Town Of Estes Park Recognized For Excellent Financial Accounting And Reporting The Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting has been awarded to the Town of Estes Park for the 34th time by the non-profit Government Finance Officers Association of the United States and Canada (GFOA) for its 2019 Comprehensive Annual Financial Report (financial report). The Certificate of Achievement is the highest form of recognition in the area of governmental accounting and financial reporting, and its attainment represents a significant accomplishment by a government and its management.

The Town’s financial report was judged by an impartial panel to meet the high standards of the GFOA Certificate of Achievement program, which includes demonstrating a constructive “spirit of full disclosure” to clearly communicate its financial story and motivate potential users and user groups to read the report.

Finance Director Hudson commented, “Our Finance Department staff strive to present comprehensive, transparent financial information to the public, and we’re pleased to be recognized by our peers.”

The financial report contains narratives, commentary, and financial data on the Town’s financial condition, including its operating budget, net position, investments, long-term debt, and statistical tables.

Parking Pilot Wayfinding Signage Installation Begins Monday, May 10

E3 Signs, the Town’s contractor on the Parking Pilot Wayfinding project, will commence work on Monday, May 10, weather permitting. Work may occur between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m., Monday through Friday (holidays excepted).

Next week’s work will include mobilization and preparing Phase 1 locations for installation, including excavation for sign posts. Traffic control for roadways and sidewalks will be in place when work will encroach into these areas.

Weather permitting, Phase 1 sign installation is anticipated to be complete by May 21.

This project will install directional and destination signs at 29 locations in and near downtown. Additionally, new street name signs will be installed at the three downtown signalized intersections.

Work will be completed in two phases in order to potentially utilize grant funding for a portion of the work.

Phase One will consist of installing destination signs at the driveway entrances of 11 public parking lots. Destination signs will help draw a driver’s attention to the public parking lot entrances and provide important information using text and symbols: free or paid parking; availability of shuttle bus service at or near the lot; the availability of other amenities at or near the lot (e.g., accessible parking, restrooms, RV parking, mo-

torcycle parking, EV charging); and the lot name. Signs will also include an animal icon to help drivers better remember their parking location.

Phase Two will consist of installing directional signage along Town and CDOT roads in advance of available public parking lots. Directional signs will use simplified, easy to understand messaging using text and international symbols to point drivers towards public parking options. Phase 2 will also include installation of the new street name signs on all mastarms at the three downtown signalized intersections.

Removal of existing faded, mismatched and inconsistent parking signage will be removed as the new signage is installed.

Estes Park Museum Gallery To Reopen May 19 The Estes Park Museum gallery is scheduled to reopen on Wednesday, May 19, after being closed since March 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The museum will resume regular operating hours of Wednesday – Saturday, 10:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. State and county guidelines will be followed, including limiting visitors to ten at a time, encouraging social distancing, following appropriate cleaning and sanitizing schedules, and requiring face coverings. A special welcome back gift will be given to visitors throughout the first week of the gallery reopening while supplies last. Plan a visit today!

During the gallery closure, updates were made to the museum’s permanent exhibit, such as additional interpretation, technology changes, and the acquisition of a 100-year-old fire cart used by the Estes Valley Volunteer Fire Department (now known as the Estes Valley Fire Protection District).

Additionally, guests will be able to visit the other buildings on the property including the Cobb-Macdonald Cabin and the Historic Boyd Building, which houses the temporary exhibit, Now We Are Very Modern: Estes Park during the 1920s. This exhibit explores the growth, changes, and challenges that Estes Park faced during the tumultuous 1920s.

Staff greatly appreciates all of the volunteers who make it possible to resume operations.

Additional funding for this project was made possible by the Town of Estes Park, The Estes Park Museum Friends & Foundation, Inc., and the Estes Valley Library Friends & Foundation Plan future exhibits Prepare the Museum Annex to designate separate collections storage areas and prepare for a public use research area in 2021 Administer a public survey to capture the local experience of COVID-19 (participate in the survey at estes.org/museum) Continue reference services via telephone and email communication The Estes Park Museum initiated virtual programming in August 2020 and will continue to offer public programs virtually at this time. Stay up-to-date with Museum programs and happenings on the Estes Park Museum’s website.

Many programs comprising of oral history recordings, the 1917 Book Club, and Estes Park Then & Now presentations were recorded and can be accessed via the museum’s YouTube channel.

On May 9 at 6:50 p.m. police contacted a 32 year old female driver from Estes Park in the 600 block of Moccasin Circle. On

scene she was arrested and transported to Larimer County Jail and charged with DUI, DUI per se, reckless driving, child abuse times four, leaving the scene of an accident (hit & run), and no proof of insurance.

Save The Date: Estes Recycles Day Returns - At A New Location Saturday August 7, 9 a.m. to Noon at the Events Complex Main Parking Lot After the success of the 2020 mini drive-through event, the full Estes Recycles Day will be back on Saturday, August 7, 2021 from 9 to noon, this year in a new location - the main parking area of the Events Complex (Rooftop Way). Access to the event will be via Manford Avenue only.

Volunteers from the League of Women Voters Community Recycling Committee and the Rotary Club will be on hand

to assist you at four stations: shredding, paint, scrap metal and electronics. We will again emphasize drive-through stations wherever possible.

Grants Are A Big Bonus For Estes Park Although Estes Park is a small town, its success in getting grants from state and federal sources exceeds that of much larger towns and cities in Colorado. A success that helps the Town avoid budget shortfalls, meet infrastructure needs, and address emergencies-such as floods, wildfires and COVID19--that local tax dollars cannot cover.

