Annual Striping Project Begins In Two Weeks

From approximately May 1 through May 17, weather permitting (dates may be extended due to weather), the Town of Estes Park and its contractor will be repainting curbs in the downtown area, center lines, edge lines, and thermoplastic symbols on Townowned roadways. Moving lane closures will be necessary during painting. Motorists are advised to drive with caution in the areas where crews are working. Signs will be posted to identify areas of wet paint. Pedestrians are advised to watch for wet yellow and red paint on downtown curbs.

The Estes Valley’s Children And Those Who Nurture Them By: Assistant Town Administrator Travis Machalek

Each year the Town of Estes Park recognizes April as the Month of the Young Child in order to bring attention to the impor- Travis Machalek tance and value of children in our community. This recognition is marked with a proclamation by the Mayor and educational efforts by Estes Valley Investment in Childhood Success (EVICS). This year, I want to take the opportunity to reflect on the importance of children – the youngest residents of our valley.

Children play a vital role in any vibrant community. Observing the world through a child’s curious eyes allows us to continue growing as adults. We can be inspired by their eagerness to learn and experience their world – which is largely their hometown in the early years. They are the embodiment of the next generation -- the future of a place.

Though not all the children who grow up here will stay here throughout their lives, those who do will have a valuable perspective on what makes Estes Park unique and what makes it great. They will tell the story of Estes Park to the generations that follow.

Just as children are important for our community, so is our community important to the development of our youth. A strong network of family, friends, neighbors and caregivers is vital to the growth and wellbeing of our kids. These relationships with nurtur-

ing adults are especially critical during their early development. During their first years we can see the formation of their beliefs about learning, problemsolving and personal capabilities.

At the most basic level, an investment in children is an investment in the future of our community, and our society. They will be our business owners, firefighters, teachers, electrical line workers, water treatment professionals, doctors, nurses and more.

Their leadership, wages and tax contributions will help support the systems that we all rely upon, including the functions of our Town government. It is critical that they be set up for success in these endeavors by a childhood filled with rich, positive experiences.

We are fortunate in Estes Park to have numerous, passionate individuals and groups working to enhance the lives of young children in our community. The Estes Park School District, EVICS, Estes Early Childhood Education, the Estes Park Education Foundation, Partners Mentoring Youth, and the Learning Place are just some of the of the many organizations that dedicate staff and volunteer time to making Estes Park a great place to grow up. We at the Town, want to thank these people for their vision and for nurturing our children.

Whether we connect with children as family, friends, neighbors, volunteers or just by virtue of having been one at some point in our lives, I think we can all appreciate their value and the need to nurture their success and happiness.

The future of our community depends on them and the quality of the early childhood experiences available to them in our community and beyond.

Next Drug Collection Scheduled For April 27 Police encourage safe disposal of unwanted prescription and over-thecounter drugs On Saturday, April 27, from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. the Town of Estes Park Police Department will offer Estes Park’s Drug Take Back Day to collect unused, unwanted and expired prescription and over-the-counter drugs for safe disposal — no questions asked. “Now is a good time to mark your calendar and start collecting everything you want to get out of the medicine cabinet,” commented Officer Gregg Filsinger, who manages this free service for the community. The collection will be held in front of Rocky Mountain Pharmacy, located at 455 East Wonderview Ave. in Upper Stanley Village. Police officers will collect the drugs, which will remain in the custody of law enforcement officers until they can be incinerated.

Estes Park’s Drug Take Back Day is part of the Drug Enforcement Administration’s national campaign to provide a safe way for people to empty their medicine cabinets of unwanted and potentially harmful prescription drugs. To find participating collection sites in other communities, visit www.dea.gov.

Misused and abused prescription

drugs containing controlled substances can lead to cases of accidental poisoning, overdose and addiction. The most recent National Survey on Drug Use and Health indicates that prescription medicines are the most abused drugs by Americans, next to marijuana. Seven of the 10 drugs most commonly abused by teenagers are prescription medicines and three quarters of teen prescription drug abusers obtain the drugs from family and friends — often from a home medicine cabinet. Ridding homes of these substances greatly reduces the potential for abuse and accidental poisoning.

Items which cannot be accepted at the Drug Take Back Day collection sites are needles and sharps, mercury thermometers, oxygen containers, chemotherapy/radioactive substances, pressurized canisters, marijuana and illicit drugs. The Estes Park Police Department is no longer able to accept drugs outside of the Drug Take Back Event.

Meet Future K9 Handler, r r, Off f icer Mikel Otazua ff Police Officer Estes Park Police Officer Mikel Otazua has been selected to be the very first K9 handler for the Estes Park Police Department. He has been employed with the Estes Park Police Department since May of 2016.

Mikel Otazua was born in Caracas, Venezuela. At the age of six, he moved to Dallas, Texas with his family.

Mikel's passion for dogs began around this time when his family rescued their first dog, a German Shepard named Dollar. Mikel was often found playing with Dollar and teaching him simple tricks at home.

Mikel and his family then moved to Miami, Florida in June of 2006. After graduating high school, Mikel attended MiamiDade Community College. He transferred to Florida International University where he studied Criminal Justice.

Mikel has a passion for dogs. While in Miami, Mikel's family adopted a French Mastiff named Hooch who was named after the dog in the 1989 movie, "Turner and Hooch." After moving out of the family home, Mikel fostered two Ameri-

can Pitbull Terriers from high-kill shelters. He fostered them until they found their forever homes. Mikel also fostered a sickly black lab puppy that he received from a friend who was not able to care for her. He nursed the puppy back to health and the puppy was adopted by a retired Miami-Dade Police K9 handler.

In January of 2015, Mikel moved to Denver, Colorado where he continued his education at the University of Colorado - Denver. Mikel then attended and completed a Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) Academy in Aurora, Colorado. He was hired by the Estes Park Police Department where he plans to work until his retirement.

Mikel's life-long career goal has been to become a K9 Handler in a small town.

He feels very fortunate to have been hired on by an excellent agency in such a supportive community.

