Recovery On Mount Lady Washington Last Thursday night, July 15, park rangers recovered the body of a 35-yearold female from Loveland, Colorado, just west of Martha’s Couloir on Mount Lady Washington in Rocky Mountain National Park.

That afternoon, park rangers were notified by a family member that they had received information via a satellite communication device of an emergency.

Rocky Mountain National Park Search and Rescue team members arrived on scene via ground at 4:45 p. m. and were aided with aerial search efforts by Mesa Verde Interagency Helitak crew, assigned

to the Morgan Creek Fire near Steamboat Springs. It appears the woman took an approximate 200-foot tumbling fall.

The woman’s body was flown at approximately 8:15 p.m. via a long line operation to the Upper Beaver Meadows helipad. She was positively identified as Ashley Haarmann, 35. Officer Haarmann had worked for the Boulder Police Department for approximately one and half years.

As is standard protocol the incident is under investigation. Rocky Mountain National Park Search and Rescue Team members stayed at the Chasm Shelter.

On July 15, 2021, at approximately 12:23 p.m., the LCSO Communications Center received an emergency request for law enforcement assistance via radio broadcast from a volunteer firefighter at the Glen Haven Fire Station located at 7320 County Road 43. The broadcast was based on a report to the fire department from a good Samaritan witness.

The witness saw a black Chevy sedan parked in the middle of County Road 43 with a male and female standing outside and behind the vehicle. The witness said it appeared the female was in distress, and she was yelling for help. The witness slowed his vehicle and turned around to provide what aid he could. As the witness approached the female she ran to and entered the witness’s vehicle and he immediately drove to the fire station for help.

While the female and witness were at the fire station seeking help, the male suspect in the black Chevy arrived and intentionally crashed into the witness vehicle. Both the witness and the fire-

fighter saw the male suspect take the female from the witness vehicle and violently physically assault her. The good Samaritan intervened and restrained the suspect until he was detained by an LCSO deputy who was enroute and in the immediate area when the original call was dispatched.

Members of the LCSO Investigations Division, Crime Lab, and Strategic Enforcement Unit organized a response and took over the investigation. The suspect was identified as Jacobo Wright Mendoza, a 40 year old male from Drake, CO. The suspect was transported to Estes Park for medical evaluation and the 16-year old female victim was transported to a hospital in Loveland with serious injuries.

Investigators interviewed both individuals. It was determined that the victim is known to the suspect and based on information that was developed throughout the night, the male suspect was arrested and booked into the Larimer

The charge(s) are merely an accusation and the defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.

On July 16 at 4:21 p.m. police were called to the 1700 block of Big Thompson Ave. on a report of a disturbance. On scene a subject was located by EPPD and taken into custody by members of EPPD and the Larimer County Sheriff ’s Office.

The suspect was charged with felony menacing with a gun at the marina (LCSO jurisdiction).

On July 16 at 9:43 p.m. police arrested a 28 year old male in the 500 block of Fall River Lane and charged him with felony menacing with a knife, unauthorized use

of a financial transaction device, computer crime - access without authorization, theft fraud, and criminal mischief x 2. He was transported to the Larimer County Jail.

On July 18 at 1821, 6:40 p.m. police were called to a disturbance in the 1300 block of Manford Ave. On scene they arrested a 37 year old male from Peoria, AZ and charged him with second-degree assault on a peace officer, obstructing a peace officer, felony theft, harassment and domestic violence.

The vehicle he was driving was reported stolen out of Cheyenne, WY. The male was transported to the Larimer County Jail.

County Jail on the following allegations.

Murder in the First Degree (Attempted), Class 2 Felony Second Degree Kidnapping-Victim Sex Assault, Class 2 Felony Unlawful Sexual Contact by the Use of Force, Class 4 Felony Assault in the Second Degree (Attempted), Class 4 Felony x two counts.

This is a complex and ongoing investigation based on the substantial follow up that is needed.