The Town’s grant-getting efforts begin and end with grant specialist Christy Crosser. First, Christy meets with project managers and finance department staff of the Town to identify unmet or

Back To Business Connecting The Business Community Again In May The Estes Chamber of Commerce, “the new chamber,” was founded in 2019 and fully launched in 2020, just before the pandemic. Now that the governor has retired the dial and Larimer County has created greater capacity for group events, the Chamber is returning to the job of connecting the business community with a series of safe events in May celebrating our return to business and our second birthday.

Golden-winged warbler.

Rare Birds In Colorado Spring is really popping at Lake Estes this week and we added two new species to the Lake Estes Bird Finders List. Bird expert Scott Rashid sent us these great photos of a Golden-winged warbler and a Lesser Nighthawk.

Scott said, “The Golden-winged warbler nests in the midwest, Minnesota,

Wisconsin and further east. It is the first sighting recorded at the lake and we have been keeping track since the early 1990s. The second is a Lesser Nighthawk which are primarily found from central California to southwest Texas, both birds are considered rare anywhere in Colorado.”

Get Involved! Public Input Requested On Long-Range Day Use Visitor Access Strategy In Rocky Mountain National Park Rocky Mountain National Park staff are seeking the public’s engagement and input on the park’s long-range Day Use Visitor Access Strategy. “We are eager to continue engaging with our stakeholders and connect with park visitors from near and far, to help identify shared values, clarify key issues, and begin to develop potential management strategies to help the park prepare for our long-term day use strategy” said Park Superintendent, Darla Sidles. “We hope to hear from current park visitors as well as those who have told us they no longer visit Rocky Mountain National Park because of crowding and congestion. ” Public comments are invited for sixty days beginning May 21 through July 19, 2021.

Rocky Mountain National Park has experienced a 44 percent increase in visitation since 2012. Rapid growth in day use visitation and changing use patterns in the park have degraded natural and cultural resources, diminished quality of the visitor experience, increased visitor and staff safety concerns, and created a

heavy strain on the park’s facilities and ability to perform daily operations. The purpose of the Rocky Mountain National Park Day Use Visitor Access Strategy is to provide visitor access in a way that enhances the protection of the fundamental resources and values for which the park was created. The goal of the process is to identify strategies that will help protect park resources, offer varied opportunities for high quality visitor experiences, enhance visitor and staff safety, and coincide with the park's operational capacity.

The park is hosting two virtual public meetings regarding this strategy on Thursday, May 20, from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. and on Tuesday May 25, from 2:00 p.m.. to 3:30 p.m. The content is the same for both meetings, so participants only need to attend one. The intent of the webinars is to provide opportunities for the public to learn more about the purpose of the project, key is-

sues, desired conditions for day use visitor access, potential management strategies, ask questions of NPS staff and get information on how to provide formal written comments through the Planning, Environment and Public Comment (PEPC) website. Each webinar will begin with a presentation, followed by a question and answer session.

Who knew? After last week’s column about Velveeta was published, I quickly discovered that lots of Thunker readers are passionate about the distinctive brick of bright orange non-cheese cheese. We either love Velveeta or we hate it, but most often we love it.

Oh, there are the honest, healthy eaters like Joan S., who said of the pasteurized prepared cheese product, “Yuck! Use some grown-up, real cheese and then you can tell me how truly good the food [you eat] is. ” And then there’s the rare bird like Ed G., who said, “Sarah, have I been on the wrong planet? I’ve never even heard of Valveeta [his spelling]. ” Ed believes his kind wife, Marge, shielded him from the foreign fare of fake cheese. She did a good job since Velveeta has never crossed paths with Ed’s stomach. Either that or Marge put it in cheesy dishes without revealing that it wasn’t cheddar or colby Ed was eating.

The block of jiggly cheese-like stuff is known across the globe, thanks to folks like Susan A. She said, “We shipped Velveeta to China in 1982. It lasted forever and was a very welcome snack.

[Preservatives are important to the overall Velveeta experience. ] Also, I made flour tortillas and added ‘cheese' at the end of cooking. ” Chinese. Mexican. See? It’s a global favorite.

Janis P. made me feel better about my willingness to indulge in a little imitation cheese every once in awhile. He said, “I really enjoyed the column about Velveeta, and who says you can't live a little! That being said, where's the dip you make with melted Velveeta? I'm wanting some now.

Mac and cheese sounds kind of good, and melted Velveeta in tomato soup too. ” “Better go buy yourself a couple boxes of Velveeta,” I replied.

“It would probably be around longer than me!” he said. [Proof positive: I’ve never seen a block of Velveeta turn green and fuzzy. Hard and crusty, when the package didn’t get sealed up tight before it went into the fridge, but never moldy.]

Ann B. admitted her cheesy transgressions: “I’m at the confessional: I didn’t make many sandwiches for the kids but I made everything with or in a wonderful cheese sauce made always with part of a block of ‘V.’ Block after block after block...

Then not that many years ago I learned it wasn’t really cheese. On top of that we would have treats at Dairy Queen... that’s not ice cream!! It’s a wonder my kids are alive!!!!!!! [Ann has served up a fair bit of

“alternate foods”—and her fair share of exclamation points too. ] Ann wasn’t the only one to admit her fall from grace. Mark K. shared his secret: “My ‘hidden item’ at Safeway is Pork Rinds! (Don't judge me!)

See, the thing is, Mel uses them as a Ketofriendly substitute for bread crumbs for chicken coating. We’re having it tonight in fact and it’s amazing! ‘Course the fact that I feel the need to explain the purchase says it all, yeah? Lol!” [Mark doesn’t need to explain anything. We understand all too well.]

Kathy H. too, felt compelled to confess.