Enjoy Exciting Activities And A Free Lunch At Annual Safety Fair May 11 ffeatured atured K9 unit demonstrations fe Kids and adults are invited to the annual Estes Park Public Safety Fair Saturday, May 11, sponsored by the Estes Park Police Department. This fun, family event takes place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Estes Park Events Complex, at 1125 Rooftop Way. Estes Park Police Officers will be serving free hamburgers, hot dogs, snacks and beverages donated by local businesses, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

For the 2019 Safety Fair, more than 20 regional public safety agencies will converge on Estes Park, bringing equipment and apparatus ranging from a bomb robot to medical evacuation helicopters, dive rescue apparatus and more. Agencies currently signed up

to participate include the Estes Valley Fire Protection District, Colorado Parks and Wildlife, Rocky Mountain National Park and Larimer County Sheriff.

The event will also highlight police K9 units this year. As the Estes Park Police Department fundraises to add a K9 unit, it has in-

f 's Offf f fvited the Larimer County Sheriff fice and Loveland Police Department K9 units to provide demonstrations.

Demonstrations take place at 10:30 a.m.,

11:30 a.m., 12:30 p.m., and 1:30 p.m. to show off the skills and benefits a K9 unit can bring to the community.

Local businesses have generously donated door prizes, including movie tickets, bowling games, and more.

Children can register to win one of four bikes to be given away at 1 p.m.

Police Chief Wes Kufeld stated "The Safety Fair has been a collaborative effort over the years to provide education to our citizens about the many services available in the Estes Valley. We are thankful to all of the volunteers, contributors and partnering agencies who make this event happen." Dreams Really Do Come True

By: Mary Mountain Note: The following describes how the storied Ivinson Mansion in Laramie, Wyoming, was saved and became the treasured Laramie Plains Museum that preserves important aspects of both Laramie’s and Wyoming’s history. The mission of the Laramie Plains Museum Association is similar to the current mission of the Historic Stanley Home Foundation which is to preserve F.O. and Flora Stanley’s historic home as a museum and education center.

Every time I enter the Laramie Plains Museum, Laramie’s extraordinary historic house museum to open exhibits for visiting publics to view Wyoming’s fascinating history, I am reminded of those who dreamed this dream more than 50 years ago. I am grateful for and inspired by each one of them.

In 1966 Laramie finally formed a Museum Association. Artifacts had been stored in boxes at the courthouse, in Woman’s Club members’ closets, and at City Hall. None of those were satisfactory places for the special history residents had sheltered as they dreamed of a museum for decades. The new Association used a member’s home to set up shop for a while, but the house, in the University District, was awkward for displays and parking.

The dreamers were still dreaming anyway: some of them saw the dilapidated historic mansion of pioneering citizens Edward and Jane Ivinson, and sighed that a full city block of Laramie’s history was to be razed for modern apartments and contractors’ purses. After its majestic 19th Century life as a Queen Anne Victorian, then its lively and poignant 40 years as a Girls School, the Church who owned it could no longer keep up with the needy historic property and it slowly descended into a decade of ruin. Passersby saw only a gutted shell of the former opulence. The dreamers, however, saw grandeur and accommodating spaces. They could actually picture history being told in this precious artifact of the early days.

They envisioned telling the story of how this railroad city came to life and thrived because of the unexpected English couple who arrived on the first train, built businesses and churches and this home, and ultimately developed this majestic property as a centerpiece to this town on the high plains of Wyoming.

As I see our docents tell the stories of our community with guided tours—from a personalized tour for just one, to 15 visitors or classroom students at a time—I know our dreamers, who held the first bake sale to raise funds and awareness, are smiling. 46 years ago, as longsuffering volunteers held their vision against the naysayers, moving artifacts into the barely alive Ivinson home, cleaning and salvaging so that history could be celebrated.

As one of those early fundraising mothers was approaching her 90th birthday, almost 40 years after helping save the historic property, she asked, “Did we do the right thing? Should we have saved the mansion or has it been an albatross around the necks of museum boards and small, almost-volunteer staffs, trying to keep it alive, restored, and promoting history?”

For our community and our state, they did the right thing. Our visitors, from all over the world, are most charmed that we can tell the family’s story as a backdrop to Laramie and Wyoming’s history. Our community loves and supports this historic property with events on the Ivinson property expected and renowned in the region.

We can’t imagine not having this showpiece of our community, attracting tourists, scholars, schools and new dreamers wanting to keep history alive and well.

Not only are those original dreamers smiling, but the Ivinsons who first envisioned a fine community as they stepped off that first train, must be happy that their home showcases the history that they helped to create.

This is the last week of National Poetry Month 2019. I will be wrapping up the month by hosting a small gathering of poetry aficionados on Sunday. Each of us will read or recite by heart (what great terminology!) a poem or two and meaningful discussion will ensue.

Several years back I tried growing this almost annual event by holding it at the library and inviting the public. Turnout was low, so I’ve returned to hosting a smaller get-together in my home. I’ll light candles, maybe have a fire in the fireplace, or maybe open the windows to welcome in the warm spring air. (Poet T.S. Eliot reminds us, “April is the cruelest month” after all. Which will it be?)

Our conversation may address the topics of our selected poems. We will probably share biographical information about the authors, or we might analyze various forms of poetry. Something like this might come up: The most popular form of poetry in the world is haiku (five syllables, then seven syllables, then five). Here is a classic by Masaoka Shiki, one of the great haiku masters: Consider me As one who loved poetry And persimmons.

I might mention that the longest poem in the world is the Indian epic “Mahabharata” written in the fourth century.

Conversely, my own one-line poem is short: I hate to see my favorite season come.

But there is one shorter still. The shortest poem ever is “The Shortest and Sweetest of Songs” by George MacDonald (1824-1905): Come Home.

Some may scoff at calling this a poem, but I think it’s brilliant and is no different than calling Edvard Munch’s 1893 painting “The Scream” art.

A poem with which I have recently become familiar, by Rainer Maria Rilke (1875-1926), is one that meets me where I am spiritually. “God” is the insufficient word we use to name our creator, a nongendered entity that exists around us and within us. This verse gives us simple instructions on how to conduct ourselves while we live for a blip of time on this planet, relying on the spirit of God to make the most of the time we have here: God speaks to each of us as he makes us, then walks with us silently out of the night.

These are the words we dimly hear: You, sent out beyond your recall, go to the limits of your longing.

Embody me.

Flare up like a flame and make big shadows I can move in.

Let everything happen to you: beauty and terror.

Just keep going. No feeling is final.