No further information will be released regarding this investigation until the necessary follow up has been completed.

Anyone with information regarding this incident is asked to call Larimer County Sheriff ’s Office at 970- 416-1985 or Crime Stoppers at 970-221-6868 where you will remain anonymous and possibly be eligible for a cash reward.

Community Partnerships – The Lodges At Black Canyon Inn The Estes Valley Fire Protection District would like to recognize comBlack Canyon Inn, munity member Wayfinding Signage.

Mr. Dennis Pettitt, President of the Lodges at Black Canyon Homeowners’ Association, for his exceptional commitment to improving fire and life-safety in his neighborhood and for those who visit our community.

The Black Canyon Inn complex consisted of multiple buildings which shared a single address number, and this presented a real challenge for first responders should a timely response be needed.

Mr. Pettitt worked directly with the Estes Valley Fire Prevention Division and the Town of Estes Park Community Development Department to successfully correct and improve the addressing for this complex and to meet requirements of the adopted Fire Code. This project included a private street name and sign, installation of wayfinding signage, and correct unit and building identification.

Coincidentally, Estes Valley Fire crews responded to an incident shortly after this project was completed, and we were immediately able to find the building and unit in need due to the good work of Mr. Pettitt.

News From The Chamber The Chamber was hosting an event at a coffee shop when somebody noticed our badges and said, “Whenever I see people with badges on, I see taxes go up.” The Chamber can't take credit for voter-approved tax increases, but we do take pride in supporting the growth of business because the whole community benefits. Actually, local sales taxes have not gone up since 2014, but property values have! (If you are lucky enough to own!)

In fact, the Chamber is not even funded by tax dollars. The charter for the Estes Chamber is different than the chambers that came before us in this town – all of whom did really valuable work for the community. A fundamental premise of our charter is that we are 100% member funded. Most chambers operate on three revenue streams: member dues, events and fundraisers. Our membership has doubled in a year and we're still growing, but we haven't yet reached the number of members we need for financial sustainability, so we have two anchor fundraisers that give us the ability to maintain a staff. So when someone asks, “Who benefits from Chamber fundraisers?” our answer is, “You!” Our operating funds make it possible for the voice of business to make this a great place to work. We work to help business grow and help business owners attract and retain the team members who live and play here. We typically donate 10% of the net funds raised to a featured nonprofit partner because our nonprofits are the lifeblood of the community and a key factor in the livability of this mountain community. These events are successful because of the generosity of sponsors who help us cover the costs. For instance, our big summer fundraiser, The Chamber Cup Golf Tournament, is a huge production between the greens fees, the BBQ, and the beer – all paid for through the generosity

of our sponsors.

Sponsorship comes with benefits beyond the green. Just this week we met with the Estes Park Nonprofit Resource Center (EPNRC) and United Way to talk about the benefits of giving. Financial support of a cause that is important to you constitutes a vote in favor of the change that organization brings to the community. 100 Women Who Care – Estes Park Estes Park is welcoming a new philanthropic organization to town, 100 WOMEN WHO CARE – ESTES PARK. There are many needs that are waiting to be met in this community, but what a blessing that there are so many generous, caring people to address these needs.

On Thursday, August 5th, from 5:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at the Lake Estes Marina pavilion the first meeting of 100 WOMEN WHO CARE will take place and all women of the community and its surroundings are cordially invited to attend.

This is a nationally-recognized organization of women who gather together three or four time a year. At each gathering three members offer a five-minute presentation concerning a local need about which they are particularly passionate.

It’s a time of learning, a time of sharing, and a wonderful time of fellowship. Each member is then asked to make a donation to one of the three organizations that has been featured at the meeting.

There are over 100 nonprofit 501c3 charitable organizations in our small town. Their needs are great. But in the famous words of Mother Teresa, “We ourselves feel that what we are doing is just a drop in the ocean. But the ocean would be less because of that missing drop.”