“You brought back memories of all those not-so-good-for-you but oh-so-tasty foods. The item I have to apologize for in the check-out line is Kraft macaroni and cheese. At 31 cents a box in the 1980s and ’90s, it was my go-to when I needed to make a quick and easy lunch for our three kids. I would often mix in tuna fish, a can of mushrooms, and a dollop of sour cream. And they would eat it! I don’t know if any of them still do, but I made it last month when staying in an Airbnb with a friend – and she liked it, too.”

[Gourmet Kraft mac and cheese! I think I’ll try this, except I’ll use Velveeta in place of the neon orange powder Kraft claims is cheese.]

Speaking of gourmet, James W. admitted to his use of American cheese, which is right next to Velveeta on the fake foodo-meter. “I do take pride in my homemade mac and cheese with chunks of ham, and have mastered the toasted cheese sandwich, or as my kids used to call it, the ‘girl cheese samich.’ American cheese slices, dill pickle slices, mayo on the outside (instead of butter), sometimes a slice of deli beef on the cheese.

“Thanks for the column,” he continued.

“It brought back great memories of marshmallow salads and Velveeta smeared on Ritz crackers. (My own sin, the thing I ask cashiers at Kings not to mention, are the little cans of Vienna sausages.)” [Atta boy, James. I wonder if he’s tried pouring some melted Velveeta over those Vienna sausages. Hmmm…]

“Coolest Car Show” Is Back This Year!

The Estes Park Museum Friends & Foundation, Inc. are looking forward to beginning the activities that we love doing! And that means our favorite FUNdraiser, the annual Coolest Car Show in Colorado to be held on Sunday, July 4, 2021 inside at the Events Complex in Estes Park, from 10:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m.

We are limiting the Coolest Car Show to the first 60 registered vehicles, to comply with current social distancing spacing. Please contact us and let us know if you plan to bring one of those 60 cars. We will have a special goodie bag for the first 25 car registrations and a chance at some great door prizes!

It is going to be a different show this year. We are working with Larimer County for approval and the final determination from the county will guide our event.

The Estes Park Museum Friends will

not be charging admission for spectators, but will be accepting donations from our guests.

Be Wildfire Prepared

May is Wildfire Awareness Month. After the Colorado wildfires of 2020, the need to be wildfire prepared is clear for residents of the Estes Valley. The Cameron Peak fire seemed to fill our valley with smoke for weeks and made a run into our neighbors in Glen Haven back yards, with some losing homes and structures. Flames could be seen at night on the crest of the hills to the north and the danger felt very real. Then, with the explosion of the East Troublesome Fire, growing from 18,000 acres to 87,000 acres in 24 hours and jumping the Continental Divide, came the evacuation of the Town of Estes. No one was left untouched by these events.

Knowing that many homes and structures in The Retreat were saved by the preparations owners had taken long before the fire began, amplifies the importance of mitigating private property. To help the community be prepared the Estes Valley Board of REALTORS®, Estes Chamber and Estes Valley Fire Protection District are partnering to help edu-

cate homeowners with two upcoming events.

On Friday, May 21st there will be an online event, from 12:00 – 1:00 p.m., where you will hear from local residents, fire industry experts, forest and insurance professionals, and view a presentation from Estes Park Middle Schoolers. Pre-registration is required, and may be done through the Estes Chamber at: esteschamberco.chambermaster.com/ eventregistration/register/4311 The second event will be held Saturday, May 22nd, from 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m., at Bond Park, and includes a Walk & Talk with Summit Forestry. Information will be available from Estes Valley Fire Protection District, Colorado Project Wildfire, and the Boulder County Sort Yard to help residents plan for property mitigation.

Come out to learn how your actions can protect your home, your neighbors, and the beautiful forests that surround Estes Park. Both events are free, and all ages are welcome!

Combining “Bike To Work Day” and The “Costume Bike Parade” Into One Day Of Biking Fun June 23 Bike Estes Day- a fun filled day of celebrating all things cycling. Come join the fun with the annual “Bike to Work Day” in the morning and the “Costume Bike Parade” in the evening to form a full day celebrating bicycles and community fun.

Bike to Work Day is a national event that Colorado usually celebrates annually in June. To make a complete day of cycling fun, the annual Costume Bike Parade will make for a fun family friendly evening.

Bike to Work Day-Start your day on Wednesday, June 23 by joining the community for Bike to Work Day at the town’s Visitor Center from 6 a.m. to 9 a.m. Coffee and breakfast snacks are just a few of the treats that will be provided.

There will also be activities for the kids, a bike maintenance stand, and information booths. So please stop by to show your support of biking and enjoy the festivities. All are welcome regardless of your mode of transportation!

Costume Bike Parade-The Costume Bike Parade is a unique, fun filled opportunity for the whole family to dress up in fun costumes, decorate your bike

and join your neighbors and community for a leisurely bike ride through downtown from Performance Park to the Visitors Center. Police will escort the riders, and at the end of the parade, there will be additional festivities.

The fun starts at 5:30 p.m. at the Performance Park parking lot, where there will be materials on hand for you to decorate your bike. At 6:00 p.m., the bike parade starts, with a police escort stopping traffic at all of the intersections.

The parade ends at the Town Visitor Center where a Bike Rodeo is planned and additional fun family games and snacks. Don’t forget to wear a costume!

Prizes will be handed out for fun creative costumes.

An added component to this year’s event will be information and give-aways for “Safe Routes to School” supported with CDOT grant funds for the Town’s Graves Avenue Project.

When The Smoke Cleared... We Were On The Podium Again!

Estes Park Middle School (EPMS) students competed in the RISE Challenge Colorado last week on May 6th. This annual event is sponsored by Earth Force and has students compete against other schools to creatively design a project that would help solve a local natural hazard.

