Street Improvement Projects Beginning In May Contractors for the Town of Estes Park will begin the 2021 street improvement projects on Town-owned streets in May, weather permitting. There will be separate contractors for the annual striping, chip and crack seal, and overlay and patching plus parking lot improvements.

Working hours will be 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., Monday through Friday. Local access

will be maintained during the work although there may be brief periods when on-street parking and private driveways are not accessible.

Annual Striping: From approximately May 17 through May 27, the Town of Estes Park’s striping contractor will be repainting center lines, edge lines, and crosswalks on Town-owned roadways.

Moving lane closures will be necessary during the painting. Motorists are advised to drive with caution in the areas where crews are working. Signs will be posted to identify areas of wet paint.

Chip and Crack Seal: Vance Brothers, Inc. will tentatively begin the crack seal work on May 24, and the work is expected to last one to two weeks. Chip seal work will begin on July 12 and is expected to last one week, with the restriping of chip-sealed streets occurring on the week of July 19. These surface treatments will involve moving lane closures and are not expected to result in any full road closures. Please drive with caution and follow the guidance of any traffic control flaggers who may be directing traffic.

Parking Lot, Overlay and Patching: Coulson Excavating Company, Inc. will begin the 2021 Overlay and Patching Program on May 10, and the initial work will focus on repaving and restriping the Performance Park parking lot by May 21. The parking lot will also receive sidewalk, curb ramp, and drainage improvements.

Coulson will return after the 4th of July weekend to begin the overlay and patching component of their project, which will continue into August. Roads identified for overlay improvements include Country Club Drive, Far View Drive, Grand Estates Drive, High Acres Drive, Pine Lane, Saint Vrain Lane, Tranquil Lane, and Vail Court. This program is not expected to result in any full road closures, but lane closures and local detours will be necessary to complete the work.

All work is part of the 2024 Street Improvement Program (STIP) which aims to improve the average street system Pavement Condition Index (PCI) to above 70 (fair to good condition) by 2024. The plan, which receives its funding from the voter-approved 2014 Ballot Issue 1A sales tax, includes extensive preventative maintenance which will preserve good road conditions throughout the Town.

Rooftop Rodeo Tickets Available Beginning May 6 The Town of Estes Park and Estes Park Western Heritage, Inc. have announced that a reduced number of tickets for the 2021 Rooftop Rodeo will be available for purchase beginning at noon on Thursday, May 6 at www.rooftoprodeo.com.

This year’s rodeo takes place nightly from Monday, July 5 through Saturday, July 10 at the Estes Park Events Complex. Attendance is being limited this year to allow for social distancing.

Standard ticket prices are $20 for general admission and $15 for senior citizens, military personnel, and children (ages 3-12). Admission is free for children age two and under. General admission discounts of 25 percent are available for groups of 15 or more and will apply

automatically at checkout. The Rooftop Rodeo will be live streamed all six nights on the Cowboy Channel.

Plan Ahead For Spring Runoff; Wildfire Has Changed The Landscape

Recent wildfires will have lasting effects on the landscape and create a heightened risk of flooding for years to come. Locations downhill and downstream from burned areas may be susceptible to flash flooding and debris flows, especially in and near steep and narrow terrain. Rainfall that would normally be absorbed by the forest canopy and loose tree litter and duff on the ground may instead quickly run off. Because of this, much less rainfall is required to produce a flash flood, and the potential for debris flows increases with the loss of plant material that holds the soil in place.

In the Estes Valley, spring runoff typically starts in April and peaks in June.

Each spring there is a chance that warmer temperatures and higher than average snow packs will result in higher flows and rising water levels along streams and rivers throughout the Estes Valley. Sudden, prolonged warm spells combined with heavy rains increase the chances of localized flooding.

The Town’s Public Works Department has an action plan for minor and major flood events. Each year staff prepare sand bags, equipment and concrete barriers for short-notice deployment to public areas prone to flooding so that roads, bridges, utilities and public safety are protected.

Owners of property along rivers and streams are encouraged to clear debris and excess sediments where needed to preserve maximum channel capacity. It is ultimately every citizen’s responsibility to protect their own private property and to consider how risks on his or her property affect neighbors upstream and downstream. The Town of Estes Park encourages residents to reach out to their neighbors and work together to address potential problems. Some actions private property owners can take to protect property are: 1. Stabilize undercut and unstable river banks and reduce blockage potential a. Cut down unstable trees (leave stump and roots in place) that could fall and block water flow along the channel or at

downstream bridges and culverts. b.

Leave existing roots and small woody and vegetative debris on riverbanks to reduce flow velocities and resist bank erosion. c. Apply quick-growing seed mixes to bare stream banks, such as Regreen (Triticum aestivum) and other cover crops (i.e., annual species that germinate quickly). d. Selectively remove problematic debris from the river; permits required; contact the Town for assistance. e. Permits for work in the floodplain are required and available to residents within the Town limits by contacting the Town of Estes Park’s Floodplain Engineer, Jennifer Waters, at jwaters@estes.org or 970-577-3577. She is available to provide mitigation advice during the permit process.

2. Prevent or reduce flood water damage using sand bags or hydro barriers. a. Bags can only be placed adjacent to buildings to divert water around buildings, NOT in the river channels or on the banks as this can interfere with stream flow. Look for supplies at local hardware stores.

3. Consider purchasing flood insurance for peace of mind. Because the Town of Estes Park participates in the National Flood Insurance Program, all properties are eligible to purchase flood insurance, not just those that are required to hold flood insurance by lenders. Purchase flood insurance with your local agent or at www.Floodsmart.gov. New policies have a 30-day waiting period before they go into effect, so the time to purchase is now.

Finally, the Town of Estes Park requests residents notify the Police Department at 970-586-4000 if they observe water leaving the banks of any river in Estes Park during runoff.

There, a long day’s hike north from The Retreat near Glen Haven, my Grandma Pearl Gard Koenig and her sisters were each given 40-acres of land by their father, Will Gard. A cabin was erected on Grandma’s land.

Over the years it’s been a precious source of fond memories for my family and me—playing cards beside kerosene lamps, toting water, cooking on a wood burning stove, picking raspberries, hunting mushrooms, fly fishing, using an outhouse, and more.

Most reports describe the area surrounding the cabin as being like a moonscape, causing me to believe the cabin was no more and tempering any desire I might have had to go confirm my fears.

The briefings were part of collaborative efforts based at the Estes Event Center that involved Fire Chief David Wolf, Police Captain Eric Rose, PIO Kate Rusch, RMNP Superintendent Darla Sidles, Larimer County Sheriff Justin Smith, rotating fire crews, and countless others working tirelessly to curtail the wildfires. During the briefings and subsequent meetings, it took all the strength I could muster to maintain a sense of clarity and focused determination as the fires rapidly spread.

I will never forget the helpless feeling that overwhelmed me as I watched the line of the Cameron Peak fire push past CSU Pingree Park Mountain Campus, go over the mountain toward the homes and properties on the little south fork of the Poudre, and head toward Glen Haven. As the fire proceeded, I swallowed hard, put aside concerns about Grandma’s cabin and focused laser-like on the safety of Estes Park’s townspeople.

A few days ago, cousin Kris Koenig— who was checking out his cabin at Rustic— called to say the trees on the hillside above his cabin had been burned, but the cabin was fine. He then said the fire had circumvented the little south property and Grandma’s cabin was fine too.

Armed with Kris’ information about Grandma’s cabin, I’ve taken time to look back and consider what did and did not occur. Obviously, Estes Park escaped the fires. So did Glen Haven. Clearly the fires ravaged many homes and much land... but not to the extent once feared.

Looking back, I’ve come to understand that the fear about what could have been, that took hold of my imagination, exacted an emotional toll from me, making me forget that during emergencies, clarity of action must include compassion and faith. That miracles do happen—snow stops fire, cabins survive. A lesson that will make me a better member of humanity and a worthier mayor.

