giving back, and moreover to provide support and opportunities for others to succeed.

Following 26 years in Estes Park, this single parent and one of the children, together have purchased their first home in July of this year.

Via’s volunteer driver program launched in late 2015 to address the growing need for transportation among Via’s clients. Since then, our Vital Volunteer program has been delivering costeffective transportation solutions in nearly all of the communities we serve.

In a few short years, our program has grown from five volunteers to a dedicated group of more than 20 amazing individuals who supplement the paid drivers on Via’s staff. The addition of the Vital Volunteer program has enabled us to reduce our denials by filling the gaps that our service can’t provide. In 2018, our volunteers provided 3,835 trips!

Retirement Gift Ignites Passion For Hand Coloring Historic Black & White Photos

Many people just want to kick back and relax once they retire from a full-time job. However, when artist Cheryl Pennington’s partner Kay Cody gave her a gift certificate for a Hand Coloring Black and White Photos class in Steamboat Springs, she had no idea the class would lead to a second career she’s passionate

and track in Niwot and Longmont before retiring. She was also a photographer with a darkroom for 10 years while she taught. “I loved the class that Kay gave me. The hand coloring process helps bring pictures to life and provides me with a niche that is different from most photographers.”

In the beginning she hand colored photos for her own enjoyment and sold some on the side. She did some work for the Fred Clatworthy family, who gave her permission to hand color some of his old photos.

“Fred was a famous historic photographer who took many black and white photos of Rocky Mountain National Park and the Estes Park area from 1900-1940, ” she said. She uses the same oil paints that were invented in 1880 for her work.

In addition to displaying and selling her work at The Old Gallery, she has been involved in hand-coloring photos for numerous books and articles about Colorado. These include Rocky Mountain Conservancy’s book, Rocky Mountain Rustic, Historic Places by William B. Butler and Rocky Mountain National Park: Pictorial History and Estes Park – Beginnings, both by Kenneth Jessen.

Pianist Barry Hannigan and flutist Mary Hannigan will be performing at The Old Gallery in Allenspark on Saturday, August 10 at 4 p.m. This is the 10th year the two have performed a benefit concert for The Old Gallery, a nonprofit center for community, the arts and visitors.

“We are thrilled to be performing at The Old Gallery again,” said Barry Hannigan. “The Old Gallery is a great center for community and the arts in the Peak to Peak area, and we are happy to support their efforts by performing this benefit concert.”

Mary Hannigan is a member of the Harrisburg Symphony and recently retired from the faculty of Dickinson College, where she performed for many years with that college’s faculty wind quintet. She has also taught at Susquehanna University, Bucknell University, Wilkes University and Colorado College. A former faculty member of the Rocky Ridge Music Center in Colorado, she performed for the Music in the Mountains series for many years.

Admission is free, but donations to the non-profit are appreciated. Refreshments will be served. Kathy Bowers is the Community Host for the event.

When they found free service to be more demanding than they expected, 15 local volunteers stepped up to collectively contribute the cost of a year’s service. This occurred in March. After

Clear Intentions (CI), a Colorado company, remanufactures used glass into cullet, which is then used by other companies to make bottles and other glass products. Estes Park produces a lot of used glass! We are lucky to have CI as a Planet Partner.

11th Annual Run Like The Wind 5K Has Something For Everyone

For the past 10 years hundreds of runners have flocked to Allenspark to compete in the Run Like The Wind 5K, one of the most picturesque high-altitude runs in the state. This year, there will be even more to enjoy on Saturday, August 24. There’s a Dog Jog and Dog Show, Walk Like The Breeze 2K, a Pancake breakfast, Ice cream social and more.

It all starts with registration at 7:30 a.m. at The Old Gallery. The race begins at 9 a.m. in front of the Allenspark Post Office. The awards ceremony takes place at 10 a.m.

Runners and walkers and their dogs can register at www.RunLikeTheWind5K.com. All participants will receive a commemorative runner’s cap. Early Bird registration for the 5K is $25 through Aug. 14. Regular online registration between August 18-21 is $30 between August 15-21 and Race Day registration is $35. The 2K Walk is $20, regardless of registration timing. Dog Jog entry is an additional $5, which includes a doggie goodie bag from Estes Park Pet Supply Company.