EPMS took 2nd and 3rd place in the competition, falling just short of Hotchkiss

High School who took 1st place. The top three schools all presented projects on wildfires. For the 4th year in a row, EPMS students’ hard work and creativity shined through!

The 6th grade team took 2nd place this year. The 6th grade students who volunteered their time and effort on this project include: Abi Watry, Eva Carosello, Leo Balduzzi, Gabe Oberg, Jennifer Trofimova Rodriguez, Daisy Guadarrama, Ben Bryant, Brooklyn Florence, Colby O’Brian, and Olivia Boynton. After much preliminary brainstorming and planning, this group came up with not one but three ideas. The first and most ambitious idea was to hold a school-wide contest that would encourage students to either do “Firewise” mitigation at home or to prepare a “to go” emergency evacuation kit that would include important information and essential items. The second idea was to send information to homeowners associations so that they could promote fire safety in their newsletters. The third idea was to write to the town planning commission and public works department about landscaping policies and possible signage on roads to public lands where there is only one entrance and exit. Several local merchants saw the wisdom in these preparations and contributed prizes for the contest.

Donors include Rapid Transit Rafting,

Open Air Adventure Park, Mustang Mountain Coaster, Estes Park Mountain Shop, Peak Hallmark, Ace Hardware, E.P. Lumber, Park Supply, the Sugar Shack and the YMCA. Students who joined the contest were eligible for daily drawings for prizes and those who submitted evidence of their project were in the running for our top level prizes.

The 8th grade team took 3rd place this year. This was the first year an 8th grade team from EPMS participated in the event. This team came up with the idea of joining local events this summer and fall to teach wildfire safety and evacuation preparation to residents and visitors. This team recognizes the importance of education and outreach in wildfire preparedness.

Overall, the project helped students see the importance of preparation and mitigation for wildfires. They learned from experts in the field, town employees, insurance and real estate agents, and our local fire department. Among the challenging statistics from the past few years, students were able to see the trend of larger fires creating greater devastation to our forestlands across the west. They learned that wildfires have long been a part of the natural process, but due to the conditions of our forests and human ignited fires, we are seeing a greater threat to those of us who live in the Wildland Urban Interface (W. U.I.).

Colorado Parks & Wildlife Reminds Us That Spring Is The Season To Be Bear Aware Learn how to do your part to help keep our wildlife wild.

Colorado Parks and Wildlife reminds outdoor recreationists, city dwellers and rural homeowners that early spring is the time to become Bear Aware.

As bears emerge from hibernation, all Coloradans need to be responsible and take steps to minimize humanbear interactions.

It’s important to think ahead and be Bear Aware now when preparing your home, neighborhood and outdoor plans with the change in seasons. Bears are omnivores and primarily eat vegetation such as grasses, forbs, berries, acorns, and seeds, which are usually available as bears emerge from hibernation.

Human-bear interactions tend to increase in the summer months, however, when a late frost or warm, dry weather can lead to localized natural food failures. This can cause black bears from affected areas to become more mobile and persistent in search of human food sources like trash, fruit trees, pet food, bird feeders, livestock and agricultural products. Bears have an extremely keen sense of smell and excellent memories, and once they have learned about a reliable source of food, they will often return.

“It's critical for folks to remember that if a bear finds a meal in or around your home and becomes unafraid of people, it is more likely that a human-bear interaction can occur,” said Mark Lamb, Area Wildlife Manager for CPW. “Careless behavior by people, whether leaving your trash out, keeping a dirty campsite or, worst of all, purposely feeding a bear, is most often what leads to these interactions. Unfortunately, our wildlife managers are then tasked to remedy many avoidable problems.”

Five Fun Facts About… The Yellow-Headed Blackbird By: Dawn Wilson

This week’s featured animal is the yellow-headed blackbird. A couple of weeks ago I featured the red-winged blackbird. The yellow-headed blackbird is a cousin of the red-winged in the family Emberizidae. This exclusively American family is made up of 95 species, including meadowlarks, grackles, and cowbirds. Here are some more fun facts.

1. Yellow-headed blackbirds are a

migratory bird to Estes Valley, spending their winters in Mexico and the deep southwestern U. S. and their summers in marshes and wetlands throughout the western U. S. and Canada.

2. These stunning birds, with a head capped in bright golden yellow feathers, also have a distinct call. It is described as a strange mixture of honking, gurgling, and strangling noises or sounding like a rusty gate opening. It is unmistakable once you get to know it.

3. Blackbirds form large groups in winter, with some flocks estimated to be in the millions and made up of a mix of different blackbird species as well as similar birds, like European starlings.

The birds move along in a rolling or leap-frog pattern with the back birds “leaping” over the front birds.

4. Yellow-headed blackbirds are larger and dominant to the red-winged blackbirds. Although they nest in the same habitat, the yellow-headed will displace the red-winged blackbird from the best

nesting sites.

5. Yellow-headed blackbirds always build their nests over water, creating a unique challenge for the wayward nestling that may fall out of the nest.

Although there are not many yellowheaded blackbirds nesting in Estes Valley, they do migrate through each spring on their way into North Park where they are abundant in the marshes and wetlands.

GROWING OLD GRACEFULLY

Like it or not, all of us are growing older…aging. Many joke about it, but deep down inside, growing old is something that many dread…and fear. You’ve heard the jokes…or told them…comparing our lives to our children’s lives. “When I was young I had to walk all the way to school, uphill both ways”…or “When I was your age I had to walk all the way across the living room to change the TV channel”. We also joke about our ever increasing age with ‘you know that you’re old if’ statements. “You know that you’re old…if most of your dreams are reruns…if your knees buckle, but your belt won’t…if you try to straighten the wrinkles in your socks, only to find that you aren’t wearing any”. But, joking about it doesn’t change or nullify the fact, we are aging.