Estes Chamber - Spotlight On Business By: Donna Carlson Executive Director Estes Chamber Of Commerce

Flip the "m" in the word "me" upside down and get "we."

We learned this early in the history of the Estes Chamber. When Donna Carlson you shift from "me" to "we" it changes our words, our actions and our motives. This is why the Chamber’s first leadership bootcamp is grounded in customer-focused marketing, knowing that in a tourist economy focused on the customer experience, everyone in the community benefits.

We kicked off the series with a Chamber Business Book Club on Judith Glaser's book, Creating We. Glaser’s central metaphor in this book is the human immune system, which demonstrates you cure cancer by replicating healthy cells. When you are talking about building community, replace cancer with toxic behavior like gossiping, lack of emotional control, operating from assumptions and anything that prizes the ego over the team, and you can see how one move by many in the right direction can change everything. Built on this premise, we constructed a bootcamp asking healthy businesses to share what’s working.

We started the bootcamp series on April 15 with a business basics conversation. Adam Shake opened with information about Estes Park EDC programs for business mastery. Then Ryan Bross with Bank of Colorado shared an introductory course on creating a simple accounting system and revenue goals.

Marketing Basics on April 22 laid out some great examples from Carey Stevanus of Cabintique and Jamie Palmesano with Brownfields on merchandising for sales success based on what customers are asking for – and learning what the customer wants and who they are by starting a conversation and writing down what we learn.

Keeping a close connection with customers is part of staff training at Rock Cut Brewing Co. Kirby Hazelton explains how the bar was designed (in a non-COVID world) to provide the best possible access to customers. Before every shift, there is an information hand-off between staff members, so the customer has a seamless experience. The same premise applies to marketing – give away what the customer wants first, then ask for the sale. Val Thompson created a memorable experience getting right to the heart of the matter when she first started the pie shop … with pie.

"When we first started the pie shop, we

gave away a lot of product,” Val explained. Mark Igel with The Taffy Shop uses the same marketing strategy with taffy. He’s putting 650 pieces of taffy into the Bernese Mountain Dog Show registration bags to say, “Welcome! Come visit.”

Building good will with the community starts with living your brand values at work. Amy Hamrick shared how Kind Coffee was built on a dream of what the world can look like and they live that philosophy in the way they serve coffee. When she took over Estes Park Coffee Company in 2002, she rebranded to reflect the value of organic and fair-trade coffee, but over time that kindness to the planet has become a defining value for their whole business.

It's reflected in their philanthropy too.

They donate 1% of profits to support a cleaner environment.

Her brand values support her workforce development strategy by helping her attract like-minded people. "I hardly have to advertise," Amy said. They line up to get a job at Kind Coffee. Another way she develops her people is by empowering them to create new ideas. Last year when prom was cancelled because of the pandemic, Jana suggested a prom

photo booth outside the coffee shop. "Yes!" Amy said.

"Great idea! You run the whole thing."

And she did. Empowerment creates employee loyalty.

Unifying the team is part of the success at Bird & Jim as well, where Melissa Strong’s open kitchen concept tells the customer that transparency is important.

It starts with training for all her employees from the very beginning. Her manager team collaborates on the norms, standards and values that guide the way they serve their team and their customers.

They live their values at the beginning of each shift, when every team member checks in with a buddy, creating a system of support for each member as a human as a baseline for putting self on the shelf and getting to work.

That’s essentially the theme of this bootcamp series – to create a more lasting impact on what is important by being curious, providing safety to share opinions, exercising emotional control and ultimately taking action that demonstrates you are a part of the solution. We will keep building on this bootcamp series, turning over new strategies to flip old paradigms and continue making Estes Park a great place to live, work and play.

While I stood in the checkout lane at the grocery store, I tried to look nonchalant about the one item I was buying. I got to the place where the conveyor belt stops at the cash register and placed the item on the belt.

“Don’t tell anyone I’m buying this,” I said, leaning in and speaking softly to the clerk.

“Why not?” she looked puzzled.

“Because it’s not really food,” I said, surprised that I needed to explain.

“Everybody buys it,” she said, making my excuse for me. I glanced back at the three people waiting in line behind me. They each nodded gravely, as if to say, “It’s ok, lady. We all do it.” I almost turned to them so that I could say, “My name is Sarah and I eat Velveeta.” But I wanted to get out of there before anyone saw me with the distinctive yellow-orange box, so I skipped my Velveeta Anonymous introduction.

Velveeta. Even the name sounds fake.

But it didn’t start out being fake food. The cheese spread was invented in 1918 when the Monroe Cheese Company wanted to find a way to use its misshaped and broken Swiss cheese wheels. Somebody figured out a way to melt the cheese chunks together with some whey to make a soft cheesy spread—so it really was cheese back then. It was named Velveeta because of its velvety smooth consistency.

Over time, more ingredients got added and today Velveeta is made with a whopping 17 ingredients! The FDA no longer allows Kraft to call the stuff “cheese.” The bright orange “pasteurized prepared cheese product” can be stored at room temperature for a very long time and once its silver foil-like wrap has been peeled away from the block of jiggly, rubbery artificialness, you can wrap it up air-tightly and it will last in the fridge indefinitely. I know. We all know. Because we all buy it.

And when we do, we don’t ever use the whole brick. Nor do we eat it on crackers for lunch. We don’t slice it and put it on a charcuterie board between the brie and the prosciutto. We only ever eat it in its melted form. “Liquid gold,” Kraft calls it.

That’s why I was discretely purchasing Velveeta—to make that chili queso dip popular at Super Bowl parties. (Remember Super Bowl parties? We will get to have them again—if everyone will get their vaccines!) I grew up eating macaroni and cheese—not made with glowing, neon orange powder but with Velveeta. It was sooo gooey and sooo yummy. We also put chunks of Velveeta in our tomato soup.

But we didn’t (and don’t) make grilled cheese sandwiches with Velveeta. For grilled cheese we use American, which is not much closer to being true cheese than Velveeta. For a food product to officially qualify as “cheese,” it has to be more than half pressed curds of milk (technically

that’s what cheese is).

American doesn’t pass muster (which is different than muenster).

But when two slices of bread hold a flat square of American (with the corners folded in so they don’t melt onto the pan), I call it a grilled cheese sandwich.

Overall I am health-conscious when I prepare meals. But there are other nonfood foods that I am willing to break my own rules for.

• Pillsbury crescent rolls, for instance. I don’t buy them, except when I make my dad’s delicious chicken crescent squares.

They’re oh, so bad for you and they are oh, so good. (Cream cheese, butter, onion and chicken mixed and wrapped in crescent rolls, rolled in butter and seasoned bread crumbs and baked to golden perfection.)

• Ritz crackers are really just crescent rolls in crunch form. Have you ever noticed how one tastes like the other? Close your eyes, bite into a Ritz cracker, and think about a Pillsbury crescent roll.

Same.

• Pop Tarts. Shame on me, but I love ‘em.

I don’t buy a box even once a year, though.

There’s simply no nutritional value whatsoever in a Pop Tart. Darn it! I had a homemade one at a bakery last Saturday.

Of course it was tasty and probably better for me than the store-bought variety, but I’m a loyalist. I like my Pop Tart from a box, unwrapped from a foil-like bag, toasted, with butter melted on top.

Nunga-nunga, as my brother says.

• Cool Whip. When this container of whippy white stuff was first introduced in 1966, it was a welcomed replacement to Dream Whip, a powder that, when added to milk, required the use of a mixer to make imitation whipped cream. After the Cool Whip was gone, we still had the container to use in place of Tupperware.

Nowadays, I do my best not to use any more plastic than I have to so I avoid buying the artificial whipped cream. Besides, I prefer whipped cream made with thick cream from a cow. But every once in awhile I’ll give in and buy a tub of the stuff for a “salad” recipe, like the apple salad we had at least once a week when I was a kid.

(Chopped apples, marshmallows, and Cool Whip mixed with mayonnaise.)