The Allenspark Area Club is sponsoring their Pancake Breakfast between 8 a. m.-12 p.m. at the Allenspark Fire Station next to The Old Gallery. Adults are $8 and children $5, with proceeds benefitting student scholarships. The Allenspark Fire Department will host a fire extinguisher check and demonstrations from 9 a.m. until noon. The Dog Show is at 10:30 a. m. and the Allenspark Hilltop Guild will be hosting a Cake Walk at The Old Gallery at 11 a. m. In addition, the Allenspark Community Church in downtown Allenspark is hosting an ice cream social from noon until 2 p.m. Ice cream is $1 per scoop.

Packet pickup and race day registration begins at 7:30 a.m. at The Old Gallery located at 14863 Hwy 7. All proceeds benefit The Old Gallery, which is a nonprofit.

At an elevation of 8,504 ft., the 5K takes place on dirt roads that wind through wildflowers and pine forests, boasting views of high mountain peaks.

“Runners come from all over the Front Range and Denver to do this high altitude run,” said The Old Gallery Events and Operations Manager Peggy Mauerman. “It’s a gorgeous course and a great way to enjoy a mountain morning." This is the second year there has been a Dog Jog. “People love to walk and run with their dogs and we wanted to cater to them,” she added.

The awards ceremony takes place from 10-11 a.m. Awards will be given to the top three overall winners (male and female) and to First and Second place runners in each age category (male and female).

Nineteen artists will be displaying their works at The Old Gallery from 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. that day. “The Old Gallery is home to a wide variety of regional and nationally-acclaimed artists, photographers and jewelry designers, ” said Mauerman. “We also have a Rocky Mountain Conservancy Nature Store here. It’s a great center for community, the arts and visitors.”

Allenspark is an unspoiled mountain town with gorgeous views and friendly people, just 20 minutes from Estes Park and 25 minutes from Lyons. Visitors can enjoy shopping at Distant Harbors, a popular boutique and gift store. The famed Meadow Mountain Café and Rock Creek Tavern Pizza Parlor are also in Allenspark.

William Lawrence Conger William Lawrence Conger 82, of Estes Park, CO, died on July 26, 2019 in his home with family by his side.

Bill was born to Harold and Lera (Dixon) Conger in Danville, PA, on June 19, 1937. They moved to Louisville, KY where he graduated from Atherton High School in 1955.

Bill attended the University of Louisville Speed School of Engineering in Louisville, KY, and received his bachelor’s degree in 1960. He then attended the University of Pennsylvania to complete his PhD in 1965.

Bill married his first wife, Carol Ann Seaton, in 1961. He remarried on December 14, 1979 in Lexington, KY, to Caryl Jane Worthington, his wife of 40 years. Caryl and Bill moved to Blacksburg, VA in 1983 and stayed until 2003 when they retired to Estes Park, CO. Bill was a chemical engineer at Esso (now Exxon Mobile), an Associate Professor in Chemical Engineering and Dean of Extension at the University of Kentucky and the Department Head of Chemical Engineering for 18 years at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University. He was a member of the Boy Scouts of America and earned his Eagle Scout on October 13, 1953. Later, the Boy Scouts of America awarded him the Order of the Arrow Vigil, the Silver Beaver, and the District Award of Merit from the Blue Grass Council in Lexington, KY. Bill was Vice-President of the Estes Park Gun and Archery Club and

served as chairperson for the Little Valley Home Owners Road Committee.

He had many hobbies including hiking, canoeing, hunting, fishing, traveling, his dogs, and Disney vacations. Anyone who knew him knew he loved telling stories and knew of his love for Native American art. Bill was honest, ethical and principled in work, family and life. His son often heard him say “It builds character.”