Not only do we joke about it, many will do most anything to avoid it. Cosmeticians and exercise enthusiasts and health food manufacturers have made millions showing people how to ‘slow’ or ‘cover’ the aging process. But, since age still happens and there is no way of avoiding it, what can we do to grow old gracefully? What does God expect of us as we age?

What does He desire?

First of all, we need to realize how natural physical aging is. In the Bible book of Ecclesiastes our changing body is described: the ‘keepers of the house (hands) tremble’; the ‘grinders (teeth) cease because they are few’; ‘those looking through the windows (eyes) grow dim’ and the ‘almond tree blossoms’ (hair turns white). But even more disconcerting is that other changes are taking place also. Older people often don’t sleep well (‘rise with song of birds’), are ‘afraid of heights’ and ‘dangers in the streets’ and then, before too long, “Man goes to his eternal home and mourners go about the streets.”

If you can relate to any of these things, how can you best ‘grow old gracefully’? One thing to remember is that our age does not determine our attitudes. We hear about ‘grumpy old men’, but men don’t have to be old to be grumpy, crabby, bitter. We all know older men and women who have ‘young’ attitudes…excited, optimistic, friendly. They are not old! They are not bored, nor are they boring. I trust that you will be seen in that light.

Another thing needed to grow old gracefully, is to remember that the greatest achievements of our lives don’t have to be limited to our younger days. Tennyson wrote ‘Crossing the Bar’ after he was 80. Winston Churchill, England’s savior of Europe, lived his motto: ‘Never, never, never give in’ when he was nearly 70. Thomas Edison was still seeking new inventions when he was 85. In the Bible, a man named Caleb asked for the ‘mountain country, with its hostile ‘giants’, to conquer, after he was 80 years old…and conquered it.

These great people told us that ‘retirement from life’ is not what God wants for those of us who are older. There are still hills to climb and things to conquer. “Go thou and do likewise.” Such endeavors allowed all these to ‘grow old gracefully’.

If you are one of those that are exhibiting some of the characteristics of ‘aging’ described in Ecclesiastes 12, I would encourage you to commit to do what I was challenged to do. For several years I enjoyed running, jogging, walking, in some of the races in our areas… the Bolder Boulder, the mini-marathon from Georgetown to Idaho Springs were two I enjoyed most. The crowds were always fun as was everything of the day…including festivities that were connected to the races, honoring military ‘heroes’ and other public servants. However, one of the best lessons that was drilled into the minds of all participants, was, as each closed in on the finish line…exhausted by the 10K or more run or jog…every person was challenged, ‘run the fastest you have run today all the way to and across the finish line’… and people did.

Young Children Celebrated At The Be Ready Fair

Families, children and community volunteers came together to celebrate a most unique version of the Be Ready Fair on May 6th. The free event held at Estes Park Elementary School parking lot was a drive through event sponsored

by EVICS, Estes Park schools, United Way of Larimer County, and the Early Childhood Council of Larimer County.

Over 45 cars filled with parents and children enjoyed interacting with the many community resource participants on hand to share information as they passed out activities for children.

Be Ready is a Larimer County initiative that supports and promotes school readiness, beginning at birth. Ninetypercent of brain development occurs in the first five years of life, which means it is never too early to start helping children prepare for school success. At the Be Ready Fair, every child received a Be Ready Backpack, free books, and many other goodies. Families talked with community representatives through their car windows about early learning services, recreation, health and medical services, early intervention, pre-literacy, and Kindergarten readiness. Children’s li-

brarians offered information regarding their upcoming story time events, and Town of Estes Park and EVICS Board volunteers were also on hand to entertain and pass out resources to families as they drove through the COVID friendly version of the fair.

Many thanks to the following organizations whose members participated in the Be Ready Fair: Estes Valley Library, Estes Park Health, Larimer County Be Ready Navigators, EPES teachers and Dave (the school bus driver), Estes Park Police Department, Estes Valley Fire Protection District, EVICS, Estes Park Town Board members, YMCA of the Rockies Programs Director and NCHA. I am the first generation in my family to receive an education in the USA. My parents, grandma, and stepdad are very proud of me. I am growing up trilingual. I speak Russian, Ukrainian, and English. One day I want to try to learn Spanish and French.”

Outside of school, Valentyn really likes to play tennis with her Dad and sit and make plans for the future. She likes decorating and improving her room, making it look beautiful. For hobbies, she likes organizing, scrapbooking and painting. She loves to spend time with friends and likes to watch movies and T.V. shows. She currently works at the Awesome T-Shirt store downtown and she also works at the Twin Owls Steakhouse as a busser.

Elizabeth Guild Thanks Dedicated Volunteer Sandy Lockman

Sandy Lockman calls Estes Park home and makes it a better place. She is a relatively rare creature — a Front Range native. Born in Colorado Springs and raised between Loveland and Fort Collins on a dairy farm, Sandy has not strayed too far.

After nursing school, she worked at a Fort Collins hospital for more than 20 years. Her most vivid nursing experience? That would be the flood of 1976 in the Big Thompson Canyon when more than 140 people died. Sandy was assigned to a search and rescue helicopter team that flew the foggy, wet canyon for almost a week, taking survivors to regional hospitals.

“It had a huge emotional impact on me that never quite went away," she said in a recent interview. In fact, to have met the friendly, chatty Sandy behind the counter at the Elizabeth Guild Thrift Shop, you would never have known that she suffered from PTSD. “Back then, there was no help for caregivers and first responders like there is now," she said.

to hotel management as a new career.