When I make it today I add celery, nuts and raisins. Those healthy add-ins make me feel better about eating fake whipped cream out of a plastic container.

Nonetheless, I don’t want anyone to see me buying it at the grocery store.

Major Road Work Continues In Rocky Mountain National Park Will Require Nightly Closures On Three Mile Section Of Road Beginning May 16 through September, major road construction will occur again on US 36 inside of Rocky Mountain National Park. The work will take place on a three-mile section of US 36, just west of Bear Lake Road junction to east of Deer Ridge Junction. Beginning on May 16, this section of road will be closed nightly from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m., Sunday nights through Friday mornings. There will be no nightly closures on Friday and Saturday nights.

When the road reopens each morning at 7 a.m. to traffic, motorists should expect delays and a rough surface. Bicy-

clists and motorcyclists should avoid this section of road this summer and enter the park through the Fall River Entrance.

Sections of asphalt will be removed and a new surface will be installed.

Many curves will be reconstructed to bring them into compliance with federal highway standards.

Upper Beaver Meadows Road will also be inaccessible during nightly closures.

The Stakeholder Services Team at Visit Estes Park (VEP) hosts an annual lottery to fill the featured listing spots on the listing pages of visitestespark.com. Why a lottery? The placement is desirable (they’re guaranteed to show up within the first 15 listings on a specific category page) and there is more demand than there is supply. Entrants submit their listing category preferences using a Google form, then an online randomization process is utilized to choose a winner for each listing category.

This process gives all businesses an equal opportunity to purchase these popular placements. A waitlist is also generated from the entrants using the randomization process; winners have first right of refusal for the placement and pay for it as part of their annual advertising buy with VEP. If winners choose to refuse the placement the businesses on the waitlist are notified, in turn, of the opportunity to claim the placement.

COVID Recovery Plan Completed; Feedback Needed A recovery plan designed to guide longterm recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic has been developed by the Larimer Recovery Collaborative.

Partners in the Larimer Recovery Collaborative plan include Larimer County and municipal governments, nonprofit organizations, community-rooted organizations, and members of the community.

While the COVID-19 Pandemic has not ended, the plan is being updated as the recovery continues, adjusting it as necessary.

Feedback from Larimer County residents to adjust the recovery plan is critical to provide a better fit to the needs of our community. To view the plan and provide feedback visit tinyurl.com/vnauvcmw A version in Spanish will be available soon.

The plan was developed to be adjustable with ongoing response efforts, including lessons that have been learned during COVID-19 and the long-term impacts on the community and the nation. Investigating The Fish Kill On The North St. Vrain

Investigative efforts by Colorado Parks and Wildlife to assess damages to aquatic life on the North St. Vrain Creek following last week’s tanker spill of gasoline into the river are ongoing.

CPW is assessing the extent and magnitude of the fish mortality. In large scale incidents, counting and/or collecting every single dead fish is not possible, however, there are statistically valid methods to accurately estimate the losses.

Since the initial response by wildlife officers, several hundred fish have been collected, identified, counted and stored as evidence over the past several days.

Mindi May, CPW’s water quality coordinator, and Dr. Pete Cadmus, aquatic research scientist at CPW’s Aquatic Toxicology Lab, spent Saturday assessing the

river. They collected macroinvertebrate samples, took water quality measurements, measured algae and continued to survey for fish.

“We visited numerous sites on the river from just upstream of the crash site all the way down to the confluence with the South Saint Vrain,” May said.

As a reminder, it is not legal for citizens to transport live fish. Information and observations about dead fish or other wildlife impacts related to the spill can be reported to CPW at lyonsfishinfo@state.co.us.

As we continue to investigate the damages, we are also working with our partners at the Environmental Protection Agency, Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment and the Colorado State Patrol to collect as much information as possible.

Opportunity To Become An Estes Park Museum Volunteer

The Estes Park Museum has nearly 30 volunteers that donate a cumulative average of 2,500 hours supporting the museum every year – that is equivalent to $63,575! It is evident that the museum could not function without these invaluable individuals helping the museum achieve its mission on a daily basis serving over 8,000 guests annually.

The opportunity to join this team is now! As the Estes Park Museum gallery prepares to reopen, it is the perfect time to volunteer and give back to the community. There are a variety of opportunities to get involved with a typical three-hour shift once a week, every other week, or once a month. Staff will pair up individuals with their interests to such positions as: Gallery Host: Welcome and interact with hundreds of guests from all over the world by serving as the front-line representative for the museum gallery experience.

Shop Volunteer: Help guests as they explore the wide variety of books, artwork, and gift items that celebrate local history. Training provided to conduct sales with a simple cash register.

Downtown Walking Tour Docent: Lead small group tours on a .7 mile loop starting in Bond Park that highlights buildings, individuals, and events that helped shaped our current downtown district.

Historic Fall River Hydroplant Docent: Lead group tours to discuss F. O. Stanley’s 1909 Hydroplant, the insatiable need and growth of electricity over the decades, and the 1982 Lawn Lake Flood that ended operation at this historic site.

The project is making great progress and is on track for a late summer 2021 dedication in Estes Park. The project has chosen Jane DeDecker of Loveland, Colorado to be the primary artist for the project. Jane has produced a beautiful design for the monument and is already hard at work on it. The design will include 12 individual bronze sculptures (and the stories) of 12 historical women of Estes Park in a wonderful park-like setting along the Riverwalk in downtown Estes Park. The women featured in the monument are diverse and from multiple time frames in our history and all have contributed to make Estes Park the great and interesting place that it is today. The centerpiece of the monument will be a bronze sculpture of Eleanor Hondius and her story. Eleanor will be sitting on large steps allowing the public to “sit” with her. Pieter Hondius (Eleanor’s son) strongly supports this project and has made a sizable donation himself. This monument will be beautiful, educational and inspirational to all who experience it. Jane is also creating (by an act of Congress) a large Women’s Suffrage Monument for the Mall in Washington, DC. Needless to say, Jane is very talented and Estes Park is very fortunate to have her on this project. There are currently hundreds of your friends and neighbors who are working in some way to support this wonderful project.

All we need now, is you!

The project is currently primarily focused on raising the remainder of the

money needed for the monument. The project has raised well over $70,000 of the $100,000 needed for completion. It’s time to wrap this fundraising effort up.

Samantha Workman Named Finalist In Singing Competition

Congratulations to Estes Park High School Sophomore, Samantha Workman, who was recently named a finalist in the National Association of Teachers

of Singing Colorado/Wyoming Student Singing Competition. Samantha competed in both the Classical and Musical Theater divisions and was one of only two students to be named a finalist in both highly competitive divisions. She went on to win 2nd place in the Classical division and 3rd place in the Musical Theatre divisions! She will receive cash prizes and an award for both of her accomplishments.

The auditions are held every other year for students who study voice from NATS teachers throughout Colorado and Wyoming. Normally held in person, this year video submissions replaced live performances. Samantha has been studying voice with NATS member, Denise Stookesberry for the last two years, who encouraged her to enter both of the divisions. Samantha is also a member of EPHS Concert Choir and Major 13 and the daughter of Cory and Melinda Workman.

Tomorrow will be 76 years since VE day. How many of you remember it?

How many know what it is? It is the day we celebrate the victory in Europe of an exceedingly long grueling World War II. I remember my family rushing downtown to Canal St. in New Orleans to celebrate. Thousands of people were there just gathering in happiness and joy, smiles and tears. Trucks went by throwing empty shell cases and confetti.

Strangers were just hugging one another.

Yes, I am old enough to know how it was during that war.