All women are invited to join to help meet the needs of organizations and the individuals and programs they support in Estes Park and the Estes Valley. All monies raised will stay very close to home and close to the hearts of all involved.

History Hike: Tour the Birch Ruins and Cabin with the Estes Park Museum On Friday, July 23 at 6:00 p.m., join Estes Park Museum staff on a short history hike of the Historic Birch Ruins and Cabin. This one-hour tour will discuss the history of the site, including the fire that destroyed the bungalow and the growth and development of Estes Park.

This program is free and open to the public; good walking shoes and a water bottle are recommended. The tour will begin near the Enos Mills statue in Bond Park. No reservations are required. For information regarding paid parking, please visit: www.estes.org/paidparking.

The tour will explore the story of Denver Post editor and promoter, Albert ‘Al’ Birch, who spent his summers in Estes Park. In 1907, his bungalow caught fire leaving only the stone ruins. After the fire, Birch built a small cabin lower on

the knoll. Today, the Estes Park Museum maintains the cabin and ruins in collaboration with the Town of Estes Park and the Estes Valley Land Trust. The site is listed on the Colorado State Register of Historic Properties. Additionally, the tour will discuss the growth and development of the Town of Estes Park, the Elkhorn Avenue corridor, and the connection to the Stanley Hotel.

Estes Park Health CFO Tim Cashman Retires Tim Cashman, Estes Park Health’s Chief Financial Officer, has decided to retire from Estes Park Health effective July 19, 2021.

He has served as Chief Financial Officer for Estes Park Health for the past four years.

Tim Cashman’s financial leadership has helped Estes Park Health through some challenging events. During the COVID19 crisis, Tim led the successful effort to apply for and receive funding from the Paycheck Protection Plan Loan, the Health and Human Services Stimulus Loan, the Medicare Advanced Payment Program Loan in addition to other funding from the State of Colorado Department of Local Affairs grant, among other grants. Estes Park Health would not have survived the COVID-19 crisis without this financial leadership.

Among his other significant contributions, Tim led the development and construction of the Estes Park Health Urgent Care Center. Tim also

co-sponsored the migration of Estes Park Health’s electronic health and financial information to the new Epic and Lawson platforms, and helped develop a strategic plan and facility master plan for Estes Park Health’s future.

Vern Carda, Estes Park Health CEO, stated, “We all owe a debt of gratitude to Tim Cashman for the financial leadership that enabled Estes Park to survive the COVID-19 financial crisis and many other challenges. I wish Tim well.”

David Batey, Estes Park Health Board Chair, stated, “It has been a privilege to work with Tim Cashman for the last four years. He has made significant contributions to Estes Park Health’s present and future, and I wish him the very best and thank him for his commitment to the Hospital.”

Tim Cashman stated, “Since I began my career, no time has been as daunting as the recent COVID-19 financial crisis.

While Estes Park Health still faces additional financial challenges, I feel I have helped the organization make it through the most difficult period.”

Estes Park EDC Investor Spotlight: Diane Muno The Estes Park Economic Development Corporations is proud to have Diane Muno serve on its Board of Directors. Originally from the Midwest, she worked in healthcare management for 15 years.

During that time, she learned about what it takes to run a business. In 2006, Diane was looking for a transition to the next phase in her career and moved to Estes Park where she purchased The Spruce House. She is also the current owner of The White Orchid and The Christmas Shoppe.

Diane has been a part of the Estes Park Economic Development Corporation since its inception in 2013.

Originally, Diane served as the President of Partners for Commerce (EVPC), an organization created to support businesses and economic diversity, sustainability and longevity.

EVPC established a committee to study the opportunity to launch a community EDC. This evolved into the founding of the Estes Park Economic Development Corporation.