She worked at seasonal resorts in Montana, Wyoming and Idaho for several years before coming back to Colorado, specifically Estes Park. ”I cannot not work,” she said. She has worked at a resort, a retail store, a cafe and finally at the Elizabeth Guild. For the past six years, up to her recent, perhaps temporary retirement, Sandy has cashiered at the Guild.

"I loved it," she said. "I'm a real people person and here we have customers from all over the world. We also have customers who come in every day looking for treasures." Sandy also is touched by parents who come in to clothe their school-children for a fraction of the cost at a department store. “I love the fact our prices are so low," she said.

Sandy said the Guild volunteers are absolutely vital to the successful mission of the store, which is to supply the hospital with equipment. Describing the corps volunteer group as a bunch of “cool old ladies," Sandy urges anyone thinking of donating a few hours of time to the store to do it. "It fulfills something in a person they don't even know is missing," she said. "I absolutely urge people to volunteer. I know everyone is busy but even a couple of hours a week makes a difference.” Across the nation hospitals are struggling financially so to have a place that is dedicated to helping local healthcare needs is vital, she added.

Regular donation hours at 427 W. Elkhorn Ave. are Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. If you have large donations, be sure to phone Manager David Trabold first at (970) 5867205 to make sure storage space is available. Remember, the Guild cannot take baby car seats, TVs, computers, printers or any damaged items. All proceeds benefit Estes Park Health either in the form of employee scholarships or the purchase of medical equipment.

I believe we can strengthen our waste system to encompass more redirection. I believe we can interest the public in the solution. And I believe that Estes Park can become an ecologically sustainable community. I also believe that doing so will help the local economy, especially those in the tourism industry.

We talk a lot about “leave no trace” on the trails, but that applies to the village as well. Admittedly, single use packaging is convenient, but unless we can consistently and uniformly recycle the packaging, this pattern of use it and throw it “out” is a terrible waste of recoverable resources – one that I believe the Earth (and its people) cannot afford. Colorado House Bill 21-1162 passed the House last week and now progresses to the Colorado Senate, but until we have a universal network of such bills, passed and in effect, responsible individuals must make use of reusing and recycling for disposal of such things available – and we must choose to abhor items that cannot take advantage of those avenues.

Each collection location, whether public or private, has its own parameters for acceptable recycling and for what they do with the things they collect. Beginning last week, and available at www.eptrail.com, www.epnews.com, and Facebook: Estes Recycles, this series of articles hopes to clarify the various requirements and present options for disposal of things no longer of internal value to your individual household or business.

One caution, before we begin, if an item is in good repair and would be of value to another household, do not recycle. Instead – reuse! Sell it or give it away.

This newspaper offers free ads. And we have local thrift shops who would make good use of the donation.

Glass can be recycled over and over – infinitely – until someone combines it with other ingredients to make a non-recoverable product. (A good example is leaded glass – reuse, don’t recycle. Glass is collected in Larimer County at the Landfill Campus [LC], Timberline Recy-

cling [TR], and the Loveland Recycling [LR] as well as both Estes Park locations: the Transfer Station [TS] and the Residential Recycling Center [RRC]. It is also collected by Eco-Cycle [EC] throughout Boulder County.

All glass recycling collected by the above locations is now processed by Momentum Recycling at their Wheatridge and Broomfield plants where they clean, sterilize, dry, sort by color, and process glass into cullet of various sizes, down to glass sand and glass powder. The processed glass eventually becomes new jars and bottles, fiberglass insulation, abrasives, asphalt, matches, and other products. However, Momentum cannot recycle drinking glasses. (Clear Intentions, who used to process glass, including drinking glasses, for Estes Park residents and businesses, did not survive 2020.)

Only glass bottles and jars can be collected in single stream and Larimer County has set a four ounce minimum size for our Estes single stream collection. Any color of glass is now welcome.

Yes! That peanut butter jar should be clean. Source separated collections in [LC] [LR] [TR] and [EC] are capable of accepting smaller sizes and sometimes broken glass is welcome. In good condition, windows plus glass patio and shower doors can go to Uncle Benny’s in Loveland (for reuse). Glass vases (including leaded glass) can go to the Enchanted Florist for reuse. Eco-Cycle accepts those that are damaged plus table tops, picture frame glass, tempered glass, and other items at the CHaRM facility (for recycling). Check individual websites for details. Microwave trays, laminated automotive glass, ceramics, light bulbs, mirrors, porcelain, and Pyrex cannot be recycled due to additives in the glass.

Next week, we progress to all things metal, including cans, foil and pans, aerosol containers, electronics, vehicles, microwaves, refrigerators, and appliances.

For the last 39 years Crossroads Ministry has been actively involved in caring for people during and after disasters, emergencies, and seasons of great need.

Our local government doesn’t need to fund a public assistance office because Crossroads has stepped up to fill this role. When compared to a typical public assistance office funded by tax payers and operated by a government agency, Crossroads offers similar resources, but the big difference is how we mobilize volunteers to love their neighbors through acts of compassion. Our hope is to be the kind of people who are kind, patient, gentle, joyful, peaceful, and selfcontrolled as we assist our neighbors get through a tough season in life. For some it could be a temporary fix while for others it may be on-going support due to their situation in life, but no matter what it is, we’re committed to be there for people in our community. We have a full-time Case Manager that works individually with each of our neighbors to find ways we can maximize our investment in them on a case by case basis.