Today, we are so fortunate. Most do not even know about food rationing, stretching bandages, gas ratioing or gold stars in windows. I sometimes feel guilty giving recipes that were un-doable or unheard of in my childhood. Meat and fats and sugar were commodities that were often so scare they were not on the dinner table. I can remember as a small child being sent to the butcher to wait in line for a possible meat shipment. One dish my mother often prepared still sticks in my memory. She would make boiled egg stew. Ugh! This consisted of red gravy with boiled eggs served over rice. I can still see those eggs floating around in that red gravy. But we never went hungry, and my Mother made do with whatever she could obtain. A big deal was when Daddy brought home fish caught from the Mississippi or was allotted a large can of Spam because of his job. He was in the Martine Commission supervising the building of Liberty boats and Higgins’s landing crafts. Sometimes a shipment was damaged, so we got the Spam or some fruit or raw sugar. Guess we were the lucky ones after all.* With all of that said, I am going to give y’all a recipe with sugar and meat! I served this the other night to some Mah Jongg friends. They asked me to put the recipe in the paper.

Chicken Sliders with coleslaw Makes 12-16 depending on how much you put on each sandwich 2 lbs. of boneless chicken breast (I had chicken breast w/bones that weigh a little more.)

1 ½ cup water 1/3 cup brown sugar 2 tbs. salt 1 tbs. liquid smoke ½ tsp. dried thyme Coleslaw 1/3 cup liquid smoke 1 ½ cup choice of bar-b-que sauce Slider buns Make marinade, keep 1 cup reserved.

Place chicken and marinade in large bowl or plastic bag. Place in refrigerator for 10-18 hours. I did overnight. Drain chicken and discard juice. Place chicken and reserved cup of marinade in slow cooker for 3-4 hours (I did 3 ½). Cool and shred.

Mix chicken with 1/3 cup liquid smoke and bar-b-que sauce.

Heat and then place on heated buns.

Now add the coleslaw of your choice.

I used Sweet Baby Ray’s barbecue sauce. That was tasty but I think I will use a smokier sauce next time as my slaw was sweet. But I heard no complaints from the “peanut gallery,” just munching. *A footnote about the ship production in New Orleans. It is a fact that the invasion of Normandy would not have been possible without the Higgin’s landing boats or the many Liberty ships produced in record time in our shipyards of Southern Louisiana. The Higgin’s boats were originally swamp duck boats that were refitted, refined, and overhauled to become the famous landing boats you see during the Normandy and other landings of

Village Thrift Store Grants Nonprofits Access To New Funders Village Thrift Store has awarded the Estes Park Nonprofit Resource Center (EPNRC) $1,500 to purchase a one-year subscription to a robust grantseeking database called Foundation Directory Online. The database is a tool that allows for detailed searches to locate funding that matches mission, services, and implementation. It connects local nonprofits to corporate, federal, and foundation funding opportunities. The ability to cast a wider net for funding opportunities is important; there are over 70 nonprofits in Estes Park competing for individual donations from a very giving—yet finite—pool of donors. This grant allows EPNRC to offer this resource for free to our nonprofit partners. This grantseeking tool will offer opportunities to grow or implement new programs they may not have previously been able to afford.

One example of how this search engine might be of service: a nonprofit located in Estes Park that serves meals to senior citizens can search for funding by popu-

lation served (senior citizens), geographic location (CO, USA, Larimer County), service (food access/food insecurity), or the amount requested (funding needed). EPNRC has already held a Lunch & Learn program to introduce this tool to nonprofits, 1:1 consultations to support individual grantseeking needs are always available. Nonprofits are already making use of the database and EPNRC is excited to see the increase in grant and/or foundation funding for local Estes Valley nonprofit organizations.

“WANNA GET AWAY?”

A young police recruit was taking his final exam for the police academy. He read the following question on the exam paper: “You are on patrol in the outer city when an explosion occurs in a gas main in a nearby street. On investigation you find that a large hole has been blown in the footpath and there is an overturned van nearby. Inside the van there is a strong smell of alcohol. Both occupants—a man and woman—are injured. You immediately recognize the woman as the wife of your Chief of Police, who is presently away for training. A passing motorist stops to offer his assistance and you recognize him as a man currently wanted for armed robbery. Suddenly a man runs up shouting that his wife is expecting a baby in a nearby house and that the explosion has made the birth imminent. Another man is crying for help, having been blown in the adjacent canal by the explosion, and he cannot swim.” The examination question concludes with: “Describe in a few words what actions you would take?” The young man thought for a moment, picked up his pen, and wrote: “I would take off my uniform and mingle with the crowd.”

Since I am the father of two police officers and often hear about ‘their day’… one’s week recently demanding 86 hours on the job investigating the King Soopers’ shooting… I know that this scenario is not too far fletched. Many of our officers, and other ‘first responders’ are faced with a multiple of things at the same time and have to make immediate decisions that will impact lives of those involved, and decisions that will often be criticized by people who have little perception about how quickly some dire decisions must be made. It is little wonder that some choose to ‘take off their uniforms’ and mingle with the crowd…leaving a dwindling number of personnel to make those critical decisions and take those crucial actions.

However, that is not the primary purpose for this article. This week millions will be celebrating ‘Mothers’ Day’… and rightly so. And a similar scenario of crucial, demanding, decision-making and action-taking, is one that has been faced by these wonderful people many times in their lives. Most mothers see their lives as being an almost endless role of juggling five or six balls at one time while balancing a jug of water on their heads. And when the pressure gets too much, most have wanted… on occasion…to give up, take off their ‘mother’s uniform’ and ‘mingle with the crowd’. We’ve all seen the automobile commercial where a mother drops off the kids and husband and parks her car, locks the doors, leans the car seat back and gets a well-deserved few minutes of ‘R and R’. I’m sure that many of them feel like they face many ‘critiques’ like those in law enforcement, and find that much of it is less than kind…and often issued by people who, themselves’ have never ‘worn the uniform’. Hopefully, all of us who have those duty-bound and faithful mothers will share a great deal of ‘’thanksgiving’ this ‘Mothers’ Day’ to those who sacrifice so much for those under their care. Send that card, make that phone call, bring that flower by, and tell these often ‘unsung heroes’ how much you have been blessed by their often draining, but always faithful, service to those raised under their care.

There is one special segment of mothers that we often overlook for their sacrificial efforts. We are told that in 88% of single-parent families, the mother is that parent. So many such women are faced with all the feeding, training, disciplining, and nurturing of those children, as well as, in many cases, having to hold down some type of job so as to bring in money that is needed to support the needs of the family. I’m sure there are many times when they long to ‘take off their uniform’ and ‘mingle with the crowd’…but they don’t, and millions of young children grow up to be responsible adults, because their ‘hero’ didn’t abandon them. If any of you are reading this, please know that we are honoring you for your dedicated service.

To you, and all mothers, ‘Happy Mothers’ Day!” May God richly bless all who resist the temptation to ‘take off the uniform’ and ‘mingle with the crowd’!’

A Mother Like None Other

A very special day is coming in less than 72 hours. Yes, it’s Mother’s Day! I know many of you have fond memories of the special ladies that God chose to bring you into the world, so make sure to set aside some time to reflect on the good ole’ days and be grateful.

Almost 20 years I wrote out a few notes in my journal about memories of my Mom. I have discovered that we many of us will not remember everything people have said, but we will remember how they made us feel.

Here are a few things I remember about my Mom from my earliest memories through college graduation.

I always like going places with my Mom, because she is generous with everything God has given her. Her words, possessions, money, and love. I just feel good inside when I’m around her.

She was the one who would mentor young ladies in our church and it seemed like she was always helping with their kids so the young mothers could take a break.

She made decisions based on her heart and not her pocket book. In fact there were several occasions when she would give up her last few dollars to someone in need rather than spend it on herself.

She sent special notes to me, prepared delicious meals, purchased items that were on my wish list, and spent time

learning about the things that I was interested in. She constantly prayed for me and while in college would write me to let me know she was thinking of me.

I felt special whenever I showed up at her work place. She would stop whatever she was doing and introduced me to her office staff. She would get me a snack or drink from the vending machine and spend time visiting with me as long as I was there. People knew I was a special person in her life.

Whenever I would come home from college (before cell phones) my Mom would be waiting anx anxiously for my arrival.