Don't let yourself lose me.

Nearby is the country they call life.

You will know it by its seriousness.

Give me your hand.

Each time I read this poem it reaches deeper into my being and inspires me to live life—every wonderful, horrible aspect of it, to it’s fullest. I am not very often successful at it. I get glum and grumpy and lonely and spiteful, just like the rest of humanity. But I try to be thankful for those times as well as the beautiful, wonderful, fulfilling days. Together they make up the country called life. We only get one shot at it.

Finally, I’m hoping someone will bring some Mary Oliver to read aloud at my poetry salon. Perhaps it will be one of her most well known poems, “The Summer Day.” For me, grasshoppers aren’t particularly romantic but the second half of the poem is so rich, it is worth studying a grasshopper for.

Who made the world?

Who made the swan, and the black bear?

Who made the grasshopper?

This grasshopper, I mean — the one who has flung herself out of the grass, the one who is eating sugar out of my hand, who is moving her jaws back and forth instead of up and down — who is gazing around with her enormous and complicated eyes.

Now she lifts her pale forearms and thoroughly washes her face.

Now she snaps her wings open, and floats away.

I don't know exactly what a prayer is.

I do know how to pay attention, how to fall down into the grass, how to kneel down in the grass, how to be idle and blessed, how to stroll through the fields, which is what I have been doing all day.

Tell me, what else should I have done?

Doesn't everything die at last, and too soon?

Tell me, what is it you plan to do with your one wild and precious life?

Estes Park EDC BEAR Program Success With Retailers In May of last year, the Estes Park EDC started working with a group of six retail business owners through its Business Expansion and Retention (BEAR) Program. The purpose of this pilot program was to determine if a small group of highly motivated business owners could work together to promote, advertise and market each other’s businesses while working in a spirit of cooperation instead of competition. What would that look like? Would it help move the needle on retail sales or would it be an exercise in futility?

“It was important to us not to set the goals for the group,” said Estes Park EDC Vice President Adam Shake.” We really wanted whoever joined this pilot program, to get out of it what they need, and not what we assumed they need.” With a thought to group dynamics and understanding of advertising, marketing and branding, Estes Park EDC created a set of criteria to measure businesses against for invitations to join the group. “The criteria that we set was that a business had to be retail focused, open twelve months a year, have a website, and be utilizing social media for business on a regular basis.

Once the group started to meet, with Estes Park EDC facilitating and leading the meetings, it was determined that the group wanted to use the power of their online communications to support and speak about each other’s businesses. Estes EDC created a Google Drive account and had folders where each of the business owners could upload logos, photos, videos and text that they could all share while using a sharing calendar. “It was great,” said Shake.

“The likes, reach, page views and engagement increased significantly on their Facebook Pages when they started to post each other’s information.”

Taking it a step further, the group decided to try to commission the production of a professional video entitled “A Perfect Day in Estes Park,” featuring travel writer

and vlogger Jennifer Broome as she starts her day in Estes Park by getting coffee, then going for a hike, doing some “retail therapy” and finishing her day at a local brewery. “We were very fortunate in that Visit Estes Park made it possible for us to do the video by offering the businesses a grant,” said Shake. The video speaks Estes Park being a great place to visit.

About a year after launching the pilot program, Shake interviewed each of the six participant business owners and asked them for their impressions of the program to date, what Estes Park EDC can do differently as facilitators, what value the program has brought them and what next steps they would like to see. Shake said that the overwhelming take-away he got from the participants was that they are all very impressed with the program and it’s identified goals. “I don’t want to say that there was any mistrust at the beginning,” said Shake, “But there might have been a little bit of worry of giving away insider secrets or other people’s motivations for joining the group. But the group really came together and for some of them, it became a safe place to ask questions that they might have been embarrassed to ask before. Every single one of the business owners expressed their appreciation to the connection to a group goal oriented, connected collaborators and said one of the biggest things they got out of the program was a deeper understanding of each other and business in Estes Park.

The group plans to continue meeting with Estes Park EDC and launch a combined ad campaign in the Fall and the BEAR program is considering putting together another group of business owners from a different industry cluster. “Collaboration can benefit the wider business community,” said Shake.

2019 International Weight Pull Association Championships In Estes Park "Pulling for a Cure: One Pound at a Time" will be held this Saturday and Sunday, April 27-28, starting at 9 a.m. each day at the Estes Park Events Complex. It is free to attend and there will be bleacher seating and a silent auction.

The International Weight Pull Association (IWPA) is a non-profit association that promotes the sport of dog pulling through well organized, sanctioned events.

The purpose of IWPA is to promote the working heritage of all dogs. The IWPA also promotes a program to keep your dog in good physical condition with a constructive outlet for canine competition.

Dog Pulling is akin to a tractor pull. Dogs compete to see who can pull the most weight 16 feet. They pull a wheeled cart on an earthen surface, or a sled on snow.

The handler has no contact with the dog during the pull, so it is up to the dogs willingness to pull. Safety of the dog is of paramount concern. Since IWPA's organization in 1984, no dogs have been hurt in competition.

IWPA was organized in November 1984 when a group of dog pulling enthu-

siasts saw a need for an organization to promote this specialized sport. Our season for sanctioned pulls runs from September through March. We currently sanction around one hundred pulls a season throughout the contiguous United States and Canada. Membership currently runs around 250 to 300 with around 400 to 600 dogs in competition. We are open to all dogs, mixed breed or purebred.

The objective of a competition is to see which dogs (within their weight class) can pull the most weight 16 feet within one minute. A tie is broken by the dog that pulled in the least amount of time on the preceding weight. Dogs compete within their own weight class, of which there are nine: 0-10#, 1120#, 21-40#, 41-60#, 61-80#, 81100#, 101-125# , 126-150#, 151# and over.

Family Fun On Derby Day 2019 This year the 145th Kentucky Derby is on May 4, and with contenders such as Omaha Beach, Maximum Security, Code of Honor, and War of Wills— this Derby fits right in with the American Legion! So, following the festivities of the Estes Park Duck Race, American Legion Post 119 invites you to a Derby Day party for revelers of all ages.

Post 119 has recently acquired a new audio-visual system that allows streaming of network race-day coverage onto a giant-screen with great resolution. You can watch all the action, from the time that NBC coverage begins at 2:30 p.m. with the pre-race merriments, to the 4:50 post time, to the postrace champagne toasts.