Since our inception as an organization we have operated according to policies and procedures that help each person reach their highest level of self-sufficiency. We’ve established specific dollar amounts for categories such as rent and utility assistance so that we assist people and not enable anyone to continue down an unhealthy path. Of course, we do all of this in a spirit of love and compassion with a sincere desire to help and not hurt our neighbors. If you’d like to learn more

We have a strong belief that no one should go hungry in our town, so we maintain a fully-stocked food pantry to be able to offer food as a first response in meeting needs. However, what we have discovered is that people are hungry for more than just food to feed the body, but desire to live within a loving community where they can have healthy and meaningful relationships. I think we’re doing a great job of building relationships of trust that allow our volunteers to interact with our clients in a way that no other agency can come close to providing. We believe unconditional love is transformative and can change lives from the inside out. For us to continue doing what we do best, we need people to help us fund the services that cost money. Time and talents can take us quite a ways in meeting needs, but it’s the treasures that are needed to pay rent, purchase food, and sustain a building where a majority of our work takes place. The Estes Valley Restorative Justice Partnership (EVRJP) and the Estes Valley Library will be hosting two Community Conversations in May: “Communicating with Care” on Wednesday, May 19 from 7 to 8:30 p.m. on Zoom We may want to communicate with others in such a way that we gain knowledge and bridge divides, but those conversations don’t always come naturally.

Most of us struggle to self-evaluate our communication skills. We might be unaware of words and actions that shut down healthy dialogue when discussing divisive issues. In this conversation, we will actively share and explore what works and what doesn’t, and we’ll reflect on ways that we can improve our interactions with others.

still need to go. Some believe that focusing on the past prevents forward progress; others think we still need to come to terms with our shadow side.

We will share perspectives and explore areas of common ground.

The annual Summer Reading Program begins Friday, May 21 at the Estes Valley Library, inspired by this year’s theme “Tails and Tales.”

We’re never too young or too old to discover—or re-discover—the personal satisfaction of reading. The program is for all ages: adults, teens, kids, and even babies and toddlers. Reading encompasses both the written and spoken word—including reading aloud to a child, or listening to an audiobook in the car or on the trail.

Besides the natural allure of books, the Summer Reading Program sweetens the deal with great prizes available for everyone—officially known as ‘reading incentives’. Participants will enjoy the ease and convenience of logging their reading achievements online, 24/7, from anywhere.

Reading can include pages read from books, magazines and newspapers, as well as audiobooks and shared family read-alouds. It can include printed material as well as digital downloads read from a personal device.

Reading is a nurturing activity for all ages, and especially important for kids on summer break. Studies have documented that kids who read for enjoyment avoid the “summer slide.” They return to school in the fall feeling all the

more ready to learn.

Children can look forward to Summer Reading prizes like a Color-Me Turtle, an Animal Hopper Ball, and of course, free books to keep and build a home library of storybooks.

Teen participants ages 11 to 18 will earn books to keep just for signing up— and a 4M Solar Rover STEM Activity Kit for completing 20 hours of reading.

Those who complete the challenge will be entered into a drawing for a Samsung Galaxy Tablet.

For adults, complete just one of eight Reading Challenges and enter a drawing for a local-business gift card of your choice—then complete five challenges to enter the grand-prize drawing.

Library collections are filled with materials to inspire reading for every age group. In addition, digital collections offer the convenience of downloading books, audiobooks, comic books and magazine 24/7 from anywhere.

Robert Fuller Risch Robert Fuller Risch of Estes Park died on May 5, 2021 at the Life Care Center of Longmont at the age of 95. Bob was born to Gus and Verna Risch of Brookings, SD on March 30, 1926. Gus was a farmer and by the time Bob reached high school he had become indispensable to the running of the family farm.

When Bob entered the US Navy in 1944, Gus quit farming and moved his family in to town. At the conclusion of WWII, Bob returned to Brookings, South Dakota to attend South Dakota State University, graduating in 1949 with a B. S. in Electrical Engineering.

Bob married Roberta Coxe, also from South Dakota and a graduate of SDSU. Roberta was teaching school in Brookings, South Dakota when they met.

Bob began his working years with the Rural Electrification Association, pioneering the development of the electric grid in rural areas. Bob and Roberta lived in Coleman, SD for 4 years, LeMars, Iowa for 2 years, and Emerson, NE for 7½ years. During that time, they had two children, Curtis and Nancy.

In 1962 Bob and Roberta and their children moved to Denver, Colorado where Bob worked for Tri-State Generation and Transmission as chief engineer – again working with rural power distribution but on a much larger scale. In 1976, the eastern and western power grids of the United States were tied together for the first time at Stegall, Nebraska and Bob was involved in making that happen.

In 1979 Bob became the Executive Director of Missouri Basin Systems Group – still working with rural power but now focused on future planning. At this point, Bob and Roberta began living in Estes Park, Colorado, on weekends. Eventually Bob was able to move his office to Estes Park and they began living there full-time. By the time Bob retired in

1988, he had become concerned that government over-regulation was inhibiting the growth of power production to the extent that severe power shortages were on the horizon. In 1993, Bob received the Distinguished Engineer Award from his alma mater, South Dakota State University.

Bob was a stalwart member of Estes Park Baptist Church, serving in various capacities including Chairman of the Board of Deacons and Church Treasurer. He also served on the Executive Board of the Longs Peak Association of Southern Baptists and the Executive Board of the Colorado Baptist General Convention. Beginning in 1979, Bob was active in Gideons International. He was a founding member of the Estes Park Gideon Camp and served as president of Colorado Gideons International from 1977 - 1979. He is a Past Commander of American Legion Post #60 in Emerson, Nebraska as well as Past Master of the Masonic Lodge there.

Bob is preceded in death by his wife, Roberta (Coxe); his son, Curtis; his twin sister, Marian Miller (Bruce); and his brother, John. Bob is survived by his daughter Nancy Strohm (Tacoma, WA); three grandchildren, Alan (Seattle, WA), Autumn (Fairbanks, AK), and Deanna (Tacoma, WA); two great-grandchildren (Ion and Louis); his brother Earl (Brookings, SD) and his sister Lynette Johnson (Loren) of Estes Park.