When I pulled into the drive driveway I would notice her in the kitchen window looking out for me. Once she spotted me she would make her way out to the car to welcome me home. She was prepared for my arrival and even though the time was short, she made it extra special for me.

When it came time to head back to school she would walk me to my car, give me hugs and kisses, and tell me she was proud of me and that she loved me.

Not long after college, my wife and I were blessed with our first son. I have had the privilege of watching Deborah express the same love for our three boys.

Mothers are truly a gift from the Lord, so let’s plan to celebrate them this coming Sunday.

May 12, 1951 to May 12, 2021 Bob and Ann Kingswood, residents of Estes Park since 1977, want to share their joy as they celebrate their 70th Wedding Anniversary. They met in high school in Northern Arkansas where each of their parents had moved, Bob from Glenview, Illinois and Ann from Des

Moines, Iowa.

Bob and Ann are blessed with four children: Steve of Boulder, Bob of Estes Park, Mike of Estes Park and Sue of Port Orchard, Washington as well as eight grandchildren ranging in age from 20 to 36 years and three great-grandchildren.

At EPHS, Lexi is in band and choir.

She throws discus and shot put in track and field and is on the swimming team.

Her favorite class is Tech 1 because she enjoys the lessons they offer in that class. She earned her varsity letter for swimming after her team went to state this past season.

Outside of school, Lexi said, “I like to draw, sing and play the guitar and piano.” She used to be a ski racer and has an older brother who graduated from Estes Park High School last year. She currently works at Ride-A-Kart.

When asked what her favorite uplifting quote is, she answered,“You may not realize when it happens, but a kick in the teeth may be the best thing in the world for you” by Walt Disney. She said, “I don’t really know it if is uplifting, but it is my favorite quote. I have made a lot of mistakes in my life and have learned from most of them. I am very thankful for those lessons.”

Five Fun Facts About… The Hooded Warbler By: Dawn Wilson

This week’s featured animal is a rare one for Estes Park, the hooded warbler. I recently had a very unexpected sighting of one near Lake Estes. There was no doubt what I saw was a hooded warbler. Even though I had only previously seen one, and that was in its more natural region of Louisiana, the very distinct appearance of this small songbird was undeniable. Here are some fun facts about this unique looking bird.

1. The scientific name for the hooded warbler is Setophaga citrina. Citrina is Latin for citrine, and refers to anything similar to the bright yellow of a lemon, such as the dazzling yellow feathers of the hooded warbler.

2. Studies have shown that the hooded warbler is extremely territorial of its winter habitat, and male and female hooded warblers use different winter habitats with females in scrubby forest and males in mature forest.

3. The hooded warbler is named for its distinct black hood and contrasting yellow face.

4. Like many songbirds, the female hooded warbler has duller yellow feathers to help with camouflage. Females also lack the black hood.

5. The typical range of the hooded warbler in summer is from Wisconsin, Iowa, Michigan, and southern New England south to the Gulf Coast and northern Florida. It spends its winters in the tropics of southern Mexico, the West Indies,

The hooded warbler is an extremely rare bird to find in Estes Park. A summer resident of the forests of the eastern U.S., this little guy was seen in some willows while waiting out an approaching spring snowstorm.

The Rotary Duck Race proved for the second year that a pandemic could not dampen the community spirit that propels the 33-year-old event. Because a record number of ducks were adopted, 7,198 to be exact, the 65 Participating Organizations will receive a projected $118,579 to shore up their budgets and continue their important work in the Estes Valley.

The May 1 event got an early start with a breakfast at The Egg of Estes for Duck Race Committee volunteers, followed by the Estes Park Running Club’s Duck Waddle 5K on the scenic Lake Estes Trail. Beginning at noon, programming was live-streamed from The Estes Valley Community Center’s Lazy River and viewed on YouTube, Facebook and TDS Channel 8/108 - The Rocky Mountain Channel. A Pre-Flight Show featured performances by singer/songwriter Cowboy Brad Fitch and Ballet Renaissance. Kurtis Kelly and Scott Thompson served as emcees and provided lively commentary as Major Sponsor and little race ducks navigated the current of The Lazy River. Personnel from the Estes Valley Fire Protection District, Glen

Haven Area Volunteer Fire Department and Pinewood Springs Fire Protection District represented first responders that were honored this year for their heroic efforts during the recent wildfires.

They participated in the duck drop and shared a timely message about wildfire preparedness.

“This year’s 33rd Rotary Duck Race allows us to send vital support to 65 participating non-profits as summer begins,” he added.

Looking ahead to 2022, the Rotary Duck Race Committee is anticipating a return to the traditional format, with ducks racing on the Fall River from Nicky’s to Riverside Plaza. During 2020 and 2021, the race occurred indoors and without spectators, for the safety of race fans and volunteers.

One former Big Duck said the 2021 race “proved its mettle and staying power for this community by hanging in there for the long haul and adapting to a worldwide pandemic. The fact that the Duck Race is standing strong and ready to go back to the river shows its important value to the community because people show up to support it no matter what.”

Don Widrig, volunteer since 2002 who wrote the 41,000 lines computer code that runs all aspects of the race added his praise, “I rank this as the best race that I have ever participated in.”

Since its inception in 1989, the Duck Race has distributed $2.9 million to various Participating Organizations.

Largest Solar Project To Serve Northern Colorado Communities Proposed Platte River Power Authority and 174 Power Global (174PG), through their subsidiary BHS Solar, LLC, initiated the permitting process with Weld County planners to consider a utility scale solar generating installation.

The proposed Black Hollow Solar project, if approved by Weld County planners and commissioners, will be located northeast of Black Hollow Reservoir.

The project will span between 1,000 and 1,400 acres, with final location and layout being determined through a review of physical, environmental and land-use constraints and feedback from numerous stakeholders, including neighbors, state agencies and County leaders.

When complete, the Black Hollow Solar project will deliver approximately 355,000 megawatt- hours (MWh) of energy to Platte River’s system each year, enough to power approximately 43,000 homes. Energy from the project will replace output from Platte River’s share of the coal- fired Craig Unit 1, which will retire from service in 2025.

“The addition of the Black Hollow Solar project will take us approximately halfway toward our goal of providing 100% noncarbon energy,” said Jason Frisbie, general manager and CEO of Platte River. “This is one of many significant steps we’re taking to achieve our Resource Diversification Policy and we’re excited to move forward with construction.”

An estimated 320 full-time workers will

be on the job throughout the construction period and up to 450 during the 12 to 14-month peak construction period.

Additionally, eight to 10 permanent positions will be needed to manage the solar farm when operational. Tax revenues, payments to landowners and

local purchases of supplies and services will also contribute to Weld County’s economy.

“A project of this size and scope illustrates Weld County’s support of a diversified energy economy,” said Rich Werner, CEO of Upstate Colorado.

“Both traditional and renewable energies support the growth of our population and the regional economy, and we look forward to working with our part-

commercial operation in March, the 150 MW Black Hollow Solar project will elevate Platte River’s solar generating capacity to more than 200 MW. May Is Mental Health Awareness Month; Impacts Of COVID-19 On Mental Health Recognizing May as National Mental Health Awareness Month is particularly important this year as the impacts on mental health from COVID-19 linger, raising awareness of mental health and its effect on the well-being of individuals, families, and communities.

The Board of Larimer County Commissioners today proclaimed May as National Mental Health Awareness Month in Larimer County.

"It is critical that we keep Mental Health at the forefront of our conversations. Talking about it is one of the best ways to reduce the stigma around it and encourage people to seek help before a crisis hits," said Larimer County Director of Behavioral Health Services Laurie Stolen.

A study conducted by Mental Health America in 2020 highlights the connection between the pandemic and mental health.

Key findings from the study show that the number of people looking for help with anxiety and depression has skyrocketed, more people are reporting frequent thoughts of suicide and self-harm, and young people are struggling the most with their mental health.