A bucket raffle is planned that might allowing you to be a Derby winner too!

Raffle tickets will be sold for $1 each (6 for $5). Ticket buyers will drop their raffle tickets into the buckets for their favorite horses. At the end of the race, a winning raffle ticket will be drawn from each of the buckets of the “Win” “Place” and “Show” derby horses. You must be present to win!

A big part of the Derby fun is Derby wear, especially the hats! So dress in your Derby partying finest for the event, and you have another chance to be a big winner! “Cinco de Mayo” To Be Celebrated Locally On Monday, May 6 Estes Park’s Annual Cinco de Mayo Celebration will take place this year on Monday, May 6 beginning at 5:30 p.m.

The event is free and open to the public.

This year’s event is being held one day after the traditional “Cinco” and takes place at the Estes Park Events Center located at the Stanley Park Fairgrounds.

Food will be served from 5:30 to 7:00 p.m., followed by a live performance later that evening by Mariachi Luna, offering the rich tradition of mariachi music. This year’s event includes door prizes, a photo booth, and additional music by DJ La Tocada.

“Cinco de Mayo” recalls a day in 1862 when French forces attempted to seize the small town of Puebla, Mexico. The Mexican troops, comprised of local farmers and villagers, prevailed against a much stronger invading army, and their unlikely victory inspires pride still to this day. Much like St. Patrick’s Day, “Cinco” has grown into annual tradition enjoyed by many cultures worldwide.

Major sponsors for this year’s event are Mountain Home Cafe, the Village Thrift Shop, the Estes Park Education Founda-

tion, and Estes Valley Recreation and Park District. Additional partners who will be on hand at the event include the school Mental Health Awareness program in conjunction with SummitStone Health Partners, Estes Park Paramedics, the Estes Park Police Department, and rangers from Rocky Mountain National Park.

In addition, the “Cinco” committee is working with the League of Women Voters’ Recycling Committee to help make this year’s celebration an ecofriendly event. Serving materials will be compost-friendly, and refuse will be taken to a regional composting site after the event. All families will receive a re-usable shopping bag to take home, while supplies last.

The public is encouraged to attend on May 6. In addition to food and music, “Cinco” provides an opportunity for all ages to come together in activities, conversation, and civic pride.

Offering Public Assistance To The Estes Valley For The Last 37 years For the last 37 years Crossroads Ministry has been actively involved in caring for people during and after disasters, emergencies, and seasons of great need.

There’s no need for our local government to fund a public assistance office because Crossroads has stepped up to fill this role.

When compared to a typical public assistance office funded by tax payers and operated by a government agency, Crossroads offers similar resources, but the big difference is how they mobilize volunteers to love their neighbors through acts of compassion.

Brian Schaffer, Executive Director for Crossroads, says, “Our hope is to be the kind of people who are loving, patient, gentle, joyful, peaceful, and self-controlled as we assist our neighbors in whatever is going on in their life. For some it could be a temporary fix while for others it may be on-going support, but no matter what it is we’re committed to be there for people in our community.

We believe no one should go hungry in our town, so we maintain a fully-stocked food pantry to be able to offer food as a

first response in meeting needs. However, what we have discovered is that people are hungry for more than just food to feed the body, but desire to live within a loving community where they can have healthy and meaningful relationships. I think we’re doing a great job of building relationships of trust that allow our volunteers to interact with our clients in a way that no other agency can come close to providing. We believe unconditional love is transformative and can change lives from the inside out.

For us to continue doing what we do best we need people to help us fund the services that cost money. Time and talents can take us quite a ways in meeting needs, but it’s the treasures that are needed to pay rent, purchase food, and sustain a building where a majority of our work takes place. Some of you can give a lot for those who need a lot while others can give a little for those who need a little.

The bags for this project were purchased with a grant awarded to the League of Women Voters by the Village Thrift Store. In the recent winter issue of Defenders, a magazine published by Defenders of Wildlife, an article reported that there are currently 250,000 tons of plastic in our oceans. Virtually everything that swims, or wildlife that eats things that swim, now contain small pieces of plastic called microfibers or microbeads. This pollution not only threatens wildlife, it threatens us as well.

Congratulations to Anna Greenway, the Student of the Week for April 26, 2019.

At school Anna is a member of the EPHS four time Colorado State Champion Marching Band. She earned a 1210 on the SAT and maintains a 4.0 GPA. Outside of school she likes to read, sculpt, draw, hang out with her friends and play with her dogs.

Anna ’s favorite quote is, “I knew exactly what to do. But in a much more real sense, I had no idea what to do” from Michael Scott in The Office.

She likes this quote because she says it pretty much sums up her high school experience.

After high school Anna plans to go to Colorado State University to get her degree in art or psychology (or both).

A well-known, avowed Atheist was speaking to a large crowd. He ridiculed all who believed in and honored God, telling them how useless such beliefs were, trying to convince others to follow his philosophy. After he had concluded his comments, he asked if anyone in the audience had any questions. A man got up from his seat and began walking toward the podium. As he walked, he began to peel a ‘Cutie’ orange and eat one segment after another. As he neared the podium the speaker asked, obviously irritated, “Well, do you have a question?�

The man paused in eating his ‘Cutie’ and said, “Sir, is this ‘Cutie’ sweet or sour?� The speaker said, sarcastically, “How would I know? I haven’t tasted it!� The inquirer asked, “And when did you taste Christianity?� The speaker retorted: “Haven’t you been listening? I never have and I never will.� “Then, Sir, you don’t know whether it works or not, since you’ve never tried it! You have no credibility when you attack something you’ve never tried!�

I suspect that, like many other residents of our beloved Estes Park, when I hear someone criticize men and women who are in places of leadership in community politics, I have a question. Like the questioner above, I want to know: “When did you ‘taste’ it?â€? When did you taste what it was like to be in public office, faced with decisions that affect thousands‌in Estes Park’s case, millions‌4.8 of them‌subjected to criticism and constant scrutiny. We would like to know what makes you think you have credibility when you criticize people who are making decisions that impact the way that our community is run. Few communities would be able to handle so efficiently the 4.8 million people that come our way each year. Therefore, those valuable boards that make decisions that cater to this large influx of people, as well as our own residents, and do it effectively, should be honored for the job they do. Instead, we have people who have never ‘peeled’ a ‘Cutie’ trying to tell those who have how to do it. Perhaps, it would help the credibility of Board critics if they would tell us how many boards they have served on‌how many positions of leadership in community affairs they have held‌and give us the evidence of their capable leadership.