There will be a graveside service at 10:00 a.m. on May 15th at Estes Valley Memorial Gardens. Friends and family are encouraged to attend. Memorials in his name may be given to Gideons International through the Allnutt Funeral Home 1302 Graves Ave, Estes Park, CO 80517. For further information contact Allnutt Funeral Services.

Keith Machin Long time Estes Park resident, Keith Machin died at Estes Park Health Thursday morning, February 25, 2021.

He was 94 years old.

Keith E. Machin was born October 16, 1926 in Hays, KS. His parents were Ralph and Sylvia (Carlson) Machin. Keith served his country during World War II in the United States Navy aboard the USS Wadleigh, USS Remey and USS Fullam in the Pacific Reserve Fleet San Diego, CA. He was awarded the American Area Campaign Medal and the World War II Victory Medal.

After being discharged in 1947, Keith moved from Wichita, KS to Estes Park where he married Marjorie Wright at the Presbyterian Church which is now the site of the Old Church Shops in Downtown. The couple moved into a home which they rebuilt themselves in 1950 and raised two daughters. Keith worked at the Estes Park Power Plant for 30 years.

He was a faithful member of Presbyterian Community Church of the Rockies and one of the longest members of

American Legion Post 119 and a member of Masonic Lodge #183 of the AF & AM since the late 1950s.

Keith was preceded in death by his wife Marjorie in 1995, by his parents and a sister Twila Barbour. He is survived by daughters Gail Lewis and husband Wayne of Longmont, CO and Sheryle Picard and husband Jerry of Highlands Ranch, CO and grandsons Richard Lewis, Brian Lewis and Bradley Harrah and brother Lee Machin of Estes Park.

To celebrate the life of Keith Machin, a memorial service will be held Saturday May 22, 2021 at 1:30 p.m. at Presbyterian Community Church of the Rockies. His unwavering generosity, kindness and never putting himself before others will always remain with us.

Memorial donations may be made in Keith’s name to the Multiple Sclerosis Society in care of Allnutt Funeral Service 1302 Graves Avenue Estes Park, CO 80517.

Carolyn Jean Cordsen Carolyn Jean Cordsen died December 30, 2020 at the Estes Park Health Living Center. She was 86.

Carolyn was born April 14, 1934 in Wahoo, Nebraska the second child of Joe and Blanche McKlem. She married William Charles Cordsen Sr. on April 15, 1956 in Pueblo. The couple raised three sons.

She is survived by sons William (Susan) Cordsen Jr. of Pueblo West; John (Dianna) Cordsen of Estes Park and Donald (Danielle) Cordsen of Queen City, Arizona. She is also survived by nine grandchildren, one great-grand-

child, a sisterin-law Maxine Cordsen, numerous nieces, nephews and extended family. She was preceded in death by her husband William, her father Joe, mother Blanche, sister Virginia Kness, brother-in-law Darrell Kness and brother-inlaw Lloyd Cordsen.

A celebration of life will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, May 22, 2021 at the Mountain Side Pavillion, YMCA of the Rockies.

Kenneth Lewis Jandrain Kenneth Lewis Jandrain, 90, of Estes Park Colorado passed away on Tuesday May 4, 2021 at Life Care Center of Longmont after a recent stroke.

Born February 21, 1931 in Green Bay, Wisconsin, Kenneth is the third child of the late Dr. Richard R. and Madeline (Kenney) Jandrain of Luxemburg, WI. On October 24,1953 he married the love of his life, Joyce Mae (Servais) Jandrain of Champion, WI. Kenneth’s early career was as a sales representative for Wisconsin Public Service in Green Bay, Wisconsin (21 years).

In 1975, Ken and Joyce purchased the Caramel Crisp shop in Estes Park Colorado which the family still owns and operates today. Kenneth was an Army Veteran, served in Germany from 1951 to 1953 and was a member of American Legion Posts in Luxemburg, WI, and Estes Park, CO. In his younger years he was an avid hunter and fisherman. Later in life, he enjoyed viewing wildlife and birds from his cherished home in Estes Park.

Kenneth had a strong commitment to the traditional Catholic Faith and enjoyed reading all the supporting literature. Kenneth was a big Green Bay Packers fan.

Kenneth is survived by his beloved wife Joyce Jandrain, son Christopher (Cristine) Jandrain, Green Bay, WI,

and their sons Eric (Kriston) Jandrain and Matthew Jandrain, son Dominic (Kathryn) Jandrain Buffalo, WY and their daughter Lindsey-Teal Jandrain, son Gregory Jandrain and his significant other Belinda Reasol San Diego, CA and Greg’s daughter Winifride Marien, and Wini’s mother Marlene Marien and Wini’s sisters Tamara and Sabrina, and Wini’s brother Stefan, Kenneth’s son Tod (Jennifer) Jandrain Loveland, CO, Kenneth’s son Scott Jandrain Estes Park, CO, and his daughter Lillie Jandrain, Kenneth’s daughter Jillian (Samuel) Jandrain-Rountree Victorville, CA and Jillian’s daughter Taryn (Julie) Jestus-Watson and Jillian’s son Trey Middlebrooks and his brothers Robert and Anthony Middlebrooks. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother Richard R. (Barbara) Jandrain Jr., and sisters Jean (Kenneth) Junio, Collette (Robert) Ullman, and Claudette (James) Stormer.

Visitation was at Allnutt Funeral Services, on Tuesday, May 11, 2021. A Traditional Catholic Funeral Mass was held at St. Isidore Catholic Church, 32100 E Colfax Ave, Watkins, CO on Wednesday, May 12, 2021. Burial followed the Mass in the St. Isidore Cemetery. See www.allnuttestespark.com.