Mental Health America also collects state-by-state mental health data to create state rankings. The state rankings for 2020 show that 20% of Coloradans live with mental illness and that Colorado ranks 43rd out of 50 states with a higher

prevalence of mental health issues and lower rates of access to care for adults “We know that this issue touches all of us in our lives, and it is important for us to address this and reduce the stigma and see what we can do to raise awareness with our youth,” said Larimer County Commissioner Jody ShadduckMcNally.

Larimer County continues to advance mental health initiatives to support the mental and behavioral wellbeing of county residents. In June, Behavioral Health Services will announce its annual behavioral health grant funding available to area organizations through the Impact Fund Grant Program.

Meanwhile, work continues on the new behavioral health facility scheduled to open in early 2023, expanding the availability of acute behavioral health services to county residents.

Mental Health Awareness Month has been observed in May in the United States since 1949 to educate communities about psychological disorders while reducing the stigma around mental health.

The Town of Estes Park Utilities Department and the Estes Valley Watershed Coalition have teamed up to offer 25 lucky households free low-flow shower heads.

April 22 was Earth Day, but the EVWC has named April as Earth Month, focusing on water as one of our most important natural resources. Our Wandering Wildlife Society, which offers monthly Wildlife Talks, invited speakers from Northern Water and Colorado Rural Water Association to discuss water on Earth Day. Their online presentation illustrated how water flows to and from Estes Park to reservoirs serving front range communities, with particular focus on how wildfires complicate water delivery.

Thanks to support from EP News and a donation of a rain barrel kit from ACE Hardware, Estes Valley Watershed Coalition has collected other water-savings devices, such as garden driplines, which will be given away to Estes residents in early May. And now, the Town of Estes Park Utilities Department has

joined the effort by offering 25 free low-flow showerheads. How will these showerheads help? Showering accounts for 17% of all indoor water use. As we shower, we use 2.5 gallons per minute!

Low-flow showerheads could save as much as 2,700 gallons per year, which will save water, energy (used to heat the water), and money!

Interested residents must register for the Earth Day drawing or the free showerheads at www.EVWatershed.org/earthday-2021. Winners will be chosen by Bubba the Bear, the EVWC Mascot.

(We all know bears can’t read, so the Vice President of the coalition will read the names of all the winners.) Winners will be announced in early May, so watch for your names in EP News and on our website.

Why is water so important? The amount of water on Earth is finite. But Earth’s population continues to grow.

We can’t create new water, so we must use it carefully, guarding against wasting it and polluting it. So, sing while you shower, but make it a quick song.

Award-Winning Author And Photographer Erik Stensland Takes Us On A Fresh Journey Of Self-Discovery

Driven to leave goodness in his wake, Erik Stensland seems to always have his hands busy. After working for more than a decade in the Balkan Peninsula where he was involved in job creation programs and refugee work, in 2004 Erik and his wife Joanna moved to Estes Park on the edge of Rocky Mountain National Park. Erik has since become a wellknown photographer specializing in Rocky Mountain National Park. He has opened several galleries of his work, started a publishing business, written 8 books, and created an international nonprofit organization with members in 67 countries.

When he’s not working on one of his projects, he’s out in the mountains of Rocky Mountain National Park heading in the opposite direction of the crowds as he looks for quiet trails and beautiful scenes. He says that beauty can often be found in the most unusual places, and often go unnoticed by the crowds. Erik has spent time in every corner of the park, but you may not see him as he is often out at unusual hours trying to catch the first and last light of the day.

Over these years in the mountains, Erik’s spent a lot of time reflecting on life and wondering how we can live lives that are meaningful. This has led to him sitting on boulders scribbling away, trying to tie those thoughts down with words.

At the end of 2017, Erik released a book of these musings called Whispers in the Wilderness. “I had no idea what people would think of it. It was actually really scary to share my internal thoughts so

openly.” His fears proved unfounded as Whispers went on to win four national awards including the prestigious Benjamin Franklin Award from the Independent Book Publishers Association for best inspirational book of the year.

This week Erik is releasing the muchanticipated follow-up book to Whispers in the Wilderness titled, The Journey Beyond: Learning to Live Beautifully in a Troubled World. It is a stunning book filled with his photos from across the world as well as meditations on our relationship with ourselves, each other, and our planet. He recently received endorsements of his new book from wellknown writers, Philip Yancey and

Richard Rohr.

With chapter titles like, “Flammable Indignation”, “Effective Resistance” and “Aspire to Gentleness”, he’s not taking us along the easy path, but up a steep one into places that are not always comfortable. Yet as he says, “The hard paths are often the ones with the greatest reward.”

The path to wholeness always begins with an honest look within.

Erik helps us revel in the wonder of nature but not without also challenging us and encouraging us to do more than simply enjoy its beauty. This is what he did in 2019 when he helped start an organization called “Nature First” which

empowers photographers to be ambassadors for the natural world. Today, Erik is involved in the leadership of this organization and its activities across the globe.

Do not be content to watch the earth from a distance. Feel it, smell it, hear it, embrace it. This is the world that you are a part of. This is the world you come from. This is the world we must all connect with again.

Maximizing Multiple Covid-19 Relief Programs By: Paul F. Mueller, CPA

During the past 14 months, Congress has passed numerous Covid-19 relief programs to support businesses, employees and individuals impacted by the pandemic. It can be hard to keep up since some of these programs overlap, have been extended and the rules keep changing.

In this article, I will share strategies for managing the interplay between the two biggest programs - PPP Loans and the Employee Retention Tax Credit (ERTC).

As part of the Covid Relief Bill enacted on December 27, 2020, and the American Rescue Plan Act enacted on March 11, 2021, Congress made big changes to the ERTC: • First, the ineligibility to PPP Loan borrowers was retroactively eliminated.

That means PPP Loan borrowers can now go back and amend their payroll tax filings for 2020 to claim refunds to the extent they qualified for the ERTC during 2020. So far this year, we have helped clients file nearly $1.5 million in refund claims for 2020.

• Second, Congress extended the ERTC through December 31, 2021 and significantly increased the benefit to as much as $28,000 per employee.

How do I qualify for the ERTC? For 2020, Employers were eligible to claim the ERTC if either of these two things happened: 1. Your operations were fully or partially suspended due to a COVID-19related governmental order, or 2. You experienced a more than 50% reduction in gross receipts for one or more calendar quarters of 2020, as compared to 2019.

For 2021, Employers are eligible to claim the ERTC if any one of these three things happened: 1. Your operations were fully or partially suspended due to a COVID-19relatedgovernmental order; or

2. You experience a more than 20% reduction for one or more calendar quarters of 2021, as compared to 2019; or 3. 4th quarter 2020 gross receipts fell by more than 20% compared to the 4th quarter of 2019. This qualifies you to claim the ERTC for Q1 of 2021.

NOTE: You can also use this prior quarter rule throughout 2021 to qualify the succeeding quarter of 2021 for the ERTC. For example, comparing Q2 gross receipts for 2021 to Q2 2019 to see if there was a more than 20% reduction, which would then qualify you to claim the ERTC for Q3 of 2021.

How does a PPP Loan affect the ERTC? This is where things get complicated.

Both the PPP Loan and ERTC are payroll-based relief programs. In a nutshell, payroll plays a big part in achieving forgiveness of the PPP Loan, while the ERTC is based on a percentage of wages paid to employees.

In rolling out these programs, Congress said the same wages could not be used in forgiving the PPP Loan and in computing the ERTC. So how best to manage this interplay?

A Strategic Approach to Managing Wages in 2021 If your business received (or will receive) a PPP Loan this year under either (or both) of the First Draw and Second Draw programs, wages paid to your employees can help get 100% of the PPP Loan forgiven.

In computing the ERTC, eligible wages are limited to $10,000 per employee per quarter, and the credit rate is 70%. So, the maximum credit per employee per quarter is $7,000.

Because 100% is always better than 70%, consider the following steps to maximize your benefits from both programs: • Go the Distance - the Covered Period for your PPP Loan can be anywhere between 8 and 24 weeks. The expenses incurred during your chosen Covered Period will determine the forgiveness of your loan. If you are eligible for the ERTC, do not be in a hurry to apply for forgiveness. Generally, the longer your Covered Period, the more flexibility in using wages for both pro-

grams.