I know a man who was harshly criticized for the way he reached out to help the homeless and other people needing help. After absorbing his critic’s ranting and raving for awhile, my friend asked calmly: “Okay, you know how I do my people-helping and benevolence. How do you do yours?â€? The critic looked shocked. He finally stuttered, “Well‌I guess I don’t.â€? My friend said, “Well, then, I like the way I do it better than the way you don’t do it!â€?

Perhaps it’s time for all the critics of the Estes Park Town Board and the decisions they make, to tell us about all the ‘good things’ they are doing for the betterment of Estes Park and the multitudes of people it serves. !� Perhaps a column in the local paper about all these people do to benefit each of us who live here, and those families of excited people who visit us each year to have their lives blessed.

Could it be that most of us would be forced to respond, “Well, we like the way our Board is doing it better than the way you’re not doing it�?

CIA Program-10 Year Update A couple weeks back I graduated, with 22 other Estes Valley residents, from this year's CIA course. CIA stands for Citizens Information Academy - a journey for six weeks into the inner-workings of our local government. Ten years ago I took the same course to get an education; this time I went to critique the present administration efforts. Ten years ago I was a 10-year resident who knew all the political players by first names and wrote a weekly opinion column for this newspaper. I knew all the department heads under the old town administration and was a close observer of town activities. This time I knew town manager Frank Lancaster, Police Chief Wes Kufeld, Trustee Ron Norris and Town Clerk Jackie Williamson. I knew these same four from my last course and have had exposure to and discussions with the now Public Works Director Greg Muhonen and Utilities Director Reuben Bergsten. My exposure to the other department heads, our new Municipal Court Judge David Thrower, Community Services Director Rob Hinkle, Community Development Director Randy Hunt, Mayor Todd Jirsa, Finance Director Duane Hudson, and the town's forever-attorney Greg White, has been merely a passing-in-the-hall and a nod of the head.

In 2007, I must admit that I was impressed by the then-administration of our town. I considered most of them to be good people with the town's welfare at heart. There were two department heads that I thought were questionable in terms of their behavior, management styles, how they presented themselves, their views and how they incited rumors of personal agendas. Fortunately, they are long gone.

Years ago I was a sales trainer for the Tribune Newspaper Company, and I used to start my training sessions with my personal philosophy that "life is attitude, commitment and communication,"

and through my life I have critiqued others using my formula. I love my home in this marvelous mountain valley, where I sought refuge from the crazy world. I have and do feel this is the greatest place for me on earth, hence I want it to remain a great place.

My unbiased report of the present town department heads and employees is - great. Every manager and their employees were well-spoken, knowledgeable and excited about their department and its operation. Every department was well-organized and had a project they were working on for the benefit of the town. There does not seem to be a weak spot in the town's operational workforce. All are singing from the same hymnal and loving what they are doing.

The past 10 years have been on Town Manager Frank Lancaster's watch.

When he was interviewed and hired I thought he definitely was the right person for the job and he, in my estimation, has done a great job of hiring the right person for each department and counseling them to his philosophy and work ethic. Frank's 18 years of managing Larimer County prior to coming here has really benefitted our community.

For my money, Frank gets an "atta-boy" for a job well done!

Now, I know my praise for this town's government will not be shared by all, but I'm entitled to my educated opinion.

Whenever one takes a position on some matter, you know that half the population will question the judgement rendered.

The next CIA is in 2021, and I hope anyone with opposing views would take the course and then take a stand for their viewpoint. Here's hoping Frank's replacement will be a person of values and have a moral compass to continue the Estes Park magic.

Love this town; we are in good hands!

Estes Valley Conservatives Continue To Unite Estes Valley Conservatives next meeting is Saturday, April 27, 2:00 p.m. at the old Mountain Top Physical Therapy building (1751 North Lake Avenue). The group started just a few months ago and have continued to join together and expand with every meeting.

At the April 27 meeting, several topics will be covered: Joe Holtman will speak on the Estes Storm Water fee, legislative updates, coordination with other conservative groups, the petition to overturn the National Popular Vote law, and the status of the recall of Mayor Todd Jirsa

and Trustee Cody Walker.

The group continues to grow with input from its conservative base through an open mic section of the meeting. In the future, the group will invite speakers on various topics based on current events and input from members.

Ballet Renaissance Dances Hope

Local nonprofit Ballet Renaissance will open this year’s annual Center Stage recital with an original ballet based on Trina Paulus’ story “Hope for the Flowers.”

With its message of hope and transformation, this year’s ballet will honor Ballet Renaissance founder Ms. Brianna Furnish’s mother, who earned her wings Dec. 9, 2018.

“My mother was my first teacher,” said Furnish of her mom, Ms. Jody Carmichael Furnish, a classically trained ballet and modern dancer, who also taught and performed liturgical dance, and was a modern dance professor at Southern Methodist University in Dallas for 17 years. (shown above with Brianna) “Hope for the Flowers,” will feature 32 Ballet Renaissance students from Estes Park (ranging in age from 3 through adult), as well as a group of Ballet Renaissance teen students, who study with Ballet Renaissance in Loveland at Boys & Girls Clubs of Larimer County.

Teen student, Trip Babcock of Denver will also perform. Trip studies ballet with BR Co-Director Mr. Radoslaw Kokoszka at Sweatshop Dance in Denver, and will dance with Estes Park’s

Maggie Lewis. Babcock and Lewis will perform the roles of Paulus’ two lead characters, Stripe and Yellow, caterpillars in search of more.

The annual Center Stage recital will take place at the YMCA of the Rockies Ruesch Auditorium on Friday May 10 at 6:30 pm and Saturday May 11 at 2 pm. Hope for the Flowers will open both shows. Tickets are available at the door: $5 for students, $10 general admission.