He is survived by his wife Caryl Jane Worthington Conger of Estes Park, CO, son Christopher Lee Conger (Michelle) of Batavia, IL, daughters Catherine Elizabeth Conger Davis (Randy) of Tuscumbia, AL, and Susan Marie Conger Vest (Mark) of Pinetop, AZ, brothers Richard Byron Conger (Maggie) of Chapel Hill, NC, and Stephen Lee Conger (Marie) of Lexington, KY, and grandchildren Hanna Victoria Conger, Jacob Christopher Conger, Samuel Roland Conger, Nicholas John Conger, William Randall Davis, Christopher Clayton Davis, Katherine Grace Davis, Jennalin Marie Vest and Caralea Lorien Vest.

A private family service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers the family suggests donations in Bill’s name be made to the Rocky Mountain Nature Conservancy or the Pet Association of Estes Park in care of Allnutt Funeral Service, 1302 Graves Ave., Estes Park, CO 80517.

Nita M. Stalfort Nita M. Stalfort, 90, passed away on July 26, 2019 in her home at the Estes Park Good Samaritan Village, Estes Park, CO. Nita May Madere was born 12 June 1929 in Hahnville, LA and was raised by her parents E. Hubert Madere and the former Jeanne M. Keller. She taught school briefly after graduating from Southwestern Louisiana Institute, served honorably as an officer in the US Navy, worked as an airline stewardess and later pursued civilian employment with the US Army in Germany where she met and married her husband Charles G. E. Stalfort, Jr. (Chuck).

Nita raised son David and daughter Susan as a devoted Army wife and eventually moved to Orange Park, FL

upon Chuck’s retirement from active duty to build their dream home. During a visit to Estes Park, Nita and Chuck discovered the Village.

In May 2010 they closed their 38 year long adventure in Orange Park, pulled their roots and moved to the Village for the start of a new one. Throughout her life her family, her gardens and plants and her Bridge games gave her contentment.

Nita is survived by her husband, Chuck, son David and his wife Trena, two grandsons Taylor and Connor and daughter Susan. Private commitment services for Nita’s ashes will be in the Estes Valley Memorial Gardens.

Tribute To Chief Jerry Guthrie/ Big Elk Meadows January 29th, 1935 to March 11th, 2019 The morning of March 11th the Big Elk Meadows VFD received a tone that we are never prepared for ... one of our own was down. On the morning of March 11th, 2019 our Retired Fire Chief Jerry Guthrie passed at home, 84 years strong. Born in Tulsa, Oklahoma. He entered into the service of his fellow man, enlisting in the Navy, where he was introduced to aircraft firefighting and was stationed in Guam. When he mustered out of the Navy, he returned to Oklahoma City, OK, where he joined the fire department, and married Gerri Mae (literally the girl next door) in 1956.

Guthrie, an innovator, brought foam into the mix for firefighting that was mounted in the back of a pickup truck so that it could move quickly and get to fires that larger equipment could not. Guthrie oversaw BEVFD’s operations for The Big Elk Fire of 2002. Everyone was evacuated except for the volunteer firefighters, who all stayed. They fought side-byside with the US Forest Service Hot Shots. And with skill and luck, Big Elk Meadows was spared. Unfortunately, three pilots lost their lives fighting that fire (air tanker pilots: Rick Schwartz and Milt Stollak and heli-

During those early years of marriage, Mark was born (1959) and Guthrie decided a safer career was in order. So, he left the fire department and started a TV repair business. Guthrie stayed in that line of work until he “retired,” with his last job with Montgomery Ward where he oversaw services operations for the Rocky Mountain Region, covering six states. That job brought the family from Rapid City, South Dakota to Broomfield, CO. In Broomfield, Guthrie severed the Bal Swam organization and The Optimists. Both of these organizations’ missions were for the benefit of kids, which was always a priority for him.

Through a stroke of luck, a close friend from the Optimists would introduce Jerry and Gerri Mae to Big Elk Meadows, where they moved in 1994.

At that time, the fire station was a shed and two pieces of unreliable equipment. Guthrie stepped back into his firefighter role.

Guthrie would serve as the Chief of the Big Elk VFD for 20 years. Under

After the big fire, and after years of fundraising led by Gerri Mae (with countless donations from businesses in Estes Park), the generosity of Leonard Arnold (a contractor who lived in Big Elk Meadows) and an old fashioned “barn raising” effort by residents … the Guthrie Station at Big Elk Meadows was built.