• Check the Rearview Mirror - If you have closed your books through March 31, 2021, you can look to see if there was a revenue decline large enough to make you eligible for the ERTC. If you are, then you are automatically eligible for the 2nd quarter, too. If you are not eligible, then you will want to consider dedicating those 1st quarter wages solely towards PPP loan forgiveness.

• Show Me the Money - if you did not receive a PPP Loan this year (and you do not intend to), there is nothing holding you back from claiming the ERTC if you are eligible.

If you were eligible for the ERTC during the 1st quarter of 2021 and you already filed your quarterly Form 941, be sure to file a Form 941-X to submit your refund claim.

This could produce a sizable refund or an over-payment you can apply to the 2nd quarter and reduce your upcoming payroll tax deposits.

• Manage Your Wages Like an Asset by now you know the wages you pay to your employees can help your PPP Loan get forgiven as well as generate generous payroll tax refunds. Just not the same wages at just the same time.

Assuming you incur enough non-pay-

roll costs, such as rent, utilities and mortgage interest during your PPP Loan Covered Period, you only need to apply just enough wages to equal 60% of your PPP Loan to have the loan fully forgiven tax-free. Being smart about applying your wages against your PPP Loan can reserve more wages eligible for the ERTC and produce greater tax refunds.

• There's No Tomorrow - oh yes there is when it comes to the

ERTC! Just like all the refund claims we are filing right now for the 2020 ERTC, you will have a chance to use hindsight later this year and claim the ERTC by filing amended payroll tax returns. For many PPP Loan borrowers, the maximum 24-week Covered Period will likely run out in August. That would be a great time to look back and evaluate the wages needed for forgiveness as well as the wages available to maximize those ERTC refund claims.

With a little foresight, a lot of hindsight and some strategic planning, you really can have it all!

Bernese Mountain Dog Club Of America In Estes Park May 9-15 The Bernese Mountain Dog Club of America (BMDCA) will host its 2021 National Specialty Dog Show in Estes Park May 9-15, 2021 at the Estes Park Events Complex.

Expect an influx of Bernese mountain dogs (and their owners, of course), who will be here to participate in competitions including agility, herding, scent-work and tracking. Event organizers anticipate 650 human attendees. The event itself is private, but dogs and owners will be out and about town during down time.

Visit Estes Park (VEP), the Town of Estes Park and the Estes Chamber of Commerce partnered to create a flyer that features special offers for show attendees from participating businesses to encourage them to go into town. I Believe We Can!

I believe we CAN. We can revolutionize the auto industry, design and produce viable electric vehicles for nearly all uses, and lead the American driver to not only accept but to value this new mode of transportation.

I believe we CAN. We can accept the fact that electric vehicles and reusable energy sources are worthwhile pursuing and that, despite the head-end investment, the long-term savings prove to be excellent bonus to the ecological advantages.

However, we need to go further – and I believe we CAN. I believe we can build a waste reduction system and a waste disposal system that eliminates short term singleuse; reuses, recycles, or composts all that can be redirected, and landfills only the bare minimum of essential but non-salvageable trash. I believe we CAN encourage, convince, or require the public to participate.

There are five public collection sites in Larimer County available to residents of the Estes Valley: the current Landfill Campus (LC), Timberline Recycling in Fort Collins (TR), Loveland Recycling Center (LRC), and 2 locations in Estes Park: the Transfer Station (TS) and the Residential Recycling Center (RRC).

Ecocycle (E), with collection yards spread throughout Boulder County also welcomes contributions from Estes.

Each of these locations has a different modus operandi (or “rules”), accepts and/or recycles different items, and charges differently for their services. Because they are supported by local tax base which does not include Estes – Timberline, Loveland, and Ecocycle do charge a small fee for extending service.

In addition to the public sites, there are 19 “Planet Partners” that collect specific items for reuse and/or recycle. These merchants and organizations will be referenced where appropriate as we delve

into the specifics for each category of recoverable waste over the next few weeks.

The Planet Partner list continually increases and is available at www.EstesRecycles.com I believe, with proper leadership, we CAN reform our wasteful ways. However, to curtail our current largess, we must begin where we are now, with the opportunities that currently exist. Although the field broadens every day, seven general categories are currently salvageable: glass, metal, electronics, paper, plastic, construction and demolition (C&D), and compostables.

In general: 1) Shape, size, and color can effect the viability of single stream recycling. This is one reason why so many collection yards have gone to source separated containers. The other common reason: Most MRFs (material recovery facilities) charge a significant fee to process single stream, whereas many pay for source separated recyclables. 2) Never put a plastic bag into a recycling container, except those designated for source separated plastic bags at Safeway and Country Market. 3) No liquids or food waste or grease of any kind should ever be placed in recycling bins! All recycling should be dry when placed in the bin. 4) If there is a viable recycling option located in the Estes Valley, that is my priority in detailing options. If there is not such an option, I will provide information on options in Larimer and Boulder Counties.

This information is worth keeping as a reference, and, to save space, will not reappear in the follow-up articles. Next week, we will begin to address the categories with glass and metal, to review our options and determine just what CAN be done.

Cameron Peak Fire Area Closure Update More trails impacted by the Cameron Peak Fire have opened following some additional assessment and repair work by U.S. Forest Service staff and volunteers.

The revised closure order opens the North Fork, Stormy Peaks, Mummy Pass and Emmaline Lake trails. It has also opened National Forest System land around Alexander Mountain and the CSU Mountain Campus. Visitors to the area are reminded there are safety hazards within burn areas to be aware of, including but not limited to, falling trees, flood risks, stump holes and rock fall danger.

Much of the area impacted by the fire remains closed for safety and natural resource protection until additional assessments can be done as the snow melts. Details of the latest closure and map are available on our website. Visitors should ensure they check this map before heading to the Canyon Lakes Ranger District to ensure the area they are planning to visit is open.

Crews are continually evaluating other areas as snow melt occurs at lower elevations. Forest Service staff and volunteer trail crews from the Poudre Wilderness Volunteers and Cameron Peak Nordic Rangers have worked hard in areas that are open. Two trail crews will be helping staff throughout the summer, along with additional support from partners and volunteers.

There are more than 120 miles of Forest Service trails within the Cameron Peak Fire perimeter and over 350 miles of Forest Service roads. Most areas will not be

safely accessible for evaluation until after the snow melts later this spring and summer. Many factors come into play when determining when an area can reopen.

Beyond the immediate risk of hazard trees, considerations need to be made for trail markers, erosion control and trail stabilization issues, damaged infrastructure like bridges, and safety signage. The district is hopeful more areas will open this summer, but this will be heavily dependent on impacts from spring runoff.

We know many people would like to help with recovery efforts on the Forest.

The District is fortunate to have many wonderful organizations we work with regularly and will be integral to our recovery efforts. The Wildlands Restoration Volunteers and Poudre Wilderness Volunteers plan to hold some public events that will be available on their websites this upcoming season.

If visiting the Canyon Lakes Ranger District, please note many facilities and roads remain seasonally closed until summer. Check our road status page for the latest information. If you need ideas on other locations to recreate, please check our website. Be sure to check local weather information and monitor for the risk of flooding in burned areas.

As visitors start to make plans for future recreational outings, they should expect to find a changed landscape, with the potential for both long- and short-term closures, as well as potential hazards. Fire recovery information is available at www.fs.usda.gov.

Now in 2021, the anticipation is that spring will bring fresh green meadows, lots of wildflowers, and the return of insects and birds into the burn areas. But what will happen with the larger mammals? How will these meadows look over time? What will be the “new normal” in Rocky Mountain National Park?