Ballet Renaissance is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization committed to educating and inspiring youth and the community through the art of classical ballet. Founded in southeast Michigan in June of 1997, Ballet Renaissance established a second branch in Estes Park in the fall of 2011. Here in northern Colorado, Ballet Renaissance partners with Center Stage School of Dance, the Presbyterian Community Church of the Rockies, Boys & Girls Clubs of Larimer County, and the Oratorio Society of Estes Park.

On Tuesday, April 23, Mayor Pro Tem Cody Walker proclaimed June 8, 2019 “Estes Recycles Day” and introduced this year’s poster, designed by Bethany McCusher. For her efforts, she received a crisp new $100 bill from Bestway Painting. The other contest winners were not able to attend. The 2nd Place award, movie tickets from Reel Mountain Theater, went to Daniel Escorcia and 3rd Place, $50 in gift certificates from the Park Theatre, was won by Rebecca Leon Erives. Honorable mentions, Annabell McWhinney, Hyunji Cho, and Kysa Marske each receive a box of taffy from The Taffy Shop. Judging was done by the local Sign Association who are very pleased with the fine young graphic artists that entered this year’s competition.

On Estes Recycles Day, now an annual event, from 9 a.m. to 12 noon, businesses and individuals can bring hard to recycle items to the Presbyterian Community Church of the Rockies (1700 Brodie Ave.) for Earth conscious disposal. The items being recycled this year will include electronics (fees required), paint and paint products (free), and metal objects (free). There will also be a Shred-a-Thon station (required donation) offering shredding services. Back by popular demand is Freecycle Estes, a garage sale with no money. Simply bring things no longer wanted and/or take home treasures found. One new service this year will be external home pickup of old mattresses. Estes Valley Recreation & Park District And Rotary Club Of Estes Park Host Spring Cleanup This Saturday Estes Valley Recreation and Park District (EVRPD), the provider of numerous recreational opportunities in Estes Valley, along with their partners Rotary Club of Estes Park, the Town of Estes Park, Rocky Mountain Dumpsters, and Starbucks, invite everyone to this year’s annual Estes Park Spring Cleanup.

This Saturday, April 27, 2019, from 9 to 11 a.m., join your community members and volunteers as they work to tidy up around Estes Park.

“The intent of this program is to clean our waterways and roadways in Estes Valley,” said Annie Hanson, Manager of the Lake Estes Marina and co-coordinator of the event, along with Tara Moenning of Rotary Club of Estes Park. “We will welcome spring by tidying up our

neighborhoods and downtown to create a safer environment and beautify our community for the residents and visitors to Estes Valley.”

Estes Park takes a beating from the winter winds, resulting in trash–inadvertently or not–littered throughout the town. And the heavy snowfall this past winter means the trash that did get stuck in bushes and around buildings piled up a little more than usual.

Now that the winds have tampered down a bit, it is time to pick up your cleanup supplies and lend a helping hand for the community.

“The Estes Park Woman’s Club worked for beautification of the town for many years,” said Moenning. “At some point they were joined by the Rotary Club of

Estes Park in a ‘Clean-up Day.’ The Rotary Club eventually took over this event and would clean up the roadways in preparation for the Duck Race, held on the first Saturday in May, while EVRPD would clean up the river ways and lakes in mid-May. Several years ago, at Ron Kuhn’s suggestion, Rotary and the Rec District teamed up to accomplish both events together on the same day.’’

Groups and volunteers are asked to meet at 9 a.m. at the Estes Park Visitor Center located at 500 Big Thompson Avenue (across from McDonald’s) for instructions, directions and distribution of cleanup bags. Starbucks will provide coffee at the beginning of the event and donut holes will be available to snack on throughout the morning.

We recommend that you wear longsleeved shirts, long pants, sun protection and adequate footwear, and bring hand sanitizer, gloves and water. Rain gear may also be necessary as this event happens rain or shine.

More Help Needed! Duck Race Needs Volunteers To Help On Race Day The Estes Park Duck Race is still in need of volunteers to carry a big stick, push little ducks around, and keep people out of Fall River.

“We need about 30 to 40 people to help corral the ducks as they float down Fall River, as well as making sure people don’t fall into the river,” said Gene Oja, the official “sheriff ” of the duck race. He continued, “I don’t have many confirmations from volunteers who helped at last year’s race and we really need some help. We’d love to see some of our old friends as well as some new faces, ready to have fun while giving back to our community!” Oja said volunteers should contact him at info@eeojadds.com as soon as possible.

On race day, Saturday, May 4th, volunteers should check in at the Big Horn Restaurant at 401 W. Learn with the Rocky Mountain Conservancy Field Institute the first weekend of May at the There’s More to This Place than Meets the Eye: 100 Years of Environmental Change in Rocky Mountain National Park class, May 3, or at the Fire in Ecosystems: Friend or Foe? class, May 4.

These full-day courses are for those who want to learn more about the effects of climate change on Rocky Mountain National Park and the challenges that arise when change occurs in the ecosystems of public lands. Both classes will include indoor and outdoor sessions, allowing participants to view the landscapes being discussed.

“100 Years of Environmental Change in RMNP” provides an overview of the history of environmental change in the national park, emphasizing human-caused change. In this course participants will

discuss the history of mining, water engineering, recreational development and tourism, atmospheric inputs of dust and nitrates, wildlife management, and climate change in the context of protecting and restoring natural environments within the national park.

“Fire in Ecosystems” explores the aftermath of one of the worst fire seasons in the known history of the western states.

They will also discuss the history of fire policy ranging from the 10-AM policy to the Let-Burn policy, with the caveat of the wildland-urban interface. Through these discussions, the goal is to better understand the complexity of how climate change may alter fire disturbance regimes.

On April 19 the sports medicine class was invited to Healing Waters to learn about the warm water therapy pool. Bethany Mathias, who is a physical therapy assistant and athletic trainer, spent part of her morning teaching students about the pool and how she has been able to help people recover from many different things such as knee surgery, ankle sprains, and rotator cuff tears. She also showed our class how the

pool can be used for training and people can get a great workout by using the resistance of the water. Our students got to try running on the treadmill, swimming against the jets, and they used tools designed to use water resistance to strengthen the upper body. The biggest takeaway for our students was this pool is not only for individuals recovering from injury, but it can be used by anyone who would like to get a great workout.

Young Children Celebrated At The Family Fun Fair Families, children and community volunteers came together to celebrate the Month of the Young Child at the BE READY Family Fun Fair on April 13.