Diane plays an important role in the community, as she advocates for small businesses in her role on the EDC Board of Directors as well as the Estes

Park Health’s Board of Directors. While she is passionate about sustaining the community and business, supporting her employees is her priority. She faces the common challenge of staffing shortages due to affordability and limited workforce housing in Estes Park. She also identifies the shortage of childcare as a concern for hiring employees with families. Because of this, Diane has become involved in community discussions to address these challenges.

She is proud to represent small business and advocate for changes and solutions that would provide businesses with opportunities to succeed. Diane feels that there needs to be a balance between meeting the needs of residents, visitors and businesses; maintaining Estes’ unique small-town feel is just as important as the need for businesses to generate enough sales tax for the community to thrive. Diane hopes to see the community evolve into a year-round economy by way of continued advocacy, economic diversification, business engagement, and support from the community and Town.

EVICS Family Resource Center supports families and children in the Estes Valley in a number of ways, one being our childcare scholarship program. Beginning in 2006, Estes Valley Investment in Childhood Success (EVICS) was established through the Larimer County Early Childhood Council specifically as a scholarship program for the Estes Valley. The scholarship program is intended to support families in our seasonal work environment by providing short term financial assistance. The qualifications for our scholarship program are beyond what the Colorado Childcare Assistance Program (CCAP) in order to more widely support families.

Under the leadership of Nancy Almond, EVICS grew into an organization that supports early childhood through a number of ways. Through parent education, family programs, childcare referrals, and additional connection to resources, EVICS Family Resource Center

was established in 2019. This designation as a Family Resource Center is valuable in order to further grow and expand to fit the needs of our community. As a Family Resource Center, we now have more opportunity to connect you to resources, and connect our organization to the wider FRC resources.

While widening our scope of services, the community’s need for childcare scholarships has continued to grow.

During 2019, EVICS Family Resource Center provided $69,461 in financial assistance to families. This year, we are on track to give even more than last year as we’ve already supported families with over $43,000 in assistance.

Now more than ever, it’s incredibly important that we reach our fundraising goals. While living in Alaska I served on staff at ChangePoint Church for a few years and got to know the facilities manager pretty well.

In addition to taking care of a 50,000 square foot building, he was a wonderful leader who led a group of kids each week that averaged over 300 in attendance. You could tell the young ones loved him and looked forward to coming each week.

His life was making a difference among the Thessalonian people and they began to imitate his way of life. And in time they modeled in front of others how to live an abundant life through the power of the Holy Spirit and it spread to neighboring communities.

Just like a stone thrown into a pond creates a rippling effect with rings extending to the outer edges of the water so was the impact these followers of Christ were making by the way they lived. It’s interesting how a stone enters an exact location within a pond and even though it sink to the bottom its impact touches a circle of influence that touches another and then another. The bigger the splash, the bigger the impact goes.

A question I ask myself periodically is: Who am I imitating and who’s imitating me? Am I living a life worth imitating?

What kind of legacy do I wish to leave behind and am I living in such a way for this to happen?

There’s no better time than the present to reflect upon who we’ve become and who’s following us. Family, friends, and those we may never meet but once are active observers, so let’s commit to live a life worth imitating that will impact the next generation.

Five Fun Facts About… Red-Tailed Hawks By: Dawn Wilson

This week’s featured subject is the red-tailed hawk. This ubiquitous bird — it is the most widespread hawk in the U.S. and in Rocky Mountain National Park — can be found in Estes Valley and the park throughout the year. Look for them perched high on trees searching for prey. Here are five

more fun facts about this bird of prey.

1. Red-tailed hawks mate for life.

2. The range of red-tailed hawks spans most of North America, stretching from northern portions of Alaska to the southern coasts of Mexico.

3. The oldest known wild red-tailed hawk was 30 years old but most live to about 12 years of age.

4. The bulk of a red-tailed hawk’s diet — up to 90 percent — consists of small mammals, like ground squirrels, voles, mice and rabbits.

5. The sound often portrayed in Hollywood movies and television shows of bald eagles — that shrill scream — is actually that of a red-tailed hawk. Bald eagles have a weaker-sounding, almost squeaky cackle and thin squeal.