On Friday, May 14, from 7 to 8:30 p.m., Dawn Wilson will lead a photo-presentation titled “Rocky Mountain National Park: Before and After the 2020 Wildfire Season.” The program is hosted by the Estes Valley Library and will take

Estes Valley Chamber Singers In Concert Looking for a live concert of choral music from the Estes Valley Chamber Singers? Then join them on Sunday, May 16th for their spring concert to be held at Rinn United Methodist Church in Fredrick. This will be the Singers second concert since the pandemic shutdown over a year ago. Their Christmas concert was a great success with 50 people inperson and over 300 watching over the Internet.

Like the Christmas concert, this concert will be free of charge and a gift to all those who have dearly missed live, inperson, concerts. However, because of remaining restrictions on the number of

people allowed to gather, reservations will need to be made. Please call 970342-9871 for reservations. Seating is limited to 80, so call as soon as possible to assure a seat.

As is always the case with the Chamber Singers concerts, this program will be widely varied. The program opens with Puccini’s “Kyrie” from his Messa di Gloria. This wonderful mass was written when Puccini was only 18 years old, and shows hints of where this musical master is going. Craig Courtney’s “Sanctus” follows the Kyrie. This six part a cappella composition written in 2001, is a neo-romantic piece and is a nice followTrio Scott Anderson, Annette Dechant and Michelle Gergen-Wisner.

Finishing the first section of the concert will be Karl Jenkins’ “Pie Jesu” from his mass. Jenkins, a Welsh composer, is one of the most performed composers in the last twenty years. The “Pie Jesu” text has motivated many composers to write some of the most beautiful music for soloists, choirs and orchestras. This piece features our two sopranos, Kelly Anderson and Terry Van Ryn and is accompanied by the Singers’ pianist, Michelle Gergen-Wisner and clarinetist, Annette Dechant.

Two premieres will be presented in this concert, both written by the “Singers” Founder and Artistic Director, Richard Dixon. The first of these pieces is a work for piano and dedicated to Michelle; “They’ll Know We Are Christians.”

Dixon has more than one hundred and seventy compositions in print. He has written for solo voice, piano, organ, brass and string ensembles, and band and orchestra. His music is performed throughout the United States and twenty-three countries around the world.

The next three pieces come from three advocate for Estes Valley Crisis Advoof the leading American composers of cate. Funding for the books has been choral music in the middle 20th century; made possible by support from the Estes Lauridsen’s “Sure on This Shining Night, Valley Library Friends & Foundation.

“Set Boundaries, Find Peace”: Book Discussion On May 18 Estes Valley Crisis Advocates and the Estes Valley Library are co-hosting a monthly book discussion series. This month’s featured book is “Set Boundaries, Find Peace” by Nedra Glover Tawwab. Those who register will receive a complimentary copy of the book while supplies last.

The following piece, however, is an example of the compositional style found in the music of the most important composers of that period. “The Candle,” by Richard Dixon, is the second of the premiere pieces to be heard in this concert. It was written at the request of Scott Anderson after he and two other musicians had just performed Benjamin Britten’s Canticle “Still Falls the Rain” for tenor, French horn and piano. After searching for some time to find another piece for the same voicing—and finding none—Scott turned to Dixon to write one. Very few people in Estes have ever heard music of this kind, which has been very challenging for the musicians, but also very rewarding. Performing this piece are, Scott Andersontenor; Annette Dechant-clarinet; and Michelle Gergen-Wisner-piano.

The concert comes to a close with a folk song and three spirituals; “Go ‘Way From My Window” is followed by “Deep River,” “We Shall Walk Through the Valley,” and closes with “Ain’t Got Time To Die.” Save Sunday, May 16th at 2:00 p.m. for the Estes Valley Chamber Singers Spring Concert. As President of the Lake Estes Men’s Golf Club, I am excited about the upcoming 2021 season. Although excited, I’m also concerned and need your help.

Over the years our membership has declined. I’m asking each of you to talk to you friends and neighbors, players you meet on the 9 hole course, the 18 hole course and people walking down the street! Tell them about our Lake Estes Men’s Golf Club and ask them to join us on Mondays at the 9-hole course. You will find us very laid back, easy to join and just wanting to have fun playing the game we all love. No cliques, no pressure, just fun!

Guests are allowed to play up to two times without paying the $30.00 annual membership fee. This allows potential members to know just how much fun it is to play and how they have a multitude of ways to win each Monday. Talk it up!

Members may choose to play from White Tees or Red Tees. Once selected, all handicaps are based on Monday LEMGC play only, so no matter which tees you prefer to play handicaps will level out the playing field.

Weekly entry fee is only $5.00 and we pay it all back in prizes. The 2021 season will begin Monday, May 17th. Except as

noted below, play will occur each Monday with the first tee time at 8:00 a.m.

A Voice That Resonates 100 Years Later To The Editor: Mary White, in jodhpurs with a red hair ribbon accenting her long braid, roamed the Moraine Park area from 1912 to 1920 from the home base of her family’s cabin on what is now Bear Lake Road.

She rented burros, explored the area on foot and on horseback and spent hours at the YMCA camp. At 14, she followed a brother and his friend to the summit of Longs Peak and at 15 she begrudgingly attended a dance at Steads with her brother as her escort. At 16, she died in a horse accident in her hometown of Emporia, Kansas.

Her father, Kansas newspaperman William Allen White, felt the need to share the death of his exuberant, intelligent, fun-loving daughter, so on the

Mary White would no doubt have celebrated her 17th birthday in Moraine Park had she not died nearly a month prior. She loved her times spent in Colorado, designing her room in her family’s newly remodeled home to resemble the great room of their Moraine Park cabin. She left behind numerous cartoons and scrapbooks that grew from her time in the area. She is a personality not to be forgotten in Estes Park history. As long as young people’s lives senselessly end and those who love them mourn, “Mary White” continues to speak, 100 years later.

Kimber Vernon Barrier Kimber Vernon Barrier passed away on April 27, 2021 in Fort Collins, CO. He was born June 21, 1941 in Oswego, Kansas.

His parents, Max and Helen Barrier preceded him in death.

He is survived by his wife, Patte, of 58 years; a daughter Kristen (Barry) Hand, three grandchildren, Ben, Max and Madison; a son, Kevin (Amy) Barrier and three grandchildren, Jack, Emily and Tia. He also leaves his sister, Paroda (Carrol) Rainwater; and sister-inlaw, Virginia (Ken) Sherwood; his niece, Pamela (Phil) Conlon, Abby, Tim and Penny; nephews, Jeremy Sherwood, Jeff (Laura) Rainwater, Emma, as well as several cousins and their families.

Kim graduated from high school in Pleasanton, Kansas and Colorado State University in Fort Collins, CO. He spent his career at IBM in Boulder, CO. He was an ordained Elder serving on the board of Westview Presbyte-

rian Church in Longmont and the Community Church of the Rockies in Estes Park. He served as a Trustee at the Berthoud Presbyterian Church in Berthoud, CO. He was a member of the Estes Valley Land Trust and noon Rotary Club of Estes Park where he was a Paul Harris Fellow. After his retirement, he worked as a Real Estate consultant and builder. Spending time with his family was his greatest joy, preferably somewhere in the mountains. His memorial service will be May 11, 2021 at 2:00 p.m. at the Allnutt Drake Chapel in Fort Collins, CO. and the inurnment will be in Labette, KS. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Community Church of the Rockies in Estes Park or Estes Valley Land Trust Perpetuity Fund. Some Larimer County property owners have received what appears to be phony notices via U.S. Mail stating a notice has been issued against the recipient because of a tax debt.

The letter further states Federal Tax Authorities use warrants in collection action and will garnish wages, bank accounts, seize property or seize federal tax refunds, and create a property lien to pay the debt. The recipient is told to call a toll-free number --- 1 [800] 207- 6048 --- to avoid enforcement.

Larimer County Treasurer and Public Trustee Irene Josey said the letter is very similar to a scam letter sent to some Larimer County residents last year, and to disregard the notice and also contact local law enforcement.

Required minimum qualifications include a high school diploma or general education degree (GED). Mechanical aptitude and physical ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