The free event held at Estes Park Elementary School, was sponsored by EVICS, Estes Park Schools, United Way of Larimer County, and the Early Childhood Council of Larimer County. Over 155 parents and children attended, and enjoyed interacting with the 22 community resource participants, on hand to share information and lively activities for children. Be Ready is a Larimer County initiative that supports and promotes school readiness, beginning at birth.

Ninety-percent of brain development occurs in the first five years of life, which means it is never too early to start helping children prepare for school success.

At the BE READY Fair, every child received a Be Ready Backpack, free books, and many other goodies. Families talked with community representatives about early learning services, recreation, health and medical services, nutrition, early intervention, pre-literacy, and Kindergarten readiness. Have you ever heard, “Sleep when the baby sleeps!” Or, “You really need to make room for your relationship while raising kids.” Those ideas can seem so unrealistic and unreachable while you are in the trenches of raising young children. watch funny online videos with your partner, than please do that. Taking a shower, walking the dog, talking with a friend, just putting ear buds in, all can be considered selfcare!

Listening to yourself and having an ongoing inner dialogue is the key to achieving selfcare.

The fact is, the more you can make time for little moments to take care of yourself, the more your children are going to benefit from having healthy parents. It seems so backwards, but your well being comes first. Without a healthy you there is no way there is a healthy child. We know you love your children, it’s time to start loving yourself.

Free Movie at Reel Mountain Theater: Exploring Issues in “The Hate U Give” The community is invited to a screening of the 2018 film “The Hate U Give” next Thursday, May 2 at 7 p.m. at Reel Mountain Theater. The special event is hosted by the Estes Valley Library and the Estes Valley Restorative Justice Partnership. Admission is free by showing your library card or local student I. D. This film wrestles with the complex societal issues that emerge after an unarmed black man is shot by a white police officer.

The movie’s main character, Starr Carter, is the only witness. She suddenly finds herself facing pressure from all sides of the community, including the poor, mostly black neighborhood where she lives and the wealthy, mostly white prep school that she attends.

The library is continuing its series of Current Affairs programs that offer opportunities for discussion of today’s issues and the seeking of meaningful solutions through listening and positive dialogue.

While the 133-minute movie screening will not allow time for a formal discussion, the library has arranged book discussions of “The Hate U Give,” both at the library and at Estes Park High School.

To provide the best framework for the series, the library has partnered with Estes Valley Restorative Justice. That team includes Denise Lord, Executive Director of Restorative Justice, and Detective Caleb Robertson from the Estes Park Police Department. The high school discussion on May 1 is being facilitated by Restorative Practices Coordinator Mary Barron, who

is joined by School Resource Officer Curt Plassmeyer.

The 2018 film is based on Angie Thomas’s novel of the same name, which debuted at the top of the “New York Times” Young Adult Bestseller List in 2017 and remained there for fifty weeks.

The film has earned praise from most reviewers, earning a 97% positive score by the review-aggregation website Rotten Tomatoes. Anna Wilkinson of Vox.com called the movie an “incisive big-screen drama anchored by outstanding performances.” Reviews that were more critical of the film included the website Plugged In, noting the movie’s strong language and violence, and writing: “... even as it attempts to be fair-minded, the film still comes off feeling one-sided in its treatment of controversial issues. Viewers who agree with its perspective may cheer its messages.

Those who don’t may very well be offended by them.”

“The Hate U Give” is rated PG-13 for mature thematic elements, some violent content, drug material and language.

“Estes Celebrates Cinema” Concert Sparkles With Glitz & Glam Do you want to hear the people sing?

Be our guest! Put our singing to the test.

We have a million dreams to share with you when the Estes Park Chorale presents its spring concert, “Estes Celebrates Cinema.” Your heart will go on, and all that jazz. The sky won’t fall, but the ducks will be done, and you are invited to the Presbyterian Church of the Rockies for fun, frolic and great movie songs.

The date is Saturday, May 4th, the time is 7:00 p.m. The Estes Park Chorale, under the direction of Denise Stookesberry, is supported by Michelle Gergen-Wisner on piano. Without them, the 30+ mixed-voice group of singers could never take the stage for such an ambitious production.

Glitz and glamor, sparkle and shine, bling and boas - - this concert has it all.

Come see how the members of the Chorale show off their favorite attire to showcase the dazzling array of songs from the movies. It’s our chance to wear everything imaginable to catch your eye. Believe me, it won’t be what you’re used to seeing people wear in the high country of Estes Park!

The publicity poster calls this show a “scintillating splash of cinematic selections to sparkle your spring. ” We hope that’s a good enough incentive to entice a full-house crowd for this one-time performance. Yes, all the songs in the show are from the movies, carefully selected

by musical director, Denise Stookesberry.

The history of movies goes back to the early 20th century in the United States, and Hollywood and other movie studio settings produce several hundred films each year. Music in movies directs and escorts the theme and reinforces the tenor and tone of the emotions of the film and can encompass a wide variety of styles from jazz to pop, blues and new age. Musicals have brought us awardwinning, heart-rending and memorable songs which are quickly transferred to

the mainstream of our culture.

In the Chorale’s spring concert, the movies featured go all the way back to 1941 with “Buck Privates” and the early 1950s with “Annie Get Your Gun” and progress up until the debut year of 2017 with “The Greatest Showman.”

The “Golden Age of Hollywood,” the years from 1917 through the 1960s brought films from the silent mode up to and including a great variety of formula-driven feature films. “New Holly-

wood” and the post-classical cinema era brought larger budgets, a larger variety of plots with Steven Spielberg as one of the most popular and successful pioneers of this new type of motion picture.

To spotlight the potential success of movies each year, award ceremonies such as the Academy Awards and the Golden Globes became important by recognizing the hard work and achievements of all aspects of film-making. So, the Estes Park Chorale has chosen to frame this concert’s musical numbers with a variety of special awards and recognitions.

The Estes Park’s Chorale’s history goes back to 1970, when the first director, Jo Waddell, established the Madrigal Singers. The original group of 16 members quickly outgrew that designation and the Estes Park Chorale was born. A mixed men’s and women’s chorus meets weekly for rehearsals and over time the selections have ranged widely from holiday music to classical productions. Instrumentalists are enlisted to supplement piano or organ pieces.