“IT’S NOT THE YEARS IN YOUR LIFE… IT’S THE LIFE IN YOUR YEARS”

These words of Abraham Lincoln many years ago, are so true, aren’t they? We’ve all known people that didn’t live too long, but their lives were well lived. They enjoyed each day, relishing every moment with family and friends and others with whom they were blessed to interact. This story from an unknown source shows a life filled with contentment and fulfillment.

It seems that an American businessman was on the pier of a small coastal Mexican village when a small boat with just one fisherman docked. Inside the small boat were several large yellow fin tuna. The American complimented the Mexican fisherman on the size and quality of his fish and asked him how long it took to catch them. The fisherman replied, ‘Only a little while.’ The American then asked why he didn’t stay out longer and catch more fish. The fisherman said he had enough to support his family’s immediate needs. The visitor then asked, ‘But what do you do with the rest of your time? With a broad smile on his face the fisherman replied, “I sleep late, fish a little, play with my children, take a siesta with my wife, Maria, stroll into the village each evening where I sip wine and play my guitar with my amigos.

I have a full and busy life!”

The American scoffed, “I’m a Harvard graduate with an MBA and I could help you.

You should spend more time fishing and with the proceeds buy a bigger boat. With the proceeds from the bigger boat you could buy several more boats, until you have a fleet of fishing boats. Instead of selling your catch to a middleman you would sell directly to the processor, eventually opening your own cannery. You could control the product, the processing and the distribution. You would probably want to leave this small fishing village and move to Mexico City, and from there to Los Angeles and eventually to New York City where you would run your expanding business.”

The Mexican fisherman listened intently to all he said, then asked, “And how long would this take?” The American thought for a moment and then replied, “Fifteen to twenty years, I would guess.” “But what then?” the fisherman asked. The American laughed and said, “That’s the most exciting part. When the time is right you would announce an IPO and sell your company stock to the public and become very rich. You would make millions.” “Millions?

Then what?” the native fisherman asked. With a broad smile, the visitor said, almost triumphantly, “Then you could retire. You could move to a small coastal fishing village where you could sleep late, fish a little, play with your children, take a siesta with your wife, and stroll into the village in the evening where you could sip wine and play your guitar with your amigos!”

We can easily guess the ‘rest of the story’, can’t we? The wise fisherman would simply shake his head, amused that this foreigner just doesn’t get it. He’s already got that.

Why go to all that trouble, only to finally achieve what he already enjoys every day?

There are many people who think much like the visiting ‘wise man’! They give up many of the simple pleasures and things of a good life in order to embark on a life of pursuing things that will eventually bring them right back where they started. Remember, “It’s not the years in your life, it’s the life in your years!”

What I appreciate about living where we do is that we have so many pleasant, ongoing experiences that make it easy for us to find the contentment and joy of the native fisherman. We see people jogging around the lake, enjoying the wonder of the abundant wildlife, enjoying the Park and the people. How often do we stop to ponder that many people, working so diligently in the ‘tradition’ of the American visitor, drive hundreds, even thousands of miles to come and enjoy those things that we enjoy every day? May we, like the fisherman, appreciate and treasure what we have. The Bible says: “Be content with such things as you have.”

YMCA Dedicates Outdoor Classroom

On the afternoon of July 13, 2021, guests, staff and generous donors attended the dedication ceremony for the new outdoor classroom located at the Mootz Family Craft and Design Center at the Estes Park Center – YMCA of the Rockies. The outdoor classroom will welcome children, families, and groups who will utilize this space for free-play.

Natural materials are the focus of the

playground with stations including water tables, fort building with sticks, natural building blocks, musical instruments, and much more for creative play.

YMCA of the Rockies will also utilize the space for hosting a variety of family programs including the Little Explorers class which focuses on preschool-age fun and nature education.

Residents and summer visitors are invited to join the Estes Park tennis community. We play at the courts in Stanley Park, near the high school.

Summer Dog Training Classes Summer is here, with a vengeance! Our COVID puppies training seems to have gone out of the window!

If you are looking for a positive program to enroll your puppy or adult dog in, Wags Mountain Training Camp is offering a basic, five-week obedience course beginning Monday, July 26 at 5 p.m. for any dog or puppy of any age.

Training classes will be held at Elena’s Barking Lot (formerly known as Linda’s Pet Care Services) at 950 Comanche Street, Unit C. The course includes all basic commands including sit, down, settle, off, stand, watch me, leave it and stay as well

as recalling, loose leash walking and learning to how to be appropriate with other people and pets while on leash.

There are also weekly handouts, articles from positive reinforcement trainers and weekly Q & A to discuss ongoing dog behaviors (wanted and unwanted). This class emphasizes teaching owners how to relate to their pets in a more positive and loving way while shaping positive, wanted behavior. More importantly, it teaches us, the humans, to have reasonable expectations and gives logical answers to why some things work better than others with our dogs.

The course will focus on positive reinforcement training with food rewards and playtime for an all around good time for the owner as well as the dog.

As you embrace the start of a more “normal” summer, it’s important to give yourself room to continue to reemerge at your own pace. It’s also important to remember that new beginnings are not always easy or obvious. I’m reminded of the following story, a valuable metaphor for embracing adversity and new beginnings: A man found the cocoon of a butterfly. A small opening appeared. The man sat and watched the butterfly for several hours as it struggled to force its body through the little hole. Then it seemed to stop making any progress. It appeared as if it had gotten as far as it could and could go no farther.

The man decided to help, so he took a pair of scissors and snipped off the remaining bit of cocoon. The butterfly then emerged easily. But it had a swollen body and shriveled wings.

The man continued to watch the butterfly because he expected that at any moment the wings would expand and the body would contract to the proper proportion.

Neither happened! In fact, the butterfly spent the rest of its life crawling around. It never was able to fly.

In his kindness and haste, the man had not understood something. A restricting cocoon and the struggle for the butterfly to get through the tiny opening were nature's way of forcing fluid from the body of the butterfly into its wings so that it would be ready for flight once it achieved its freedom.

Sometimes struggles are exactly what we need to become stronger in character and determination. If nature allowed us to go through life without any obstacles, we would not learn how to be resilient and powerful. We might never fly!

Microwaves can not be accepted at Estes Recycles Day on Aug 7, but almost anything else made of metal can be.

Metal is an eternally recyclable resource, but, as with most raw materials derived from the Earth, the original supply is limited and cannot be easily expanded.

We have no control over that. What we can do: By diverting metal resources away from burial in the landfill, we can make certain these valuable resources are not wasted.

Before Estes Recycles Day, it is advisable to offer to the local thrift shops all your unwanted electrical appliances and electronics that are still in reliable working order and could be profitably used by someone else. At Estes Recycles Day – if a discarded product is electronic it must go to the Ecycling Station. If it is an electrical appliance made of metal, it must go to scrap metal. And the difference? An electrical circuit simply converts electricity into other forms of energy (light, heat, sound) but an electronic circuit, often through a series of if-then directions, controls the flow of electrons to perform a task, independent of the operator. So, in simple terms, an electrical appliance has no decision making capability, whereas an electronic circuit processes information to determine a path to completing the task. The car should be loaded with electronics, then scrap metal, then shredding – so that the shredding is unloaded first once you arrive at the Event Center Parking lot and enter from Manford Avenue. To process cars quickly, drivers and passengers remain in the vehicle while volunteers unload at the shredding and electronic stations.

The scrap metal station will accept, and recycle, all non-electronic products that are 51% or more made from metal, from nails to toasters and vacuums.