So let’s see what’s on the lineup for this

concert. Your hosts, Robert Burkhardt and Penny Roberts, have scripted the framework of the show with quips and notes and funny stuff to keep you engaged, we hope. Walt Disney movies are certainly a source for many memorable songs. The Chorale has included “Be Our Guest” from “Beauty and the Beast” and “Feed The Birds” from Mary Poppins in our celebration.

From upbeat numbers like “All That Jazz” from “Chicago” to quieter, reflective pieces like “Skyfall” from the James Bond movie of the same name, this concert will not lack for variety.

Special solos and duets are also featured. Ruth Mutschler will sing “If I Loved You” from “Carousel,” and a solo

by Maureen Gootz will bring even more dazzle, twinkle and glitz with “Diamonds Are A Girl’s Best Friend” from “Gentlemen Prefer Blondes.” There is a vivacious sextet of ladies who will belt out “Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy of Company B” from the movie “Buck Privates. ” I know we’ll enjoy that Boogie rhythm with all the “toot a toot a toot diddle ah da toot” that will be going on.

Erica Metzler has a featured solo in “A Million Dreams” from “The Greatest Showman” and then Erica will be joined

by Aracely Thomas in a moving duet, “Remember Me” from the more recent movie “Coco.”

The concert would not be complete

without Brad and Kelley Anderson in a swinging duet, “Doin’ What Comes Naturally” from back in the 1950s when “Annie Get Your Gun” hit the movie screens. They’ll be wearing something suitably fitting in the Western mode, I’m sure.

To round out the program, the remainder of the numbers are “Moon River” from “Breakfast at Tiffany’s,” My Heart Will Go On” from “Titanic” and “Do You Hear the People Sing” from “Les Miserables.”

The concert doesn’t lack for additional support and encouragement from talented instrumentalists. Bob Rising will be tapping, rapping and thundering on the drums throughout most of the numbers, including the tympani on the last piece. Ian Norris will accompany the ladies singing “Boogie Woogie” on the trumpet in good period fashion.

Melinda Workman will join the ladies on the flute when they sing “My Heart Will Go On” and also will play the 2nd piano part for the last number as well. Michelle will switch to the organ for that last number, helping fill the venue with overthe-top sound.

So what’s the last number? “O Fortuna,” a truly challenging rousing setting for choir and instruments, it’s the first movement of Carl Orff ’s medieval German Latin section of “Carmina Burana.”

That’s Latin for “Songs for Beuern” referring to the Benediktbeuern Abbey in Bavaria, Germany. Why is this number in this concert featuring songs from the movies? I found references to hundreds of movies that featured this song as well as numerous television commercials and other theatrical applications. We hope we can pull it off admirably and I’m sure Denise would not be disappointed if you sang along with the Chorale and the instruments.

This month is dedicated to honoring the volunteers in our communities as well as encouraging volunteerism. The Estes Park Museum Gallery was only open seven months in 2018, with 40 volunteers that donated 1,456 hours towards the Museum - that is equivalent to $35,148! It is evident that the Museum could not function without these invaluable individuals and why staff would like to take the opportunity to recognize them for helping the Museum achieve its mission on a daily basis. RiverPlace Closing Their Doors Almost a decade ago, RivePlace, A community Livingroom in Downtown, opened its doors to welcome visitors and guests from all corners of the town and world. We have been blessed by so many who have come for a cup of coffee, a game of Scrabble, found just a place to sit and relax.

We will be closing our door on April 30 after nearly 10 years of being available to folks in downtown. The number of people who have found a safe haven at RiverPlace over the years is in the thousands, and the hours served by the volunteers who have been there to welcome guests cannot be measured. We can’t even imagine how many fresh baked cookies have been consumed

and how many pots of coffee have been brewed! We have been blessed by so many encounters…been privileged to help folks in so many ways, helped them get back home, get medical care, found emergency housing, paid utility bills, provided for many a meal for the hungry, welcomed all with open hearts and open minds. To those who we call “family,” thank you for the privilege of being part of your lives!

Library Closed On Monday, May 6 For Building Maintenance On Monday, May 6, the Estes Valley Library will be closed all day to allow for the replacement of several HVAC units on the library roof. A construction crane and other heavy equipment will be occupying a footprint of the building’s perimeter and a portion of the parking lot that day. This will make the facility inaccessible to the public. The building will also be closed out of safety precautions, and due to construction noise and the inability to regulate indoor temperatures that day. The library is scheduled to reopen on Tuesday, May 7 at 10 a.m.

The library’s website, including digital collections and research databases, will

remain accessible during the closure day. The Twig, a mini-branch located at the Estes Valley Community Center with a drive-up book return, will be also be open. In addition, Cliffhanger Used Books, a store operated by the Library Friends & Foundation, will be open regular hours that day from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Update On Status Of Recall To The Editor: The Recall Committee ended its signature gathering on Tuesday, April 16. Approximately 565 signed Mayor Jirsa's petition and approximately 585 signed Mayor Pro Tem Trustee Walker's petition. The path for verification and having a recall election is winding its way through the legal process at this time.

The committee would like to thank all town residents for their continued support and for signing the petitions. We would also like to thank all of the county residents as well for their strong support in this endeavor. We feel that your voices are finally being heard!

The recall effort has been characterized in a lot of the media as being personal, sour grapes, and a dissatisfaction of the Mountain Coaster approval. This couldn't be further from the truth! The recall effort has always been about an ethics violation against Mayor Pro Tem Trustee Walker for failing to recuse himself on a code change vote in the spring of 2017.

This code change financially benefits his personal property and also opens up any five acre lot, or larger, susceptible for

commercial development in the entire Estes Valley! In an interview by the Trail Gazette done on 3/4/16 then Trustee candidate Walker said, "There is no reason a trustee should ever recuse himself from the discussion, just the final vote, as long as that relationship is disclosed.”

He failed to keep his word on this issue.

Mayor Jirsa failed to recognize, or act on, the adverse impact the code change has upon residential property. Being the political leader of our town he should put the residents wants and needs first, not the tourists and developers as many feel he has. As the two highest elected officials in Estes Park, Mayor Jirsa and Mayor Pro Tem Trustee Walker bear the responsibility for the significant decline of the faith and trust in town governance as shown on the citizens' survey released in the fall of 2018.