Large electric appliances (like dishwashers) are not accepted at Estes Recycles Day because they take too much time and too much room on the truck. Each vehicle must supply the unloading crew for the items in their vehicle. This collection goes to Colorado Iron and Metal in Fort Collins who consider microwaves to be electronic.

There are no fees for recycling scrap metal. If, for any reason, you miss this collection there are metal recyclers (year round) in Boulder, Loveland, Greeley, and Fort Collins and they buy recyclable metal, including washers and dryers, dish washers, large air conditioners, and refrigerators – if you can get them there.

The income isn’t a lot, but last week, a couple lawnmower decks and some broken lawn chairs brought us $42: more than the gasoline, but less than the IRS mileage deduction.

The Shredding Station accepts paper to be shredded (3 box maximum). It does not accept pre-shredded paper. The recommended donation of $10/box goes entirely to college scholarships for local high school students next May. For a smooth trip through the Estes Recycles Day site, the paper to be shredded must be loaded last, to be unloaded first. Preshredded paper, in order to be redirected from the landfill, must be taken down the mountain to one of the recycling centers in the Front Range area.

Retired Sheriff Shares His Passion For Wood Lathe Art At The Old Gallery George Epp has had a “thing” for using a wood lathe ever since junior high shop class. Even during his 30-year law enforcement career, he continue to dabble, making furniture and other functional items for his home. It wasn’t until he retired as a Boulder County Sheriff that he started to perfect his craft, which can now be found at The Old Gallery in Allenspark.

“I never saw myself as an artist,” said Epp. “I knew I wanted to do woodturning on the lathe, but I didn’t really see

myself making things that were beautiful. I thought I’d make things that were useful. I didn’t see the artist thing coming.” Seeing that The Old Gallery can hardly keep his handcrafted work in stock, it’s no surprise he’s considered a popular artist.

Epp creates stunning one-of-a-kind vessels, coffee tables, console tables and even custom pieces for clients, including cremation urns. He uses Colorado’s “beetle kill” lodgepole pine trees that have the distinctive blue-black discoloration in the wood in his art.

“The fungus carried by the beetles that attack lodgepole pines makes beautiful patterns in the wood,” he said. He also uses turquoise, coral and shell to fill in the natural cracks and anomalies in the wood. His finishes are food safe and any bowls can be safely hand washed.

Epp has lived in Boulder County since 1951. He currently resides in Niwot and his work has been featured in many galleries. “But this is my best gallery experience so far. It’s close to home and they sell everything I can make. It’s almost too good!,” he said.

Epp says he “loses” himself for hours while he creates pieces on his lathe. “And

every time I finish a piece and look at it, it gives me a spark of joy. That’s the most rewarding thing about what I do,” he said.

When asked if he had any advice for aspiring artists, he replied, “I think I’m an aspiring artist myself!” He added.

“One of the lessons I’ve learned about the kind of work I do is that it takes a lot of time to become proficient at the mechanics of doing the woodwork. I read that you need to do 10,000 hours of it until you’re good at it. And I’m still learning.”

Leon (Lonny) Charles Martin Leon (Lonny) Charles Martin of Estes Park, CO, died on July 18, 2021.

Lonny was born November 16, 1954 to parents Raymond and Marcelene (Fruit) Martin in Ogallala, NE. He graduated from Ogallala High School in the class of 1973. On July 5, 1976 Lonny married his true love Angie Tillman in Ogallala.

They lived in Nebraska for the next 20 years and he owned the Shoe Mart.

Lonny and Angie welcomed their daughter Amanda to their family in 1989 and in 1999 they moved to Estes Park, CO and he purchased the Estes Park 5&10 with his wife. Lonny has also been employed with the Harmony Foundation for the last 18 years.

Lonny enjoyed hunting with his brother and nephews, trapshooting, sailing and golfing. He was a lifelong avid fan of the Denver Broncos and always looked forward to his annual trip to a Wyoming Cowboys Football game with is daughter Amanda. But most of all Lonny loved his wife Angie and spending time with family.
